book reviews service

BookRazor

You Write, We Help You Get Book Reviews

stars

Are you looking for legitimate, honest, qualified reviewers for your book? If so, you've come to the right place. Our Premium Book Review Research Service has helped thousands of authors, publishers, and industry authorities.

To all loyal BookRazor fans,

Amazon changed their reviewer profile page layout recently, and they have removed access to all publicly displayed reviewer email addresses. This means we can no longer legitimately obtain reviewer contact information. Due to this, we will be halting our service. I can't, in good conscience, continue to provide reviewer contact information if it isn't explicitly publicly available - anything other than this would be an invasion of privacy.

If Amazon decides to change this in the future, we will consider re-opening, but until then, BookRazor will not be accepting any orders. Thank you sincerely for your support over the past 4 years, and may we meet again. Kind regards, Dane, BookRazor

Andrew Spriggs

Hello, fellow independent author. Does this sound at all familiar?

Frustrated trying to get reviews

  • You’ve started looking for more reviews, but nothing has worked so far
  • Experts recommend asking your list for reviews, but you don't even have a list
  • You were told to put a review request in your book, but you have no sales so no one sees the request
  • Other book review sites give you dud leads, or don't even respond to your inquiries

...or have you been stuck trying to get reviews by doing any of these things?

  • Asked family and friends for reviews (even though this is against the policy of most online e-book retailers)
  • Offered to exchange/swap reviews (also prohibited)
  • Put review requests in your book, but no one sees it since you just started out
  • Purchased reviews (also prohibited, and can be ridiculously expensive)
  • Asked for reviews on social media (it's so hard to get traction with this if you don't even have a following)
  • Set up a bunch of free promotions, and all you got was a bunch of freeloaders

Do You Really Need Reviews? (Hint: You Kind of Do...)

Reviews influence ranking and sales. It's been documented time and time again that the number of reviews you have is one of the greatest factors influencing your overall ranking.

Credibility

A larger number of reviews means greater credibility. Your family and friends shouldn't be the only people supporting your book!

Receive Public Feedback

Sometimes, the best source of feedback is from those who actually read your book (makes sense, right?). Listen and learn how you can make your next book even better!

Get INSPIRED

Are you feeling discouraged? Reading the positive reviews on your book can fire up your writing energy levels.

Basically, if You Need Book Reviews, We Can Help!

(...but first, here are some more people raving about our service)

It was a difficult process before...

It was a difficult process before - it was almost impossible for me to find people to review my book. BookRazor just might be the best investment you can make for your book!

I would recommend this service to all authors. We all want to get our book reviewed, and this is a ton of help.

Well Worth the Money

I randomly stumbled across BookRazor, and decided to give it a shot. I quickly found out they are miracle workers. The results they get you are well worth the money. They do the tedious boring work for you and do hell of a job. It couldn't have gone any better. It took a little longer then expected since all the books like mine are older. Because of this a lot of the information they were finding was outdated. But this is where they really proved themselves. Instead of cutting corners and just using it anyway, they got back to me and asked for more suggestions. Dane at BookRazor even threw a couple extra bells and whistles my way for the inconvenience. Once I got my results, I heard back from more than half. As a result, I doubled my reviews on Amazon, and even got a Top 500 reviewer to leave me a 5 star review. The reviews are even still coming in.

As a first time writer, I sometimes feel like I just throw money at stuff and see if it works. I threw money at this, and for once, it was actually a good use of money. BookRazor is a genius idea, and I will definitely use them in the future.

Results in the Good Old Way

As an author, the biggest block for me was to get that initial reviews. Writing a book seemed better. I've already published 4 books but getting a review and asking friends and other known contacts seemed really after some time. You can ask once but not keep on asking.

I came to know about BookRazor through Steve Scott. You want results, try this. Does it land your crazy reviews in your plate. Not at all! But, I was much relieved when I got responses from ACTUAL reviewers from Amazon. I was skeptical on the folks who will actually review but they do!

I'll give you numbers. I tried for public speaking (seems to be a small niche). But, from 150 emails, I got around 20 to 25 responses and, at the time of writing this, 7 have already left a review. If you are reading this, I want to help you with this tip...

Contact reviewers 2 weeks before launch date. Then, publish print version 1 week before the launch date and keep your kindle version in pre-order for 1 week. Use that 1 week to collect all the reviews. Then, have your promotions lined up....You are sure to hit the best sellers list....that's what I did for my book !

I've been asking any friends for the chance to get eyes on to review the book and that process doesn't scale in producing results. Plus, asking your friends to help out is a naturally limited pool, so extending my potential audience is greatly valuable.

The response from potential reviewers have been great at a 26% response rate, I may have even gained some fans in the process.

I'd definitely recommend BookRazor to other authors if they want to test the pulse of your potential audience.

An Effective Way to Connect with Real Readers

I wish I had discovered BookRazor sooner! The service has allowed our small publishing company to connect with dozens of real readers who like quality books. The response rate is so much better than anything I have tried before. It's a huge timesaver, and well worth the cost.

(BR) How did you manage to get reviews before? Was it a difficult process? (Sandi) Friends, family and YES it was very difficult.

(BR) What would you tell someone who is hesitant about buying? (Sandi) The readers I reached out to were so thrilled to have the opportunity. I was surprised.

(BR) Would you recommend our services? If so, who would you recommend this to and why? (Sandi) Absolutely. Anyone publishing a book.

(BR) If you could talk to someone thinking about purchasing our service, what would you tell them? (Sandi) You get more than what you pay for. It requires some work to get the most benefit (you will have to send some emails) but everything is laid out for you and made very simple.

(Sandi) Thank you! I sent about 130 emails asking for reviews and got 26.

Before BookRazor, getting reviews meant countless hours scouring Amazon user profiles; gifting away expensive paperbacks; and throwing money at marketing schemes, all in the hopes of finding valid and interested reviewers. And, often with dismal results.

BookRazor just makes financial sense. Take the 100 reviewer package, for example. The time you would spend building a list of 100 potential reviewers could be spent writing your next book. In fact, you'd probably get half of it done in the time it takes to build the kind of list BookRazor can deliver within a week.

I highly recommend BookRazor for writers and book promoters who need qualified Amazon reviews but don't have the time to build a rock-solid list. The best part is that the emails you buy are yours forever, so you can build meaningful, long-term relationships with readers who are interested in your work.

I would tell anyone thinking about using BookRazor to try and build a list of Amazon reviewers yourself. Fifteen minutes in and I guarantee you'll be purchasing a package from BookRazor.com.

In the high-stress world of book marketing, BookRazor is a service every author should utilize. The readers I've met through BookRazor have shown genuine enthusiasm for my book, and have been happy to help spread the word to other like-minded bibliophiles. With BookRazor, I can get back to writing again—which is exactly what my readers want.

Getting reviews was tough. You had to go through trial and errors to find someone on Amazon to review. Very long process. Lots of outdated e-mails.

Using this service really helps you to focus on active reviewers that have an interest in the types of book you have written.

I would recommend this to self-published authors seeking to build up their stable of reviews for marketing and promotion.

This was a low cost / high value investment. You just have to be patient because it takes time for solicited reviewers to read your book.

Love BookRazor!

I've used this service twice now and am very happy with the results. The first order I did was a smaller one, and I got great results then but I found it's better to purchase in large batches so you have a better chance to get even more responses. I also think that taking the time to address the reviewers by name in each email you send out makes a big difference rather than a generic email, but that's my opinion. A large portion of reviewers I contacted were responsive and did follow through with their reviews as well, so I'd definitely say it's a win for me! I don't have the time to search for reviewers myself, so this takes the leg work out of the process.

First Experience with BookRazor

Was a great one. I didn't know what to expect. Once I worked my way through it - understanding wise - the benefits of this service just ballooned in value and importance.

The premise is realistic. The results are there, for you to see, and your efforts in contacting possible reader/reviewers actually yield results. That's more than many other services that deal with reader-reviews can claim - or promise.

Out of 80 reader/reviewers contacted, 22 responded and 2 of those declined to review. The remaining 20 asked for the book, received it, and most of them contacted me afterward to say they received the book and would be reading it; some even gave me their time-frame as to when I might expect their review.

This was a hugely positive experience for me. Thank you, BookRazor.

Honestly WAY better than the other services I've tried

This was my first time using BookRazor and I'll definitely be a returning customer. I've tried similar services, but none have offered the responsiveness, openness, and outright results like BookRazor.

What I liked most was the targeting of Amazon readers and reviewers who are highly likely to read AND review your book. With BookRazor, you as the author have the freedom to find similar books - as who knows your book better than you? - and BookRazor takes care of the rest.

This saves you a LOT of time and effort, as you don't have to do all the meticulous searching, combing through thousands of potential reviewers for those best fitted for your book.

The BookRazor staff are also very prompt and transparent, and even provide helpful links to email templates for maximizing your response rates. Other services are not nearly as transparent or accountable - or effective.

Definitely worth the money if you're an author looking to get your book off the ground, up in the ranks, and reviewed in a timely manner. Highly recommended.

September 26, 2017

(In the past, I've) asked personal contacts for referrals and also subscribed to a PR service that included free review generating service. I was however quite disappointed with what I considered to be a very small response.

(Enter BookRazor)

BookRazor can save a ton of time and research hassle. For a modest fee, you get specifically focused information that would otherwise take many hours of your time to generate.

I highly recommend BookRazor. It is ideal for specialized niche markets such as mine. The report identified individuals who have reviewed books such as mine. This increases the likelihood that they will be interested in reviewing similar books on the same topic. It also increases the likelihood of receiving honest and authoritative reviews.

If you are into process and prefer keeping busy to achieving desired results, by all means do your own research to identify potentially helpful reviewers. If however you want the best results as soon as possible, BookRazor can help you get there.

My day one results were amazing. Of the first batch of invitations to to review my book, 25% of potential reviewers responded 'yes' within 24 hours. One of the people reply within minutes of my sending the invitation. Another one posted a 5-star review within 2 hours of my sending the invitation. What a great start to a new initiative. Yes!!!

Going the Extra Mile!

Hit a couple of snags as a first-time user of BookRazor's service. Sent a note to Dane and he responded immediately.

His professional, customer-first attitude was refreshing and turned what could have been a less-than-satisfying experience into a 100% positive one -- with terrific results. I will be using BookRazor again for my next book.

Thank you Dane!

Send Us Links to Similar Books

This is where we’ll find your potential reviewers. The  list of similar books all ows us to laser target only the people who want to read your book. This means better results for you! We typically find ~50 qualified email addresses for every 3,500 reviews we go through.

book reviews service

We Get to Work

We seek out potential reviewers based on the books you provided. During our research, we only gather the contact information of people who have publicly shared their email address on their reviewer profile. We also qualify each prospect based on a number of things. Rest assured that you're only getting the crème de la crème.

book reviews service

You Contact the Potential Reviewers

We send you a spreadsheet with the contact information of people most likely to be interested in reading and reviewing your book. Send them a quick email requesting a review (we provide a sample outreach template), reply to people who are interested in reading your book and wait for your reviews to roll in!

Our Method Surpasses Everything Else Out There. Here's Why.

bet book reviews with BookRazor today!

  • We focus on finding reviewers most likely to read and review your book. For this reason, instead of looking for the highest number of reviewers, we l ook for the most relevan t ones.
  • We could give you a list of 1,000 people reviewing a certain genre, but it’s not going to be an effective use of your time. Y ou want to email as few people as possible while getting as many reviews as possible.
  • This is why we only browse through the reviews of similar books you provide to us, and not through the entire genre and/or related genres. While it limits the number of potential reviewers we can find, we've found it greatly increases the response and review rate .

Here is an average of all our results as reported to us thus far (please note that this is an average, and your own results may vary).

My results using BookRazor, which I’m very happy with: contacted potential reviewers about a week before No Dreams Allowed went live, and from 50 emails … 48 contacted … 20 didn’t respond … 2 said no (both very polite) … 26 said yes to an ARC — and as of now, about a week and a half after the book came out, those 26 ‘y es’ answers have generated 16 reviews, all of them four and five stars (book also has one review that didn’t come from a BookRazor email) — most reviews were posted within the first couple of days after publication, and all reviewers who contacted me were very friendly and easy to work with — even got a couple of mailing list signups out of it, sweet … Plus now I have a ready-made list of people I can contact about the next book 🙂 Thank you BookRazor for being one of the best book review sites out there today!

book reviews service

I sent about 100 emails out about a month ago. I got 26 replies. Of those 19 were interested in reviewing. From those 19, I got 7 reviews so far. All the reviews were positive and 5 of them were 5 stars which speaks well of the BookRazor tactic of selecting reviewers from the pool of those who have favorably reviewed similar books. Overall, delighted with the service. Would recommend and use again, and BookRazor is truly one of the top book review sites out on the market today.

book reviews service

I used Bookrazor for my latest release WRECKED. I paid for 100 contacts. I set up the free review copies through Instafreebie using a link in the e-mail. I received 25 yes replies. At least five of these mentioned how swamped they were with review requests and when did I need the review by? I told each of them that whenever they could would be fine. I didn’t want to pressure anyone. In hind sight if I’d thrown a date at them maybe I would have garnered more.

Of the 25 that said yes, 16 actually followed through and reviewed the book.

I followed up with Thank You e-mails and received 11 replies that they would be happy to review again for me. I gave 38 copies away through Instafreebie which means 13 people took it but didn’t respond either way, which is fine. Overall I couldn’t be happier with my results from bookrazor. Everyone that replied was courteous, willing to help and surprisingly professional. I’ll be using them again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need from me to start.

In order to start, we need you to provide us with links to books similar to your own on Amazon.com.

We do not select books on your behalf and we do not accept category listings. The links *must* be to specific books on Amazon.com.

Ideally, each book should have at least 50 reviews. You can see how many total reviews we need for each package size on the order form here . This total dictates how many similar books we need you to provide us with.

Furthermore, we strongly recommend you do *not * include incredibly popular books (e.g. Harry Potter, the Girl on The train, the Hunger Games, the Da Vinci Code, Twilight, etc.) unless you are a seasoned veteran of our services.

This is because reviewers of these books are not necessarily fans of said book genre, and we generally see lower than average response rates when creating lists sourced from these.

What is BookRazor?

BookRazor is a premier reviewer contact research service.

Every order we receive is manually and meticulously cared for. We don't sell lists or re-use previous reviewers. We never have, and never will. Every order is based solely upon the links provided to us by you.

We provide you with the information we find in spreadsheet format. We also provide a sample email outreach template for you to use when contacting them directly. You can develop a relationship with these reviewers, which helps if you write a sequel in the same niche, and your list, while maybe a one-time purchase from us, can be used over and over again.

We want to be upfront and very clear about the type of service we provide, so as to ensure we operate well within Amazon's ToS.

Am I paying for reviews?

Hell no! We help you find potential reviewers by looking for people who have already left reviews for books similar to yours. You pay us for the service we perform (gathering data for you), not reviews. Paying for reviews is a big no-no. All the reviews you get from reaching out to the potential reviewers we provide will be legitimate, honest reviews.

Where does the data come from?

We browse through Amazon® reviewer profiles of people who have reviewed books similar to yours, and give you the contact information of people who have publicly shared their e-mail address on their reviewer profile (we do NOT search for it outside Amazon®).

The fact that these reviewers have chosen to publicly display their contact information shows an expressed interest in receiving review requests.

Do you guarantee I'll get a certain number of reviews?

Unfortunately we can’t give you any guarantees on that.

It all depends on how you present your book and if the potential reviewer is interested in it.

In general, you should expect - on average - at least several reviews from emailing 50 people.

How many potential reviewers can you find for me?

In an ideal world, our answer would be "as many as you want." However, we want to have an honest relationship with you, so we won’t promise you the moon. If you’re not writing in a popular genre, we probably won’t find more than a hundred or so potential reviewers for you, out of which you can expect up to 10 reviews (which is still enough to make a difference to your sales). If you write in a more popular genre, it’s likely we can give you the contact information to many more potential reviewers.

Note: if we can’t find the number of reviewers you’ve asked for, we will refund you the difference.

Are there any genres/countries that don't work with this?

If your book is “nothing like anything else” we generally can’t help you. We need similar books in order to provide the service.

We can help you as long as you can find books similar to yours with lots of reviews. It doesn't matter what country or what language your book is in.

How long does it take you to perform the service?

It depends on the size of the order. In general, we complete most jobs within 4 to 6+ days.

Does BookRazor send emails to the potential reviewers?

No. Over the course of the last year, we found the best response rates happened when the authors did the email outreach to the potential reviewers directly.

Do you guarantee only positive reviews?

No, we find potential reviewers for you who are most likely to enjoy your book, but we can’t guarantee they’ll enjoy it. If you’re asking someone for an honest review, you never know if it’s going to be positive or negative – that’s what an honest review is.

We do, however, try our best to ensure that the potential reviewers we provide you like your book.

We start by filtering only the positive reviews from the similar books you send, and going through those. We also look at each reviewer's history to see if they have a tendency to rate items well .

We've found this to be incredibly successful.

It takes a tremendous amount of time, but know that when we research your list, we are trying our utmost best to ensure you get the best possible and most positive results.

Do you offer a money back guarantee?

Yes. If you’re not 100% satisfied with our service, we will refund your money.

What does BookRazor mean?

It’s our attempt to be clever. We cut out the tasks from your daily schedule. We’re also sharp as a razor. See? So damn clever!

What if my book is on amazon.co.uk, etc.?

Our services work on any Amazon platform, regardless of the country or language. All we require are links to books similar to yours with reviews! If the links to books are on the amazon.co.uk platform, those are the reviews we will research and go through!

I have more questions. Can you help me?

Sure. Head over to the contact form page and send us your question there.

Contact Us!

IMPORTANT: Before contacting us, please be sure to read through the FAQ above. There's a really good chance that your question will have already been addressed there.

If you DON'T see the answer to your question above, drop us a line! We GUARANTEE a response within 24 hours or less. We're here 24/7 (rain, sleet, sun, snow, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes...you get the idea).

How to Get Book Reviews in 5 Steps (2024 Update)

Imagine the day of your book launch. You’re sitting in front of your computer, blissfully imagining all the five-star book reviews that will soon be yours. Yet the days pass... and the reviews don't come.

Needless to say, you'll want people to buy and read your book ASAP so they can leave you some good reviews. But you may see the Catch-22 here: in order to make your first sales, you’ll need to display positive book reviews. So how do you get the chicken before you’ve got the egg (or vice versa)?

Enter book bloggers , who are your new best friends! For this post, we asked our top Reedsy publicists to share their best tips on how to get book reviews from book bloggers — and we've condensed their advice into these five essential steps, plus a few bonus tips at the end.

You can also check out this Reedsy Live on how to get your first book reviews, with advice from author and book marketer Debbie Drum.

Those who prefer their tips in written form, let's dive right in with the very first step of the review acquisition process!

1. Identify your audience

book reviews

A quick preliminary note: you want to start the review-gathering as early as possible. If you can, plan your book review campaign 4-6 months in advance of your publication date. Because if you want your reviews to be in place by then, you’ll need to give people time to actually write them!

Now, using the "5 W’s of Storytelling," let's talk about the first thing you should be asking yourself: who? Who will be reading your book, and who is best positioned to promote it to that audience? The following tips will help you answer these questions.

Build a questionnaire

Here are a few more specific queries to help you clarify your "who":

  • Who reads in my genre?
  • What magazines, websites, forums, or blogs do they frequent?
  • Where might they find reviews of my book that will entice them to buy it?

Indeed, publicist Jessica Glenn recommends building a full-length questionnaire to identify your audience and where you might find them on the Web (or in real life!).

“Most, if not all, publicists and publishers send authors a very long questionnaire to fill out when they start their marketing plan ,” she says. “That's so we can dig into any useful piece of bio, community, or regional info to figure out who and why people will be interested in your book.”

Your questionnaire will direct you to your target audience and help you create a  proto-persona.  This is the "ideal reader" of your book, so to speak — a perfect blend of the traits you'd expect them to have. (For example, if you've written a YA paranormal romance novel, your proto-persona might be a 14-year-old girl who's obsessed with Twilight .) And whoever they are, you'll keep them in mind every time you make a marketing decision.

Think about comp titles

Another great way to get a handle on your target audience is to figure out your comparative titles — books that are a) similar to yours and b) share the same general readership. When pitching to book reviewers, these are the titles you'll use to sell your own  book . For instance, "My book is  Normal People meets The Incendiaries ."

According to Jessica, you should have at least 15 potential comp titles for your book, ideally a mix of bestsellers and well-reviewed indie titles. “Many first-time authors balk at this," says Jessica, "as they believe there is no true comp for their book — but dig deep and you'll find them!”

Comp titles are critical because they act as a compass, pointing you towards a ready-made audience that enjoys works in the same mold as yours. This is a huge help in determining your target readers, as well as which reviewers will cater to them. Speaking of which...

2. Find relevant book blogs

book reviews

Now that you’ve got a strong sense of your audience, you're ready to find blogs that will provide the best exposure to that audience. We recommend starting with our directory of 200+ book review blogs , but feel free to do your own research as well!

As you dig into book review blogs, check on these two things first:

  • Is the site active? Has the blogger published a post within the last month or so?
  • Are they currently accepting queries? If they're closed at the moment, it could be months before your book gets a review — if at all.

And if you want to confirm your book marketing strategy when it comes to book review blogs, we recommend first taking this quick quiz below!

Which book review site is right for you?

Find out here! Takes one minute.

Once you've confirmed that a book review blog is both active and open to queries, think about whether it's right for your  book. Here are some important factors to consider:

  • Genre . Don't waste your time on blogs that don't review books in your genre. "Be very mindful of a publication’s particular audience and target market when pitching for review. If their readership is science-fiction, do not pitch a commercial crime novel!” says publicist Hannah Cooper .
  • Traffic . High-traffic book blogs might seem like your highest priorities, but this isn’t necessarily true. “Don't shy away from the smaller blogs,” says publicist Beverly Bambury . “They can sometimes foster a real sense of community and starting off small is just fine."
  • Posting frequency.  Another consideration is how often the blogger in question actually publishes reviews. Too often, and your book will get lost in the shuffle; too seldom, and they're likely to lose readers. Try to strike a balance with about 1-2 reviews per week — no decent reviewer can turn them out faster than that, anyway!

Track down your comp titles' reviewers

Remember those comp titles you came up with earlier? You can use them not only to pitch your book, but also to find potential reviewers , as they will correspond perfectly with your genre and target audience.

“Once you have your 15-or-so comps, you can research where each book has been reviewed,” says Jessica. “With luck, you will find at least a couple of book reviews per title, which will give you many more outlets to investigate further.”

Now, as an author, you might be wondering: “How can I begin to find all the places where a given book was reviewed?” Don’t forget the power of Google! Try searching the following terms to find reviews for a given title:

  • [Title] + book review
  • [Title] + review
  • [Title] + Q&A

And here's one last tip to give you a boost — sign up for a "Mention" account and/or set up Google alerts to get a notification every time these titles appear online.

Once you’re armed with a bundle of suitable book review blogs, you've arrived at the third (and perhaps most crucial) step in this process. This is, of course, creating the pitches you'll send to reviewers.

3. Write pitches for them

book reviews service

Pitching a reviewer is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is a) keep it short, and and b) personalize it as much as possible. However, before we get to our publicists’ actionable tips on pitching, there’s one more thing that you absolutely HAVE to do. And that thing is...

Read the review policy!

Before you pitch any blog, make sure you read the blogger’s review policy. Some blogs will have a form to fill out; others might ask you to email them directly. Still others might not welcome any queries from self-published authors . Whatever they say, make sure that you follow it to a T.

“There are two main benefits to reading and following the review policies closely,” says Beverly. “First, you show the reviewer that you respect and appreciate them when you follow their instructions. This is important when asking someone to do you a favor.

"Second, you may find that even if the site is closed for review queries, it's open to publicity queries — where you might be able to place an excerpt or do a Q&A or occasional blog post. You'll never know if you don't take the time to read the review policy first.”

More tips for pitching reviewers

Now that you’re clear on what the blogger wants, you can start pitching them with confidence. Here are three more key tips for pitching book reviewers:

1. Never send out bulk pitches. "When you pitch each outlet individually, specifically write that you read their positive book review of your comp and what that comp title was,” says Jessica Glenn. Or if you didn't find them through a comp title, mention other  aspects of their blog and why you think they would be great to review your book!

2. Be concise and direct. “Include your title, publisher, date of release, and genre in the first paragraph,” notes Beverly Bambury. “Then you might want to include the cover copy or a brief description of the book. Finally, be direct and ask for what you want. If you want a review, ask for it! If you want an excerpt placed, ask for that.”

3. Appeal to their commercial side. “All reviewers want the opportunity to discover the next 'big thing’ — particularly with fiction — so make them feel as though they have the opportunity to get the word out first," says Hannah Cooper. Indeed, if you can convince a reviewer that you are doing them  a favor, you're practically guaranteed to get a review.

Basically, try to get reviewers to think, “Oh, if I enjoyed [comp title], I’ll enjoy this person's book too,” or “They've done the research to know that I’m a good fit for their book.” If you can do that, you’re already much closer than everyone else to obtaining high-quality book reviews !

4. Send out your book

book reviews

This is the step before the moment of truth (the review itself), so it's extremely important to get everything right. To ensure you're complying with each reviewer's guidelines, review their policy again before you send them your book. Some bloggers might prefer digital copies of manuscripts, while others might want a physical ARC — be prepared to accommodate.

Also, as you begin sending your book to various outlets, you should track your progress in a spreadsheet. Record which blogs you’ve submitted to so far, which blogs have responded, and which blogs you plan to submit to, so you don't accidentally double-submit or skip over anyone.

Formatting your book

Other than double-checking the review policy, the most important thing to do here is to format your book in a professional manner . After all, you want the presentation of your content to match the quality! Even though it shouldn't technically matter, reviewers will definitely judge your book by how it looks, inside and out.

The good news for self-formatters that you probably won't need to send physical proofs, and ebooks are much easier to format than hard copies. Digital copies also cost next-to-nothing to produce, so you can easily send multiple copies of your book out to different reviewers. You may want to check out apps like Instafreebie and Bookfunnel , which make it easy to generate individual ARC download links that you can send to the reviewers.

Pro tip : If you’re searching for a good book production tool, the Reedsy Book Editor can format and convert your manuscript into professional EPUB and print-ready files in a matter of seconds!

5. Follow up after a week

book reviews service

A week or more has passed since you queried a book blog, and so far… crickets. What do you do now? Why, follow up,  of course!

When it comes to this stage, keep calm and follow Hannah Hargrave’s advice: “Don't bother reviewers for an answer daily. I will usually chase again after a week has passed.

"If you receive a decline response, or no one responds to your third chase-up, assume this means they are not interested. Any further follow-ups, or aggressive requests as to why your work's not being reviewed, will not be viewed kindly. Above all, be polite and friendly at all times.”

That said, someone rejecting your book for review is a worst-case scenario. Best-case scenario, the blogger responds favorably and you’ve bagged yourself a review!

What comes next, you ask?

The reviewer will post their review of your book on their blog — and on Amazon, Goodreads, and any other platforms that they’ll name in their review policy. This is yet another reason why it's vital to read that policy carefully, so you know exactly where  the review will be seen.

If all goes well, the reviewer will publish a positive review that you can use to further promote your book. Maybe you'll even get a decent pull-quote for your book description ! Not to mention that if you ever write a sequel, you can almost certainly count on them for a follow-up review.

But what if you don't get any bites from book bloggers, or — horror of horrors — one of them gives you a negative review? Fortunately, the next two sections should help you deal with each of these possible dilemmas.

Bonus ways to get book reviews

Though book bloggers are the most reliable and professional source of reviews for independent authors, you may want to try other avenues to maximize your chances! Here are three more ways to get book reviews  for your work, so you can bolster your Amazon profile and start making some serious sales.

1. Tell your followers about your book

Though Amazon prohibits reviews from close friends and family , you're free to tell your random social media followers about your book and hope they leave good reviews. It obviously helps if you have a large following on Twitter or Instagram, even more so if some of those followers are fellow authors who appreciate the significance of reviews.

That said, NEVER offer "review swaps" or any kind of promotional enticement for customers to leave reviews, as this would also be against Amazon's terms. Simply let your followers know you've got a book out and that you'd love for them to read it; the rest is in their hands. However, when it comes to reviews, any amount of awareness is better than none.

2. Submit to Reedsy Discovery

Finally, for a professional review option that's a bit less time-and-effort-consuming on your part, you can submit your book right here on Reedsy Discovery! The platform allows authors to share their books with readers who are right up their alley, plus get the chance to be reviewed by one of our Discovery writers. If they leave a good review, you'll be featured in our newsletter, which goes out to thousands of subscribers every week.

Sounds pretty sweet, right? And it only takes a few minutes to submit .

Is your book ready for Discovery?

Take our quiz to find out! Takes only 1 minute.

How to deal with negative reviews

Once your work is out there in the world, you can’t control other people’s reactions to it. “Remember, by submitting your book for review, you're accepting that some people might not enjoy it,” says Hannah Hargrave. “It can be very tough after you’ve spent months or years crafting your novel, only for some reviewer to tear it apart. But you need to be prepared."

In that vein, here are some final tips on how to deal with bad reviews:

1. Have someone else read them first . This might be your agent, your friend, or your mom — anyone you trust to pre-screen your reviews. They can inform you whether each negative review is a worthwhile (if humbling) read, or just too nasty to stomach.

2. Ignore unreasonably hateful reviews . Easier said than done, yes, but really try to tune out these people! For example, if they're clearly not your target audience, but insist on pretending like they are. Or people who pick apart your sentences word-by-word, just for the "fun" of it. There's no sense in agonizing over readers who are determined to hate you, so block them on every platform and refuse to read anything else they write.

3. Address valid criticisms . You're only human, and your book won't be perfect. If someone points this out in a constructive way , acknowledge it and do what you can to fix it. This may be as simple as editing a misleading blurb, or as complex as restructuring your entire series. But if you're the author we know you are, you'll be up to the task.

Every author's book is different, but the process for getting book reviews is reassuringly universal. To recap: identify your audience, find relevant blogs, pitch them, send out your book, and don't forget to follow up! On top of that, feel free to try alternative strategies, and remember not to take the bad reviews too personally.

Yes, marketing a book may be madness, but the process of getting reviews lends method to that madness. So go forth and get your reviews — you deserve them! 🙌

Special thanks to book publicists Jessica Glenn , Hannah Hargrave , Hannah Cooper , and Beverly Bambury for their input and suggestions throughout this article. If you have any more questions about how to get book reviews, let us know in the comments!

“ Nicole: Thanks for the nice work. I’ve had all positive reviews, but some groups (Kirkus) just seemed to skim the book and didn’t really portray it properly. Your review certainly indicates a thorough read and evaluation. Much appreciated! Professional, thorough, objective and most helpful in reviewing and promoting my book. Out of 5 services used, Pacific Book was the most complete and responsive organization. I highly recommend for all authors before considering other sources.
Your book review immediately energized my publisher’s marketing efforts. Several people bought a book “on the spot” after reading the review, and it is being posted at myriad blogs and other locations. It helped seal the deal for a book signing with the top local mystery bookstore. All this was done within the first 10 days after I received the review. I can’t thank the people at Pacific Book Review enough for their most capable work.”
“ Dear Nicole, I appreciate the insightful and marketable review. Please extend my thanks to Ms. Brown-Gilbert for her services. I will be in touch once the book is released (within the next few weeks). It was a pleasure working with Pacific Book Review, you have a personal approach that makes a customer feel they are in good hands.”

At BookView, we provide top-rated editorial book reviews for authors.

In today’s competitive world of online book promotion, readers appreciate well-written editorial reviews. Small publishing houses and independent authors struggle to attract readers’ attention. Priced at $69.99, we provide an author interview and up to 200 words quality book review, any part of which can be used on the front and back cover of your book or anywhere else you want to use it; in the Editorial Reviews section of your book page on Amazon, other retail sites, on your website, blog, or as part of a promotional campaign.

We also offer 2-review packages with The Prairies Book Review .

Authors are welcome to have any kind of excerpt from the book spotlighted instead of author interview if they wish so.

Currently,  our turnover time for any review is around 6-7 weeks . We also offer expedited reviews with 3-5 days turnaround time.

BookView reviews are rated 3 ways: 4 star, 5 star or a BookView Review recommended gold badge.

4 stars: very good, 5 stars: excellent, Gold badge: simply outstanding

  • If the reviewer gives a book less than 4 stars, we will contact the author with the review to know if they want us to publish the review or not.
  • Please note: We do not post readers’ reviews on Amazon (To add our review to Amazon, please follow the directions on our sister website The Prairies Book review here ).

TESTIMONIALS

“I received one review each from BookView and Prairies. I was extremely pleased by the quality of the reviews in terms of the content and expression. The reviewers obviously engaged with the book and ably commented on the overall narrative , themes, characters, settings, and plot points in a way that would interest readers and highlight strengths of the book. I have received reviews from many other editorial sites and I would rate BookView and Prairies very favorably against them all, even when compared with much more expensive review organizations. Additionally, they were extraordinarily warm, responsive,  and professional in their customer service. I will definitely seek reviews from both for future books and enthusiastically recommend to other authors seeking professional reviews at a highly reasonable price.” Richard C. Lin , author of Arizona Awakening: A Memoir of Romance, Race, and Redemption

“Your service delivers as advertised-which is a great thing. It is also very reasonably priced, which is valuable to independent authors like myself. You are very responsive and professional. I will definitely keep you in mind for my next book project.” –  William Gray , author of  Love’s Labour’s Won: The Secret Life of William Shakespeare

“Outstanding editorial reviews. Brilliant summary of the book. Quick turnaround. Affordable options for those indie authors and publishers who are working on a tight budget. The author interview was a lovely addition. I also loved the fact that the review pointed out possible triggers for faint-hearted readers without any spoilers. I will definitely use BookView Review’s services in the future, and I highly recommend them to the indie community.” – Amy B. Nixon , author of Ghouls and Alchemy

We’ve reviewed over 1,500 books since 2009. We review most genres and are always adding more reviewers.

book reviews service

<<<<~~~  JOIN our ReviewTeam HERE.  Want to join our  Review Team ? If you read at least one book a week and you’d like FREE books on a regular basis, we’d love to add you to the team.   We NEVER charge for book reviews. We ONLY receive free digital copies of books in exchange for a fair and honest review period. We just don’t think it’s right to charge for a book reviews.

Read on if you need your book reviewed … READ THE DETAILS, PLEASE.

Review Policy: The KBR does not receive payment for our reviews, nor do we review print books. We’ll ONLY accept a digital copy in exchange for a fair and honest review of your book. If a reviewer can’t get into your work, believes the book needs work, and/or is not eligible for a 3-star rating or higher, he or she is not required to write a review. *** We do not review Erotica.

  • Scroll through our list of awesome reviewers below and contact ONE (1) reviewer that best matches the genre of your book. (You can try another until you find a reviewer who is interested).
  • Write a  formal  review request to  only one  reviewer. Include a brief synopsis, the author’s name, the title of the book, and a link to the book in the Amazon Kindle store. If we do not receive a formal request, or if you are sending out blanket requests we will not review the book. Make sure the subject of your email is: KBR Review Request.
  • Include a digital copy of your book in the format that works best according to the reviewer’s specifications.
  • If the reviewer you contact communicates that they are not interested, feel free to try another one.
  • DO sign up for our Author Newsletter  so you do not miss upcoming events, contests, and promotions.

What to expect:

  • Wait patiently; we get many requests for reviews a week.  Our reviewers are not obligated to review your work . If they don’t get into your book, you may not see a review. NO HATE MAIL PLEASE. We all know how subjective literature is. You can always contact another reviewer. Please allow between two to four weeks to hear back from the reviewer. If you do not hear back within that time frame, you are free to contact another reviewer.
  • Expect an honest review. When we opened our doors to reviewing, we changed our policy to accept any small press/indie author no matter how many reviews he or she has received. So be kind to the reviewers and be open to accepting their opinion of your work.
  • Do not contact the reviewer after he or she receives your ebook. He or she will send a written copy of their review and post it on Amazon, but with Amazon’s new review policies we cannot guarantee that the review will stay on Amazon. And remember, our reviewers are busy people too, and don’t deserve to be badgered.  To increase your chance of keeping the review up on Amazon, you may gift a copy to the reviewer upon their agreement to review your book. (The KBR only post our reviews on Amazon, but the reviewer is free to post the review under their name at any site, including their personal blog if they have one. After all, the review is their intellectual property.)
  • Feel free to add KBR reviews, or a snippet, to your “Amazon product description page” or website. This is our gift to you for allowing us to read your work.

Meet the KBR Reviewers…

Non-fiction.

Annette Ranald –  I am a practicing attorney by day, an historical and political fiction writer anytime else.  I have a blog on Facebook and Goodreads.  I’m looking to make my mark as a book reviewer of non-fiction work, since I read so much of it.  I’m interested in history, biography, memoir, current events, self-help, satire, almost anything non-fiction except for paranormal, religious or spiritual. When submitting your review request, be sure to include subject “KBR Review Request” and send to [email protected]

Thriller/ Suspense/ Horror

Kelly Young – I am a nanny and newlywed who loves reading Mystery/Thriller novels, especially psychological thrillers. My favorite books are fast paced, nail biting thrillers with a lot of plot twists that suck me in from the very beginning and have me reading late into the night until the very last page. I help run a large book group with other nannies around the country who also love this genre. I am a goodreads reviewer and also blog about my favorite new books and authors. Some popular authors I like include B.A. Paris, Ruth Ware, K.L. Slater, Taylor Adams, Mary Kubica, and Harlan Coben. I especially love debut novels from new authors in this genre. When submitting your book for review, put “KBR Book Request” in the subject line and my email is [email protected] *

Stephanie Lasley – As an avid Contemporary Romance reader, Stephanie has devoured over a hundred popular trilogies and stand alone novels. She loves curling up in her Lazy Boy chair while losing herself in the plot of a good story. Being a rapid reader will enable her to provide an author with a swift assessment of their work. When submitting your book please include “KBR Review Request” in the subject line and email Stephanie at  [email protected]

Lashanta Charles – I’m an author, a mother of three (3.5 if you count my husband), and also a Soldier. I’m from South Carolina, but currently live in Washington state. When I’m not writing, I’m reading (or eating, eating is VERY important to me). I will read just about anything, but I do have my limits. My current favorite is Paranormal Romance. Yes, I love the idea of gorgeous alien men coming to cherish women as their life mates…sue me! I love romance period, but I get all warm and fuzzy for Sports Romances, New Adult Romances, Contemporary Romances, and College Romances. I love a good crisis, but I hate a cheater, and I’m okay with cliff hangers (as long as the next book is promised to me and it isn’t a year away). I’m also okay with books in a series as long as I can start from the beginning (even if they’re all stand alone). I won’t accept poetry and Y/A will be considered case by case. My preferred formats are Kindle or PDF. Send your review requests to [email protected]

Mary Hooper –  I love to read and I read several books a week. I currently do read ARC’s for a few select authors for honest reviews. I post reviews to Amazon, Goodreads and my Facebook page. I am working on setting up a Facebook page focused on reviews, spotlights for new releases and authors profiles. When submitting your book, please include KBR Review in the subject line and my email is [email protected]

David Burnett –  I am a retired statistician/ educational researcher, having retired as director of our state’s department of education. Currently, I teach psychology, part-time at a local community college. I love to read and to write, and I’ve published two novels. I enjoy photography, travel, and playing with our two – soon to be three – grandchildren. I enjoy Romance (contemporary, historical, time-slip), Spy/Adventure. I would prefer to receive books in either as Kindle books or mobi formats. I could also accept pdf files. When you send your formal request put “KBR Review Request” in the subject line. My email is [email protected].

Science Fiction/Fantasy

Traci Marlatt –  A Recent College grad who loves books and would read all day if I could. I prefer Fantasy over Sci-fi, but I am not opposed to reading a good sci-fi either. What kind of book-nerd would I be if I were? I prefer reading on my kindle. And will “grade” on writing ability: character development, plot-line, world creation, editing errors, etc. depending on book needs. Email to: [email protected] Subject: “KBR review request” and please include a synopsis. Happy Writing!

Jim Bennett –  This poet will review any poetry as long as it’s in Kindle format. He’s married and lives in Toronto. Jim has taught “Poetry Techniques for Prose Writers” in Sheridan College. When contacting Jim, include the subject “KBR Review Submission” and mail to [email protected]. Be sure to attach your .mobi file to your email request. (A Kindle book author can get a copy of his/her book file by going to its project and starting to update it. You will be given an opportunity to download a preview of your Kindle ebook. Save this, it’s the .mobi file you need to send to me.)

Multiple Genres

Meridith West – I am a coffee drinking, horse riding mother of four who lives for the excitement and adventure of books! My favourite books are those with twists and turns, complex characters with a hint of romance. I am known for reading far into the  night for a book I cannot put down! I am a published author who loves supporting other writers. I am a Goodreads reviewer and blogger who looks forward to some great reads! Some of my favourite authors include Ilona Andrews, Amelia Hutchins, Nalini Singh and Stephanie Garber …anything fantasy is for me! When submitting your book for review put “KBR Book Request” in the subject line and my email is [email protected]

Matt McAvoy –  As well as writing books, I also love to read, and I will happily read and review ARCs and published books from authors and publishers; I will read ALL GENRES, FICTION AND NON-FICTION.  If I read your book I will post reviews on GOODREADS and on my popular book review BLOG, with links from my FACEBOOK and TWITTER accounts – I’ll also put your book’s cover on INSTAGRAM and my PINTEREST board “Books I’ve Reviewed”; Editorial Reviews can be added to Amazon in Author Central.  My reviews are very detailed and bloggy (usually several hundred words), and they do not shy away from honesty, but I’ll try not to dash dreams either!  I do comment on grammar, so please try to send me final proofs; for this reason I prefer PDF copies.

Erin Everett – I am a mother of three who loves to submerge (and scare) herself with a good book. I tend to reach for a horror or thriller book but on occasion I like to mix it up with a good romance novel. I love the smell and feel of a book but due to space constraints the Kindle app is a great substitute. When submitting your book for review, put “KBR Book Request” in the subject line and my email is [email protected]

Lindsay Hiller – I am the mother of three and author of a bestselling Young Adult/ Fantasy novel. I am addicted to reading and I go through at least three books a week. I prefer to read young adult, fantasy, regency romance and some historical fiction. I am a sucker for a good love story (no sex) so your book needs at least a hint of romance. I post all reviews to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BookDigits, Goodreads, BookLikes, and my own personal review blog. I accept .mobi files. Please put “KBR Review Request” in the subject line and send to [email protected].

Elizabeth Alsobrooks –  She was one of those girls whose parents would walk by her bedroom door and say, “turn off that flashlight and go to sleep,” because they knew she was hiding under the covers with a book. Though that was more than a couple years ago, she still loves reading. An Urban Fantasy author, she enjoys reading urban fantasy, paranormal, historical paranormal romance, horror, thriller and YA. Gerald Sallier – An unabashed elitist, Gerald seeks to find those diamonds in the rough of self-published fiction. Those who transcend market politics and have something worth actually saying. He enjoys works with a philosophical twist (provided you’ve done your homework, no armchairs allowed) and loves a riveting satire – again, provided you actually have something worth saying. Silly musings need not apply. No romance or any other genre which is derivative of romance. No simple adult fiction, vis a vis YA. He enjoys science fiction, satire, humor, fantasy, and literary. When submitting your formal review request, be sure to include subject “KBR Review Request”. His email is [email protected].

Sandi Hansen –  I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love to read. I was the girl at school, or on the bus, who always had her nose in a book. I will honestly review any book focusing mainly on storyline, character dynamics, and writing style. I will gladly post my reviews on my Goodreads, Amazon, and Instagram book review accounts. Because I also write, I understand how important it is to receive an unbiased view of your work for confirmation that it’s either off the charts awesome or maybe needs some tweaking. I prefer contemporary romance, but I love historical as well. I’ve read many paranormal, shape-shifter, and light erotica books, but I’m not really interested in reading hardcore erotica. If you would like a review from me, please include KBR Review Request in the subject line and include a short synopsis of your book as well as your expectations from the review process in the body of your request. I prefer the Kindle friendly mobi format since I always have my Kindle with me. Please email your request and attached file to [email protected]

Having written many textbooks for South Pacific schools I recently turned to writing “real’ books. I will read and review anything military or any humorous book. I have a kindle. When submitting your formal review request, please include “KBR Review Request” in the subject, and send to,  [email protected]

Richard Henricks  – I’ve been a freelance writer since the mid-1990s, and I author various things under a number of pen names; e.g., “Jonathan Kamp.” I’ve been a bookworm since I taught myself to read when I was three (kidding). My three favorite novelists are John Grisham, John Sandford, and Robert Crais (not necessarily in that order). I read historical nonfiction in between novels, and particularly love reading about World War II (I hated history in high school, now I love it – go figure). I will definitely review anything “military,” as well as anything written about “fitness/health,” “higher education,” or “employment.” I am open to reviewing any book, but my time is limited because I write every day, marketing my writing when I have time. After spending a lifetime working in or with the military, I finally had made enough to sit back and do as much (or as little) as I wanted to and since I had always been an avid reader, the jump to making it one of my major pastimes was easy. I’ve read many different genres over the years but stumbled into Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy after many years of reading mostly books in the Fantasy genre. I wanted a good story about people of action and passion that did not always end up in some tragedy. When I’m not reading, I’m busy as a department manager in a supermarket, catching up with friends and family, or relaxing (with a good book!) I will read any genre and prefer Kindle or pdf please. I have a blog at www.myloveofreading.blogspot.com When submitting, title email: KBR Review Request, and send to [email protected]

Top 5 Paid Indie Book Review Services Compared

top5newchart

It’s difficult to know exactly what you’re getting when you shop for a professional review, so Self-Publishing Review decided to commission a study to look at eleven factors that have been brought to our attention by SPR clients most often, and compared our services to the competition.

Here at SPR, we consider that we are one of five review service big-hitters, and therefore we compared ourselves to each of those: BlueInk Review, Foreword Clarion, Kirkus Reviews, and Indie Reader. We chose these because they use professional writers, have good quality websites and a sizeable brand presence in the indie book arena.

We were firstly glad to see that we are the most economical review service out there, and also the speediest. We also offer the most words in a single review, and we were one of three services to offer provable testimonials straight from clients on our website.

There are however some other favorable assets to some of our competitors, which may balance out the reasons behind the bigger price tags.

ForeWord Clarion

Foreword Clarion are one of the set-in-stone services on the block, and do offer a solid review service with a star rating and links on a clean and bustling website; but Clarion don’t offer any extras. At Clarion, it seems your review may be shared on their Facebook but they currently have only 68 likes. Foreword’s main Facebook does not share reviews as a rule, it seems. They come up second-speediest for their regular review turnaround time at six weeks.

USP – Clarion promises to share your review with “our partners, such as Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Cengage, Bowker, and EBSCO [who] will spread the word to thousands of librarians and booksellers.” Their reviews are written as formal copy giving you the opportunity to use sections accordingly, and have the sections stand alone, such as their “Money Quote”.

Downside – Cost

Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus Indie Reviews do offer some flimsy promises of sharing your review on their newsletter, with 50,000 readers, but it seems the word “may” instead of “will” implies it’s at their discretion, as is the glimmer of a chance to be featured in Kirkus Reviews Magazine, and apart from being shared on the usual platforms (Google is mentioned, but that’s anything on the web) there doesn’t seem much else, so you are paying for the privilege of adding the review to your Amazon or Goodreads author section and showing off the stars Kirkus have given you along with a quote. Depending on what sort of writer you are this may or may not work for you sales wise. Kirkus is renowned for having professional reviewers, and the tryouts are tough for the job, so you will certainly get a well-crafted review for marketing purposes. Having said that, at 250 words priced at up to $575, it seems rather short of a good deal. You are definitely paying for the name at Kirkus.

USP – Biggest name in indie books means you get to quote Kirkus on your author page and get a chance to be in an industry print magazine. Copy is likely to be decent and very useable, and written in a formal copy format so you can use various parts of your review for different purposes.

Downside – Cost, time and the site features all kinds of books mixed in, meaning your self-pubbed has a lot of work to do to get seen if not picked up. See ALLi’s article on Kirkus reviews here.

BlueInk Review

BlueInk Review, our seasonal partners, offer more of a literary package. Their extras include sharing on library lists and in publishing circles, and considering that co-owner Patricia Moosbrugger is also a seasoned literary agent, the review becomes a small part of a promising kickstart for any author. You can also be sure of a fully edited and proofread review from a professional at BlueInk, and their service remains personal and prompt. BlueInk also share select reviews on their flourishing Facebook page as well as Pinterest and Twitter. Only exceptional books will receive a star rating.

USP – Literary connections and library listings are a plus, reviews are well-written and customer service is impeccable, often do deals with partners, such as SPR, that give discounts and offers.

Downside – No sales links to book

IndieReader

IndieReader has just put prices up by as much as $100, so it seems that their claims of being “the most cost-effective” review service need some further examination. Personally I think their star system comes off kind of snarky instead of encouraging: one star apparently meaning, “Really bad; there’s a reason this book is self-pubbed.” which seems mean-spirited for a community-based industry. However, their site is clean, smart and modern and their mailing list is really informative. Again, you don’t get any “extras” so you are just paying for a review that takes up to 9 weeks depending on what service you choose.

However, IndieReader is an incredibly good read and a go-to for industry news, so it’s definitely worth looking at some exposure with IR as part of a marketing plan.

USP – Bustling website means your review will get seen. The second-lowest priced service.

Downside – Star-rating and review style may be a little terse for some, turnaround is slow.

We’ve got three review packages, starting at $69 if you need a quick fix of exposure within 2 weeks. Both our SPR review packages deliver in 4 weeks and have 500 words, and there are a ton of extras and discounts for members.

If we combine our readership of around 37,000 on social media allowing for repeats, plus our 7,000 subscribers, it seems we are doing pretty well on getting reviews seen, and we share the actual URL of the review on social media, our homepage and newsletters as part of the service.

We definitely score on cost, speed, plenty of copy, plenty of extras for marketing and exposure, and we provide lots of testimonials for potential clients to see what we do.

Have a look at our review packages here.

Looking at this study we’ve learned about developing our brand, and that is next on the agenda.

Until then, remember, a paid review is not just useful on the site you bought it on, but it offers a great advantage for having press release copy, back of book copy, star ratings and editorial reviews on all your sales outlets. Paid reviews are an essential part of a professional book marketing plan, and we’re all here to help you discover your target audience and to use the right language to sell your book as an indie author.

LoveReading Reviews

Why Choose LoveReading?

  • LoveReading is the original and UK’s biggest and best known book recommendation brand comprising of LoveReading.co.uk , LoveReading4Kids.co.uk and LoveReading4Schools.co.uk
  • Since 2005 we have been the trusted advisor of readers looking for credible recommendations and book reviews.
  • Our reliable teams of Expert Reviewers, Ambassadors and Consumer Review Panel provide honest and accessible reviews to help promote books.

Publishers love us, we review books for every main UK publisher including Harper Collins, HQ, Penguin, Puffin, Bloomsbury, Macmillan, Walker Books, Bonnier, Zaffre, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Orion, Oxford University Press and many more.

  • Most titles (and definitely every promoted and selected title) on our websites has been read, reviewed and loved by our expert panel. That’s what we do. This review is then used to spread the word. If you get us the proof early enough, these quotes can be used on the book jacket, like hundreds of others have done in the past.
  • Due to popular demand we are now offering a service enabling indie authors to get much-needed feedback on their books. Our panel of Ambassadors are ready and waiting to review your book.
  • Books that are well reviewed by our Ambassadors will gain the opportunity to be featured on the main LoveReading and / or LoveReading4Kids site.
  • We do not guarantee positive reviews, unfavourable reviews can be taken as valuable feedback for improvements and ultimately will not be published on our site. This is why our readers trust us and why our endorsement is so meaningful.
  • Our first stage review package is just £120 making it accessible for authors to receive valuable feedback on their book.

book reviews service

How It Works

Submit a book.

Click the "Get Started" link above or click here to choose the review package you would like to go for . At this stage you will be requested to enter payment details. When you complete your submission, you'll get an email from the LoveReading team confirming receipt of your request.

Upload Your Book

You'll have 2 options to choose from when submitting your indie book. We request that you upload your book as a PDF, epub or mobi file. Should you wish to send us a physical copy, please use a PDF of the book cover in your submission, let us know you would like to send a physical copy by emailing [email protected] and we will arrange for an ambassador to review the book and let you know where to send it. Please be aware that posting of physical copies of your book will cause a delay and may have an impact on when we are able to get your feedback returned to you.

The Selection Process

After receiving your book, our Editors will allocate your book to one of the team of Ambassadors who will review the book and provide a detailed review which will then be emailed to you within our turnaround time. Turnaround times start from within 4 weeks of submission. You can see the detailed breakdown of each review option and their respective turnaround times in the 'Review Options' section below.

Positive reviews will be listed at no extra charge on LoveReading.co.uk or LoveReading4Kids.co.uk. If our ambassadors really loved your book, it could also be awarded an "Indie Books We Love" badge, at the reviewer's discretion, and will be listed in our Indie Books We Love section and on the homepage for one month.

Selling Your Books

If your book is listed on LoveReading or LoveReading4Kids we may also be able to sell your book through our website.

Since we have launched as a bookstore with social purpose, we are able to sell a huge amount of books on our sites. However as we are donating 25% of the cover price to schools, we are unable to sell every book published. We are working with Gardners Wholesaler as our exclusive supplier for our online bookstore. Unless the book is available from them and with a significant enough discount available they will unfortunately show as not available to purchase through our site. In our FAQs section of the site, we display a graph of our new business model to demonstrate.

It won't preclude us from shouting about books of course! After all, for the past 18 years, we have been used as an information source, rather than bookseller and we are under no illusion that people will entirely leave their loyal retail preference and come to us. We are merely offering a socially responsible alternative, and offering a revenue stream to schools - who are struggling with funding cuts - to enable them to invest in more books for their children.

Only for indie author books, are we happy to include links to other booksellers on the book pages, so when we send you your feedback we will ask you to send us links to your preferred bookseller so that we can feature them with your review.

If your book is available from Gardners, but not at a significant enough discount, we invite you to contact your account manager there and discuss. We need 45% for the book to show as available on our site and still deliver on our business model mentioned above.

Indie Books We Love

As above, the books that are awarded the Indie Books We Love Badge will also qualify for discounted further promotional packages. ONLY OPEN TO INDIE BOOKS WE LOVE.

Q. Who are your review Ambassadors?

A. Our Ambassadors are hand-picked from thousands and include book bloggers, librarians, authors, professional reviewers, media execs and more

Q. Who are your consumer reviewers and will they review my book also?

A. We have over 3,000 consumer reviewers who are a mixture of avid book readers and reviewers. We send out a monthly email which will include your book (digital copies only), offering it for review. The number of reviews from this varies, depending on the appetite for your book. We do not guarantee reviews from our consumers but it will be seen by a lot of reviewers who will have the chance to review it.

Q. Will my review feature on Amazon and GoodReads?

A. To post the review on Amazon, please contact an Amazon representative directly. Whilst not guaranteed, most of our reviewers will be active on main book sites and with your permission can share these on a case by case basis.

Q. If my review is negative, will it be made public or shown anywhere?

A. No. LoveReading is a site that centres around positivity and we believe that everyone's reading tastes are subjective. A book that may not be for us doesn't mean that it's not the perfect book for someone else. We will share the feedback privately with you as unfavourable reviews can offer valuable feedback for improvements, but we will not share any negative thoughts on any books and no one would see it without your permission.

Q. What happens if my Ambassador review is positive?

A. Should your Ambassador review be positive, we will list your book on LoveReading.co.uk and/or LoveReading4Kids.co.uk at no extra charge. If our ambassadors really loved your book, it could also be awarded an “Indie Books We Love” badge, at the reviewer's discretion, and will be listed in our Indie Books We Love section and on the homepage for one month. We will also give you our coveted “Recommended By LoveReading” graphic to use as you see fit.

Q. Is this service ethical?

A. YES. Our intention is to give honest feedback from a trusted LoveReading Ambassador, and to also provide wide book exposure to mainstream readers and to reward books people love with added exposure. We have worked hard to provide the best value offering on the market.

Q. Yes but I heard it is wrong to pay for reviews.

A. You are paying for a service. You are paying for an honest review. You are also paying for the opportunity to gain exposure to thousands of other reviewers who may want to read your book. And, you are paying for the chance to feature on one of the leading book recommendation sites and online bookstore should your book be positively received. We are presenting this opportunity as an author care and promotion package and have priced it to be accessible to all.

Q. Do I need an ISBN number?

A. You are not required to have an ISBN number in order to complete the submission. However if the book receives positive feedback and is added to the website we will need an ISBN or ASIN as well as a publication date in order to create the book page.

Q. How do you compare on price?

A. Favourably. Although there is no like-for-like service to what we offer in the UK, there are dozens of sites who charge 2-5 times our price just for a review. Our package delivers a review, the potential to get more reviews from avid readers and the possibility of added exposure on our trusted network of high traffic sites.

Q. Why should I move forward with this opportunity with LoveReading?

A. We have reviewed top titles for over 15 years from every leading publisher as a book recommendation site. We’re one of the leading book recommendation sites and online bookstore and have a vast following and newsletter audience of over 500,000 as well as very busy sites with hundreds of thousands of visitors a month. We do not guarantee positive reviews, unfavourable reviews can be taken as valuable feedback for improvements and ultimately will not be published on our site. This is why our readers trust us and why our endorsement is so meaningful.

Q. How will you choose my review Ambassador?

A. To ensure our ambassadors are reading the genres they enjoy and create the best environment for favourable feedback we send regular emails to our ambassadors with the latest submissions and they select the books they want to read.

Q. How can I send my book to you for review?

A. We prefer sending digital copies online but can also accept hard copies in most cases if you send us an email to [email protected]

Q. Will my review be positive?

A. We guarantee at least one review but do not guarantee that the review will be positive. If we did, it would not help you or our readers in the long run. Unfavourable reviews can be taken as valuable feedback for improvements but ultimately will not be published on our site. This is why our readers trust us and why our endorsement is so meaningful.

Q. What genres do you accept for review?

A. We accept any type of book, from self-help to religious books to fiction. Our panel of ambassadors have a diverse range of reading preferences. We would however advise that this system is not suitable for specialised or academic texts.

Q. Do you review kids books?

A. Yes. LoveReading4Kids.co.uk is one of the leading children's book review sites and is now also an online bookstore. We have thousands of children's book reviewers on our consumer panel and well-respected children's book ambassadors on our elite panel.

Q. How long will it take to receive my review?

A. Your Ambassador review is guaranteed within 4 weeks for our expedited package and 8 weeks for our standard package. Reviewers from our consumer panel are sent within a monthly newsletter so vary but we normally ask our consumer reviewers to review books within 4 weeks of receiving them.

Q. Do you only review self-published books?

A. No. With these particular packages we review self-published books and books from small to medium publishers.

Q. Do you review Audiobooks?

A. We can, but please email [email protected] at the time of your submission so that we can work through the process with you and ensure that we deliver your feedback within the correct time frame.

Q. How do I pay for this service?

A. We prefer Paypal right now as it protects you and us. If you must pay by cheque or money order, however, you may email us at [email protected]

Q. I have other questions, who can I speak to?

A. Please email [email protected] and we will be happy to answer any questions you have.

'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. The best book subscription services to give the gift of reading

allison-murray

There is nothing like curling up with a good book. Nowadays, reading comes in different forms: Ebooks, audiobooks, and of course, an actual printed book in your hands. Whatever way you like to read, there is a book subscription for you.

ZDNET Recommends

Don't know which kindle reader is right for you we break it down.

Kindle readers are a great way to take your bookshelf with you while you travel for vacation or on your morning commute. There are several models, however, so it becomes complicated choosing one. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is our top choice due to its glare-free screen, waterproof chassis, Bluetooth support, and battery life. But let's compare it to other Kindle readers available.

Book subscriptions offer paid memberships that deliver a new book to your hands each month.

They are great for those looking to add to their home library and readers looking to expand beyond their common interests and genres.

I've rounded up the best book subscription services available so you can start checking books off of your reading list.

Also:   We found the best book lights to gift the reader in your life

Book of the Month

Best book subscription overall.

  • Great way to build up your home library with vetted titles
  • Inexpensive price range
  • Discover new and noteworthy titles
  • BOTM Logo appears on the cover of every book
  • Some subscribers say the page quality is slightly different than store-bought books

Book of the Month features: Skip and add-on options | Hardcover books | 5 books to choose from

You may have heard of the Book of the Month, and that's because it has been around since 1926. The subscription service lets you choose one of five fiction/nonfiction books per month, so that you can add to your growing home library. The service has an emphasis on early releases and debut authors. Some notable books featured in the Book of the Month include It Ends with Us by Coleen Hoover, Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C. Ford, and The People We Keep by Allison Larkin.

The first month's book is just $9.99, and after that, you'll pay $15.99 per month to get a new hardcover to read. Of course, you can always skip a month if you're not intrigued by any of the titles, and, if you want more than one of the five titles, you have the option to add up to two books to your monthly selection for an extra cost.

Best customized book subscription

  • Offers ebook and audiobook subscription versions as well
  • Books are completely customized to your taste
  • Hardcover only costs extra
  • Does not accept cancellations

Page 1 features: 3, 6, or 12-month subscription options | Large-print options | Mix of hardcover and paperback

If you'd rather get more personalized book recommendations, Page 1 offers a customized subscription option strictly based on your tastes. When signing up, you'll tell the service what books and authors you love and what ones you don't, and they will curate books for you each month -- you can even link to your Goodreads account.

You'll receive a mix of hardcover and paperback titles, and if you receive a book you've already read, Page 1 will ship you a new title, free of charge.

It's important to note that Page 1 does not accept cancellations of whichever subscription you purchased. But it does not auto-renew subscriptions and does offer free book replacements.

Amazon Kindle Unlimited

Best book subscription for e-readers.

  • Audible Narration included
  • Great for genre readers and those open to indie/self-published books
  • Read multiple books at a time
  • Big-name publishing houses aren't available, so many best-sellers are left out
  • Choosing from among so many titles/options can be overwhelming and time-consuming

Amazon Kindle Unlimited f eatures: Free 30-day trial | 2 million digital titles | Up to three magazine subscriptions included in membership

Of course, if you're an ebook reader, there's always Amazon Kindle Unlimited, which offers around 2 million digital titles. The service works much like a library: For $9.99 a month, you can borrow up to 10 books at a time, including up to three magazines. In addition, Kindle Unlimited's catalog is updated regularly, so there are always new titles to discover.

You don't need an Amazon Kindle device to enjoy the service. You can download the Kindle app to any device and read your ebooks on your smartphone or tablet. You can swap between different devices, and the app will save your reading place across every device.

Best book subscription for YA readers

  • Each box is built around a theme
  • Price includes book and collectible items
  • Shipping is not included in the price
  • Books mostly lean towards the fantasy and magical realism genres

OwlCrate f eatures:  Two box options | Skip option | Hardcover books

Young Adult readers will appreciate the OwlCrate subscription, which specifically caters to the YA genre. The service offers two different subscriptions: OwlCrate Jr. ($29.99 per month) for kids aged 8-12 and OwlCrate ($32.99 per month) for fourteen and older. Each box comes with extras like a letter from the author, a monthly magazine, an activity, or unique book-related goodies, and more.

OwlCrate also frequently offers limited edition boxes packed with special edition titles and even more goodies.

Best book subscription for audiobooks

  • Podcasts included in the subscription
  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa devices
  • Must be a Prime member for the best benefits
  • Different plan options and credit-based system can be confusing

Audible Features: Audible Originals | Five membership plans | More than 200,000 titles

Those who prefer to listen to books on the go should look no further than Audible's audiobook selection. It offers more than 200,000 titles, and plans start at $7.95 per month and go up to $22.95 per month. With each plan, you get a different amount of credits, which can be used to purchase any audiobook, regardless of price.

During your free 30-day trial, you receive two credits, worth one title each, toward the premium library. Once the trial ends, you revert to the standard one credit per month.

The service also features Audible originals, which are exclusive audio titles created by celebrated authors, journalists, playwrights, and other storytellers, and produced by Audible Studios. In addition, Audible offers a sleep collection that includes bedtime stories, soundscapes, and ASMR.

What is the best book subscription service?

We chose the Book of the Month club as the best book subscription based on price, book selection, and reviews.

Which book subscription is right for you?

While all of these book subscriptions are great options, it ultimately comes down to what types of books you like to read, if you prefer an actual printed book, an audiobook, or an ebook, and what amount you're willing to spend.

How did I choose these book subscription services?

I chose these book subscriptions after extensive research into the product category. I compared factors like pricing, reviews (both good and bad), different reading methods, and the number of book titles offered. All of the book subscription services were compared at their lowest price point offered.

Are book subscription services cheaper than buying a single book?

It really depends -- if you want to buy a new book online or at a bookstore, that can cost you anywhere between $14 and $20, so if you're a brand new hardcover book lover, it might be cheaper to opt for a book subscription service.

Used books will cost less, but you might not find those new and best-selling titles in a used bookstore.

Are there alternative book subscriptions to consider?

There are other book subscription services for all kinds of readers. Here are a few other options worth looking into:

6 New Books We Recommend This Week

Suggested reading from critics and editors at The New York Times.

  • Share full article

Our recommended books this week include two satirical novels — one about identity politics and victimization, the other about artificial intelligence and gender roles — along with Tana French’s second crime novel about a Chicago police officer who retired to the Irish countryside. In nonfiction, we recommend the story of a deadly avalanche, a philosopher’s exploration of the concept of giving up, and the gratifyingly intimate audio version of Barbra Streisand’s recent memoir, which she narrates herself. Happy listening, and happy reading. — Gregory Cowles

MY NAME IS BARBRA Barbra Streisand

Certain of the, shall we say, eccentricities (oh … the ellipses!) in Streisand’s 992-page doorstop of a memoir get wonderfully ironed out in audio form. Its sprawling a-star-is-born anecdotes seem to find their natural form in the towering performer’s 48-plus hours of discursive, disarming and often gloriously off-the-cuff narration.

book reviews service

“As Streisand recites the story of her life … she ad-libs off the written text, splices sentences, audibly shakes her head at dubious decisions, and altogether places us opposite her on the sofa with a cup of coffee for a two-day kibitz.”

From Zachary Woolfe’s review

Penguin Audio | 48 hours, 17 minutes

VICTIM Andrew Boryga

Boryga’s debut is a lively social satire about the fetishization of victimhood, following a young working-class student, Javi, who uses exaggerated stories of tragedy to earn attention and success. Boryga is having fun, and he’s inviting us to join in.

book reviews service

“Let’s be clear: Though Boryga is playing, he’s not playing around. Through Javi’s story, Boryga humorously and scathingly calls out the gluttonous consumption of stories of victimhood.”

From Mateo Askaripour’s review

Doubleday | $27

ANNIE BOT Sierra Greer

On the surface, “Annie Bot” is a story about an A.I. sex robot that grows more and more sentient, but underneath this high-tech premise is a sharp and smart exploration of misogyny, toxic masculinity, selfhood and self-determination.

book reviews service

“A brilliant pas de deux, grappling with ideas of freedom and identity while depicting a perverse relationship in painful detail.”

From Lydia Kiesling’s review

ON GIVING UP Adam Phillips

In his latest book, Phillips’s exploration of “giving up” covers the vast territory between hope and despair. We can give up smoking, sugar or a bad habit; but we can also give up on ourselves. Phillips proposes curiosity and improvisation as antidotes to absolute certainty.

“Phillips doesn’t try to prevent us from thinking whatever it is that we want to think; what he does is repeatedly coax us to ask if that’s what we really believe, and how we can be sure.”

THE DARKEST WHITE: A Mountain Legend and the Avalanche That Took Him Eric Blehm

In January 2003, seven skiers and snowboarders were killed in an avalanche on a glacier in western Canada. Among them was the American snowboarder Craig Kelly, and the adventure writer Blehm turns this page-turner not just into a biography of the athlete, but a tribute to the sport itself: addictive, thrilling — sometimes deadly.

“Probably the most unremittingly exciting book of nonfiction I have come across in years. I found myself reading late into recent nights wholly transfixed by every paragraph, every word.”

THE HUNTER Tana French

For Tana French fans, every one of the thriller writer’s twisty, ingenious books is an event. This one, a sequel to “The Searcher,” once again sees the retired Chicago cop Cal Hooper, a perennial outsider in the Irish west-country hamlet of Ardnakelty, caught up in the crimes — seen and unseen — that eat at the seemingly picturesque village.

“The novel’s greatest pleasures — genuine twists aside — reside in the specific intersection of outsider and native, and particularly the former’s determined need to idealize, to claim, to tint whole rivers green.”

What Should You Read Next? Here Are the Best Reviewed Books of the Week

Featuring new titles by leigh bardugo, alexandra fuller, anne lamott, and more.

Book Marks logo

Leigh Bardugo’s The Familiar , Alexandra Fuller’s Fi , and Anne Lamott’s Somehow all feature among the Best Reviewed Books of the Week.

Brought to you by Book Marks , Lit Hub’s home for book reviews.

Leigh Bardugo_The Familiar

1. The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (Flatiron)

“Bardugo brilliantly explores the wavy line between the supernatural and the divine … When Bardugo chooses to venture further into the darkness, it’s that much more devastating because of how much fun the reader has been having. In fact, she is a master of anticlimax: She builds apprehension for huge events that do not come to pass, then blindsides the reader with something totally unexpected instead … A thrilling addition to her canon about oppression and liberation, and anyone interested in this historical period and the themes she’s exploring will find it engrossing.”

–Charlie Jane Anders ( The Washington Post )

2. The Sleepwalkers by Scarlett Thomas (Simon & Schuster)

6 Rave • 1 Positive

“For Thomas, nothing seems to be off the table. She shifts between erotic thrills, gothic drama, postmodern deconstruction and kitchen-sink realism. Through her bold storytelling, The Sleepwalkers becomes a work of peculiar, gonzo genius … Thomas takes a glamorous late-capitalist setting, with rosé and catamarans, and shreds, twists and warps it into a story that is surprising, humane and political to its bones.”

–Flynn Berry ( The New York Times Book Review )

3. The Limits by Nell Freudenberger (Knopf)

2 Rave • 5 Positive Read an excerpt from The Limits here

“Freudenberger is fluent in every realm, social conundrum, and crime against the earth she brings into focus, keenly attuned to science and emotion, tradition and high-tech, race and gender, greed and conscience, irony and tragedy. Each character’s challenges are significant on scales intimate and global and their wrestling with secrets, anger, and fear grows increasingly suspenseful in this lambent, deeply sympathetic, and thought-provoking novel.”

–Donna Seaman ( Booklist )

1. Fi: A Memoir of My Son by Alexandra Fuller (Grove Press)

“Fuller leaves nothing under the table, under the rug or under wraps … The last thing you expect to do when you read a book about a child dying is to laugh … The wit in this memoir is soul-piercing … Fuller is sagacious and perspicacious. She is a sublime writer. In the hands of another memoirist, the story of Fi might be unbearably sad, but this book is a mesmeric celebration of a boy who died too soon, a mother’s love and her resilience. It will help others surviving loss—surviving life.”

–David Sheff ( The New York Times Book Review )

=2. The Wives: A Memoir by Simone Gorrindo (Gallery/Scout Press)

3 Rave • 2 Positive

“Gorrindo’s memoir is a gorgeously rendered peek behind the curtain of military life, as she recounts reckoning with her husband’s participation in violence—and examining why his job exists at all.”

–Courtney Eathorne ( Booklist )

=2. Somehow: Thoughts on Love by Anne Lamott (Riverhead)

3 Rave • 2 Positive Read an essay by Anne Lamott here

“In her trademark godly yet snarky way, she extracts every life lesson from her latest new experience with the deft zeal of a chef reducing flour and fat to roux … At times, Somehow made me huffy about—by which I mean envious of—Lamott’s gift for writing powerfully, deeply, often radically, while appealing to, well, everyone … No matter one’s external descriptors, Lamott speaks to the human in all of us, challenging us to bear her beam of love, and our own.”

The best recent poetry – review roundup

A Year of Last Things by Michael Ondaatje; The Silence by Gillian Clarke; Joy in Service on Rue Tagore by Paul Muldoon; May Day by Jackie Kay; I Cannot Be Good Until You Say It by Sanah Ahsan; Grief’s Alphabet by Carrie Etter

A Year of Last Things by Michael Ondaatje

A Year of Last Things by Michael Ondaatje ( Cape, £14.99 ) After a break of nearly 20 years, Ondaatje has returned to poetry, ruminating on sliding doors moments in life, “as those torn lines remind us / how to recall”. Through his characteristic mix of lyric and prose poems, he articulates feelings we struggle to acknowledge, especially the fact that nothing lasts: one poem is called The Great Impermanence. “So many things to learn, keep on learning / during these last days, watching us / with an awareness that we perhaps / have not learned but shall.” This is a generous, moving book.

The Silence by Gillian Clarke

The Silence by Gillian Clarke ( Carcanet, £12.99 ) The latest collection from the former national poet of Wales opens in 2020’s first lockdown, finding uplift outside the window: “the blackbird’s Latin all day long / [ …] / his song on the spire of the beech: / veni vidi vici, veni vidi vici, / this is mine mine mine.” Clarke’s skill lies in using simple language to record moments of great beauty, no less lovely for sometimes being familiar. She reminds us of the comfort to be drawn from paying attention to nature: “After long isolation, in times like these, / in the world’s darkness, let us love like trees.”

Joy in Service on Rue Tagore by Paul Muldoon

Joy in Service on Rue Tagore by Paul Muldoon ( Faber, £14.99 ) Following 2021’s Howdie-Skelp, Muldoon is in a playful mode. The book is buttressed by long sonnet sequences, at once enigmatic, wise and vitriolically angry, notably in Near Izium, which focuses on the Ukraine war: his most powerful political poem since Meeting the British. Elsewhere he creates sense and nonsense through his unmatched ear for unexpected rhyme, avoiding whimsy by pinpointing instances of tender clarity amid the levity: “We mourn all those poor souls who’ve drowned / because our own inconstant beacons // have led to their running aground.”

May Day by Jackie Kay

May Day by Jackie Kay ( Picador, £10.99 ) Kay’s eighth collection weighs the loss of her parents against a celebration of collective power and the joy of protest marches, themes most successfully intertwined in the title poem: “What can I say but flame the alarm / before our world goes up in shame.” While her language at times could work harder to dodge cliche (a “gunmetal grey” river “stretching away under a lead sky”), Kay’s impeccable musicality is a delight, as is her Glasgow: a backdrop to hymns of secular solidarity, “a place of welcome / to the citizens of the world”.

I Cannot Be Good Until You Say It by Sanah Ahsan

I Cannot Be Good Until You Say It by Sanah Ahsan ( Bloomsbury, £9.99 ) The clinical psychologist’s debut collection is a restless interrogation of various facets of their life and work: their relationship with Islam; queerness; danger in the therapy room. “White makes a muslim of threat. / Dogma makes a threat of queer. / A lie has a way of remaking itself.” Studded with Quranic quotations, Ahsan’s lines often break in ways that make the poems feel unsettled, but that still deliver moments of grace: “desire is a dragonfruit / we are almost tasting / you and the You that we don’t know.”

Grief’s Alphabet by Carrie Etter

Grief’s Alphabet by Carrie Etter ( Seren, £10.99 ) An impassioned reckoning with the aftermath of Etter’s adoptive parents’ deaths. Etter has the ability to floor you as she explores guilt (“The errant daughter an ocean away”), and makes everyday observations that are anything but banal: “I collect and collect: the novel from her bedside, / bookmark never to advance.” She is particularly good at showing how finding a language for grief is close to impossible; one poem runs in its entirety, “F Is for Fuck This.”
