Gemma Louise Heaton, a teacher at The Lord of Grace Christian School, asked students under her History and Social Studies classes to answer our question: “What’s the best that you have done for our country?” Here are their responses.
‘Be proud of being a Filipino’
What is the best the thing I have done for my country? I actually don’t know because at my age, it is impossible to do something big. Then I realized it isn’t important on how big it is. I think the best thing I’ve done for my country is to be proud that I am a Filipino.
Being proud that I am a Filipino is not quite easy. Sometimes, I even doubt it because of our government. The people have to rally on the streets to get what they want. I feel like it is telling me that we have to go to war first before we can gain peace. When I was in Grade 7, we studied Philippine history. I then appreciated peace. It was not just about the Filipinos fighting the Spanish but how we fought for our independence.
Now, if someone will ask me what is the best thing that I have done for our country, I will tell him or her that I am proud to be a Filipino.

‘Give respect’
There are many heroes and heroines who have done big things for the Philippines: Andres Bonifacio, who sacrificed and gave everything for the sake of the Philippines; Melchora Aquino, who risked her life to help the Katipuneros; Dr. Jose Rizal, who is our national hero, and others who sacrificed their lives.
But what is the best thing a 13-year-old girl has done and can do for her country? I am not a mother who is a hero for neither her child nor a father who is a hero for his son. I am just a sophomore student, a girl who knows nothing but to eat, sleep, surf the Internet, watch television and fan-girl over Daniel Padilla. The things I have done for my country so far are to make my parents proud and to give respect. I study to make my parents, as well as my teachers, proud. It is not easy to make a person proud and, at the same time, happy.
I gave relief items to the victims of Supertyphoon “Yolanda” before. Yes, it is a big thing, but for me, giving respect is bigger. It is the biggest thing a 13-year-old girl can do and give. Giving respect, for me, is the sister of loving and loving is the root of caring.
Giving respect is the best thing I have done for my country and for the people around me.

‘Study our history, teach it to others’

‘Do good in school’
When people ask that question, the answer really depends on who you are asking. When you ask an adult, he/she would probably answer something like: “I have donated to charity” or “I have beggars on the street.” But as a sophomore student, and not a financially fortunate one at that, there is only so much I can do.
A lot of people say it doesn’t matter how old you are and stuff like that, “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” But in my perspective, I am just a little girl who is lost in a big world. What is there for a 14-year-old to do that will improve our country? After all the ups and downs in my 14 years of existence, I guess the best I can do is to do good in school, succeed as a student and be an obedient daughter to my family.
If I am an honor student, I can graduate with honors, and graduating with a scholarship is my goal. If I can make to the Dean’s List, I will succeed in the career I want to pursue. If I am going to be a film director in the future, as an adult I can change or improve the country by directing inspirational or motivational films.

Being a citizen is a little difficult for the reason that you have to follow the rules implemented by your country. We know that people hate to follow them; if you don’t you, could be sent to jail or you will have to pay the price. You have to submit to the authorities. You have to be responsible and you need to contribute in the simplest way that you can do for your country. Actually, as a citizen, you need to be aware and remember a few things or rules.
As a student, I believe the things that I can do for my country are limitless, as long as I believe in myself. Honestly, when I’m at home, I dislike following the house rules; sometimes, even when I am in school. When I’m outside, I throw garbage anywhere. But when I entered high school, I realized I have to stop these practices because it is childish. I need to grow up in order to contribute to my country. So, I started following the rules, regardless of where I am.
Therefore, I conclude that our society has a lot of problems right now and I’m aware there will be a lot more as time goes by. So stop being a burden in our society: Follow rules and submit to our authorities. Our society has a lot to face they may not be able to help you right now. Grow up!

Writing Examples
At this level, I am able to create individual words that have no extended meaning.
I can share some simple vocabulary, which deals with the prompt/task/situation, but I tend to struggle to connect those words to create meaning.

At this level, I am beginning to develop the ability to create meaning by grammatically connecting words.
Specifically, I can connect some basic subjects and verbs or verbs and objects, but I may be inconsistent at doing this.
I am often limited in my vocabulary to Novice level topics that I experience in my every-day life or that I have recently learned.

At this level, I can create simple sentences with very basic grammatical control and accuracy.
There are often errors in my responses, while at the same time I might have good control with some very simple structures and functions of the language that I have just learned or studied.
At the Novice levels, errors are expected as I try to create simple sentences. Generally, the sentences that I am able to create are very basic and simple with few, if any, added details.
Ayaw niya mag-aral. Gusto niya maglaro.
At this level, I can create simple sentences with some added detail; such sentences help create VARIETY.
At the Intermediate Low level, simple sentences are enhanced by use of prepositional phrases, helping verb usage, as well as some adverbs and a variety of adjectives.
I generally create independent sentences (ideas) that can be moved around without affecting the overall meaning of the response. There are still a number of errors in my response, but I have fairly good control of more basic sentences. I am feeling more confident in using different structures and expanding vocabulary and taking more risks with my responses.
Ang masayang experience ko - maglaro ng soccer. Nag-lalaro ako ng soccer araw-araw kasama kaibigan ko. Naglalaro kami sa kasama mga kaibigan ko sa school team. Sa championship, naglaro ako lahat ng laro at nag-goal. Masaya ako kasama kaibigan at pamilya. Kumain kami ng pizza pagkatapos ng game. Gusto ko ang soccer.
At this level, I can now create enough language to show groupings of ideas.
My thoughts are loosely connected and cannot be moved around without affecting meaning.
I can also create a few sentences with complexity and am able to use some transition words. I am also able to use more than just simple present tense, but often make mistakes when I try to use other tenses.
My vocabulary use is expanding and I am able to use more than the usual, high frequency or most common vocabulary. I feel that I am able to create new language on my own and communicate my everyday needs without too much difficulty.
Marami na masayang bagay sa buhay ko. Marami akong masayang memories. Isa na pinakamasaya ay ang paglaro ng golf. Naglalaro ako ng golf noong limang taon ako. Gusto ng nanay at tatayo ko mag-golf noon bata pa sila. Tinuruan nila ako ng marami sa golf. Noong nasa highschool ako, naglaro ako sa school team. Magaling kami. Tinuruan ako ng coach ko. Natuto ako ng maraming bagay na importante ngayon. Natutunan kong huwag magalit. Minsan, hindi maganda ang pag-tama sa bola kaya nagagalit ako. Hindi na maganda ang paglaro ko. Magaling ang coach ko mag-turo.
At this level, I have good control of the language and feel quite confident about an increasing range of topics.
There are still some occasional errors in my language production, but that does not hinder my ability to communicate what I need to share.
I can use circumlocution to explain or describe things for which I do not know specific vocabulary or structures. I can understand and use different time frames and am just beginning to develop the ability to switch most time frames with accuracy. I can use transition words and concepts with some ease. My language has a more natural flow, but I still may have some unnatural pauses or hesitations.

At this level my response contains a number of complexities with higher degree of accuracy.
Such language allows me to address each aspect of the prompt more completely and with more depth of meaning.
I am able to use Advanced vocabulary or Advanced terms, conjugations etc. with confidence. I feel that I can create natural flow using as much detail and descriptive language as possible to create a clear picture. Errors with more complex structures may still occur. My ability to switch time frames begins to increase in accuracy.

I am able to create a response which not only addresses each aspect of the prompt, but delves into each point with clarity and concise language.
I am able to incorporate a number of more complex structures as well as Advanced vocabulary and Advanced phrases with a higher degree of accuracy throughout the majority of the response.
The language I create has a natural flow due to the way I incorporate a variety of patterns and complexities into my response. My response shows my ability to create language that has sophistication of language skills and syntactical density. My ability to switch time frames accurately is evident, if called for in the prompt.

Natutunan ko ang halaga ng pagtatrabaho at naisip ko kung ano ang mga kaya kong gawin. Sa kabuuan, ito ang karanasan na nagbukas ng mundo no posibilidad at sa ganoong rason, ito ang pinakamasayang karanasan sa buhay ko.

I always looked forward to being a teenager. I imagined myself going to the mall, watching movies with my friends, or simply hanging out at each other's houses. At 13, I already mapped out my summer plans and the only thing left to do was for summer to arrive. However, as fate would have it, my grandfather suddenly passed away in May 2005. While grieving at his sudden loss, my parents decided to send me to the Philippines to study English. They thought that it was the best way for me to learn the English language. I was instantly aghast at the idea because the plan was for me to stay with an aunt I hardly knew, a country I was not familiar with, and a language I hardly understood. When my parents talked me into it, they painted a picture of warm, sunny weather, and beautiful sceneries to visit. In my young mind, the idea of living away from my parents excited me and scared at the prospect of living in a place too far from them. I initially thought about my friends. I also thought about how my summer plans changed suddenly. I was a wreck full of questions: Will I be able to fit in? Will I have new friends? Can I adjust in my new environment? With so many questions in mind, I slowly resisted the idea. But my parents were firm in their decision to send me to the Philippines and live with my aunt and brother. In two months after my grandfather passed away, I flew in the country. From the airport, we travelled farther up North of Manila to Baguio City. While Manila was hot and humid, Baguio City was the total opposite. Pine trees lined up the roads and the breeze chilly. Spring and autumn define the Philippine weather and strangely, the country has only two seasons, the dry (sunny) and wet (rainy) seasons. Clear skies as well as nice and accommodating people make up for a relaxing atmosphere. Popularly known as the City of Pines, scenic attractions and a rich cultural heritage attracts both local and foreign visitors all-year round. Sunflowers surround the hills from November to May as other wild flowers grow along the hillsides. Despite the tranquil weather, peaceful ambiance, and friendly people, I still found myself terrified and reluctant to make friends with the other kids in the neighborhood. Wherever I looked, my eyes searched for my friends, hoping that they would miraculously enter the gates of my new international school. I felt really sad and alone even though my classmates comforted me. But the language barrier isolated me from the rest of them. As they laughed at each other's jokes, I stared at them blankly while I deciphered what they just said. I struggled with English and Tagalog, the local dialect. I could not adjust in my new environment because I knew in my heart I wanted something else. Because I could not communicate with them easily, the more I felt alone, confused, and resentful. In my young mind, I could not comprehend how my parents could allow me to study away from them and live with virtually strangers. My aunt and her family became my second family and through them, I slowly coped and understood the language. Auntie often told me that I should give my new classmates a chance to know me as much as to give myself an opportunity to know them as well. She advised that I should stop comparing my Filipino classmates with my own classmates back home lest I judge them without the benefit of knowing them on a more personal level. I did as she told me and I slowly removed the walls I built around myself. Soon, I realized I have nice and kind friends just as the ones I have back home. I gradually warmed up to all of them and soon, I already spoke in English and Tagalog faster just like them. Why? Because entire class served as my personal tutor. As months passed by, I found myself enjoying Baguio City especially the Crystal Caves, Burnham Park, Camp John Hay, Mines View Park, and the Maharlika Mall where I buy locally made arts and crafts. I remember the times my cousins and I would bike around Burnham Park and ride the boats in the manmade lake pure bliss indeed! Soon enough, Baguio became my "home away from home". In all these, I still remember Auntie's advices on making friends and withholding judgment before knowing another person. Had I not listened to her, I would probably have ended lonely, friendless, and depressed at the tender age of 13. In addition, the experience helped me become independent as it gave me courage to pursue life and my dreams on my own. Thanks to my Auntie, all the lessons she taught me are still with me as I use them to guide me in my everyday relationships with others.
