Eligibility : md/mph/m.sc. (nursing)/m.phil degree with minimum 55% marks from a recognized university/institution or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed., a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme in clinical sciences viz. mbbs, ayush, bds, bams, bums, bsms, bhms, bpt, bot, b.sc. (nursing), bvsc or a professional degree in allied subjects/fields by the corresponding statutory regulatory body should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed., relaxation to sc/st/obc (non creamy layer)/pwd/ews as per the ugc regulations 2022., the coursework involves hands-on experience, encouraging students to engage with real-world scenarios in both urban and rural settings. this approach aims to cultivate critical thinking skills using both qualitative and quantitative data. students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of optional courses that delve into specific public health issues. in the second semester, there's an intensive journal club, which helps students stay informed about current topics.assessment is conducted through a mix of written tests, assignments, seminars, presentations, and group discussions. this comprehensive evaluation approach ensures that students not only gain knowledge but also develop analytical and communication skills essential for addressing public health challenges., ph.d. in public health (pub), approved courses for mph and phd programme, field work is an intergral part of the academic programme which is credited in different courses. it is done in two phases. the first phase is done during the first semester which entails teaching of courses which familiarize the students with public health and its relationship with social context. the field work is designed to expose the students with the health system, functionaries and programmes; institutions; and the community in an around delhi. in the second phase, which is done in the second (winter) semester, a district other than delhi, is selected to expose the students to the situation which prevail in a typical health system; its connect with other institutions and the community- both in the rural and urban areas., an orientation session preceeds the fieldwork. a team of students, research staff and faculty members co-ordiante the organization, conduct and completion of the field work. based on the insights gained from the fieldwork, a presentation is done and a report prepared., additionally, the mph programme entails a fieldwork in a selected district to write a report on the health system, services, functionaries, infrastructure and access and utilization of health care in the community. the study is done from the district level facility, to the community health centre, primary health centre, sub centre and a village..

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

Programme Overview

The Ph.D in Public health at MIT-WPU prepares scholars to conduct in-depth research in diverse and interdisciplinary areas of Public Health. It trains independent researchers, teachers and leaders through rigorous coursework, research seminars and workshops to develop the expertise and skills needed to make a real impact in academia, industry, government and the community. The programme exposes them to state-of-the-art experimental approaches enabling them to develop analytical, critical thinking and leadership skills in a conducive environment. The programme provides training and learning experiences that support interdisciplinary learning, promote critical and theory-based, problem-solving skills to address public health problems, and inculcate the requisite professional values and ethics

Ph.D Programme Fees

The following candidates are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme

Candidates who have completed:

i) A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institutions accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the commission from time to time.

Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

ii) Candidates who have completed the M. Phil programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of commission from time to time.

Reservation is applicable only to Maharashtra domicile candidates provided they submit the necessary documents for reservation before interview. Outside Maharashtra candidates will be considered in open category.

1. Candidates satisfying eligibility criterion shall be called to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MITWPU. The exemption will be given from Ph.D. entrance test for those students who qualify UGC-NET /UGC-CSIR NET /GATE (valid score)/CEED/GPAT (valid score)and similar national tests.

2. PhD entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer)/Differently abled category, Economically Weaker section (EWS) and other category of candidates. The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

3. The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For selection of candidates a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30% to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given. For GATE/NET/JRF /SET/GPAT/CEED qualified students, the selection will be based on Interview/Viva Voce

4. The recommended candidates will be intimated through email about their selection and the candidates will be offered Ph.D. provisional admission.

5. The eligibility of a candidate is provisional as per information provided by the candidate in his/her application form and is subject to verification of minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the program, educational documents and reservation documents (if any).

6. University keep rights to cancel admission of the Ph.D. scholars in the case of misconduct by the scholar, unsatisfactory progress/absent for consecutive two progress seminars, failure in any examination related to Ph.D., fabrication found in educational and reservation documents, candidate is found ineligible, involved in plagiarism in paper publications and thesis.

7. Provisional eligibility to appear in the selection process is no guarantee for admission to the program.

8. Candidates who will join PhD program full time, they will be provided with the stipend as per MITWPU norms.

9. PhD admission will be confirmed after successful completion of the course work with 55% or more as per UGC norms. Ph.D. programme should be minimum of three years including course work and maximum of six years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. programme.

10. A maximum of an additional two years (2) years can be given through the process of re-registration provided, however, that the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.

11. Provided further that, female Ph.D. scholars and persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of two years(2) ; however the total period for completion of a Ph.D. program in such cases should not exceed ten (10) years from the date of admission of the programme.

12. Female candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave for up to 240 days in the entire duration of Ph.D. programme.

School: School of Health Systems Studies

1. Educational Qualifications: The minimum academic qualification for admission to the Ph.D programmes is a Second Class Master’s or equivalent degree in the relevant subject awarded by a recognised university in India or abroad, with at least an average of 55 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the University Grants Commission (UGC). In the case of SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled candidates, the minimum eligibility is an average of 45 per cent of aggregate marks, or a grade point average of 2.5 under the seven-point scale of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

2. Candidates who have an M.Phil or equivalent degree awarded by a recognized university in India or abroad are also eligible to apply for the Ph.D Programme.

3. Submission of a research proposal is a compulsory requirement for admission for the Ph.D. Programme. A research proposal consisting of approximately 1,000 words should accompany the proposal and indicate the Specification of the broad field of study, Statement of the research problem and scope and objectives of the study, rationale for and the significance of the study, methodology to be followed, references, and the candidate’s research/work experience in that area, if any

The School of Health Systems Studies prepares students for a leadership role in public health and managerial roles in the fields of health and hospital administration. The School’s active social research programmes and national and international research collaborations in areas of health policy, health systems strengthening and public health contributes to the generation of new knowledge in this area and ensures that its educational programmes are updated to respond to current challenges and emergent trends. An important dimension of the Schools’ educational and research activity is the contribution it makes to developing the understanding of health and health care as a social science. The School is quite often called upon to respond to capacity building and knowledge management needs of the government health sector and this allows it to contribute to developing newer and innovative health care strategies, provide advocacy support for public health and build equity concerns into health policy and planning. India Health Policy & Systems  Research   Fellowship Program

India Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) Fellowships Programme is aimed to build the capacity of mid-career public health researchers in Health Policy and Systems Research(HPSR) in India. The programme aims to build leaders in the field who will influence health policy and systems in India.

The programme is designed as an 18-month blended training program which includes an online phase (14 weeks), a face-to-face phase (1 week) and an implementation phase (1 year) wherein select participants will be provided with a research fellowship to conduct a HPS research. These participants will also be mentored by HPS researchers (both national and international). The capacity and opportunity dyad of this fellowship model hope to bring about a transformational change in the HPS research and practice ecosystem in India. 

The programme was conceptualized by Health Systems Transformation Platform (HSTP) and Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru (IPH) through an elaborate and iterative consultative process, and is being implemented by a consortium of institutions including: 

• Health Systems Transformation Platform, New Delhi 
• Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru
• Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp
• Nossal Institute for Global Health, Melbourne
• The George Institute for Global Health, New Delhi
• The Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Trivandrum

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to diagnose HPS problems, design and conduct HPS research, and use the evidence to influence policy and practice, while always keeping a systems thinking, complexity, ethical, equitable, and person-centered lens.

Fellows are expected to build an HPSR research protocol and a public/policy engagement plan at the end of the online and F2F workshop and will obtain mentoring to implement the research. Participants will also be expected to develop and implement a public and policy engagement plan.

About us 

ICMR School of Public Health (ICMR SPH) is the academic division of ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology. ICMR SPH offers training for two-year Master of Public Health in Epidemiology & Health Systems and M.Sc. in Biostatistics , PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics , certificate program in field epidemiology and short courses. The MPH (EHS) is a professional degree in advanced field epidemiology awarded by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, since 2011. The M.Sc. (Bio-statistics) degree is awarded by Periyar University, Tamil Nadu, since 2016.

The PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics is geared towards students and professionals who wish to pursue a career in teaching and/or research in universities or research organizations. The institute is recognised for PhD in Epidemiology by The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and University of Madras and for PhD in Biostatistics by University of Madras . ICMR-SPH offers two-year certificate course in field epidemiology as part of the India-Epidemic Intelligence Service programme (EIS) in collaboration with National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi and CDC-India. Shanthie Mariet D'Souza, PhD Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair, and the School of Public Policy present the India Lab Webinar Series on India's Climate, Energy and Geopolitics.

Curated and Moderated by Dr. D'Souza, the third lecture in the series,  India's Energy Policy and Practice , will be presented on  April 12, 2024 ,  9:30 AM EST  by Narendra Taneja, Global thought leader on energy policy and geopolitics; Chairman, Independent Energy Policy Institute, New Delhi; Distinguished Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, UK.

Narendra Taneja is a noted global thought leader on the geopolitics of energy. He is often cited as “a powerful voice” on the issue of energy and climate, especially in the context of the Global North and the Global South.

He serves as Chairman of the Independent Energy Policy Institute, a new think tank based in New Delhi. He also presides over the World Energy Policy Summit, a reputed conferencing organisation. He was the Founder President of the World Oil & Gas Assembly, a meeting place of top CEOs and policy-makers, from 2001 to 2011. He sits on several International Advisory Boards, including that of the ONS Foundation of Norway and the Energy Intelligence Group of the United States.

His areas of research and expertise range from energy geopolitics and governance to energy security, transition and associated climate issues.

Narendra Taneja is a known conversationalist and moderator on live platforms like TV channels, talk shows and conferences. He is a regular on Indian and international TV channels in debates and conversation and has appeared in global iconic shows like the BBC HARDTalk and CNN’s Amanpour. Also a known political thinker, he had served as the National Convener of Energy Cell and as a National Spokesperson of the BJP, India’s governing party, for several years until recently.

He had earlier served as Chairman of the Energy Security Group of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Chairman of the Energy and Green Economy Working Group (India) of the BRICS Business Council. He had in his early days served as the South Asia Bureau Chief for a number of European business newspapers for over 15 years. He was also Managing Director of the NHST Monde Communications Pvt Ltd, an international joint venture, focussed on emerging economies.

His books include “The Far People – A Norwegian Journal”, motivational “My Thoughts, My Motherland – The Quest for a Golden India” and “Meethi Dhoop”, a collection of short stories in Hindi. He is currently working on two books.

He read economics, business, commerce, policy, leadership, diplomacy and international affairs at St John’s College, Agra in India and at the University of Oslo and the University of Oxford.

India's Climate Policy presented by Shyam Saran

Shyam Saran is a former Foreign Secretary of India and has served as Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Nuclear Affairs and Climate Change. After leaving government service in 2010, he has headed the Research and Information System for Developing Countries, a prestigious think tank focusing on economic issues (2011-2017) and was Chairman of the National Security Advisory Board under the National Security Council from 2013 to 2015. Shyam Saran is currently the President of the India International Centre and a Honorary senior Fellow with the Centre for Policy Research. His book, “How India Sees the World” was published in September 2017. He has recently published his second book, “How China Sees India and the World.” On January 26, 2011, Shyam Saran was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India for his contribution to Civil Service. The Padma Bhushan is the third highest national award in the country. The Emperor of Japan decorated him with the Spring Order, Gold and Silver Star on July 30, 2019, for his services to promoting India-Japan Relations.

Sanyaya Baru is Founder-Trustee, Forum for National Security Studies, India; and, Distinguished Fellow, United Service Institution of India (www. usiofindia.org ) and Centre for Air Power Studies ( https://capsindia.org/ ) . He has been editor of India's major financial newspapers and was Media Advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (2004-09). He was Director for Geo-economics and Strategy, International Institute of Strategic Studies, London (2011-16); and Secretary-General, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (2017-18). Baru was a member of India’s National Security Advisory Board (1999-2001). He was member of the Governing Board of the Centre for Policy Research and Visiting Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore and Indian School of Public Policy, Delhi. He was professor of economics at University of Hyderabad and Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. He was also a member India-ASEAN Eminent Persons Group, 2010.
