Information for PhD students

PhD student Tomer Shenar (credit: T. Shenar/UP)

“What really amazes me about Potsdam is that we are on such good terms with our professors! Lecturers can be approached whenever necessary, and you can’t get lost in the crowd. I also like the campus at Golm. It’s rather quiet here so you can concentrate on your research. It’s a good contrast to Berlin: you can study and research in the country and live in the city where all the parties are happening. Even commuting has its advantages. By taking the train to work each day, I find enough time to read all the main papers, edit texts and prepare presentations.

Tomer Shenar, former PhD student at the University of Potsdam

Diverse research options for your doctorate

Featuring a university and three leading international non-university institutions, the location of Potsdam has a unique range of topics available in astrophysical research. You can choose (virtually) any topic for your doctoral research project. University and non-university research groups explore the cosmos at all scales, from the sun to the large-scale structures of the universe. The methodology applied comprises observation and data evaluation, theoretical – analytical and numerical – methods, as well as the development of hardware and software for astronomical instrumentation. Potential topics for doctoral theses can be found on the Astrophysics Network institutions’ websites.

In Potsdam, you can pursue a doctorate at the university or in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), the Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron (DESY) or the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI). You will usually need around three years to complete a doctorate.

Structured doctorates

In order to ensure that you make optimum use of your time and get your academic career off to a successful start, the non-university institutions in the Astrophysics Network have agreed to offer structured doctoral training in collaboration with the University of Potsdam. This agreement regulates the rights and obligations of the supervisors and doctoral candidates, and recommends that success is monitored at regular intervals. Joint events directed at all doctoral candidates in the network are also offered, enabling you to establish contacts to other researchers. Three subject-specific Graduate Schools enable doctoral candidates to conduct research within a thematic network with a suitable curriculum. You will also have the opportunity to develop your professional and personal skills at the University of Potsdam’s interdisciplinary Potsdam Graduate School.

Central university facilities, international matters

The university has numerous facilities that are also available for use by employees of the non-university institutions. You will have special access to university services such as the University Sports Club, the libraries, canteens and other services offered at the University of Potsdam. For example, the Welcome Center provides support to international researchers who relocate to Potsdam, and helps them deal with the authorities. Child care facilities and the Equal Opportunity Coordination Office contribute to family-friendliness. You can attend all kinds of language courses at the Center for Languages and Key Competences; and if you are contemplating starting up a company, you will receive support from Potsdam Transfer.

The Welcome Center Potsdam assists international doctoral candidates in the enrollment process. If you are enrolled at a foreign university and simply want to research in Potsdam for one or more semesters, you can also enroll as a ‘program student’.

Ten phd/postdoc positions, university of potsdam, germany.

The Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1287 “Limits of Variability in Language: Cognitive, Computational, and Grammatical Aspects” in Potsdam, Germany, invites applications for 10 positions for PhD candidates and Postdocs available from July 2021 for a duration of four years.

The linguistic system exhibits a high degree of variability at all levels of linguistic description. This variability in language can be characterised as a range of different possible linguistic behaviours that are available to an individual language user, a group of language users, or in specific languages. The variability is limited by the constraints of the underlying linguistic system and shaped by cognitive and social or communicative factors. This variability is not just reducible to random noise but provides an important source of information to explain and predict linguistic behaviour. By modelling the factors influencing linguistic behaviours, the CRC (21 PIs in 13 scientific projects, one transfer project, and three service projects) contributes to a better understanding of the underlying mental representations and processing architectures in individual language users, as well as of the grammatical options available in individual languages and specific linguistic varieties, and options shared by particular subgroups of languages users.

The CRC provides a fantastic research infrastructure including a large interdisciplinary network of researchers, its own graduate school (successful PhD candidates and Postdocs automatically become members of the MGK - Integrated Research Training Group), and funding opportunities for conference visits, summer schools, hosting international experts etc.

Applicants can apply for one or more of the following projects according to their interest and qualification:

B01:(In)Variability in prosodic cues and their incremental use in perception, production, and interaction (Isabell Wartenburger, Outi Tuomainen, Sandra Hanne)

B02: The link between production and comprehension. Insights from aphasia (Frank Burchert, Nicole Stadie)

B03: Modelling the connection between eye-movement control, sentence processing, and brain signals (Shravan Vasishth, Ralf Engbert, Milena Rabovsky)

C03: Effects of variable input on word learning and word recognition in infants (Barbara Höhle, Adamantios Gafos)

C06: Grammatical processing and syntactic change (Ulrike Demske, Claudia Felser)

C07: Limits of variability in phonotactic acquisition due to universal biases: A cross-linguistic investigation of monolingual and bilingual infants (Natalie Boll-Avetisyan)

C08: Consequences of head-argument order for syntax (Gisbert Fanselow)

T01: Transforming text across media (Manfred Stede, Tatjana Scheffler)

The University of Potsdam has a vibrant and interdisciplinary scientific community spanning many disciplines, including leading groups in the field of cognitive sciences ( http://www.uni-potsdam.de/en/cognitive-sciences/index.html ). The programme is taught in English.

The interdisciplinary field of data science deals with methods for using data to automatically produce knowledge, insights, and models for prognosis, risk, and action. The Master's degree programme, which is taught in English, connects machine learning, statistical data analysis, natural scientific methods of data assimilation, and business analytics. The programme offers broad and interdisciplinary structured training in methods and is characterised by a strong emphasis on practice and research.

The interdisciplinary structured Master's degree in data science combines content from computer science, mathematics, information systems, and the natural sciences. Core courses provide you with an overarching understanding of machine learning and deep learning, statistical data analysis, data assimilation, business analytics, and big data infrastructures. More specialised courses help you engage with the current state of research in the chosen areas of focus.

In seminars, you will work through complex topics, and in the module of applied data science, you will apply the competences you have acquired in a practical manner. In the research module, you will be connected to a research project at the University of Potsdam or one of Potsdam's many research institutions. An internship in industry is also an option. Berlin/Potsdam's lively start-up scene and many big data companies offer ample opportunities for internships.

In the four-semester Master's programme, you will earn a total of 120 credit points, consisting of the modules and your Master's thesis. For additional information, please consult the subject-specific degree regulations  or the  Departmental Advisory Office .

An internship in industry is a possible option. Berlin/Potsdam's lively start-up scene and many big data companies offer ample opportunities for internships.

  • Online study material provided by institution

No tuition is charged for studying at the University of Potsdam (with the exception of a few continuing education courses). There is only an administrative fee, which currently amounts to 316 EUR. This semester contribution includes a semester ticket entitling you to free use of public transport all over Brandenburg and Berlin.

Living in Germany is rather cheap compared to other countries in Northern and Western Europe. Monthly living expenditures of students at the University of Potsdam vary between 870 and 1,200 EUR, largely depending on accommodation. A more detailed list of the average monthly expenditures of our students can be found here .

Applying for a Master's degree generally requires you to hold an undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor's degree. A first degree in either computer science or mathematics qualifies you for this Master's degree in any case. A degree in information systems or natural sciences qualifies you if your first degree strongly emphasised content from the areas of computer science or mathematics. Depending on your background, bridge modules can complete gaps in the other respective discipline.

You can find the exact prerequisites for admission in the subject-specific admission regulations  for the Master's degree programme in data science.

The programme requires proof of good English skills corresponding at least to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Job opportunities for students alongside their studies are numerous. Depending on personal and professional skills, students can find jobs in the service sector (e.g. in restaurants, supermarkets, cinemas, museums, theatres, etc.) or work as student assistants at the University of Potsdam or at one of the many non-university research institutions located in the area. The German capital, Berlin, is located just around the corner, and students can also find jobs there. Please see this website for further information.

There are several student dormitories in Potsdam. These are administered exclusively by Potsdam's Association for Student Affairs ("Studentenwerk Potsdam"). You can apply for a room in one of these dormitories if you are under the age of 30. If you are a Master's student, you can only apply if the degree at the University of Potsdam is your first Master's programme. Additionally, there are also a few private dormitories in Potsdam, to which these conditions do not apply. SUNY Potsdam gets a $1.1M boost in State funding

P OTSDAM, N.Y. (WWTI) – The SUNY Board of Trustees has announced the additional allocation of $1.1 million in Direct State Tax Support for the SUNY Potsdam campus, which is an 8.4% increase over the last fiscal year, according to a SUNY Potsdam press release.

The boost goes above the elevated support that was set in last year’s historic state funding increase, for a total of $3.6 million in additional ongoing support for the SUNY Potsdam campus, a 33.4% increase in Direct State Tax Support over the past two years.

“ We are gratified that SUNY Potsdam has received an increase of more than $1 million in our budget allocation from the State University of New York System, expanding on last year’s historic increase in public higher education funding across New York State. Thanks to our increased support, we will be able to advance strategic priorities on both the campus and the System level, in order to better serve students today, while preparing them for tomorrow ,” SUNY Potsdam President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith

The funding will provide $2,858,822 total in ongoing operating support for SUNY Potsdam for the 2024-25 school year, plus a total of $239,000 to support student internship experiences. Additionally, the allocation includes:

  • $4,200 for graduate student fees;

The State University of New York at Potsdam will honor the Class of 2024, as hundreds of students earn their undergraduate and graduate degrees, during the College’s 204th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18.

This year, SUNY Potsdam is set to honor nearly 1,200 candidates for graduation, including all students who earned their degree or were eligible to graduate in 2023-24. Of those, 459 bachelor’s graduates and 305 master’s graduates are currently set to cross the stage during the ceremony.

The College will hold its Commencement Ceremony outside in the Academic Quad, rain or shine, unless there are extreme weather conditions. Guests are asked to dress appropriately for the weather, and bring umbrellas, blankets or sunscreen if needed. There will be an option for guests who are uncomfortable with weather conditions to watch the ceremony live on a large screen inside, in the Barrington Student Union Multi-Purpose Room.

For family and friends around the world, SUNY Potsdam will stream the ceremony live on the College’s YouTube channel again this year.

There is an emergency weather plan for Commencement, in case of extreme conditions like lightning or freezing temperatures. Under the emergency plan, there would be two ceremonies held back-to-back, at 10:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., in the Maxcy Hall Ice Arena. Graduates would be divided into two groups and given four tickets for guests. Overflow seating would be made available in the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.

Immediately following the ceremony, a reception will be held for graduates and guests.
