Creative Writing institutionalizes apprenticeship, the manner by which young writers learn their craft from more experienced writers; and the workshop, by which they learn from their peers. By putting these methods alongside the academic study of literary and critical texts, the creative process, and the pertinent contexts that influence literary production, the program aims to produce writers who are competent in the craft of their chosen genre specialty (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama) while remaining aware of literature's place and influence in one's life and one's society.

BFA Creative Writing Program

bfa creative writing ateneo

Co-hosts Virtual Reading Event with 30 BIPOC Women Writers

TSAILE, AZ — On Thursday, September 22, 2022, Diné College’s BFA in Creative Writing Program launched the 2022-2023 academic year with a virtual reading for a newly-released anthology, Nonwhite and Woman: 131 Micro-Essays on Being in the World (ISBN: 978-1-949116-69-4). The event was co-hosted with Woodhall Press and the anthology’s executive editor, Darien Hsu Gee, along with 30 of the writers who were contributors to the book. All contributors are women of color.

There were 117 registered online participants, including the panelists, who attended the two-hour event to listen to the authors read their work and answer questions about writing micro and the creative process. Each micro essay is 300 words or less—true stories that speak to otherness, familial relationships, impossible beauty standards, ancestral heritage, coming of age, and owning one’s place in the world.

“People asked us, why micro? For the past few years, I’ve been doing a lot of writing and teaching on micro narratives…it was even the topic of my MFA thesis. A lot of people are familiar with flash, which is around 750-1000 words, but micro is much more compact,” said Gee. “It’s a very precise, short form.”

Gee added during the online event, “Crafting a micro narrative, be it fiction, prose poetry, or a micro essay like the ones contained in our anthology, is about true decision making, about tuning in deliberately and with great focus and care to what is wanting to be said or shared in a moment. We wanted to include as many voices as possible in this book, and micro was the perfect fit.”

Shaina Nez, a second-year doctoral scholar and Creative Writing department faculty member, was also a contributor to the collection. “Writing micro was a learning a new process, unfolding these experiences during a pandemic required a liminal space. I reflected mostly on my day-to-day with my daughter and that was a metaphor to what I perceived as coloring within a white space. Using pieces of Diné Bizaad in my micro-essay, “Hazʼą́,” I was providing a space for my daughter, self, and the world looking at self-image what it will mean for my daughter’s future as a Diné and Bilagáana woman,” Nez said.

The Nonwhite and Woman anthology includes author commentaries, discussion questions for further exploration, resources for additional reading, and a guide to writing micro essays. Perfect for personal or classroom use; the anthology is available for purchase through the following websites:

Rofel brion recalls and reimagines the creative writing program.

Martin V. Villanueva , Ateneo de Manila University Follow

Document Type

Publication date.

As of this writing; only Rofel Brion and I have served as coordinators of the BFA Creative Writing program under the Department of Fine Arts. Although I am a graduate of the program he cofounded; we’ve never had a conversation about the program. Since Rofel’s time as its coordinator; the program has grown (and; hopefully; grown up a bit too) to having over 20 graduating students and a total of more than 150 majors across four year-levels in 2021; a year before the twentieth anniversary of the pilot batch of three. Rofel has done other and more significant things for Ateneo and in literature; and the CW program is but a small and relatively recent plot point in the story of Ateneo writing. But I thought I’d take advantage of the festschrift to finally speak to Rofel about the program and his perspectives on mentoring creative writing students.

In Conversation With

Why the boy was scooped out of the sewer.

Peter Zaragoza Mayshle sat down with Cyan Abad-Jugo and Martin Villanueva in the Emmanuel S. Torres Literary Arts Room in the George SK Ty Learning Innovation Wing of Areté last August 8, 2018. Mayshle read from a novel-in-progress, Judas Republic, and discussed a story’s seed, a narrative’s structure, notions of time and timeliness in fiction, and the process of developing a work that creates a world and characters out of an actual news article about a body found in the Manila sewage system.

bfa creative writing ateneo

Mayshle received a PhD in English, Composition, and Rhetoric from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. His stories have appeared in The Manila Times, The Philippines Free Press, Mandala Journal, Every Day Fiction, Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine, and Flash Fiction International. He currently teaches writing and rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University.

Abad-Jugo teaches with the Departments of English, Fine Arts, and Interdisciplinary Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University where she also advises BFA Creative Writing seniors. Villanueva is Chair of the Department of Fine Arts, is Associate Editor for the Literary Section of Kritika Kultura , and helps coordinate programming for Areté.

This conversation is the first of a series that will feature authors discussing their work, process, and practice. The series is produced by Areté in collaboration with Kritika Kultura and the Department of Fine Arts’s BFA Creative Writing program. The readings and conversations are recorded in the room named in honor of Emmanuel Torres, the poet, critic, and literature professor who was also the first and longtime curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery.
