Frequently Asked Questions About Research & Developement Logos

What kind of research logo design is more effective professionally.

Research is of many kinds so the kind of research logo that can be most effective for your business depends a lot on the business type. For example, if you run an applied research firm and provide survey and other research services to your clients, a magnifying glass icon or statistics related icons such as charts and graphs may be more appropriate.

For a research lab logo , you need to be more scientific. Atomic chemical flask logos , medical signs, and atom icons are all good choices. It’s important to have a very clear design brief before you sit down to sift through the research logo templates for your final design.

What should a good medical research logo consist of?

It depends on whether you are going for an icon-based research logo or a text-based logo . If your medical research logo consists of a symbol then it must be accompanied by an appropriate font as well as color integration that complements the look.

However, if you’re going for an alphabet logo or a wordmark, then forget about the icon and pay all attention to how the letters will be shaped to add the most impact in the medical logo design . Still, no matter if it’s an icon or a word logo, remember that sometimes colors play the biggest role in logo design work .

So, whether alphabet or shape, choose colors that are related to science, look tastefully professional, and add a sense of creativity in your medical research brand logo .

Can I download free research logo samples from your gallery?

Sure you can. But remember that the free research logo samples you download may come with LogoDesign.net’s watermark added in the images to protect the copyright.

If you want to use any of those logos as your professional research logo designs, consult our logo experts .

Click on the design that you like and enter our customization panel. The advanced customization options let you personalize the design according to your business and design needs. You can then download the watermark-free research logo vector for a nominal designer fee that won’t put a dent in your design budget.

If you just want to browse our logo gallery for research logo inspirations , then you are definitely free to do so. No payments charged.

How can a research and development logo help my business?

When you launch a new business, the logo helps give you a visual identity. This visual identity that you get from your research and development logo tells your clients who you are, what you do, and why they should choose you and not your rivals.

Since research and development is a multitier industry, with a new attractive brand logo you can create a niche for yourself. Your R&D logo can tell clients if you are involved in infrastructure development or work more in the medical field. The right research logo can set your research center apart from a gene development organization, for example.

It also tells clients how you’re relatable. For example, if you want to hire the best brains in the industry, the most representative medical or science logo can be your first and most effective advertisement.

Will I have the copyright of my R&D logo?

The copyrights will remain with the original designer, that is Logo Design , and you will be able to use the design for as long as you like after paying a one-time small fee.

However, it’s possible to buy the copyrights of a research logo design, especially because as a research agency you may not want to be confused with other businesses. If that’s the case, send us an email at [email protected] to find out if the design is up for sale. If it is not, you can simply choose another design as your R&D business logo .

Please also know that we offer customized logo design services too. You can hire one of our designers to create a unique research business logo that’s only yours.

What makes a good Research logo?

research company logo

Not all Research logos are created equal. Choosing the right logo type for your business is one of the keys to creating a great Research logo. There's an array of logo types and what you choose depends on the emotions and message you want your logo to evoke. Logos with just text or simple letters can convey professionalism or luxury, whereas a Research logo with just an icon can be more jovial and exciting - maybe your logo should have both? This is a critical decision in the logo design process.

research company logo

Ever considered why some companies use specific colors in the Research logo? Or why some businesses have certain colors in their branding? Color theory and psychology is the science of eliciting emotions and feelings via the use of color. Knowing what colors trigger different reactions from consumers can help a company create the perfect Research logo for their business. It definitely pays to choose the right colors for your Research logo. Want to be seen as a dependable, trustworthy brand or maybe you want to be sporty and active. Choosing the right colors for your logo is the key to getting the message right.

research company logo

Shapes & Patterns

Just like colors, shapes can influence a person's emotions. The psychology of shapes has a key role in creating a great Research logo. We're not just talking about squares, circles and triangles here, but the geometric patterns that make up your Research logo. Sharp corners and straight lines are aligned with discipline and strength, whereas softer curves, ovals and ellipses can convey a sense of eternity, mystery or magic. There's more shapes to consider as part of your logo - natural shapes like leaves, complex shapes like spirals or even abstract patterns. Getting the balance right will help you get the perfect Research logo for your brand.

A Study of 597 Logos Shows Which Kind Is Most Effective

  • Jonathan Luffarelli,

research company logo

Is your logo too simple for its own good?

Great logos help sell products. But what kind of logo is right for your brand? Researchers analyzed 597 companies to answer this question. They discovered descriptive logos (those that include visual design elements that communicate the type of product) more favorably affect consumers’ brand perceptions than nondescriptive ones (logos that are not indicative of the type of product). They also found that descriptive logos are more likely to improve brand performance — unless consumers associate your product with sad or unpleasant things, in which case a nondescriptive logo is probably better.

Imagine you are a marketing manager about to launch a brand called Noxu, which markets jigsaw puzzles. You just received an email from your CEO, asking you to choose between two logos. Your goal is to choose the one that will make the launch more successful. Which logo should you choose: the one on the right or the one on the left?

logo research: 5 things to ask before you start to design

A successful design process requires good logo research before you start on a branding project.

A designer doing logo research to design a logo

Logo research is essential. The logo design process doesn't start in design software or even in a sketchbook. There are several things you should ask before you start to design a logo if you want to have the best chances of success.

Proper research can help ensure that you fully understand the problem at hand so you can design a solution that you can present with confidence, armed with the knowledge you need to back up your decisions. That's more likely to help you get approval from your client quickly if not first time) and to help the project succeed in the real world. In comparison.

You can't just guess the logo that a client requires, and a poorly researched project is likely to be rejected if the client feels the designer has failed to understand the problem. Research is your opportunity to discover what you need to design, why you need to design it, and how it will be used. There's no such thing as having too much information, especially if you're going to design a logo for a product or service you're not familiar with.

But what topics should you research? Here are five key questions and areas to focus preliminary research on before designing a logo. See our tips on how to design a logo for more advice, and for tips on the business side,  see our guide to how much should you charge for a logo?

Logo research: 5 things to ask before you design a logo

01. why does the company need a new logo.

Before you design a logo, it's essential you understand the real reason you're doing it. If it's a new company the answer to this question is self-evident. But if the logo is a redesign, this is a whole different story.

If the company is young it may have designed the logo in-house or had it designed on the cheap and now it simply needs a refresh. A more established business will, however, redesign its identity to signify change.

What to research before you design a logo

Change can come in many forms: new ownership, new management, new product or service, or a new ethos. Be it a merger, a change to the way things are done, or a new brand statement, ensure you understand all you can about the current situation and the goals of the business moving forward. This will decide if you need to simply evolve the current design, or take it in a whole different direction altogether.

02. What does the company do?

It's might sound obvious, but you need to know what the company does and why. Find out the history of the company, the products or services it offers, and the problem(s) it solves.

Look to understand the company's values. What message is the client trying to communicate with its target audience, and how does it want customers to feel when they engage with the brand? This will often heavily influence the attitude of the design. Don't simply rely on what the client tells you either. Be prepared to dig deeper, reading industry blogs and information to gain a true understanding of the product and service.

03. Who is the target audience?

You must know the audience the business will be targeting so that you can design a logo that will attract them. Some companies will be able to describe their exact audience, while some smaller companies will not be sure, or may ask to target everyone. In these cases, ask the client to describe its ideal customer.

What to research before designing a logo

Understand the demographics of the audience: their age, gender, location, income level, lifestyle and behaviour. Understand their needs and the problems they are experiencing to require the products or services of the company you're designing for.

04. What are the company's long-term goals?

A logo should stand the test of time, so expect the logo you're designing to still be in use in five to 10 years' time. For that reason you must understand not only where the company is today, but what its long-term goals and ambitions are.

For example, if a company currently offers only one service, but plans to extend its offering at a later date, it's essential you are aware of this so that you can factor this into your design.

A valuable exercise is to ask the client to describe where it sees itself in five years' time. This will allow you to get a realistic picture of it foreseeable plans and long-term ambitions.

05. Who is the competition?

Knowing about the competition is valuable when you start to design a logo as you can learn what identities the audience will already be familiar with in the sector. This information will also ensure you avoid unintentionally mimicking an already-known brand.

Pinpointing competitors isn't always an easy task. Sometimes the client will tell you who it believes it's in competition with, but its own assessment may be way off. Combine the information it provides with your own research. Look at the identities of direct competitors (those that offer the same product or service to the same audience) as well as indirect (those that offer a similar product or service).

Your goal is to design a logo that separates the company from its competition rather than to replicate an existing design. It's a valuable exercise to keep a visual record of both the competitor's logos and identities to reference your designs against at a later date.

Research is a powerful tool, which will make you a better designer and a more knowledgeable person. For inspiration, see our pick of the best logos of all time and the best new logos . Also see our pick of resources for logo designers .

How To Do a Proper Research Before Creating A Logo Design

research company logo

Created by Ramotion | https://dribbble.com/shots/20203959-FLYR-Logotype-Branding-logo-design-logotype-visual-identity

Welcome to the exciting world of logo design, fellow creatives! If you're anything like me, you're buzzing with ideas and ready to jump right into the design process. But hold on a second, there's a crucial step we often overlook – conducting proper research before creating a logo design.

Yes, you heard it right. The cool, sleek logos we admire didn't just materialize out of thin air. Behind every successful design is a robust amount of research, digging deep into the essence of the brand, understanding the audience, and scoping out the competition.

As designers, it's easy to get carried away with our creative instincts. But remember, our role is more than just producing a visually appealing logo. It's about crafting an emblem that resonates with the target audience, stands out in the crowded market, and perfectly encapsulates the brand's identity. That's where proper research before creating a logo design comes in.

So, are you ready to level up your design game and dive into the nitty-gritty of logo design research? Let's start our journey together!

I. Understanding the Purpose of the Logo

First up on our deep-dive into conducting proper research before creating a logo design is to fully grasp the purpose of the logo. After all, the essence of any great logo lies in its relevance to the brand it represents.

At its core, a logo is more than just a pretty picture—it's a visual ambassador for a brand, a powerful tool that communicates a company's values, its mission, and its unique personality. This means that as designers, our job goes beyond putting together aesthetic elements. It's about creating a symbol that tells a story, a graphic emblem that captures the essence of the brand.

To achieve this, we need to understand the company or brand for which we're designing. This understanding doesn't happen by magic or assumption. It's the result of thorough research and an insightful examination of the brand. This could involve direct conversations with the client, going through their brand guidelines, understanding their product or service, and getting a feel for their company culture.

But why is this deep understanding so important, you ask? Well, a logo that doesn't reflect the brand's identity can create confusion and dilute the brand's message. For example, if we're creating a logo for a law firm, a playful and colorful design might not resonate well with their clients who expect professionalism and seriousness.

At the end of the day, we want to design a logo that's not only visually compelling but also a truthful representation of the brand. Conducting proper research before creating a logo design enables us to capture the brand's essence in a unique, memorable logo that genuinely resonates with its audience.

II. Know Your Audience

Designing a logo is a creative adventure, isn't it? But as we're immersing ourselves in fonts, colors, and abstract concepts, it's crucial to keep in mind who we're creating for - our audience. This step is a pivotal part of the proper research before creating a logo design.

Knowing your audience is not just about guessing who might like your logo, but about understanding the people who will interact with it most frequently. These are the customers or clients of the brand. Their preferences, their habits, and even their dislikes can significantly influence how your logo is perceived.

Let's get practical. How can you really get to know your audience? Start by asking the client for their customer personas or demographic details. This information can shed light on age ranges, occupations, cultural backgrounds, even lifestyle choices. Let's say you're designing for a tech start-up whose audience is young, tech-savvy professionals. A modern, sleek design with a tech-forward feel might be just the ticket.

Also, consider conducting surveys or focus groups to get firsthand input. The audience's perception can provide valuable insights, shaping the direction of your design. For instance, if you're designing a logo for a children's toy brand, getting feedback from kids and parents can help ensure the design is both appealing and appropriate.

The key here is empathy – putting yourself in the shoes of the audience and viewing the design from their perspective. Remember, you're not just designing for a brand, but for its audience. A logo that connects with them can significantly enhance their relationship with the brand.

By doing proper research before creating a logo design and truly understanding the audience, you ensure your design isn't just aesthetically pleasing, but also effectively communicates with the people who matter most.

III. Comprehending the Industry and Market Trends

Now, here's an interesting part of our journey into conducting proper research before creating a logo design - comprehending the industry and market trends. It's like stepping into the wild jungle of creativity where trends are born and fade away in the blink of an eye.

As designers, it's essential to keep our finger on the pulse of the design world. Knowing current trends can help inform our work, ensuring it's not just striking and meaningful, but also fresh and relevant. However, don't misunderstand me, I'm not advocating for blindly following trends. Instead, understand them, draw inspiration, but always prioritize the brand's identity and audience preferences.

Industry standards are equally vital. Different industries have different unwritten 'rules' and stylistic norms when it comes to logos. For instance, finance and law firms often lean towards more traditional, professional logos, while tech companies might opt for minimalist, modern designs. Understanding these norms helps us create logos that feel at home within their industry, but remember, it's okay to push the boundaries a bit. Sometimes, a little deviation can help a brand stand out from the crowd.

To keep up with trends and understand industry norms, use online resources like design blogs, industry publications, and social media platforms. Attend webinars and design conferences, if possible. Design platforms like Behance, Dribbble, or Pinterest can also be a goldmine of inspiration and trend spotting.

Remember, comprehension of the industry and market trends is crucial in doing proper research before creating a logo design. It helps us create designs that resonate with the present, are relatable to the audience, and are aligned with the brand's industry. Now, isn't that a win-win-win situation?

IV. Analyzing Competitor Logos

Alright, folks, we're diving deeper into our proper research before creating a logo design. Next up is a step that's not just insightful, but quite fun - analyzing competitor logos. It's like being a detective in the world of design, snooping around to uncover the secrets of successful (and not-so-successful) logos in the market.

In any industry, understanding the competition is crucial. It offers valuable insights into what works and what doesn't, what's overdone, and where there might be a gap that your design could fill. Trust me, this is one of the most rewarding homework you'll do in your design process!

research company logo

So, how can we effectively analyze competitor logos? Start by making a list of direct competitors of the brand you're designing for. Check out their logos - what colors, fonts, and styles are they using? Are they going for a modern, minimalist look or something traditional? How well are their logos received by their target audience?

Note these details down. Identify the strengths and weaknesses in their designs. Maybe you'll spot a cliché being used excessively or discover an innovative design approach that's resonating well with the audience.

This exercise is not about copying what others are doing. Instead, it's about learning from their experience. It helps us avoid common pitfalls, differentiate from the competition, and create a logo that truly stands out.

Remember, by analyzing competitor logos, we ensure our design doesn't get lost in the sea of sameness. Instead, it proudly stands as a beacon of the brand's unique identity. That's the power of doing proper research before creating a logo design.

V. Finding Inspiration

Okay, fellow creatives, let's venture into one of the most exciting aspects of conducting proper research before creating a logo design - finding inspiration. This is where our artistic souls get to frolic, exploring the vast expanse of creativity that exists around us.

Inspiration, as elusive as it may seem, is everywhere. The trick is to keep our creative eyes open. Nature, for instance, is a treasure trove of inspiration, filled with unique shapes, color palettes, and structures. Similarly, art, architecture, and even everyday objects can spark innovative design ideas.

research company logo

Created by Coric Design | https://dribbble.com/shots/18147046-Logo-Design-for-Wasserturm-Cuxhaven-Cafe

It's also crucial to draw inspiration from the design industry itself. Scrolling through design platforms like Behance or Dribbble can expose you to an array of unique, successful logos. Following designers whose work you admire can offer fresh perspectives and creative stimulation.

Books are another incredible source. Titles like "Logo: The Reference Guide to Symbols and Logotypes" or "Logo Modernism" can provide valuable insights into the world of logo design.

Remember, we're not looking to copy here, but to stir up our creative juices, to see possibilities and explore ideas. In fact, it can be a fantastic exercise to draw inspiration from unrelated industries or disciplines, bringing in a fresh twist to your design.

Keep a digital or physical inspiration board where you can save images, color palettes, sketches, or anything else that sparks an idea. Refer back to this during your design process.

In the end, finding inspiration is a vital part of the proper research before creating a logo design. It helps us see beyond the ordinary, pushing our creative boundaries to design a logo that truly shines.

VI. Importance of Sketching and Brainstorming

We've journeyed through understanding the brand, audience, industry trends, and competitor analysis, all vital steps of conducting proper research before creating a logo design. Now let's bring our attention to something more hands-on, a step that marks the bridge between research and creation - sketching and brainstorming.

Sketching and brainstorming is where our research starts taking physical form. It's like the exciting moment when a sculptor first touches clay, giving shape to their creative thoughts.

Sketching is a fantastic way to explore ideas and concepts quickly, without the constraints of software. Grab a pen and paper, and let your creativity flow. It's okay if your initial sketches look rough; this process is about ideation, not perfection. Experiment with shapes, letters, symbols, negative space, anything that comes to mind.

Simultaneously, brainstorming sessions can be an excellent opportunity to bounce off ideas with your team or even with the client. This collaborative effort often leads to unexpected, exciting design directions. Remember, there's no such thing as a 'bad' idea during brainstorming.

Why is this stage so important, you ask? Well, it saves time and effort down the line. By exploring various design directions on paper first, we can identify promising ideas before investing hours perfecting them digitally.

Additionally, brainstorming and sketching provide a sneak peek into your design process, something clients often appreciate. It shows them you're not randomly assembling elements but basing your design decisions on thorough research and thoughtful consideration.

In essence, sketching and brainstorming are indispensable parts of the proper research before creating a logo design, acting as the creative playground where our insights and imagination come together to form the first glimpses of a compelling logo.

VII. Soliciting Feedback and Conducting Surveys

We're nearing the end of our journey through the stages of proper research before creating a logo design, and we've arrived at a critical pit stop - soliciting feedback and conducting surveys. This part is where we take our creative baby out into the world and see how it fares.

Feedback, my friends, is a designer's secret weapon. It offers fresh perspectives, uncovers blind spots, and helps us refine our work. Sharing your design drafts with fellow designers, mentors, or even non-designer friends can be invaluable. They might spot an issue you didn't see or suggest an improvement that elevates your design.

Remember, receiving feedback isn't about defending your work or feeling dejected over criticism. It's about listening with an open mind, considering the viewpoints shared, and using them to improve your design.

research company logo

Created by Deimante | https://dribbble.com/shots/17367120-Exetrix

Surveys, on the other hand, provide a snapshot of how your design might be perceived by the intended audience. It's like a mini-test drive before the actual launch. You can conduct surveys using online tools like SurveyMonkey or Google Forms. Questions can range from what emotions the logo evokes, to how memorable it is, to what improvements the participants suggest.

The insights gleaned from feedback and surveys can be transformative for your design. They add another layer of refinement to your work, ensuring the logo isn't just aesthetically pleasing, but also effective and impactful.

So, don't shy away from seeking feedback and conducting surveys. They're integral parts of doing proper research before creating a logo design, helping us create a logo that not just we, as designers, love, but one that resonates with the audience and successfully represents the brand.

VIII. Revisions and Refinement

Alright, creative souls, we've reached the final leg of our journey into the process of proper research before creating a logo design - revisions and refinement. This stage is where our creative explorations and feedback amalgamate into a polished, compelling logo design.

The art of revision is truly an art in itself. It's not just about fixing issues or making changes as suggested by feedback. It's also about keeping the essence of your design intact while enhancing its effectiveness and aesthetic appeal.

Consider each piece of feedback and survey result. Then, think about how to incorporate the valuable insights without compromising your original design vision. Perhaps it's a subtle change in the color scheme, a slight tweak in the font, or a more pronounced modification of a shape or symbol. Remember, revisions are not an admission of failure, but a testament to your commitment to excellence.

research company logo

Created by Gert van Duinen | https://dribbble.com/shots/19046049-WIP

The refinement process is also an opportunity to ensure every element of your logo aligns with the brand's identity and resonates with the target audience. Check that your color choices are spot-on, your typography speaks the brand's language, and your imagery or symbols appropriately represent the brand's personality.

These steps of revisions and refinement may take time and require patience, but trust me, the outcome is worth it. A well-refined logo not just catches the eye, but also lingers in the mind, and ultimately, wins the heart.

So, as we wrap up our discussion on conducting proper research before creating a logo design, let's remember that the journey from an initial idea to a final, polished logo is a journey of exploration, learning, and fine-tuning. And it's this journey that leads us to create truly amazing logos.

As we conclude our journey, let's take a moment to appreciate the profound impact of proper research before creating a logo design. It's a creative expedition, unraveling insights about the brand, the audience, industry trends, and competitors. It offers a playground for sketching, brainstorming, and seeking inspiration. The process further nurtures our designs through feedback, surveys, revisions, and refinement. Ultimately, it leads us to create logos that are not just visually appealing but also deeply meaningful and resonant. So, fellow designers, let's embrace this journey and make the magic happen, one logo at a time!

Algernon Pharmaceuticals to Move Forward with Psychedelic Drug DMT Stroke Research Program as its Lead Asset

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Algernon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (the “Company” or “Algernon”) (CSE: AGN) (FRANKFURT: AGW0) (OTCQB: AGNPF), a Canadian clinical stage pharmaceutical development company, is pleased to announce that it plans to move forward with its intravenous formulation of its AP-188 (“N,N-Dimethyltryptamine” or “DMT”) stroke research program as its lead asset, after having sold its Ifenprodil research program for USD $2M cash and a 20% common share equity position in Seyltx, a U.S based private drug development company, on March 27, 2024. Seyltx plans to initiate an Ifenprodil multi-center Phase 2b placebo-controlled chronic cough study in CY2024.

Algernon established Algernon NeuroScience (AGN Neuro), a wholly owned subsidiary, to advance the research and development of the DMT stroke program in 2023.

AGN Neuro has completed a feasibility study and has finalized its clinical trial design for a 40 patient Phase 2a DMT Stroke study. AGN Neuro is the world’s first company to investigate DMT for the treatment of stroke and its ability to promote neuroplasticity in the healing of brain injuries. The Phase 2a human stroke trial will study an intravenous sub-psychedelic dose of DMT in patients who are hospitalized after having suffered an acute ischemic stroke.

“Investigating neuroplasticity in a clinical setting, as a potential new treatment approach for ischemic stroke patients, is a new and promising area of research,” said Christopher J. Moreau CEO of Algernon. “Algernon is a global leader in this important area of research, and we look forward to further advancing the stroke program through our planned Phase 2a DMT Stroke study.”

Phase 2a Stroke Study Design

Subjects with a confirmed diagnosis of ischemic stroke will be randomized in blinded fashion to receive either DMT or placebo. The primary outcome measure of the study will be safety, and information will be gained on measures of efficacy including preservation of brain tissue, motor recovery, depression and numerous biomarkers linked to the pathophysiology of stroke.

The decision to advance into a Phase 2 study was based on positive data from the Company’s Phase 1 trial conducted at the Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR) in Leiden, Netherlands. This study showed that plasma levels of DMT associated with neuroplasticity in preclinical studies could be achieved with a prolonged, 6-hour infusion of DMT at a dose which did not cause a psychedelic experience. The amount given exceeded the human equivalent of the dose used in preclinical studies in rats which demonstrated neuroprotective effects.

About Algernon Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Algernon Pharmaceuticals is a Canadian clinical stage drug development company investigating multiple drugs for unmet global medical needs. Algernon Pharmaceuticals is the parent company of a private subsidiary called Algernon NeuroScience, that is advancing a psychedelic program investigating a proprietary form of DMT for stroke and traumatic brain injury and has an active research program for chronic kidney disease.

Community connections strengthen linguistics prof’s research, teaching

Friday, April 05, 2024 | by Cathy Majtenyi

Brock Associate Professor of Linguistics Jean Ntakirutimana and Sofifran Executive Director Fete Ngira-Batware Kimpiobi stand next to a display case embedded in a wall containing a variety of African objects.

‘Subjugated knowledges,’ a term coined by the French philosopher Michel Foucault, refers to information coming from people in underrepresented groups that is discounted by a powerful majority, which claims that these perspectives are inadequate or insufficiently developed.

Brock University linguist Jean Ntakirutimana is passionate about drawing out subjugated knowledges, both within the context of his own research and as part of wider projects with the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

“Community members are brimming with a wealth of talents and knowledge, always available to anybody willing to listen and learn,” says the Associate Professor. “I am always open to any opportunity to work with them, and my research has greatly benefited from the profuse generosity of community partners.”

Ntakirutimana is an affiliated member of Brock’s Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI). He is among some two dozen researchers, government organizations, community groups and others working together to draw out the subjugated knowledges of Niagarans of African descent and foreign-born persons.

The project, which is in its very early stages of planning, aims to collect information in three key areas: childhood and growing up; health literacy; and identity, connections and belonging.

“Voices that have been long excluded from the dominant knowledge framework will be heard through this initiative,” says Ntakirutimana, who shared the basic research outline during a talk at the St. Catharines Public Library Feb. 28.

“These voices will not only enrich public discussion and create original scholarship on a wide range of issues but will also contribute to insights and practical tools organizations can use to develop culturally responsive services and interventions,” he says.

Ntakirutimana says tapping into subjugated knowledges and understanding people’s lived experience enriches his own linguistics research. This is the case even if the subject matter of this community-based information “is not necessarily my area of specialization,” he says.

As an example, Ntakirutimana – who is a French language expert – refers to the experience of Francophone immigrants settling in the Francophone community of Welland.

“They speak French, but they speak other languages, too, and their varieties of French may not be the same as the local French dialect,” says Ntakirutimana.

“The Francophone immigrants are already struggling because they’re a minority in a majority of English speakers,” he says, adding that some newcomers also don’t feel they fit in with the Welland Francophone community, and they aren’t able to receive services in their mother tongue.

The children, who are also facing challenges in the new environment, often end up acting as translators during their parents’ medical or legal appointments, forcing them to take on an adult role, says Ntakirutimana.

“My strong connections with community partners allow me to approach immigrant language issues with an interdisciplinary lens. It provides a deeper insight into my research by reminding me that it should never be conducted in a vacuum, but should rather incorporate lived experience, from real people living in an intersectional ecosystem.” he says.

Ntakirutimana has had many years of working with almost a dozen community groups, involving them with the co-creation of knowledge and co-presenting research results at conferences and other events.

In particular, he has a strong connection with Sofifran , a Welland-based, non-profit community organization created in 2007 by French-speaking immigrant women living in the Niagara region and originating from various parts of the world.

Throughout the years, Ntakirutimana has co-organized more than 20 events with Sofifran, including conferences, exhibitions, performances, book launches, and book fairs, among others.

He also formed local and national partnerships when creating two experiential learning projects related to the 2022 Canada Games: the French Documentation and Terminology course he taught; and a French Internship Course .

When working with the community, Ntakirutimana says he is guided by the Community-Based Participatory Research principles, where community members are regarded as equal knowledge holders and creators, and should be actively involved in any research initiative involving them, according to the ethos of “Nothing about us without us,” he says.

'We exist': New Middle Eastern or North African census category helps community members feel seen

Protesters.

Swara Salih, a 32-year-old Kurdish American, has been reluctantly ticking “white” on federal forms his whole life. But that’s not what he sees when he looks in the mirror.

“My entire life I’ve been a brown kid, I’ve had darker skin than my white friends,” Salih told NBC News. “I was very culturally confused in that way as a kid, like, ‘What am I supposed to be?’ I’m not white, I’m not Black, I’m not Latino.”

The new Middle Eastern or North African category announced by the Office of Management and Budget on Thursday will help shed the cloak of invisibility draped on members of the community, like Salih, for decades, experts say.

The addition of this category to the OMB’s standards for race and ethnicity for the first time in U.S. history means that an estimated 8 million Americans who trace their origins to the Middle East and North Africa will no longer have to choose “white” or “other” on federal forms, including the U.S. census.

“We were forced to identify as something we were not, and in a way that erased the community and erased any data on the community,” said Abed Ayoub, the national executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), one of the first advocacy groups to push for an identifier for MENA Americans. “We’re a different community and we have not been able to — since we’ve been here — get an accurate picture of who we are.”

Census 2024.

The new identifier will have six subcategories beneath it that include Lebanese, Iranian, Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi and Israeli, which were selected to represent the largest population groups in the U.S., an OMB spokesperson said. The identifier will also include a blank space where people can write in how they identify if their ethnicity isn’t one of the subcategories.

While advocacy groups don’t think the geographical addition goes far enough to capture the diversity of the region, they say it’s a long-awaited step in the right direction.

Undercounted, underrepresented and unnoticed

The lack of an identifier for Americans from the Middle East and North Africa has left them undercounted, underrepresented and unnoticed in U.S. society.

MENA Americans can trace their origins to more than a dozen countries, including Egypt, Morocco, Iran, Turkey and Yemen. The region is racially, ethnically and religiously diverse, and people from there can be white, brown or Black, as well as identify with an ethnic group, like Arab, Amazigh, Kurdish, Chaldean and more. Migration from countries in the region to the U.S. began in the late 1800s and picked up in recent decades largely because of political turmoil, according to the  Migration Policy Institute .

The largest MENA group in the U.S. is Arab Americans, according to data collected by advocacy groups. The new identifier came days before the start of Arab American Heritage Month on April 1.

Tariq Ra'ouf, 33, a Palestinian American, described feeling like his identity was being erased when having to tick “white” on job applications.

“When I’m filling them out it’s like, ‘This is ridiculous,’ because I’m not white,” Ra'ouf said. “And then, if I say that I’m white, I might lose out on opportunities at companies who are looking to hire culturally and ethnically diverse employees. Who knows how many applications people might have missed because they are forced to put down a race that doesn’t represent them.”

The MENA and white communities are different in many ways, including culturally, socioeconomically and politically. A MENA identifier will help federal agencies collect crucial data that will in turn improve policy decisions, said Maya Berry, the executive director of the Arab American Institute (AAI). The lack of an identifier has meant that research on the community has largely been anecdotal, and it led to its members losing out on federal resources such as health and social services.

“That category is the way that we address that our community has been rendered invisible in the data for decades,” Berry said. “There’s a direct harm when communities do not have the kind of information that is needed about them, anywhere from the issues that we saw during the Covid pandemic , to the way congressional districts are drawn, to health research about our folks, to protecting our civil rights.”

Even the 8 million MENA Americans that advocacy organizations estimate live in the U.S. may be an undercount, Ayoub says.

“We’re going to have clear data on the number of folks from the region that are in this country, where we live — everything from our spending habits to health issues to education,” Ayoub says of the addition of the identifier. “In this day and age, you really need data to be a strong advocate for your community. And this will allow for us to get a better picture of who our community is.”

Ra'ouf is excited he won’t have to misrepresent himself anymore.

“I think it’s about time,” he said. “It’s a little frustrating that it took so long to get to this point. But mostly, I think it’s just exciting because we’ll be able to truly get a bigger sense of how many of us there are in this country, and get better representation.”

A decadeslong effort

Getting a MENA identifier on the census has been a decadeslong, back-and-forth effort by groups such as the ADC and AAI.

The Census Bureau had already tested the category in 2015 and found   it yielded data that provided better insight into the MENA community. The category was abandoned when the Trump administration came to power.

The OMB announced the long-awaited update more than a year after the Federal Interagency Technical Working Group on Race and Ethnicity Standards recommended adding the identifier as a new category . This is the first time the OMB has updated the standards for race and ethnicity since 1997; prior to this change, there were five categories for data on race and two for ethnicity: American Indian or Alaska Native; Asian; Black or African American; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; White; Hispanic or Latino; and non-Hispanic or Latino.

The OMB instructed all federal agencies “to begin updating their surveys and administrative forms as quickly as possible,” according to a statement. Federal agencies have five years to bring all data collection into compliance with the updated standards, which means Americans can begin seeing this update in documents within that time.

Berry says we may see a “ripple effect” in which nongovernmental institutions, such as hospitals and universities, adopt the OMB’s new standards.

“Let’s say I’m a hospital and I want to apply for federal research grants. I would absolutely make sure that I was matching federal standards,” Berry said. “I can’t imagine a single aspect of our society — companies, health institutions, universities, corporations — that’s not going to want to be aligned with federal standards.”

Not a perfect solution

Experts warn that the category is not the exact solution they were advocating for, and could lead to another undercount of the diverse community in the U.S.

Countries such as Somalia and Sudan are included in the 22 countries that make up the Arabic-speaking world, according to the ADC , and many hailing from those nations identify as Arab as well as African. But the OMB’s new category does not include a way for Afro-Arabs to identify themselves, a sticking point for experts who weighed in on the change.

“Let’s say I’m Sudanese — I check MENA because I identify ethnically within the MENA category and I write ‘Sudanese’ in the space,” Berry explained. “I am not sure that they will still be coded within MENA, because the code for Sudanese now is Black or African American.”

Prior to the existence of a MENA category, many MENA Americans would tick “other” on the census, write in their identities and be tallied into the white community anyway — Berry worries the same will happen to Afro-Arabs.

“And just like before, we didn’t want to be exclusively white. Moving forward, we can’t have a category that excludes Afro-Arabs from being part of MENA if that’s how they want to identify,” Berry said.

While people are free to tick more than one box, it’s not clear how hyphenated MENA identities will be tallied, Berry said.

Ayia Almufti, a 25-year-old Iraqi American, disagrees with the use of the term "Middle East" for the category, which was coined and used by European officials in the 19th century for the region in accordance with its proximity to Europe.

"I prefer SWANA (Southwestern Asia and North Africa) any day," she said, adding that the new category is still an upgrade.

Ayoub also warned of not including Armenian Americans in the MENA category, many of whom were forced to relocate to countries in the Middle East during the Armenian g enocide and may identify ethnically as Middle Eastern.

A way to have avoided this would have been to let the Census Bureau, which conducts the statistical research on race and ethnicity, formulate the category question based on its findings, said Berry.

In a statement , the Census Bureau said it follows standards set by the OMB and that it will develop plans to implement it in censuses and surveys, like the annual American Community Survey and the decennial census.

Both Berry and Ayoub say they will continue to advocate for better representation of the community.

For now, Ra'ouf hopes this update will give future generations what he didn’t get growing up.

“The feeling of actually being able to check off what you actually are is a feeling that I think none of us really have gotten to experience,” Ra'ouf said. “And I think for the kids, and everyone growing up and filling out those boxes in the future, I hope that it will add some sense of pride.”

Even though it’s not a perfect category, Salih says it beats having to identify as white without benefiting from the privilege that it offers, especially against the backdrop of anti-Arab and Islamophobic sentiment .

“I think that it allows us to assert our identities in a society which has by and large wanted to shun us, to ban us from coming here,” Salih said. “But now we’re able to say more officially, ‘No, we are here. We exist.’”

Online Elections in Russia

Ahead of the State Duma election on September 19, 2021, Russia just  tested  its remote electronic voting system. (1) While the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation (CEC) is preparing the report about the results of the test, election monitors say Russia's electronic voting system is a black box.

Technological and legal embedding of controversial e-voting

This year, remote e-voting will be used in  six  Russian regions, including Moscow, according to the CEC. The Commission will examine  nine  applications from regions (other than Moscow) that wish to participate in the pilot project. Nationwide e-voting might be introduced as soon as  2024,  when the next presidential election is supposed to take place. So, this year's online elections should be seen as a further step towards the digitalization of Russia's elections, which started two years ago.

Remote e-voting was tested for the first time in 2019 at the election of deputies to the Moscow City Council. The following year, during the all-Russia vote on constitutional amendments which took place from June 25 to July 1, 2020, residents of Moscow and the Nizhny Novgorod region were able to cast their votes electronically. Thus, in September 2020, online voting was tested in the pre-election to the State Duma in the Kursk and Yaroslavl regions.

Legal entrenchment of electronic e-voting into Russia's election system took place just before last year's trial runs when President Vladimir Putin signed a law on remote voting in elections on May 23, 2020. With that, "remote electronic voting" was introduced at the federal level for the first time, and  defined  as "voting without voting using a paper, using special software." Another important innovation of this law is the ability to collect signatures for candidate nomination through Gosuslugi – the Public Services Portal of the Russian Federation. With that, Russia has paved the way for a transformation of the election system into a process based on information and communication technologies (ICT) and the internet.

This is of course a very progressive step, in line with current global trends and part of an even stronger shift to the digitalization of more and more aspects of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the idea of remote electronic voting is highly  controversial  and many countries remain cautious about introducing it. On the one hand, there are obvious advantages – for instance, for voters abroad and for voters with disabilities; in general, e-voting provides citizens with a convenient way to cast their vote without visiting polling stations, which could counter declining turnout worldwide. So, an important benefit of digital technology in elections is cost  savings  from reduced costs of production and distribution of ballot papers, as well as reduced poll worker time.

On the other hand, several studies and assessments show that internet voting does not necessarily  attract  new voters but rather serves as a "convenient" tool for existing voters. Moreover, nationwide use of e-voting could lead to a digital divide, excluding voters without internet access and those less familiar with the internet. For many people, e-voting is a "black box" due to its complexity. This could lead to reluctance to participate in elections or to reduced trust in the system as a result of insufficient transparency.  So, the argument for e-voting due to reduced costs is contested: the expensiveness of internet voting becomes evident when the additional costs for both purchasing and maintaining e-voting systems, as well as for education campaigns for electoral authorities, observers, and voters are taken into account.

However, the probable main concern regarding e-voting stems from its technological nature, which poses various new security  risks , such as its high dependence on technology and its vendors,  possible malicious activities,  including phishing and social engineering. The risk of manipulation of e-voting is twofold: by hackers from outside, but also by insiders with privileged access to the system – election officials and system administrators have high level authorization to access information and equipment and may intentionally or accidentally compromise election results. Many analysts suggest careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks of introducing such digital technology in legally binding elections.

'Sovereign' blockchain for Russia's election

The blockchain technology which Russia is introducing and testing for its voting promises to shift power from the central electoral authorities to voters and to make elections more secure and transparent. A blockchain voting system is based on peer-to-peer technology and encryption which allows secure registration information and transmission of ballots over the internet and it provides a decentralized and anonymized system of voting and counting results. Developers of the Russian technology also  promise:  "The vote itself is anonymized and encrypted. The electronic ballot only exists on the user's screen until the vote is over. To preserve the secrecy of the vote, the ballot information is not saved in the user's browser or on the admin server."

However, the Kremlin's ever  tighter grip  over the internet and ICT, as well as the regime's increased power in managing elections and keeping control over ballot access, raise concerns that technology will be misused to achieve the desired results rather than properly serve voters. What's more, independent  IT experts warn  that using blockchain technology can change election results in ways that are "undetectable, or, even if detected, would be irreparable without running a whole new election"; the technology still has serious security vulnerabilities that could undermine the integrity of the election system. An  opaque expert group  that advises the CIK RF on the new technology and the lack of transparent monitoring procedures raises additional mistrust towards the new online voting.

In Russia, an electronic voting system has been developed by Kaspersky  Lab , the  notorious  anti-virus software vendor; it has turned to developing the election software based on blockchain after there was a serious drop in sales followed by allegations from the US and Europe of spying and close ties to the Kremlin. Another developer of a technical solution of e-voting is the state-backed major telecom provider  Rostelecom together with Waves Enterprise , a Russian developer of a blockchain platform for corporate and government use.

Despite the aforementioned promise of the developers, the use of technology developed by Moscow's Department of Information Technologies together with Kaspersky Lab in the elections to the Moscow City Council 2019 revealed several major problems. The private key for decoding the votes was easily  accessible  online and made it possible to track how people voted. Moreover, independent observers  noticed  significant differences between the offline results and those submitted electronically in favor of candidates supported by the ruling party; a very limited  possibility  of technical control by observers and cases of violation of voting secrecy and coercion to vote.

So, during the all-Russia vote in 2020, the blockchain system created by Kaspersky Lab revealed several weaknesses. The website for online voting went  offline  in the first minutes after the start of voting. The passport data of voters was not sufficiently protected and was available  online  which showed that some voters were recorded in the system twice while others were able to vote with invalid passports. Moreover, people were able to vote  twice , at polling stations and then through the online system.

However, despite these serious weaknesses of the system, Moscow will continue  its cooperation with Kaspersky Lab  which will again develop its own voting system for the city that will probably be used at the State Duma election in September. For other regions, Rostelecom will provide its blockchain-based voting system that it deployed for the pre-election in September 2020. Back then, IT specialists  reported  that the system was not tested enough and there were possibilities for the authorities to manipulate the results. So,  observers  said, the system was non-transparent and did not guarantee verification of the integrity of the vote count.

As for the recent testing on May 12–14, Grigory Melkonyants, head of the election monitoring association Golos  said  in comparison to the previous election, Russia's e-voting is getting even more opaque: now observers are not allowed to download blockchain transactions from the website for online voting and cannot see how the system works from the inside and therefore are not able to evaluate the integrity of the elections. Observers also reported that the new system was not  available  for accepting applications from voters for several hours. Some voters  were rejected  as the system could not verify their personal data or because they were "not selected for the test by a random sampling." Stanislav Andreichuk, Co-Chair of Golos,  confirms  that four months before the most important election in five years, the e-voting system is not ready.

In addition to these issues, the whole online voting system in Russia could hardly be seen as decentralized: voting takes place through state servers by registering accounts on the state portal such as Gosuslugi (or mos.ru in Moscow) and the blockchain network is controlled by the authorities or state-backed companies.

An additional threat for elections

Russia's advanced track record of election result falsifications over the past decade has dramatically harmed its democracy, especially the institution of election. It's highly doubtful that remote electronic voting will help rebuild trust in elections. On the contrary: given the state-controlled technical infrastructure and expected results of the previous tests, e-voting will lead in fact to even more difficult access for independent election monitoring and further deny Russian citizens the free and fair elections they deserve.

(1) To take part in the test from May 12 to May 14, any citizen of the Russian Federation could submit an application on the  Gosuslugi.ru  – the Public Services Portal of the Russian Federation. This is a widely used centralized online infrastructure for any kind of state or municipal service. According to its own data from 2019, Gosuslugi has 103.2 million registered users, out of the country's population of about 145 million.

The ECRI's Leading Economic Index — the economic indicator with a near-perfect track record — has started to decline over the last year, Achuthan said, speaking in a webcast with Rosenberg Research on Wednesday.

The decline in the index has started to level out in recent months. Still, a fall in the index has been followed by a recession every time over the last 120 years, he noted, with the exception of when the index declined after World War II.

"That, while is not a guarantee of a recession, it certainly is an indication that there's a lot of vulnerable to shocks," Achuthan warned. "More often than not, it really speaks to cyclical vulnerability."

That's compounded by other signs of an increasingly sluggish US economy. GDP is set to slow dramatically over the first quarter, with the Atlanta Fed forecasting expansion of just 2.5% over the most recent three-month period. Meanwhile, the US Coincident Index, a growth measure that includes GDP, jobs, and retail sales data,  has trended near 0% over the last two years, plunging from a peak of around 20% in 2021.

Hiring conditions are also starting to weaken dramatically. Though jobs growth looks strong on the surface, the unemployment rate has ticked steadily higher, notching its highest level in 2 years in February.

Meanwhile, the ECRI's Cyclical Labor Conditions index, a measure of "cyclical labor impulses" in the economy, has plunged nearly 50% over the past few years. That steep decline mirrors falls seen prior to the 2001, 2008, and pandemic-era recession, historical data from the ECRI shows.

Hiring strength seems to lie in non-discretionary areas of the market — which typically occurs before a recession, Achuthan said, as consumers prioritize needs over wants. Job growth in education and health rose around 4% last year, though job growth in every other sector trended near 0%, ECRI data shows.

"Without that, probably would have been in recession," Achuthan said of non-discretionary hiring growth.

According to Achuthan, those warning signs point to a "tug-of-war" in the economy, with growth in the US being pulled back and forth between cyclical weakness and external support, such as stimulus spending and labor hoarding during the pandemic. If those supports fade, that could "spell some trouble," he warned.

Other economists have sounded the alarm of a coming downturn, especially as the inflation could remain sticky and the Fed risks keeping rates higher for longer. According to top economist David Rosenberg, a recession is four times more likely to happen than an economic expansion, and a downturn with steep job losses could come sometime before the end of the year.
