Essays, short prose compositions on a particular theme or topic, are the bread and butter of academic life. You write them in class, for homework, and on standardized tests to show what you know. Unlike other kinds of academic writing (like the research paper) and creative writing (like short stories and poems), essays allow you to develop your original thoughts on a prompt or question. Essays come in many varieties: they can be expository (fleshing out an idea or claim), descriptive, (explaining a person, place, or thing), narrative (relating a personal experience), or persuasive (attempting to win over a reader). This guide is a collection of dozens of links about academic essay writing that we have researched, categorized, and annotated in order to help you improve your essay writing. 

Essays are different from other forms of writing; in turn, there are different kinds of essays. This section contains general resources for getting to know the essay and its variants. Tumblr is a blogging website where you can share your writing and interact with other writers online. It's easy to add photos, links, audio, and video components.

Writersky provides an online platform for publishing and reading other youth writers' work. Its current content is mostly devoted to fiction.

Publishing Your Essays Online

This teen literary journal publishes in print, on the web, and (more frequently), on a blog. It is committed to ensuring that "teens see their authentic experience reflected on its pages."

The Matador Review

How to Write an Essay

So you’ve finished writing your essay. Now you can breathe a sigh of relief, close down your computer, and head out to celebrate with friends, right? Right! But after you’ve enjoyed that movie or milkshake, take a few more minutes to give your paper a final look before you hand it in. Doing so could help you avoid critical errors or weak organization that could eat away at your grade.

1. Reread the assignment

It’s easy to get carried away when writing an essay. You’ve had an idea that you’re excited about, the words start to flow, and soon you’re congratulating yourself on a job well done. However, while being grabbed by an idea is great, writing in the throes of inspiration can also mean mistakes. These could include not actually answering the question or interpreting the essay prompt properly, including information that isn’t relevant to the prompt, or being so focused on getting it done that you don’t include enough content to support your argument fully.

Make sure to check your essay against the original assignment and ask yourself: Does my paper truly and completely answer this question?

2. Perfect the pacing

Getting the pacing wrong could mean an essay that’s rambling, disjointed, lacking in essential detail, or just not engaging. Check that your paper is properly paced and book-ended by a clear introduction and conclusion.

As a general guide, the introduction and conclusion should each form around a fifth of your essay, with the essay body making up three-fifths. Check that your word count roughly fits these margins to get a perfectly paced essay. If it doesn’t, consider whether a section has too much detail or not enough. In the case of a long introduction, for example, is all of the information necessary? If so, should some of it be in the first paragraph of the paper body instead? For college, an essay is a collection of paragraphs that all work together to express ideas that respond appropriately to the directions and guidelines of a given written assignment. Depending on the instructor, course, or assignment, you might also hear essays called papers, term papers, articles, themes, compositions, reports, writing assignments , and written assessments , but these terms are largely interchangeable at the beginning of college.

Essays and their assignments vary so much that there is no single right kind of essay, so there are no clear answers to questions such as, “How many paragraphs should a college essay have?” or, “How many examples should I use to help convey my ideas?” etc.

But with that said, most essays have a few components in common:

  • The Introduction: the beginning parts that show what is to come
  • The Body: the bulk of the essay that says everything the assignment calls for
  • The Conclusion: the ending parts that emphasize or make sense of what has been said

One rudimentary type of essay that displays these components in a way that’s easy to demonstrate and see is the five-paragraph essay.

The Five Paragraph Essay

The term “five-paragraph essay” refers to a default structure that consists of the following:

  • This should clearly state the main idea of the whole essay, also called the essay’s claim or thesis .
  • This should also include a brief mention of the main ideas to come, which is the essay map .
  • Each paragraph should be about one main point that supports the main idea of the essay (the claim or thesis).
  • The topic sentence of each paragraph should be its main point.
  • The rest of the sentences of each paragraph should explain or support that topic sentence. In general, the method for this support is to provide an explanation, then an example or analogy, and then a conclusion. See more in the textbook section Paragraph Basics.
  • This should clarify the most important ideas or interpretations regarding what the essay has said in the body.

Example Outline of a Five-Paragraph Essay:

  • Claim/Thesis: Unleashed dogs on city streets are a dangerous nuisance.
  • Essay Map : They scare cyclists and pedestrians, present traffic hazards, and damage gardens.
  • Topic Sentence: Dogs can scare cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Cyclists are forced to zigzag on the road.

When the above example outline is turned into complete sentences, arranged in paragraphs, and further elaborated here and there for clarity and transition, it becomes a complete five-paragraph essay, as seen here:

Problems Unleashed

With unfamiliar turning lanes branching and numerous traffic lights flashing and aggressive drivers weaving and honking, the last surprise you need as an urban driver is to suddenly see a dog run by in front of you. Unfortunately, given the current ordinances allowing unleashed dogs, this is the case. Unleashed dogs on city streets are a dangerous nuisance. They not only present traffic hazards, but they also scare cyclists and pedestrians, and they damage property such as gardens.

Loose dogs are traffic hazards. Many dogs won’t hesitate to run across busy roads, and as soon as they do, people must suddenly swerve their cars. But the cars swerve where? In crowded city streets, the chances are there to swerve accidentally into other cars or pedestrians. And this danger is made worse by the tendency of children, who often don’t know any better, coaxing dogs across busy streets. These kinds of dangers are frequent enough for causes that can’t be controlled, and the problem of unleashed dogs, which can be controlled, adds to them unnecessarily.

And these dangers aren’t limited to swerving cars, for dogs can scare cyclists and pedestrians too. When dogs dart across their path, cyclists are forced to zigzag on the road. This leads to wrecks, which for cyclists can cause serious injury. And while adult cyclists might maintain control when confronted with a darting dog, children riding home from school can’t be expected to. They typically panic and turn wildly on their bikes. Even among pedestrians, unleashed dogs present a real danger, for no one can predict how aggressive a loose dog might be. When confronted with such dogs, people who are walking at night freeze in fear.

These are some of the most severe problems with unleashed dogs, but there are others still worthy of concern, such as the damage unleashed dogs do to lawns and gardens. Property owners invest significant time and money into the value of their lawns, but dogs can’t understand or respect that. Let loose without a leash, dogs will simply act like the animals they are. They will step on flowers and vegetables, destroy hedges by urinating on them, and mess up lawns by digging holes.

With the city ordinances as they currently stand, unleashed dogs are allowed to cause danger, injury, fear, and property damage. But this doesn’t have to be the case. The problem of unleashed dogs should be taken seriously by citizens and city council members. We would be wise to stop letting dogs take responsibility for their actions, and start taking responsibility ourselves.

Read the above example outline and essay carefully. Then identify any significant changes in ideas, wording, or organization that the essay has made from the original plan in the outline. Explain why the writer would make those changes.

Using your outline from Exercise 1, create a five-paragraph essay.

Keep in mind that the five-paragraph essay is a rudimentary essay form. It is excellent for demonstrating the key parts of a general essay, and it can address many types of short writing assignments in college, but it is too limited to sustain the more complex kinds of discussions many of the higher-level college essays need to develop and present.

For those kinds of essays, you will need a deeper and more complete understanding of the general essay structure (below), as well as an understanding of various writing modes and strategies, research, and format (the sections and chapters that follow).

Complete General Essay Structure

The following explains how to write an essay using a general essay structure at a far more complete level and with far more depth than the five-paragraph essay. This complete general essay structure can be applied to many of your essay assignments that you will encounter in many of your college classes, regardless of subject matter. Although innumerable alterations and variations are possible in successful essays, these concepts are foundational, and they merit your understanding and application as a student of writing.

Also note that there is no set number of paragraphs using a complete general essay structure, as there is in the five-paragraph essay (one introductory, three body, and one concluding). A good introduction can be broken up into more than one paragraph, as can a conclusion, and body paragraphs might number more than three. But this complete general essay structure can indeed be achieved in five paragraphs as well.

Here are the components of complete general essay structure:

  • Use a phrase that identifies the subject.
  • Consider a title that also suggests the main claim, or thesis (see below, and see the section Thesis for more information)
  • Remember that the title is the writer’s main opportunity to control interpretation.
  • Don’t use a phrase that could easily apply to all the other students’ essays, such as the number or title of the assignment.
  • The Introduction gives the audience a stark impression of what the essay is about.
  • In choosing this glimpse, consider that which is surprising, counter-intuitive, or vivid.
  • Don’t use false questions, such as those about the reader’s personal experience, those that have obvious answers, or those for which you won’t attempt specific or compelling answers.
  • Give a larger understanding of the glimpse above, such as what the important issue is, or why it is significant.
  • Don’t get detailed. Save details for the body paragraphs.
  • Your main claim or thesis is your position or point about the subject, often confirming or denying a proposition.

  • Don’t use a question or a fragment as a main claim or thesis.
  • Don’t confuse the subject with the main claim or thesis.
  • Don’t reference your own essay. State your main points by discussing the subject itself rather than by discussing the essay you’re writing.
  • Don’t get detailed here either.
  • The Body forms the support for your main claim or thesis.
  • Keep in mind that you are not limited to three body paragraphs only, but that three body paragraphs form a good base regardless.
  • Give each main point a separate paragraph. Aim for at least three body paragraphs, which means you should have at least three main points that support your main claim or thesis.
  • Use topic sentences and supporting sentences in each paragraph. Supporting sentences often come in the form of explanations, then examples or analogies, and then conclusions. For more information on the structure of a paragraph, see the section Paragraph Basics.
  • Remember that separate paragraphs not only help the audience read, but they also help writers see their ideas as clarified segments, each of which needs to be completed, connected, and organized.

  • Don’t combine two different focal points into the same paragraph, even if they are about the same subject.
  • Don’t contradict the order of your Essay Map from the Introduction, even if minor points require paragraphs in-between the main points.
  • Don’t veer away from supporting your main claim or thesis. If any necessary minor point appears to do this, immediately follow it up by conveying its support to your thesis.
  • The Conclusion brings your essay to its final and most significant point. Use any one or combination of the following components:
  • One good strategy is to use a brief and poignant phrase or quotation.
  • Another good strategy is to use a metaphor: description of an interesting image that stands for an important idea.
  • Don’t re-state the introduction or be redundant.
  • Don’t bring up new details or issues.
  • Don’t end on a minor point
  • Don’t weaken your essay here with contradiction, false humility, self-deprecation, or un-rebutted opposition.

Using a subject assigned by your instructor, create an outline for a complete general essay structure. In your outline, identify the types of ideas that you would use to address the components and principles explained above. Complete sentences are allowed but not required in such outlines.

The Basics of Essay Writing

What does a good essay need.

An academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence .

  • An academic essay should answer a question or task .
  • It should have a thesis statement (answer to the question) and an argument .
  • It should try to present or discuss something: develop a thesis via a set of closely related points by reasoning and evidence.
  • An academic essay should include relevant examples , supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources.

Basic steps in writing an essay

Although there are some basic steps to writing an assignment, essay writing is not a linear process. You might work through the different stages a number of times in the course of writing an essay. For example, you may go back to the reading and notetaking stage if you find another useful text, or perhaps to reread to locate specific information.

Narrative Essay

Essay basics.

It’s important to keep your audience in mind when writing. Imagine you are writing about your first full day as a college student. How might your writing vary for the audiences below?

* a text you are sending to your best friend

* an email you are sending to a parent or guardian

* a retelling of your experiences for a paper you are writing for your sociology course

In each example above, the method of communication will shape the length and depth of what you write as well as the style (including word choices) and the level of formality. Think about what  content  you may need to include based on what each specific audience already knows or needs to know about your topic.

Most writing has one of these two purposes:

1. to inform

2. to persuade

Generally speaking, an essay is made up of three parts: an introduction (with a thesis), a body consisting of a group of paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Basic Essay Format

Please Note : These guidelines are general suggestions. When in doubt, please refer to your assignment for specifics.

Most essays consist of three parts:

  • the introduction (one paragraph);
  • the body (usually at least three paragraphs), and
  • the conclusion (one paragraph).

Minimum of 5 paragraphs total

Standard Parts of an Essay

Introduction paragraph (including the thesis statement ).

Begin your paper by introducing your topic. 

Parts of an Introduction paragraph:

  • “I danced so much at my birthday party; my feet are killing me!”
  • “The surprise birthday party my friends gave me was amazing.”
  • “I was so glad that the party remained a secret; my friends from the old neighborhood were there, and most surprisingly, I didn’t know I could still dance so much.”

Be sure your Introduction makes a clear, general point, which you can back up with specifics as you lead to your Thesis Statement.

Thesis Statement

The final sentence in your Introduction paragraph should be your Thesis Statement: a   single, clear, and concise sentence stating your essay’s main idea or argument .

According to Denis Johnson of the Rasmussen College Library , you should t hink of a thesis statement as  one complete sentence that expresses your position or tells your story in a nutshell .

The Thesis Statement should always take a stand and justify further discussion .

3 or More Body Paragraphs (and using Transitions )

Now use the Body of your essay to support the main points you presented in your Thesis Statement. Develop each point using one or more paragraphs, and support each point with specific details . Your details may come from research or your direct experience. Refer to your assignment for required supporting documentation (APA citations.)  Your  analysis and discussion of your topic should tie your narrative together and draw conclusions supporting your thesis.

Use effective transition words and phrases to give your paper “flow,” to connect your ideas, and to move from one supporting statement to another.

Conclusion Paragraph

  • “The surprise party my friends had for me was a great reminder of the good old days. It was a wonderful surprise seeing old friends again and have fun like we did when we were younger. My feet will never be the same again.”

Use your conclusion to restate and consolidate all the main points of your essay. You should first restate your Thesis Statement (using slightly different phrasing this time). Give closure to your essay by resolving any outstanding points and leaving your readers with a final thought regarding your argument's future or long-term implications. Your Conclusion is not the place to introduce new ideas or topics that did not appear earlier in your paper.

Guidelines for referring to the works of others in your text using MLA style are covered throughout the  MLA Handbook  and in chapter 7 of the  MLA Style Manual . Both books provide extensive examples, so it's a good idea to consult them if you want to become even more familiar with MLA guidelines or if you have a particular reference question.

Basic in-text citation rules

In MLA Style, referring to the works of others in your text is done using parenthetical citations . This method involves providing relevant source information in parentheses whenever a sentence uses a quotation or paraphrase. Usually, the simplest way to do this is to put all of the source information in parentheses at the end of the sentence (i.e., just before the period). However, as the examples below will illustrate, there are situations where it makes sense to put the parenthetical elsewhere in the sentence, or even to leave information out.

General Guidelines

  • The source information required in a parenthetical citation depends (1) upon the source medium (e.g. print, web, DVD) and (2) upon the source’s entry on the Works Cited page.
  • Any source information that you provide in-text must correspond to the source information on the Works Cited page. More specifically, whatever signal word or phrase you provide to your readers in the text must be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.

In-text citations: Author-page style

MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page. The author's name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence. For example:

Both citations in the examples above, (263) and (Wordsworth 263), tell readers that the information in the sentence can be located on page 263 of a work by an author named Wordsworth. If readers want more information about this source, they can turn to the Works Cited page, where, under the name of Wordsworth, they would find the following information:

Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads . Oxford UP, 1967.

In-text citations for print sources with known author

For print sources like books, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signal word or phrase (usually the author’s last name) and a page number. If you provide the signal word/phrase in the sentence, you do not need to include it in the parenthetical citation.

These examples must correspond to an entry that begins with Burke, which will be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of an entry on the Works Cited page:

Burke, Kenneth. Language as Symbolic Action: Essays on Life, Literature, and Method . University of California Press, 1966.

In-text citations for print sources by a corporate author

When a source has a corporate author, it is acceptable to use the name of the corporation followed by the page number for the in-text citation. You should also use abbreviations (e.g., nat'l for national) where appropriate, so as to avoid interrupting the flow of reading with overly long parenthetical citations.

In-text citations for sources with non-standard labeling systems

If a source uses a labeling or numbering system other than page numbers, such as a script or poetry, precede the citation with said label. When citing a poem, for instance, the parenthetical would begin with the word “line”, and then the line number or range. For example, the examination of William Blake’s poem “The Tyger” would be cited as such:

The speaker makes an ardent call for the exploration of the connection between the violence of nature and the divinity of creation. “In what distant deeps or skies. / Burnt the fire of thine eyes," they ask in reference to the tiger as they attempt to reconcile their intimidation with their relationship to creationism (lines 5-6).

Longer labels, such as chapters (ch.) and scenes (sc.), should be abbreviated.

In-text citations for print sources with no known author

When a source has no known author, use a shortened title of the work instead of an author name, following these guidelines.

Place the title in quotation marks if it's a short work (such as an article) or italicize it if it's a longer work (e.g. plays, books, television shows, entire Web sites) and provide a page number if it is available.

Titles longer than a standard noun phrase should be shortened into a noun phrase by excluding articles. For example, To the Lighthouse would be shortened to Lighthouse .

If the title cannot be easily shortened into a noun phrase, the title should be cut after the first clause, phrase, or punctuation:

In this example, since the reader does not know the author of the article, an abbreviated title appears in the parenthetical citation, and the full title of the article appears first at the left-hand margin of its respective entry on the Works Cited page. Thus, the writer includes the title in quotation marks as the signal phrase in the parenthetical citation in order to lead the reader directly to the source on the Works Cited page. The Works Cited entry appears as follows:

"The Impact of Global Warming in North America." Global Warming: Early Signs . 1999. www.climatehotmap.org/. Accessed 23 Mar. 2009.

If the title of the work begins with a quotation mark, such as a title that refers to another work, that quote or quoted title can be used as the shortened title. The single quotation marks must be included in the parenthetical, rather than the double quotation.

Parenthetical citations and Works Cited pages, used in conjunction, allow readers to know which sources you consulted in writing your essay, so that they can either verify your interpretation of the sources or use them in their own scholarly work.

Author-page citation for classic and literary works with multiple editions

Page numbers are always required, but additional citation information can help literary scholars, who may have a different edition of a classic work, like Marx and Engels's  The Communist Manifesto . In such cases, give the page number of your edition (making sure the edition is listed in your Works Cited page, of course) followed by a semicolon, and then the appropriate abbreviations for volume (vol.), book (bk.), part (pt.), chapter (ch.), section (sec.), or paragraph (par.). For example:

Author-page citation for works in an anthology, periodical, or collection

When you cite a work that appears inside a larger source (for instance, an article in a periodical or an essay in a collection), cite the author of the  internal source (i.e., the article or essay). For example, to cite Albert Einstein's article "A Brief Outline of the Theory of Relativity," which was published in  Nature  in 1921, you might write something like this:

Citing authors with same last names

Sometimes more information is necessary to identify the source from which a quotation is taken. For instance, if two or more authors have the same last name, provide both authors' first initials (or even the authors' full name if different authors share initials) in your citation. For example:

For a source with two authors, list the authors’ last names in the text or in the parenthetical citation:

For a source with three or more authors, list only the first author’s last name, and replace the additional names with et al.

Franck, Caroline, et al. “Agricultural Subsidies and the American Obesity Epidemic.” American Journal of Preventative Medicine , vol. 45, no. 3, Sept. 2013, pp. 327-333.

Citing multiple works by the same author

If you cite more than one work by an author, include a shortened title for the particular work from which you are quoting to distinguish it from the others. Put short titles of books in italics and short titles of articles in quotation marks.

Citing two articles by the same author :

Citing two books by the same author :

Additionally, if the author's name is not mentioned in the sentence, format your citation with the author's name followed by a comma, followed by a shortened title of the work, and, when appropriate, the page number(s):

Citing multivolume works

If you cite from different volumes of a multivolume work, always include the volume number followed by a colon. Put a space after the colon, then provide the page number(s). (If you only cite from one volume, provide only the page number in parentheses.)

Citing the Bible

In your first parenthetical citation, you want to make clear which Bible you're using (and underline or italicize the title), as each version varies in its translation, followed by book (do not italicize or underline), chapter, and verse. For example:

If future references employ the same edition of the Bible you’re using, list only the book, chapter, and verse in the parenthetical citation:

John of Patmos echoes this passage when describing his vision (Rev. 4.6-8).

Citing indirect sources

Sometimes you may have to use an indirect source. An indirect source is a source cited within another source. For such indirect quotations, use "qtd. in" to indicate the source you actually consulted. For example:

Note that, in most cases, a responsible researcher will attempt to find the original source, rather than citing an indirect source.

Citing transcripts, plays, or screenplays

Sources that take the form of a dialogue involving two or more participants have special guidelines for their quotation and citation. Each line of dialogue should begin with the speaker's name written in all capitals and indented half an inch. A period follows the name (e.g., JAMES.) . After the period, write the dialogue. Each successive line after the first should receive an additional indentation. When another person begins speaking, start a new line with that person's name indented only half an inch. Repeat this pattern each time the speaker changes. You can include stage directions in the quote if they appear in the original source.

Conclude with a parenthetical that explains where to find the excerpt in the source. Usually, the author and title of the source can be given in a signal phrase before quoting the excerpt, so the concluding parenthetical will often just contain location information like page numbers or act/scene indicators.

Here is an example from O'Neill's  The Iceman Cometh.

WILLIE. (Pleadingly) Give me a drink, Rocky. Harry said it was all right. God, I need a drink.

ROCKY. Den grab it. It's right under your nose.

WILLIE. (Avidly) Thanks. (He takes the bottle with both twitching hands and tilts it to his lips and gulps down the whiskey in big swallows.) (1.1)

Citing non-print or sources from the Internet

With more and more scholarly work published on the Internet, you may have to cite sources you found in digital environments. While many sources on the Internet should not be used for scholarly work (reference the OWL's  Evaluating Sources of Information  resource), some Web sources are perfectly acceptable for research. When creating in-text citations for electronic, film, or Internet sources, remember that your citation must reference the source on your Works Cited page.

Sometimes writers are confused with how to craft parenthetical citations for electronic sources because of the absence of page numbers. However, these sorts of entries often do not require a page number in the parenthetical citation. For electronic and Internet sources, follow the following guidelines:

  • Include in the text the first item that appears in the Work Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (e.g. author name, article name, website name, film name).
  • Do not provide paragraph numbers or page numbers based on your Web browser’s print preview function.
  • Unless you must list the Web site name in the signal phrase in order to get the reader to the appropriate entry, do not include URLs in-text. Only provide partial URLs such as when the name of the site includes, for example, a domain name, like  CNN.com  or  Forbes.com,  as opposed to writing out http://www.cnn.com or http://www.forbes.com.

Miscellaneous non-print sources

Two types of non-print sources you may encounter are films and lectures/presentations:

In the two examples above “Herzog” (a film’s director) and “Yates” (a presentor) lead the reader to the first item in each citation’s respective entry on the Works Cited page:

Electronic sources

Electronic sources may include web pages and online news or magazine articles:

In the first example (an online magazine article), the writer has chosen not to include the author name in-text; however, two entries from the same author appear in the Works Cited. Thus, the writer includes both the author’s last name and the article title in the parenthetical citation in order to lead the reader to the appropriate entry on the Works Cited page (see below).

In the second example (a web page), a parenthetical citation is not necessary because the page does not list an author, and the title of the article, “MLA Formatting and Style Guide,” is used as a signal phrase within the sentence. If the title of the article was not named in the sentence, an abbreviated version would appear in a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence. Both corresponding Works Cited entries are as follows:

Taylor, Rumsey. "Fitzcarraldo." Slant , 13 Jun. 2003, www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/fitzcarraldo/. Accessed 29 Sep. 2009.

Multiple citations

To cite multiple sources in the same parenthetical reference, separate the citations by a semi-colon:

Time-based media sources

When creating in-text citations for media that has a runtime, such as a movie or podcast, include the range of hours, minutes and seconds you plan to reference. For example: (00:02:15-00:02:35).

When a citation is not needed

Common sense and ethics should determine your need for documenting sources. You do not need to give sources for familiar proverbs, well-known quotations, or common knowledge (For example, it is expected that U.S. citizens know that George Washington was the first President.). Remember that citing sources is a rhetorical task, and, as such, can vary based on your audience. If you’re writing for an expert audience of a scholarly journal, for example, you may need to deal with expectations of what constitutes “common knowledge” that differ from common norms.

Other Sources

The MLA Handbook describes how to cite many different kinds of authors and content creators. However, you may occasionally encounter a source or author category that the handbook does not describe, making the best way to proceed can be unclear.

In these cases, it's typically acceptable to apply the general principles of MLA citation to the new kind of source in a way that's consistent and sensible. A good way to do this is to simply use the standard MLA directions for a type of source that resembles the source you want to cite.

You may also want to investigate whether a third-party organization has provided directions for how to cite this kind of source. For example, Norquest College provides guidelines for citing Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers⁠ —an author category that does not appear in the MLA Handbook . In cases like this, however, it's a good idea to ask your instructor or supervisor whether using third-party citation guidelines might present problems.

NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."

This Is a Crucial Moment to Stand Up to Islamophobia. Instead, Democrats Are Caving.

An Arab American student hit by a car , while wearing a T-shirt with Arabic writing on it at Stanford University in California.

Since Oct. 7, when Hamas led a violent attack against civilians in Israel, there’s been a surge in reports of Islamophobic bias—the largest uptick since Donald Trump announced his Muslim ban in December 2015, according to Corey Saylor , director of research and advocacy at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Islamophobia tends to spike when there’s “any media exposure to Muslim-related issues,” according to one 2016 study by the University of Texas at Austin—and that’s been the case in the U.S. since the Israel-Hamas war began, leaving American Muslims afraid for their safety at home as they’re grieving the bloodshed abroad. (The war in Gaza has since killed upwards of 30,000 Palestinian civilians and left many more hungry as famine grips the enclave.)

This is the kind of time when you might expect Democrats—the party that has in recent decades identified themselves with equity and social justice —to recommit to fighting Islamophobia. Instead, they’re allowing Islamophobia to sabotage the judicial nomination of a highly qualified candidate: Adeel Mangi, an attorney from New Jersey, who, if confirmed, would become the first-ever Muslim attorney to sit on a federal appeals court.

In December, at Mangi’s confirmation hearing, GOP senators fired off leading questions laced with racism without a single reference to the nominee’s actual judicial experience. Adding insult to injury, Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen of Nevada, along with West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, in recent weeks have all publicly said they would vote “no” on confirming Mangi, knowing full well their party’s razor-thin Senate majority means any defections will surely sink his nomination.

Confirming Mangi would add some sorely needed diversity to our nation’s courts—the federal bench is currently 66 percent white —and a check on biases. A study by the Center for American Progress found that judges belonging to different racial, ethnic, and religious groups use their unique backgrounds and life experiences to shape their rulings, and that it overall has a net positive impact on our judiciary. “Women judges and judges of color have spoken out about gender and racial bias on the courts and led calls for reforms,” said CAP, noting that judges of different backgrounds also enhance the courtroom experience for defendants and lawyers, regardless of their case’s outcome.

And the seat Mangi has been nominated to, the 3 rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is an especially important bench. It covers Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, states where banks and other corporations tend to have a big presence. ( Over 50 percent of publicly traded companies are incorporated in Delaware.) Currently, the 3 rd Circuit has a 7–6 conservative majority, and Mangi’s confirmation would bring some much needed balance.

The Democrats who have vowed to vote “no” on Mangi’s confirmation are openly giving credence to Islamophobia, calling into question what the party actually stands for.

At a dark time for American Muslims, Mangi’s historic nomination feels like a rare bright spot. He represents the best of the immigrant struggle—coming into a new country, seeking a better life while adapting to a new culture. Mangi became a civil servant here in the U.S., fighting for democracy on behalf of vulnerable Americans, and it’s made our country better. Mangi, born and raised in Pakistan, studied law at Oxford University, then immigrated to the U.S. at 22 years old to attend Harvard University. He began practicing law in the U.S. and became the youngest associate to make partner at the New York law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP. He worked on historic cases, including a landmark wrongful death lawsuit of a mentally ill Black man at a New York maximum security prison, which led to a $5 million payout to the victim’s family and required cameras and microphones to be installed throughout the prison.

Mangi also successfully fought for mosques to be built in New Jersey after their permits were denied, a case that earned a $3.25 million settlement and involved Donald Trump’s Justice Department. Mangi has also been a fierce advocate for immigrants, joining a coalition of different faith groups in advocating for keeping DACA, and the LQBTQ+ community, writing an amicus brief defending Title VII.

But Republicans have made Mangi the target of a baseless smear campaign that accuses him of antisemitism over a Rutgers University event he was once tangentially involved with.

Mangi was an advisory board member for Rutgers Law School’s Center for Security, Race and Rights , from 2019 to 2023. In 2021 the center co-sponsored a panel discussion, which was hosted by the People’s Forum, in honor of the 20 th anniversary of 9/11.* Sami Al-Arian was a featured speaker, a Florida professor who pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (a group the U.S. considers a terrorist organization) and was sentenced to prison. However, CSRR did not have a hand in picking Al-Arian has the event’s speaker.

Mangi also testified that he served as an adviser to Rutgers Law School, meeting just once a year to offer advice on the university’s academic issues. He was not aware of that 9/11 anniversary event happening, let alone did he have a say in which speakers were selected. Yet, Republican Sen. John Kennedy challenged that assertion, asking Mangi, “Is this the way you celebrate 9/11?”

“I don’t know any of these people or that event,” said Mangi. “I certainly and unequivocally would condemn any terrorism.”

Other Republicans joined in, incessantly focusing on Mangi’s personal perspective on the Israel-Hamas war, while completely ignoring the experience and skills he would bring to the federal judiciary. “Do you believe that Jews are colonial settlers in Israel?,” asked Republican Sen. Tom Cotton . “Do you condemn the atrocities of the Hamas terrorists?,” asked Republican Sen. Ted Cruz .

Over and over again, Mangi explained that international policy matters were not something he could weigh in on. “I have no basis as a judicial nominee to cast views on the Middle East,” said Mangi , when responding to a question about whether he believes Israel is a violent settler colonial state from Republican Sen. Josh Hawley. However, Mangi made clear that he believes “the events of Oct. 7 were a horror involving the deaths of innocent civilians,” and that he had “no patience—none—for any attempts to justify or defend those events.”

This kind of racism has become commonplace for the GOP. Consider when TikTok CEO Shou Chew was called to testify before Congress, and Republicans continuously insisted he was affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, despite Chew confirming he is a citizen of Singapore—which bans dual citizenship. And there’s Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who, when calling to censure one of only three Muslim members of Congress, said “Representative Ilhan Omar of Somalia—I mean Minnesota.”

Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee for president and the Republican Party’s standard bearer of extremism, told a crowd of supporters in December that immigrants coming into the U.S. are “poisoning the blood of our country.” Democrats are well aware of these bigoted tactics and recognize that the GOP has “concluded that racism might be bad morals but it’s good politics,” as New York Rep. Ritchie Torres put it to the New York Times .

Nevertheless, Cortez Masto was the first Democrat to publicly announce she would not vote for Mangi because of his affiliation with the Alliance of Families for Justice , a criminal justice reform group. She was quickly joined by fellow Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen, who said she could not vote for Mangi because of “concerns I’ve heard from law enforcement in Nevada,” without offering more specific details. (Rosen’s decision ignores the other five law enforcement agencies that endorsed Mangi as someone who “demonstrated commitment to upholding the highest ethics and fair administration of the law.”)

Unsurprisingly, Manchin, who is officially retiring from Congress after his current term ends this year, also said he won’t vote for Mangi unless he can earn at least one vote from Republicans .

Since Rosen is up for reelection in a swing state this year, she’s probably taking note of what’s happening in other swing states, like Pennsylvania. The Judicial Crisis Network, an ultra-right-wing group focused on confirming conservative judges across the country, is funding ads smearing Mangi by declaring him antisemitic . The ads are also running in Montana in a pressure campaign to force the state’s sole Democratic lawmaker, Sen. Jon Tester, to vote “no” on Mangi.

In response to Republicans’ accusations of antisemitism, 15 Jewish advocacy groups that collectively represent more than 1 million Americans came together to offer a glowing endorsement of Mangi. And the American Jewish Committee not only endorsed him but went so far as to encourage senators to “disregard the untoward implications underlying that unnecessary and unhelpful line of questioning.” They were joined by the Anti-Defamation League—the most prominent Jewish advocacy group in the world—which also fully endorsed Mangi and suggested the way in which senators questioned him “appear to have been motivated by bias towards his religion.”

Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for confirming judicial nominees, defended Mangi and called out Republican Sen. John Kennedy, who asked the nominee how he celebrated 9/11. “Think about that for a second. Because [Mangi] is Muslim, the senator thought it was appropriate to ask him if it was appropriate to celebrate 9/11 in his home,” said Durbin . “He of course said ‘no.’ He was a resident of New York and thought it was a tragedy that occurred to our nation, and that he had friends and family who were affected by that tragedy.” Durbin urged his colleagues to dismiss Republicans’ smear campaign and evaluate Mangi on his record.

The White House has also tried damage control measures, demanding Cruz, Hawley, and Cotton apologize to Mangi. “He represents the best of America, and when confirmed, Mr. Mangi will not only make history—he will make an outstanding judge,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates told NBC News .

In this current climate, simply chiding the Republicans who harassed Mangi and urging Democrats to vote for him isn’t enough. The White House must hold Cortez Masto, Rosen, and Manchin accountable for the party’s vow to condemn “the decades-long campaign to demonize and dehumanize the Muslim faith community”—because if they don’t stand against Islamophobia at a moment like this, what do they stand for in the first place?

Remarks as Prepared for Delivery

Thank you, Dawn, for that very kind introduction — and thank you all for welcoming me and for being here.

I’m especially grateful to Chief White for hosting us at the Detroit Police Department.

It’s a privilege to join Detroit’s law enforcement and community leaders today — who are working together to tackle violent crime to make this community safer.

I’m here to listen and learn because the work of One Detroit is having a real impact — and it’s being felt in reduced levels of violent crime across this city.

The Department of Justice has no higher priority than keeping our communities safe, and we are all-in on reversing the violent crime uptick that started in 2020, during the pandemic.

Every jurisdiction faces unique challenges — large or small, rural or urban — no community can tackle them alone.

So, in 2021, the Justice Department announced a comprehensive strategy to reduce violent crime — a strategy rooted in local communities and built on four distinct pillars:

  • Going after the most significant drivers of violent crime — especially gun crimes and violent repeat offenders;
  • Fostering trust and earning legitimacy in the communities we serve;
  • Investing in community-based prevention and intervention programs; and
  • Measuring the results of our efforts by our impact, through actual decreases in violent crime.

We are committed to an approach that is data-driven and centered on what federal law enforcement does best: and that’s serving as a force multiplier with our state and local law enforcement partners and bringing the resources needed to go after the drivers of violent crime.

Our strategy is paying real dividends — when it comes to violent crime, those dividends take the form of lives saved, families united, and safer communities.

One Detroit brings together community members and law enforcement; and it brings local solutions to local challenges.

When data informs strategy that is guided by community; when trust develops into real partnership; and when prevention, intervention, and enforcement all work hand in hand; that’s a formula for success against violent crime.

And that’s what we’re seeing here in Detroit and in more and more communities throughout the country.

Over the past year, violent crime is on a broad downward trajectory across the United States.

And Detroit is leading the charge. As of this month, every category of violent crime is declining – some to well below pre-pandemic levels.

Detroit closed out 2023 with the fewest homicides on record — in over 50 years. 

But we’re not letting up. Here in the Motor City and across the nation, we’re keeping our foot on the gas when it comes to our violent crime reduction strategy.

A few minutes ago, I visited Detroit’s Real-Time Crime Center, which the Justice Department is proud to support.

I saw real-time data in action helping federal, state, and local law enforcement collaborate to tackle violent crime.

Just last week, by deploying ATF crime gun intelligence, like the kind being used at the Real-Time Crime Center, the U.S. Attorney’s Office — working with its partners — secured a conviction of a man who trafficked 35 guns into the city of Detroit.

Put simply, these types of intelligence centers, whether focused on break-ins or gun crimes, or identifying crime hotspots are keeping our citizens safer.

Let me conclude where I started — by thanking all of you here who are united as One Detroit.

This collection of leaders shows the power of a community that pulls together – members of law enforcement, nonprofits, faith leaders, policymakers, and elected officials — all addressing every element of violent crime: from enforcement to prevention to outreach to re-entry.

Look around this table. There are a lot of folks here, bringing different perspectives, tools, and expertise.  

To solve big problems, we need big tables — and everyone needs a seat.

I want to thank Dawn Ison and her team at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their work and for the work represented by all of you and your teams here today.

I also want to thank Chief White, Deputy Mayor Bettison, and Wayne County Prosecutor Worthy for joining us today and for everything you and your teams are doing to drive down violent crime – along with our law enforcement partners from the ATF, DEA, and FBI.

As we progress into the new year and I celebrate my fifth year working at Motive as Studio General Manager, I’m proud to share more news on how we maintain our long-term strategy of two world-class game teams developing projects side by side.

In my last update, I spoke about the studio going through an important period of evolution; we invested in developing our people in more ways than ever, and we improved our workspaces for teams to collaborate to their fullest and deliver the best game possible. That period of evolution and elevation continues today, with the exciting announcement that a group of developers from Motive are joining the talented teams at Criterion, DICE and Ripple Effect to continue unlocking the full potential of Battlefield. 

The directors who delivered our Dead Space remake in 2023, Philippe Ducharme (Executive Producer) and Roman Campos-Oriola (Creative Director), will build a team at Motive to work alongside the Battlefield studios around the world creating what’s next for Battlefield– a universe across both multiplayer and single-player experiences. Their proven expertise in storytelling, immersive battles and developing on the Frostbite engine uniquely positions them to help advance the vision for Battlefield, led by Vince Zampella (EVP, Group GM of Respawn and Battlefield) and Byron Beede (SVP, GM Battlefield).

In parallel, development continues to move forward on our Iron Man project, led by Olivier Proulx (Executive Producer) and Ian Frazier (Creative Director). The team made excellent progress this year, hitting a major internal milestone and laying a robust foundation for the journey ahead. Iron Man is an important priority for Motive, and I’m very proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far.
