Leadership Essay for Chevening Example 1

With a background in psychology, I am excited to apply for the MA in Interpreting and Translation in the UK, with a focus on the Spanish-English-French language path. I’d appreciate your feedback on my leadership essay and the others that I will be submitting. I firmly believe that leadership is a multifaceted concept, varying significantly from one person to another. In light of this, I would like to highlight my unique leadership experiences, particularly during my tenure at Navistar International.

At Navistar International, I was the first psychologist to be hired, and I quickly realized the absence of any mental health campaigns within the company. Seizing the opportunity, I developed a comprehensive mental health program, concentrating on stress inoculation. I chose this focus because I noticed many employees grappling with long hours and difficulties during their shifts. Designed to span four weeks, the program’s content was both easily comprehensible and pragmatic for the employees.

The program also extended a psychological assistance service to those in need. I meticulously wrote and devised this program with the aim of institutionalizing it as an ongoing mental health initiative for the company, thereby contributing to the prevention of mental disorders. I am pleased to share that the project was successfully incorporated into the company’s annual medical care campaigns.

I also demonstrated leadership while overseeing a university project in 2017, having been selected as the former representative. I was tasked with creating a health initiative for a vulnerable community in my hometown of Victoria. I led a team of eight students from the school year below mine and one from my own school year.

Navigating this project was challenging, particularly in delegating tasks in alignment with the individual knowledge and capabilities of each team member. With the more senior classmates, I elucidated the project’s structure and the psychological approach we would adopt to foster life skills such as problem-solving, assertive family communication, and knowledge about government facilities offering healthcare services, which many community members were unaware of.

Working closely with my peers Carlos and Patricia, we thoroughly reviewed the project structure and sponsorships. After successfully presenting the project to a jury, I am proud to share that we received a first-place award. As a token of recognition, we were each awarded an extra point in our semester grades, and the project was implemented, benefiting a community of nearly seventy people.

Lastly, I am honored to have had an article published in the psychology journal ‘Psychology and Health’ from Universidad Veracruzana. Driven by a desire to contribute to science, I researched journals interested in the topic, ultimately finding a suitable platform. Over the course of six months, my work was reviewed and accepted, thanks to the invaluable support of my teachers, Miss Báez and Miss Torres. The article was officially published in January 2020 and is available on both the journal platform and my Google Scholar profile.

In conclusion, my leadership strengths are rooted in observation, empathy, and a keen ability to discern people’s needs, strengths, and abilities. I excel in the design and organization of projects that promote well-being, community engagement, and effective communication. With a passion for languages and an MA in Interpreting and Translation, I am eager to leverage these strengths to make an impact in the linguistic field.

“Leadership and influence” Chevening Essay Example 2

It is increasingly becoming a well-known fact that ‘influence is the new currency for success’. This is especially true in this new social media era, where several careers have taken off on the strength of social media influence alone, and several political careers have been elevated through the power and ubiquity of social media. Former American President Barack Obama, who used the Internet to orchestrate an unprecedented political campaign mainly using social media, is a prime example. I am well aware that influence and leadership are intertwined, where one cannot exist without the other. Amassing influence is, therefore, the surest way of achieving one’s leadership goals because people can only be motivated to follow a person with some influence. With this knowledge in mind, I have endeavored to build my influence over the years to become a leader within my profession and community. This has seen me take on various leadership responsibilities in school, work, and community.

In high school, I held two primary leadership responsibilities— I was both the Head Girl and Netball Captain at Kereri Girls High School. Being a Head Girl is the highest leadership position one can attain as a secondary school student, and as you can well imagine, it came to a lot of weighty responsibilities. I was the overall leader of all prefects in the school and had to carefully use my influence to guide them towards exercising thoughtful and balanced leadership over the rest of the students. As the Netball Captain, I had to motivate my teammates to succeed in the various national and provincial competitions in which we would participate. Even at the university, I found myself in a leadership role where I was tasked with heading the Fourth Year University Project Group.

Professionally, I have consistently exercised my leadership skills throughout my career. As the Branch Operations Supervisor at NIC Bank, I oversaw teller operations, back office, and customer service operations and guided staff accordingly. I recognized my leadership capabilities and was rewarded with the ‘NIC Bank Branch Forex Champion’ award. These leadership roles have continued as I progress in my career at NIC and currently chair the NIC Securities Limited Welfare Committee. Within the community, however, I have most enjoyed exerting my influence as a leader because it has helped me contribute to society’s betterment in my little way. I am a Mentor at Nyabururu Girls High School, Kereri Girls High School, and the Equity Bank Wings to Fly Program. As a mentor, I have been able to guide young people in terms of professional and academic mentoring and financial support, especially concerning sanitary towels and other school items. In addition, I currently work with the Uthiru Area Chief to support disadvantaged families by donating clothes, food, and some financial support.

Chevening Essay Example 3

“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it”. (Dwight D. Eisenhower)

Coming from Jordanian-Palestinian Family taught me about Eisenhower’s definition of leadership throughout my personal, academic, and professional life. External political and economic forces drove my father’s Palestinian family to move to Jordan, Lebanon, then settle in Syria. In 2015, the carpet-bombing of Aleppo forced me to leave for Turkey without a firm grasp on my future.

From the Voluntary experience I gained from working in the Red Crescent and my University Degree in Economics, I have worked as a humanitarian for the UN, trying to assist crisis-affected communities with economic empowerment and development. I have used my leadership skills to assist others who believe in recovery and resilience to commit to the exact humanitarian cause. I helped coordinate and manage the first pilot project for economic recovery in northern Syria at UN-IOM Turkey. Using my communication and administrative skills, I monitor and oversee the implementation of IOM’s programs in Turkey through our partners remotely daily. My leadership skills have been crystalized through the effective management of this project by allowing the partner flexibility to implement the activities and getting feedback on the results.

chevening Red Crescent and my University Degree 2024 2025

Strong leadership comes from clear communication of the task and the ability to give freedom and motivate others to thrive in implementing the objective. Moreover, I have used my communication and coordination skills to initiate change in the workplace. When the Turkish lira dropped significantly against the US dollar, and inflation rose 40%, UN local staff suddenly could not support themselves. I led discussions with colleagues suggesting writing a letter to the management expressing our needs and the aim of changing our salaries. By listening, gaining their trust, and acknowledging their fear, I convinced many local staff members to sign a letter to senior management. The letter led to a meeting with senior management to officially coordinate this issue with other UN agencies in Turkey, which later required establishing the Staff Association Committee that I was elected to lead and represent more than 150 staff in the south of Turkey.

The Chevening scholarship will allow me to receive an education that will provide me with the technical expertise and the network I will need when I return to create social change in terms of development and economic recovery not only at the community level but also in terms of policy implantation. This is a highly needed change for the current Syrian Refugee crisis and the Middle East.

Example 4: Leadership and Influence in Water Management

In the pivotal final year of my degree, I took a stand against the pressing issue of limited access to clean water in Sucre, my hometown. Recognizing the urgency, I spearheaded a groundbreaking project focused on groundwater research. Not only did I secure crucial funding from the water services company, ELAPAS, but I also orchestrated collaborations with key stakeholders across neighborhoods. My leadership role encompassed everything from research initiation and sample collection to the actualization of purification units. Through my unwavering commitment, I championed the cause of Sustainable Development Goal 6 and Water Quality Regulation NB512. The tangible impact? Seventy families now have access to safe drinking water, and a ripple effect of heightened awareness about hygiene and responsible water consumption has been set in motion.

My leadership journey didn’t stop there. As a board member of the Scientific Society of Civil Engineers Univalle-Sucre, I took the helm in coordinating all hydraulics and hydrology-related activities. The pandemic posed unique challenges, but I innovatively transitioned to virtual platforms, spotlighting critical issues like sustainable water management and the pivotal role of women in the water sector. My proactive involvement in the society culminated in co-authoring a scientific article, now published in a renowned Costa Rican journal, poised to enlighten future researchers.

Another feather in my cap was my active involvement with ABIS Chuquisaca. Here, I played a pivotal role in orchestrating the “1st Water Fair” in Sucre, offering a platform for 17 companies to showcase their expertise in the water sector. This event, which I helped bring to fruition, garnered significant attention from students, professionals, and the general public alike. Notably, I was among the elite group of eight professionals recognized during the association’s official founding act.

In essence, while my GPA might not be sky-high, my leadership trajectory speaks volumes. I’ve consistently demonstrated the ability to inspire teams, set visionary goals, and navigate through challenges with resilience and determination. I firmly believe that my proven leadership prowess and influential impact make me an ideal candidate for the Chevening scholarship. My vision is clear: to leverage this opportunity to further the development of my nation, elevate living standards, and champion sustainable water management.

Writing Chevening Leadership Essay

by Quva | Aug 21, 2019 | General | 2 comments

If you are reading this article, you have most probably progressed to the essay section in your Chevening application, and are wondering how you can sell yourself to a scholarship with one of the most rigid requirements in the world in a mere 500 words? The Leadership essay is undoubtedly the heart of your Chevening application, and it is not an exaggeration to say that it can make or break your application. So, it is important to carefully choose what you write because EVERY. WORD. COUNTS. (Literally).

Here is what the Chevening Leadership Essay question says:

Chevening is looking for people who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer

Word of advice

The first thing that you should know (and have hopefully done if you are already in the process of completing your application) before writing the essay is that a good essay cannot be written in a day or two. You cannot just think of one leadership example from your high school and structure your essay around it. It takes multiple iterations to write the perfect essay. However, there is no need to be intimidated by this fact because if you work in simple steps, you will find yourself fast on the right track, that is, illustrating your leadership potential in a convincing and authentic manner to the selection panel.

The first thing that you ought to do is to remember to not be overwhelmed by the essays of successful applicants you have read on the internet, and to not think that everyone who gets accepted to Chevening is bound to have held a high position in a big company. You should simply work on demonstrating your leadership potential from what experiences you have had in your life in an authentic and compelling manner. Remember, Chevening is looking for some indication in your essay that tells them that you have the potential to influence people in your country to bring about positive change in near future, and your essay should provide them with one. The first step towards writing the essay is to make a list of all the jobs you have held in your professional life in the past 5 years. For each job you have listed, also write your responsibilities, and the reason you are proud of that job. Any examples that you use in your essay should be recent, and not going as far back as high school. Next, prioritize. Take some time to think and eliminate the least impactful examples. Keep working till you find the ones that you feel can reflect you in the best light. Select top three examples from your life that show you in the capacity of a leader, in a scenario where you faced a problem and took charge, and went beyond your job description to solve that problem. Once you have selected your examples and figured out which leadership trait each example reflects, being with the first draft of your essay. It is important to begin your essay with one or two lines about what leadership is for you, and how do you describe it. Once you have done that, move on to answer the question of the essay with what is known as the STAR technique. It provides you with a structure for your essay and helps save words by describing your story in an efficient manner. STAR stands for S – Situation. This is a problem or a situation encountered by you. Start by briefly describing the problem, including the who, what, when, where, and how. T – Task. This is the part where you talk about your responsibilities in handling the situation you described above. Describe any challenges that encountered. A – Action. In this part, describe the steps you took to counter the situation. Be specific about any initiatives that you took as a leader to overcome the challenges you faced. Focus on your individual role in remedying the situation, and not on the team work. This will help Chevening identify you as a potential future leader, which is the purpose of this essay. R – Result. Finally talk about the results that you were able to achieve, and describe how you were able to avert the crisis using your leadership abilities. Be specific about the outcome that you were able to accomplish, and make sure that the results are realistic and believable in order to maintain the authenticity of the story. Once completed, do not forget to take one line to describe the lesson you learned from the situation you have mentioned. It will help you transition into your conclusion nicely. To conclude, briefly mention how Chevening will help you on your way to achieving your goals and becoming a leader. A few words of advice:

  • Use formal English. Don’ts and can’ts are not allowed.
  • Express your thoughts in a concise and clear manner. Do not be wordy.
  • Use words efficiently to keep your word count in check.
  • Finally, proofread. You cannot proofread your essay enough. Edit it and keep rereading it every 3-4 days. This is really important because every time you read your essay after a break, you will be able to look at it from a fresh perspective and see mistakes and identify problem areas that you could not before. Being in that frame of mind will also help you come up with better ways to write your examples or improve the existing ones.

essay on future leaders or influencers in their home countries

CHEVENING APPLICATION: LEADERSHIP ESSAY TIPS

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

You are required to list out the leadership qualities you possess as well as narrate examples of when you put those qualities into action.

Start off with what leadership means to you, leadership qualities you possess, a leader you admire and how you embody those qualities. Don’t just tell, show; paint a picture.

Highlight all your strong points. Don’t water it down. Bare out your achievements. The goal is for your essay to have a great flow, so start from your motivations to the times you exemplified yourself as a leader, the results and how you impacted the lives of others around you.

Present the facts and figures. Hammer on your strong points. I only realised that I didn’t even mention my strongest leadership examples when I was preparing for the interview. Don’t be like me in that aspect.

Mention if you have held a position of leadership in a professional context including in a voluntary organisation (e.g. a political party, university society, NGO, charity or professional association) especially in recent times.

Finally, use the STAR APPROACH

Situation- Explain a situation where you made decisions or exemplified yourself as a leader

Task- Mention the problem that needed to be solved.

Action- Exactly how did you solve that problem? What did you do to resolve the issues?

Results – Show your impact as the result of your decisions. You can use numbers and percentages to show the impact.

CASE IN POINT, my essay example:

First I mentioned that I became a community organizer in 2017 where I organized and facilitated a sensitization exercise for women at 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna aimed at arresting the rising cases of sexual violence in the community. I later organized another sensitisation program and humanitarian outreach along with a team of 3.

The success led to the inception of Women Aware of Rights, an NGO that primarily tackles cases of sexual and gender based violence.

Now let’s apply the STAR approach here:

Situation- cases of sexual and gender based violence in the community.

Task- sensitise the community on their rights and how to seek legal action.

Action- Organise a sensitisation program.

Result- NGO and its result based success story.

That about sums it up. Note: These are all my views.

Leadership and Influence Essay – Chevening Scholarship Application

  • Post author By JB English
  • Post date September 19, 2020

If you prefer a video, you can watch this YouTube video below:

Welcome back! Let’s look closely at the Leadership and Influence essay.

Another common question that I didn’t mention in the previous blog is “What kinds of awardees is Chevening looking for?” Here is their official answer:

“Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, we are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.”

I left this question to the end because this is what the essays are all about. The essays are the most important pieces of your application. That’s why I am going to focus on the essays and interview in these blog series. There are four essays in the Chevening application: Leadership and Influence, Networking, Study in the UK, and Career Plans.

In today’s post, I want to share how I answered the first essay Leadership and Influence. Here is the full instruction:

“Chevening is looking for individuals that will be  future leaders or influencers  in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.(Minimum word count: 50 words, maximum word count: 500 words)”

When answering this question, I thought of two of my best achievements where I used my leadership and influencing skills. I then used the STAR technique to write about each achievement. The STAR approach is an effective way to structure my writing. It stands for S ituation, T ask, A ction, and R esult.

In this part, I described the general situation: what it was, what year, where it happened, and what role I took.

Then, I described what I tried to achieve.

In this section, I started to describe how I used my leadership skills to achieve the goal of my project. I tried to be specific by providing vivid examples.

Here I mentioned the improvement that happened in relation to my action.

Have a look at my paragraph example below. Pay attention to the color codes as they match with the STAR description above.

“In 2014, along with my colleagues, I started XXX project, a free English program, around the YYY School, an international school focused on sustainability education. XXX project uses English as a tool to overcome the language barrier between local and international communities so we can solve environmental problems together. At the beginning of the program, I worked with eight local schools and various teachers in the area to recruit 90 motivated students to the program. I invited the selected students and their parents to the school for interviews and scheduling. To help me teach the English classes, I recruited and trained native speaker volunteers. By 2016, XXX has grown to 264 students and 6 teachers. As a result of this project, students are not only more informed about English but also about environmental issues in their community. Most importantly, they can help solve these problems .”

In addition to following the STAR structure, I believe I did three important things in this paragraph:

  • I described the project and the organization that I worked in. This is very important because we can’t assume that readers know what we are talking about.
  • I used active sentences. Active sentences are strong and show involvement of the subject (in this case “myself”)
  • I mentioned numbers to show progress. Including numbers is also an easy way to make a paragraph more vivid.

Whenever I write an essay, I always start with the contents. Then I work on the opening and draw a conclusion based on the main contents or reiterate the opening paragraph a different words. I did exactly that for this essay. I described two of my biggest achievements using STAR technique, then continued with the opening and conclusion.

Proofreading

I suggest you find a native English speaker to proofread your application before submitting. I use * Preply to find native English speaker editors that suits my need and budget. I personally worked with Christopher B. He has a Ph.D. and 17 years teaching at the university level. He is awesome!

You can take free classes with other teachers to find the right teacher for you. Even better, if you have an English native speaker friend, you can ask him/her to help.

I hope you learn something from my Leadership and Influence essay and best of luck!

Four Essay Topics

essay on future leaders or influencers in their home countries

Leadership and Influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.

It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website

This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.

Studying in the UK

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Do not duplicate your career essay in this essay, however, you can link the information. You will also be required to list the three universities you will be applying to, the name of the courses at the said universities, and why you chose the particular university.

Tip: Depending on which course you intend to study, google the top-performing universities in the said field to inform your university choice. Then ensure that the universities you would like to attend are Chevening partner universities, before finalizing your list of your three chosen universities.

Bonus: I have asked three scholars who have managed to successfully be chosen for Chevening before to assist with proofreading 3 prospective scholars essays before submission. Kindly note that these will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. This available to a total of 9 prospective scholars and no more. Only the 9 successful prospective scholars will be contacted. If you are not contacted, unfortunately, the 9 spots were already taken.

Note on the Essay

Essay prompt.

To achieve success at a young age is what most people would aspire to. However, making an impact within the organization is an equally important aspiration to me. As per today, the most substantial and satisfying leadership achievement of my life is one that isn’t a workplace accomplishment. It involved volunteering for a cause that I believe in and being able to accomplish a goal that has helped achieve organization’s goals.

My remarkable leadership development process unexpectedly started in 2011 when I had lunch with my college friends. A friend of mine shared her unforgettable exchange experience that has inspired me to join [NAME OF ORG]. After enrolling in [NAME OF ORG], [NAME OF PROJECT] Project was my first exchange experience where I was an English Language and Culture Assistant. Instead of lecturer, government staff or partner representative, my key target had transformed into international students who barely knew English. This was a defining moment for me, as I felt unprepared as a leader. “How can I develop a child whose opening greeting to me is an ignorance?” I thought. Since I always embark on a new venture with great enthusiasm, my high energy level enables me to motivate people, get along with everyone and create a fun and supportive environment. This can be projected in my method to approach students by creating a friendly get-together with ice cream served as an icebreaker. I carried out further sessions in the congenial setting of the school park and the students slowly opened up after I shared my life experiences. I was able to earn their trust by being honest yet fun.

I had to constantly remind myself reasons of this journey, which are to test my boundaries to develop as a person and make a positive impact in other people’s lives, no matter how small. Although the project was anything but easy, it was worth it when the individuals who took part in my classes came and told me that they had enjoyed and learned something new that they may use in their lives.

Personally, I progressed as a leader by tackling dynamic challenges. I was forced to step out of my comfort zone to grow and later I discovered that I had changed from a talker to a doer. Instead of complaining about how awful and unfair the world is, I learned how to act. Despite my miniscule efforts, I always remind myself that my actions have a ripple effect that can grow larger beyond my expectations. Upon my return home, I gained confidence to run for higher position in [NAME OF ORG], which was to become [NAME OF POSITION]. In my tenure, I had not only increased the number of exchange participants but also matured as a leader by learning that leading is as much about accomplishing your objective as it is about holding your team together and developing others. These profound experiences have helped me to progress in my professional career.

Review from Anggun Armia, recipient of Chevening Scholarship 2014, M.Sc. Royal Holloway University of London,

  • Saya butuh waktu untuk memahami kandidat sesungguhnya melakukan volunteering untuk siapa? Saya tidak memahami tulisan berikut: Instead of lecturer, government staff or partner representative, my key target had transformed into international students who barely knew English. This was a defining moment for me, as I felt unprepared as a leader. “How can I develop a child whose opening greeting to me is an ignorance?”
  • Saya juga kurang paham dengan kalimat berikut, mungkin dapat diperjelas lagi maksudnya. Opening greeting to me is an ignorance.

Where did I go wrong on my Chevening application? Feedback from this year’s reading committees

If you weren’t selected for the 2023-24 Chevening cohort, you may be wondering where you went wrong. Here is the top feedback our reading committees had about this year’s applicants.

If you applied for a Chevening Scholarship but weren’t successful, don’t be disheartened. In the search for our 2023-24 cohort, we received more than 70,000 applications!

The standard across the board is always incredibly high, with many candidates applying multiple times before they’re selected.

To help you submit an even stronger application when the next round of applications open in September, we’ve compiled some of the most common feedback we received from our reading committees.

  • When providing examples, follow the STAR approach. This involves clearly explaining the situation, task, action, and result.
  • When discussing personal achievements, use ‘I’ instead of ‘we’. If it was a team effort, focus specifically on what your role was within the team.
  • Write in full sentences, rather than bullet points. This is your chance to really tell a story and convince us you have what it takes to be chosen for Chevening.
  • Make sure you proofread your work. Silly spelling mistakes don’t make for a good first impression.

Now that you have the basics, let’s delve deeper with some more specific feedback for each of the four application categories.

Leadership and influence:

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries.

To score well on this criterion, take note of the following:

  • When demonstrating your leadership skills, try to draw on recent examples from your professional experience. Many applicants had a tendency to use examples from their academic experience, even as far back as their secondary school days.
  • Some applicants assumed that occupying a particular position or role was in itself sufficient to demonstrate leadership skills, often just listing the various responsibilities they have had over the years. Make sure you take it a step further and explain how you successfully gained and maintained influence and what the outcome was.
  • Many applicants were able to clearly define the concept of leadership but failed to provide examples of how they’ve exhibited it and how it links to both their study and post-study plans.

Networking:

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession.

  • Some candidates went into detail about their networking skills but didn’t actually mention any of their networks.
  • Similarly, some candidates spent time describing their ways of networking but neglected to mention what they had achieved by using their networks. Make sure you always complete the picture, paying attention to the ‘R’ (result) in STAR.
  • Don’t forget to link your answer back to Chevening. With an impressive alumni network of more than 55,000 people, you should clearly explain how you will engage with the global Chevening community to achieve your goals and effect positive change.

Studying in the UK:

If you are hoping to be chosen for Chevening, you should have a strong understanding of why you have selected your chosen courses and how they relate to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future.

  • Make sure you go into detail about all three courses in your answer, clearly explaining how they relate to both your past experience and future plans. Some candidates only focussed on one course or provided sweeping statements about all three.
  • Don’t just cut and paste from university websites and avoid reliance on university and course rankings as a reason to select a course.
  • Focus on the content of the courses you have selected (modules, assessment, etc.) and how this will help you to achieve your goals. Many candidates cited local attractions and football clubs as the rationale for why they wanted to study at a particular university, but we want you to think deeper than this.

Career plan:

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan.

  • When it comes to career planning, ambition is great, but make sure you have an achievable plan of how you’ll get there. The strongest responses included specific, measurable goals.
  • Don’t forget to think about the role the Chevening network will play in helping you to achieve your career goals. What doors will it open for you?

Applications for the 2024-25 Chevening cohort are open from 12 September to 7 November 2023. Start your application today at chevening.org/apply .

What qualities do future leaders need to meet the challenges of the 21st century?

Baptiste raymond, climate change initiatives manager, lafarge.

To me, 21st century sustainability leadership is about courage, creativity and faith in people. It is a values-based leadership.

Sustainability opportunities and challenges are so complex, both of global scale and yet deeply rooted in people's cultures and beliefs, that tomorrow's leaders will need four core qualities to achieve success:

systems thinking to identify paradigms driving change

mediation skills to facilitate knowledge sharing, ensure stakeholders' ownership and foster innovation

vision rooted in community service and ethical behaviour

decisiveness in ever changing environments with blurred boundaries

To me, 21st century leadership is about leading with the heart and to serve rather than rule.

Roberto Jiménez, senior analyst strategy development, Group CO2, Shell

Business leaders will need to be motivated by personal values, rather than just financial performance, in order to address the development issues we face. They will need to show a commitment to their beliefs over time in order to draw continued efforts from others. Spreadsheets and data analysis have sized-up the problem, and will help develop credible pathways to reducing emissions, conserving resources and protecting human rights. However, to push the sustainable development agenda forward, business leaders will need to make issues deeply personal.

Yuri Itoh, manager, Environmental Strategy Office, Hitachi

People tend to seek leaders who have a strong character, clear picture for the future, and talk fluently. They are often praised by the results. However, I think now people also care about the processes used to achieve the outcome. Therefore, future leaders for the sustainability need to have qualities that were not required in the past. These are:

enthusiasm to create a better world

strong principles whilst being flexible and realistic

sincerity and fairness

collaborate and work together

take risks and give the fruits to people

Mariano Spitale, sustainability manager, PricewaterhouseCoopers

I am optimistic about Rio+20, which will give new impetus to future leaders and will renew the agenda for sustainability for the coming decades. From my perspective, there are two key issues for a future leaders in the field of sustainable development.

One characteristic that will make a leader successful in the 21st century will be knowing how to identify and apply appropriate economic, moral and political incentives to actually incorporate sustainable development into our daily lives. I personally believe that this aspect has not been properly addressed in the past 20 years since the first summit was held in Rio.

Additionally, the world has changed substantially in the last five years. Its nerve centre is no longer just in the so-called developed countries - emerging countries have earned very significant weight globally as well. With this in mind, the next leaders must be vigilant to the challenges and opportunities for innovation that will come from companies and societies in these countries.

John Qiang Zhao, business sustainability manager, DuPont

I believe that future leaders need to lead their enterprises to define 'profit' in the context of what kind of impacts the company will have on the earth. They will understand that as a leader of a multinational company, they should better utilise their unique position to influence the behaviour of various stakeholders including governments, suppliers, customers and the general public in many countries. Working together with other far-sighted leaders, we will eventually find that mercy and leniency are imbedded into our company's profit. Also, we will set a model for many more companies to follow and thus make fundamental changes happen in the world.

Eugenia Ceballos, global procurement manager, Holcim Group Support Ltd

Bjorn Z.Ekelund classifies people into three types of colours:

Blue: concrete and practical people who search for solutions that must be useful and serve a cause. They focus on facts and accurate details and deliver precision of end results

Red: people who enjoy spending time with each other and get energy from being with others. They share feelings, show respect and are patient.

Green: people who enjoy new and untraditional ideas. They like the idea of doing things different and enjoy looking deeply into issues. They have the characteristic to look at the overall picture form different angles and offer imaginative solutions. They are ambitious with high goals.

This is a good set of qualities for future leaders to build on in order to push sustainable development forward. The next level in the sustainable development journey requires a radical change in the way we do business and in the way we act as individuals and as a group. A challenging change of culture.

Future leaders shall promote and drive this common way of thinking and acting. This can only be achieved if they are able to create innovative strategies, ones that drive a change in culture by engaging people and creating a shared need.

We need leaders that are able to build awareness and mobilise commitment, leaders that are capable of consolidating gains to produce more changes, leaders with credible plans to get there and leaders with enough energy to communicate, communicate until it hurts. Future leaders should have a good palette of blue, red and green qualities enabling them re-shape culture through engaging and mobilising people.

Shannon Sung Hee Shin, manager at Green Management Center, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu

I believe that a sustainability leader of the 21st century has to have the ability to create a meaningful context out of the existing sustainability landscape. Sustainability is a broad notion that encompasses all aspects of our lives from economic to social and environmental actions. A number of ways to promote sustainability is infinite, and this vague plethora of contents is often the source of difficulty in raising awareness and participation in the movement toward sustainable future. It is therefore important for future leaders to recognise and provide innovative, sensitive, and meaningful sustainability possibilities.

Chevening is looking for individuals - future leaders or influencers in their home countries

MOUSTAPHA 1 / -   Oct 14, 2015   #1 Please!!!! could you tell me about the terrible mistakes !!!!! Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer Growing up in the countryside where people suffer from poverty ,discrimination against women, and challenging situation of children at school pushed me to think about promoting change in the rural areas, so on one hand as a young journalist I took the initiative to cover stories about women and children in the remote areas with a contribution to various local and international news outlets I felt responsible for addressing the issues they are facing and the efforts are they making to make their lives better. As a man, I did my best to transfer their voices to the reader because I feel that the real challenge is to enlist men as allies in change. ,I was one of a few young journalist in Morocco reporting on their stories wining the regional Young Journalists Award in Souss Massa Agadir on my story "Women and cooperatives: the game changer" on the other hand I have initiated many activities regarding peace and social change in isolated villages through an youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to empower the rural community and help youth to develop their leadership potential. Located in a rural area in the southwest of Morocco, we contributed to the development of the region by implementing projects related to environment, education, poverty alleviation and sport we worked hard to enforce youth and women in decision making and spread awareness to fight against political corruption which is one of the most intractable issues facing my country, we conduct community development projects with focus on education and democratization and gender approach ,I'm also an amateur football player my experience in peace building and my athletic background together have given me a strong believe on the potential of sports to change individual behavior and transform wider conflicts.

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) To lead, is to serve. For the most part of my life, I have had the privilege to occupy and experience leadership roles. And for me, leadership is not about rank. It is about character and how you influence decisions to have a positive impact. Every situation requires leadership, it only takes an initiative to realize it. I have gained useful leadership experiences working with industrial research teams, being on teams for class presentations, holding leading roles on student boards and being an elder child in my family. My most treasured leadership experience was leading a team of five to conduct the first Animal Biotechnology research at the Faculty of Agriculture, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Being the first of its kind, this project presented several challenges but the achievements were rewarding. That research has been a land mark event at the Faculty of Agriculture. I am proud to have led the only team that finished their research project before the deadline and the only team to have presented our research findings to the Ghana Science Association. Any student board I have been a member of, I make sure I contribute to discussions. The ‘leadership package’ comes with being outspoken and a problem solver. I supervised the introduction of the paperless system when I chaired the electoral commission. As a member of the 2016/17 KNUST SRC Policy Research Team, I was influential in decision making. I am pleased to have contributed to the implementation of a bus policy that eased the transport challenges on campus. In my leadership experiences I have picked up the skill of being a good team player, a better listener, resilient and assertive. My communication skills improved as I was daily conversing and interacting with people. As a leader, to accept and work on constructive criticism is as important as any other thing. Experiencing setbacks as a leader gave me a different perspective of things. I now realize when things do not go your way, it is no reason to give up, you only must plan to do better in the next challenge. By listening to my peers and by learning from my mistakes I have overcome many obstacles. Each time I am part of a team, I encourage people to speak up by creating an atmosphere of shared problem solving. When I read about Martin Luther and the reformation, I know I must be ready to make sacrifices if I must lead. As a leader, Desmond Mpilo Tutu teaches me to be a moral example and a servant if I want to lead. The economic and social change supervised by Queen Victoria, gives me hope that I can impact the Ghanaian economy. The humanitarian achievement of Florence Nightingale inspires my dream of leaving a legacy for posterity. Each story of leadership I have read encourages me to develop myself to become a great leader.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words) The success of a team, thrives on how comfortable people are during interactions. Which also depends on the working relationship available. Allowing people to express themselves brings a lot of ideas to work with. When people realize you respect their views, they are willing to put in the efforts necessary to do a task. To build such an environment requires effective communication and tolerance. As an Agricultural Extension Officer, effective communication has been useful in my interaction with farmers. My attitude has been one that inspires farmers not to have an inferiority complex. I often visit them in their homes to pep-talk and share a meal. I have been able to build the kind of trust that makes them adopt new technologies I introduce to them. Even with the ‘late adopters’, I listen to the concerns they have and then explain the complex issues to them. By creating an atmosphere of shared ideas, we all get to the point of accepting the best alternative. When I gained admission to study at Achimota School, I joined the social clubs on campus to develop my interpersonal skills. I also stood for election as the class prefect all in the bid to develop my skills. As the class prefect, I developed the ability to speak to large crowds and people in authority. The exposure helped me overcome my anti-social attitude. My experience talking with school authorities and peer’s, taught me the importance of social networking. I learned to build positive working relationships through my interaction with the staff. Also, as an intern at the Animal Research Institute, building relationships with my superiors was a great asset. I benefited from their worth of experience and I still have some senior research scientist acting as my mentors. I still have that working relationship with the staff. In college, the habit of speaking positively was helpful in managing the teams I worked with. In a team, it is important to accept and provide support, it enhances relationship building. I leverage the support I provide to get teams to finish tasks on schedule.

In my quest to become a Chevening scholar, the skills I have learned over the years will be useful in my interactions with the team. My experience so far has made me realize, providing support, builds trust and allows people to showcase their potential. When I join the 2019 Chevening Scholars, I will create an advising environment where fellow scholars will be willing to help each other. I will do this through the creation of a social platform with fellow Chevening Scholars. As a scholar, I will show respect for all, avoid the blame game and share credits. I would help fellow scholars to unearth their abilities by encouraging the team. I will use the skills I learned in my Conflict Management course in resolving potential conflicts that may arise. I will ask fellow scholars to take time out to listen to fellow scholars, this will help us bridge the cultural and social differences.

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) I considered several factors during my college search for postgraduate study. Factors included the course content, the values of the university and the location. Another important factor, was the cost of tuition and cost of living in the University community. I wanted Universities with fees within the limits of potential sponsors and still access quality education. I chose Universities with good rankings on the Times Higher Education and the QS rating. I chose the Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), not just because it is a member of the prestigious Russell Group. Looking through the course content of the MSc. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, I realized it aligned with my career aspirations. With my background in Biotechnology, I find this course to be a buildup on my previous education. Also, QUB provides students with career guidance, academic skills and personal development. (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) Ever since the question of what contribution I can make to humanity crossed my mind, I have made it my priority to be remembered for something that humanity will treasure. My enthusiasm for research started in high school, laboratory sessions always made an impression on me, the fascinating experience of solving challenges always thrilled me. This enthusiasm led me to pursue an undergraduate degree that was dominated with lab coursework, with a research thesis being an essential determinant for the award of a degree in Agricultural Biotechnology. The knowledge acquired from my undergraduate study has been very useful in assisting farmers within the Ga West zone. My interaction with these farmers on their farms allowed me to identify surmountable challenges, and it is my dream to use the knowledge I would be acquire from my postgraduate study to solve these challenges. In the next five years, I look forward to expanding my knowledge on cellular activity, and using this knowledge to alleviate the troubles in crop and animal production. For the one year that I will be studying MSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Queen’s University, I would want to tackle two major issues; the first is developing methods to improve the feed utilization efficiency in poultry and the second is on breeding crops with enhanced nutrients that will require that when consumed in small quantity will still meet the body requirements for the specific nutrients. This, when done, will reduce the cost of feed which will in-turn reduce the cost of production; a major reason why Ghana is unable to meet the quantity demands of consumers. I look forward to starting a commercial farm and private research station whose focus will be on using biotechnological tools in the advancement of agriculture whilst looking at the environmental footprints from the activities of farming. I have already designed a business proposal and prepared research proposals to guide me in this regard. I am hopeful that after obtaining the knowledge and skills I seek through this Chevening Scholarship I will be able to accomplish my goals and be a Chevener that Chevening will boast about. I find nothing better than using my passion to assist the goal of making the world a better place; alleviating the problem of pollution and famine. Biotechnology does not only offer solution to agriculture, it tackles global energy crisis and health.
