Are you ready to earn your online nursing degree?

Writing a thesis presents an opportunity for graduate students to conduct scholarly inquiry, with the potential of publishing their finished paper. A thesis requires nursing students to identify a problem in nursing, and review academic literature while developing advanced research skills. Thesis advisors and committees guide students from the proposal phase to the final oral defense, a process that spans about two semesters.

Not every nursing student is required to complete a thesis. Some nursing programs offer a non-thesis option, in which candidates complete a final capstone project or oral examination on topics such as nursing theories and clinical practices.

The thesis process and requirements vary by school. Ohio State University’s master of science in nursing program’s final examination includes oral and written portions.

Choosing Your Nursing Thesis Topic

Nursing students must choose a thesis topic before they begin the research and writing process, typically within the first two terms of nursing school. A solid thesis must present an original argument, manageable research scope, and worthy academic pursuit. A thesis advisor or research professor will help to guide each student through the process of choosing a topic.

In the conceptual phase, candidates research potential thesis topics based on their interests within their nursing specialty. Students may start with a broad topic such as obesity and weight management, depression, or cardiovascular disease. To narrow their thesis argument, graduate students might focus on racial or ethnic groups, socio-economic issues, or current events.

After settling on a topic, students draft and submit a thesis proposal to an advisor or committee chair. Once this proposal has been approved, students can begin the formal work on his or her approved thesis topic.

While graduate students must complete a thesis to fulfill the requirements of a master’s degree in nursing, the thesis process also offers a chance for future nurses to immerse themselves in current academic literature and collaborate with fellow graduate students, faculty, and professors. A thesis can also serve as the foundation for doctoral studies. A thesis at the doctoral (PhD) level is called a dissertation.

Completing Your Nursing Thesis

Brainstorming a thesis topic begins as early as the first semester of a master’s in nursing program. The formal thesis process, which typically spans multiple terms, does not take place until the student’s final year, usually during the last term.

Thesis requirements vary by school, and students must meet specific deadlines and take prerequisite courses beforehand. At the University of Texas-Houston’s School of Nursing , candidates take a public health class before they submit a thesis proposal.

Future nurses work under the guidance of a thesis committee and advisor. The experience of writing a thesis trains students in original investigation, data collection, implementing research design, and public speaking. Candidates also learn to flex their analytical thinking skills and master a specific area of nursing as they develop the ability to analyze and draw conclusions through data.

At a program’s conclusion, students submit their thesis as a bound manuscript or electronic file. In addition to submitting a written report, students orally defend their final thesis in front of the committee. Many graduates also submit their manuscripts for publication.

Presenting Your Nursing Thesis

Graduate students generally orally defend their proposal and present their completed thesis in front of their committee. This committee also includes the thesis mentor, a faculty member specializing in the nursing discipline of their scholarly inquiry. There are generally 3 total committee members on a thesis committee.

Fellow graduate students or consultants outside of the college may attend presentations, if the process is open to the public. Otherwise, the thesis defense remains a private session, with students presenting their findings. The oral examination of the thesis takes up to one hour, but can last longer depending on how many questions the committee has for the student.

During that time, the committee evaluates the thesis based on how the research experience has shaped the student’s graduate education and the findings’ significance to the nursing field. When the exam concludes, the committee either accepts or rejects the thesis defense.

How is a Nursing Thesis Graded?

Nursing schools rely on each committee to formally grade each product in the thesis process. Some graduate nursing students may receive a letter grade, while other nursing schools adhere to a “pass” or “fail” policy.

To determine a grade, the committee assesses the thesis based on set criteria. Committee members look at the project’s key components, including the statement of purpose, literature review, research methodology, analysis, findings, and implications. The process and grading criteria for the thesis process can be found in the school’s graduate handbook. Most of these handbooks are published online for student review.

The thesis must identify significant issues or service gaps in nursing and present them in a concise and coherent fashion. Candidates must support all findings and analysis by research and explain the implications for healthcare.

The oral defense also factors into the grade. The committee grades the defense based on the quality of the student’s presentation, taking into consideration if the student spoke clearly and presented a logical and well-organized argument.

What is the Difference Between a Nursing Thesis and a Capstone?

A nursing thesis and a capstone demonstrate the student’s comprehensive knowledge and educational journey. Graduate students in a non-research track may have the choice of completing a clinical project. Doctoral of Nursing ( DNP ) students complete a capstone project.

Graduate-level nursing students work on an original scholarly inquiry during their thesis, while undergraduates recap their cumulative learning experience. The thesis process, which includes completing nursing courses and writing a proposal, takes place over the entire program.

What is a dissertation.

Final year students are required to complete a large piece of work for their degree or professional qualification. For undergraduates this is known as a dissertation, final year project or major independent study. Postgraduates will normally complete a thesis.

The Masters of Sciences degree (MSc) is becoming increasingly popular with nurses and provides a useful stepping stone into advanced nursing roles and/or Doctoral level study (e.g. PhD or Professional Doctorate). For nursing students, the most daunting and time consuming part of their MSc is often the dissertation component. Students usually do a structured literature review or undertake a small piece of research. However, the rules around student research in the NHS are changing and may affect some nursing students completing MSc dissertations.

What is a nursing dissertation? The nursing dissertation usually involves a large written piece of coursework (6-16,000 words) based on an independent study at the end of a University MSc programme. Students are supported during their dissertation by an academic supervisor to undertake research or a review. For nursing students, the MSc dissertation is an opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest and to study the topic in great detail. The MSc dissertation is a demanding assessment and can involve many months of effort and a high level of independent study. Some of the challenges faced by students include working independently, effectively working with their supervisor, having to meet deadlines, and producing high quality academic material. In addition, many students also have other commitments (e.g. employment, child care) and/or have additional support needs (e.g. dyslexia). These factors can make the MSc dissertation both demanding, but also extremely rewarding.

Student research in the NHS Nursing students often want to undertake a research study in their place of work, but all research needs to have ethical approval and students working in the NHS will have to make sure they are eligible to complete their research in the NHS. The guidance on student research in the NHS changed and the new guidance is available online via the Health Research Authority (HRA) . The HRA changes came into effect in September 2021 and affect those completing research for the main purpose of achieving an educational qualification (e.g. Degree, Masters, or Doctorate). The main changes include new eligibility criteria, which changes the type of students who can complete research in the NHS. The new guidance states undergraduate students, for example, will no longer be able to complete research involving the NHS and that Doctoral students studying Health and Social Care related topics will be able to complete research in the NHS ( full guidance ).

The guidance is slightly more confusing for MSc nursing students. Not all MSc students will be able to apply for NHS ethical approval and some types of student MSc students will not be allowed to do research in the NHS. Fortunately, nurses will be one group of students who can conduct research in the NHS, but certain rules apply, nurses need to be studying a Health and Social Care course and the University department supporting the student also needs to be active in Health and Social Care research. The HRA have produced a helpful toolkit for students or supervisors , to help them determine whether their research will be eligible to apply for NHS Research Ethics approval under the new guidance.

Alternatives to student research in the NHS Given the complexity of nursing dissertations and the challenges faced by many nursing students, it is prudent to consider the different options available when completing an MSc dissertation. Being flexible and creative will give nursing students the greatest chance of success when completing their MSc dissertation.

Dissertation options. • Research involving the NHS (check eligibility using student research toolkit ) • Non-research activity in the NHS (e.g. service evaluation, audit, a discussion with R&D may still be needed). • Research activity not involving NHS patient, staff, or resources – student participant study or using organisations or charities, social media. • Literature review (e.g. systematic review). • Write research protocol for future study. • Produce anonymous case report (consent/approval needed).

Other challenges for nursing dissertations Another challenge is the increasing numbers of students completing MSc qualifications. Each year more nurses are seeking MSc qualification, which is excellent for patient care and the nursing profession. However, increasing student numbers and the needs to complete a dissertation can create pressure on the NHS and make it difficult to provide the necessary support for growing numbers of students. With increasing numbers, nursing students can find themselves struggling to come up with an original idea and some popular topics can become over-researched. For example, recently the number of students wanting to study COVID-19 has grown rapidly.

It is also common for nursing students to focus on particular groups of people and/or recruitment pathways. For example, the growth of MSc dissertations has led to an increase in the amount of research being conducting on students, which raises concerns about whether students are being overly burdened by invitations to participate in research. The growth in the numbers of nursing students studying MSc qualifications has also put pressure on finding appropriate academic supervisors, who can support students during their studies. It is important Universities balance the increased demand for MSc study, whilst also maintaining quality for students. Innovative strategies used by Universities include flexible academic supervision, using online methods, incorporating group supervision, and also changing the format of dissertations to better reflect journal publications. It is clear that traditional dissertations may need to adapt in the near future to be fit for purpose and to support the large number of students and the changes to research ethics in the NHS.

To advance to candidacy for the PhD, students are required to write a candidacy proposal  (Step 1)  and pass an oral examination  (Step 2)  as evidence of the student's ability to synthesize knowledge and apply research methodologies. The student should consult with his/her Academic Advisor to identify a candidacy chair and committee prior to completion of course work. It can be helpful to seek the advice of the student's assigned academic advisor to prepare for and consider options for selection of committee members.

Criteria for Chair and Members of Candidacy Committee

A candidacy committee consists of at least three faculty members in the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. The chairperson for the candidacy committee is to be selected by the student. The chairperson of the student's candidacy committee must hold the rank of Assistant Professor or above; be tenured or on the tenure-track; have served on a minimum of two candidacy committees at the FPB School of Nursing or a comparable institution; and have considerable expertise in the student's content and/or research area. Expertise is determined by the faculty member's authorship of research publications in refereed journals and recognition by peers as an expert in the student's content and/or research area. The student must consult with the Chair to identify and select two additional members of the FPB faculty with research doctorates to serve as candidacy committee members. Selection these two members should be based on faculty expertise in the student's substantive area of study, theoretical and conceptual expertise, or methodological expertise. The PhD Program Director must approve the composition of the candidacy committee and candidacy proposal topic.

Step 1: Written Candidacy Proposal

This step examines the student's ability to create a written argument to support a scientific study. The candidacy proposal will include the following three chapters: Chapter 1 Introduction, Chapter 2 Literature Review, and Chapter 3 Methods. The written candidacy proposal is in essence the written component of the candidacy exam. The student, who is required to be registered for NURS 671 for 3 credits, is supervised in proposal development by his/her Candidacy Committee Chair in consultation with the candidacy committee members. The written candidacy proposal should be based on the research problem the student intends to explore for his/her dissertation research. However, the written candidacy proposal should demonstrate the depth and breadth of knowledge the student has obtained through PhD course work, synthesized, and now is applying.

For example, in Chapter 1 (Part 1 if using manuscript option) of the candidacy proposal, the student wants to demonstrate in writing an understanding of the philosophical, theoretical and conceptual issues that have been considered and his/her rationale for the choices s/he has made. In Chapter 2 or Part 2 if manuscript option, the student should demonstrate his/her knowledge of substantive literature relevant to the population and problem of interest, critically analyze the state of knowledge, and demonstrate ability to write an integrated literature review. Chapter 3 or Part 3 if using manuscript option should demonstrate the student's knowledge regarding methodological issues demonstrating in writing what the design, measurement, analyses, and ethics issues are with rationale for the student's methods choices.

Step 2: Oral Examination

Note : Some candidacy committees may choose to schedule a pre-examination meeting in advance with the respective student but it is not required.

The student must have  completed required course work and the research practicum , and have a GPA of 3.0 to schedule the oral candidacy exam. In addition, the members of the candidacy committee must have read the written candidacy proposal and agreed that the student is ready for the oral candidacy exam.

The oral examination requires the student to demonstrate the knowledge s/he has obtained as result of completing the PhD curriculum.

The oral examination should test the depth and breadth of the student’s knowledge and comprehensive ability to synthesize and apply that knowledge.The content foci of the oral candidacy exam are:  1)  the nursing discipline (theory, research, profession);  2)  research methods and statistics;  3)  review and evaluation of literature concerning content/competing theories/competing methods (includes disciplinary literature and relevant literature from other disciplines including historical perspective); and  4)  articulation of the above. The examination is the culmination of a research proposal development process guided by a candidacy committee. Participation in the oral exam is limited to the student and the student's candidacy committee members.

Advancement to Candidacy

Advancement to candidacy status is based on candidacy committee recommendation signed by the PhD Program Director. The student must have completed his/her research practicum and submitted an updated Program of Study Plan for Graduate Studies to take action to advance the student to candidacy status

A student who fails the candidacy examination may be permitted to retake the examination following completion of additional course work and/or revision of the proposal and/or a written response to questions from the committee. The respective candidacy committee has the responsibility to determine which option should be selected for a specific student and to inform the student of the course of action verbally and in writing. The candidacy committee chair will inform the PhD Program Director of the course of action the committee has determined in writing

A student who is refused admission to candidacy may not undertake further study within the School of Nursing for credit toward the Ph.D. With the approval of both FPB and the School of Graduate Studies, such a student may take a limited number of additional courses to complete a Master's degree or enter the graduate program in another department.

Dissertation Process

Note:  The following guidelines are for use within the School of Nursing. They are congruent with School of Graduate studies guidelines. Dissertation Requirements

All candidates for the Ph.D. degree must submit an electronic dissertation as evidence of their ability to conduct independent research at an advanced level. The dissertation must represent a significant contribution to existing knowledge in the student’s field, and at least a portion of the content must be suitable for publication in a reputable professional journal or as a book or monograph. Students must prepare their own dissertations. Joint dissertations are not permitted. The dissertation must conform to regulations concerning format, quality, and time of submission as established by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Research work connected with a dissertation is to be carried out under the direct supervision of a member of the university faculty selected by the student in consultation with departmental faculty and approved by the chair of the department.

Criteria for Chair and Members of Dissertation Committee

• Each doctoral student is responsible for becoming sufficiently familiar with the research interests of the School of Nursing faculty to choose in a timely manner a faculty member who will serve as the student’s research Advisor. The research Advisor is expected to provide mentorship in research conception, methods, performance and ethics, as well as focus on development of the student’s professional communication skills, building professional contacts in the field, and fostering the professional behavior standard of the field and research in general.
• The research Advisor also assists with the selection of at least two other School of Nursing faculty to serve as members of the dissertation advisory committee. At a minimum, the dissertation defense committee must consist of a minimum of four members of the university faculty, including the advisor/chair, the two nursing members and at least one whose primary appointment is outside the student’s program, department or school.
• The committee is appointed by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon recommendation of the PhD Program Director in the School of Nursing.
• The student’s dissertation Advisor must be a member of the dissertation advisory committee and serves as chair. The chair of the committee must be a Case Western Reserve University tenured or tenure-track faculty member in the School of Nursing. Any tenured or tenure-track Case faculty member, and any full-time Case faculty member whose primary duties include research who is authorized to serve on a Ph.D. dissertation committee by the school of nursing, may serve on a Ph.D. dissertation committee.
• Any appropriate outside researcher may serve on a Ph.D. committee upon approval by the Dean of Graduate Studies. A petition with the rationale for the request must be presented to the Dean along with the proposed member’s curriculum vitae.
• Under special conditions, a former faculty member whose time of leaving the university has not exceeded 18 months may be approved as a voting university member by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Written Research Proposal

Following successful advancement to candidacy, the student will revise the written candidacy proposal in consultation with his/her dissertation committee members. This document then becomes the written dissertation research proposal. The student in consultation with his/her dissertation committee will set the date and time for oral defense of the dissertation research proposal. Please be aware that students are required to present a copy of their proposal to all  committee members at least  three weeks prior to their oral candidacy exam and proposal defense.

Dissertation Research Proposal Defense

Before beginning dissertation research, the candidate must defend his/her proposal. The dissertation research proposal defense is a separate meeting, activity, and focus from the oral candidacy exam. It is specific to the proposed research study which will be the respective student’s dissertation research. Thus the defense questions and discussion specifically focus on the conceptualization and methods of the proposed study.

The dissertation research proposal defense is done in the presence of a committee consisting of three nursing faculty and one faculty member from Case Western Reserve University, but whose appointment is outside of the School of Nursing. The purpose of this defense is to present and defend the significance, design, methods, and contribution of the proposal research and to address the committee's questions related to the line of inquiry. Upon successful defense of the dissertation research proposal, the student can submit IRB applications and begin the research once IRB approval(s) have been obtained. The dissertation chair and committee members will continue to supervise the student’s implementation and completion of the dissertation research.

Throughout the development and completion of the dissertation, members of the dissertation defense committee are expected to provide constructive criticism and helpful ideas generated by the research problem from the viewpoint of their particular expertise. Each member will make an assessment of the originality of the dissertation, its value, the contribution it makes, and the clarity with which concepts are communicated, especially to a person outside the field. The doctoral student is expected to arrange meetings and maintain periodic contact with each committee member. A meeting of the full committee for the purpose of assessing the student’s progress should occur at least once a year until the completion of the dissertation.

Progression of NURS 671 Proposal Development

Proposal development includes three chapters (parts: introduction, review of the literature, and methods). During NURS 671, students need to discuss with their adviser the type of dissertation format. The types are the traditional 5-chapter parts) dissertation or the manuscripts option (4-5 parts). See webpage for details for the dissertation manuscript option. Three credits of NURS 671 (proposal development) are required. These credits are to be taken all at once. However, if more time is needed to complete the written proposal and oral candidacy exam, additional credits can be taken in 1 credit increments in subsequent semesters. Table 1 includes activities suggested to be addressed in NURS 671.

Some other suggestions to facilitate the progression of NURS 671:

• Ongoing discussions of conceptual and methodological ideas with adviser during PhD coursework are important, especially during NURS 530 and NURS 531.
• Students will likely take NURS 671 with other classes but it can also be taken alone.
• Communication with chair during NURS 671 is essential. Plan to meet or provide written work weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, in agreement with chair.
• If predoctoral standing is used the student should complete their candidacy "early" in the semester in which they begin NURS 701.
• Graduate Students Predoctoral Standing document with the date of candidacy on the form in the space indicated
• School of Nursing form for scheduling the candidacy exam - with day, time, room
• Approval of topic and committee form
• Completion of research practicum form
• Review the Predoctoral Standing document fro CWRU Graduate Studies (Access here ).

Progression for NURS 701 Dissertation

Students should be advised of the following activities for progression during dissertation credits (18 required credits) (see Table 2). The suggestions below are a guide only and will ensure that students meet and do not exceed the minimum of 18 credit hours required for the dissertation.

Please note:

• NURS 701 Credits must be taken over a minimum of 2 semesters; students must be enrolled in NURS 701 during the semester of their final defense.
• Once a student enrolls in dissertation credits (NURS 701), the student must be enrolled continuously in a minimum of 1 NURS 701 credit (not including summer).
• Students should plan to distribute their NURS 701 credits across their dissertation phase. If the student will not defend their dissertation within 2 semesters, it is advisable to save some 701 credits.
• Students unable to meet the graduation deadline for May graduation may complete their final defense by the last day of spring classes and can participate in May graduation ceremonies but will receive their diploma in August.

Final Oral Examination: Defense of Dissertation

Each doctoral candidate is required to pass a final oral examination in defense of the dissertation. The examination may also include an inquiry into the candidate’s competence in the major and related fields.

• The defense must be scheduled with the School of Graduate Studies  no later than three weeks  before the date of the examination.
• The chair of the examining committee should give approval to schedule the defense when the written dissertation is ready for public scrutiny.
• The candidate must provide to each member of the committee a copy of the completed dissertation  at least three weeks  before the examination so that the committee members have an opportunity to read and discuss it in advance.

Please note that these guidelines differ from those described in the School of Graduate Studies handbook–the dissertation document is to be submitted sooner (at least  three weeks  in advance rather than two weeks in advance) for students in the School of Nursing.

Scheduled defenses are made known through on-campus publication, and any member of the university may be present at that portion of the examination pre-designated as public by the chair of the dissertation defense committee. Others may be present at the formal defense only by invitation of that chair.

It is expected that all members of the dissertation defense committee be present at the defense. Exceptions to this rule: a) must be approved by petition to the Dean of Graduate Studies and only under extraordinary circumstances, b) no more than one voting member can ever be absent, c) the absent member must participate through real-time video conferencing at departmental expense; however, if such video conferencing is not available, the absent member may participate through telephone conferencing; and d) the student must always be physically present.

The dissertation defense committee is responsible for certifying that the quality and suitability of the material presented in the dissertation meet acceptable scholarly standards. A student will be certified as passing the final oral examination if no more than one of the voting members of the committee dissents.

Special Instruction for those using the Manuscript Option

PhD students choosing the manuscript option to the traditional dissertation should plan to configure it into "Chapters" for the final submission through the electronic process. Chapter 1 should consist of an introduction to the two or three manuscripts that follow. Each manuscript will comprise a chapter. A final chapter should summarize the foregoing manuscripts and provide recommendations for future research, practice, education, policy, etc. For example:

What is a dissertation?

It is the final step of a PhD program, and the culmination of a student’s doctoral studies.

“The dissertation is a source of pride for doctoral students,” Dinah Manns, PhD, faculty chair at Capella University, says. “The dissertation is often a compilation of academic and practical knowledge, and in many cases, it can be the student’s first publication.”

Here, Manns explains the content and format of this important piece of scholarship.

From student to scholar

The major objective of any doctoral program is to assist a student in becoming an independent researcher, and a dissertation is a large part of that. “Not all doctoral programs require a dissertation, but all PhD programs do,” Manns notes. “Dissertation work varies by program.”

Initial coursework helps narrow down the research topic and develop it into something that will add to the body of knowledge in the chosen field. Sometimes the research contributes something entirely new to the field, and other times it expands or deepens previous studies.

By the time the doctoral coursework is finished, the topic should be selected and ready for formal research. At this point the student develops a proposal, which encompasses the research plan and methodology as it pertains to the selected topic.

At Capella, once the proposal has been approved by the student’s mentor, committee, and the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the research and analysis begin. The dissertation is largely an independent project that essentially turns the student into a scholar; they’ll dive more deeply into research and writing then they have done before.

“Capella PhD candidates will be prepared for this step through their coursework and residency,” says Manns, noting that they will have learned how to approach this critical phase as part of their pre-dissertation learning.

Format of the dissertation

The dissertation is a much deeper exploration of a research topic than a traditional essay would be. It’s in the form of a book, with at least five chapters (some universities require a sixth chapter in the form of a recap of the previous chapters). Manns outlines the chapters this way:

• Overview. This is a brief look at the research question, containing a preview of the subsequent chapters.
• Literature review. The literature review is an extensive critique and synthesis of the current literature in the field.
• Methodology. This section contains details of the procedures and methods used to collect and analyze data.
• Analysis. The PhD candidate details how the data analysis applies to the collected data.
• Findings. This section provides interpretation of the data and comparison to existing literature, as well as future research possibilities.

The order of the chapters follows a logical progression in which PhD candidates build on their theories and explain research choices in detail before coming to the final chapter that gives weight to the value of the study itself.

Manns recommends that pre-dissertation students review completed dissertations in the field and research various types of methodology and design in the field as well. “That will help give them a feel for the depth of research and discussion, and see how the chapters work together,” Manns explains. “And remember—someday, it may be your dissertation being read!”

Sometime ago, Nathan Drake, one of our recent graduates, got to thinking. How could he help PhD. Students in Agricultural, Rural and Environmental history (ARE) at Mississippi State. He talked with several of his fellow PhD recipients and these young scholars agreed to establish the Scholars of the Earth Dissertation Award . The Scholars of the Earth prize will be awarded annually to a third or fourth year Mississippi State University ARE student who has successfully passed comprehensive exams and proposal defense.

While members of the ARE faculty will give out the annual prize, each donor will receive a copy of all the applications. These young scholars want to keep in touch with those walking their just a few short years ago. They want to stay abreast of the latest ARE work at Mississippi State Department of History.
