Admission requirements

To be admitted to a doctoral programme, you need to have completed courses of at least 240 credits (of which at least 60 credits must be for Master’s level studies) or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

In most cases, students will hold a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree, with a major in the same subject as the intended postgraduate study. The major must include a degree thesis presenting the results of independent research.

The quality of your thesis/theses is of particular importance and it is important that you demonstrate a capacity for independent thinking in this piece of work.

Students must have a very good command of English and you may be asked to include proof of proficiency in the form of a TOEFL or IELTS test, if requested by the individual department.

Applying for a doctoral (PhD) position

Doctoral education is organised at the faculty or department level. Application procedures and periods differ between faculties and departments. While some of them advertise their doctoral positions around the same time every year, mostly in spring, others advertise their positions on an ongoing basis.

You apply for a doctoral education position within a certain subject area. Admission to a doctoral education position is restricted and competition for advertised positions is usually tough.

How to apply

To apply for a doctoral position, you must create an account in the recruitment system Varbi.

Follow the instructions regarding application documents and procedure in the vacancy announcement.

The application documents that you submit through Varbi, including any supporting documents, are sent directly to the faculty or department that advertised the position. 

If you are self-funded through external scholarships or funding, you do not need to create an account in Varbi. You should instead make direct contact with the relevant faculty or department.

Employment as a doctoral student

As a general rule, a person admitted to doctoral studies at Lund University is employed through a doctoral studentship.

If you have a doctoral studentship, you are considered to be both a student and an employee with a salary during your doctoral studies. As an employed doctoral student, you are covered by local and central agreements concerning your terms of employment.

In parallel to the doctoral education programme, as a doctoral student you may work with administrative and teaching duties (no more than 20% of a full-time position).

Lund University is responsible for education-related matters and the study environment regardless of how you finance your doctoral studies. All doctoral students also have access to the University’s Occupational Health Service.

Other forms of financing

It is possible to undertake your studies using another form of financing, such as an external scholarship or an agreement between Lund University and an external employer.

Financed by external employer

If you are admitted to doctoral studies and have a position with an employer other than Lund University, you are solely a student, and it is the employer who is responsible for employer-related matters.

External scholarships

As a doctoral student with a scholarship, you are solely a student. You are therefore not entitled to contractual employment benefits at Lund University.

In some cases, a doctoral student with a scholarship is entitled to apply for a doctoral studentship when three years remain of the third-cycle studies.

About doctoral studies

A doctoral programme consists of 240 ECTS credits and normally requires four years of full-time study. The programme concludes with a doctoral thesis of at least 120 credits.

A 'licentiate' degree is equivalent to half the coursework required for a full doctoral programme and a licentiate thesis of at least 60 credits. It is equivalent to the MPhil of the British education system.

The Swedish Institute, a government authority, receives funding each year for scholarships to international students. They have several programmes available.

Who can apply?

Scholarships awarded by the Swedish Institute are available to international students from specific countries applying for  master's studies  starting in the  autumn semester .

Funded by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarships for Global Professionals is among the more popular scholarships in Sweden for international students. Not only does it offer full tuition fee coverage, but a monthly payment of 11,000 Swedish Kronas (US$1,037.26) will also be provided for your living expenses throughout the study period of your full-time master’s programme. 

This fully-funded scholarship is offered in various universities across Sweden. To be chosen, applicants are expected to have a clear idea of how their education can contribute to t he United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in both their home countries and regions. Adlerbert Study Scholarships

The Adlerbert Study Scholarships is a university award offered to first-year master’s students by the Chalmers University of Technology . Awardees will be given a full tuition fee waiver that’s funded by the Adlerbert Foundations. The university offers a wide range of postgraduate courses under 13 departments , including Architecture and Civil Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Technology Management and Economics. 

The scholarship covers 100% of the tuition fees over your two-year master’s programme. However, only five scholarships will be awarded in 2023 to students who are citizens of one of these countries .

Lund University Global Scholarship 

Lund University Global Scholarship is a selective and merit-based scholarship in Sweden offered to high-achieving students from outside the EU/EEA. It is merit-based rather than needs-based, meaning the application process does not take into account your financial background.

It’s important to note that the scholarship percentage is dependent on the programme or faculty’s budget. It doesn’t guarantee full tuition fee waivers. Living costs are not covered under this scholarship so awardees must still be able to fund their living costs throughout their study duration in the country. To be selected, applicants must show a strong desire to study at Lund University and have been chosen for the programme they picked as their first choice at the institution. 

Karlstad University Global Scholarship

The Karlstad University Global Scholarship covers a part of your tuition fees (25%, 50%, 75%) or in full. Living costs are not covered. Awardees will be notified of their scholarship amount when they’ve been selected. 

Do note that applicants from these 12 countries are not eligible to apply: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Instead, they should apply for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship.

Scholarships and other funding options for master's programmes at Stockholm University.

Stockholm University Scholarship Scheme

The Scholarship Scheme at Stockholm University is aimed at especially qualified students and covers the whole tuition fee for a Master's programme at Stockholm University. This means that students will need to cover their living costs.

Eligibility and selection criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be: 

• a citizen from a country outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland and be required to pay tuition fees for studies.
• admitted to a Master's programme at Stockholm University in the first (international) admission round.

The selection will be based on the academic merits of the applicants and priority will be given to students with Stockholm University as their first choice on universityadmissions.se .

Application process

When the Notification of selection results is published, eligible students will be sent an electronic application form to the email address given in their application to universityadmissions.se.  

The Scholarship recipients and other applicants will be informed of the results by the end of April.

Swedish Institute Scholarships

The Swedish Institute (SI), a government agency, offers scholarships each year for international students. Only students with citizenship from certain selected countries are eligible for an SI scholarship.

Scholarships in Arbitration Law

Two scholarships are also usually available to specifically study the master programme in International Commercial Arbitration Law (ICAL). These are the Stockholm Arbitration Scholarship (SAS) and the Swedish Arbitration Association (SAA) Scholarship. These scholarships cover the cost of the tuition and are therefore a funding opportunity for students with citizenships outside the EU/EEA.

KTH Scholarship

The KTH Scholarship covers the full tuition fee of a one or two year master's programme. In 2023, 8 % of the scholarship applicants admitted to a programme were nominated for the KTH Scholarship (55 out of 677). The selection process for the scholarship focuses on academic excellence and drive to contribute to sustainable development.

Scholarship content

The KTH Scholarship covers the tuition fee at KTH for the first and the second year, provided that the study results during the first year are satisfactory. The scholarship does not include living costs.

• How to apply

You can apply for the KTH Scholarship through the "Apply now" button, which is available in the grey box above when the application is open (1 December 2023–15 January 2024). Press the button to access the application form that you need to fill out to complete your KTH Scholarship application. You do not need to submit any additional documents since we can access your application documents at universityadmissions.se during the evaluation process.

Requirements

To be eligible for the scholarship you must be a fee-paying student and have applied for a master’s programme at KTH as your first priority and paid the application fee.

Eligible programmes

KTH Scholarships are available for applicants to all programmes except for joint Erasmus+, EIT Digital, EIT InnoEnergy, EIT Urban Mobility and Nordic Five Tech programmes, and the joint programme Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering. However, applicants to some of these programmes can apply for the KTH Joint Programme Scholarship . Applicants for the joint master's programmes in Molecular Techniques in Life Science, Biostatistics and Data Science, and Innovative Technology for Healthy Living (EIT Health) are eligible for the KTH Scholarship.

Sustainable development is an integral part of KTH’s operations and spirit. During your time at KTH you will acquire the tools to move society in a more sustainable direction. As a consequence, scholarship applicants should describe how they intend to contribute to sustainable development with a master’s degree from KTH.

Selection process

The scholarship is awarded primarily on the basis of academic excellence and the selection process is undertaken in parallel with the admissions process. Only applicants who fulfil the admission requirements of the programme applied for are eligible for a scholarship. After the applicants have been assessed for admission, an assessment of applicants for the scholarship is made based on the following criteria:

• The applicant's grades (GPA or equivalent)
• The ranking of the university that awarded the applicant's bachelor's degree
• The applicant's extracurricular research experiences or publications, relevant work experience, relevant teaching experience, awards from competitions and extracurricular activities
• The applicant’s motivation how they will contribute to the sustainable development goals with a master’s degree from KTH

Sweden Government Scholarships for International Students

A number of scholarships are funded and granted by the Swedish government for students outside Europe.

Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP) target highly-qualified students from selected countries and are awarded for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden. It covers both tuition fees, living costs, and insurance, Travel costs.

The Visby Programme Scholarships The Visby Programme provides a number of full scholarships for master’s programs in Sweden to students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine. The scholarship covers the tuition fee, living expenses of SEK 9,000 per month, insurance, and a one-time travel grant of SEK 5,000.

University of Borås Tuition Fee Waivers The University of Borås offers tuition fee waivers to highly qualified students required to pay tuition fees and who are applying for eligible Masters’s Programmes at the University. The scholarships are intended to cover the tuition fee by approximately 50%, they are not designed to cover living costs.

Chalmers IPOET Scholarships The IPOET Scholarships are open to citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are required to pay tuition fees and who are applying to Master’s Programmes offered at Chalmers University. The scholarship is a 75% reduction of the tuition fees.

Halmstad University Scholarships Each year, Halmstad University offers a number of scholarships to qualified students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who are required to pay tuition fees. These scholarships are for Master’s Programmes within any field of study offered at the University. The Halmstad University Scholarship covers 25% or 50% of the tuition fee and will be deducted from the tuition fee.

Karlstad University Global Scholarship Program   The Karlstad University Global Scholarship program aims to attract top academic students from countries outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) who are required to pay tuition fees for studies. Scholarships cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fees.

Karolinska Institutet Global Master’s Scholarship Karolinska Institutet offers a handful of tuition fee scholarships to excellent students who have been admitted to one of our Global Master’s Programmes starting each Autumn semester. The scholarship only covers the tuition fee cost, not living expenses, and only for studies at Master’s level.

Kristianstad University Scholarships The scholarship will be awarded to citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA who are required to pay tuition fees for studies at Kristianstad University. If granted a scholarship, it will include a full or partial reduction of the tuition fee.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology Tuition Fee Waivers A limited number of tuition fee waivers will be available for citizens from non-EU/EEA/EFTA countries who are required to pay tuition fees and who have applied for a Master’s program at KTH. If granted a scholarship, the tuition fee will be waived for the total length of the program.

Linnaeus University Scholarships Linnaeus University Scholarships are for students who are from a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland and who have applied for a study program at Linnaeus University.  The scholarships usually cover 75 percent of the tuition fee but a few scholarships from the Linnaeus Academy of Science and Business cover 100 percent of the tuition fee.

Linköping International Scholarships The LiU International Scholarship is aimed at supporting international students with significant academic potential from countries outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) who are required to pay tuition fees for studies. With LiU International Scholarships, tuition fees are reduced by 25%, 50%, or 75%

Lund University Global Scholarship Programme The Lund University Global Scholarship Programme is targeted at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) and are required to pay a tuition fee  The scholarships are available for Bachelor’s or Master’s level studies.  Scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of the tuition fee.

Mälardalen University Scholarships Every year, Mälardalen University offers a limited number of scholarships to students coming from countries outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland who are required to pay tuition fees and who are applying for a master’s program at the University as their first choice.  The scholarship will cover 100% of the tuition fee of the program as long as you follow the normal study plan. The scholarship does not cover living expenses.

Malmö University Master’s Scholarship The Malmö University Master’s Scholarship (MUMS) is for highly talented students who are citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland and are admitted to an English-taught master’s program at Malmö University. The scholarship covers the entire tuition fee.

Mid Sweden University Tuition Fee Scholarships All students who have applied to study a Master’s program at Mid Sweden University and who are required to pay tuition fees are welcome to apply for a Mid Sweden University Tuition Fee Scholarship. The scholarship covers 75% of the tuition fee.

Örebro University Scholarship Programme The Örebro University Scholarship program is aimed at top academic students from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, who are required to pay tuition fees for studies. The scholarship covers full or partial tuition fees but does not cover living expenses.

Stockholm University Scholarship Scheme The scholarship scheme at Stockholm University is aimed at especially qualified students admitted for Master programs coming from countries outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland and who are required to pay tuition fees. Stockholm University scholarships cover tuition fees only, which means that students will need to cover their own living costs.

Uppsala Universal Global Scholarships Uppsala University Global Scholarships are targeted at citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland and are towards Master’s programs offered at the University. These scholarships cover the cost of tuition but not living expenses.

Sweden Government Scholarship 2024-2025 (SISGP)

The Swedish Institute Scholarship is a program funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that hopes to evolve young leaders to help in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in their own country. It is also a platform to help scholars grow professionally and build a network in Sweden.

The only program offered for international students under this Sweden Government scholarship is the master’s degree program. Bachelor’s degree program is not covered by the SI scholarship. The selection process for this scholarship is tough and only 4-6% of the applicants will be granted with scholarship.

There are 42 countries eligible for this scholarship namely Armenia; Azerbaijan; Bangladesh; Bolivia; Belarus; Brazil; Cambodia; Cameroon; Colombia; Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Georgia; Ghana; Guatemala; Honduras; Indonesia; Jordan; Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Moldova; Morocco; Myanmar (Burma); Nepal; Nigeria; Pakistan; Peru; Philippines; Russian Federation; Rwanda; Sri Lanka; Sudan; Tanzania; Tunisia; Turkey; Uganda; Ukraine; Vietnam; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

Sweden Government scholarship benefits

The SI will pay the full amount of tuition fees to the university that you will be attending for a full-time one-year or two-year master’s program. Throughout the scholarship, a monthly allowance of SEK 10,000 will be awarded to cover the living expenses.

A travel allowance of SEK 10,000 is rewarded to students from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus, Russian Federation, Turkey, Ukraine, or Moldova. A travel allowance of SEK 15,000 will be given to students from Brazil, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Colombia, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Ghana, Gambia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Honduras, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Myanmar, Jordan, Malawi, Nigeria, Nepal, Peru, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Tunisia, Tanzania, Vietnam, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

The travel allowance does not cover students who are already living in Sweden. Application fees and grants for family members who come with the student in Sweden are not included.

Eligibility Criteria for the Sweden Government scholarship

An applicant must be a citizen of one of the 42 countries eligible for the SI scholarship. Sufficient documents that prove work and leadership experience must be submitted. If you have dual citizenship, you must use only one citizenship to apply for this Sweden Government scholarship. Using both citizenships to apply for more than one scholarship will mean disqualification. An exception to this dual citizenship criteria is Romanian students with dual citizenship. They may still apply but must use the citizenship eligible for the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals.

Applicants from countries not mentioned in the scope of this scholarship may look for other scholarship opportunities .

For the requirement on work experience, at least 3,000 hours of work experience before the start of application from not more than three organizations is required. This may include full-time and part-time employment, as an employee, employer, or freelancer. Current employment during the time of application is not obligatory for Sweden Government Scholarships.

Applicants with strong professional backgrounds will be prioritized.

Work experience related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be given utmost priority for applicants from Bangladesh; Bolivia; Brazil; Cambodia; Cameroon; Colombia; Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Ghana; Guatemala; Honduras; Indonesia; Jordan; Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Morocco; Myanmar (Burma); Nepal; Nigeria; Pakistan; Peru; Philippines; Rwanda; Sri Lanka; Sudan; Tanzania; Tunisia; Uganda; Vietnam; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

Related experience within the field of democracy, human rights, gender equality, independent media, and equal opportunities and non-discrimination are prioritized in applicants from Turkey.

For the leadership experience, you may demonstrate this by your previous work experience, or association in civil society organizations. This includes experience in leading other colleagues or organizations, the mandate to influence the development strategy for the organization, and experience in decision-making processes. No minimum number of hours is required.

Language proficiency is not a requirement for application to a master’s program.

You can be disqualified if you have already lived in Sweden for more than two years before the Sweden Government scholarship period, hold a degree from a Swedish university or college, are currently enrolled in a study program at a Swedish university, or hold a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship.

How to apply to the Sweden Government scholarship

First, you must find out if the master’s program is available for your country of citizenship. Next, check if you are eligible for the said program. There are about 600 master’s programs that are being taught in English here . Apply through university admissions to apply for master’s programs or directly to the Swedish university that is eligible for SI scholarships. After applying, submit the required documents and pay the application fee. The fee is not for the SI scholarship but for the admission application to the university admissions. You do not need to inform the SI of your application fee because the SI will receive the information directly from the university admissions. Save the application number that will appear on your account.

On the Swedish Institute website , submit all the documents needed as instructed by the website. Fill out the online application form and attach all the documents. Make sure to submit before the application deadline. Documents for the Sweden Government scholarship application include a motivation letter, letter of reference, valid and completed proof of work and leadership experience, a copy of your valid passport, and curriculum vitae.

The university will evaluate the applications and issue the result of the application at the university admissions. Once accepted to a master’s program, another selection process will be conducted by the Swedish Institute. The list of successful applicants will be published on the website and a confirmation e-mail will be sent also.

Application deadline for the Sweden Government scholarship

The scholarship application period for the autumn semester is around October and ends in February. Spring semester application opens in June and ends in September. Be wary of the dates because the application period may change from time to time. Take note of key dates and deadlines for more successful admission.
