External Sites for International Business Research

General suggestions for finding international business information.

  • Be aware that while English is widely used in international commerce, you may need to deliberately seek sites and information in translation if you don't speak the language in which the information you need is written; otherwise, explore the library's collection of language dictionaries for assistance. Also: be aware that there may be spelling variations for names and technical terms, depending on language, that will alter the effectiveness of your search terms.
  • Always make sure you know the currency in which a company's financials are reported. Don't assume USD.
  • Be aware that other countries may have local industrial classification systems and regulations that require your attention.
  • Global companies often have country-specific versions of their corporate sites (like McDonalds Japan -- http://www.mcdonalds.co.jp/ ) which can provide useful information about the company's operations in that country.

OER for International Business

  • International Business by Mason A. Carpenter and Sanjyot P Dunung ISBN: 9781453312995 Publication Date: 2011 Carpenter and Dunung's International Business: The Opportunities and Challenges of a Flat World provides exploration into building, leading, and thriving in global organizations in an increasingly flat world. The authors define ”Flat world“ as one whereservice industries that dwarf manufacturing industries in terms of scale and scope,an Internet that pervades life and work, andnetworks define modern businesses, whether service or manufacturing. Carpenter and Dunung's text is designed to speak to technologically-savvy students who see national borders as bridges and not barriers.
  • International Relations by Stephen McGlinchey ISBN: 9781910814185 Publication Date: 2016 This book is designed to be a ‘Day 0' introduction to International Relations. As a beginner's guide, it has been structured to condense the most important information into the smallest space and present that information in the most accessible way. The chapters offer a broad sweep of the basic components of International Relations and the key contemporaryissues that concern the discipline. The narrative arc forms a complete circle, taking readers from no knowledge to competency. The journey starts by examining how the international system was formed and ends by reflecting that International Relations is always adapting to events and is therefore a never-ending journey of discovery. Unlike typical textbooks, there are no boxes, charts, pictures or exercises. The philosophy underpinning this book is that these things can be a distraction. This book, like others in the E-IR Foundations series, is designed to capture attention with an engaging narrative. The chapters are short, with simple paragraphs and clear sentences placing the reader inside crucial issues and debates so they can understand how things work, and where they fit in the world around them.

Cover Art

  • International Development by Seth Appiah-Opoku ISBN: 9789535131038 Publication Date: 2017 This book brings together leading researchers in the field of international development to examine issues relating to food security, health, rural development, human development, and institutional strengthening in developing countries. Based on empirical research, the book discusses a variety of topics including nutrition-sensitive agricultural development in South Africa, household food security in Tanzania, medical research in Egypt, child mortality in Christian and Islamic countries, spot improvement of rural roads in Asia and Africa, resilience in natural disaster, the relationship between foreign aid and human development in Africa, and finally developing competencies for rural development project management through the creation of local action groups in Argentina. The book is insightful and serves as an important reference material on international development.
  • International Trade: On the Brink of Trade by Anita Macek ISBN: 9789535129110 Publication Date: 2017 Based on previous observations, there is no doubt that trade enhanced economic growth. This is especially valid in regard to international trade as it can help or hinder entire regions, thus adding to the issue of international security. In this book, we tried to collect texts that would not repeat known facts on international trade but would rather discuss special issues. Furthermore, we also wanted to bring regional perspectives. Therefore, this book is organized into two sections: "Selected Perspectives on International Trade" and "Regional Specific Issues of International Trade".
  • Trade and Global Market by Vito Bobek ISBN: 9781789238433 Publication Date: 2018 International capital flows have become significantly important since the increasing trend in globalization of the early 1990s. The diversified global market has become one single market, the investment sector has strengthened itself and countries have started to allow investment inflows for economic growth. Empirical studies have revealed that political instability, political regimes and the quality of existing institutions, in addition to the transition procedure of a nation itself, have a deterministic effect on the linkage of economic growth and corruption. Additionally, exchange rate volatility can determine the amount of exchange rate risk that firms can be opposed to; therefore, exchange rate volatility is a crucial issue that should be monitored by central banks to prevent contagion of negative microeconomic developments to macroeconomic activity and stability. The significant transformation of banking markets raises many questions regarding the motives of financial organisations to finance SMEs, for example what are the factors that have an impact on these organisations' choice and market strategies?
  • TED: The Hidden Force in Global Economics: Sending Money Home In 2013, international migrants sent $413 billion home to families and friends — three times more than the total of global foreign aid (about $135 billion). This money, known as remittances, makes a significant difference in the lives of those receiving it and plays a major role in the economies of many countries. Economist Dilip Ratha describes the promise of these “dollars wrapped with love” and analyzes how they are stifled by practical and regulatory obstacles.
  • CrashCourse: Globalization I In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get into some of the less-positive side effects of globalization.
  • CrashCourse: Globalization II In which John asks whether globalization is a net positive for humanity. While the new global economy has created a lot of wealth, and lifted a lot of people out of poverty, it also has some effects that aren't so hot. Wealth disparity, rising divorce rates, environmental damage, and new paths for the spread of disease. So does all this outweigh the economic benefits, the innovation, and the relative peace that come with interconnected economies? As usual, the answer is not simple. In this case, we're living in the middle of the events we're discussing, so it's hard to know how it's going to turn out.
  • ECON307: International Trade This Saylor Academy Course will provide the student with an introductory foundation to international trade.
  • Lumen Learning: SUNY International Business An OER course created by SUNY containing readings, assignments, discussions, videos, about international business topics.
