In the Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision program, you will be trained to apply knowledge about principles of counseling, education and supervision to work more effectively with specific populations. To that end, our faculty teach you to select, implement, and supervise educational methodologies that best suit the needs of these populations in a range of settings:

• Private practice

This online Counseling Education and Supervision Ph.D. program is intended for practitioners who are licensed professional counselors (or are otherwise eligible for professional licensure). With extensive practicum and internship opportunities, developing professionals will emerge from this program with the expertise to pursue a career in any of the above settings.

The Chicago School’s Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision online program will give primary consideration to applicants with a master’s degree in counseling from a CACREP-accredited institution who are licensed professional counselors (LCPC, LPC or license-eligible), or other state equivalent license-eligible for professional licensure. Those not possessing a counseling degree from a CACREP-accredited institution or not currently eligible for licensure will be evaluated on a case by case basis. It is preferred that applicants have one to two years of counseling experience prior to admission. Generally, a graduate GPA of a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required for admission. Applicants will be judged on their overall ability to do graduate work.

To be admitted into the Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision program, applicants must demonstrate successful completion of the following master’s level core courses:

• Counseling theory
• Human growth and development
• Counseling/helping skills
• Legal, ethical, and professional issues in counseling
• Career counseling
• Group counseling, group work, group dynamics
• Multicultural counseling
• Research and evaluation
• Assessment, appraisal, and diagnosis

Fieldwork Opportunities

The Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision program requires 100 hours of practicum. Students are responsible for finding their own practicum sites, which must be approved by the Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision faculty and Department Chair. Students are allowed to earn income during the practicum process.

The program entails 600 hours of Internship as outlined below:

• Mandatory 100 hours of teaching
• Mandatory 100 hours of supervision
• Consultation
• Professional leadership

Students registered in this program incur a one-time $195 Experiential Learning Technology Fee.

Additional Program Components

Students in the online Ph.D. Counselor Education and Supervision Online program attend two, in-person, mandatory residencies. Each residency takes place during four and one-half days at The Chicago School university ground campus. Students must successfully complete in-person residencies as a requirement of their respective academic program. The first on ground residency occurs during the first year of the program. The second residency occurs during the second year of the program. Additionally, courses require mandatory weekly synchronous components and asynchronous modules, assignments, and assessments with instructors. The two residency courses prepare students for the programmatic fieldwork courses.

Dissertation

As a doctoral student, you will write a doctoral dissertation in the final year of your program of study, concurrent with your internship experiences. The dissertation utilizes measurement, data collection, and research design methods to address a problem of your choosing. The dissertation makes an original contribution to the field of counseling education or supervision and is structured as a formal product using the American Psychological Association (APA) format. The literature review provides a complete statement of all issues relevant to the topic. You may present dissertation data at conferences (e.g., the annual Association for Behavior Analysis International convention) and summarize dissertation data for publication in a scholarly journal.

Sample Courses

Advanced Counseling Theories

This course will provide an examination of major counseling theories, including historical foundations and contemporary/emerging theories. Emphasis is included on theory construction and development, comparative analysis of theories, and issues related to application of theory in counseling practice. Includes advanced study of career development theories.

Advanced Group Counseling

This course provides students with advanced training and experience in group development, group process, theories, methods and skills of group leadership, supervision of group work, and contemporary trends in group work. Students will examine current research and evaluation in group counseling/psychotherapy, as well as ethical, legal, and professional issues affecting the practice of group counseling.

Online Only: This course includes a required in-person residency, which is held during course.

Telebehavioral Approaches in Counseling and Supervision

This doctoral level course will explore the delivery of counseling and supervision via technology-assisted media. Students will apply ethical and legal decision-making models to explore potential implications of a telebehavioral health modality. Students will examine intake and assessment considerations, evidence-based delivery methods, theory, termination, risk management, and the business of counseling and supervision via technology-assisted media. At the end of the course, students will know how to engage ethically and legally in counseling and supervision via technology-assisted media and how to stay current on this rapidly emerging modality.

Counseling - Ph.D.

The hybrid online Counseling Ph.D. prepares students to work as advanced practitioners, counselor educators, and supervisors in clinical and academic settings. As a CACREP accredited program, the Counseling Ph.D. prepares graduates to be leaders and advocates for change in the professional counseling field. The Counseling Ph.D. degree emphasizes student contributions to counselor education through research while understanding and addressing the needs of today's communities. Students can work full-time during the program in order to continue to provide meaningful professional counseling services to the communities in which they live and work. Face-to-face classes occur only twice each quarter on a Friday through Saturday in the OSU Portland Center. Approximately 12 students are admitted each year into a cohort.

The OSU Ph.D. in Counseling degree is part-time, and financial support such as loans and grants are more limited than for full-time programs. There are no teaching or research assistantships since these require full-time enrollment.

• Attend a high quality online program with a long history of delivering remote education, having offered graduate courses via Extended Campus since 1944 and full graduate degrees via Extended Campus since 1976. The Oregon State University counseling programs are the second oldest in the world, with counseling classes first offered in 1917. The Counseling program at Oregon State University was one of the very first CACREP-accredited programs.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

What to expect, how long does it take to complete the program.

Coursework is typically completed after two full years of part-time attendance. The remaining 7 credits of internship (630 hours) and 36 credits of dissertation take anywhere from 1 to 3 additional years. The median completion time is 48 months.

What are the admission requirements?

The minimum requirements for the Doctoral degree are a Master of Counseling or closely related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Academic background, personal and emotional suitability, volunteer or paid experience in the helping professions, and the educational and professional goals of each candidate are evaluated before admission is granted. Screening includes, but is not limited to, three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a current or recent clinical supervisor, and a writing sample. A personal interview is required for those applicants who meet the initial application criteria.

Is the GRE required?

We do not require the GRE for admission into our program. We believe that there are many other criteria that will reflect if a candidate is a fit for the program including past academic work, professional and volunteer experience.

When does the program begin?

A new cohort enters the Doctoral degree program starts every summer quarter. 

Can international students apply?

Note: International students are not eligible to apply. Due to the hybrid nature of this program (in person and online), international students are unable to obtain an appropriate educational visa. For more information contact  International Admissions .

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree that reveals evidence of fulfilling CACREP entry-level standards (our current prerequisite courses) with a minimum of 3.25 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• A  Ph.D. graduate status record  form.
• Two recommendations  from professionals familiar with the applicant’s work and character.
• A 300-word letter of intent.
• Professional Vita – Must indicate counseling licensure or a minimum of one year of clinical experience in the counseling field with a commitment to obtain counseling licensure prior to graduation from the program.
• Case Vignette: An APA-formatted research paper of 3-5 pages length (not including title page, abstract, and references). The university provides applicants with the paper’s topic. Applicants will choose between a  Case Vignette for School Counseling Applicants  or  Case Vignette for Clinical Counseling Applicants .
• Selected applicants may be required to participate in a personal interview with core Ph.D. program faculty.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
• Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Second, set yourself up for success. These programs are a major, major commitment. If you’re like me and completed your doctorate while working and raising a family, your time will be stretched very thin. Plan accordingly. For some of us, that means waiting for the timing to be right (whether that’s kids growing a little older or saving money first); for others, that means identifying what you need to keep in your life because it makes you feel like a balanced person, and what can wait for your degree to be complete before you pick it up again. These programs will require sacrifice on our part—allow yourself to be the one who chooses what the sacrifice will look like because you’ve planned for it.

Types of Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

When it comes to doctoral degrees, there are several programs in counseling. Aspiring psychologists searching for PhD programs should know there are two accrediting organizations. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits master’s and doctoral degrees in counseling, and the American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral residency programs in psychology. 

To choose the best program, applicants are advised to consider their future career goals and interests. In general, PhD programs in counseling prepare graduates to focus on patient adjustment issues such as anxiety, depression, couples counseling, behavior disorders, and substance abuse. By comparison, PhD programs in psychology may also see patients or specialize in clinical research and administer psychological assessments measuring intelligence, emotional relation, or neurological capabilities.  

Here are two lists of PhD programs in counseling and psychology included in CACREP- and APA-accredited programs.

CACREP-accredited PhD Programs in Counseling

• EdD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is a practical degree program focusing on applying solutions to mental health problems from an administrative or teaching role; a clinical internship may not be required.
• PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is designed for those who want to work in theoretical, clinical, teaching, and leadership roles; a clinical internship is typically required.

It is worth noting that as of 2013, new university teaching faculty members in CACREP-accredited programs must have a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program to be eligible for employment. Additionally, licensure requirements vary by position and state requirements, and earning a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program prepares candidates for the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) to become a licensed counselor. 

APA-accredited PhD Programs in Psychology

• PhD in Counseling Psychology : This is a foundational degree that leads to various positions seeing patients in clinical practices, research, teaching, and supervisory roles in private or public healthcare facilities.
• PhD in Psychology : This is a general degree program that can be broad or specific in its focus and includes clinical and research components; a one-year internship may be required.
• PhD in School Psychology : This school counseling degree program prepares future school psychologists to work with youth and behavioral issues that interfere with learning and socialization.
• PsyD in Counseling Psychology : Students in PsyD programs focus on client interaction, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment and learn practical applications of research-based psychology practices; a one-year internship may be required.

Online Counseling and Psychology Doctoral Program Accreditation

As mentioned above, master’s and doctoral counseling degree programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). There are more than 900 CACREP-accredited programs in the United States. Programs demonstrate their academic rigor through a two-part process of self and peer assessment and must prove that their mission, curriculum, and teaching meet high standards of excellence. 

In addition, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizes CACREP as an accrediting body, and nine of the 86 CACREP-accredited PhD programs in counseling are offered through online programs. 

As for psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA) currently does not accredit any online doctoral programs. Therefore, the APA urges students wishing to pursue an online doctoral degree in psychology to seek online PhD programs in psychology that hold regional or national accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education or an accrediting body approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). 

Typical Admissions Requirements for Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

Each doctoral program has its own unique admissions requirements. Here are some standard admissions requirements for online doctoral degree programs in counseling and psychology: 

• A master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program or a master’s degree from an accredited psychology program 
• Criminal background check
• Current license or be eligible to apply for licensure in the state of residence 
• GPA of 3.0 or higher from master’s degree program
• GRE scores 
• Interview with an admissions committee
• Letters of reference
• Official transcripts for undergraduate and graduate coursework
• Previous clinical experience in counseling or psychology 
• Statement of career or research goals

Supervised Clinical Hour Requirements – Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

Counseling programs accredited by CACREP include a supervised clinical hours component to prepare students to work one-on-one with patients. CACREP requires students to complete skill development preparation before being eligible for supervised clinical experience. 

A minimum of 700 hours of supervised experience is required, and hours are divided into two categories: practicum and internship. Practicum hours must total 100, and at least 40 of those hours must be in direct service with clients. 

As for internship hours, the minimum requirement is 600 hours, of which students must spend 240 in direct service with clients. CACREP defines direct service hours as ”the supervised use of counseling, consultation, or related professional skills with actual clients (can be individuals, couples, families, or groups) to foster social, cognitive, behavioral, and affective change.” The organization does not count tasks in administration and observation as direct service hours.

As for APA-accredited doctoral programs in psychology, students are encouraged to keep well-documented records of their supervised clinical hours. Depending on the state where licensure is sought, a psychologist must earn 1,500 to 6,000 supervised clinical hours. 

Licensure requirements vary by state, and students are advised to carefully research the number of supervised hours required for each state listed on the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) website.

Adams State University

Adams State University offers an online PhD in counselor education and supervision program. Accredited by CACREP in 2017, this program requires four one-week summer residencies. This program’s mission is to position counseling professionals in a diverse range of counseling positions and advance the knowledge base through scholarly inquiry. 

With a PhD in this field, graduates can find work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers in academic settings. Students must write a dissertation or a comparable research project related to counseling or counselor education and supervision to complete the doctoral program.

Amridge University (Hybrid) 

Located in Montgomery, Alabama, Amridge University offers a hybrid PhD program in professional counseling. This program isn’t designed to meet state counseling licensure requirements but is open for licensed counselors and non-licensed counselors to pursue. 

This doctoral program is designed for pastors, licensed counselors, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers who want to incorporate biblical counseling skills into their work. Graduates from this program complete a dissertation and benefit from a practice-focused degree program solving real-world problems with advanced research.

Oregon State University (Hybrid) 

Located in Corvallis, Oregon, the College of Education at Oregon State University offers a hybrid PhD program in counseling. The in-person classes take place on weekends twice each quarter in Portland, Oregon, making the courses accessible for students traveling from outside the area to attend these courses.

Walden University offers an online PhD in psychology with a non-clinical/non-licensure focus. This program aims to prepare students for teaching, research, and consulting positions. Applicants to this program can transfer up to 55 credits. 

In addition, students can choose from six specializations to tailor their studies to future careers in educational psychology, health psychology, research in psychology, social psychology, teaching in psychology, or design a unique specialization.

To apply, students must have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in a related field from an accredited school and meet general admission requirements. Once admitted, students can pursue a fast-track option, increasing their course load from two to three credits per term so long as they maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students in this program are supported with online resources, faculty, and academic coaching services.

Become a Community Mental Health Counselor

After a community is impacted by trauma such as a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or war, a community mental health counselor steps in to help communities process their losses. 

Through speaking with individuals and groups after a disaster, community mental health counselors, also known as crisis counselors , serve as outreach personnel in community and civic organizations. In addition, a community mental health counselor can be a pivotal part of the reunification and future development of neighborhoods, families, and organizations by providing mental and emotional support to community members after a community disaster. 

Become a Forensic Psychologist

When a crime is committed, much attention is given to the perpetrator. The role of a forensic psychologist is to determine the motive of a specific or often-occurring crime. 

Forensic psychologists perform interdisciplinary work that spans criminal justice, law, and psychology. For example, forensic psychologists can be pivotal in crime prevention by analyzing criminal risk factors and serving in court-appointed rehabilitation roles for convicted criminals by questioning alleged criminals, interviewing crime-scene witnesses, and investigating actual crime scenes. 

Become a Military, Army, or Veteran Counselor

Returning military veterans often find reentry to civilian life difficult for various reasons. Veterans’ counselors help military vets mentally process their experiences, and services are available to veterans who have been honorably or generally discharged. 

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI 2020) estimates that one in four active-duty members experiences signs of mental illness, with the top three afflictions being post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Veterans’ counselors can help military veterans develop coping skills at one of the 170 veteran affairs (VA) medical centers and outpatient clinics located throughout the United States.

NYU Steinhardt’s online master of arts in School Counseling program prepares aspiring  pre-K–12 school counselors  to pursue certification and employment in  public and private schools nationwide . We teach school counseling practice and research techniques through the lens of  equity and social justice  so you can help students from diverse backgrounds thrive academically, professionally, socially, and personally.

The program is  taught by NYU faculty  dedicated to developing you into an effective school counselor. You will choose one of two concentrations: school counseling or  bilingual school counseling , which teaches you to address common challenges experienced by students for whom English is a second language.

What Can I Do with an Online Master’s in School Counseling?

Graduates of the online master’s in school counseling program are prepared to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators within pre-K–12 schools. Your work may include providing individual and group counseling support, developing curricula, and working with parents, teachers, and school administration to ensure students’ academic success and healthy socioemotional development.

As an elementary school counselor , you will create a nurturing environment in which children develop the knowledge, habits, and emotional skills to succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond.

As a middle school counselor , you will provide vital academic and emotional support to younger adolescents as they undergo various physical changes and begin to define their adult identities.

As a high school counselor , you will guide older adolescents toward academic and professional success during one of the most exciting and daunting times in their lives: preparing for college and career.

Bilingual School Counseling Concentration

As a student in the school counseling program, you will have the option to specialize in bilingual school counseling by taking a specific course sequence which adds three credits to your plan of study. Students in this concentration will learn to develop and apply appropriate solutions to common challenges experienced by pre-K–12 students for whom English is a second language. The specialization’s curriculum focuses on bilingual and multicultural theory and on identifying the characteristics of well-adjusted children who are culturally and linguistically diverse.

Master of Arts in School Counseling with Advanced Certificate (Dual Degree)

Our online program will prepare you to meet the State of New York’s requirements for graduate course work for Initial and Professional Certification. The 60 required credit hours can be completed through our online Dual Degree Master’s program (48-51 credits) and an Advanced Certificate in School Counseling (additional 12 credits) .

The online master of arts in School Counseling program is comprised of 48-51 credits, which is required for Initial Certification. For Professional Certification in the State of New York, students are required to complete an additional 12 credits to continue practicing. Students have the option to complete these additional 12 credits while simultaneously earning their MA degree. Students are not required to complete their additional 12 credits at the institution granting their MA degree.

New York University Steinhart’s Counseling@NYU online program offers a master of arts in School Counseling and Bilingual School Counseling, Grades pre-K – 12. New York University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Board (MPCAC) for the period of January 2015 to January 2025. Learn more about MPCAC accreditation.

Certification

New York University’s master’s of arts in School Counseling and Bilingual School Counseling, grades pre-K–12 prepares students to work as a school counselor in elementary, middle, and high schools, and as a child advocate in community-based organizations. The online master’s in School Counseling program leads to eligibility to be recommended for New York State Initial Certification as a school counselor for grades pre-K–12. The dual master of arts in School Counseling with Advanced Certificate in School Counseling program includes completion of the course work necessary to advance your career in New York State. The designed outcome of the dual program is to prepare you to meet New York State educational requirements for Initial and Professional Certification as a school counselor. 

Students may also be eligible for certification in other states outside of New York, though these requirements may vary from state to state. We encourage each student to research and understand the specific requirements for certification for their state of residence. Curriculum & Courses

The PhD in Education: Counselor Education and Supervision at the UGA Gwinnett Campus is a part-time PhD program geared toward school counselors and community and mental health counselors.

As a participant, you will have the chance to enhance your skills and content knowledge as well as gain opportunities for professional advancement.

The doctoral program focuses on:

• Training you to become a “scholar-advocate-practitioner” in counseling
• Preparing you to address issues of social justice in P-12 and higher education settings
• Helping you to become more effective in advocacy and implementing systemic change

During your first year of coursework, the department will assign you an individual faculty advisor who complements your research and professional interests. During the second summer, you will select major professors and committee members to direct your program of study and your dissertation.

Your coursework may include:

• Supervised counselor education and supervision practice, such as teaching and clinical experiences
• Practicum and internship experiences tailored to your interests
• A selection of courses that allows further specialization

Through your coursework, practicum, internship, and research experiences, you will work closely with nationally and internationally renowned faculty mentors. Their varied academic interests will provide perspective in your dissertation research.

The program at the UGA Gwinnett Campus offers a cohort model. As you progress in the PhD, you will have the opportunity to develop relationships with other students of diverse academic and professional backgrounds.

The School Counseling, Master of Education (M.Ed.) program prepares you to be a leader, advocate, and systemic change agent in K-12 urban educational settings. You will gain awareness, knowledge and skills to work with diverse student populations. The program focuses on access, equity and social justice in delivering counseling services. You will develop competencies to be a leader in working to close opportunity gaps in urban schools.

• Real-World Experience : Complete one 100-hour practicum and two 300-hour internships in local urban school districts.
• Cohort Model: Learn in a supportive cohort environment with a 4:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Students enter the program and take the same course sequence together. 
• Accreditation : Accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
• ASCA National Model : A framework that guides school counselors in the development of school counseling programs involving data-informed decision making, delivered to students systemically, are developmentally appropriate, close achievement and opportunity gaps and result in improved student achievement, attendance and discipline.
• Promote academic, college and career, and personal/social growth in students using the ASCA National Model as a framework for success.

The admissions process includes an interview stage. Interview Day occurs on the second Friday in February. Invitations for interviews are sent out two weeks prior to the interview stage.
