Research and teaching assistant (phd candidate) in applied artificial intelligence (f/m/d), post-doctoral researcher (f/m/d), our research.

Our research is driven by the strong desire to conquer the grand challenges of our society: bringing AI into healthcare; curbing fake news with AI tools; fighting the coronavirus epidemic with data-driven insights; automating marketing with AI; and developing new tools for “AI for Good”. For this purpose, we draw upon recent advances in artificial intelligence and statistical modeling in order to produce actionable insights. In our research, we develop new AI methods, often inspired by real-world applications.

Our group, led by Prof. Stefan Feuerriegel, is located in Munich. Further information about our group is available on our website.

In our research, we have partnered with leading institutions – the World Health Organization, the OECD, and leading industry players – to develop new state-of-the-art tools for management that are powered by AI. We further aim to publish a top-tier outlet from applied AI (e.g., KDD, WWW). We are also open to more outlets in technical AI (e.g., AISTATS, ICML), statistics, or management (e.g., Marketing Science, Operations Research).

Prof. Stefan Feuerriegel has a dual affiliation with both the LMU Munich School of Management and the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics at LMU Munich. Because of the latter, we are especially interested in developing new methods.

What we offer

You will work with a highly motivated team of aspiring researchers in a very vibrant atmosphere. During this time, participation in conferences and voluntary exchange programs are also supported. Past graduates have landed top-positions in both industry and academia (e.g., University of Oxford). We work together with an international network of researchers (e.g., Harvard, Yale, NYU, Cambridge) to develop solutions for the global challenges of today and tomorrow.

Candidates will also gain experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars, and support students in thesis work. Positions are initially for one year with an option to extend until the end of the PhD.

Your profile

Ideally, the candidate has a Master’s degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or Business Informatics (or a related field). Fluency in the English language is highly recommended. Topic-wise, our research is always open to own proposals and further suggestions. Work is almost entirely research-centered with limited teaching duties. We encourage women to apply.

A tentative candidate will be interested in one (or more) of the following topics:

  • Machine learning / deep learning / artificial intelligence
  • Probabilistic machine learning (hidden Markov models, Hawkes processes)
  • Bayesian learning (MCMC, Gaussian processes, variational inferences)
  • Causal machine learning
  • Policy learning
  • Statistics (Bayes)

Our research group is always open to own proposals and further suggestions. The starting date can be freely chosen. We have scan positions continuously.

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.

Interested? How to apply

We look forward to receiving your online application. We have a lightweight application procedure (CV+transcript only) to minimize effort at both ends. Cover letter or internship reports are not required. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted via email sent to [email protected] . Our preferred language is English.

We are also open for applications from post-doctoral researchers. The research fields are equal to the above described PhD positions. The application process is the same. In addition, please provide us with some information about your research, qualifications and your motives, submitted by email to [email protected] .

Important General Information for PhD / Postdoc Applicants

We fully encourage applications from talented students who are passionate about a career in research . However, we regularly receive very unspecific PhD applications and CVs which lack a focus and a clear motivation. Please note that we only consider candidates who motivate very thoroughly and convincingly why working with me in my field of research is what they would really like to do. In addition to that an applicant should have an outstanding academic record and should be fluent in both written and spoken English. We also expect research experience in a related field of work, preferably documented by respective high quality publications.

Applications which fail to fulfill these requirements will most likely remain unanswered. Finally, the following helps a successful application: 1) We know the applicant personally (e.g through a Master thesis in our group, research visit, etc.) 2) the applicant obtains recommendations from respected authorities in Computer Vision and/or Machine Learning and/or Graphics or related fields.
