Online Games Good or Bad Speech

Online Gaming is a new fad amongst all age groups today especially amongst teenagers which has its own advantages and disadvantages. Online Games Good or Bad Speech is among the ASL Topics and we have composed two sample speeches that can help you prepare for your English assessment.

Online Game: Good Or Bad Speech Sample 1 [400-500 words]

Good morning everyone! I am ABC and today I stand before you to present an insightful and informative speech on whether Online games are good or bad? Online gaming is a double-edged sword that has its own share of merits and demerits. Post pandemic most of our life has become virtual and hence, being completely cut off from online gaming is impossible and even if possible, it will do more harm than good as children and teenagers will be deprived of leisure. Coming on to the bright side of online gaming, there are a plethora of benefits of online gaming as they hone our Analytical thinking, inculcate the importance of Goal-oriented Behaviour as a lot of online Games involve missions and levels which requires really good gaming skills, and online gaming makes teenagers more prudent and alert. India has witnessed a huge boom in the gaming market because the majority of our population is young, mobile phones are available at low cost, and easily available on the Internet. India is among the top 5 online mobile gaming industries and as per research which shows 30 percent of people believe playing online games enhances cognitive skills. Playing online games helps teenagers connect with their peers as most of the teenagers play online games and also if played within limits then it is a really good leisure activity. Now after exploring the merits, we will now understand the dark side of online Gaming. Playing excessive online games reduces our interest in other important activities like academics, outdoor sports. Moreover, all day of sitting and playing online games is detrimental for physical and mental health. Also at times, kids can download games from unsafe sources which may bring viruses to their mobile phone or PC. Also, these games are highly addictive in nature which not only distorts focus but also inhibits delayed gratification among children. Playing action games frequently makes children impulsive and aggressive. The research found that gaming addiction is correlated with low-self esteem, negative beliefs about one’s self, and poor social relationships. Be careful while playing online games, as the most attractive game can be the biggest distraction that can hinder you from achieving your goals and dreams. Now after taking both merits and demerits of online gaming into consideration it is safe to say that online games are beneficial as well as harmful depending completely on us whether we allow these games to overpower our willpower or not. Otherwise if played in limit playing games can be a rewarding experience as well.

Online Game: Good Or Bad Speech Sample 2 [200-300 Words]

Good morning everyone! I am ABC and today I stand before you to present an insightful and informative speech on Online games: good or bad? Just like a coin, online gaming has two sides that must be understood comprehensively. First, we will explore the bright side of online gaming and some of the benefits of online gaming can’t be ignored as it helps us in improving our critical thinking skills as games with tough missions and levels require us to think critically, encourage out of the box and solution-oriented manner of thinking as some missions in a particular game may require spontaneity and smartness in order to crack those missions. Also if played within limits, online gaming, especially with friends, can be a rewarding experience indeed after a tiresome and hectic day at work or College and it improves the presence of mind and alertness. Now further, let’s explore the dark side of online gaming. Some of its demerits are that it takes up a lot of our time, if we get addicted to it and it also deviates us from our main goals and work. Playing violent and action games can definitely instill violence and aggression in our behavior. Thus, we must be cautious of online gaming and play these games within the limit as playing them excessively can hinder our social relationships and affect our health. After taking both the pros and cons of online gaming into account, it is advisable to play online games but only within a limit so that it does not overpower our willpower.

2 Minute Speech on the Impact of Computer Games on Youth

Red Lighted Candles Christmas Gift

Until some years ago, when children talked about games it meant team games like football , cricket , hockey, basketball, shuttle, tennis and the like. But today games are more or less dominated by computer games in the minds of youngsters.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Again, until some time ago, blue whale was the answer to the question “Which is the biggest animal on earth?” But no longer. Blue Whale is the name of an online computer game played over social networks which encourages youngsters to do certain tasks ending in suicide.

So let me spell out the topic for my speech. It is the Impact of Computer Games on Youth. It is very clear that youngsters interact with video games in much deeper ways physically, emotionally, and mentally than with other popular media like films. You can also read Gaming as Career, Entertainment, and Addiction! for further insight on gaming.

First let me focus on the benefits of computer games.

Many claim that computer games improve co-ordination, attention, concentration and problem-solving skills. It also enhances memory, helps in multitasking capability and can also be used as excellent teaching tools.

There are video games like building a city or helping others. These can help a youngster to be socially responsible and behave with care and concern for others.

Computer games, some people say, help youngsters to get familiar with the online world. It allows them to become smart kids and builds perseverance in them as many computer games have different levels which the gamer has to master.

Quick thinking, fast analysis, intelligent use of resources and management, planning and strategy and situational awareness are some other benefits that people highlight.

Let us assume that all these are good. Let us now look at some of the negatives.

Very young children are also exposed to the world of computer gaming. Sometimes these games can encourage violence and crime. So there should be a supervision of what type of game is played.

Secondly, the amount of time one spends on computer games have to be limited. There are known cases of people spending long hours on games without eating, mingling with friends or studying. This affects health as well as the person’s ability to interact with other people face to face.

Thirdly women are generally portrayed in games as weak and as kind of objects. It is a kind of negative stereotyping. It can wrongly impact the young boys and the way they treat women.

Again, there are studies which show that video games can lead to aggressive behaviour because of constantly playing games which require the gamer to take part in violence.

Another difficulty with video games is that parents rarely spend time with their children trying to find out what games they play. So parents lose a chance of bonding with their children; they lose the chance to spend quality time with their kids and of course they lose the chance to understand what type of behaviour change is occurring in their children because of the video games they play.

Finally, there is the danger of not differentiating between the real world and the fantasy world. Unless the youngsters are taught between the differences in the gaming world and the real world there can come moments of confusion and disappointment.

Let me conclude by saying that we cannot forget the fact video games and gaming have become a multi-billion dollar industry . It might easily be the fastest growing entertainment in the world today. The high quality of graphics giving a greater sense of virtual reality is drawing people more and more into a different world far removed from the real one. And it is impacting youngsters in a big way. Only time will tell of how the life of youth changed with video games dominating their play, study, thinking, and relationships.

Jesus Is Risen!

Computer Games Essay

This page analyzes a  computer games essay  and also notes how you can make good use of the question to plan and organize your essay.

You have to be careful with this essay as although you have to discuss the pros and cons of the issue, there is a second part to the question that is not about this.

Take a look at the IELTS task 2 question:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

What are the positive and negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

The Topic and the Task

Remember to always analyze the question carefully. The topic should be fairly clear:

  • Computer games

Remember to also look carefully to see if the topic is being narrowed down to a particular aspect of the topic. In this case it is:

Children Computer Games Essay

Now you need to check what the task is. How many things do you have to write about?

Hopefully you realized there are three things that you can easily turn into brainstorming questions:

  • What are the positive impacts of computer games on children?
  • What are the negative impacts of computer games on children?
  • How can the negative impacts be minimized?

Your answers to these questions will form your computer games essay.

You do not have much time and you have three things to answer, so one or two ideas for each is enough, as remember you will need to explain your ideas and give examples.

Now, take a look at the model answer.

Computer Games Essay Question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Computer Games Essay Model Answer:

Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to avoid the potential negative effects.

With regards to the positive effects, playing computer games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult.

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according to their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally, parents should also take an active interest in the games their children are playing so they can find out how they feel about what they are observing.

To sum up, there are benefits of computer games, but there are disadvantages too. However, if parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.

( 295 Words )

This computer games essay is well-organized and it directly answers the question, with each paragraph addressing one of the tasks.

Note how the topic sentences match the tasks (which have been taken from the prompt):

  • What are the positive impacts of computer games on children ?

With regards to the positive effects, playing computers games can develop children’s cognitive skills.

  • What are the negative impacts of computer games on children ?

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain.

  • How can the negative impacts be minimized ?

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps.

This is why analyzing the question is so important. This provides you with the basic building blocks with which to write your essay.

7 talks on the benefits of gaming

[ted id=1618]

This weekend, hundreds of video games enthusiasts lined up in the cold, waiting 12 hours-plus to be the first to get their hands on Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U. And when the game  Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in 2010, gamers around the world played it for more than 600 million hours in just the first 45 days. That is the equivalent of 68 years.

While some people worry about the popularity of video games, in today’s talk, brain scientist Daphne Bavelier suggests that gaming may be far more beneficial than we think (in moderation) — even if the game is all about shooting up the enemy.

“Most of you have thought, ‘Come on, can’t you do something more productive than shooting zombies?’ I’d like you to put this knee-jerk reaction in the context of how you’d feel if you found your girl playing Soduku,” Bavelier says. “In reasonable doses, action-packed shooter games have quite powerful positive effects on many different aspects of our behavior.”

In the lab, Bavelier and her team measure the impact of gameplay on the brain. While your mom might have told you that staring at screens will wreck your eyes, Bavelier’s lab actually found that playing 5 to 15 hours a week of video games correlates with better vision — and the ability to see more detail in the context of clutter.

It’s another common trope that gaming causes attention problems. However, Bavelier shows data that people who play video games are better able to keep track of objects around them — while the average person can track three objects effectively, video gamers can track six to seven objects. They’re also better able to multitask in general.

Initial studies suggest that these benefits may be trainable. In one study, Bavelier’s lab gave participants a test, and then asked them to play 10 hours of video games over a period of two weeks. When they came back for a post-test, their performance improved — and the improvement was still measurable five months later. Bavelier’s lab hopes to use these findings to create games that can improve eyesight or help keep the brains of senior citizens sharp.

To hear more about Bavelier’s studies, watch her talk . And after the jump, six other talks that suggest video games may simply have a bad reputation.

[ted id=799]

Jane McGonigal: Gaming can make a better world Video game designer Jane McGonigal is deeply inspired by video games like World of Warcraft — because they call on players to become heroes and save worlds.  In this blockbuster talk from TED2010, she shares why she thinks it’s possible to harness the power of gaming to solve real-world problems like hunger, poverty, climate change and war.

Gabe Zichermann: How games make kids smarter Gabe Zichermann wishes that we could channel the era of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? —when students, parents and teachers agreed that video games were great. In this talk from TEDxKids@Brussels, Zichermann suggests that video games make kids better at problem-solving and multitasking, and should be championed rather than villainized.

[ted id=1053]

Ali Carr-Chellman: Gaming to re-engage boys in learning Many boys are having a hard time in school—they’re disproportionally suspended, marked as learning disabled, and diagnosed with ADHD. In this talk from TEDxPSU, Ali Carr-Chellman ponders whether this could be a simple culture clash. She shares a fascinating idea — that creating educational video games full of rich narratives could help boy culture connect with school culture.

[ted id=996]

Tom Chatfield: 7 ways games reward the brain Video games are transfixing, says Tom Chatfield at TEDGlobal 2010. Why? Because they offer emotional rewards and satisfy our ambitions. In this talk, he wonders if other tasks — for example, going green or losing weight — could be made fun by emulating the brilliance of game design.

[ted id=1501]

Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life After a severe concussion, Jane McGonigal found herself on mandatory bedrest and feeling deeply depressed. In this talk from TEDGlobal 2012, she shares how she found her way out of a downward spiral — by creating a video game, SuperBetter , that helps people heal. ( Check out the TED Blog post: 10 online games … with a social purpose .)

[ted id=361]

David Perry: Are games better than life? Speaking in 2006, game designer David Perry says we’re at an interesting moment in video game history—where graphics and audio have gotten extremely lifelike. Which means that the next generation (meaning: now) could have games that actually surpass real life. While Perry is excited for what’s to come, he points out that video game makers have a big responsibility given their influence and reach, and hopes that his industry will rise to the challenge. What do you think: Has it?

Regular visitors of  With a Terrible Fate  may recall that, last February, I delivered a speech as part of the Lowell House Speech Series at Harvard University. In it, I discussed my decision to pursue the study of video game philosophy instead of medicine. This year, on 1.26.16, I delivered another speech as part of that same Speech Series; in it, I discuss why video games are worth playing and studying at any age.

I offer the transcript below, in full:

What are video games good for? I study the stories of video games, so I worry about that question a lot. I want to share one way I think the special stories of video games, and the way we engage them, teach gamers to learn from one another.

We often try to communicate with one another by referencing our experiences. We argue about aspects of society that offend us; we talk about aspects of our identities that other people lack direct knowledge of – if you are a woman and feel that your employer treats female employees worse than men, you might want me to understand what that is like, although I am a man. We want to convey to others what it is like to be us – but how can we, when others have no way of standing in our shoes?

Video games can help us share who we are. Let me explain why.

When I was in high school, I played a little-known video game called “ Nier .” The game tells the story of a man, Nier, who will stop at nothing to save his daughter, Yonah, from a deadly plague. The emotional depth and complexity of this game were what first motivated me to study and analyze video games in school. If you haven’t yet, you owe it to yourself to play it some day.

At the same time that I dove into analyzing Nier , I also felt compelled to share the game with two of my closest high school friends, Dan and Nate. Just as I wanted everyone I knew to read The Catcher in the Rye after I first encountered the classic in middle school, I now wanted Dan and Nate to experience this game. One after the other, I passed my copy of the game along to Dan and then Nate in the hall between classes.

But when I spoke with them both after they handed the game back to me, I discovered something I hadn’t expected: although they had played the same game as I had, we each made different choices in the game—something that couldn’t have happened if we’d all seen the same movie or read the same book. I had focused on exploring the secrets of the game’s world, digging through virtual basements for classified government records to learn what had caused the apocalypse. Dan focused instead on exploring the relationship between Nier—the player’s character—and Yonah. He completed quests collecting food for Yonah, and she surprised him by making him a cake to thank him. Nate found the desolate wasteland of the game depressing, so he completed it once and moved on.

As I discussed Nier with my friends over lunches and in between classes, I learned about my friends and myself through the choices that we each made. We talked about how a single story prompted us to act differently from one another, and we accounted for our actions. Through these conversations, I learned how much Dan valued the intimacy fathers share with their daughters; I learned that Nate wanted to be excited about the environments of video game worlds, so that he could jump at the opportunity to explore them. Through these conversations, I began to articulate to my friends my desire to unravel mysteries.

Video games allow players to share their experiences with one another by grounding them in a common story. Games invite players to enter a single world, chart their own course through it, and compare their journeys with their friends. By giving us a special position in an artistic world, our choices become part of the work of art—something we can discuss and make meaning out of with others.

When I think about video games’ practical value, I always reflect on the degree to which they can unify people and allow them to understand and share their way of being. This invitation to share ourselves with others is the hidden utility of the engaging, epic stories waiting in the many worlds of video games.

But be warned, it can take a lot of work to get to know someone else—so you may just need to spend many hours playing video games.

2 Minute Speech On The Esports In English

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on esports. Competitive gaming is known as esports, and it has gained a lot of worldwide popularity. Millions of committed followers watch games online while millions of players compete in several tournaments and events. Obviously, esports differ greatly from traditional sports like football and baseball, but because they have a sizable fan base and competitive gaming, many people claim that esports are legitimate sports.

Real-time strategy games, first-person shooters, and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games all fall under the umbrella of electronic sports, or eSports. Dota 2, League of Legends, and most recently Heroes of the Storm (HoTS) have become more well-known as eSports games.

In order to manage their schedules and daily needs, eSports teams hire coaches and managers in the same way that professional sports teams do. The market for eSports is currently rapidly expanding, boasting multimillion-dollar deals and billions of fans worldwide. It is anticipated that more people will start watching eSports both online and on television.

Singapore’s eSports scene has never developed to the same extent as that in the US, Europe, China, Korea, or even Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia. In such nations, it is feasible to pursue a career as a professional gamer and earn a living. Daryl Koh, a competitive Dota 2 player who once represented Singapore, said, “It is not simple for every Singaporean to pursue eSports with the army and reality, which is why I went to China to join a new team to follow my goals.” Thank you.

Public Speaking Games

7 fun-filled speech activities for kids of all ages.

By:  Susan Dugdale   | Last modified: 03-29-2022

If you're looking for fun-filled  speech activities  check these out.

There are  7 tried and tested  public speaking games  on this page - ones that have been a great 'yee-haa-hooray' splendiferous success for me.  You'll find they'll adapt easily to suit children of all ages;  from around middle school to adulthood and don't require a great deal of set-up preparation.

  • Connect the dots
  • Tell us the history of
  • Story starters
  • The big fat lie
  • In the news today

More public speaking games

  • Guidelines for the games

Use them in your class room, with the members of your speech club, as an extension activity for a life skills or communications program, or for home schooling with your family.

They'll help by-pass anxiety, develop and nurture competent, confident public speaking skills, and do it with a large, welcome dollop of fun!

A line drawing of a team of happy people each giving a thumb's up sign. Text: We say YAY to public speaking games.

*  If you're not sure about how to introduce games to your class or group, scroll down to the foot of the page. You'll find handy 'how to begin' guidelines there.

1. Connect the Dots

Connect the dots - 6 dots with an arrow running through them, linking them up.

How to play

Prepare a collection of word cards each with a familiar noun on it. You'll need at least 100. They could be names of famous people, common objects, colors, animals ... For example : bird, wheelbarrow, hammer, cow, witch, moon, grass, hat, elephant, computer, book, vase, elbow, photo, green, candlestick, shoe, painting, mug, plane, eclipse, Queen Elizabeth,  operation, halo, knife, eye, storm, girl, pillow, lid, thermometer, jungle, barn, wheel, thistle, steam, mud, bike, pink, Madonna  ...

Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story needn't be long, (one to two minutes is enough), complicated, or true!

Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

What this game teaches

In a word - transitions!

Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

Connect the Dots gives people the opportunity to practice.   It doesn't matter how disparate the "dots" or ideas  appear to be, a way can be found to link them, and with practice the ability to make those connections will become stronger and stronger.

An added benefit of the game is listening and learning from each other.

Connect the Dots - an example story

I've picked my two words. They are Queen Elizabeth and bike, and here's my speech!

"When you think of Queen Elizabeth, what do you see in your mind? Do you see an older woman wearing a diamond studded tiara staring grimly into the camera?

That diagonal sash across her chest proclaims dominion over the commonwealth realms. These include countries as diverse as Canada and Barbados - 32 of them in all. That's serious leadership - around 128 million people, including Prince Phillip, her husband, their four adult children, assorted wives and grandchildren.

Her daily duties would make most of us wince. She answers letters, talks to government officials, reads briefing papers, plans her diary, makes calls to charities, hospitals, factories, schools, museums or military units, performs civic duties like openings and investitures, and tours . That routine hasn't varied for the last 56 years. The Queen is an institution, revered and respected.

But she's also a person. And despite how difficult it may be to imagine, she'll have good days, bad days and days when, in the words of Cyndi Lauper, a girl just wants to have fun.

In my imagination, she wants to poke her tongue out at all the 'must and mustn't dos', toss the tiara sideways and shuck off the designer gowns.

She'd like to walk barefoot through wet grass and float on her back down a summer stream blowing bubbles. She'd like to gallop a horse around Hyde Park without a minder and in the afternoon ride a bike. Starting at the top of Primrose Hill she'll fly down, pedals whirring, yelling 'Look Ma no hands.' It will be glorious. It will be wonderful, and she will be free.

Perhaps it was a glimpse into unfettered being that convinced her to take up sky-diving with James Bond for opening of the 2012 Olympics. 86 years old and starring in a royal performance. She showed us. It's never too late to 'get on yer bike' in whatever form it takes. God save the Queen!"

2. Tell us the history of ...

Image: 3 zebras in grassland. Text: How the zebra got his stripes - Tell me the history of ... a public speaking game.

Prepare a starter list of events or things. Write them on slips of paper.

For example: a postage stamp, birthday cake, books, a zebra's stripes, a chimney, the tooth fairy, common sayings like 'a penny for your thoughts', 'a red rag to a bull', 'a pinch and a punch for the first of the month', April Fools Day, a wheel, a Christmas tree, ice cream, a ladder, Father Christmas, May Day, a siren, shaking hands on meeting someone...

Put the topic cards/papers into a non-see through bag.

When it's their turn a player pulls a topic from the bag. They then must give an account of the history (story) behind the thing or event they've drawn.  It needn't be factual!  Encourage imagination, outrageous lies, flights of fantasy...

The goal of this public speaking game is sustained credible fluency. Aim for 1 - 2 minutes per story.

3. End lines

Image: a pair of hands, palms up, with an image of the world on them and flying white doves. Text: Love makes the world go round. End lines - a public speaking game.

You'll need a collection of endings written on slips of paper.

For example: 'Just do it', 'Diamonds are forever', 'He's fallen in the water', 'Some like it hot', 'His bark is worse than his bite', 'Love makes the world go round', 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away', 'First up, best dressed', 'King for a day', 'Funny money', 'Laughter is the best medicine'...

Put the end lines into a non-see through bag.

Each player takes a turn to take an ending from the bag. The task is to tell a 1-2 minute story ending with the line they have selected.

4. Story Starters

Gothic thunderstorm scene - haunted house, dark skies

Write opening sentences or phrases on slips of paper. You'll need one for each member of your group and then some more. For example: 'It was a dark and stormy night', 'I wish people would not say...', 'Yesterday I saw a herd of cows ', 'My favorite activity is bird watching', 'The wisest saying I ever heard was...', 'In 20 years time I will be...', 'It made me yell', 'All I want for Christmas is...', 'Something is terribly wrong...', 'The little voice inside my head...', 'This is the secret I've never shared before', 'I never knew what happened...', 'Sometimes I just want to...', 'You know it's Summer when...', 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you', 'The story made me want to...','I heard the best news this morning', 'The sound of people laughing...'

Put the slips of paper into a non-see through bag.

Nominate a person to begin. He/she reaches into the bag and pulls out a story starter. The starter they've drawn must be used to open their story.   A story can be built and extended however the speaker wishes.

5. Oink Substitution

A large pink pig jumping with the word OINK superimposed over its body.

In this game a commonly used word is chosen and then substituted with the word ' oink '. For example: If the selected word is  I , the speaker says  oink  instead.

Oink  can be played several ways.

Playing Oink using well-known stories

Make copies of well-known children's stories. For instance - Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man or Three Little Pigs. (You will find many of them here: american literature.com has hundreds available.)

Next choose a regularly occurring word in each piece to substitute.

Eg. The word 'she' would be suitable in The Gingerbread Man story . Here's the opening paragraph given the 'oink' treatment.

"One day, the cook went into the kitchen to make some gingerbread. OINK took some flour and water, and treacle and ginger, and mixed them all well together, and OINK put in some more water to make it thin, and then some more flour to make it thick, and a little salt and some spice, and then OINK rolled it out into a beautiful, smooth, dark-yellow dough."

Decide who is to start. Ask them to choose a story. They are to read aloud for approximately one minute making sure they use 'oink' in place of the selected word.

Repeat for each member of your group.  Try to have each new reader of the same story pick up from where the last reader of it left off rather than repeat the same passage.

Encourage authoritative readings, full of passion and drama!

Using Oink as an extension activity

Another way to play  Oink  is as an extension of already known games. Try it with  One Minute Speeches , Story Starters or End Lines.

Once your group is confident, add the ' oink ' factor for even more fun! You'll find substitution hones thinking-while-you're-speaking skills really well.

6. The BIG Fat Lie

Young woman with her dog sitting on a mountain ledge high above the clouds.

This game encourages the use of the imagination, develops fluency and, it's fun. In playing it your group will learn about body language too. How do you know when somebody is lying? How can you tell?

Each speaker is to stand so that everyone can see them clearly and share 3 things about themselves on a theme you set.

Examples of theme: holidays, the future, my favorite after school activities, when I was young, my beliefs, the best books I've read, the best adventures I've had..., my family...

Two of the things they say about themselves in relation to the theme are to be true. The third is not .

When they've finished speaking, ask the class/group to identify the lie. And when they have, ask them how they knew. What alerted them to it being untrue?

PS. This makes a great icebreaker for groups getting together for the first time.

7. In the News Today

Image: Cartoon girl on newspaper background. Text: Introducing Milly Reed with today's headline news.

In the last activity making up of this collection of 7 public speaking games, your class/group are broadcasters, anchor people for a news show.

The news is whatever has happened during the day. It could be an event on the way to school like a traffic jam. It might be a new menu in the canteen or lunch room. It could be an announcement the principal made.

It doesn't matter how trivial the happening; encourage the big news treatment for anything at all, even a new set of pencils!

The aim of the exercise is give whatever subject they choose the standard news format. They'll need to cover who, what, where, why, when and how .

Once they've mastered that encourage experimentation; adding introduction hooks, on-the-spot interviews, switch backs and summaries.

Before you begin the games with your class

Lead in guidelines.

Taking the time to set the games up will ensure they go well and go on to become an accepted and eagerly anticipated part of your classroom activities.

  • If your class is new to playing public speaking games start with the simple activities first, for example, the Story Starters.
  • Model or demonstrate each game before you ask them to play themselves.
  • If it's too threatening to have the entire focus of the class on one person at a time - split into smaller groups of 4-6 players and have them work simultaneously. It will be rowdy but worth it!
  • Establish your ground rules for positive participation. You can check out the ones I used in my teaching here: rules for public speaking games
  • Include full class quickfire feedback sessions at the end of each game. I found these invaluable for drawing attention to and reinforcing what had been done well. Be sure to acknowledge any gain - not matter how small!
  • Keep the timing snappy. Too much of any one particular activity will become tedious. Keep it flowing along.

What's the difference between the freebie public speaking pages and your ebook?

Public speaking games - ebook cover

The ebook has the best of all the games on my site (including the ones on the pages above) and then some more.

Plus, it has full instructions for using each of the games and printables. It is the type of one-stop-time-saving resource I wanted to find when I was full time teaching and didn't .

My freebie pages are good but if your commitment to leading/teaching a public speaking class is ongoing, the ebook is better, more complete.

10 Most Riveting Speeches In Video Games

These speeches heighten the gameplay experience as they sometimes motivate players to put in more effort during critical gaming moments.

Video games often blend fun with commentary. There are many games out there that have a character tell a riveting speech, one that makes the player think and ponder the reality of the person speaking the powerful words. Fictional, or not, the words spoken by characters can truly be both inspiring or upsetting.

RELATED: RPGs With The Most Romance Options

There is a great deal of iconic video game characters that give speeches , either to the player, or their crew. Some are entirely compelling and make the player forget that they are holding a controller. What can make these speeches harder to listen to, is when a boss fight is brewing. So, which riveting speeches in video games can be considered iconic?

10 The Healthy Human Mind (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)

As the penultimate mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ’s campaign, “ Just Like Old Times ” features a grandiose speech from Captain John Price. As his ally, Soap, asks for Price’s input, he is met with silence, until Price begins to audibly philosophize on death.

RELATED: Why Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Won't Feature Zombies

Price’s speech is cold and somewhat morbid. It’s a great look into his mind and his goal. “ We will. Kill him .” That’s it, that is the mission. Price will forever be a soldier, and his speech to Soap teaches him a valuable lesson on doing whatever it takes to make sure true history survives.

9 More Powerful Than Any Weapon (Mass Effect 3)

As the climax in Mass Effect 3 ramps up, Commander Shepard performs their final speech to their Comrades . The Mass Effect games have held some great speeches, thanks to Commander Shepard’s charisma and intellect. Yet, there’s something poignant about their final speech.

Shepherd rallies their friends and comrades-in-arms, and the player can choose what Shepherd says to their friends. It makes the speaker feel that much more personal, and that much more emotional; knowing how close the player has become with their crew, before entering perhaps the final battle as Commander Shepard, and the lats look of their friends.

8 Dear Humanity (Halo 2)

The fourth campaign mission of Halo 2 features Master Chief on Old Mombasa, Earth, with his fellow Marine soldiers. The introduction cutscene of this mission, “ Outskirts ”, has the characters ponder on the mystery behind the message they received, which repeats “Regret, Regret” in a loop.

The intensely charismatic Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson wastes no time in deciding on what “ regret ” means. His speech is extremely short but gets the point across. He talks of how the aliens will regret coming to Earth. It’s funny, and Sergeant Johnson rallies his troops with one large “ oorah !”

7 Free To Follow Our Own Path (Assassin’s Creed 2)

A compelling speech, from one of gaming’s most iconic characters, and most iconic assassins . Assassin’s Creed 2 features Ezio Auditore giving a speech to the Italian people about the profound identity of individuals, the freedom of choice, and forging one’s path.

RELATED: Assassin's Creed: Games With The Best Cover Art, Ranked

Ezio proves with this speech just how wise and strong he is. It’s a beautiful speech and one that sums up Ezio’s character growth perfectly. From a rebellious youth to one of the bravest, and greatest leaders of the new Assassin order. There’s a reason why Ezio Auditore is so well remembered, even after the conclusion of his story.

6 There Is Light In The Darkness (Fallout: New Vegas)

Fallout is a franchise that is no stranger to the weird, the wonderful, and the compelling. Fallout: New Vegas provides fans of the Fallout franchise with a plethora of interesting characters. Characters that make the player debate their choices for a while.

One character is Joshua Graham, introduced in the Honest Hearts DLC. Toward the end of the DLC, Joshua offers a glimmer of hope, even after the horrific circumstance of his being and location . This is because Joshua has been burned to near death. Joshua speaks of religion and the importance of family. It’s a grand speech.

5 My Fellow Americans (Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus)

Those that chose the Wyatt timeline are given a riveting speech in the genre-defining franchise sequel, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus . At the end of the game, Wyatt provides those watching live television with a great speech. After the victory of the Nazis in an alternate timeline, Americans were left on their knees.

Wyatt gives warnings to the Nazi regime, as a hopeful song softly strums in the background. Wyatt’s passion can be felt through the television screen, and it’s entirely infectious, patriot, and in search of the liberty that belongs to a free country, and a free people.

4 I’m Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain)

As gunfire and explosions rage across Outer Haven, Big Boss takes one last look at himself in the mirror before heading off to the latest, and potentially last, confrontation, in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain . It’s here, that Big Boss remembers all those years ago, and discovers “ The Man Who Sold The World ”.

“Venom” Snake listens to a recording from Big Boss, who tells “Venom” who he is. “ I’m Big Boss, and you are too. ” Big Boss is so inspirational , and grand, that a man willingly changed his entire identity to reforge the laws of the world. It’s epic and perfectly wraps up the Metal Gear saga.

3 Vorkuta Burns (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

The second campaign mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops follows Alex Mason and Viktor Reznov starting an uprising to escape Vorkuta, the brutal Soviet Labor Camp in Northern Russia. As the men rally to a radio tower, Reznov delivers a powerful speech to help invigorate the men escaping, as it echoes across the labor camp.

His speech is nothing short of riveting, and it rallies even the harshest critics to Reznov’s side. He speaks of war, the exploitation of young men for their country, and how it is now their time for victory. The speech is the perfect call to action, as the imprisoned of Vorkuta seek death over enslavement, even though, a Thundergun easter egg would have helped too.

2 I Fight (The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim)

There is a uniqueness to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim for its story. Not only does the player embark on the journey of the Dragonborn, to fight the evil Alduin the World-Eater, but they are also faced with the decision of war. The player can embark on either side, the Imperials, or the Stormcloaks.

The leader of the Stormcloaks is Ulfric Stormcloak, the Jarl of Windhelm. The civil war in Skyrim is over the Nords and their rights to their freedoms and right to beliefs. He gives a powerful speech on why he fights, and even if the player opposes Ulfric’s rule, they cannot fault his dedication.

1 Life’s End (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)

Hideo Kojima’s creative genius has no end, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is no exception. When The Boss betrays Naked Snake, he ventures through the game in wondering why she would betray her country, and him in particular.

At the final confrontation, The Boss provides Snake with a great speech. It’s a one-sided conversation in which Snake just listens, and is enthralled by her words. It’s one of the saddest scenes in the franchise. His love for his mentor is strong, and The Boss is encapsulating, and beautifully tragic. She’s one of the greatest characters in Metal Gear , and her character had a domino effect on the entire franchise.

27 Free Online Games for Speech Therapy You Need to Know About

Teletherapy speech therapy activities like these 27 open-ended online games make planning easy! Find easy games for toddlers like Colorful Ships and great games for bigger kids like Frost Bite and Basketball. #speechsprouts #speechtherapygames #speechtherapy #teletherapy

Online games that are quick to play are perfect for speech teletherapy.

Like many SLPs right now, I’m a newly minted teletherapist due to school closures during the COVID 19 pandemic. After three months of diving into speech therapy telepractice this spring, I quickly realized that I need more tricks up my sleeve to keep my students engaged with me online! Thirty minutes of pure drill time wasn’t cutting it. It wasn’t long before they started looking at me with eyes that said “What else have you got?”

And…like a bunch of you, I’ll be headed back to school seeing my students online, at least for now. So it’s time to gather up some great resources to keep participation and interest high!

It’s important to mix it up with a variety of activities to keep students engaged during online speech therapy sessions.

Especially the youngest ones. Gee- in that respect it’s not unlike in-person sessions, is it?

I may have 2-3 different activities during a session. including books, real games (I take their “turn” for them in front of the camera), puppets, toys for the younger crowd, riddles, and worksheets we could draw or write on with annotation tools. I also love Boom Cards  and digital resources like interactive pdfs. I like to get my kiddos up and moving sometimes too. We all need that!

Online games are a favorite activity for my speech therapy students.

No prep for you, fun for them. If you are using a platform like Zoom where you can give your students control, any of these games are great. If you can’t give students control, look at the online board games that automatically advance. You can click the dice for your students.

I keep a document of links on my desktop so I can head over to a great online game quickly during a session. Ready for a list to make your teletherapy planning easier? Here you go!

Here are some of my favorite sites for engaging, quick-play online games.

I’ve played a lot of games y’all, and I’ve listed games from these sites that load easily, are quick to play, motivating, and won’t take away too much therapy time! You may want to look through the main sites and see if there are more games you love.

Games that are a bit more challenging:

Poki Cut the Rope Feed the monster strategy game

Online dice and spinners for any game

Toy theater is great for these. These can be a game in themselves. Who will rack up the most points? Throw the dice or spin a spinner.

Dice:  Colorful online dice in many shapes and sizes

Spinners; Choose spinners for either colors or numbers. You can choose how many spaces on the spinner too!

Online games are great to use in in-person therapy too.

Play them on a  tablet, computer or project them on a whiteboard for instant engagement. Huge bonus- you don’t have to lug these around as you travel from school to school or setting!

Don’t forget to pin this post to save it for later when you need a fresh, motivating activity for your kiddos.

Are you still needing to provide send-home materials, either printed or virtually?

I hope you’ve found some games you and your students love. Please leave a comment if you’ve found any more terrific open-ended games we should know about!

Speech on Chess

Chess is a timeless game, a battle of strategy and wit. It’s a two-player contest, where you and your opponent command an army of 16 pieces each on a 64-square board.

The joy of chess lies in its complexity. Each move you make can lead to a myriad of possibilities, making every game a new challenge.

1-minute Speech on Chess

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today we talk about a game that has stood the test of time – Chess. This game is not just about moving pieces on a board. It’s a battle of minds, a thrilling adventure right on your table.

Chess is a game of strategy and planning. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The goal is simple – protect your king while trying to checkmate the opponent’s king. But don’t be fooled. This simple goal needs clever thinking and smart moves.

Think of chess as a story. The board is your stage, and the pieces are your characters. Each piece has a role to play, a part in the story. The pawns may seem small, but they are brave soldiers. The rooks are like castles, strong and steady. The knights are the heroes, jumping over obstacles. The bishops are swift, moving diagonally. The queen is the most powerful, and the king, he is the one you must protect at all costs.

Playing chess is like planting a tree. It needs patience. It needs time. You cannot rush. Each move is like a seed you plant. With careful tending, it can grow into a winning position.

Chess is also a great teacher. It teaches us that every move has consequences. It teaches us to think before we act. It shows us that even when things look tough, there’s always a way out.

So, let’s embrace this beautiful game. Let’s learn, let’s play, let’s enjoy chess. Because chess is not just a game. It’s a journey of the mind, a journey worth taking.

2-minute Speech on Chess

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about chess, a game that has been around for over a thousand years. It’s not just a game; it’s a journey, a battle of wits, a test of strategy and patience. It’s like a great book that you can’t put down, a puzzle that keeps you guessing, a dance where every move counts.

Chess is a game of two armies on a tiny battlefield. Each piece, from the humble pawn to the mighty queen, has a role to play. The king, though not the most powerful, is the most important. If he falls, the game is over. The aim is simple: protect your king while trying to checkmate your opponent’s king.

Chess is a universal language. It doesn’t matter where you come from, how old you are, or what language you speak. When you sit down at a chess board, you communicate through the game. Chess is played in parks, in schools, in homes, and even online. It brings people together, bridges gaps, and builds friendships.

But chess is not just about winning or losing. It’s a teacher in disguise. It teaches us about planning, about thinking ahead, about making decisions. It teaches us that every action has a consequence. It teaches us to stay calm under pressure, to be patient, and to never give up. It shows us that even when things look bad, there’s always a way out, a way to turn things around.

Chess also helps us grow. It sharpens our minds, helps us focus, and improves our memory. It’s like a gym for our brain. Research shows that kids who play chess do better in school. They are better at problem-solving, at understanding complex ideas, and at making decisions.

Finally, chess is fun! It’s thrilling to plan a clever attack, to trap your opponent, to escape from a tricky situation. It’s satisfying to see your plans work out, to win a game after a tough fight. And even when you lose, you learn something new, something you can use in your next game.

In conclusion, chess is more than just a game. It’s a tool for learning, a bridge between cultures, a workout for the brain, and a source of endless fun. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, whether you play for fun or for glory, chess has something for everyone. So, pick up a chess set, learn the moves, and start playing. You’ll be amazed at where this ancient game can take you. Thank you.

15. Man of Medan

short speech about computer games

Platform(s) : PS4, Xbox One, PC

What is it? A cinematic, choose-your-own-adventure style horror story from Supermassive Games, the makers of Until Dawn.

Average time to complete: Five hours

The first episode in an ongoing anthology horror series from Supermassive Games, Man of Medan is probably the shortest yet slickest interactive scare-fest on the market right now, coming in between four to six hours long... depending on how many of your characters survive through till the end.

Sign up to the GamesRadar+ Newsletter

Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more

The best part about Man of Medan is its novel, rather brilliant "co-operative" mode, in which you can play online or locally with friends, all of whom can be responsible for different characters throughout the seafaring horror fest. It can take a while to get going in the early hours, but Man of Medan is easily a stellar choice for any Halloween party, not least because of how quickly it can be beaten.

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch

What is it? Interactive walking sim about the history of a cursed family living in the woods.

Average time to complete: Three hours

You know how it’s often the single stanza poems that are the most powerful? What Remains of Edith Finch is the video game equivalent of that, roughly three hours in length but presenting an emotional range and depth that’s richer and more affecting than dozens of other, much longer games to have released in 2017.

Developer Giant Sparrow craft a series of bite-size vignettes, akin to an anthology of short stories, but while each tale differs in gameplay variety, all share a bittersweet fondness for childhood, family, and friendship that tugs at the heartstrings (and the tear ducts) in ways you won’t be expecting. Set aside a cold, rainy evening by the fire for this one; it’s a must play.

14. Paradise Marsh

Paradise Marsh

Platform(s): PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

What is it? A relaxing adventure that sees you explore a picturesque marsh to catch critters.

Average time to complete: Two hours

Paradise Marsh from solo developer LazyEti is a delightful little adventure that sees you set out to catch critters in the landscapes of the wetlands. While you can complete it in a short amount of time if you want to, you're free to go entirely at your own pace and soak up the scenery as you try to collect frogs and bugs. As you'll discover, the stars have fallen out of the sky and spread out across the marsh.

By catching critters, you begin to restore the stars and complete constellations, which take the form of the wildlife that can be found. With plenty to discover, Paradise Marsh is a short game that leaves a lasting impression.

13. Pikuniku

Platform(s): PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

What is it? A surreal puzzle adventure game in which you play as leggy redhead. No, I'm serious.

Average time to complete: Four hours

Where to start with Pikuniku, to try and describe it in a few sentences, let alone explain why it's worth playing. Should I wax lyrical about the cheeky, pitch-perfect writing, which clearly hasn't heard of such a thing as a fourth wall? Or maybe I should focus on the game's smart visual economy of colour and shape, where not a single line is wasted to establish a world of simple pleasure? And we wouldn't want to forget about the amazing puzzles and mini-games, where a new experience lies around every corner...

Ok, you probably get the idea by now. Pinuniku is a charming, joyous delight from start to finish, and you should absolutely play it, preferably on Switch, where Nintendo's dinky console is the perfect fit for the jubilant tone and tactile gameplay that its four-person development team were going for.  Plus, the whole adventure only takes about four hours to see through the end (perhaps five, depending how much of a completionist you are). That's approximately 240 minutes of unfiltered joy in a box, and you'd be a right Pikuniku to miss it.

12. Abzû

What is it? Dream-like exploration game set entirely underwater.

“It’s like Journey, but underwater” is the description you often hear thrown towards Abzû , and while the two share several strands of DNA - wordless interaction, a focus on showing not telling, breathtaking visuals, and a simple yet potent story - as well as a composer (Austin Wintory) and creative director (Matt Nava), Giant Squid’s first title is entirely its own thing.

Water levels are a notoriously unpopular trope in gaming, but Abzû turns the sea into a subaquatic paradise, both from an aesthetic and gameplay standpoint, presenting the deep blue in a way that’s both inspiring and threatening in its natural immensity. You can complete Abzû in just over two hours, and trust me when I say that it’s a deep dive you’ll want to see through to the end.

11. Donut County

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, iOS, Android

What is it? You play as a raccoon who gobbles up a city with a giant, remote-controlled hole. I’m dead serious.

Average time to complete: Two hours

If the product description isn’t enough to sell you on Donut County alone, just take a look at that average time to complete. You’re signing up to a breezy two hours of animal antics, millennial humor, and the chance to engulf an entire city into an ever-expanding hole. That’s a lot to pack into just 120 minutes but, by Zeus’ beard, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Donut County is neither particularly challenging or lively, but eating up every person and thing as the ominous hole is a strangely satisfying experience, and creator Ben Esposito’s internet humor-inflected writing driving the story is merely the cherry on top. There’s even an underlying metaphor about the damage of gentrification on local culture if you want something to chew on come the end credits but, at its core, Donut County is a small shot of therapeutic catharsis.

10. A Short Hike

A Short Hike

Platform(s) : Xbox One, PS4, PC, Switch

What is it? A relaxing indie adventure where you make your way to the summit of a peaceful mountainside.

In a Short Hike from developer adamgryu, you play as a bird called Claire as you try to make your way to the top of a mountainside in the serene Hawk Peak Provincial Park. Meeting other hikers along the way, you can climb, hike, and even soar through the sky as you explore at your own pace. There are also chances to do a spot of fishing, and collect hidden treasures. You can make your way to the summit in quite a short time and finish the game, or you can just take things slow and enjoy the peaceful landscapes of this delightful, pixelated world.

9. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe

Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch

What is it? Self-aware parody of video game storytelling, featuring a guy named Stanley.

The amount of time you’ll spend playing The Stanley Parable depends on how long you’re willing to go along with its idiosyncratic meta-commentary on the nature the video game medium. Anyone who’s played enough single player campaigns will find something to laugh at with The Stanley Parable’s fourth-wall breaking satire. And if you've played before, the Ultra Deluxe packs in yet more surprises to catch you off guard and delight you.

It’s an annoyingly clever game, rapidly firing out the sort of shrewd observations about life, the universe, and everything that you wish you’d had come up with before hearing them. More than that, though, The Stanley Parable is a bona fide hoot, eliciting genuine laughs through each session you play.

8. Gone Home

What is it? Interactive narrative experience with puzzle elements and an emotional dramatic underlay.

Gone Home set the standard for modern walking simulators in 2013, with a short but sweet yarn that strikes a deeply personal tone and sticks to that intimacy for the whole two-hour jaunt. It threads a story through the narrative frame of a bright twenty-something returning home after some extended time abroad, exploring her old stomping grounds as she reminisces on her upbringing and figures out what’s happened since she last set foot in the house.

You never meet a single other character in the game, but Gone Home’s realistic dialogue makes you feel as though you’ve known every member of the Greenbriar family for a lifetime, which is especially impressive when you realize just how breezily the story whizzes through its neatly segmented chapters.

7. Inside

What is it? You’re a boy running from.. something in a dark, despondent 2D platformer.

What is Inside actually about? Industrialization? Amoral science? A comment on the illusion of agency in video games? You’ll spend more time thinking about Inside than actually playing Inside, which is a testament to its staying power as a persuasive, provocative, and outright perturbing work from Limbo developers Playdead.

Over the course of four hours, Inside jumps between a smorgasbord of gameplay ideas using its 2D platformer format, never content to stick with one for any amount of time that would make it feel too familiar, ensuring an unpredictability that plays well against the story’s paranoid overtones. The last 20 minutes of the game are a lovecraftian descent into madness, but when you understand the significance of what it all means… well, you’re on the path to realizing that Inside is nothing short of a mini masterpiece.

6. Superhot

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS VR, Switch

What is it? Subversive first-person shooter where time only moves if you do.

Superhot is just as hyper-stylized and uber-sexy as The Matrix, but you could play it, enjoy it, and complete it in a shorter amount of time than it would take to watch the first movie in its entirety. That’s an offer you can’t refuse, especially when the high-concept gunplay is this good.

The basic premise for Superhot is that time moves only when you do, but it’s far from a basic game, presenting high-stakes combat challenges that can almost feel more like puzzles than gunfights, even as the action remains as punchy as any other great FPS romp on the market. It’s a two-hour action ballet show where you can feel every blow thrown and bullet fired, resulting in the best micro mind-trip you could hope for.

5. Limbo

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

What is it? Side-scroller set in an ethereal, hellish landscape filled with all kinds of dangers.

The Ancient Greeks believed that bad people were doomed to the underworld for eternity, but Limbo has you exploring its damp, decrepit caverns for just a little over three hours. That’s not to say it’s a breezy excursion; this 2D platformer manages to terrify and terrorize the player using nothing more than silhouettes and devious timing, but you’ll be damned if you’re not going to keep pressing on as the plucky, young boy you find yourself in control of.

Limbo is the little platforming masterwork that first put Playdead on the map eight years ago, and even if you’ve heard people singing its praises a million times by now, its snappy pace and forward-thinking design has not lost any of its magic to this day.

4. A Way Out

A Way Out

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

What is it? A split-screen co-op game that has to be played with another human being, either locally or online.

Average time to complete: Six hours

A Way Out is by far the longest game on this list, as it takes an average of six hours to complete its story, but the extended evening binge is well worth the journey with a friend, enjoyed together either through the wonders of the internet or right next to each other on the same couch. Created by Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons ’ Josef Fares, A Way Out is a co-op game like no other, maintaining and experimenting with the split-screen format that is usually deployed as nothing more than a necessary evil to accommodate local multiplayer.

Two players will take the roles of Vincent and Leo, a pair of convicts on a high-stakes prison break, and your subsequent escape is essentially made up of a diverse series of mini-games, all of which revolve around tight co-op mechanics. It’s a unique, well-crafted experience, with a surprisingly engaging story at its heart... Just make sure the person you’re playing with is one you don’t mind spending six consecutive hours alongside.

3. What Remains of Edith Finch

Platform(s): PS4, PC, iOS

What is it? Therapeutic odyssey across a glistening desert landscape.

Completely wordless, deliberately cryptic, and nary a hint of a user interface in sight, Journey is two hours long, but its legacy will last a lifetime. The story seems like nothing more than vague symbolism at first, but developer thatgamecompany communicates its message through a bespoke set of gameplay languages and rhythms that elevates Journey’s narrative into something much greater, almost indescribable in its experiential impact.

It’s also one of the few multiplayer games to feel truly seamless in its interactions with other players, and you’ll still find fellow strangers making the same treacherous odyssey online to this day. There are hundreds of theories and analytical think pieces as to what it all means, but - at its core - Journey is exactly what it says it is; an expedition from point A to point B that all of us can relate to in some way or another.

1. Firewatch

What is it? A story-focused first-person adventure where you play as a newly recruited park ranger running from a troubled past.

With Firewatch , Campo Santo condenses the events of several months into a 4 hour, lightly interactive adventure set in the Wyoming wilderness, and the results are as good as you’d expect from a story penned by the lead writer of Telltale’s The Walking Dead. With award-winning central performances from its two leads - Rick Sommer and Cissy Jones - Firewatch uses Ollie Moss’ striking depiction of rural America as the backdrop for a meditation on ageing and remorse.

There’s more uplifting moments in there too, and Campo Santo’s knack for the written word creates some genuinely amusing moments, but it’s most touching scenes derive from when these two humans, Henry and Delilah, are at their most vulnerable. Firewatch’s story is a little on the disappointing side, deliberately undercutting its central mystery with something much less exciting than it makes out to be, but you’ll have been glad to embarked on this brief getaway to the country either way.
