Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world, a game that arouses the type of hot-tempered passions not experienced in other sports. Like other sporting activities in Africa, football, however, strives for status, the assertion of identity, the maintenance of power in one form or another, and the indoctrination of youth into the culture of their elders. Giulianotti maintains that football “is one of the great cultural institutions, like education and the mass media, which shapes and cements national identities throughout the world.” Tamir Bar-On points out that “in countries that face stark economic and political problems, from extreme poverty to a ‘war on drugs,’ football [soccer] acts as the great societal equalizer, as it provides popular expressions of celebration and pride for the national team victories.”

The study explores the institutional history of professional soccer (football) as played by whites in South Africa during apartheid. It argues that a range of political, economic and social factors impacted the sport during this time, ultimately contributing towards the significant decline in white soccer institutions during the 1970s and 1980s. The study contributes to the broader literature exploring the historical nexus between sport, politics and race in South Africa.

In this chapter I discuss how the relationship between sport, social identities and language has been treated within the sociology of sports and in discourse and sociolinguistic studies. I reflect on what we can learn about language, identities and super-diversity from studying sport and whether sport as such makes a distinctive contribution to sociolinguistic research. I describe some trends in the sport-focussed research related to social identities and language, namely: A concern with confirming sport as significant and distinctive research object; an increasing interest in the discursive and representational aspects of sport (linguistic practices) and in sport as globalized, transnational and super-diverse; sport as closely related to social stratification and categorisation (ethnic, national, gendered, classed etc.) and therefore also inequality and power; but also as civilising and thereby potentially socialising and a means for overcoming differences. In addition, I consider some of the methodological and theoretical issues raised by these research trends, and engage in a more detailed discussion of assumptions about the political and pedagogical potential of sport to create societal coherence based on insights from a multilevel sociolinguistic and ethnographic case study of an urban martial arts community. This lead me to conclude that although sport constitutes an important research area for human and social sciences we need to be aware that sport is not just sport. Like other popular cultural forms sport relates to a range of different social arenas and activities, and we need to be clearer and more specific about what kinds of social and linguistic processes we want to investigate and how sport relates to that, if we wish to study linguistic practices and social identities, rather than engage in disciplinary confirmation of sport as an independent field.

The theoretical framework of this paper is based upon the views of Polish and Anglo-Saxon sociolinguists on the concepts of sociolect and register. In the main section the author gives a brief overview of the language of soccer and distinguishes 10 subvarieties of this language, which differ from each other mainly in lexico-grammatical as well as stylistic features. Finally, the author attempts to categorize each of these subvarieties as either a sociolect or a register.

The central argument in Alain Ricard’s Le Sable de Babel. Traduction et apartheid explores the complex relationship between translation as a practice that builds bridges and makes connections and apartheid as a set of concepts, laws and institutions that sought to implement racial separateness. Ricard emphasizes the ethics at work in dialogic translation; a practice that involves the creation of meaning and intercultural dialogue. Following the myth of Babel in the Bible according to which people were dispersed into different language groups, Ricard takes up Paul Ricoeur’s invitation to embrace translation as a means of overcoming these linguistic divisions with an ethics of hospitality across languages (Ricoeur, Sur la traduction, 2004). Of course, any openness to transcend the boundaries of language and ethnicity through translation was banished under apartheid with the adoption of racist laws, the segregation of space and the virtual exclusion of translation from Bantu education programs. Through the separation of people by race came connections between territory (inhabited by whites, blacks, coloreds, Indians), language (Afrikans, Xhosa, Zulu, etc.) and political rights in South Africa. Whereas many may have seen the form of despotism that was set up in South Africa under apartheid as somehow unique to that regime (1948-1994), Mahmood Mamdani has argued that the “decentralized despotism” under apartheid can and should be seen as exemplary of colonial relations of domination everywhere on the continent (Mamdani, Citizen and Subject: Contemporary Africa and the Legacy of Late Colonialism, 1997). Ricard builds on Mamdani’s observations and argues that African literature as a basic expression of freedom came up against a concept of human relations defined by the domination of one group by another across the continent.

essay in afrikaans about soccer

African women are getting a chance to shine in soccer after years of watching from the sideline

Sport African women are getting a chance to shine in soccer after years of watching from the sideline

A girl stands with a soccer ball, in a South Sudan uniform.

Twenty-three-year-old Kevin Opia shares a passion for football with her twin brother Robert.

"He's my biggest role model in this game. I look up to him," she says.

She used to tag along with him and his mates whenever they would go to the local park for a kickabout.

"I'd always just kind of watch them, and sometimes even join them if they'd let me."

A young woman holding flwoers standing next to her mum and brother.

A primary school teacher helped Opia gain the confidence to step out of her brother's shadow and join a team.

"She basically trained me to be the best version I can be within the sport.

"I started to see that people saw potential in me.

"That made me really excited and really accepted."

A young African soccer player dribbles the ball past an opponent.

Opia was encouraged to focus more on her education rather than playing sports.

"Whereas my brother, he kinda had that persistence to just keep pushing and go after his dreams."

Football organiser Aminata Madua says it's a common attitude among African families.

"The mum would be happy for her to stay home, watch the kids, while the boys go out and kick the football.

"It was just us supporting men, going down to watch our brothers, our uncles playing," she says.

20240418_003334970_iOS

Ms Madua says she was inspired by the heroics of the Matildas at last year's Women's World Cup.

She also met up at African restaurants with friends and family to watch Nigeria's impressive run.

"I'm fangirling over how good they were.

"Seeing these women play so good and just as great as the men — the hype was just as amazing."

Three Nigeria teammates celebrate with Chiamaka Nnadozie after the Women's World Cup match against Canada.

For years, the annual African Cup NSW has brought the community together, with players representing their home country.

Ms Madua says it has been a struggle to gather enough players to field women's sides, and when they did, they were often scheduled to play early in the morning.

"No-one else is gonna wake up to come watch and support, and it's disheartening.

"This is why we're here to break that barrier for the future generations."

Two older football organisers with two players.

She's been appointed vice-president of Kama Umoja, a standalone soccer tournament for African women that kicks off in October.

"We've been doing this for so many years and our voices were in the background.

"It's one of the first women's cups in NSW for women of colour, solely based just for us."

A team photo with players from different nations.

It's hoped the tournament will create discussions in the community about the benefits of sport.

"Having those conversations is going to stem from the parents first.

"We're able to speak to them in such a way that they understand that their daughters are just as great as the men."

A girl leans against a wall with a soccer ball.

Opia will be representing her home nation South Sudan at Kama Umoja.

She played in the first women's side at the African Cup and says there are now plenty more girls willing to sign up to play.

"I want the girls to be in their own zone, in their own empowerment, and just have a great time," she says.

"We're all just trying to come together as one and play that sport that we all love."

Sophia Bush confirms relationship with Ashlyn Harris: ‘The universe had been conspiring for me’

Sophia Bush finally feels like she can breathe after coming out as queer and opening up about her long-rumored relationship with soccer star Ashlyn Harris.

“When I take stock of the last few years, I can tell you that I have never operated out of more integrity in my life. I hope that’s clear enough for everyone speculating out there,” the “One Tree Hill” alum wrote Thursday in an essay for the April issue of Glamour .

Sophia Bush, soccer star Ashlyn Harris spark dating rumors after respective divorces

‘One Tree Hill’ alum Sophia Bush and retired USWNT goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris reportedly ‘went out on their first dinner date a couple of weeks ago.’

Oct. 18, 2023

The 41-year-old detailed how her one-year marriage to Grant Hughes felt phony and fell apart amid her grueling fertility issues. She also explained how her recovery from that relationship led her to Harris, who simultaneously had been going through her own divorce from former teammate Ali Krieger.

Bush wrote that after her storybook wedding — which she doesn’t regret — she found herself “in the depths and heartbreak of the fertility process.” She kept all that private as she endured months of ultrasounds, hormone shots, blood draws that led to scar tissue in her veins and numerous egg retrievals, “while simultaneously realizing the person I had chosen to be my partner didn’t necessarily speak the same emotional language I did.”

The “Work in Progress” and “Drama Queens” podcast host said she felt something in her “seismically shift” about six months into that journey and “knew deep down that I absolutely had made a mistake,” ultimately filing for divorce after about 13 months of marriage. Her separation from Hughes, an entrepreneur and real estate investor, saw Bush moving to London “to get out of our house” and doing a play to “jump-start the joy” she had been chasing. (She withdrew from “2:22 A Ghost Story” in July 2023 due to illness.)

The “Love, Victor” and “Chicago P.D.” actor moved back to her empty home in L.A. last summer and said that an ever-expanding group of women in her life started opening up about their own issues. That group included the “kind ear” of the U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper, whom she’d first met in 2019. She didn’t expect to find love there.

“I don’t know how else to say it other than: I didn’t see it until I saw it. And I think it’s very easy not to see something that’s been in front of your face for a long time when you’d never looked at it as an option and you had never been looked at as an option.”

It took other people in their “safe support bubble” to point out to Bush that she and Harris would finish each other’s sentences or be deeply affected by the same things, she wrote.

Sophia Bush thinks she is one of the better Bushes

April 21, 2024

Reports about the couple’s romance surfaced in October, months after they each filed for divorce. The “One Tree Hill” alum and the U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper reportedly went out on their first dinner date a couple of weeks prior, People reported at the time, and TMZ asserted that they were “officially a thing.”

In her essay, Bush shed light on that purported first date, which she described as a 4½-hour meal that was “truly one of the most surreal experiences of my life thus far.”

“I do know that for a sparkly moment I felt like maybe the universe had been conspiring for me,” she wrote. But navigating the judgment she felt in the public eye was disheartening.

“The ones who said I’d left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women — my partners have known what I’m into for as long as I have (so that’s not it, y’all, sorry!),” she wrote, noting that she didn’t leave her marriage because of some random rendezvous but rather after a year of “doing the most soul-crushing work of my life.”

Bush also fawned over her partner‘s integrity and love for her children. As for her identity, the life-long LGBTQIA+ ally described feeling at home with the queer community.

Sophia Bush comes out as queer, confirms relationship with Ashlyn Harris

Sophia Bush

Actor Sophia Bush came out as queer in an emotional essay in Glamour and confirmed she’s in a relationship with retired U.S. Women’s National Team soccer player Ashlyn Harris.

“I sort of hate the notion of having to come out in 2024,” Bush wrote in a cover story for the fashion magazine published Thursday. “But I’m deeply aware that we are having this conversation in a year when we’re seeing the most aggressive attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in modern history.”

Bush noted that there were more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills proposed in state legislatures last year and said this motivated her to “give the act of coming out the respect and honor it deserves.”

“I’ve experienced so much safety, respect, and love in the queer community, as an ally all of my life, that, as I came into myself, I already felt it was my home,” she wrote. “I think I’ve always known that my sexuality exists on a spectrum. Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer . I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.”

The “One Tree Hill” star filed for divorce from entrepreneur Grant Hughes in August. People magazine first reported in October that Bush and Harris were dating, but neither confirmed nor commented on the report. The pair later attended an Oscar’s viewing party together in March .

In the essay, Bush addressed online rumors that her relationship with Harris began before Harris had officially divorced from fellow soccer star Ali Krieger, in September.

“Everyone that matters to me knows what’s true and what isn’t,” Bush wrote. “But even still there’s a part of me that’s a ferocious defender, who wants to correct the record piece by piece. But my better self, with her earned patience, has to sit back and ask, What’s the f------- point? For who? For internet trolls? No, thank you. I’ll spend my precious time doing things I love instead.”

Bush said that after news about her and Harris became public, her mom told her that a friend called and said, “Well, this can’t be true. I mean, your daughter isn’t gay .”

“My mom felt that it was obvious, from the way her friend emphasized the word, that she meant it judgmentally,” Bush wrote. “And you know what my mom said? ‘Oh honey, I think she’s pretty gay. And she’s happy .’”

Bush wrote that she felt like she was wearing a weighted vest that she could finally put down.

“I finally feel like I can breathe,” Bush wrote. “I turned 41 last summer, amid all of this, and I heard the words I was saying to my best friend as they came out of my mouth. ‘I feel like this is my first birthday,’ I told her. This year was my very first birthday.”

Sophia Bush comes out as queer in public essay, opens up about divorce

"One Tree Hill" star Sophia Bush addressed her recent divorce and rumors of infidelity in a candid personal essay for Glamour magazine . In the cover story for the fashion magazine, Bush also came out as queer and confirmed that she is dating retired U.S. Women's National Team soccer player Ashlyn Harris.

In the essay, she described the cold feet she experienced before tying the knot with Hughes in July 2022.

"In April of 2022 I was close to calling off my wedding. Instead of running away, I doubled down on being a model wife," she wrote.

Bush said she kept trying to tell herself that "relationships are hard" and that "marriage takes compromise" but that the "heartbreak of the fertility process" led her to reassess her marriage.

"Six months into that journey, I think I knew deep down that I absolutely had made a mistake. It would take my head and heart a while longer to understand what my bones already knew," she wrote.

Bush filed for divorce from entrepreneur Grant Hughes in August 2023 after a year of marriage. A month later, Harris filed for divorce from her former teammate Ali Krieger . Shortly after both divorces became public, it was reported Bush and Harris were dating.

In her essay, Bush said the decision to file for divorce took time – and came after many conversations with "groups of women in my life [who] started opening up about issues they were going through in their own homes." Harris, she said, was one of those women. They had met in 2019.

"She's been such a kind ear for those of us who opened up about our problems during a shared weekend of speaking engagements at a fancy conference in Cannes, and soon it became clear that she needed our ears too."

Bush said she didn't expect to find love in this support system and felt her feelings for Harris developed slowly and simultaneously overnight.

"And I think it's very easy not to see something that's been in front of your face for a long time when you'd never looked at it as an option and you had never been looked at as an option," she wrote in the essay.

Elsewhere, social media viewed their love as an affair.

"The online rumor mill began to spit in the ugliest ways. There were blatant lies. Violent threats. There were accusations of being a home-wrecker," she wrote in the essay. "The ones who said I'd left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women — my partners have known what I'm into for as long as I have."

She added: "The idea that I left my marriage based on some hysterical rendezvous — that, to be crystal-clear, never happened — rather than having taken over a year to do the most soul crushing work of my life? Rather than realizing I had to be the most vulnerable I've ever been, on a public stage, despite being terrified to my core? It feels brutal."

Elsewhere in the essay, Bush said that while she sort of hates the notion of having to come out in 2024, she is acutely aware that "we are having this conversation in a year when we're seeing the most aggressive attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in modern history."

"There were more than 500 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills proposed in state legislatures in 2023, so for that reason I want to give the act of coming out the respect and honor it deserves. I've experienced so much safety, respect, and love in the queer community, as an ally all of my life, that, as I came into myself, I already felt it was my home."

As for a label, Bush said her sexuality exists on a spectrum and believes the word that best defines her at the moment is "queer."

"I can't say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great," she wrote.
