I love watching them, while the classes are going on, but right now for the Durga Utsav, the school is closed. There is a small dispensary with a doctor and a nurse. They can take care of basic illnesses like fever and stomach pain. For complicated ailments and medicines, the people have to go to the neighboring town. There is a small grocery shop where the basic necessities for sustenance are available. Besides the grocery shop, there is a tea stall with some snacks available. The tea stall is the prime meeting point for all the villagers during the evening time, even in other hours of the day the stall is never empty. It is always full of people sipping tea and chatting, breaking the world’s news to each other. There is a post office in my village.

My favorite spot is a small rivulet. I love going there and spending time because beyond the rivulet lay are acres of grasslands and hills. For an artist, it will be a perfect picture to paint. All, young and old swim and bathe in the rivulet. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. The people in my village are very helpful and they live in harmony with no grudges. They live like one big family who always takes care of each other. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city.

In origin, I’m from Bangladesh. But after the partition, my family came and settled in a remote village in Murshidabad. Presently, I stay in Kolkata with my parents, but several times I have heard my father remember his childhood days in the village.

During the vacations, I often visit the village. People are so innocent there and all of them love us so much. They care for their nature and do not harm it like the urban people. Also, they have still kept their tribal festivals intact. I love to enjoy their traditional food and this bonding between my people in the village. Since my childhood days, I used to fantasize about spending my life in our ancestral village. Staying in a village has never been an opportunity for me because I am born and brought up in the city. Due to no pollution, we always have a majestic view of the mountains from our village. Around 50-50 families live in our village. He sits on a cot and teaches all the classes one by one. He works hard with his students. He is devoted to his work. He is afraid of the inspecting officers of the Education Department. He prepares the classes day and night and the school premises are also swept neat and clean when an inspector is to visit the school. After the visit, he is again free and rests on his oars.

An acquaintance recently sent me an article from "The New Yorker", re Moscow's traffic problems.

One classic quote worth taking from it, is: "People will endure all manner of humiliation to keep driving".

I do find it odd that the "New Yorker" article author says nothing at all about the rail transit system Moscow had, on which everyone was obliged to travel, under Communism. It can't surely have vaporised into thin air?

Moscow is a classic illustration of just how outmoded rails are, and how important "automobility" is, when the auto supplants rails so rapidly than even when everybody did travel on rails up to a certain date, and the road network dates to that era, when nobody was allowed to own a car; an article written just 2 decades later does not even mention the rail transit system, other than to criticise the mayor for "failing to invest in a transit system".......!!!!!!!!

This is also a give-away of "The New Yorker's" inability to shake off the modern PC ideology on rails vs cars.

Productions of plays in America’s high schools have been increasingly under attack. In 2023, Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” was rejected in Tennessee (since it deals with adultery); “August: Osage County,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts, was canceled in Iowa after rehearsals had begun (the community was deemed not ready for it); and in Kansas, students were not even allowed to study, let alone stage, “The Laramie Project ,” a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the murder of a gay student, Matthew Shepard.

It should come as no surprise, then, that in the Educational Theater Association’s most recent survey, 85 percent of American theater teachers expressed concern about censorship . Even Shakespeare is at risk: In Florida, new laws led to the restriction of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to grades 10 through 12 and “Romeo and Juliet” could not be taught in full to avoid falling afoul of legislation targeting “sexual conduct.” Kill off young people’s exposure to theater, and you kill off a generation of playgoers, along with the empathy and camaraderie (already in short supply) that are intrinsic to theater. According to the latest report from the National Endowment for the Arts , from 2017 to 2022 the percentage of Americans who went even once a year to see a nonmusical play dropped by roughly half, from about 10 percent to less than 5 percent.

What begins as a war on theater never ends there.

The current attacks on theater in American schools have their origins in a struggle that took place in the late 1930s, when America’s political leadership believed that the arts, no less than industry and agriculture, were vital to the health of the Republic and deserving of its financial support. There was still an implicit understanding that theater and democracy — twinborn in ancient Greece, spheres where competing visions of society could be aired and debated — were mutually dependent. Funded by Congress as part of a Works Progress Administration relief bill and established in 1935, the Federal Theater Project by 1939 had staged over 1,000 productions in 29 states, seen free or for a pittance by 30 million spectators, or roughly one in four Americans, two-thirds of whom had never seen a play before.

It brought children’s plays on touring trucks to kids in crowded cities. It staged works in Spanish, Yiddish and Italian to reach immigrants. It established what it called Negro units from Hartford, Conn., to Seattle to support Black actors and playwrights. It staged Christmas plays and classics by Shakespeare and Euripides and nurtured young playwrights and directors, including Arthur Miller and Orson Welles. It brought free theater to asylums, orphanages, hospitals, prisons and veterans’ homes. It revived playgoing in rural states where the movies had all but ended it. Ten million listeners a week tuned in to its radio broadcasts. It established ties with hundreds of educational, fraternal, civic and religious groups, strengthening communal bonds.

It turned out that Americans were hungry for plays about issues that mattered to their lives, topics largely shunned by Hollywood and the commercial stage. So they flocked to see new plays about substandard housing and the plight of struggling farmers. One of the most remarkable Federal Theater ventures was a stage version of Sinclair Lewis’s novel “It Can’t Happen Here ,” in which a fascist is elected president of the United States. It opened on the same day, Oct. 27, 1936, in 18 cities across the country, and by the time it closed, more than 379,000 Americans had seen it. The cost of these thousand or so productions to taxpayers was roughly the price of building a single battleship.

The program’s popularity contributed to its undoing. Many of those in Congress who had voted to fund the Federal Theater became frightened by its reach and impact, its interracial casting, its challenge to the status quo — frightened, too, perhaps, by the prospect of Americans across racial, economic and political divides sitting cheek by jowl in packed playhouses.

Three years after the creation of the Federal Theater, Congress authorized the establishment of what would become the House Un-American Activities Committee, chaired by Martin Dies of Texas. It was to supposed to spend seven months investigating the rise of Nazism, fascism and communism in America and submit a report. The ambitious Mr. Dies, desperate to have his committee’s life extended, instead focused much of his attention on a more vulnerable target: the Federal Theater, accusing it of disseminating offensive and communistic and therefore un-American values. In the course of waging and winning this battle, he assembled a right-wing playbook so pervasive that it now seems timeless. He succeeded wildly: All Federal Theater productions were abruptly terminated in 1939, and the House Un-American Activities Committee lasted until 1975. With a nascent national theater now destroyed, targeting theater in schools was the inevitable next step for his successors, who — whether cynical politicians or school board members eager to police what offends their sensibilities — have all stolen a page from the Dies playbook.

It’s hard to imagine what America would be like today had support for the Federal Theater continued and Mr. Dies’s committee not been renewed. Counterfactual history is best left to novelists. But a more vibrant theatrical culture extending across the land might well have led to a more informed citizenry and, by extension, a less divided and more equitable and resilient democracy. What happened instead was that Mr. Dies begat Joseph McCarthy, who begat Roy Cohn, who begat Donald Trump.

Some of those familiar with this history haven’t given up. Right now, artists are preparing projects that on July 27 will open simultaneously in 18 U.S. cities and towns, much as “It Can’t Happen Here” did in 1936 . Under the rubric of Arts for EveryBody, the initiative is bringing together performers, audiences, community leaders and local officials. It is a small start and a promising one. So, too, is legislation coming before Congress, the STAGE Act of 2024, that would provide badly needed support for endangered nonprofit theaters across the land. Passing it should be a no-brainer, but there’s a likelihood that the Dies playbook will be used to defeat it. Until those in power in this country pivot from suppressing theater to investing in it, it’s not just the arts but also democracy itself that remains vulnerable.

Religious Diversity

Home to major religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism, India’s religious diversity is a testament to its pluralistic society. This multiplicity of belief systems coexisting is one of India’s greatest strengths, fostering a culture of mutual respect and tolerance. The peaceful cohabitation of diverse religious communities, however, is occasionally challenged by conflicts, underscoring the need for continuous dialogue and reconciliation.

Linguistic Diversity

With over 1,600 languages and dialects spoken, the linguistic diversity in India is staggering. Hindi and English are widely used, but state-specific languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Bengali hold equal importance. The Indian constitution’s recognition of 22 official languages is a clear indicator of the country’s commitment to embracing its linguistic heritage. This diversity is also evident in literature, with works ranging from the ancient epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata to modern writings in various vernaculars.

Every language embodies the history and customs of its people and reflects a unique legacy. The Indian Constitution, which affirms India’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural preservation, recognises and defends this diversity by defending the rights of linguistic minorities and fighting for the preservation of endangered languages.

Geographical Diversity

From the snowy peaks of the Himalayas in the north to the tropical beaches of the south, India’s geographical diversity influences its climate, agriculture, and lifestyle. This diversity not only dictates the economic activities of different regions but also shapes the cultural identities of the people, from the attire they wear to the food they eat.

India has breathtaking geographical diversity, with the sun-kissed beaches of the south and the towering Himalayas of the north, as well as the lush forests of Kerala and Rajasthan. In addition to influencing regional traditions and means of subsistence, this geographic diversity has given India an unmatched biodiversity. India is a large country with a diverse range of natural environments, including deserts, evergreen forests, steep mountains, perennial and non-perennial river systems, long coastlines, and fertile plains. Its total land area is 3.28 million square kilometres.

While significant achievements have marked India’s journey since independence, the shadow of colonial influence still lingers, impacting perceptions and values. Not coming to Tuttle Royale: Village says no to plan for $30,000-a-year private school

ROYAL PALM BEACH — The Village Council has rejected an offer from a national school network that sought to open a private K-12 school with an average annual tuition of $30,000 inside Tuttle Royale.

Royal Palm Beach Mayor Fred Pinto told representatives of Basis Independent Schools that the high costs of the private institution would price out most of the residents who will live in the community, now under construction at Southern Boulevard and State Road 7. The school would have been Basis' first in Florida.

"This is not about whether or not you have a quality product,” said Pinto during a council meeting on Thursday, April 18. "This is about this location and what we decided we want for it.”

“You should consider potential sites in Wellington," Pinto added, directing Basis to the village's affluent neighbor.

The Basis Independent Schools is a network of private academic institutions in Brooklyn, New York, the Silicon Valley near San Francisco Bay and the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. The schools charge $30,000 annual tuition and feature two-teacher classes and courses led by "subject expert teachers," according to its website.

A Basis representative told council members that the school would fit in with Tuttle Royale's character, considering its high-end retail stores and restaurants and that single-family homes within the community are expected to be sold for close to $1 million. The school would have 1,500 students and could offer up to 10 half or 20 quarter scholarships to help cover the cost for village residents.

The representative argued the COVID-19 pandemic had changed the area's education market and insisted the village would struggle to attract a charter school. Pinto scolded him.

"You don't choose what goes on this site," Pinto said. "We do."

"They're going to have to work through that and deliver what we promise for our people,” he added.

Council members Jeff Hmara and Jan Rodusky sided with Pinto in the 3-2 vote. Hmara said his biggest concern was that the Basis school would be placed in the middle of a community where most families couldn’t afford to enroll their children. Apartments under construction in Tuttle Royale will rent for about $2,500 a month, or $30,000 a year.

“Your child's education would be the same cost as your housing,” Hmara said.

Rodusky said the 10 half-scholarships offered wouldn't be enough to let most Tuttle Royale students attend.

Council member Richard Valuntas said he didn’t think the private school would drastically alter the character of the community. He and Selena Samios voted to approve the zoning change.

“There's evidence that it will change,” Valuntas said. “It isn't going to change it enough.”

Brian Tuttle, the developer behind Tuttle Royale, spoke against the private K-12 school at the meeting. He said the mixed-use development was designed to include a public or charter school to serve its residents, so families could walk their children to the campus.

Tuttle added its 1,600 residences will create demand for the charter. A private school would "drive a stake into the heart of the live-work-play community,” he said.

"Tuttle Royale was never designed and planned with a high-end private school, where the affluent residents from Wellington and downtown West Palm could bring their kids into each day and then leave with them," Tuttle said in a letter to the village. "It was designed for the people of Royal Palm Beach."

Village manager Ray Liggins said other developers building homes in Tuttle Royale also opposed the private school.

Pinto said the charter school was a key element for the council to agree to place the high-density residences along Southern Boulevard 10 years ago.

He said a private school would attract families from outside affluent communities that would drive into Tuttle Royale and force the 1,200 children expected to live there to drive out to public schools.

"If those students are able to stay in that community to go to school, there is no traffic impact," Pinto said. "Everything is self-contained."

NYU pro-Palestinian protesters cleared out by NYPD, several arrests made. See the school's response.

NEW YORK -- A pro-Palestinian encampment at NYU was cleared out by police Monday night, resulting in several arrests.

The NYPD moved in on the demonstration at Gould Plaza near the Stern School of Business just after 8:15 p.m. and started taking down tents and making arrests.

CBS New York's Dan Rice reported at least two dozen demonstrators being taken to four police buses. While that was happening, protesters started throwing objects in the direction of police officers.

"We stand with Palestine and we stand with the liberation of all people," one protester said.

After the police moved in, many protesters relocated to a location on West 3rd Street in Greenwich Village, not far from the Stern School of Business. Others carrying signs started marching peacefully in Lower Manhattan.

Earlier in the day, students took over the school's steps and were also joined by what appeared to be some faculty members. Several pro-Palestinian organizations gathered in solidarity. They also set up the aforementioned tents.

"Unity is power. We're all here in unity to support Gaza, Palestine," student Carter Bui said.

NYU officials said there was a breach in barriers set up there.

"We witnessed disorderly, disruptive and antagonizing behavior that has interfered with the safety and security of our community," the head of security said.

What the protesters are demanding

Demonstrators had been ordered to clear the plaza area by 4 p.m. Monday.

"We want to see an acknowledgment from our university that there is a genocide happening and that there are Palestinian students that deserve to feel heard, deserve to feel safe in their environment, and deserve to have a university who calls out the genocide of their people," one said.

"It's definitely helpful to see there are a lot of people from our school who support the movement and are not scared of our school's response," another said.

Across the street from the rally was a group standing with the flag of Israel. One of them had only one thing to say.

"There's one side here and one side of history. This is the right side here. That's all I have to say," the person said.

Earlier in the day, CBS New York met two people who were in disagreement -- one pro-Israeli, the other pro-Palestinian -- but they came together to have a constructive conversation.

"At the end of the day, people that want the best of the situation, they want the most peaceful most desirable situation for everyone," an NYU junior named Jacob said.

"I feel like a lot of people should get out here more and if you don't know what's going on, educate yourself first," freshman Kimora Davidson said.

NYU: "We will continue to support individuals' right to freedom of expression"

NYU released the following statement on Monday night:

"Today's events did not need to lead to this outcome.

"This morning, some 50 protesters began a demonstration on the plaza in front of the business school. This occurred without notice to the University, and without authorization. The University closed access to the plaza, put barriers in place, and made clear that we were not going to allow additional protesters to join because the protests were already considerably disruptive of classes and other operations in schools around the plaza.

"Nonetheless we made no move to clear the plaza at that point because high among the University's aims was to avoid any escalation or violence. So, the University was deeply disturbed when, early this afternoon, additional protesters, many of whom we believe were not affiliated with NYU, suddenly breached the barriers that had been put in place at the north side of the plaza and joined the others already on the plaza. This breach was in violation of directions from Campus Safety Officers and in violation of multiple University rules.

"This development dramatically changed the situation. We witnessed disorderly, disruptive, and antagonizing behavior that has interfered with the safety and security of our community, and that demonstrated how quickly a demonstration can get out of control or people can get hurt. At one point, we explained to the protesters that they needed to disband in an hour, and there would be no adverse consequences.

"Nevertheless, many refused to leave. We also learned that there were intimidating chants and several antisemitic incidents reported. Given the foregoing and the safety issues raised by the breach, we asked for assistance from the NYPD. The police urged those on the plaza to leave peacefully, but ultimately made a number of arrests.

"We will continue to support individuals' right to freedom of expression, and, as we have said since October, the safety of our students and maintaining an equitable learning environment remain paramount."

Education In Villages

Education should be given more weight in the villages. Despite the fact that villages are gradually opening schools, many of the villagers still choose to keep their children from school. They do not feel the need to educate the girl kid because they think she will have to take care of the home responsibilities. Most individuals only complete their primary or secondary education because most villages lack higher secondary institutions. The children must go to a big city to pursue graduation or post graduation. For fear of losing them, the majority of villagers are unwilling to send their children to the cities.

Village Life Versus City Life

Village life is quite simple and peaceful. Because there are fewer technical advancements and industries to contaminate the environment, pollution levels are low in villages. The air is fresh enough to breathe. There are numerous areas where one can play or walk. In villages, there is no rush or traffic of any kind.

Village life is more exciting and calm than city life. The speed of life in cities is accelerating. People who live in cities lack both emotions and time for the people in their area. Cities also have higher crime rates. People who live in cities often travel to their town for relaxation when they become overwhelmed by city life's stress and hectic pace.

My village is a typical Indian village situated in the state of Bihar. I visit there every summer vacation for at least 20 days. People lead a very simple lifestyle.
