The promotional content of Srikanth Addala’s new film Peddha Kapu has surprised everyone. The film stars debutant Virat Karrna in the lead role and is bankrolled by Akhanda producer Miryala Ravinder Reddy. Let’s see how the film is.

Set in the 1980s, the film is about the journey of a common man, Peddha Kapu (Virat Karrna), who rises against all odds. The movie also deals with oppression and power politics. Two gangs, headed by Satya Rangaiah (Rao Ramesh) and Bhaiyanna (Naren), are always at loggerheads striving for power. It is also the time Sr. NTR establishes the Telugu Desam Party. How Peddha Kapu emerges as a leader amidst all the gruesome bloodshed is what the film is about.

Plus Points:

The story of the film is very interesting, and Srikanth Addala penned some powerful characters. Be it Virat Karrna, Anasuya, Rao Ramesh, Naren, Brigada Saga, and Pragathi Srivasthava, everyone has got their own importance in the film. Though it is his debut film, Virat delivered a fine performance. His efforts are visible in the action sequences, which are very challenging.

The second half of the film has decent drama, and this is where all the key details and twists are revealed. These scenes are well-written and executed. Rao Ramesh doesn’t have many dialogues, but the actor impresses big time with his mannerisms and expressions. Naren is powerful in his role, and so is Brigada Saga.

Amidst all the gruesome bloodshed, there is a subtle message which is conveyed well through Anasuya’s character. The actress has once again delivered a stellar performance, and she is turning out to be the go-to actress for such powerful roles. Chota K. Naidu’s cinematography is the best in recent times. The visuals are spell bounding, and Micky J. Meyer’s background score lifts the spirits.

Minus Points:

The screenplay style of Peddha Kapu 1 is totally different from regular films. The director establishes the narrative slowly, giving us more intricate details about what the characters are all about. The entire first half is used for character establishments, which isn’t usual in commercial cinema space. The director is very clear in his intentions, and he wanted to narrate the film in a slow manner without rushing things, and audiences who are habituated to watching fast-paced films may not like this narration format.

One can see the shades of films like Rangasthalam, Rakthachatritha, and Gangs Of Wasseypur. The extreme usage of violence and profanity is in accordance with the film’s theme, but it might be difficult for a few sections of the audience to watch those scenes.

The first half of the film is confusing at times. Though a few dialogues are written well, most of them are repetitive and loud. A few sequences could have been a lot better without dialogues, too, but the usage of repetitive words caused slight irritation.

Technical Aspects:

The background score by Mickey J. Meyer is excellent, while the songs are decent. Chota K. Naidu’s cinematography is nothing short of brilliance, and he is one of the biggest assets of the film. The production values are superb, and the rural atmosphere is well-created. The art department has done a great job in showcasing the proceedings during the 80’s in a good manner. The editing is in tandem with the director’s vision.

Coming to the director, Srikanth Addala, he narrated the film in the way he wished to, and this may not go well with everyone. While we can see the shades of other films, the attempt is still appreciable. The love track and the dialogue part could have been handled better.

On the whole, Peddha Kapu 1 is a bold film that appeals to a section of the audience. The film talks about power politics and oppression in a detailed manner. Though it is his debut film, Virat Karrna did extremely well, and he will go places if he chooses good scripts. He is ably supported by other artists. As discussed earlier, the director narrated the film in a slow manner, which may not be liked by everyone, and also, the movie has got extreme amount of violence. Those who are okay with slow-paced drama can give it a shot.

శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల గురించి ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు. ఒక కొత్త బంగారు లోకం సినిమా, ఒక సీతమ్మ వాకిట్లో సిరిమల్లె చెట్టు, ఒక ముకుంద.. ఇలా చాలా సినిమాలు ఆయనకు బాగా పేరు తెచ్చిపెట్టాయి. బ్రహ్మోత్సవం లాంటి ప్లాఫ్ సినిమా ఆయన్ను తీవ్ర నిరాశకు గురి చేసింది. ఇటీవల నారప్పతో మళ్లీ లైన్ లోకి వచ్చాడు శ్రీకాంత్. తాజాగా పెదకాపు సినిమాతో ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చాడు. అంతా బాగానే ఉంది కానీ.. ఈసారి శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల కొత్త హీరోను తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు పరిచయం చేశారు. పాత హీరోలను పక్కన పెట్టి విరాట్ కర్ణ అనే కొత్త యువకుడిని తెలుగు తెరకు పరిచయం చేశారు. అలాగే.. ఈ సినిమాలో విలన్ గానూ నటించాడు శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల. మరి ఈ యాక్షన్, డ్రామా ఎలా ఉందో తెలియాలంటే సినిమా కథలోకి వెళ్లాల్సిందే.

నిజానికి ఈ సినిమా కథ ఇప్పటిది కాదు. 1980 తరం నాటిది. అప్పట్లో ఒక సామాన్యుడి కథ. పలు సవాళ్లకు ఒక సాధారణ వ్యక్తి ఎదుర్కొని ఎలా పోరాడాడు.. ఎలా బలవంతుడిగా మారాడు.. ఎలా ఎదిగాడు అన్నదే పెదకాపు 1 కథ. ఎన్టీఆర్ టీడీపీ పార్టీ పెట్టినప్పుడు చాలామంది ఆయన్ను ఆదర్శంగా తీసుకొని రాజకీయాల్లోకి వచ్చారు. అప్పుడు అలాంటి వాళ్లకు చాలా సవాళ్లు ఎదురయ్యాయి. ఆ సమయంలో నిజంగా కొందరు వ్యక్తులకు ఎదురైన సవాళ్లకు కొంత కథ జోడించారు. అంటే ఒకరకంగా చెప్పాలంటే ఇది నిజమైన కథ అనే చెప్పుకోవాలి. ఈ కథ పెద్దది కావడంతో రెండు పార్టులుగా రానుంది.

శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల మూవీ అంటేనే ఆ కథ కొంచెం కొత్తగా, మనకు కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా ఉంటుంది. కొత్త బంగారులోకం సినిమాను కొత్త హీరోతో తీశారు. ముకుందను కూడా కొత్త హీరోతో తీశారు. అలాగే.. ఇప్పుడు పెదకాపు 1 సినిమా కూడా కొత్త హీరో కావడంతో తనకు కావాల్సినంత ఫ్రీడమ్ దొరికేసింది. అందుకే సినిమాను తనకు నచ్చినట్టుగా తీశారు. హీరోగా నటించిన విరాట్ కర్ణ స్క్రీన్ ప్రజెన్స్ బాగుంది. అలాగే.. విలన్ గా శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల ఇరగదీశారు. ఇక.. కీలక పాత్రల్లో నటించిన రావు రమేశ్, నాగబాబు, అనసూయ వీళ్లంతా తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు బాగానే నటించారు.

కు టుంబ క‌థ‌లు, ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌లపై ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల సంత‌కం ప్ర‌త్యేకమైన‌ది. తెలుగుద‌నం ఉట్టిప‌డే పాత్ర‌ల్ని, నేప‌థ్యాన్ని అందంగా తెర‌పై ఆవిష్కరిస్తుంటారాయ‌న‌. ఇప్ప‌టికీ అదే పంథాని కొన‌సాగిస్తున్నారు. అయితే ‘నార‌ప్ప‌’తో కుటుంబ క‌థ‌ల నుంచి కాస్త కొత్త దారిని ఎంచుకున్న‌ట్టు అనిపించింది. ఆ కొత్త‌దారిలోనే  ప్ర‌యాణం చేస్తూ ‘పెద‌కాపు-1’ తీశారు. ఈ సినిమాతో విరాట్ క‌ర్ణ క‌థానాయ‌కుడిగా ప‌రిచ‌యం అయ్యారు. మ‌రి ఈ సినిమాతో శ్రీకాంత్ అడ్డాల ఎలాంటి ప్ర‌భావం చూపించారు?కొత్త హీరో విరాట్ క‌ర్ణ సామాన్యుడిలా ఎలా ఒదిగిపోయారు?

క‌థేంటంటే: 1982లో రామారావు పార్టీ ప్ర‌క‌టించిన సంద‌ర్భం నాటి క‌థ ఇది. అన్నానికి అల‌వాటు ప‌డిన‌ట్టుగా అధికారానికి అల‌వాటు ప‌డిన ఇద్ద‌రు వ్య‌క్తులు బ‌య‌న్న (న‌రేన్‌) స‌త్య రంగ‌య్య (రావు ర‌మేశ్‌) లంక గ్రామాల్లో  సామాన్యుల జీవితాల‌తో చెల‌గాటమాడుతుంటారు. ఈ క్ర‌మంలోనే కొత్త పార్టీ రావ‌డంతో ఇరు వ‌ర్గాల్లో క‌ల‌వ‌రం మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ఆధిప‌త్యం కోసం ర‌క్త‌పాతం సృష్టిస్తారు. సామాన్యులే బ‌ల‌వుతారు. ఆ ప్ర‌భావం స‌త్య రంగ‌య్య ద‌గ్గ‌ర ప‌నిచేసే పెద‌కాపు (విరాట్‌క‌ర్ణ‌) కుటుంబంపైనా ప‌డుతుంది. త‌న అన్న క‌నిపించ‌కుండా మాయ‌మ‌వుతాడు. ఇంత‌కీ పెద‌కాపు అన్న ఏమ‌య్యాడు? ఆత్మ‌గౌర‌వం కోసం పెద‌కాపు ఏం చేశాడు? రామారావు ఎవ‌రికి టికెట్ ఇచ్చారు? 1960ల్లో ఆ ఊళ్ల‌ల్లో ఏం జ‌రిగింది?అక్క‌మ్మ (అన‌సూయ‌) ఎవ‌రు?(Peddha Kapu-1 Movie Review) త‌దిత‌ర విష‌యాల్ని తెర‌పై చూడాల్సిందే.

ఎలా ఉందంటే: ఆత్మ‌గౌర‌వం కోసం... త‌న‌వాళ్ల‌ కోసం నిల‌బ‌డి పోరాటం చేసిన ఓ సామాన్యుడు నాయ‌కుడిగా మారే ప‌రిణామ క్ర‌మ‌మే ఈ సినిమా. తెర‌పై ప్ర‌ధానంగా పెద‌కాపు సంత‌క‌మే క‌నిపించినా... ఇంకా చాలా పాత్ర‌ల ప్ర‌యాణాన్ని ఆవిష్క‌రించే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. అంద‌రినీ సృష్టించిన ఆ దేవుడు ఒక‌రికి క‌ష్టాలు మ‌రొక‌రికి సుఖాలు ఎందుకు ఇచ్చాడు?చీక‌టి నుంచి వెలుగులోకి, దుఃఖం నుంచి సంతోషంలోకి రావాలనుకుంటే యుద్ధం చేయాల్సిందేనా? త‌దిత‌ర విష‌యాల్ని ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు త‌న‌దైన శైలిలో ఈ క‌థ‌లో చ‌ర్చించాడు. (Peddha Kapu Movie Review) 60వ ద‌శ‌కంతో క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. అప్పుడు అనాథ‌లా దొరికిన పాప ఎవ‌ర‌నే ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తించిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఆ త‌ర్వాత 80ల్లోకి క‌థ‌ని తీసుకొచ్చాడు. పెద‌కాపు అనే పేరు ఎందుకు వ‌చ్చిందో... ఆ పాత్ర ప్ర‌పంచం ఏమిటో ప‌క్కాగా ప‌రిచ‌యం చేయ‌కుండానే నేరుగా ఆత్మ‌గౌర‌వం అంటూ ఊళ్లో జెండా పాత‌డం నుంచి రంగంలోకి దించారు. పాత్ర‌ల్ని, క‌థా ప్ర‌పంచాన్ని స‌గం స‌గం ప‌రిచ‌యం చేసి క‌థ‌ని మొదలు పెట్ట‌డంతో ఆరంభ స‌న్నివేశాలు అయోమయంగా అనిపిస్తాయి. ఎలాంటి క‌నెక్టివిటీ, ఎలాంటి భావోద్వేగాలు లేకుండానే స‌న్నివేశాలు సాగుతూ పోతుంటాయి.

సామాన్యుడి సంత‌కం అని చెప్పిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సామాన్యులు మాట్లాడిన‌ట్టుగా కాకుండా ప్ర‌తి పాత్రతోనూ లోతైన సంభాష‌ణ‌లు చెప్పించాడు. కాసేపు ఆలోచించి అర్థం చేసుకుంటే త‌ప్ప ఆ మాట‌లు బోధ‌ప‌డ‌వు. హీరో పాత్ర కూడా మొద‌ట్నుంచీ హీరోగానే క‌నిపిస్తుంది త‌ప్ప‌, ఓ సామాన్యుడు అన్న‌ట్టుగా ఉండ‌దు. (Peddha Kapu-1 Movie Review) అలా ఈ సినిమా ఆరంభంలోనే గాడిత‌ప్పిన‌ట్టు అనిపించినా... హీరో సోద‌రుడు ఏమ‌య్యాడు? ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్‌లో ఉన్న క‌థేమిటి అనే ప్ర‌శ్న‌లు ప్రేక్ష‌కుడిని ఆస‌క్తిగా, ఓపిక‌గా కూర్చోబెడ‌తాయి. విరామ స‌న్నివేశాలు క‌థ‌కి మ‌లుపునిస్తాయి. ద్వితీయార్ధంతోనే సినిమాలోని అస‌లు క‌థ‌, పాత్ర‌ల ఉద్దేశాలు అర్థమవుతాయి. ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్ సినిమాకి కీల‌కం. ఇందులో క‌థేమీ లేదు. గ్రామ రాజకీయాల నేప‌థ్యంలో వ‌చ్చిన సినిమాల్లోని క‌థే ఇందులోనూ. స‌మాజంలో అస‌మాన‌త‌లు, కుల వ్య‌వ‌స్థల నేప‌థ్యం కార‌ణంగా ‘నార‌ప్ప‌’, ‘రంగ‌స్థ‌లం’, ‘ద‌స‌రా’  త‌దిత‌ర సినిమాల ఛాయ‌లు క‌నిపిస్తాయి. పాత్ర‌లు, అవి న‌డుచుకునే తీరులోనూ స‌హ‌జ‌త్వం క‌నిపించ‌దు. (Peddha Kapu Movie Review) అన‌సూయ పాత్ర‌ని చేర‌దీసిన మ‌హిళ పాత్ర ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఏమ‌వుతుందో అర్థం కాదు. ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌లోనూ బ‌లం లేదు. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఉన్న‌తంగా ఉందికానీ... క‌థ‌ని న‌డిపించ‌డంలోనూ, భావోద్వేగాల విష‌యంలోనూ ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ప‌ట్టు కోల్పోయిన‌ట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. రెండో భాగం కోసం ప్ర‌త్యేక‌మైన ఉత్సుక‌త‌ని రేకెత్తించ‌కుండానే తొలి భాగాన్ని ముగించారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: క‌థానాయ‌కుడు విరాట్ క‌ర్ణకి ఇదే తొలి చిత్రమైనా ఆ పాత్ర‌లో ఒదిగిపోయాడు. న‌ట‌న‌లో ప‌రిణ‌తి ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శించాడు. పోరాట ఘ‌ట్టాలు కూడా బాగా చేశాడు. ఆయ‌న లుక్స్ బాగున్నాయి. సంభాష‌ణ‌లు ఒకొక్క‌సారి ఒక్కో ర‌కంగా చెప్పిన‌ట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. హీరోయిన్ ప్ర‌గతి శ్రీ వాత్స‌వ అందంగా క‌నిపించింది. కానీ, ఆ పాత్ర‌లో బ‌లం లేదు. గౌరీ పాత్రలో బ్రిగిడ స‌హ‌జంగా క‌నిపించింది. అక్కమ్మ పాత్ర‌లో అన‌సూయ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. సినిమాలో కాస్త భావోద్వేగాలు పండాయంటే ఆమె పాత్ర వ‌ల్లే. Peddha Kapu 1 Review: Clumsy And Confusing

Srikanth Addala, best known for family-friendly films such as "Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu," has shifted gears and begun making violent films with "Naarappa." With its stunning trailers, his latest film "Peddha Kapu 1" sparked interest. In this film, he also makes his debut as a villain.

Let us examine its merits and demerits.

Story: The story is set in the 1980s, but it begins many decades earlier. Satya Rangaiah (Rao Ramesh) and Bayyanna (Naren) have ruled over a village in the Godavari region for many years. The political game changes when a new party (the TDP) enters the fray.

Satya Rangaiah is cruel, and he even rapes educated Akkamma (Anasuya) when she tries to field in the elections. Meanwhile, Peddha Kapu (Virrat Karna) and his brother oppose the oppressive system.

When his brother is kidnapped by Bayyanna's disabled son (Srikanth Addala), Peddha Kapu (Virrat Karna) resorts to violence to bring the change.

But how did Peddha Kapu acquire the ability and power to confront Satya Rangaiah and Bayyana? Who is secretly providing him with ideas and moral support?

Artistes’ Performances: The main actors deliver commendable performances in the film. Rao Ramesh is ok as an evil politician but something more is expected from him.

Srikanth Addala as a physically handicapped feudal villain is ok with single expression throughout the film. Anasuya is effective in her brief but important role.

Virat Karrna, a newcomer, can have a future as a hero if he selects simple love stories. He is confident in his acting abilities, but the role is too demanding for a newcomer. Pragati Srivastava, the heroine, is attractive.

Aadukalam Naren is impressive as well. Naga Babu is only there to give "lectures." Eeswari Rao's character is missing a proper graph.

Technical Excellence: Technically, this film receives a background score in sync with the subject. The cinematography is terrific.

Chota K Naidu's inventive use of lighting deserves special mention. He has also captured the Godavari region in a unique way. The production design is outstanding. 

Mickey J Meyer's songs are dull with no haunting tune to carry .

Analysis "Peddha Kapu 1," directed by Srikanth Addala, is set in the 1980s, shortly after NT Rama Rao's Telugu Desam party was founded. The film discusses how politics changed with the arrival of the party, and how some castes attempted to suppress the other castes. However, the film makes no mention of which community oppressed which community. It makes vague references to two dominant castes and another caste that has been denied political power.

On paper, this political story appears to be interesting. Srikanth Addala also wanted to tell this story from the beginning, from the 1960s to the 1980s.  It is undeniable that NTR's TDP brought about a sea change in Andhra Pradesh politics. So, Addala did not hesitate to mention the TDP flag and include NTR's voice in the film. But he didn't dare to say which communities are at odds.

All we hear is the oppressive and ruling communities repeating the same dialogue: "Meeke Antunte Maake Entha Undaliraa."

For much of the first half of the film, you're confused about what's going on in the story. Tanikella Bharani, Rao Ramesh, Hero Virat Karnna, Heroine Pragati, Eeswari Rao, Aadukalam Naren, Srikanth Addala, Naga Babu, and other characters have been introduced by the director one after the other. There is also a lengthy scene of the party's flag being hoisted. It begs the question, "What is this film about?" Fortunately, the film begins to make sense after Anasuya's character is revealed.

The second half of the film sheds more light on the subject, revealing that it is all about a suppressed community rising up and seizing power. The outcome would have been different if this story had been told in a more lucid and effective manner rather than focusing on individual characters. Instead, Srikanth Addala appears to be more concerned with the performances of some actors and individual characters.

Over intelligent dialogues are delivered by characters such as Naga Babu and Srikanth Addala, but they have little impact.

The fundamental flaw is that there is no explanation for why the young hero is named Pedda Kapu, or what good deed he did before he was given that name. What the hero did to impress NT Ramarao enough to come all the way from Hyderabad to this region and announce his name as a leader is not explained.

(spoiler alert) If every trick is performed by a character who was in hiding and who pulls all the strings on behalf of Peddha Kapu, what is so great about this so-called hero? How could you call it common man’s signature (Samanyudi Santhakam?). Should the credit go to the backdoor person who executes the entire game plan?

There is so much confusion and vague in Srikanth Addala’s script and thoughts in this political drama.

While he has proved that he can make violent movies and can extract best camerawork, Srikanth Addala is suffered by his own vague writing.

Overall, "Peddha Kapu 1" has ambition and attempts to tell a political story, but director’s message is lost in the midst of his confusing narrative. The story is too big for Virrat Karna, the new hero. Despite the newcomer's confident debut, the show is dominated by other actors. The film ends up being a missed opportunity. A political film needs more clarity of thought that can get connected to even “Samanyudu”.

Bottom line: Disappointing

Pedha Kapu (Virat Karrna) is at the forefront of the story, along with his parents (Rajeev Kanakala and Easwari Rao), his brother, and his sister-in-law (Narain and Pragathi). Together, they strive to adapt to their circumstances, making a living while working under the authority of Satya Rangaiah, portrayed by Rao Ramesh. The story then leaps to the 1980s, coinciding with NTR's foray into politics and his efforts to consolidate his party's influence by mediating between two influential figures. Peddha Kapu-1 Movie: Rating Analysis

In totality, Peddha Kapu 1 unfolds as a conventional political narrative set against a rural backdrop. Srikanth Addala appears to have drawn inspiration from his previous work, Narappa, which was a remake of Vetri Maaran's Asuran, and attempted to recreate similar themes involving the stark divide between the privileged and the underprivileged, as well as the intricate web of caste sentiments and divisions. Interestingly, the film's title hints at his true intentions, despite any public denials.

While the film is undoubtedly a product of Addala's dedication and hard work, it ultimately falls into a repetitive and monotonous pattern within the script and storyline. The intensity and emotional depth that was expected seem to have been diluted. The screenplay lacks any significant twists, rendering it one-dimensional.

Nevertheless, Peddha Kapu 1 does boast a couple of impactful dialogues, which manage to leave a lasting impression. Srikanth Addala deserves credit for delivering these hard-hitting lines. However, the film struggles to maintain the desired intensity and emotional resonance at critical junctures.

Furthermore, the film carries a strong political undercurrent related to Andhra Pradesh politics. Given the heightened political climate in the state, it remains to be seen whether Peddha Kapu 1 can make any substantial impact in the lead-up to the upcoming elections in 2024.

Post Brahmotsavam debacle, director Srikanth Addala shifts to bold and rustic content. His previous one was Narappa (Asuran remake) with Venkatesh. Now, he comes up with Pedda Kapu that marks the launch of Virat Karrna as the male lead. Will Srikanth score success and cement his position?

Set in 1980s in a fictional village near Rajahmundry where caste politics and family feuds rule, Peddha Kapu (Virat Karrna) fights against oppression in the village by two power centres – Satya Rangayya (Rao Ramesh) and Bhaiyanna (Aadukalam Naren). How things drastically changed after NT Ramarao starts political party in 1982. How Peddha Kapu settles all the scores by taking on mighty Satya Rangayya and Bhaiyanna is the story. Who is Akkamma (Anasuya) and how is she involved?

Performances

Debutante Virat Karna has made a decent performance. He scored points in action scenes, while he underscored in emotional scenes. Rao Ramesh is best-suited for the role of a crooked villain and selfish politician set in rural milieu. His mannerisms and behaviour create an aura. Pragati Srivastava plays a rural belle and she pulls it off well. She was abandoned by her parents which gives emotional depth. But she is jovial and extroverted. Her character has a twist to the story. Barring this, she doesn’t have much scope to perform. Tanikella Bharani is seen as a drunkard who is vexed with caste and opportunistic politics. He is presented as a person who cares for society and the village. Naga Babu is seen as party incharge. His character is largely involved in bringing Satya Rangayya and Bhaiyyana together to create peace in the village. Anasuya as Akkamma has got a meaty role. There was a lot of hype around her role. But it didn’t translate as expected. Her character couldn’t leave the desired impact. As a villain, Srikanth Addala leaves half-impact. Rajeev Kanakala and Easwari play the parents of Pedda Kapu. They have nothing much to add value to the story. Overall, some performances are over-played and some are too subtle. This uneven in the cast’s performances confuses the viewers.

Technicalities

Pedda Kapu sounds and looks quite ambitious, thanks to visuals, production design and the scale of the film involving large canvas and huge crowd in camera frames. But this suffers with its writing. Director banks on cinematography, background music technically. Songs have failed miserably. Mickey J Meyer couldn’t do the magic. After listening to songs, Mickey was the wrong choice for this genre. The slow-paced narration is yet another shortcoming.

Visuals Rural Set-Up & BGM

Brutal Violence Stretched Out Drama Disconnecting Emotion Slow & Predictable Narration Songs

Rangasthalam, a film set in rural backdrop involving caste politics, turned the Tollywood’s landscape. Allu Arjun’s Pushpa is also the rise of a common man against all the odds in rural setting. The blockbuster result of these films gave huge breather to big-budget rural backdrop movies. Nani travelled the same path with Dasara (again village domination politics and rustic backdrop) and yet again scored success. Even films like Palsa and Uppena has lower-caste and oppression as the core-elements in their plots. And Telugu Cinema has quite familiar with this lower-caste and self-respect theme. Director Srikanth Addala is a late entrant who catches the trend a bit late. After remaking Narappa, Srikanth seems to have believed there is still room to explore this genre.

With Pedda Kapu, Srikanth largely banks upon bold content. He chose raw and rustic content. There was no supporting base (story) to add weight to the raw, rustic content. On top of it, director has gone overboard. The violence is what drives Pedda Kapu with scenes of head-chopping. Blood and gory was all over. All this indicate Pedda Kapu is intentionally a bold attempt. The film has got large canvas, big scale with prominent cast, technicians. But it couldn’t work.

‘Meeku Ante Vunte, Maaku Entha Vandali’, this dialogue sums up the Peddha Kapu’s plight. The first half is decent and promises to be somewhat intense. The interval scene was spine-chilling and gives some high. But the second-half of the film nosedives, leaving audience disappointed. There is a twist as well involving Akkamma (Anasuya). But this twist and following consequences didn’t pan out as it was intended. After Akkamma, the film turns out to be predictable. The climax portions are not engaging. The whole story is narrated in confusing way. The drama has been stretched out without the engaging scenes and without depth. It is only build-up and elevation with BGM. There was no supporting base. Pedda Kapu might be ambitious and intended to become a big film, but it falters marginally in terms of narration. For debutante Virat Karna it is not the end of the world and it is a decent start, for Srikanth Addala, Pedda Kapu is certainly a blow.

Verdict: Addala’s ‘Mass’ter Stroke!

What’s it about?

In the early 1980s, Satya Rangayya (Rao Ramesh) and Bayyanna (AadukalamNaren) are both vying for the position of member of the legislative assembly in the Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh. While these two leaders from different communities have been in power for decades, the arrival of the Telugu Desam party has given a boost to previously marginalized groups. The TDP, which NT Rama Rao founded, is trying to alter the current political climate.

PeddhaKapu (Virat Karna) and his brother become involved in the conflict between Rangayya and Bayyanna while a local leader (Naga Babu) tries to broker peace between them. The kidnapping of Peddha Kapu’s brother by Satya Rangayya’s son (Srikanth Addala) led to Peddha Kapu taking political action that would alter the entire course.

A subplot follows a young woman (Pragati Srivastava) as she searches for the parents who abandoned her in a Bamboo Moram. She is in love with PeddhaKapu, too. PeddhaKapu is leading a revolt, but who is the girl’s real mother. More importantly who is supporting him?

“Peddha Kapu 1”, the first part of Srikanth Addala’s political drama, talks about how winds of change on political front brought turmoil in a Godavari region in the 1980s. Before the arrival of Telugu Desam party, Congress remained in power for many decades in Andhra Pradesh and in most areas, only one or two dominant castes enjoyed the power.

With a new party on the horizon and various castes and communities vying for political power, the ruling classes felt endangered. The protagonist of the film, a commoner in a village who revolts and becomes a leader, belongs to an undefined caste that has been suppressed by dominating castes for many decades. This is a classic story of repressive groups revolting against tyrannical rulers.

The ambitious goal of writer-director Srikanth Addala to chronicle the story of the 1980s political developments is laudable. His goal is to tell the story of a commoner who becomes a change agent. However, stories like this that discuss real politics and social dynamics require more conviction and more clarity from the director in describing. The hazy thoughts and waffling about the edges have little impact.

The film depicts Peddha Kapu, the protagonist, as bringing about change in the community and becoming a leader to the point that NT Rama Rao decides to visit to their village and declare his name as the next MLA. However, it is Akkamma, played by Anasuya, who brings about changes, not Peddha Kapu. Ponniyan Selvan’s Aishwarya Rai character was most likely the inspiration for this character.

Another character, represented by Naga Babu, seeks to bring Satya Rangayya and Bayyanna together while also believing Peddha Kapu will become the leader. Why would he try to mediate peace between two wicked political leaders if he is a representative of the Telugu Desam party, which wants to create change and provide power to good and new people? There appears to be a lot of confusion in director Addala’s mind.

Even though it has a grand vision, great production values, and excellent acting from its cast, the film ultimately suffers from its muddled storytelling and lack of clear thoughts.

All main actors give excellent performances. Virat Karrna, the newcomer in the lead role, makes impressive and confident debut. In certain angles, he reminds us young Prabhas. The leading lady, Pragati Srivastava, has charming looks.

Once again, Rao Ramesh impresses as a ruthless politician. Srikanth Addala excels in his role as a crippled feudal villain. Anasuya as Akkamma shines. AadukalamNaren is impressive as well. Naga Babu is okay.

The film scores higher on the technical front, with Chota K Naidu producing outstanding visuals and rich fames. The production design is superb. While Mickey J Meyer’s songs aren’t very memorable, his background score is captivating.

Srikanth Addala’s writing and directing approach has shifted dramatically. There are much too many violent scenes, as well as beheadings and slayings of other body parts.

Bottom line: “Peddha Kapu 1” has lofty ambitions and attempts to present a political drama set in the 1980s. The film discusses power struggles and class conflict, but it suffers from vague ideas. The performances and production values are excellent, but more clarity is required.

Soft movies director Srikanth Addala is back after a brief gap with a powerful political drama titled Pedha Kapu. He is making it as a two part series and the first part released today starring a newcomer Virat Karna (Brother in law of Miryala Ravinder Reddy of Dwaraka creations) in the lead role. The movie garnered quite a bit of hype, thanks to its neatly cut trailer, title and genre. Lets see if it is worth the hype or not..

Set in early 80s background, the film revolves around two political rivals Satyarangaiah (played by Rao Ramesh) and Bayanna (played by Naren). Virat and his brother works for Satya as his loyal supporters. Virat’s love interest Lakshmi Tayaru (Pragathi Srivatsav) is raised by a drunkard (played by Tanikella Bharani) in the same village. Why and how the loyal brothers turn against Satya? Who is Akkamma (played by Anasuya) and how does she change the course of the story forms the main crux of the story

On screen performances:

Hero Virat is not cut for the role. His voice is weak (especially in the climax) and his facial expressions are very subtle in many of the crucial scenes. Definitely, he needs to improve in the above mentioned aspects for him to continue and have a bright future in the film industry.

Other experienced character artists such as Rao Ramesh, Naren among others gave good performance in their roles. Anasuya gets a meaty role in which she did really good. Eashwari rao and Rajiv kanakala as parents of Virat did justice to their roles. Heroine Pragati, Nagababu, Tanikella Bharani are ok in their roles.

Off screen talents?

Firstly, the film has some stunning visuals by Chota K Naidu. Chota K Naidu being an experienced cinematographer did cent percent justice to the film by showcasing the rustic village feel and periodic tint superbly.

Production values by Dwarka Creations are outstanding. The makers have spend more than the film requires which we can witness on the screen. Music is okay by Mickey J Meyer is just ok, but BGM is top notch.

Director Srikanth Addala came up with a story line which has many characters and twists. Although having a good story line is important for any movie, what made this movie go bit down south is his irregular and confusing screenplay/narration.

Overall, Pedha kapu 1 is a subpar political drama which has its high moments (couple of scenes) but not enough to make it a satisfactory watch over the weekend. Although from technical standpoint (visuals, BGM) it is good, the main complaint is its confusing screenplay/narration which made the story look convoluted. Hope Srikanth Addala takes care of these shortcomings in its sequel.

First Half Report: First half of Peddha Kapu is about conflict between two rival political sides with lead character being part of one side. Cinematography and BGM are very good, on the flip side screenplay/narration is confusing. Baring 2 or 3 scenes first half is average, lets wait for 2nd half.

Final Report:  Peddha Kapu is an intense political drama which has a good plot but falters because of the confusing screenplay.BGM and Visuals are top notch.Srikanth Addala comes up with a convoluted yet good story but couldn’t live up to the hype because of poor narration.Watch this space for a full review.

The promotional content of the film is getting a tremendous response and the film is all set to hit screens on Sep 29th.In an exclusive conversation with ‘Hans India,’ Producer Miryala Ravinder Reddy shared the special features of 'Pedakapu-1.' Let’s have a look into it.

How does it feel that ‘Pedakapu-1’ has created a huge buzz with its teaser trailer?

It is nice to get such a good buzz on the lips. We made it big from the beginning with the belief that it will be a big film.

You can make a movie with a star hero after the success of ‘Akhanda.’ But the reason for making this film?

I also had a dilemma of what to do after such a huge success. There was pressure from close friends to give advances to big stars and directors. At such a time the story of ‘Pedakapu’ came. Notable movies are rare in the Telugu film industry. ‘Pedakapu’ stands out as such a rare film. Dwarka's journey will change after this movie.

Srikanth Addala was compared to Vetrimaran. Can it be so natural?

Absolutely, the movie is so natural. No sets were made in a conspiracy. We took it 100% honestly. We have shown how to show a history before the eyes. We shot in all real locations to reflect the conditions of 1980. We travelled for two hours every day from Rajahmundry and shot in some natural locations.

The reason for giving the title of ‘Pedakapu?’

At first, we thought of some titles for the film. At such a time when Srikanth and I went to see the locations, we saw the name 'Pedakapu'. When I asked the people there about it, they said that it was a person who had done good to that place. Then Srikanth said that our story is also the same story. Pedakapu name is good. So, we named this story Pedakapu.

Have you ever thought of introducing a hero from your home? Did Virat live up to your expectations?

Virat is interested in movies. He is hero material. It felt like watching a big hero while watching on the screen. This is not a regular movie. A very intense action movie. It needs a common man as a hero. Virat is perfect for this. Making a film with such a big canvas with a new hero is a little risky for any director. But we believe strongly in this story. I said earlier that the film should be made in a big way without any boundaries. If necessary, we shoot an episode and if it doesn't match our expected output, let's keep all the unit and change the hero to another hero, but I clearly said that we should not draw boundaries for the story. After that day there was never a feeling that we were doing it with a new hero. After the shooting, the director and the rest of the team are very satisfied.

When is ‘Akhanda 2’ and what are your current projects?

Can't say when but ‘Akhanda 2’ will definitely happen. ‘Pedakapu 2’ will be immediate release after this. There is a movie with Adivi Sesh. Also, few stories are under discussion.

'coup de chance' is a typical woody allen film — with one appalling final detail.

Once upon a time, it might have been strange to think that the arrival of a new Woody Allen movie in theaters would qualify as some kind of event. But much has changed, especially over the past decade, with renewed focus on allegations that Allen sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow , when she was 7 years old — accusations that the director has long denied. Amazon Studios, which had been distributing Allen's movies, cut ties with him in 2018. His two most recent movies, the critically panned A Rainy Day in New York and Rifkin's Festival, were barely shown in the U.S.

And so it came as something of a surprise when news broke weeks ago that Allen's new movie, the romantic drama-thriller Coup de Chance , would be released in American theaters. The decision probably has something to do with the movie's strong reception last fall at the Venice International Film Festival, where more than one critic called it Allen's best film in years.

That may not be saying much, given how weak his output has been since Blue Jasmine 11 years ago. But there is indeed an assurance and a vitality to Coup de Chance that hasn't been evident in the director's work in some time. That's partly due to the change of scenery, as Allen's difficulty securing American talent and financing has led him to the more receptive climes of Europe. While he's set movies in France before, this is his first feature shot entirely in French with French actors. It may have been done out of necessity, but it lends a patina of freshness to an otherwise familiar Allen story of guilt, suspicion and inconvenient desire.

It begins with a random reunion on the streets of Paris. Fanny, played by Lou de Laâge, works at an auction house nearby; Alain, played by Niels Schneider, is a writer. (Even if his name weren't Alain, it would be pretty clear that he's the Allen avatar in this story.)

This is the first time Fanny and Alain have seen each other since they were high-school classmates in New York years ago, during which time, Alain confesses, he had an intense crush on Fanny. There's an immediate spark between them, but alas, Fanny is now married to a wealthy businessman, Jean, played by Melvil Poupaud.

Before long, Fanny and Alain are having a full-blown affair, taking long lunch breaks in Alain's tiny apartment, which is homier and more appealing to Fanny than the spacious Parisian residence she shares with Jean. They also have a beautiful country house where she and Jean go for regular weekend getaways.

Jean often invites friends along to go hunting in the woods, and even before the rifles come out, it's clear that this romantic triangle is destined to end in violence. Many moviegoers will recognize the elements from films like Crimes and Misdemeanors and Match Point : an adulterous romance, a premeditated murder and a darkly cynical consideration of the role that luck plays in human affairs. At one point, Jean notes that he doesn't believe in luck at all — which sounds like an echo of the nihilism that has long been at the heart of Woody Allen's work.

Nothing about Coup de Chance is terribly surprising, in other words. It's a decently executed version of a movie Allen has made many times before, enlivened by Vittorio Storaro's elegant if overly burnished-looking cinematography. As you'd expect, there's a lot of jazz and a lot of loftily repetitive dialogue, the effect of which is somewhat neutralized because the actors are speaking French. They all give crisp, engaged performances, especially Valérie Lemercier as Fanny's shrewd mother, who begins to suspect that Jean is not as trustworthy as he appears.

As the story unravels, one appalling detail sticks out. In a few scenes, Jean is shown playing with a large model train set — and as others have pointed out, it seems to evoke a key detail, also involving a train set, from Dylan Farrow's testimony. Could Allen be referencing his own off-screen scandals, and to what purpose? Perhaps, suspecting that he might be done with the movies at long last, as he's hinted in interviews, he wanted to thumb his nose at his detractors with a provocative parting shot. Or maybe it's just a reminder of something that, for better or worse, has always been true about Woody Allen: For all the many, many characters he's introduced us to over the decades, his truest protagonist and subject has always been himself.

‘Girls State’ Review: One Nation, Under Girls

Balancing confidence with broad smiles, the high school students in this documentary understand that camaraderie goes hand in hand with political ambition.

In 2018, over 1,000 boys gathered in Texas for an elaborate, weeklong program aimed at students interested in politics. This meeting of teenage minds — part of a countrywide initiative sponsored by the American Legion — was captured in the Sundance hit “ Boys State ,” a vérité chronicle of the event, where participants are elected by their peers to different positions in government.

Considering that movie’s success, it hardly comes as a surprise that the filmmakers, Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, used their momentum to produce the follow-up “Girls State.” The directors shot the documentary in 2022 at Lindenwood University, in St. Charles, Mo., where, the movie repeatedly notes, it’s the first time that the boys and girls groups are holding their events simultaneously on the same campus.

If you are imagining coed frivolity or drama, though, think again: These motivated girls are only concerned about the boys insofar as their proximity highlights the lack of parity between their programs. We meet Emily Worthmore, one of the film’s central subjects, as she ticks off achievements. At Girls State, Emily, a conservative Christian, hopes to be elected governor, a goal she shares with the left-leaning Cecilia Bartin, who canvasses the lunchroom by shouting from a chair. Others, including Nisha Murali, eye seats on the program’s Supreme Court, which the attendees anticipate will hear an abortion case.

If the vibe of “Boys State” is that of a Young Republicans conference, the atmosphere at “Girls State” suggests a freshman orientation. By turns giddy and gutsy, the students share in communal songs, icebreakers and empowerment sessions. They seem to intuit that camaraderie goes hand in hand with political ambition, and that they shouldn’t take the curriculum, or themselves, too seriously. Here, cute selfies and résumé building receive equal attention.

Modesty, sympathy, generosity — these are valuable qualities in life and not necessarily in documentary cinema, where tension often acts as a narrative engine. The film tries to complicate its sororal ethos by pointing to the ways in which women are socialized to strive for perfection and avoid raising a stink. But as the film goes on to track a series of frictionless exercises in campaigning, litigation and reporting, one wishes there were more complex ideas introduced in tandem.

“Girls State” uncovers a fascinating division early on after Emily remarks that she has no trouble identifying the girls who lean liberal. “Maybe they’re just,” she pauses, searching for a diplomatic term. “Louder?” The filmmakers pair this observation with a shot in which a cluster of attendees, led by Cecilia, joyfully chant Pitbull lyrics while Emily and others watch from the side.

How is this new generation of young women from both sides of the aisle making their voices heard? What qualities do they prize in their leaders? And what qualities are they learning to prize in themselves?

These questions linger before they are eventually subsumed into the movie’s broader, blander portrait of female rapport and resilience. “Girls State” endears, but it also leaves viewers with the sense that, for a film about young women eager to take on the world’s challenges, the movie could stand to tackle a few more.

When Calls The Heart is a flagship series for the Hallmark Channel and has been for over ten years. With the premiere of the show’s 11th season, does the show’s quality and the characters’ storylines still hold up?

WHEN CALLS THE HEART (SEASON 11): STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: It’s election night. Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) walks out of his campaign headquarters after having just been elected Governor. If this scene feels familiar, it’s because it’s how season ten ended, but now we actually see what happened to Lucas – as he steps off a curb, he calls out to someone, asking “What are you doing here?” and gunshots ring out. The next thing we see is Sheriff Bill (Jack Wagner) racing toward Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and “Mountie” Nathan (Kevin McGarry) to tell them, “It’s Lucas! He’s been shot.”

The Gist: Elizabeth rushed to Lucas’s bedside at the hospital where there was serious concern that he may not survive the two gunshot wounds he sustained, but after the opening credits roll, it’s now four months later and he has managed a miraculous recovery.

Nathan has been on the road investigating who shot Lucas, who has no memory of that night, and soon everyone reads in the paper that the perpetrator, Clayton Pike, was finally arrested. But Bill drags it out of Nathan that he doesn’t think they’ve caught their man. Even though Pike is in jail, Bill thinks that the shady businessman Bernhardt Montague is actually behind the attempted murder, and Nathan agrees. This gives reporter Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) ample opportunity to meddle her way into the story, trying to find new information to break so she can nose her way into any new scoops to publish in the local paper.

With Lucas living in Capital City now and embracing life as Governor, Elizabeth can’t help but move on herself. Though she seems like she’s still wondering where things could go with Nathan, she keeps dropping hints to Rosemary that she’s ready to move on to the next phase of her life. While Elizabeth seems unsure what that means for her romantic life, she definitely knows one way to shake things up: with a dramatic new haircut.

The citizens of Hope Valley gather around their radios to hear Lucas make a special address; he is announcing a new initiative to develop a hotel and resort in Hope Valley. (He received a parcel of land from Leland Coulter to do so.) Lucas announces that his office will be accepting proposals from private investors who might want to pitch their ideas for the resort. With the whole town abuzz over what this could mean for them, the season is set up for plenty of excitement and drama over who will develop the land and what’s going to happen in Hope Valley. As the moon rises over the town, everyone sits outside to watch the planets aligning next to the moon for a beautifully illuminated night sky.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? When Calls The Heart is like an early 20th century period drama version Sweet Magnolias , Virgin River , or Heart of Dixie , featuring strong female leads rounded out by a charming ensemble of townsfolk and tons of soapy, and occasionally life-altering, moments.

Our Take: When Calls The Heart is one of those soap operas where, despite the characters facing incredibly adversity and even tragedy, it remains non-threatening and easy to digest at every turn. As is the, uh, hallmark, of most Hallmark shows and movies, even though we’re presented with characters who are flawed or have hurdles to jump, they remain committed to being pleasant but determined, strong in the face of adversity and vulnerability. It’s aspirational more than realistic: of course this is not the way real people behave, at least not all the time, but it makes you wish there were real towns like Hope Valley where you could find such decent people. There’s nothing a beautiful moon in the sky can’t fix, that sort of thing.

This season, things have been shaken up, with Lucas having moved to become Governor, and Elizabeth trying to find herself, although, thus far, it doesn’t feel like all that much has changed for her, since she doesn’t seem to know how quickly things with Nathan should be moving. But new chapters in some other characters lives are definitely being written right away: Faith (Andrea Brooks) is devastated when Fiona decides not to move back to Hope Valley, but just as she’s wallowing in the emptiness left by the loss of her friend, an elderly patient asks her to care for her granddaughter, Lily. Instant mom! And with Nathan and Bill still sniffing out who could have shot Lucas, there’s a mystery element to grab onto this season, too. When Calls The Heart is the opposite of prestige TV, with its relatively low stakes and characters that are more broad archetypes than real people, but you can’t deny that it’s addictive, especially eleven seasons in, to see where else the show can go and where it may end up.

Parting Shot: As Rosemary, Leland, Elizabeth and Nathan sit outside at dusk, they watch the rare occurrence as Venus and Jupiter align in the sky next to a sparkly crescent moon. “It’s so beautiful,” Elizabeth remarks, looking up. “Yeah, it is,” Nathan replies looking right at her. Ooooooh.

Memorable Dialogue: “Lately, I’ve just been feeling. there’s a change in the air… and inside me,” Elizabeth tells Rosemary. She’s decided to give herself a makeover, starting with a new haircut but… she’s considering a life makeover, too.

Our Call: STREAM IT! I can’t help but compare When Calls The Heart to Grey’s Anatomy , which just kicked off its 20th season. With regard to both shows, they’re not quite the same as when they first premiered, but both have been successful at firmly establishing their main character and the world that revolves around her. As WCTH ‘s devoted fans watch Elizabeth Thornton move into the next phase of her life, the investment we’ve already made in her continues to pay off.

The prequel series Better Call Saul offered a few glimpses throughout its run, and the sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie followed up Jessie Pinkman's story in 2019. Still, passionate and dedicated fans of the series crave more, causing a reactive internet response to a poster going around.
