One of the first things you notice upon meeting Asake is his name—all five letters of the Nigerian singer’s stage moniker are tattooed in big, unmissable ink across his neck.

For another entertainer, this might imply bold vanity and solipsism; for the 29-year-old artist, it symbolizes determination. “In Nigeria, if you have a tattoo on your neck, you can’t work anywhere,” Asake explains. “I can’t work for any company. I can’t sell anything.” Asake got the tattoo at a time when he felt especially discouraged, beaten down, and unsure about this music thing. “I was tired,” he recalls. “I felt like, I don’t want to keep trying.” His response to those feelings of doubt? To double down and give himself no other option. To get the tattoo as he was still becoming the Asake we know now—the chart--topping Afrobeats singer poised to be the genre’s next big crossover star—was to essentially lock himself into staying the course, and conquering. There could be no other move.

Much has been made of Asake’s so-called meteoric rise, how he burst onto the Afrobeats scene with his debut album, 2022’s Mr. Money With the Vibe, and hasn’t stopped climbing to new heights since. It didn’t feel so quick to Asake. “You have to understand: I got there in two years, but I’ve been working for years,” he says. “People are counting the days you’re successful. They don’t count the days you’ve been working toward it. Nobody gives a fuck about that.”

We’re sitting in the rooftop lounge at the West Hollywood Edition hotel, overlooking an uncharacteristically dreary city wrapping up its fifth straight day of rain. Asake’s spirits are hardly dimmed. He just attended his first Grammys ceremony, where he was nominated for the inaugural awarding of best African music performance. He lost to Tyla, for her inescapable smash hit “Water,” but he isn’t pressed. “It’s not a loss for me,” he tells me, explaining that he was excited to be there and soak in the energy of a new experience. “I might just get more next year. But in my head I was not even taking it too seriously. I appreciate the fact that they nominated me—I won’t lie, that’s a lot to me. Even me, I didn’t see that coming this soon. I’m relaxed about it. Maybe because I know there will be a day that win will come.”

Asake, who was born Ololade Ahmed—Asake is his mother’s name—has got his dreads tucked neatly under a Dad hat that he’s pulled low, just above his big, piercing eyes. Emblazoned on the hat is the phrase “I Got Lucky.” Asake’s good fortune started when the songs he’d been making in school, and then out of it, gained traction in Lagos. Gauging the response, he made more songs, including the track that would soon become his breakout hit, “Mr. Money,” which caught the attention of Olamide, the veteran Nigerian recording artist and label founder responsible for helping many Afrobeats artists achieve mainstream success. Asake put out an EP in 2022 with an Olamide feature and the hit song “Sungba,” which teed up a major-label deal: Empire wanted a full-length album, and quickly.

Afrobeats was suddenly the hottest sound on the global music scene, gaining rapid momentum in the US with the mainstream success of stars like Burna Boy, Tems, and Wizkid. Of course, pop music has a nasty habit of narrowing the playing field when a subgenre goes wide; tons of new artists bubble up, but there’s apparently room for only so many superstar representatives at one time. How, then, has Asake broken through? For one, his music is a thrilling mash-up of several different regional influences: He sings in his native Yoruba tongue, while weaving in South African amapiano house sounds alongside the typical up-tempo rhythms of Afrobeats to create a style closer to fuji, the Yoruba music popularized by artists like Barrister in the 1970s, whom Asake cites along with Fela Kuti, as an influence. Reverse engineering a new sound out of several was hardly his intent but rather just a natural product of his upbringing. “My music is just me,” Asake says. “It’s not something I can really explain. The thing is, I feel like the kind of music I listened to while growing up shapes who I am.”

He tells me that he’s in a constant search for higher evolution. “I always want to step it up,” Asake says, growing animated. “And I love it.” He’s talking now of his creative process and the hunger to grow as an artist. “It’s a bit stressful. Trying to get better is like having armor and scissors, and carving yourself. So it takes bone, it takes flesh. But at the end of the day, I know what always makes sense for me is, after all the stress, when I drop it and people say, ‘Wow.’ ” That, he says, is the feeling he’s chasing.

On the stage Asake is chasing a particular sort of vibe too. His live-wire concert style has earned his shows a reputation for their grandiosity and energy. He plays with a full band, and the videos of his shows that go viral feature things like Asake throwing himself into crowds, or him smashing a guitar.

A born performer, Asake used fashion as a kid to express himself: “Putting pieces together, trying to be different among everybody.” That spirit persists in a wild sartorial style that today features bursts of bright colors and funky remixes of traditional pieces—like the pinstripe suit and expressionist--style tie he wore on his last album cover. It’s chaos tempered by taste; proof of his talent for stirring styles together.

His approach to music is similar. Inspiration came first from his parents and the culture he grew up in, but Asake was drawn to dancing before singing, and says he has no great desire to be in front of the camera. At university he studied art, theater, and film directing, and taught dance. He jokes with bracing honesty that he switched from dancing to singing because that’s where the real money is. Lamenting the lack of opportunities for dancers, I point out that there should be a Grammy Award acknowledging choreography; without missing a beat Asake dryly retorts that if that were the case, “they might just reward one white guy who started dancing two years ago.”

Despite his high-octane performance style, offstage Asake is reserved—eager to recede into the background and be left to his own devices, a showman who would rather keep to himself. He seems allergic to a lot of the behavior you might associate with ascendant stardom. When we talk about his Grammys experience, I jokingly ask if he was one of the many celebrities queued up in the theme-park-length line that formed around Beyoncé during every commercial break. “I’ll never do that,” he says, laughing. “I love Beyoncé, but I’ll never stress myself for any human, or make myself feel important in front of any human.”

He prides himself on his ability to read people, and their energies, almost instantly—a talent that seems so far to have been helpful in achieving success in the music business. “I can tell when I see somebody with pure mind, pure heart, good intentions,” he says, thinking of an interaction recently caught on video as he met 21 Savage for the first time. The commotion of the moment made hearing and talking impossible, but that didn’t matter. “I didn’t understand one thing he said to me, because there was a lot going on,” Asake says. “But I could tell he’s a very real person and he’s my kind of person.”

Given the enormous influence of Afrobeats right now, it’s easy to surmise that if Asake maintains his current trajectory, he could become one of the hottest singers on the planet before too long. The artistic evolution that occurred, quickly, between his first and second albums was striking to critics. The debut, Mr. Money, was marked by a wave of feel-good anthems, while last summer’s Work of Art showed Asake wrestling in real time with the changes wrought by money, fame, and success. Most interestingly, he felt compelled to deflate the mounting mythmaking that was developing around him. About the debut record, he says, “I wanted to be myself—that guy that wants money, that wants to go to the strip club, that wants to party, smoke, chill.” With the follow---up, he wanted to plumb a little deeper. “People don’t really know me because I’m quiet,” he says. “So everybody started seeing me as mystery. Work of Art is just for them to know me. You have to understand I’m human, but you can’t just deny the heart in me.”

He’s at work on his third album now, surely aware that it will be greeted with even more anticipation thanks to the Grammy nomination and his growing acclaim. He appears thrilled by the chance to change and grow and defy expectations. “I’ll never limit myself on one thing. I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do an all reggae album. Maybe that’s where God just directs me to,” he says with a shrug. “For me to be able to do Mr. Money and people love it, that means it is inside me. It’s just for me to try to always bring it out, and be focused and always do it. It is inside you. I always say any artist that make a hit song—they can always make 40,000 hit songs. But it’s just like, if you forget yourself, then you can’t make the song again. The problem is not to forget who you are.”

He returns to that idea like a mantra. It’s a chief concern of Asake’s, and has been before he started to get famous: His first tattoo, even before the neck tat, was the phrase “Stay real,” written across both of his hands. He’s noticed that it’s a goal that’s made harder in an environment like Los Angeles, a place that can “trigger you to be more than what you are” and where he spends time for work when he’s not in Lagos. “But I feel like everybody’s going through the same thing in this place. People find it hard to be normal, to be original.” Asake tells me that his ultimate prayer is that he makes his dreams of fame come true, without ever losing the common touch. He wants to be “so rich and so big and so powerful,” he says, while retaining the skill to “be around people, and be comfortable.”

Maybe it’s a luxury afforded to someone whose dividends seem to have paid off quickly, but Asake seems remarkably relaxed for someone at the precipice of such a big moment. He admits that he’s not in a hurry. “Anything that requires time is going to be the best,” he says. “I’m telling you, my bro. What people are scared of is patience. People are scared. But if you can absorb, if you can be patient and have time, he who eats last, eats best.”

“I’m just on my journey,” he says serenely as the last little bit of light peeking through the storm clouds fades away to dusk. “If I tell you I know the things I’m planning or waiting for, I’m just lying.” Now we’re starting to test the limit of believable nonchalance for an artist this successful, I point out. He relents—there is, of course, a loose plan that he’s keeping close to the vest. “I can’t sit down and be telling you my five-year plan,” he says, smirking mischievously. “But, I do have one. To be in this position, you have to have a plan.”

Asake on Success, Spirituality, and Searching for Peace Amid the Chaos

By Nelson C.J.

Nelson C.J.

Asake

T HE TWO MEN HAVE BEEN WAVING for a while before Asake sees them. They’re wearing dirty white T-shirts on the balcony of a tall construction project in Victoria Island, an upscale neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria. It took them a minute to figure out who was standing in the garden of a nearby restaurant, with his distinctly lean frame and shock of gold dreads — but since they did, they’ve been trying to get his attention.

At first, Asake seems taken aback, perhaps unsure of how people standing that high up managed to spot him, but his face lights up after a while, and he waves back. “ Make una no fall o, ” he jokes: “You people should not fall.”

It’s a Sunday morning in early May, and although the sun isn’t very high yet, the weather is already disagreeably humid. I’m meeting Asake at Nok, a restaurant located behind Alára Lagos, one of the city’s most famous concept stores.

In person, Asake, 28, has a small frame, but an imposing personality. His large, dark eyes hold a world of expressions; bright with mischief when he begins to crack one of his many jokes, dim and misty when thinking deeply about a question. The way he stares right into people’s eyes when he speaks to them gives the impression that he is not afraid of anyone.

While he felt in those days that “God is not doing enough for me,” he sees that time now as a necessary step of paying dues. “Those were the days for me to see how the life of entertainment is, without me being somebody,” he says. “Everybody wants to be Number One. Everybody in this life, I can bet it — even the pastor of our church. You just have to go through some stages and learn, so that when the thing you are praying for happens, you know how to say, ‘Ah, yeah, I worked for this shit.’”

Born Ahmed Ololade in a modest household, Asake came onto the Afrobeats scene with a sound that was fresh and difficult to put in context. He was grounded in the storytelling techniques of street-pop artists who came before him, but his sound also borrowed the talking-drum bounce of Fuji music, a genre popular among Nigeria’s Yoruba people. He grew up listening to pioneering Fuji acts like K1 De Ultimate and Ayinde Barrister. The latter artist is his favorite to this day: “I love Barrister a lot, because of the soul in his voice,” he says. “When you talk about music, real music, it is Barrister’s for me.” He also listened to songs from the Cherubim and Seraphim church, known for its bells and conga drums, and the white gowns members wear to church. “I just like spirituality, songs that can wake your spirit,” he says. “I need things to always spark me.”

Even Asake is still processing what it’s like to be that guy. “I thank God,” he tells me. “Even me, I did not know that I would be that guy. I was dreaming, the way Nigerians dream that they will be a superstar one day.”

On its release last September, Mr. Money With the Vibe won rave reviews and recorded the biggest opening weekend for an African album in Apple Music’s history; Asake ended up with 1.24 billion global on-demand streams in 2022, according to Luminate data. He began numerous sold-out world tours, where venues frequently overflowed with fans. The situation felt like it could spin out of control, and in December, it did: Two people, Rebecca Ikumelo and Gaby Hutchinson, died and seven more were injured after a crowd crush at one of his shows in South London. Asake declines to discuss the incident with me in detail, but at the time, he issued a statement expressing his devastation.

In less than a year, Asake’s life has seen a sharp change in course. Some of what that has meant for him is made clear on his second album, Work of Art , which he made while on the road and finally released this June. “The inspiration is not different,” he says. “It just got deeper and made me more conscious that all eyes are on me.”

Asake spends much of the album working through feelings of shock at how different his life is now, and gradually arriving at acceptance. It’s notably a project that favors deliberate storytelling over the hooks he’s best known for. “I want my listeners to see the artistic side of me,” he says. “I want my listeners to feel the soul in my vocals and how I express myself. I take my time to create these songs because I want to create a lasting experience.”

To maintain his spiritual grounding, Asake prays each morning, and he listens to his favorite gospel songs. “I learned these at the start of my life,” he says. “So I can’t forget [them].” The bottom line for him, he adds: “I am still the same guy, with the same dream, but just on a different level.”

Those around Asake say they’re doing what they can to keep him grounded in the life he had before fame came around. “Asake has got heart,” his manager, Stephen Nana, tells me. “I know the weight he pulls. He should be walking on air — like, people shouldn’t be able to access him and all that. But Asake’s not that kind of guy. He still wants to eat the roadside food he used to eat back in the day. It’s just that he can’t go there to get it himself.”

After speaking for a while, Asake leaves to go into the Alára store. Following him are a security guard, a few friends, his manager, and the personal stylist who began working with Asake earlier this year.

Asake’s fashion sense is an ever-evolving thing. Gucci, Rick Owens, and Balenciaga are some of his favorite brands; his most notable look was a baggy Balenciaga pants top that helped make him a rising fashion icon in Nigeria when he wore it last fall.

The songs “Don’t Hype Me” and “Yan Yan” from 2021 contributed to the expectation for Ololade Asake, his debut EP from 2022. The EP’s opening track, “Omo Ope,” which featured Nigerian artist Olamide, later became Asake’s biggest hit.

Asake’s first commercial releases, beginning with the song Lady in 2020, didn’t really portend a seismic shift in Nigeria’s teeming Afrobeats scene . The 27-year-old genre-blending Nigerian singer and rapper has a tongue-in-cheek delivery and jocular persona. He writes nonsensical, self-deprecating rhymes with hip-hop influenced consumerist themes and could easily be mistaken for a less threatening Naira Marley – a street savvy Afrobeats mainstay-wannabe.

And then, in September 2022, came his scorching 30-minute long album, Mr. Money With The Vibe . It’s an engrossing potpourri of music styles, voices and attitudes that reveal a breadth of ambition that music lovers have not seen in a long time. His rise to global reckoning was sealed by sold out shows in Atlanta and London and a collaboration with Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage on the hit Loaded .

Currently signed to Afrobeats linchpin Olamide’s Empire-distributed YBNL label , which is also home to the equally talented Fireboy DML , Asake finds himself in quite impressive company. Olamide himself is pretty adept in blending the sonic elements that form the basis of Asake’s own creative template.

It seems Asake, a Lagosian, is also embracing amapiano , the South African house music subgenre taking the world by storm . Characterised by jazzy, sometimes bluesy, house grooves punctuated by frequent log drum infusions, amapiano has spread across the continent and is redefining and re-energising popular dance music. Asake is adding his own distinctive chameleonic qualities to it.

His sweeping take on Afrobeats, fuji , amapiano, Lagosian street slang and the urban sounds of black America has an immediate impact as an astonishing blast of creativity.

Who is Asake?

Born Ahmed Ololade, Asake is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University drama department who burst into the music scene without apparent warning. Asake is actually his mother’s name. He is also a highly inventive student of Nigeria’s Yoruba language, his main medium of expression.

He uses slang fresh from the streets coupled with expressions popularised by fuji (an Islam-inflected south-west Nigeria form of popular music) and the entire Isale Eko (downtown Lagos) army of street-dwelling miscreants. Asake brazenly embraces urban “hood” culture and its seductive promise of social rebellion. Yet at the same time, he is not the kind of guy moms loathe because he’s also endowed with a winning comic gift and bad-boy-on-the-mend sort of aura.

Nigerian megastar Burna Boy was quick to partner on a remix of Asake’s Afrobeats-cum-amapiano track Sungba , but didn’t bring anything new to the table apart from his certified hit-making status and brooding sense of menace. Asake, on the other hand, is a live wire linguistic conduit, spicing up Yoruba street lingo with the dexterity of a street urchin, complete with witty banter and double meanings.

Is his debut album any good?

Songs such as Peace Be Unto You , Terminator and Joha only lavishly build on the eruptive momentum of Organise , the opening track of Mr. Money With The Vibe. The album’s blistering pace is one of its most distinctive features, followed by its seamless splicing (editing). Pace and sequencing are the key elements of this exquisite piece of sonic art.

Building from this is Asake’s mastery of a rich range of music styles, from amapiano and Afrobeats to R&B , hip-hop and Jamaican dub . He burns through these illustrious music archives at great speed and, surprisingly, with some depth. He’s able to convert gospel-sounding ditties into profane and rabble-rousing secular anthems. This ability is one of the secrets of the album’s somewhat unexpected artistic success.

Most of Asake’s videos off the album are shot by TG Omori , the intriguingly auteurish cinematographer and leading West African music video director. They try to capture the frenetic pace and layering of the songs. The scenes are eclectic and quirky by turns. Joha appears shot in the arid expanses of Arizona or some such place. Peace Be Unto You sweeps up Lagos’s sprawling urban chaos and intensity. Terminator offers a slow burning account of simmering foreboding, sassiness and sexual gratification. Through it all, Asake adopts a broad selection of personas and roles.

Beyond amapiano

When South African amapiano stars such as DBN Gogo and Major League DJz heard Mr. Money With The Vibe, they expressed their awe and admiration. Major League DJz tweeted that “Asake is amapiano”. DBN Gogo went as far as to say the album was so good that South African amapiano musicians had to come together to fend off the formidable Nigerian challenge. Obviously, she’s at a loss regarding Asake’s diversity of cultural and musical inspirations.

Indeed, Asake can be difficult to categorise. He gleefully avails himself of cultural resources and archives with confidence, panache and skill.

Asake’s free-wheeling sonic eclecticism might be the key to his meteoric success. Joyous choral singing, ebullient fuji trimmings, repurposed iconic R&B grooves, street patois, good natured urban hooliganism, immediacy and openness also need to be added into the already intriguing mix. Surely, this is all beyond ordinary amapiano. And that makes it all the more appealing.

Famous as one of the Afrobeats sensations on the rise, Asake, aka Mr. Money, born Ahmed Ololade, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter known for his fusion of Afrobeats, Fuji Fusion, Afropop, and Amapiano. Inspired by icons like Wizkid and Olamide, he transitioned from dance to music after his undergraduate studies His breakthrough came in 2020 with the hit "Lady" and the chart-topping "Mr. Money" in 2022. Signed to YBNL Nation, he released the EP "Ololade" and his debut album "Mr. Money with the Vibe" in 2022, achieving international success on the Billboard 200. Asake is arguably one of 2022’s biggest breakout stars. After years of being part of Nigeria’s underground Afrobeats scene, in the past 12 months the 27-year-old Lagos-based singer has collaborated with Burna Boy and released his debut album, Mr Money With the Vibe, to widespread critical and commercial success.

Released in September, Mr Money With the Vibe debuted at No 22 on the UK albums chart, and is the highest-charting Nigerian album of all time on the US charts. It was named by Rolling Stone, The Fader and the New York Times as one of the year’s best records, with the NYT’s Jon Caramanica describing the album as “enveloping and inspirational, mellow but assured”.

Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, was recently nominated for BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2023 award, for artists breaking through in the UK.

As his international renown has grown, Asake has become known for his spectacular – and, occasionally, erratic – live shows. Earlier this year, he went viral after bringing a live goat on stage in Atlanta; he was reportedly booed at a show in Birmingham earlier this week after arriving on stage late. Later in the show he handed out cash to fans in the front row.

Asake’s tour in support of Mr Money With the Vibe is his first run of international shows, and demand in London – one of the world’s main Afrobeats hubs outside Lagos and Accra – was particularly huge, with tickets for all three Brixton Academy shows selling out in minutes.

While Asake is known to be cryptic with the things he shares, seldom sharing videos or photos of his personal life or belongings, he once shared an image of his car. While announcing his new house on social media, he was spotted standing next to a white Range Rover. The car was packed just in front of the house, proving that it also belonged to him.
