You can make the most of this template and prepare a presentation in which you share tips on how to commemorate this day and what to do to help others. It's a minitheme, so we've kept things simple and... sticky! But not that kind of sticky. What we mean to say is that we've opted for using lots of heart-shaped stickers!

World Kindness Day: K-5 Lesson Plan & Materials

Happy (almost) World Kindness Day! November 13th is World Kindness Day and oh goodness does our world need some more kindness in it.

One of the (many) reasons I love being a teacher is how kind my students always are. From Kindergarten to Third Grade, I am amazed year after year about the level of care each of them have for each other and our community. While my kiddos come to me very inherently kind, it also takes deliberate planning on my part to make sure I am bringing out their empathy and cultivating a caring classroom community. I use my Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Block for this task!

In my SEL Block, we hold class meetings, do compliment circles, journal, reflect, and teach explicit SEL lessons. One explicit lesson that we usually do in the year is around kindness and acts of kindness. This year, I wanted to revamp it for World Kindness Day and center it around a new diverse book that was just published this October! Check out the lesson plan and resources below to center kindness in your own K-5 classroom.

Featured Book

When we are kind / nihá’ádaahwiinít’íigo , written by monique gray smith and illustrated by nicole neidhardt, the spectrum for multicultural lit.: between representation & exploration.

world kindness day presentation

I am a turning into a huge Monique Gray Smith fan! Her book When We Are Kind is a short picture book that is centered around kindness. In the beginning, each page details an act of kindness people do. The last section is all about how we feel when someone is kind to us. The book ends by stating, “When we are kind, we remember we are all related”. I love the focus on collectivism in this line and throughout the whole book!

When We Are Kind is written by Monique Gray Smith, a Native American author of Cree, Lakota, and Scottish descent, and illustrated by Nicole Neidhardt, a Native American illustrator of Diné (Navajo) and European descent. The copy that I have is written in English and Diné because I believe this is a beautiful opportunity for students to experience Native language (we always want to be providing multiple windows and mirrors).

Lesson Plan & Materials

To celebrate and recognize this day, this lesson will have students explore kindness. First, students will read and discuss  When We Are Kind:   Nihá’ádaahwiinít’íigo,  by Monique Gray Smith. Then, students will brainstorm acts of kindness they want to do that day and/or week. After, students will have a chance to fill out their Kindness Plan. Check out the extension options at the end to dive deeper into kindness within your classroom community!

It always warms my heart when I see people using our resources and furthering students’ access to diverse books!

Have a great World Kindness Day with your kiddos! Don’t forget to practice some self-kindness and take care of yourself during this crazy time ❤️

The purpose of World Kindness Day as outlined by the World Kindness Movement is “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” Since its creation more than two decades ago, the day has achieved truly global notice; events associated with the day have attracted participants from every inhabited continent. These have included activities such as concerts, dance mobs, and the distribution of “kindness cards.”

In 1998, in pursuit of this aim, they would facilitate the launch of the World Kindness Day.

This incident would lead to the founding of the Society Kindness Movement, whose written founding statement stated their "pledge to come together to build a kinder and more compassionate world."

Because of their commitment to promoting kindness in society, a variety of institutions and groups from nations such as Australia, Thailand, the United States, and the United Kingdom had gathered at this conference.

World Kindness Day was first introduced as a day of observation by the World Kindness Movement. In 2019, the organization was registered as an official NGO under Swiss law, but the history of the group stretches back to a Tokyo-based convention in 1997.

The objective of World Kindness Day is to spread kindness with small gestures. The main tradition of the day is to be kind and to try and encourage kindness to prevail over hatred. Whether it’s helping out someone with chores, taking the time out to ask how someone is doing, or complimenting someone, the name of the game is kindness, and we all have it in us.

WORLD KINDNESS DAY TRADITIONS

World Kindness Day is a global observation that emphasizes the need to be kind to one other in order to thrive peacefully as a global community. This year, World Kindness Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 13th November 2022. This day is observed in countries such as Nigeria, Canada, Australia, Italy, UAE, UK, and India.

World Kindness Day 2022

The theme of World Kindness Day 2022 is “Be Kind Whenever Possible.” The theme is taken from a Dalai Lama quote: “Be kind whenever possible,” His Holiness says: “It is always possible.” ‍

WORLD KINDNESS DAY WORKSHOP

Celebrate World Kindness Day by taking part in our biggest ever virtual Kindness Workshop! We usually run our workshops in person, but this World Kindness Day we wanted to reach as many children as possible, so we are hosting an online workshop (this will be held either via YouTube Live or as a Zoom webinar – we will confirm shortly) and inviting schools join us. Our workshops aim to spread kindness and empower children by helping them to realise that the little choices they make every day have the power to change people’s lives, while improving their own physical and mental health at the same time.

  1. A fun presentation (25 minutes)

The workshop is led by our Director of Kindness, Greig Trout, and held via You Tube Live o Zoom Webinar (the exact format will be confirmed shortly). The children will be able to see Greig, but he can’t see or hear the children. During the presentation, Greig will interact with the children by asking questions, which can be answered by a teacher writing in the chat window (or the children, if they are on individuals computers). Or if you prefer, you can just sit back, listen and enjoy the workshop.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day: In Honor of Red Crossers Who Reconnect Families around the Globe

world kindness day presentation

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day falls on May 8 annually, and the date serves as a special opportunity each year to recognize the kindness, bravery and selflessness of more than 16 million Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers worldwide.

Christine Medeiros and Hawley Rising, two American Red Cross Restoring Family Links volunteers, work day in and day out to address some of the most basic and important human needs: to be in contact with loved ones and to know where they are or what has become of them.

Countless people around the world every year lose contact with loved ones in situations of armed conflict, violence, natural disasters or migration. The unique global network of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has been working for more than a century to assist and support such families. Family reconnection messages transmitted through the RFL program can be brief, but the three short words -- “I am alive” -- can mean the world to a family in distress.

Christine, recently retired from the technology industry after 40 years in marketing and partnerships, serves as a Red Cross divisional lead for the RFL program, where she oversees casework and outreach for seven states in the continental US and the Pacific Islands. In addition to her leadership within the program, she is also an active caseworker and mentor specializing in outreach.

“I love what I do at the Red Cross,” said Christine. “The Red Cross is helping protect and keep families whole, and I’m glad to be a part of a service that has been around for over 100 years.”

When caseworkers like Christine and Hawley receive requests from people searching for family members or loved ones, they get right to work, making calls and working alongside the global network to trace family members, sometimes separated across years and thousands of miles. Once the Red Cross network finds the person they are looking for, caseworkers share contact information to facilitate communication. In some cases, the Red Cross may even assist with the in-person reunion of loved ones.

Hawley, a retired mathematician with a knack for research and algorithm development, is the longest running RFL caseworker in the Northern California Coastal Region of the American Red Cross. Hawley has a tremendous pool of knowledge having worked through many challenging RFL cases and helping hundreds of people since his start with the program in 2009. He also offers invaluable mentorship to fellow RFL caseworkers.

“I enjoy having helped someone, whether it is through getting their case to a successful conclusion or an unsuccessful one, or giving a reference,” he said.

To pay tribute to the outstanding service provided by RFL Caseworkers, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement awards a Movement Family Links Medal to five recipients globally every two years. This year, Christine and Hawley were both nominated as medal candidates for their commitment to families near and far, and for finding innovative and creative ways to overcome obstacles and offer services to those who need them.

All national societies with candidates can submit one finalist to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for consideration – Christine was this year’s American Red Cross final nominee. The five 2024 Movement Family Links Medals will be awarded during the Council of Delegates in Geneva, Switzerland in October.

Chargers News: How Football World Feels About First Jim Harbaugh-Era Draft

Alex kirschenbaum | may 7, 2024.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh celebrates during the CFP national championship trophy presentation.

  • Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have added nine new rookie pieces to their roster via the 2024 NFL Draft, their first such event with Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz in charge. But how did they do, according to national pundits?

Our colleague Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated awarded the group with an A.

"The Chargers have been going about their business wisely," Verderame wrote. "Alt was the best player available in the first round and gives them a nasty tackle combo with Rashawn Slater on the other side. Then, trading up in the second round netted McConkey, who is already Los Angeles' most talented receiver. This is a foundational class for new coach Jim Harbaugh, who is trying to build both culture and a winner."

Danny Kelly of The Ringer , too, awarded the Chargers with an A for their work.

"I'm actually fine with that choice—Alt brings rare size and athleticism to the tackle position, and paired with former first-round pick Rashawn Slater, gives the team the potential to field one of the best tackle tandems in football," Kelly noted. "It helped too that the team didn't completely abandon the thought of having Justin Herbert throw the football, by trading up in the second round to nab an electric pass-catcher in Ladd McConkey. The former Georgia star is a nuanced route runner with great hands and elite acceleration, and could be Herbert's new go-to-guy in high leverage situations. I loved that Los Angeles was able to land linebacker Junior Colston in the third round, as well. Colston reunites with his college coach in Harbaugh (as well as defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who followed Harbaugh from Michigan), and has the potential to be a day one starter on the team's new-look defense. Sixth-round running back Kimani Vidal and seventh-round receiver Brenden Rice both have a chance to emerge as role players for this team early on, too."

Vinnie Iyler of The Sporting News has also revealed himself to be a massive appreciator of this initial draft during the Harbaugh era:

*Who has it better than coach Jim Harbaugh?" Iyler asked. "Only a few teams. He helped new GM Joe Hortiz nail this critical draft, getting an elite pass protector and top new versatile target for Justin Herbert. Colson was the right Michigan man to add, flipping a weakness into a strength. Still and Hart bring key depth, and Vidal is a good all-around contingency for former Ravens Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins. Rice and Johnson provide some big-play options to help replace Mike Williams and provide contingency for Quentin Johnston."

Kris Knox of Bleacher Report "only" awarded the Chargers' draft with an A-, and he explained his thinking:

"The Los Angeles Chargers might have been tempted to move down in a trade with a QB-needy team. Instead, they stood pat and took Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt with the No. 5 overall pick," Knox noted. "It's an unsurprising pairing given new head coach Jim Harbaugh's history of building his teams from the interior out. It was also a valuable pick. Alt was the top-ranked tackle and the fifth-ranked overall prospect on the B/R board..."

"The Chargers entered the draft as a team that had a franchise quarterback and a lot of question marks beyond that," Knox said. "They might not be ready to contend right away, but they took a big step toward developing a new identity with this year's draft."

Even on the more negative side of the spectrum, Kyle Dvorchak of NBC Sports still gave Los Angeles a fairly positive B- grade, with the team's top two picks getting the most scrutiny.

"They went with Joe Alt, an outstanding left tackle who will move to the right side in LA, and Ladd McConkey, a speedy and versatile receiver with great efficiency numbers but no breakout season on his resume..." Dvorchak reflected.

"The Chargers were one of the few teams who could justify a Day Two pick on a running back," Dvorchak continued. "They entered the weekend with Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, castoffs from Baltimore, as their top options. First-year GM Joe Hortiz was patient and landed small-school dominator Kimani Vidal in the sixth. Vidal compiled 1,661 yards on 297 carries as a senior. He led the nation in attempts and missed tackles forced."

Here is what Stormy Daniels testified happened between her and Donald Trump

All eyes are on porn actor Stormy Daniels, who took the stand in Donald Trump’s trial Tuesday and recounted the lead-up to meeting Trump and a 2006 sexual encounter she has said the two engaged in. Trump denies the encounter took place.

NEW YORK (AP) — Porn actor Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against Donald Trump, who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the claims as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels, and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It’s the biggest spectacle yet in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Here are some takeaways from Daniels’ testimony:

WHO IS STORMY DANIELS?

The case centers on a $130,000 payment to Daniels from Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 campaign. Prosecutors say it was part of a scheme to illegally influence the campaign by burying negative stories about him.

His lawyers have sought to show that Trump was trying to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford , told jurors that she started exotic dancing in high school and appearing in adult films at age 23, eventually moving on to direct more than 150 films and winning a roster of porn industry awards.

MEETING TRUMP

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

PAYMENTS FOR SILENCE

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission. She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

MISTRIAL PUSH

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

CROSS-EXAMINATION

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” Defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said, “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort Trump.

TRUMP IN COURT

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

At one point, the judge told defense lawyers during a sidebar conversation — out of earshot of the jury and the public — that he could hear Trump “cursing audibly” and see him shaking his head, according to a transcript of the proceedings.

“I am speaking to you here at the bench because I don’t want to embarrass him,” Judge Juan Merchan told Blanche, Trump’s lawyer. Blanche assured the judge he would talk to his client.

“You need to speak to him. I won’t tolerate that,” the judge said.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

A JARRING SPLIT SCREEN

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, his rival, Democratic President Joe Biden, was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism.

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war.

Whitehurst reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Michael Sisak, Jennifer Peltz, Jake Offenhartz and Alanna Durkin Richer contributed to this story.

'It was like the internet back then': Restored Door County Bookmobile back after 35 years

The 1964 vehicle brought books to thousands of children across the peninsula. it will appear at a number of events this summer, starting may 11 at write on, door county..

EGG HARBOR - With all the recent efforts to improve high-speed internet access to the more remote areas of Door County, it might be hard for some people to imagine that similar efforts were made just to get books to some of those same rural areas not that long ago.

Now, that effort to bring reading materials to people, especially children, who otherwise might not have access to them comes back to life with the return of the Door County Bookmobile .

Retired since 1989, the 60-year-old vehicle that carried books and magazines to borrow for a week or two has been completely restored, with a couple modern-day conveniences added, and makes its first public appearance since its restoration Saturday, May 11, at the "Mothers & Others Day" literacy and creativity celebration at Write On, Door County .

Here's what's going on with the bookmobile.

'It was like the internet back then'

Again, it's probably hard for some, especially younger people, to understand how difficult it was for residents of rural areas in the 1940s and '50s to get access to reading materials. Back then, libraries generally had fewer branches that reached into those remote communities and it probably was difficult if not impossible for children in those areas to get to a library that was miles away.

That led to a movement across the country to improve library access for rural residents, and the state's Wisconsin Free Library Commission picked up that movement by establishing the Door-Kewaunee Regional Library Demonstration in 1950, an experiment by the commission that had a bookmobile visit the remote areas to provide mobile library access.

As Julie Hein wrote in an article on the cooperative state history website Wisconsin 101 , "At this time per capita book circulation in Wisconsin was decreasing, rural literacy rates were low, and libraries were underfunded. Most adults in Door County at the end of the 1940s, for instance, had only an eighth-grade education, and nearly all children attended school in 1- or 2-room school houses with limited resources."

And the bookmobile wasn't just for kids. An article on the website for Door County Bookmobile, Inc. , the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization running the project, noted the bookmobile carried agricultural magazines and equipment manuals for the county's many farmers, popular novels, business resource materials and books in the native languages of the Peninsula's migrant workers and residents.

"It was like the internet back then for a rural community where you didn't have access to a library," said John Sawyer, co-founder of Door County Bookmobile, Inc. "It went to all the schools, from Washington Island to Southern Door."

Funding from the state for the experiment ended after two years, but Door County voters approved a referendum in 1952 to have the Door County Library continue to operate a bookmobile that would traverse the county.

The bookmobile, back then

The original Door County Bookmobile, built in 1950, ran until it was getting worn down and retired in 1967. The following year saw its replacement – the bookmobile that will be seen Saturday at Write On and later this summer at a variety of community events.

The existing and restored Door County Bookmobile originally was designed and built in 1964 by Gerstenslager Co., an Ohio-based manufacturer of firetrucks, mobile X-ray labs and the iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. The bookmobile website says Gerstenslager also got on the bookmobile bandwagon early and became their dominant maker in the U.S., about 90% of them coming from their shop.

This Door County Bookmobile was used by the library from 1968 to 1989, when it was retired in favor of a cargo van. Sturgeon Bay resident and book lover John Enigl bought the vehicle from the library in 1990 and stored all his books in it.

The bookmobile, now

The Egg Harbor Historical Society bought the bookmobile from Enigl in 2014. The plan was to restore it and get it up and running again and began raising funds for it, but the project stalled with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020.

Following the pandemic, historical society board members Sawyer and Carey Bertschinger decided they wanted the project to move forward. They formed Door County Bookmobile, Inc., to raise funds for the restoration. It bought the bookmobile from the historical society and raised the funds to complete the restoration, although the group continues to seek funds.

Sawyer said the organization so far has raised about $200,000 of its $500,000 goal. He said the cost of the restoration itself was about $136,000, but additional funds are needed for electrical generators, maintenance, books and other supplies, and storage.

Restoration work has been a top-to-bottom effort. Sawyer said the bookmobile now has a new chassis and engine with refinished cabinets and new flooring, with much of the mechanical work performed by Reese Ellison and crew at Reese's Body Shop in Sturgeon Bay.

Sawyer said the restored bookmobile is almost entirely as it was when children would last have boarded it in 1989. The main differences will be the addition of a public address system, computers with Wi-Fi capability and a TV screen that can be used for video presentations on the vehicle, its history and impact, which is why electrical generators are needed.

Door County Bookmobile, Inc., has bought the vehicle from the historical society, and a ceremony to transfer its ownership to the nonprofit will be held June 21 at Horseshoe Bay Farms in Egg Harbor.

What's the bookmobile doing this summer?

Following its debut at Write On, where it will host readings of children’s books and give away 50 free copies of a new children’s book, the bookmobile is scheduled to appear at a variety of community festivals, parades and events. Those include the annual end of school/start of summer event June 1 at Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay, Belgian Days in Brussels and the Door County Fair.

The bookmobile won't run this winter, but Sawyer said in September it will drive around for a giveaway of books to children in grades kindergarten through two across the county, then repeat that next spring.

While the organization is giving away children's books, it's not yet set up to lend books as in the old days. Sawyer said the group plans to have books for checkout as soon as 2025, once it builds up its library and has volunteers to do the job. So, this first year is to get out the word through its numerous public appearances.

"This year, it's just promotional, for people to see it and go through it," Sawyer said. "We're hoping to put it into service for next year. The idea is it will make books available throughout the county."

Why does the bookmobile matter?

Well, first of all, Sawyer said, it's the idea of bringing books and other reading materials to parts of the community that might have issues accessing them otherwise, even in our age of connectivity.

But he also said the bookmobile should bring back a lot of memories to those who not only used it back in the day but relied on it in many ways to stay connected to literacy and the outside world. He said he recalls how much he looked forward to its weekly visits when he was a youth in rural Door County.

"I think my story is very similar to most people who lived where there was a regional bookmobile," Sawyer said. "It was such a big part of growing up in the '60s and '70s in Door County. … It went to all the schools, from Washington Island to Southern Door. There's a lot of fond memories.

"We're really looking to bring back the smiles, the interest in reading. Literacy has been such a big thing recently. We're trying to bring books to kids all across Door County."

And he believes the effort is succeeding and will succeed, based on the response from county residents in terms of donations (of funds and books), volunteer work on the restoration and the memories they've shared with him about the bookmobile. That includes the Village of Egg Harbor offering a lease to the group for space to house the bookmobile and PC Junction in Baileys Harbor offering storage space for books.

"The community has just embraced this restoration, bringing this back," Sawyer said. "We've heard so many stories about their using the bookmobile."

Write On's 'Mothers & Others' is first chance to see the restored bookmobile

The Door County Bookmobile makes its first public appearance since its complete restoration during the "Mothers & Others Day" open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Write On, Door County. During the event, the bookmobile will host readings of children’s books, and 50 free copies will be given away of the new children’s book "Gaga Mistake Day" by Susan Straub, recent Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Emma Straub and Jessica Love.

Write On will hold its "Mothers & Others Day" to celebrate the mothers and others "who shaped (people's) lives with love, wisdom and kindness," a news release from the organization said. Readers and writers of all ages are welcome for fun writing and creative activities, indoors and out.

Opening the event is the dedication of Write On’s new Olson Family Memorial Council Ring at 10 a.m. The memorial is dedicated to Yvonne Bevry Olson and Jane Anne Perkey, two mothers who inspired a lifelong love of reading and writing in their families and thus inspired the day's celebration. The communal outdoor meeting space, designed by Ralph Murre, features seating, a fireplace and a sculptural pergola, which pays homage to the original farmhouse that once stood on the Write On property.

The council ring was a gift of Ted and Lady Olson and was designed by architect and past Door County Poet Laureate Ralph Murre. Featuring a fireplace and stone benches, the council ring and sculptural pergola create a communal space incorporating the chimney of the property’s original farmhouse.

The council ring will be used for outdoor classes, author readings, meetings and a place to just sit and take in the natural surroundings. It also serves as the centerpiece of the Writer’s Walk, a 1.5-mile hiking path through 59 acres of woods lined with birches and wildflowers and featuring carved cedar benches. Hikers also can get a glimpse of late Door County author Norbert Blei’s chicken coop-turned-writing retreat.

Guided hikes along the Writer’s Walk are part of the day's event. Other activities include creative writing and art projects for children and adults (including the chance to make a Mother’s Day card), readings by students and local authors in the council ring, a storytelling booth and audio recording center, live music and poetry, and the readings and book giveaway at the bookmobile. Mauricio’s Mexican food truck will be on hand.

Write On, Door County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire and engage readers and writers of all ages at all stages. It is at 4210 Juddville Road, Fish Creek. No charge is required to attend "Mothers & Others Day." For more information, visit writeondoorcounty.org .

OCA Moscow Representation Church hosts World Aids Day service, roundtable

MOSCOW, RUSSIA [OCA Communications] — The need to educate people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and to offer loving and non-judgmental ministry to those suffering from the disease was emphasized at a roundtable discussion sponsored by the Orthodox Church in America’s Representation Church of the Great Martyr Catherine here on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2005.

The gathering opened with the celebration of a Service of Intercession for those suffering from the disease, celebrated by Archimandrite Zacchaeus, OCA representative to the Moscow Patriarchate, who organized the gathering. At the conclusion of the service, a statement marking World AIDS Day from His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman , was read. Archimandrite Zacchaeus also delivered a sermon in which he emphasized the importance of ministering to the disease’s victims in a compassionate manner.

Following the prayer service, Archimandrite Zacchaeus hosted a roundtable discussion was held at a local conference center, at which specialists in the prevention of HIV/AIDS, including the Priestmonk Anatoly [Berestev], discussed ways in which the Russian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church in America’s Representation in Moscow, the US Embassy in Moscow, and other healthcare organizations could collaborate in the distribution of HIV/AIDS prevention information and in ministering to those infected with the disease.

“The rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in eastern and central Europe has been widely reported,” said the Very Rev. John Matusiak, OCA communications director. “The need to address the issue, not only in terms of educating the public in the area of prevention but also in providing compassionate ministry to those already infected, is crucial. The roundtable was an important step in bringing together the healthcare community and the Church in tackling the pandemic in a wholistic and balanced manner, ministering to the soul as well as the body.”

Among those attending the service were representatives of the US Embassy in Moscow, including Ms. Lisa Carty, the wife of the US Ambassador to the Russian Federation; Mrs. Ludmilla V. Stebelkova, Deputy of the Moscow Duma; Mr. Terry Myers, the Director of the US Agency for International Development [USAID]; Ms. Margarita Nelubova of the Center for the War on AIDS of the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate; Mr. Alexei Nikiforov, of the organization “Doctors without Borders”; and numerous representatives of Alcoholics Anonymous, St. Seraphim House of Mercy, Healthy Russia, the International Women’s Club, and other organizations.
