A GUIDE FOR PRESERVICE AND GRADUATE TEACHERS

Teaching…Metaphors and Similes

The situation.

You need strategies to explain metaphors and similes to your students.

The Solution

Language Features are widely accepted techniques or devices that audiences may expect to find in a text of a particular genre. Choices in language features and text structures together define a type of text and shape its meaning.

  • Personification
  • Alliteration

Let’s focus on metaphors. All metaphors are complex. They require abstract thinking and a little bit of prior knowledge to really get your head around it.

A metaphor is a literary device that (1) suggests a resemblance (2) by comparing two things (objects or ideas) (3) that are not usually considered alike (4) without using the words “like” or “as.” Similes: A figure of speech in which an object compared to another in one particular aspect.

Concept Attainment

When explaining metaphors to students, draw the following on the whiteboard:

the assignment was a breeze

Explain that when you write a metaphor a simple metaphor such as Sally is a pig, you are applying the qualities of a pig to Sally. The connective is brings both concepts together. This, we call, a metaphor. A simile on the other hand, uses like to connect to two concepts.

The above diagram helps explain and visual what a metaphor is.

Have students look a the following metaphors. Which ones are metaphors and which are similes?

• Life is a rollercoaster. • The assignment was a breeze. • The classroom was like a zoo. • He is a night owl. • The stormy ocean was a raging bull.

Once students have recorded their diagram and can identify the difference between metaphors and similes, they are ready to move onto the final activity.

Final Activity

Select one of the following metaphors :

  • Life is a rollercoaster.
  • The assignment was a breeze.
  • He is a night owl.
  • The stormy ocean was a raging bull.

Set the timer on your iPad for 5 mins. Draw what you see when you read the metaphor.

What is a Figure of Speech?

A figure of speech is a phrase or word that contains meaning other than its literal meaning. Figures of speech use comparison in order to express implied or suggested meaning.

Common Figures of Speech

The following four literary devices are commonly used figures of speech:

Metaphors convey meaning other than the literal. They do this by creating comparisons between two things in which one thing is said to be another thing. For example, “that assignment was a breeze” is a metaphor implying that the assignment was not challenging. Of course, the assignment is not literally a gust of air but it helps the audience to understand that, as opposed to storm winds, it was relaxed and manageable.

Simile functions similarly to metaphor but uses comparison words in order to create implied meaning. The most common comparison words used are “like” or “as.” For example, “the military men are all as brave as lions” implies that the military men have similar traits to lions, animals that are known for stoicism and bravery.

Hyperbole is an intentional exaggeration of the truth in order to create humorous effect. As an example, if you go to school tired, you may catch yourself thinking “man, my backpack weighs a ton.” Of course, the backpack just feels extra heavy because you are tired but it does not really weigh 2,000 pounds!

Personification

Personification is the attribution of human traits to non-human things. This helps to create imagery and uses comparison to convey deeper meaning beyond the literal. For example, when someone feels oppressed by cold and wet weather, they may say “This weather is so gloomy.” The weather is not capable of feeling gloomy emotions but to personify it helps it to make more sense in abstract ways.

The Function of Figures of Speech

Figure of speech serves to enhance the artistic, creative, and liveliness elements of writing and ideas. It can evoke emotional responses from readers, or just help them identify more closely with the material. Since figure of speech uses comparisons in order to create double meanings in ideas, it is not always the best way to provide clarity. However, when it comes to abstract ideas that are difficult to explain, figure of speech can create clarity by allowing the emotional and creative parts of the brain to work to understand deep and abstract levels of meaning beyond the literal and ordinary.

Figure of speech helps writers to bring life and color into their writing and gives them a chance to flex their unique styles and ideas. This helps to add an element of relatability to writing as well because people often think in figures of speech as they experience life. It helps up to make sense of things and relate to things more deeply and profoundly.

Examples of Figures of Speech in Literature

In William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Shakespeare creates an extended metaphor in order to draw similarities between plays on a stage and real life, emphasizing that nothing can be done without some level of outside scrutiny and/or interest. Because of this, everyone is just performing in their own way.

All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages

In Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca , the author refers to a washed-out road as “the poor thread,” using the metaphor to express the tiredness of the journey.

On and on, now east now west, wound the poor thread that once had been our drive. Sometimes I thought it lost, but it appeared again, beneath a fallen tree perhaps, or struggling on the other side of a muddied ditch created by the winter rains.

In the following Russian proverb, a simple metaphor is created in order to express the futility of trying to have everything all at once. Every culture has a way of saying this. In the U.S., you might have heard “you can’t have your cake and eat it too,” which shows that this is a complicated universal characteristic of humans and we are all just trying to understand this complex truth.

If you chase two rabbits, you will lose them both.

Recap: What is Figure of Speech in Literature?

Figure of speech is the use of words to convey deeper meaning beyond the literal by using comparison as a tool to do so.

Choose one of the main ideas Emerson develops about Transcendentalism in "Self-Reliance." Write an essay of at least two hundered words exploring this idea. Cite examples from the essay.

Essay on "Self-Reliance."

The main ideas Emerson develops about Transcendentalism in "Self-Reliance." is that each individual has to avoid conformity and false consistency, and have to follow his own instincts and ideas in order to become successful. Every person has to be self reliance means that he or she should not depend on other people, he or she should only depends on itself so in this way they get success in their professional as well as personal life. Those people that depends on other people gets difficulties in their professional life and they will never get successful.

One of the primary ideas that Emerson quite often writes about and develops about Transcendentalist in "Self-Reliance" is the idea of nonconformity in order to attain individuality. In my personal opinion, I believe that these ideas were very important and relevant to today's society especially considering the push from social media to force everyone into a box in which they cannot or are afraid to show their true selves. It is also paramount for any and every individual to focus on information that is true rather than misinformation and lies that are told in order to prevent oneself from finding who they really are as a person and what they believe in. In the end, it is someone's own decision who they want to be and what beliefs that they wish to have. Today's society has a major issue, especially on social media, with simply following along to whatever is popular at the moment, and many people who do not conform to this are shunned and pressured to become like everyone else. Therefore, it is important for one to reject what is most popular and not to conform to the beliefs, ideas, or personality that everyone else wants them to adopt.

Hope this helps! Please put your answer in your own words <3

In the twentieth century, this approach changed—as did several key elements of the address. Woodrow Wilson resumed personal delivery of the speech in 1913. In 1923, Calvin Coolidge expanded the audience of the address to the nation by delivering the speech over the radio. In 1947, Harry Truman’s speech was the first televised State of the Union address. George W. Bush became the first president to have his address transmitted live on the Internet in 2002 (see Figure 1). Based on the details in paragraph 3, what generalization can be made about twentieth-century presidents and the State of the Union address? A. Most presidents treated the address as a chance to comfort the public. B. Most presidents used the address to quell the criticism of opponents. C. Most presidents saw the address as a way to maintain tradition. Most presidents saw the address as a way to maintain tradition. D. Most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

D. Most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

According to paragraph 3, it is described how twentieth century presidents of America made changes in their State of the Union address from Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and George Bush to make the address as accessible as possible.

Therefore, based on the details in paragraph 3, the generalization that can be made about twentieth-century presidents and the State of the Union address is that most presidents made the address as accessible as possible.

In "Times Have Changed," why did the author most likely show the points of view of a grandfather and his grandson?

Because he wanted to show how the worldview is different for different generations.

In "Times Have Changed," we can see how different perspectives, thoughts, and even grandson and grandson perspectives are different, even if they are looking at the same things and the same elements. The author does this to show that there are no right or wrong opinions between these two characters, but different opinions due to the generations they belong to. In summary, the author states that different generations think and see the world in different ways because they were lived in different ways, which makes them have constructions of thoughts that are completely different from each other.

Read the paragraph from The Hot Zone and the summary that follows it. Once the cells in a biological machine stop working, it can never be started again. It goes into a cascade of decay, falling toward disorder and randomness. Except in the case of viruses. They can turn off and go dead. Then, if they come in contact with a living system, they switch on and multiply. The only thing that "lived" inside this monkey was the unknown agent, and it was dead, for the time being. It was not multiplying or doing anything, since the monkey's cells were dead. But if the agent touched living cells, Nancy's cells, it would come alive and begin to amplify itself. In theory, it could amplify itself around the world in the human species. Summary of central idea: It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to "come alive.” Which changes should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph’s central idea? Select two options. Remove the phrase “It is petrifying” because it expresses a personal feeling. Include the detail that there was a dead virus living inside the monkey. Remove the detail that viruses can come alive even if they are dead. Add the phrase “and spread throughout the human species” to the end of the statement to more fully express the central idea. Add a personal opinion about what may happen if the virus does “come alive.”

In a monkey's body, the only thing that "lived" was the unknown agent, and it was dead. If the agent touched living cells, Nancy's cells, it would come alive and begin to amplify itself. In theory, it could amplify itself around the world in the human species. It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to "come alive," says Dr. David Perry.

The changes that should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph's central idea are: Remove the phrase "it is petrifying" because it expresses a personal feeling , and add the phrase "and spread throughout the human species" to the end of the statement to more fully express the central ideas of the first and fourth options.

The original summary of the paragraph's central idea included the phrase "It is petrifying that even if viruses are dead, they have the potential to 'come alive.'" This phrase expresses a personal feeling of fear, but it is not directly supported by the information presented in the paragraph. While the paragraph does mention the potential danger of a dead virus coming into contact with living cells and multiplying, it does not explicitly state that this is a petrifying or scary idea.

Hence, the changes that should be made to improve this summary of the paragraph's central idea are: Remove the phrase "it is petrifying" because it expresses a personal feeling, and add the phrase "and spread throughout the human species" to the end of the statement to more fully express the central ideas of the first and fourth options.

I flew on JetBlue founder David Neeleman's new airline, Breeze Airways, and saw how easy it is to have a great experience for dirt cheap

The inaugural flight of david neeleman's breeze airways. thomas pallini/insider.

  • David Neeleman's Breeze Airways is an ultra-low-cost carrier that's directly the opposite of his famed JetBlue Airways.
  • Flyers pay low fares but are then enticed to spend more on extras like baggage and seat assignments.
  • Avoiding extra fees on Breeze is quite easy, as I found when taking two flights on the airline.

Insider Today

Flying during the summer of vaccinated travel doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

David Neeleman, the founder of JetBlue Airways and four other airlines, just launched Breeze Airways with 39 new low-cost leisure routes across the US launching this summer.

Breeze's value proposition comes from offering cheap flights between cities with little to no direct air connectivity and fares start at $39 for even its longest flights. But extra fees for add-ons like checked baggage and seat assignments can quickly increase the final bill, defeating the purpose of booking with an ultra-low-cost carrier in the first place.

Read More: How JetBlue's founder plans to offer low prices without a low-end experience on his newest airline, Breeze

I took two flights on Breeze Airways flying from Tampa, Florida to Charleston, South Carolina and onward to Hartford, Connecticut on the first day of the airline's operations . Over the course of two flights, I saw how the airline follows the typical ultra-low-cost playbook and got a sense of how to spend as little as possible while getting the most from the airline.

Here's how to when flying on America's newest ultra-low-cost airline.

Don't buy a seat assignment

My rule when flying ultra-low-cost carriers is to never pay extra for a seat assignment. And on Breeze, that rule holds truer than on others.

All of Breeze's current aircraft are Embraer E190 and E195 aircraft — which JetBlue Airways, TAP Air Portugal, and Azul Brazilian Airlines flyers will recognize — and configured in a 2-2 configuration. Each seat is either an aisle or window seat with no middles to be found on the entire aircraft.

Flyers that don't pay up for a seat assignment will have one auto-assigned by the airline but every passenger is still guaranteed an aisle or window seat. With that in mind, it's easy enough to forgo the extra fee and still get a great seat.

Having an auto-assigned seat also doesn't mean the airline will assign the worst seat on the aircraft to those that don't pay up. Cheaper seats in the back will likely be bought up and leave the more expensive seats open to be auto-assigned.

Case in point, I was assigned seat 23C on my first Breeze flight. It was an aisle seat towards the back of the plane but nowhere near the last row.

And if the auto-assigned seat isn't desirable, a friendly gate agent might be willing to help out. Breeze's motto, after all, is "seriously nice." When flying from Charleston to Hartford, I kindly asked the gate agent if any full rows were available and I was moved to one, free of charge.

Families traveling with children 12 and under can also select seats for free.

Breeze flights are also incredibly short with the majority under two hours. So unless there's a certain type of seat that a flyer needs to have, paying up is pointless.

Pick the Embraer E195, if possible

Breeze's fleet of Embraer aircraft may look nearly identical but they offer vastly different onboard products. The Embraer E195 is the larger aircraft and current crown jewel of the fleet in terms of onboard comfort.

Related stories

Standard legroom seats, known as "nice" seats, feature 31 inches of pitch and extra legroom "nicer" seats offer between 34 and 39 inches of pitch. The E190, for comparison, only offers 29 inches of pitch for nice seats and nicer seats offer between 33 and 39 inches of pitch.

But these planes won't be easy to nail down. There are only three E195s currently flying for Breeze, according to Planespotters.net , and flyers may not have a choice of aircraft when booking. But if flyers do find themselves with a choice, the E195 is the way to go.

Do it yourself whenever possible

Nearly everything that a Breeze employee would have to help you with will incur an extra charge and the only way to avoid those fees is by simply doing everything yourself.

Getting a mobile boarding pass instead of having an airport agent print one will save $3, changing a flight using the Breeze website or mobile application will save $9, and adding baggage allowance on the website or app will save $50.

There are some things that the airline simply must help with, including when flights are delayed or canceled. But for the most part, the airline wants flyers to do things themselves or pay the privilege of help.

Download the Breeze mobile application

Breeze bills itself as a "high-tech company that just happens to fly airplanes," as Neeleman told AFAR . But while all of the technological aspects of the airline are yet to be fully developed , the airline's mobile application is a good start and makes it easy for flyers to do things themselves.

Customers can book and change flights on the app without having to talk to a Breeze agent, as well as pay for extras like seat assignments and baggage allowance. Mobile boarding passes can also be downloaded to the app so flyers can save the $3 airport printing fee.

The result is saving money on a flight while also speeding through an airport when it comes time to fly.

Just bring a backpack

Breeze charges a baggage fee of $20 fee for passengers checking a bag or carrying on any bag larger than a personal item — such as a purse or backpack. That fee increase to $25 if the flight is longer.

It's a reasonable price to charge and lower than what most airlines charge for a checked bag.

The fee is avoidable, though, if flyers don't need to bring a lot of luggage. Those getting away for a short trip can save $20 by simply bringing a backpack instead of a carry-on bag.

Breeze's requirement is that it fits under the seat so overhead bin space is taken up.

Snacks are complimentary, for now

Ultra-low-cost airlines rarely give customers anything for free, snacks and drinks included. Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, for example, charge for water on their flights.

Breeze will eventually begin selling snacks and drinks but for now, a complimentary offering of Utz chips and Kind bars are available to passengers accompanied by small bottles of water. It's not much of an offering but it's enough to get through a quick flight.

Be nice to flight attendants

Airlines aren't the only entities capable of charging extra fees.

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning that unruly flyers can be issued fines of up to $35,000 if they act up on airplanes. Flight attendants have been the subject of unruly passengers over issues including the federal mask mandate, as Insider's Allana Akhtar has reported , and incidents on onboard violence have skyrocketed to more than 3,200 cases as of early July.

Being kind to airline workers doesn't require a mobile application or printing one's own boarding pass, and all the savings that can be had on Breeze can also be quickly obliterated by the FAA.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Los angeles dodgers | dodgers give shohei ohtani his first day off of the season, dodgers manager dave roberts says it is ‘just a routine day off,’ but ohtani is still struggling with runners in scoring position.

the assignment was a breeze

Shohei Ohtani wasn’t in the lineup after starting each of his first 32 games with the Dodgers. The trio of Mookie Betts, Ohtani and Freddie Freeman had occupied the first three spots in the Dodgers’ lineup every game before Wednesday. Now, Betts, Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez are the only Dodgers to play each of the first 33 games.

“I think that he understands that it’s a long season, so there wasn’t any back and forth,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Ohtani. “I think he understands that it’s probably for his own benefit.”

Roberts said it was “just a routine day off” and not prompted by anything. But Ohtani was 1 for 5 Tuesday with three strikeouts and is 5 for his past 26 (.192). He was 0 for 2 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday – though a run did score on a wild pitch while he was batting with the bases loaded – and if there is any blemish to be found in Ohtani’s excellent start this season it is in those situations. He is batting .184 (7 for 38).

Roberts has said at times he sees Ohtani altering his approach in those situations and being overly aggressive, expanding his strike zone and swinging at pitches he would not in lower-leverage situations.

“I think that hitters want to hit. Shohei is as aggressive as those bees were last night,” Roberts said. “They want to hit in big spots. Certainly, he feels like he’s the best option to drive in a run. And that’s what pitchers feed off of. So I do think, like I was talking about earlier, that he’s managed that controlling of the strike zone. But I think the DNA part of it is to want to swing the bat, which is still a good thing.”

COMING SOON

The Dodgers cleared the way for Walker Buehler to return to their starting rotation next week by sending right-hander Landon Knack back to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Knack was 1-1 with a 2.81 ERA in three starts after right-hander Bobby Miller also went on the injured list.

Buehler made his final rehab start for OKC on Tuesday, completing five innings for the first time in his six starts, and will start Monday for the Dodgers against the Miami Marlins.

“We’re excited about that. Everything checked out,” Roberts said, calling Buehler’s final rehab start “his best one.”

Buehler has not pitched in a major-league game since June 2022 and underwent both a second Tommy John surgery and flexor tendon repair that summer. But the Dodgers are optimistic the Buehler who returns to their rotation will still be the aggressive, power-pitching version who once led their rotation.

“I think he’s going to still be Walker,” Roberts said. “He’s going to be attacking. But I think that there’s an attacking with his entire repertoire. I think that in years past, it was heavy fastball, heavy cutter where I think that Walker has more weapons. And I think that’s what my hope is, instead of just trying to bully guys.

“It’s different for everyone (returning from a major injury). … As you haven’t been competing at this level for quite some time, to sort of feel, figure out, see where you’re at at this point in time. … I’m sure there’s going to be some anxiousness, some nerves, that there naturally should be, until you kind of get a couple starts under your belt. You know, Clayton Kershaw is going to have it when he comes back. So if he’s going to have that, sure as heck Walker’s gonna have that too, which is normal.”

Optioning Knack to Triple-A allowed the Dodgers to recall right-hander J.P. Feyereisen and add a fresh arm to their depleted bullpen. Feyereisen made two appearances with the Dodgers earlier this season, allowing six runs in 1⅓ innings. At OKC, he was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances.

TREINEN REHAB

Right-hander Blake Treinen’s fourth appearance on a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday was his best so far.

Treinen pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. He threw 15 pitches, 11 strikes. Treinen has allowed five runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four in 3⅓ innings on his rehab assignment.

The expectation is Treinen will pitch again on Thursday. Pitching on back-to-back days could be the final step before his return to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are off Thursday.

The next-gen collar comes in multiple colorways and two strap sizes that work on any breed, as long as they are over 5 months old and over 20 lbs. A Halo app subscription is required to access the collar features, with plans starting from $9.99 a month.
