What is an Informative Essay?
An informative essay is a genre of writing aimed at educating the audience on a particular topic or subject. This type of essay doesn’t just offer facts but also provides insights and explanations to help readers understand the subject matter more deeply. Unlike persuasive essays, which aim to convince readers of a particular viewpoint, informative essays are neutral; they do not express the writer’s personal opinions or arguments.

You are probably thinking of a clever way on how to get away from the situation where you probably have not ever dreamed of. However, it is a task that we should all be thankful for. Essay writing actually brings more benefits than browsing through those social media platforms that you have already memorized. It does not only sharpen your minds and makes you more creative than putting likes and hitting shares of your friends’ post. The ability to share something from your mind is definitely a plausible act.
Informative Essay Format
Crafting an informative essay requires a structured approach to organize the wealth of information in a way that’s easily understandable to the reader. The format of an informative essay typically consists of three main parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Following this format helps in developing a coherent and logically flowing essay that effectively informs the reader.
Introduction
The introduction sets the stage for the entire essay. It should start with a hook that grabs the reader’s attention, such as a surprising fact, a question, or a vivid description of the topic. Following the hook, provide some background information to help readers understand the context of the essay. Finally, the introduction should end with a clear and concise thesis statement that outlines the main points or aspects of the topic that will be discussed. This statement acts as a roadmap for the essay, guiding the reader through the information presented.
Components of the Introduction: Hook : Engages the reader’s interest. Background Information : Provides context for the topic. Thesis Statement : Outlines the main points to be discussed.
Body Paragraphs
The body of an informative essay is where the main information is presented. It should be divided into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific point or aspect of the topic. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the point to be discussed. Follow this with supporting details, such as facts, examples, statistics, and quotes from credible sources. Each paragraph should be coherent and focused, contributing to the overall argument or presentation of the topic.
Structure of Body Paragraphs: Topic Sentence : Introduces the main idea of the paragraph. Supporting Details : Facts, examples, and evidence supporting the topic sentence. Transition : Smoothly connects to the next paragraph or point.
The conclusion of an informative essay wraps up the essay by summarizing the main points discussed. It should restate the thesis statement in a new way, reflecting the information presented in the essay. The conclusion can also highlight the importance or relevance of the topic, offering final insights or thoughts for the reader to consider. This section should leave the reader with a clear understanding of the topic and its significance. Elements of the Conclusion: Restatement of Thesis : Reflects the main points made in the essay. Summary of Main Points : Briefly recaps the key information discussed. Final Insight : Offers closing thoughts or implications of the topic.
Formatting Tips:
Use clear and concise language throughout the essay. Ensure each paragraph flows logically to the next. Cite sources where necessary to back up facts and claims. Keep the essay focused on informing the reader, avoiding personal opinions.

- Conclude Your Essay : Summarize the main points of your essay, restate your thesis in light of the information provided, and offer a final thought or call to action. This is your chance to reinforce the importance of your topic and the information you’ve presented.
- Revise and Edit : Review your essay for any errors or unclear parts. Check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes. Ensure your writing is clear, concise, and logically organized. It may help to get feedback from others or to step away from your essay for a while before reviewing it again.

Informative Essay — Purpose, Structure, and Examples
What is informative writing.
Informative writing educates the reader about a certain topic. An informative essay may explain new information, describe a process, or clarify a concept. The provided information is objective, meaning the writing focuses on presentation of fact and should not contain personal opinion or bias.
Informative writing includes description, process, cause and effect, comparison, and problems and possible solutions:
Describes a person, place, thing, or event using descriptive language that appeals to readers’ senses
Explains the process to do something or how something was created
Discusses the relationship between two things, determining how one ( cause ) leads to the other ( effect ); the effect needs to be based on fact and not an assumption
Identifies the similarities and differences between two things; does not indicate that one is better than the other
Details a problem and presents various possible solutions ; the writer does not suggest one solution is more effective than the others
Purpose of informative writing
The purpose of an informative essay depends upon the writer’s motivation, but may be to share new information, describe a process, clarify a concept, explain why or how, or detail a topic’s intricacies.
Informative essays may introduce readers to new information .
Summarizing a scientific/technological study
Outlining the various aspects of a religion
Providing information on a historical period
Describe a process or give step-by-step details of a procedure.
How to write an informational essay
How to construct an argument
How to apply for a job
Clarify a concept and offer details about complex ideas.
Explain why or how something works the way that it does.
Describe how the stock market impacts the economy
Illustrate why there are high and low tides
Detail how the heart functions
Offer information on the smaller aspects or intricacies of a larger topic.
Identify the importance of the individual bones in the body
Outlining the Dust Bowl in the context of the Great Depression
Explaining how bees impact the environment
How to write an informative essay
Regardless of the type of information, the informative essay structure typically consists of an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Introduction
Background information
Explanation of evidence
Restated thesis
Review of main ideas
Closing statement
Informative essay introduction
When composing the introductory paragraph(s) of an informative paper, include a hook, introduce the topic, provide background information, and develop a good thesis statement.
If the hook or introduction creates interest in the first paragraph, it will draw the readers’ attention and make them more receptive to the essay writer's ideas. Some of the most common techniques to accomplish this include the following:
Emphasize the topic’s importance by explaining the current interest in the topic or by indicating that the subject is influential.
Use pertinent statistics to give the paper an air of authority.
A surprising statement can be shocking; sometimes it is disgusting; sometimes it is joyful; sometimes it is surprising because of who said it.
An interesting incident or anecdote can act as a teaser to lure the reader into the remainder of the essay. Be sure that the device is appropriate for the informative essay topic and focus on what is to follow.
Directly introduce the topic of the essay.
Provide the reader with the background information necessary to understand the topic. Don’t repeat this information in the body of the essay; it should help the reader understand what follows.
Identify the overall purpose of the essay with the thesis (purpose statement). Writers can also include their support directly in the thesis, which outlines the structure of the essay for the reader.
Informative essay body paragraphs
Each body paragraph should contain a topic sentence, evidence, explanation of evidence, and a transition sentence.
A good topic sentence should identify what information the reader should expect in the paragraph and how it connects to the main purpose identified in the thesis.
Provide evidence that details the main point of the paragraph. This includes paraphrasing, summarizing, and directly quoting facts, statistics, and statements.
Explain how the evidence connects to the main purpose of the essay.
Place transitions at the end of each body paragraph, except the last. There is no need to transition from the last support to the conclusion. A transition should accomplish three goals:
Tell the reader where you were (current support)
Tell the reader where you are going (next support)
Relate the paper’s purpose
Informative essay conclusion
Incorporate a rephrased thesis, summary, and closing statement into the conclusion of an informative essay.
Rephrase the purpose of the essay. Do not just repeat the purpose statement from the thesis.
Summarize the main idea found in each body paragraph by rephrasing each topic sentence.
End with a clincher or closing statement that helps readers answer the question “so what?” What should the reader take away from the information provided in the essay? Why should they care about the topic?

Informative Essay Body Paragraphs
The main body of an informative essay is usually composed of three paragraphs. There are two things that you should consider while composing the body paragraphs of an informative essay. One is the target point, and the second is supporting facts.
Each body paragraph of an informative essay should begin with an idea (topic sentence). This is one sentence statement on which the whole paragraph will be based on. This statement must be in cohesion with the thesis statement written in the introductory paragraph.
After that, provide supporting evidence from the most credible sources. The evidence you provide must relate to your main target point. Don’t forget to quote sources and properly cite information to avoid plagiarism.
At the end of each body paragraph, summarize your points and explain their relevance to the thesis statement. Effective body paragraphs for an informative essay depend on the following points.
- Making a claim
- Evidence in support of the claim
- Provide an explanation in the last
The informative essay can have more than three body paragraphs depending upon the chosen topic.
Tips for Effective Body Paragraphs:
- Do not provide your opinion or point of view on the topic.
- Completely rely on facts and research.
- Discuss the strongest point in the first body paragraph.
- Don’t forget to use transition words for a smooth flow of information in your body paragraphs.
Informative Essay Conclusion
This is the last part where you need to wrap up your information. Begin the conclusion by restating the thesis statement. After that, write about your major arguments and their purpose. The goal of the conclusion is to provide the reason for your informative essay and its importance in the real world.
The conclusion should describe the purpose of your informative essay and what it means for your readers. You should summarize your key arguments and provide a strong closing statement to summarize all your key points.
Tips for a Strong Conclusion:
- Highlight the key points of your argument.
- Do not introduce any new ideas in the conclusion.
- Restate the thesis in other similar words and terms.

In this guide, we’ll delve into key strategies and techniques to help you craft compelling and informative essays that captivate your readers’ attention and convey your message effectively.
Understanding the Informative Essay
Before embarking on your writing journey, it’s crucial to grasp the essence of informative essays. Unlike persuasive or argumentative essays, which aim to sway the reader’s opinion, informative essays primarily seek to educate and inform. These essays present factual information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner, devoid of personal bias or subjective viewpoints. By adhering to this objective stance, you can maintain credibility and authority in your writing.
Selecting a Compelling Topic
The foundation of a successful informative essay lies in the choice of an intriguing and relevant topic. Whether you’re exploring historical events, scientific phenomena, or societal issues, opt for subjects that pique your interest and offer ample scope for exploration. Conduct thorough research to ensure the availability of credible sources and sufficient information to support your discussion.

Structuring Your Informative Essay
A well-organized structure is essential for conveying information effectively in your essay. Begin with an introduction that provides context and previews the main points you’ll cover. Follow this with a series of body paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect or subtopic related to your chosen subject. Use topic sentences to introduce each paragraph’s main idea and support it with evidence, examples, and relevant data. Finally, conclude your essay by summarizing key points and reinforcing the significance of your topic.
To craft an effective introduction for an informative essay, focus on engaging your readers while providing essential context.
Here’s an example of an informative essay introduction following these guidelines:
“Have you ever wondered how social media platforms collect and use your personal data? In an age where online privacy concerns continue to grow, understanding the intricacies of data collection is crucial. In this informative essay, we will delve into the world of data mining by social media giants, exploring how your information is gathered and utilized to personalize your online experience. As we uncover the methods and implications of this practice, you’ll gain valuable insights into the digital landscape and learn how to protect your online privacy effectively.”
This introduction combines a captivating hook, context about the topic’s significance, and a clear thesis statement to engage the reader and set the stage for the informative essay.

How to Start an Informative Essay
Starting an informative essay with a compelling introduction is essential to engage your readers and set the stage for the discussion ahead. Follow these steps to craft an impactful beginning:
1. Grab Attention with a Hook: Begin your essay with an attention-grabbing hook that intrigues your readers and draws them into your topic. This could be an interesting fact, a startling statistic, a thought-provoking question, or a compelling anecdote related to your subject matter.
Example: “Did you know that the average person spends over two hours a day on social media platforms?”

Briefly explain the significance of the subject matter and why it’s worth exploring further. This helps orient your audience and prepares them for the information you’re about to present.
Example: “In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, shaping how we communicate, consume information, and interact with the world around us.”
3. Present a Thesis Statement: Conclude your introduction with a clear and concise thesis statement that outlines the main purpose and focus of your essay. Your thesis should articulate the specific topic you’ll be discussing and the key points you’ll be exploring in the subsequent sections of your essay.

How to Choose Informative Essay Topics
Choosing the right informative essay topic is essential for crafting an engaging and insightful piece. The topic should be interesting, relevant, and informative. So, what is the first step to creating an informative essay? Here are five tips from our custom essay writing service for selecting a great topic for an informative essay:
Identify your interests and passions | ❤️ Start your informative essay journey by tapping into your passions and interests. Consider topics that resonate with you personally, whether it's a hobby, a specific field, or an experience you've encountered. This personal connection not only makes the research process more enjoyable but also enriches your writing with genuine enthusiasm. If you're passionate about environmental sustainability, you might explore ideas for informative essay like the impact of urbanization on local biodiversity, the effectiveness of recycling programs, or innovations in eco-friendly technologies. |
Research current events and trends | 📰 Stay in the know by researching current events and trends that capture your interest. This approach ensures that your informative essay remains relevant and addresses topics that are both timely and engaging. Dive into topics such as the influence of social media on public discourse, the evolving landscape of remote work, or the ethical considerations surrounding emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. |
Consider your audience | 👥 Tailor your informative essay to your audience by considering their age group, interests, and needs. Think about what would resonate with them and what knowledge they might find valuable or intriguing. If your audience comprises young adults, you might explore topics like the impact of social media on mental health, sustainable lifestyle choices, or the role of technology in shaping future career paths. |
Focus on a specific aspect of a broader topic | 🔍 Narrow down broad topics to a specific aspect, allowing for a focused and in-depth exploration in your essay. Instead of tackling the broad theme of 'global health,' narrow your focus to the impact of a specific disease on a particular demographic or the effectiveness of a public health intervention in a specific region. |
Brainstorm with others | 💬 Collaborate with peers, classmates, or colleagues to brainstorm informative essay ideas. Engaging in discussions with others can bring fresh perspectives and novel ideas to the table. Discuss with classmates the potential informational paper topics related to advancements in technology, environmental sustainability, or societal changes. Their insights might lead to unique angles or specific aspects of these broad themes that you hadn't considered. |

Notes for Teachers
Discussions about personal identity, especially early in the year, can be challenging for students. While some students might be comfortable sharing aspects of their personal and social identities, others might be hesitant to do so. It is important that students know that they will not be required to discuss the details of their Identity Chart unless they want to.

Mr Salles Teaches English
How to Write Grade 9 Essay (Including a 30/30 example on An Inspector Calls)
A grade 9 Inspector Calls essay is coming. But this introduction is to help you understand what you should learn from it.
Mark schemes are totally misleading.
Don’t just take my word for it. Ofqual is the organisation set up to oversee all GCSE A level and GCSEs.
They wanted to know how accurate examiners are when they mark. This is what they found: (You can read the full report here).
Nice colours. A bit confusing? Check out the thick black lines. Start with English Lit. The black line is a bit more than 50%. What does it mean?
If a senior examiner gives the exam papers a ‘true’ grade, what is the chance that a trained examiner will give the same grade?
About 54%. It’s basically a coin toss.
Are English teachers stupid? No. The mark scheme is stupid! Want more proof? Let’s scoot over to the far right of our draft and look French, Spanish and physics. Here, the senior examiner and the examiner agree nearly 90% of the time.
Why? Because these subjects are full of right and wrong answers. A later study showed that maths and chemistry were even more accurate. (figure 12 if you are interested).
Well, obviously. Right and wrong answers. No room for debate and expert, subjective opinion.
Why English Marking is so Inaccurate
Teachers do not know this.
The exam boards keep this hidden. Well, you would, wouldn’t you.
We are trained to believe that we can moderate - look at the same essay - apply the mark scheme in all sorts of nuanced and intelligent ways, and learn how to arrive at the right grade.
Totally untrue.
A trained examiner will read 10X the number of essays as a normal teacher. And even they are wrong about the grade - not the mark, a whole grade - 46% of the time.
As a classroom teacher, your chance of awarding the right grade is less than this. It has to be. So, let’s call it 50%. A coin toss. It isn’t your fault. It is because the mark scheme is stupid.
So What is Better Than the Mark Scheme?
Every year AQA publishes a set of answers to that year’s exam, complete with examiner comments, explaining why each one achieved each grade.
This is the result of every Grade 8 and 9 answer (except the full mark answers) that they have ever published. R22 is response 22, R26 is response 26. This is not many responses to draw conclusions from.
But don’t worry, I’ve done this for all the literature texts, and the numbers I am about to show you are very similar for each one.
Let’s look at the numbers:
So, on average, you need to write about 851 words. Don’t think quality is easy. The student who wrote 642 words sounds like a genius, but they got grade 8. They were just slow. If they had written 900 words, they would have scored 100%.
The student who wrote 1197 words is not a genius. They just work hard, write fast. The fastest hand wins the duel. Points make prizes.
It is not rocket science, or PETAL or PRTEZEL, or What, Why, How paragraphs, or indeed any number of paragraphs at all. It is this: keep explaining the author’s ideas.
You need 12 quotes. And you have to explain 32 ideas about those quotes. When the mark scheme talks about your being convincing or sophisticated, that’s all it means. Keep explaining!
You don’t have to name many methods, at just 7, but you do need a whole heap of context - 19 references. That’s what convincing means - keep giving me examples that prove what the author was saying about the time the text was written.
Do you need a thesis statement and a conclusion? Yes. (But astonishingly, you can get a grade 7 by missing one. What is the world coming to?)
Let’s look at the full mark answers:
Just write more explanations!
Now, let’s look at ‘society’ and ‘patriarchal’. 7 and 3 here, compared to Grade 8 and 9 answers, 2 and 0!
Yep, if you write about the author’s view about society, and Priestley attacking the patriarchal control of that society, you are pretty much guaranteed a top grade.
Why? Because you will automatically write about Priestley’s ideas in a convincing and sophisticated way.
Literature is just knowing stuff, and writing fast.
Thanks for reading Mr Salles Teaches English! This post is public so feel free to share it with someone else who wants top grades.
Let’s Look at a Full Mark Answer
This is what the essay is going to show you.
It comes from my not-yet-published guide to essay writing on An Inspector Calls.
Examiner Comments
The answer begins with a very good thesis statement
And has a range of ideas about the question
This acts as a plan for the essay
The student continually refers to Priestley’s purpose
And this helps them explore his ideas and therefore the themes of the play
Priestley’s ideas are explained using very well chosen quotes and references to events in the play
Because it is a long essay it is ‘detailed’
And because it always focuses on Priestley’s ideas, it is always an ‘exploration’
It answers the full task, especially as it considers the ending of the play.

As you know, I love Tilf.io. If you would find this feedback useful, check it out:
Paragraphs Feedback
The introduction effectively sets up the essay by introducing Eva Smith as a victim of social inequality and mentioning the socialist perspective. The use of the Inspector as a proxy is a good observation, and the analysis of Birling's character is insightful.
The second paragraph continues to explore the theme of inequality through Sheila's character. The analysis of Sheila's reaction to Eva's suicide and her role in the social hierarchy is well-developed. The use of textual references is apt and supports the interpretation.
The third paragraph discusses Gerald's exploitation of Eva and his disrespectful treatment of her. The analysis of Gerald's character and his role in the social inequality is clear and supported by textual evidence. The use of subject terminology is effective.
The fourth paragraph examines Eric's actions and their consequences. The analysis of Eric's character and his role in the exploitation of Eva is thoughtful. The connection to the class system and the focus on his pleasure are well-explained.
The fifth paragraph discusses Mrs. Birling's actions and her role in the social inequality. The analysis of her character and her abuse of power is clear. The connection to Sheila and the cyclical nature of the play are well-observed.
The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points of the essay and reinforces the theme of social inequality. The mention of the cyclical ending and the Birlings' refusal to change is a strong closing argument.
What Went Well
The essay provides a thoughtful and developed response to the task, with clear and effective use of textual references. The analysis of the characters and their roles in the theme of inequality is well-explained and supported by relevant subject terminology. The essay also demonstrates a clear understanding of the contextual factors and their impact on the characters' actions.
Even Better If
The essay could be improved by providing a more detailed examination of the effects of the writer's methods and exploring alternative interpretations or deeper meanings. Additionally, a more structured argument with clearer transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence of the essay.
Overall Feedback
This is a thoughtful and developed essay that provides a clear and effective analysis of the theme of inequality in 'An Inspector Calls.' The use of textual references and subject terminology is apt, and the essay demonstrates a clear understanding of the characters and their roles in the social hierarchy. With some improvements in the examination of the writer's methods and the structure of the argument, this essay could reach the highest level.

Thesis Statement Yes
Conclusion Yes
An incredibly short thesis statement, which still has 3 parts. That’s the way to do it.
A conclusion which deals with the end of the play, and includes a quote, and links to the writer’s purpose. These are my 3 ingredients for a perfect conclusion to every essay on any text (apart from the poetry comparison – don’t even get me started). Awesome.
No paragraph structure is needed for 30/30. Rejoice. If only English teachers knew this.
This is our first ‘oh my God, this is a brilliant student’ moment. I respect that. But it is important to know that any student with above average intelligence and hard work can get grade 9.
We know this is a super smart student because they have written loads, 946 words, and I have only had to reduce it by 17%. This is why the student has scored 100%.
But, they aren’t doing something that other students can’t do:
Explain as much as you can
Learn enough quotes to get 13-15 into an essay.
Write a 3 part thesis statement
Write a 3 part conclusion (steal this one if you like, it will fit every question!)
Include the words socialist/ism, society, patriarchal, capitalism/ist
You can do every one of those, in advance, in your revision, before you ever get into the exam hall.
What is an Explanation?
An explanation is anything which could follow ‘this suggests’. Let’s look at the fist 2 in the essay after the thesis statement.
So, ‘the Inspector appears omniscient’ could read ‘this suggests the Inspector is omniscient’.
Or ‘This reminds us that they are similar’ could read ‘this suggests they are similar’.

Response 27: 2022 Theme Question
Priestley portrays Eva Smith as a victim of social inequality. He puts forward a socialist perspective, which reveals a chain of exploitation leading to her tragic death.
He USES the Inspector as his proxy . We are aware of this because the Inspector appears omniscient, appearing to know what each character will reveal, as he makes “one line of enquiry at a time” .
Birling is portrayed as a “hard headed practical man of business” . He confesses to his family “I talk too much” , and then later confesses to sacking Eva because “she had too much to say” . This reminds us that they are similar. Another similarity is how they have both tried to improve their social status.
We sympathise with her because we can see Birling is unjustified in sacking her, especially as he picks on a characteristic which he shares with her . We also feels she was justified in asking for higher pay, yet Birling is able to abuse his power because society is unequal. Priestley SHOWS that the demands made by the men in the play are far worse than Eva’s.
