In this cell phone essay you have to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the way in which cell phones and the internet dominate the ways in which people relate to each other socially.

These days, cell (mobile) phones and the internet are very important to the ways in which people relate to one another socially.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

This is a type of question that has appeared in the IELTS test a few times:

• The impacts of technology on the way we communicate with each other

With IELTS essay questions, you always need to note carefully exactly what you are being asked to write about. 

In this case it is about cell / mobile phones and the internet . So you must write about both . Sometimes an essay may just ask you about one or the other. 

This is also important in this cell phone essay:

• 'The way in which people communicate with each other socially'

You are  not  being asked about work situations but social situations. So you should  not  talk about how these types of technology have impacted on organisations or workers. 

You are also being asked if there are  more advantages or disadvantages . So you must clearly state your opinion on this and also write about both in your cell phone essay (as the suggestion is that there are both).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Cell Phone Essay Model Answer

It is rare these days to find someone who does not communicate and interact with others through a cell phone or the internet as they are widespread throughout society. I believe that the benefits of this development outweigh the drawbacks. 

One main negative consequence of this development is that people may have become disconnected in relation to conversing with each other face-to-face. People now tend to use their cell phones or the internet to communicate, but rather than actually speaking, they send a message. Some of the most popular applications are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Line, all of which encourage messaging. The result of this is that people may lack the benefits of engaging with others in conversation and the closeness this brings. 

Despite this, there are several important advantages as well. Firstly, the internet and cell phones mean that people can stay connected however far away they are from each other. For instance, these days, many people live in different countries or go travelling in different countries. Cell phones and the internet mean that parents can easily keep in touch with their children who are on holiday and people who immigrate to live abroad can easily communicate with their loved ones when needed. In addition to this, the internet means that people also interact with strangers and increase their knowledge of other cultures because through such things as Facebook, people connect to all sorts of people around the world, becoming friends and also discussing and exchanging knowledge. 

In conclusion, although a disadvantage of the internet and cell phones is the lack of face-to-face conversation, they have improved the way we can stay in contact with loved ones and exchange ideas with new people. Overall then, this is a positive development for society.

It is undeniable that today’s world revolves around technology due to its growth over the past decades. Mobile phones as a part of technology have become increasingly common in modern society. Today, it is impossible to imagine an adolescent or an adult without a cell phone. Students have started to use mobile phones in classrooms, which has raised many concerns among teachers, schools’ authorities, and parents. While there are several disadvantages of the utilization of technology during classes, the advantages of it prevail.

The benefits of technology for students are evident. First, mobile phones can substitute textbooks and notebooks, which may have a positive impact on individuals’ health as they do not have to carry heavy bags to schools. Students can download learning materials in electronic form and use them during classes. Moreover, they can find the information faster and save time to perform other important tasks. Second, with the help of mobile phones, students can have access to their textbooks, lectures, and notes anywhere and at any time. They can read on the bus on their way to school, which may increase the time they dedicate to the analysis of the learning materials and help them to reflect on the topics of discussions.

Furthermore, students can use mobile phones as dictionaries in language classes. It may save their time and ensure that the long learning process does not discourage them. Also, they can download applications that are designed to assist in acquiring new language skills.

It is necessary to mention that students can use mobile phones as organizational or planning tools. They can plan their time based on the deadlines, arrange their activities and track their grades and performance in class. While many students use notebooks for such purposes, the utilization of mobile phones allows for having all the information in one place and ensuring that no important data is lost. Moreover, teachers can be involved in the organizational process too by sharing the necessary information about due dates and requirements via applications. It may improve teacher-student relationships and increase individuals’ performance in class.

There are several drawbacks associated with the use of mobile phones in the classroom. The primary one is that they can distract students from learning, as they may prefer to play games or use social networks. Moreover, individuals can become aggressive if the teachers or school authorities try to forbid the use of technology in class. To eliminate the possible negative outcomes, it is necessary for students to learn how to avoid distraction while working with mobile phones.

For example, they can delete unnecessary applications or restrict their use during classes. Apart from that, students can improve their performance by studying the factors that can cause distraction and avoiding them. Teachers and schools’ authorities should also consider investigating the benefits of the technology to prevent the establishment of unnecessary policies related to its use in the classroom.

The use of mobile phones in the classroom can improve student’s performance and help them to have better learning outcomes. It can save their time, prevent them from carrying heavy bags with textbooks and notebooks and increase the accessibility of course materials. The possible drawbacks of the use of technology in class are individuals’ distraction and aggression. However, students can eliminate the disadvantages of the utilization of mobile phones by avoiding the factors that can cause negative learning outcomes.

In the contemporary world of fierce competition and business our lives have become practically impossible without cell-phones, for these small and sleek multifunctional devices help us accomplish various tasks throughout the day. With a current development of technology,  one is able to send messages and images, access the internet, check the email box, listen to music, play games, and a lot more with the help of a portable gadget. Consequently, the greater number of people relies on their cell-phones. It is a common thing to watch people walking down the street with their phones clamped to their ears, and for somebody, this phone simply never gives up ringing. No one could have ever predicted cell-phones to play such a vital role in our everyday life. Surprisingly, kids are also adopted the fashion and use the devices in question on daily basis to connect with their parents or simply play their favorite games.

So, eventually, cell-phones have become a necessity, or at least everybody thinks this way. And everything is great until the battery dies or the phone simply breaks down. This is when you find out that you have so many things impossible to accomplish without your mobile gadget, and you begin to realize that your life changes drastically the very moment you ‘lose’ your cell-phone.

Cell-phones can be used not only for business, games, and internet, but also could serve as a lifesaver in an emergency situation. For example, when you run out of gas or get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Without a cell-phone, it would take you quite a while to get to some place with a phone or you would have to wait in vain for someone to stop by and give you a hand. On the other hand, a cell-phone allows you to remotely call 911 in this case and actually save your life. Another issue could be you meeting up with your friends somewhere in downtown at a certain time and it just so happens you cannot make it. It can be for multiple reasons, like getting in traffic, having your car broken down or anything other obstacle, but you still need to let your friends know that you are being late or are not coming at all. Apparently, without having a cell-phone you will not be able to get in touch with them, thus you will not possibly meet up with them under any circumstances. That is when having a cell-phone will give you a chance to contact your friends and make different arrangements. However, the absence of cell-phones could lead to even worse outcomes. Suppose you have a job meeting, which you simply must attend, because your boss is waiting for you to make a presentation for this new client of your company. If you have a cell-phone you can easily notify the boss and he would help you out by gaining some extra time for you. I am under strong impression that most of these customers could still live without the mentioned appliances, but as soon as they purchase it, they become addicted slaves of the machines.
