“Publish or perish”. We've all heard this expression referring to the need academic, but especially PhD students and young academics have to make their research results public in order to promote and improve their contractual position, consolidating their careers. Nevertheless, it is also well‐known that this is a long‐distance race conditioned to the capacity to publish the research findings.

This means that students whether undergraduate, postgraduate or enrolled in a PhD programme need to develop their research knowledge from the very begging in order to refine their writing skills, paying attention to a large list of details and requirements which may vary from one situation to another. Indeed, academics invest innumerable hours and resources in writing their research results to succeed when submitting them to a peer‐reviewed journal. Therefore, it is not surprising that planning and writing a research project is often considered by inexperienced students as a challenging, time‐consuming and a demanding task. Yet, despite all these constraints, writing up the findings in a form that can be published and read for others, constitutes a very rewarding effort.

Emerging from the necessity to instruct students in acquiring the appropriate skills and abilities to effectively complete a research project, many courses are now incorporating a research module in their syllabuses as a mean to improve students' probabilities to succeed when doing so.

The editorial industry has also echoed these concerns and demands in the recent years, leading to the flowering of a large number of books and manuals addressing this issue (i.e. Bryman and Bell, 2011 ; Cooper and Schindler, 2011 ; Creswell, 2009 ; Flick, 2011 ; Sekaran, 2010 ). One of the most compelling books tackling this problem is Doing Research in Business and Management: An Essential Guide to Planning Your Project , written by Saunders and Lewis and published in 2012 by Pearson Education Limited.

Saunders and Lewis are experienced professors in teaching research methods in the fields of Business and Management. Indeed, they have published several books offering guidelines for students that need to conduct and produce a competent piece of research. According to the authors it is now fourteen years since their first book on research methods was printed. In 2009 the fifth edition was published ( Saunders et al. , 2009 ) and due to its popularity and good acceptance among academics and students they are now presenting this new and updated approach, providing a detailed coverage of all the relevant aspects (both theoretical and empirical) that may face students when carrying out a research project.

Combining their years of academic practice and their vast practical experience, with this book Andersen and Lewis aim at providing, in an accessible and friendly manner, some assistance to students and early career individuals who need to undertake an assessed research project by means of a written project report. This way, Doing Research in Business and Management provides a comprehensive and holistic overview of how to develop quality research in the fields of business and management, offering a detailed coverage of the relevant research approaches and methods used in these disciplines, and bringing together the essential components of the process of writing up a research project.

The authors take the reader through all the major stages involved in this process, introducing the different contexts and purposes that may guide a research project, as well as highlighting the key methods, strategies, tactics, programmes and processes that are recurrent in a management and business research context.

One noteworthy aspect of this book is that it takes extraordinary care to focus the reader on the logic and techniques of research methods using an accurate but simple language, that is, bearing in mind that the targeted audience is inexperienced students on undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in business, management or related disciplines, that may not yet be familiar with the language and style required by the scientific community. Therefore, employing a concise, highly accessible style and a logical structure, this book enables students that face for their first time the challenge of writing a research project to understand the practical relevance of research methods on business and management research. It also discusses the interrelationships of theoretical and empirical research, how these apply to practice, and the most recurrent software packages available in the market.

An important feature of this book is its clear structure and ease of reading. Furthermore, within each chapter, the use of illustrations, contemporary examples and key research terms placed in definition boxes to demystify their meaning, helps breaking up the text and brings it to life due to the practical perspective adopted. Certainly, it is presented in a logical and structured manner, organising the content in eight chapters that correspond to eight stages of the process of writing a research project.

Although the chapters follow a sequential order, the authors have written them in such a way that they stand alone, so any chapter in isolation make sense of it. Therefore, it is not necessary to read this book progressively from Chapter 1 through to Chapter 8, but allow readers to select those chapters that really match with their needs.

Each chapter follows a similar structure, starting with a brief summary that gives some ideas of the content and the approach adopted to afford the topic discussed (“Why read this chapter?”). Also each chapter contains a set of different examples to illustrate, from a practical point of view, some of the points addressed in the chapter (“Research in practice”). Every chapter ends with a “Thinking about” section, where the content is summarised in the form of concise and succinct bullets, and where authors make some suggestions on how to reinforce the contents learned.

Revising each chapter individually, Chapter 1 starts with some preliminary considerations on what is meant by a research process. Conducting research is something more than writing the findings using a formal language and a specific structure. It means to embark on a journey of discovery, where researchers have the chance to express their skills and resourcefulness demonstrating their abilities to carry out research projects of high quality.

Given these initial thoughts, Chapter 1 is then entirely devoted to the first matter academics come across: the selection of the research topic. As any process, a research project starts with the choice of a research theme. This is an issue entailing an extraordinary significance as the student/researcher should have to live with and live for, perhaps for a considerable period of time. Thus, it is important that the research topic matches with his/her expectations and motivations, contributing to the development of his/her personal skills and strengths, rather than being imposed by a supervisor.

The chapter follows with the main difficulties students face when choosing the research topic, and suggests novel ways in which to generate ideas, including for instance the use of relevant literature in the field to identify gaps that may constitute new research avenues. Discussions with friends and lecturers or drawing a concept map, are also listed as intermediate steps that may help filtering ideas, moving from the general to the specific question.

In the latter part of the chapter the authors focus on how to turn an idea into a research topic. At this point Sanders and Lewis recommend the use of the Russian doll principle ( Clough and Nutbrown, 2008 ), consisting of breaking down from the original statement to something which strips away all the complicated layers and obscurities until the heart of the question, in a similar fashion as the Russian doll is taken apart to reveal a tiny doll at the centre (p. 21).

Chapter 2 focuses on the subject of the literature review. A literature review is a very hard and time‐consuming process, as it should discuss relevant previous work and provide a comprehensive review of the major findings in the current area of study. This section is mandatory for any research project as it allows the researcher to demonstrate the need for a new study and that he/she has the appropriate background. Moreover, knowing what is known, it comes out easier to state what is still unknown, facilitating the identification of the gaps in the current understanding of the field, and making it simply to justify the research question(s) underlying the research and the context in which the study is going to be performed.

Thus, in this chapter the authors explain what constitutes an effective critical literature review, giving some ideas on how to start writing it and how to organise ideas and findings in a coherent logical argument.

A careful selection of the references to support statements and previous research findings is essential. In this sense, the authors make explicit differentiation of the main types and sources of literature available. A detailed description of the process of searching for obtaining the relevant literature is then provided, emphasising the use of an abstract to assess likely use of an article.

In accordance with the Harvard College Library (2006) , the authors also suggest that while reading, it is extremely important to take notes, summarise findings, compare information and contrast results. Likewise, they emphasise that a good literature review can lead to interesting insights into possible ways of collecting and analysing data.

Chapter 3 is concerned with how to manage the research process, focusing on four main aspects. First, questioning how to manage respondents, that is, how to access organisations for data collection. Here a set of six strategies are listed. Second, the authors focus on how to manage oneself in terms of keeping up the motivation, organising time and resources, and keeping in touch with individuals who may provide insightful comments on the work in progress. The relationship with the supervisor is believed to be indispensable, as he/she is expected to give advice at every stage of the process. But in order to succeed in this relationship, students are asked to report in a regular basis the partial results throughout the entire length of the project. A fourth issue deals with the management of the university context, that is, how to fit with the regulations, specific norms and other requirements imposed by the university. Paying special attention to the assessment criteria is also essential in order to guarantee that the research outcomes fulfil the requirements.

This chapter ends with a section covering the subject of research ethics, pointing out the key ethical principles and responsibilities that should be taken into account and that apply to all stages of any research process. This topic has perhaps been underexplored in the management and business literature; however it seems that it is now increasingly entering into the agendas of many academics ( Academy of Management, n.d. ; Frechtling and Boo, 2012 ; Payne, 2000 )).

Chapter 4 begins with a definition of what is meant by secondary data. A full definition is given, differentiating between qualitative and quantitative data and the possible transformation processes data may have suffered. Figure 4.1 (page 86) exhaustively summarises potential forms of secondary data according to their nature.

In this chapter the authors discuss the potential of using secondary data as a method for accessing large datasets and saving time and money, as they can often be found in the public domain as a result of the growth of the Internet. Nevertheless, secondary data also presents some pitfalls. For instance the authors emphasise that data are not always value‐neutral or only meet research needs partially. Although data available are rich and allows the creation of reliable variables, it is relevant to question whether the selected variables represent the core influential factors that match with the exact requirements of the study. The chapter ends with a list of some gateways to secondary data sources that are relevant for its broad scope and content.

Chapter 5 is entirely devoted to research strategy and design. Using the research onion metaphor presented in the authors' previous work ( Saunders et al. , 2009 ), Saunders and Lewis illustrate the different stages that conform the research process. Techniques and procedures for data collection and analysis are placed in the centre of the onion. As we move away from the centre we found the intermediate layers, where the strategies and choices have to be selected. Finally, the outer layers consider the research philosophies and approaches that embody the research. Building on this approach, the different layers of the onion are presented and complemented with readable examples. Definitions are also given, clarifying some terms that may be unknown for the freshman student, for instance, differences between inductive and deductive approaches, and alternative types of studies (exploratory, descriptive and explanatory).

This chapter also includes a section devoted to the description of different strategies that students may use in their attempt to answer their research question(s). Some useful insights are given on the use of experiments, surveys, case studies, action research methods, ethnography studies, grounded theory, archival research methods or the combination of any of the above. Although the aim of this book is not to in‐depth in the technical specifications behind these strategies, Saunders and Lewis provide the reader with the main features characterising each method. Further information on these approaches may be accompanied with the reading of the specific literature on each particular topic, such as Yin (2009) for case studies; the book of Berg and Lune (2008) with two chapters entirely focused on action research methods and ethnography studies; Corbin and Strauss (2008) and their approach to the grounded theory; or Ventresca and Mohr (2002) studying archival research methods. Correspondingly, the books of Miles and Huberman (1994) and Marshall and Rossman (2010) offer an exhaustive review of all aspects related to qualitative data analysis.

Chapter 6 pays attention to the methods used to collect data. The uses of different techniques and statistical procedures to obtain a sample that satisfies the research requirements, or how to draft an effective questionnaire, are some of the issues addressed in this chapter.

Part of this chapter is devoted to the importance of using a pilot test with a small group of respondents in order to corroborate the validity of a test/questionnaire before launching it to the whole sample. The chapter ends with some guidelines on how to successfully conduct interviews (either semi‐structured or unstructured), giving some examples on how to ask questions, how to interact with the respondent and how to prepare the material needed. A transcription of a potential interview is also provided.

The subject of Chapter 7 is about getting data ready for analysis, the use of different techniques for the analysis, and how to interpret the results obtained.

The chapter begins with the particularities of different types of data, namely quantitative and qualitative. Then the authors address each sort of data individually, first focusing on how to prepare and analyse quantitative data, and second, qualitative data. Essential statistical terms are defined, providing the reader with the basic instruments and techniques. Examples on how to interpret descriptives, correlation coefficients, associations between variables, predict cause‐effect relationships, or how to transcript an interview are provided, facilitating the understanding of those terms that the reader may not yet be familiar with. Screenshots of the most commonly used software packages for processing data are also introduced (i.e. SPSS, ATLAS.it, NVivo).

Writing an effective research proposal is a vital part of the research process. In the eighth and last chapter, the authors provide some insightful comments on the writing style students should adopt when compiling their research proposal and suggest some of the criteria against which the quality of the research project may be assessed.

Although each research process has its own particularities and layout, to a great extent, the content of a research project tends to follow a standardized structure: the title; an abstract; an introduction section presenting the research question(s); a review of the literature ending with the formulation of the hypotheses to be tested and the statement of the research objectives; a method section detailing how the research will be carried out; a discussion of the results; the conclusions and limitations of the study; and a list of the cited references. By way of conclusion, two research proposals are presented exemplifying all the aspects and issues discussed throughout the book.

Although the content of this book is quite predictable for a book of this type, it enables an effective learning process, representing a very useful guide for students planning or undertaking a research project or a dissertation in the fields of business and management. Jasmina Berbegal‐Mirabent (PhD) received the MS degrees in Industrial Engineering and Industrial Scheduling, both from UPC BarcelonaTech (Spain) in 2008 and 2009, respectively. She is now working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Management at the UPC BarcelonaTech. She has been a Visiting Research Associate at the Institute of Education at the University of London. She has published her works in international and peer‐reviewed journals such as The Service Industries Journal , Management Decision , Journal of Technology Management & Innovation , Intangible Capital and Economía Industrial . She has recently been named Book Review Editor of Management Decision , and she is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management . Professor Dr. Michael Blankenagel  is a senior lecturer at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He specializes in Corporate Performance Management and Research Design. He supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate research projects and bachelor and master theses.

This study aimed to map a scientific production on Sustainable Development through a bibliometric analysis. The methodological procedures were delineated by a quantitative approach, the research involved data taken from Scopus scientific database. For the searches in this database, the keywords “sustainable development” and “sustainable development” were used within a period of 10 years, from 2009 to 2018. The searches identified 7,841 publications related to the theme, an average of 784 articles published per year.The year with the largest number of publications was 2018, with 1279 publications. The author with the largest number of publications was researcher Razman, M. R., with 17 articles published.Regarding the areas of publication of articles, the ones that stood out in relation to the number of articles published were: Social Sciences, Environmental Science, Energy, Business, Management and Accounting and Engineering, with respectively 3,844, 3,051, 1,551, 1,398 and 1,093 articles. published. Among the journals, the ones with the highest number of publications were: Sustainability Switzerland, Journal of Cleaner Production, Sustainable Development, with respectively 391, 186 and 145 publications. Regarding educational institutions, the highlights regarding the number of articles published were for the Chinese Academy of Sciences, The Bucharest University of Economic Studies and University Kebangsaan Malaysia. The country with the largest number of publications in the area - United States, with 850 publications. Note that most of the publications were written in English, with a total of 7,091 publications in English.

Our study’s primary purpose is to deploy the bibliometric method to analyze the related literature. Research background: Sustainability in organizations is a business approach to creating longterm value by taking into consideration how a given organization operates in the ecological, Oeconomia Copernicana, 14(1), 11-45 12 social, and economic environments. The organizational practices that eventually lead to sustainable development are referred to as sustainable organization management. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to examine the current trends in sustainable organization management over the time period of 2015-2022, highlight the emerging themes in this study area, and provide guidance for further research in the field. Methods: This paper uses bibliometric meta-data analysis to present an analysis of current trends in sustainable organizational management. An in-depth analysis of a sample result of 619 papers from the Web of Science core collection was conducted with the use of biblioshiny, the R-Programming Language package, and the VoS Viewer software. A global representation of concepts was created using the relational directory network visualization technique based on VoS Viewer software. Keyword cooccurrence relationships were determined; relational techniques were used to visualize bibliographic coupling density to identify thematic areas with little research; and overlay visualization bibliometric techniques were used to identify new and old research themes. Findings & value added: Emerging themes are modeling, tourism, and perceptions. Motor theme areas in the field of study include performance, impact, and management. The paper concludes that the study area of organizational sustainability management is still in its early stages and has great research potential, such as Africa as a study area, despite the fact that there have been few or no research findings. Future research should examine the role of technology and innovation in promoting sustainable practices within organizations and clarify how well an organization can survive global competition.

Bibliometrics offers quantitative analytical techniques with which to study the development and growth of research in this area. The information used for the present study was retrieved from the SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, and A&HCI (Thomson Reuters) databases. A Better Approach to Mergers and Acquisitions

Far more mergers succeed today than in the past. Here’s how to post a win.

Twenty years ago, consultants at Bain & Company published a book that explored a dispiriting reality: Although companies spent billions of dollars a year pursuing deals, 70% of mergers and acquisitions wound up as failures.

But today those odds have inverted. According to new research by Bain, over the past 20 years firms have done more than 660,000 acquisitions, worth a total of $56 trillion, with deals reaching a peak in 2021. And close to 70% of them have succeeded. Even among the roughly 30% that were less successful, many of the deals still created some value.

What has changed? This article presents four explanations for the turnabout.

The book, Mastering the Merger , was released in the wake of a series of corporate marriages that ended badly, including AOL and Time Warner, Daimler and Chrysler, and Citicorp and Travelers. This wasn’t a new phenomenon. Academic studies dating back to the 1970s had concluded that most acquisitions don’t play out the way the investment bankers promise. Even among deals that appeared profitable from investors’ perspective, Bain’s surveys of executives showed that many fell short of the internal projections made to justify the purchase.

For the third year in a row, MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have assembled an international panel of AI experts that includes academics and practitioners to help us gain insights into how responsible artificial intelligence (RAI) is being implemented in organizations worldwide. Last year, we published a report titled “ Building Robust RAI Programs as Third-Party AI Tools Proliferate .” This year, we continue to examine organizational capacity to address AI-related risks but in a landscape that includes the first comprehensive AI law on the books — the European Union’s AI Act . To kick things off, we asked our experts and one large language model to react to the following provocation: Organizations are sufficiently expanding risk management capabilities to address AI-related risks . A clear majority (62%) of our panelists disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement, citing the speed of technological development, the ambiguous nature of the risks, and the limits of regulation as obstacles to effective risk management. Below, we share insights from our panelists and draw on our own observations and experience working on RAI initiatives to offer recommendations on how organizations might leverage organizational risk management capabilities to address AI-related risks.

Tech Advances Are Outpacing Risk Management Capabilities

Many of our experts cited the speed of AI-related technological developments as testing the limits of organizational risk management frameworks. As Stanford CodeX fellow Riyanka Roy Choudhury contends, “The rapid expansion of AI, particularly generative AI, has exceeded the operational capabilities of most organizations, [resulting in deficient] AI risk mitigation strategies.” Land O’Lakes CTO Teddy Bekele notes that “the overall preparedness to tackle AI-related risks is insufficient, mainly due to the fast-paced advancements in AI that outstrip the development and implementation of effective risk management practices.” In addition to AI’s fast-evolving capabilities, its pace of adoption is also challenging organizations. As AfroLeadership’s Belona Sonna explains, “AI systems are among the fastest-growing applications in the world. The associated risks are therefore equally dynamic.”

While Sameer Gupta, chief analytics officer at DBS Bank, and Linda Leopold, H&M Group’s head of AI strategy, argue that organizational risk management capabilities need to “keep pace” with the “rapid evolution of AI capabilities” and “the speed of tech development and the spread of usage,” they also acknowledge the challenge of doing so in practice. Leopold observes that “even for organizations that do have a solid responsible AI program in place, keeping up with the speed of development and continuously addressing new risks requires effort.”

We asked ChatGPT to respond to our provocation, and it also recognized that improving management approaches to AI-related risks is an ongoing process. ChatGPT’s response:

“Many organizations are bolstering risk management to tackle AI-related risks. This involves assessing potential biases, privacy breaches, and operational vulnerabilities inherent in AI systems. Enhanced strategies encompass proactive monitoring, robust data governance, and compliance frameworks. Despite progress, ongoing adaptation is vital to effectively mitigate emerging AI risks and ensure sustainable innovation.”

“The technology is advancing so rapidly that there is no way to do anything ‘sufficiently,’ including expanding risk management capabilities to address AI-related risks. While we know many of the risks, I imagine a number of those to come are still unknown. The technology will keep us all on our toes for years to come because it’s developing in nanoseconds.”

The situation is even more challenging for smaller organizations, often due to their lack of expertise or resources to devote to this function. As Ya Xu, head of data and AI at LinkedIn, explains, “Establishing good risk management capabilities requires significant resources and expertise, which not all companies can afford or have available to them today.” Researcher Nanjira Sambuli similarly observes, “Micro, small, and medium enterprises that form the bulk of organizations in many economies may not yet have the capacity [for] dedicated risk management teams or the resources to use third-party risk management services.” Chevron’s chief data officer, Ellen Nielsen, agrees: “The demand for AI governance and risk experts is outpacing the supply,” she says.

Ambiguity Is a Significant Challenge

Ambiguity about the nature of AI-related risks is testing the limits of existing risk management capabilities, especially in the absence of clear and established standards for identifying, understanding, and measuring these risks. While some organizations are adapting existing risk management capabilities (such as data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, ethics, and trust and safety), others are attempting to build new AI-specific capabilities.

Cold Chain Technologies CEO Ranjeet Banerjee observes, “I do not think there is a good understanding today of AI-related risks in most organizations.” MIT professor Sanjay Sarma offers a similar observation: The “massive range of risks seems to be leading to analysis paralysis [such that] companies have not successfully captured the risk landscape.” Beyond the wide range of known risks, Leopold notes that “new risks keep emerging as technology and its areas of application evolve.” Choudhury adds, “A significant obstacle lies in comprehending and quantifying the potential risks associated with AI, particularly within smaller organizations.” As a result, Yan Chow, global health care lead at Automation Anywhere, says that “it may take AI to understand its own risks.” (Some organizations are, in fact, heading in this direction .)

A key challenge, Sambuli explains, is determining “how AI-related risk is markedly different from other risks arising from the use and diffusion of digital and emerging tech.” Shilpa Prasad, head of commercialization at LG Nova, argues that “the risks posed by AI systems are in many ways unique,” while David Hardoon, CEO at Aboitiz Data Innovation, contends that “the majority of risks are not AI-specific, such as data governance.” He adds, “In order to expand risk capabilities, there is a need to expand, review, and understand specifically what are the AI risks that differ from non-AI risks.” David Polgar, founder of All Tech Is Human, explains why that is: “AI, in particular generative AI, can have a tendency to paralyze appropriate risk responses because it is often viewed through a mystical newness lens rather than as a new technology that poses classic dilemmas around copyright, data protection, and false advertising.”

“The rapid expansion of this technology, along with its increasing integration into various business and social operations, often surpasses the current risk management capabilities of organizations. This is due to several factors, including the lack of widely accepted standards for AI risk assessment, a shortage of experts knowledgeable in both AI and risk management, and the underestimation of the complexity and potential impact of the risks associated with implementing AI systems.”

For some companies, another challenge is the lack of clear and consistent AI risk management frameworks. TÜV AI.Lab CEO Franziska Weindauer points to “missing frameworks and guidelines developed by knowledgeable actors in the field to help [organizations] implement a risk management system.” Similarly, for ForHumanity founder Ryan Carrier, the “failure to include diverse input and multistakeholder feedback in the risk management process [results in] limited perspectives on risk identification and a failure to disclose residual risk.” According to Andrew Strait, an associate director at Ada Lovelace Institute, “We are still in an era of testing and trialing different methods — but they are not proven to be effective.” But things may be changing.

The Role of Regulation Remains to Be Seen

Our experts are divided on the role of AI regulations. EnBW chief data officer Rainer Hoffman observes, “With the introduction of the European AI Act, which mandates risk management for high-risk applications, organizations are beginning to acknowledge the importance of AI-related risk considerations.” University of Helsinki professor Teemu Roos adds, “Companies will need to invest in compliance [with the AI Act], not unlike the introduction of GDPR in 2018.” OdiselA cofounder Richard Benjamins says that “with upcoming regulations, especially in the European Union with the AI Act, many organizations are expanding their risk management capabilities to address AI-related risks” but cautions that “the speed at which this is happening differs significantly by organization.” Unico IDtech researcher Yasodara Cordova reminds us that “it required nearly a decade of regulations for organizations to begin enhancing their risk management capabilities for privacy.”

Others are less optimistic about the efficacy of regulations. UN undersecretary general Tshilidzi Marwala contends that “the maximization of profit through AI is more incentivized than addressing AI-related risks.” Simon Chesterman, a professor at the National University of Singapore, says, “For companies, the fear of missing out often dominates.” And Carrier explains, “Individual players pay lip service to the idea of risk management [but] actively operate to subvert … policy and standards.” As a result of these concerns, Data Privacy Brasil founding director Bruno Bioni argues, “The most pressing issue is whether we, as a society, are democratically expanding our risk management capabilities.”

Recommendations

For organizations seeking to leverage their organizational risk management capacity to address AI-related risks, we recommend the following:

1. Identify first principles first. Because AI risks are dynamic and rapidly evolving, organizations should adopt a nimble approach based on high-level guiding principles and guardrails that can be applied or adapted to specific applications or advancements in AI technology rather than addressing them on an ad hoc basis.

2. Stay agile and keep learning. Organizations should recognize that collective learning on AI risks and mitigation approaches is ongoing, and their own approaches will need to rapidly evolve alongside everyone’s growing understanding.

3. Increase investments in risk mitigation tools. Organizations should seek to identify where current risk mitigation tools might address AI-related risks, including data governance and privacy, cybersecurity, ethics, and trust and safety, as well as other compliance functions, and invest in expanded risk management capabilities where existing functions fall short. Because AI risks can emerge from within the organization and outside it, risk mitigation approaches should be designed to address both types of risks.

4. Act now. While the EU’s AI Act may be the only comprehensive AI law at present, we can bet it won’t be the only one. Moreover, there is no AI exemption to the laws on the books. Given that it can take several years to put in place a comprehensive AI risk management program, organizations cannot wait for regulations to develop a deliberate and flexible approach to AI risk management.

A look at Black-owned businesses in the U.S.

More than one-in-five Black adults in the United States say owning a business is essential to financial success, according to a September 2023 Pew Research Center survey . While Black-owned businesses have grown significantly in the U.S. in recent years, they still make up a small share of overall firms and revenue, according to our analysis of federal data.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to examine the characteristics of Black-owned businesses in the United States. The analysis relies primarily on data from the 2022  Annual Business Survey  (ABS), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics.

The survey – conducted annually since 2017 – includes all non-farm U.S. firms with paid employees and receipts of $1,000 or more in 2021. Firms are defined as businesses “consisting of one or more domestic establishments under its ownership or control.” Majority business ownership is characterized in the survey as having 51% or more of the stock or equity in the firm. The Census Bureau counts multiracial firm owners under all racial categories they identify with; Hispanic firm owners may be of any race. Read more about the ABS methodology .

In 2021, there were 161,031 U.S. firms with majority Black or African American ownership , up from 124,004 in 2017, according to the latest estimates from the Annual Business Survey  (ABS), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Science Foundation. Black-owned firms’ gross revenue soared by 43% during this timespan, from an estimated $127.9 billion in 2017 to $183.3 billion in 2021.

Despite this growth, majority Black-owned businesses made up only about 3% of all U.S. firms that were classifiable by the race and ethnicity of their owners in 2021. And they accounted for just 1% of gross revenue from all classifiable companies that year. By comparison, in 2021, roughly 14% of all Americans were Black.

As has  long been the case , White majority-owned businesses made up the greatest share of classifiable firms (85%) and their revenue (93%) in 2021. About one-in-ten classifiable firms (11%) were majority-owned by Asian Americans, and no more than 7% had majority ownership by someone from another racial and ethnic group.

The Annual Business Survey classifies businesses as “majority Black- or African American-owned” if a Black owner has at least 51% equity in the firm. The same standard holds for business owners of other racial and ethnic backgrounds. The U.S. Census Bureau counts multiracial firm owners under all racial categories they identify with; Hispanic firm owners may be of any race. 

Not all U.S. businesses are classifiable by the race or ethnicity of their owners. In 2021, about 4% of all businesses in the U.S. were  not  classifiable by the race and ethnicity of their owners – though these firms accounted for 61% of total revenue. Ownership and revenue figures in this analysis are based on the roughly 5.7 million firms that  were  classifiable by the race and ethnicity of their owners in 2021, most of which are smaller businesses.

How many workers do Black-owned businesses employ?

Black or African American majority-owned firms provided income for roughly 1.4 million workers in 2021. Their annual payrolls were estimated at $53.6 billion.

Still, most Black-owned firms tend to be smaller businesses. Two-thirds had fewer than 10 employees in 2021 ; 13% had 10 to 49 employees and just 3% had 50 or more. Another 16% reported having no employees. (The ABS determines employment size by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period.)

What’s the most common sector for Black-owned businesses?

By far, health care and social assistance. About 45,000 of the roughly 161,000 U.S. companies with majority Black or African American ownership, or 28% of the total, were part of this sector in 2021.

Looked at a different way, 7% of  all  classifiable U.S. businesses in the health care and social assistance sector were majority Black-owned that year .

Other common sectors that year included:

  • Professional, scientific and technical services (comprising 14% of all Black-owned businesses)
  • Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services (8%)
  • Transportation and warehousing (8%)
  • Retail trade (6%)
  • Construction (6%)

Where are Black-owned businesses located?

Most Black or African American majority-owned businesses (87%) are located in urban areas. Just 5% are in rural areas – that is, places with fewer than 2,500 inhabitants, under  the Census Bureau’s definition .

Some of the most populous states also have the greatest number of Black majority-owned businesses. Florida had 18,502 such businesses in 2021, California had 15,014 and Georgia had 14,394.

Black majority-owned businesses made up the greatest  share  of all classifiable firms in the District of Columbia (15%), Georgia and Maryland (8% each).

Who are Black business owners?

  • They’re more likely to be men than women. Some 53% of Black-owned firms in 2021 had men as their majority owners, while 39% had women majority owners. Another 8% had equal male-female ownership. The gender gap is larger among classifiable U.S. firms overall: 63% were majority-owned by men in 2021, 22% were majority-owned by women and 14% had equal male-female ownership.
  • They tend to be middle-aged. Roughly half (49%) of Black or African American business owners who reported their age group were ages 35 t0 54 in 2021. Another 28% were 55 to 64, and just 7% were younger than 35.
  • A majority have a college degree. Among owners who reported their highest level of education completed, 27% had a bachelor’s degree and 34% had a graduate or professional degree in 2021.

What motivates Black entrepreneurs?

When asked to choose from a list of reasons why they opened their firm, about nine-in-ten Black or African American majority owners who responded said an important reason was the opportunity for greater income; a desire to be their own boss; or wanting the best avenue for their ideas, goods and services. Balancing work and family life (88%) and having flexible hours (85%) were also commonly cited.

For most Black or African American majority owners, their business is their primary source of income . Seven-in-ten of those who reported income information in 2021 said this was the case.
