However, unbridled accessibility and consumption of fast foods have an array of adverse effects. Firstly, it affects the health of the consumer and raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases, dental problems, etc. Obesity is one of the major side effects of these foods. Secondly, the innumerable ways of obtaining fast food is making people sluggish . For example, due to online delivery options like Zomato, Swiggy, etc., people do not have to go out to eat. This makes them dependent on these apps and gradually, they give up cooking and become torpid . Lastly, overconsumption of fast foods can lead to mental issues like depression and anxiety, as argued by many scientific researchers. They claim as people are more inclined towards eating fast foods, they do not maintain a healthy lifestyle, which contributes to these issues.

In the end, even though fast foods are easy to cook, inexpensive and readily available, greater access to them certainly has more pitfalls than gains.

To begin, fast food allows people to grab a quick bite to eat without spending too much money. As the world has been hit by inflation and stagnant wage growth over the last year, more and more consumers have been unable to find affordable meals on the go . If someone finds themselves in this situation, fast food can help them to afford to eat. Furthermore, for parents, who are deeply affected by price rises, many fast food restaurants have multi-buy meal deals which are suitable for a whole family and which can help them cope. 

However, regular fast food consumption is damaging for those who eat it. Because these foods are prepared in bulk , they rarely use fresh ingredients and often use additives, which can have a negative impact on people’s health. Furthermore, as the quality of the ingredients cannot be high while keeping prices low, these foods often rely on sugar and fats to make them taste better than they otherwise would. For example, compared to an organic homemade burger, a burger from a fast food chain is likely to be full of chemicals, use poor quality meat and bread, and use more sugar and fat than is necessary.

To conclude, fast food is beneficial as it helps people to eat without breaking the bank . However, it also can be damaging to consumer’s health. For me, given that for many, the alternative to fast food is to not be able to afford to eat, fast food has more advantages than disadvantages.

As a consequence, they find it easier to order from these fast food restaurants rather than cook. That is why they favor fast food over their own cooked food.

Another cause of fast food usage is long working hours, which may also lead people to eat outside the home. There are many fast-food businesses in our cities. Some are McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, etc. We can make a long list with hundreds of names from these restaurants.

During the last couple of years, we saw a lot of advertisements and promotions for those restaurants. Nevertheless, there still remains a question of why they spend to promote ineffective food. What are the reasons for this? The answer is that fast food is easy to cook. It does not take long to cook, and it is readily available. The shareholders of these businesses have their own goals, that of the profits they get from these restaurants.

Above, we have seen the causes that may have led to the flourishing of the fast-food industry. However, what is more important, is its effects on society and human beings. The primary effect that fast food has on human beings is that it can get your health in danger status. First, fast food can cause vitamin deficiencies that may, in turn, help to cause diseases.

Obesity is one of the consequences of fast food on the human body. Obesity comes because fast food is the factor that enriches the body with fats. So people will become less healthy, less effective, and less productive, and this is the conclusion of obesity (Adams, 2007, pp. 155).

Another serious effect of the popularity of fast food presences is the loss of the family tradition of eating together. The family used to eat together, and thus they had the opportunity to talk with each other about daily problems.

Fast food also affects the income of the family. The conclusion is that fast food is more expensive than the food you cook for yourself.

In conclusion, it can be said that fast food has been born out of the modern way of living in our societies. Unfortunately, its effects on the human body and health are unfavorable. It also has other adverse effects on the income of a family. It would be best to avoid eating fast foods as much as possible.

Fast foods come in handy for individuals whose tight work schedule does not allow them adequate time to prepare traditional food in their houses. Some restaurants have drive-through services which allow customers to place orders quickly, which saves hours on working consumers’ busy schedules.  In the current world where consumers are health-conscious, some restaurants have turned to offering healthy alternatives. Such alternatives are, however, more expensive.

The health consequences associated with fast foods, however, render such foods harmful and worthless as they reduce human lifespan. Due to high-calorie content, consumers risk suffering from such diseases as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes. Given that a significant number of consumers make poor choices regarding their diet, most of them end up consuming hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers, chips, ice cream, chicken nuggets, fried chicken, sandwiches, among other tasty but high-salt, high-calorie fast foods. Fast foods are made from high saturated fats, increasing the likelihood that such fats end up clogging arteries in consumers’ bodies thus increasing the risk of obesity and heart disease.

At times, the demand for fast foods is so high that hygienic standards are often compromised in some restaurants. In some cases, cows and pigs are hung upsides down, while chicken is cramped in stuffy, enclosed spaces, slaughtered and quickly prepared for consumption. Food-borne illnesses sometimes occur in such cases, resulting in inflated health care costs to individual families and at national levels.

Having evaluated the arguments above, it is clear that the health consequences of fast foods supersede the benefits. A wide range of research literature has proved that fast foods contribute significantly to adverse health conditions as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Such conditions cost the healthcare sector millions of dollars annually, and adversely affect the global economy. For instance, obesity is one of the most devastating health conditions that drain the healthcare sector of the United States. It is surprising that the greatest number of obesity cases is not genetic- it is linked to consumption of high-calorie foods.

In conclusion, fast foods present more problems than benefits to users. Consumers need to either avoid such foods or choose healthier alternatives, such as less salted foods although such options may cost more. Traditionally prepared food is relatively expensive and more time-consuming to prepare but it is certainly healthy. In the long run, good health is more important.

Five Weeknight Dishes

Creamy noodles drizzled with chile crisp, chicken fajitas in soft flour tortillas.

This week’s round of fast, easy dinners leans into cravings.

Hello! Mia here, filling in for Emily Weinstein today. I’m delighted to be here in Five Weeknight Dishesland — I’m usually hanging out in the Cooking newsletter with Melissa Clark and Sam Sifton — to talk about my new favorite thing.

I first found tofu cream — a pourable sauce made from blended tofu, miso and garlic — in Hetty Lui McKinnon’s 2023 cookbook , “ Tenderheart .” Her sauce coats a mix of chewy udon noodles and sautéed mushrooms and leeks, creating a lip-licking pasta that’s filling without feeling heavy. In her creamy vegan tofu noodles (below), the tofu cream is punched up with five-spice powder, tossed with wheat noodles, then drizzled with soy sauce, black vinegar and my forever favorite thing, chile crisp . As Hetty notes, this 20-minute dish will win over everyone, vegan or no. (Case in point: I’m not vegan.)

Tofu cream, I’ve found, works with any type of tofu: Add more water if your tofu is very firm, less or none if you have soft or silken tofu. Toss in some nutritional yeast, fresh herbs, onion powder, more garlic. Make it on the thicker side as a dip for veggies; thin it out to dress salads and grain bowls. But definitely, absolutely make tofu cream noodles.

I know the word “vegan” is shaking off years of bad P.R., but please know that I made this recipe once and then proceeded to make it three more times in the following week.

2. Chicken Fajitas

Every once in a while, I just really want chicken fajitas for dinner. (Perhaps the result of a childhood obsession with the El Machino tortilla robot.) Ali Slagle’s recipe smartly roasts everything on a sheet pan, flipping on the broiler for a few minutes at the end to give the lime-adobo-marinated chicken, bell pepper and onions just enough char. Don’t forget the flour tortillas.

3. Shrimp Fried Rice

Like many people, I went down the Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef rabbit hole this past weekend. But unlike many people, I imagine, my main takeaway was a craving for fried rice . Eric Kim’s quick and flexible shrimp fried rice recipe does indeed come with a “dip sauce” (that is, this ketchup- and mayo-based yum yum sauce ).

4. Sheet-Pan Gnocchi With Mushrooms and Spinach

I have yet to meet an Ali one-pan gnocchi recipe I don’t love: Her versions with sausage and peas , brown butter brussels sprouts and tomatoes and mozzarella are all on repeat in my house. I just learned of this sheet-pan dinner that combines potato gnocchi with umami-rich mushrooms and silky spinach for steakhouse vibes , and I have Tanya Sichynsky’s Veggie newsletter to thank for that.

5. Salmon Croquettes

If you have half an onion and a stray bell pepper left over from fajita night, use them here in Millie Peartree’s salmon croquettes, one of the best uses of canned salmon I know. I tend to make a double batch so I can tuck leftovers into sandwiches with tartar sauce and crisp iceberg lettuce.

Salmon, shrimp, swordfish―the gang's all here!

Name a fish and you can probably grill it. Salmon recipes , shrimp , and basically every kind of white fish make this list, as do several types of shellfish. If you're worried about thin fillets flaking through the grates, stick with thicker cuts with firm flesh like swordfish. Or do yourself a favor and invest in a grill basket which holds flaky fish in place as it cooks. Another option is to rely on skewers. Have you ever met a kebab recipe you didn't like? Exactly!

While fresh seafood is often best, don't panic if you live in a landlocked area or worry that you won't find what you're looking for at the market. Most of these recipes can be made with frozen fish―just make sure you defrost them first before proceeding. (The good news is that defrosting fish is fast, too.) Then season accordingly and pop 'em on for flavor in a flash. It'll give you just enough time to whip up your favorite summer side dish and then dinner is served!

Grilled Salmon

You don't need to add a lot to salmon fillets to make them flavorful. Here, you use a little apple cider vinegar, dijon mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Then sprinkle with some fresh parsley once grilled.

Grilled Mahi Mahi

Mild and flaky yet firm, mahi mahi is easy to season and grill. A little sprinkle of paprika, garlic powder, and fresh thyme is all you need, which would also work well with snapper or grouper, too.

Grilled Lobster Tail

What feels so luxurious to serve and eat is actually quite easy to cook! Lobster tails get a quick bath in marinade and need less than 15 minutes to cook on a grill. Use fresh or defrosted frozen tails!
