Halloween Reading Comprehension Activities for Middle School

halloween reading assignment

Anyone who has taught middle school knows that incorporating any sort of Halloween activities into your middle school classroom can feel risky. Middle schoolers are hyper and easily excitable even before you add candy into the mix. Despite this, I’ve found that it is definitely worth it to incorporate some Halloween reading comprehension activities and worksheets in my classroom. Halloween provides excellent opportunities to focus on a variety of important standards and skills in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Halloween is a great time to work on reading comprehension by reading spooky stories.

Spooky stories and Halloween just go together. Middle schoolers are at a wonderful age to read a lot of classic stories because they’re young enough to still be excited by them, but they’re also old enough to understand the deeper meanings behind those stories. My students have loved several works by Edgar Allan Poe, including “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

Reading about the history of Halloween allows you to focus on comprehension skills for informational text.

Unlike some other holidays, many students are unfamiliar with the history of Halloween. I created a differentiated reading passage that explains the history of Halloween. The passage is written at two levels which will allow you to easily differentiate for your students. This Halloween activity also includes worksheets that focus on context clues questions, reading comprehension questions, and a writing assignment.

Halloween Reading Passage & Activities for Middle School

Your students can color while focusing on important reading comprehension skills.

I can’t count the number of times students asked me why we weren’t having a Halloween party. Testing and pacing calendars limit the number of days I can build anything just for fun into my lesson plans. That’s why I created these context clues coloring activities. Students use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words and then color in boxes to reveal a mystery image. It is a great way to stick to the standards while spicing things up.

Halloween Context Clues Color By Number

Planning for Halloween activities and worksheets in a middle school classroom can feel overwhelming, but they can also provide fun and engaging ways for students to sharpen their reading comprehension skills. The two resources I mentioned above are available in a money-saving bundle that also includes a fun text message inferencing activity.

Halloween Reading Activities for Middle Schoolers

1. halloween sentence starters & word search.

Halloween EB Academics by Caitlin and Jessica

This printable Halloween worksheet pack comes with two different activities: a Halloween word search and a sentence starting activity.

In the included writing prompts, students are tasked with creating scary stories using the beginning of a sentence from a well-known literary work. While the worksheet gives examples to choose from, you could also challenge your students to use a line from one of their favorite books. The only stipulations are that it has to be a scary story and they have to use their chosen sentence as the first sentence in their work!

Using this word search at the start of class is a great way to get the wheels turning inside a student’s head. Not only that, but word searches also help reinforce different concepts like context clues, vocabulary, and spelling.

Created and made available for free download by EB Academics by Caitlin & Jessica.

2. Create/Describe Your Own Haunted House

Halloween Rebecca Bird

One of the most important aspects of storytelling is the proper use of mood and tone. In this activity, students use these concepts to create descriptive representations of a haunted house. Before starting the activity, show your students the video and non-fiction article provided in the lesson. These will help your students visualize and get inspired.

Afterwards, you can let your students get to work creating their own spooky masterpiece. In the individual activity, the student is tasked with illustrating the interior and exterior of their haunted house. Then, they have to answer three questions about their house involving adjectives and tone, setting the mood, and describing a setting. Add an extra component to this activity by having your students swap haunted houses and write a story about the house they “visited.”

Halloween Reading Activities for High Schoolers

1. two-sentence horror stories.

Halloween It's Lit Teaching

Storytelling has been an integral part of human culture since the beginning of time, and Halloween presents the perfect opportunity to fine-tune these skills in your classroom. If you have students who struggle with details or who tend to rush through their work, this Halloween English activity is good for slowing down and thinking creatively. In this activity, students are tasked with thinking up spooky stories, but there’s a twist: they can only use two sentences.

The main goal in this type of writing is to achieve the highest amount of terror and intrigue you can without giving the ending away. Before getting started on this activity, it may be helpful to provide examples so you can keep your students on the right track. The creator of this lesson includes links to a variety of examples to read from. With such close attention being paid to each sentence, this is a perfect opportunity for a Halloween grammar lesson or vocabulary lesson.

Halloween Reading Comprehension Questions by Piqosity

Edgar Allen Poe’s eerie and mysterious writing is a staple of American horror and mystery fiction, which is why reading his work is a perfect way to celebrate Halloween! The passage below is an excerpt from one of his most succinct short stories, a frightening tale about a painting.

Piqosity’s own Sara Fetahagic has written the three comprehension questions following the passage to quiz you on your ELA skills. Each question is a bit more difficult than the previous one!

Halloween Reading Passage: Excerpt From The Oval Portrait by Edgar Allan Poe

The Oval Portrait

Reading Comprehension Questions

1. Why does the painter’s wife despise his art?

A. She believes his paintings are grotesque and displeasing. B. She views art as her rival for her husband’s attention. C. She resents his art because she wishes she could paint as well as he can. D. She thinks art is useless and unprofitable.

2. In line 67, the word “pallid” most nearly means

A. puny. B. proud. C. poor. D. pale.

3. This passage contains all of the following rhetorical devices EXCEPT

A. anaphora. B. assonance. C. parallelism. D. alliteration.

Passage Answer Key and Explanations

Lines 29-30 describe the wife as, “hating only the Art which was her rival.” Lines 25-26 characterizes the artist and his Art as, “He…having already a bride in his Art.” Therefore, “ she views art as her rival for her husband’s attention.”
The correct answer is “ pale .” The sentence is describing the artist’s horror at what he has created and how he has grown pallid. “Puny”, “proud”, and “poor” do not describe how someone might change as they are frightened. A terrified person is often described as growing “ pale.”
The correct answer is “ anaphora .” “Pallid, and aghast, and crying with a loud..” (lines 67-68) is an example of assonance. “From hour to hour” and “from day to day” (lines 39-40) is an example of parallelism. “Mighty marvel” (line 51) is an example of alliteration. There is no example of “ anaphora” , the repetition of words at the beginning of a clause or sentence, in the passage.

Halloween Lesson Plans for Middle School and High School ELA

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Wondering how to tap into your middle school and high school students' passion for Halloween while building their reading and writing skills? Here are five creepy, standards-based ideas for your secondary ELA classroom! Your students will be so engaged in LEARNING, they will forget about the distraction of Halloween and the sugar coursing through their veins!

halloween reading assignment

Five lesson ideas to engage your middle and high school ELA students this Halloween:

1. Implement an Escape Room.

Escape rooms have quickly become the most popular lesson I teach in my classroom. My students love them, and so do I! Last year, I decided to get super risky: I scheduled my formal observation on Halloween in my 7th grade classroom. My lesson: "The Tell Tale Heart" escape room .

My students read "The Tell Tale Heart" the day before the escape room. On Halloween, they walked into my dark classroom, our door covered in pictures of Edgar Allan Poe, read hearts I bought from the Dollar Store, and yellow caution tape. I played spooky music on my smart board and explained to students that the old man's heart was hidden somewhere in our classroom. It was their job as detectives to find it!

Students had to dive deep into the story, analyzing the literary elements, using context clues to unlock the meaning of vocabulary words, and assembling a plot line of the story in order to unlock clues I set up ahead of time. They were GLUED to their stories, whispering answers to their teammates in attempt to not give away answers to other groups, and best of all, they were LEARNING.

Escape rooms are perfect for Halloween. They require some upfront work (see my post on creating your own escape room here) , but it's totally worth the effort!

halloween reading assignment

2. Create poetry using the pages of a spooky story.

One of the most engaging forms of poetry is blackout poetry. To implement blackout poetry, print the pages of a scary story. Do a close read with your students, turning the lights low (I use Christmas lights and a few old lamps) and playing some creepy instrumental music for effect.

After reading, instruct your students to create their creepiest blackout poetry. Make it a Halloween challenge by giving awards (hello Halloween candy!) to the best use of repetition for effect, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, personification, most creative, etc.

Find creepy stories here:

"The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe

"The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe

"The Landlady" by Roald Dahl

"A Ghost Story" by Mark Twain

"The Mortal Immortal" by Mary Shelley

Simply print, copy, read, and choose a page for blackout poetry!

If blackout poetry isn't your thing, use any of the stories above to make found poetry. After completing a close read of the story pages you print, instruct students to highlight powerful (and creepy) words, phrases, and/or sentences. Define powerful as a class: powerful writing makes the reader think and feel. Powerful writing sticks with you! Since this is a Halloween activity, you might choose to challenge students to find the creepiest language possible.

After identifying powerful and creepy language, instruct students to choose at least ten powerful words, phrases, and sentences from the text to write their own found poem. Students can add their own words, but must use ten pieces of language from the text. Encourage students to arrange and rearrange the found language until the ideas flow and tell a story within their poem. You might choose to model this process with your own found poem.

3. Peel back the layers of a poem with a Poetry Autopsy.

Make poetry analysis a hands-on, Halloween-themed activity with Poetry Autopsies . For a poetry autopsy, print copies of any creepy poem (Edgar Allan Poe is our favorite; you can check out his poems here ). Staple a blank paper to the top. Instruct students to cut out the center section so the poem is revealed through the top (see picture). Students will paraphrase the poem on the top layer. I created the top layer of our poetry autopsy on the computer and added specific questions. You can check out the full activity here .

halloween reading assignment

On the bottom layer, instruct students to identify different types of figurative language by color coding them with highlighter. For every highlighted element, instruct students to explain how the language adds to the overall meaning of the poem.

For example, highlight personification in green, metaphors in yellow, similes in pink, alliteration in green, assonance in blue, repetition in orange. In addition, instruct students to identify the shift in the poem, the place where the mood or topic suddenly shifts to reveal and deeper meaning.

For extra fun, students can decorate their poetry autopsies with scars and fun Halloween colors.

halloween reading assignment

4. Complete a Character Autopsy.

halloween reading assignment

Analysis is challenging for middle school and some high school students. It requires higher level thinking, and some students struggle to peel back the layers of a text to see what's underneath. In a character autopsy, students are quite literally peeling back the layers.

To implement a character autopsy , instruct each student or group to choose one character. On poster paper, trace an outline of the character's body. I draw these ahead of time to save class time, but students can easily create their own character bodies OR trace a group member for even more fun!

Next, tell students to do an autopsy by examining what is in the character's brain, heart, eyes (their perspective of the world), hands (what do they hold dear to them), feet (where have they walked and how has that affected them), and belly (what is in their gut?). Require that students include a description in their own words AND back up their autopsy results using text based details.

Optional: set the scene in your classroom by covering tables with blue or gray plastic table cloths from the Dollar Store. Give students googles--I borrowed some from our tech teacher. Provide lab coats--I borrowed these from the Science department. Give students gloves (avoid latex for allergic students--I bought latex free gloves at my local grocery store for $5 in the cleaning supply section).

You might also choose to use caution tape, spooky music, and dim lighting to set the scene.

Check out my Character Autopsy for any novel here .

halloween reading assignment

5. Find the creepiest strange but true facts from short stories or independent reading novels.

Halloween is all about being spooky and strange. Hand out the Strange but True facts worksheet from The Best Ever Reading Response activities. Instruct students to find the strangest facts from their independent reading novels OR from a scary short story (print one of the stories listed above) to display creatively on the worksheet.

halloween reading assignment

Students must prove that each fact is strange but trued by supporting their ideas with text based evidence. Challenge students by asking them to analyze how different elements interact to make things even more strange in their novel (ex. how does the author's word choice affect the mood? How does the setting impact the characters?).

End class by turning off the lights and asking students to share their strange but true facts. Hand students a flashlight to hold at their chin and shine on their face as they share for added creep factor!

Halloween doesn't have to be a day that teachers dread. Engage your students in meaningful, fun learning. Embrace students' extra energy with the activities listed above! Did you try one of these activities in your classroom? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. Happy Halloween!

Celebrate Halloween!

Celebrate Halloween!

Event Description

In the United States, Halloween is celebrated on October 31. The holiday has its roots in the pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain. It was Christianized in the 9th century as "All Hallows' Eve," which precedes the Roman Catholic celebration of All Saints' Day on November 1.

Classroom Activity

  • If you have Internet access in your class or school, assign one common aspect of Halloween (e.g., costumes, pumpkins, witches) to a group of students and ask them to search for information about how that aspect came to be a part of Halloween tradition.
  • Have students make a list of the characters from a text that they are currently reading (or from texts read earlier in the year). Ask students to create masks or costumes that represent one of the characters from the text. Each student could then be asked to deliver a short monologue as that character to a small group.
  • Ask students to write a narrative describing their best Halloween ever, an expository essay that tells how to plan a Halloween celebration, or a spooky Halloween mystery story. They can plan the last one using the interactive Mystery Cube tool. Helpful information can be found on the Mystery Cube page.

This online magazine is a great place to research the history of Halloween and includes a link for teachers to find a few classroom activities.

Elementary students in the United States and Canada share their language arts activities in this collaborative Internet project about autumn. Students can view the work and use it as a model for their own projects. Don't miss the Haunted House showcased in Mrs. Silverman and Miss Sowa's class .

This page from KidsReads.com provides an annotated list of books about Halloween.

This page from the Library of Congress American Memory website features primary documents related to Halloween, including interviews, folk tales, and audio files. Some highlights include images of magician Harry Houdini, first-hand accounts of Halloween tricks of the past, and spooky songs.

What Teachers Are Saying About These Halloween Activities:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My kids had so much fun with these. I had parents commenting that their child enjoyed them so much they couldn't get them to stop and go to bed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am obsessed with your resources! Another great bundle ! Thank you!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I teach multiple grade levels, and this collection had an activity for each one! Each student had fun while learning on Halloween this year! Thank you.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I used several of these activities with my students, and they enjoyed them . It is an easy 'go-to' activity during a very busy time of year.

What's Included in The Halloween Activities Bundle:

➡️ Halloween Around the World: Teach your students about how Halloween is celebrated around the world with traditions, practices, and customs from different countries with this ready-to-use resource! The countries covered are Ireland, Mexico, Romania, Nigeria, and China. This fun and engaging resource is an excellent cross-curricular activity that connects well with social studies and exposes students to other cultures many of them may not be familiar with. Each of the texts has a reading response that asks students comprehension questions regarding the piece.

➡️ Halloween Figurative Language: Bring Halloween into your middle and high school English class while also teaching common figurative language and literary devices used in poetry or fiction. This ready-to-use figurative language assignment includes a variety of Halloween-themed sentences that incorporate an example of metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, oxymoron, or onomatopoeia! An answer key is provided to easily grade or review the assignments with students!

➡️ An Interview With An Alien: This Halloween writing assignment has students play the role of a government worker who must conduct an interview with a newly landed alien. Students must transcribe their "conversation" interview style, being sure to create questions that focus on "who, what, where, when, and why". There is also a section on the handout where students can brainstorm their questions.

➡️ Zombie Survival Manual : This Halloween writing assignment has students take on the role of a leading expert on zombies. With a zombie virus on the rise, they have been tasked with creating a zombie survival guide for the people of Earth. Students must complete a written plan for the manual, which will include 5 different sections: abilities and behavioral patterns of zombies, weapons and fighting techniques, safe places & zombie proofing, essential items and what to do in the event of a bite This Halloween activity is perfect for students to embrace the Halloween spirit, be creative, and practice their writing skills too.

➡️ Superstitions Reading Comprehension: This ready-to-use Halloween resource will engage even your most reluctant readers. Students will read four high-interest nonfiction texts about widely-held superstitions including the number 13, black cats crossing your path, walking under ladders, and breaking a mirror. Students will show their comprehension with these Halloween reading comprehension texts through the included assignments with questions about the reading.

➡️ The Scream Artistic Writing : Unlock your students' creativity with this Halloween-themed writing activity inspired by Edvard Munch's masterpiece, "The Scream." ➡️ Halloween Mystery Writing: Have students write a spooky narrative with this Halloween-themed writing assignment where students develop their own mystery narrative. This comprehensive resource provides all the necessary support, including a detailed presentation to guide the lesson, graphic organizers for the plot, character development, setting, conflict, and more, as well as dedicated pages for the final draft. Get ready to immerse your students in a world of suspense and intrigue with this engaging Halloween writing activity!

➡️ Halloween Narrative Story-Maker Activity: Use this entertaining and creative resource to engage your students in writing a Halloween narrative piece. Students will choose from a variety of character traits, settings, and types of conflict cards to create a unique Halloween narrative. It's a mix-and-match writing activity with a holiday twist that both entertains and allows students to practice important writing skills and work with different narrative elements.

➡️ Character Halloween Costume : Get into the Halloween spirit in your middle school English class with this engaging character analysis assignment suitable for any novel or short story. In this assignment, students will channel their understanding of characterization and theme by choosing and designing an original Halloween costume for a character from their novel or short story. Students will be required to show a deep understanding of characterization or themes that develop in the novel as the costume must relate to the text.

➡️ Character Pumpkin Carving : Ditch the traditional character analysis and try this fun alternative instead. Students will read any short story or novel and carve two Halloween pumpkins to represent two characters from their reading. With each carving serving as a symbolic representation, students will showcase their understanding of the characters' personality traits as well as the plot and themes of the short story or novel.

ESL Halloween Reading Comprehension

The following ESL Halloween reading comprehension will help you remember the Halloween vocabulary, as the best way to learn anything is by using it. You will have to use the vocabulary you have learnt to read the following passage and then answer the questions.

This ESL Halloween reading comprehension passage and exercise will help you learn all about Halloween.

The reading passage on this page is all about Halloween and the most common traditions that people follow when celebrating that day. Once you have read the passage you should look at the 5 questions that follow it and chose the best option (A-D) to answer each one.

If you need any help with the vocabulary when reading the ESL Halloween Reading Comprehension passage you can look at the ESL Halloween vocabulary page.

ESL Halloween Reading Comprehension Passage

Halloween is a celebration that happens on the 31st of October. It originally came from a Christian religious day. The 1st of November is All Saints Day, so Halloween is the eve or night before this. Nowadays it is mainly just an excuse for people to have fun.

The holiday was mainly celebrated in America and from there has spread to many other countries. It is meant to be the day, and mainly the night, when monsters come out of hiding. This means that people associate scary and frightening things with Halloween.

There are three main traditions linked to Halloween. The first is carving pumpkins, the second is decorating your house and the third is trick-or-treating.

Pumpkins are big vegetables that go an orange color when they are ripe and ready to eat. When someone carves a pumpkin they cut the top off it and scoop out all the seeds and flesh from the inside. Then they carve a pattern into the outside of the pumpkin. Often they cut the pattern so that there are holes into the center of the pumpkin. It is traditional to carve your pumpkin into a scary face. Then when it is dark you put a candle or light inside the pumpkin so the light shines out of the frightening face that was carved.

Then the pumpkins would be used to decorate your house. You would put them in a window or on the front porch so people in the street can see them. However, the decorations have become much better over the years. Now people try to make their houses look as if they are a haunted house by making skeletons to hang in the garden or putting tombstones outside the house. They might also make it look as if there are lots of spider webs. The people from the house try to make it look as scary as possible.

Finally, children will get dressed up in costumes and go out trick-or-treating. This is where they go to people’s houses and ask for sweets or candy, their treat. If the house refused to give them anything then they would play a trick on the house. Adults do not go trick-or-treating, unless that are looking after children, but do often have their own parties at night. At these parties people would also be dressed up as monsters or anything else that is scary.

The Best Nails From the 2024 Met Gala Red Carpet

Diamonds (and 3D flowers) are a girl’s best friend.

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

As usual, there were plenty of classic nudes and French tips that made an appearance at the bash, but there was also a wealth of creativity that inspired us to redo our nail Pinterest boards for the rest of spring. One particular trend that caught our eye was 3D floral nails , like the red and pink flowers adorning Dove Cameron’s mani. Plenty of glitz and glam was present, too: Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Taraji P. Henson’s nail moments featured gemstone-like charms that sparkled under the lights and camera flashes. Meanwhile, Cardi stuck to her roots with towering stiletto claws.

Ahead, click through the best nails we saw at the 2024 Met Gala—they’ll take your breath away and have you scheduling your next nail appointment ASAP.

gigi hadid met gala 2024 nailboo nails

Belle from Beauty and the Beast would’ve loved Gigi's garden nails. Manicurist Mei Kawajiri composed a classic, spring-fresh nail with Nailboo’s Nail-Flex & Chill and Here’s A Tip before hand-sculpting the mesmerizing yellow roses on top. “This mix of playful and classic is just like Gigi. We wanted the nail looks to be a continuation of her Met Gala look designed by Thom Browne,” Kawajiri said in a press release. Truly a manicure fit for a princess.

Taraji P. Henson

new york, new york may 06 taraji p henson attends the 2024 met gala celebrating sleeping beauties reawakening fashion at the metropolitan museum of art on may 06, 2024 in new york city photo by mike coppolamg24getty images for the met museumvogue

Taraji P. Henson knows how to accessorize and make a statement. Her nails, encrusted with flowers and gemstones, seemed more like an extension of her jewelry than a manicure.

Cynthia Erivo

Natural elements like dried beetles, rose petals, and succulents, along with flakes of gold, adorned Cynthia Erivo’s nails. Layers of OPI GelColor Stay Strong Base Coat , GelColor in Midnight Snacc , and GelColor in Bubble Bath held the decorations in place, like amber encasing fossilized bugs.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s sweeping denim gown stole the show, but her bejeweled blue nails deserved a closer look, too.

Allison Williams

Press-on nails have come a long way since the bulky, ill-fitting offerings of our youth, and believe it or not, Allison Williams was sporting a set of imPRESS No Glue Manicures in Vanilla Glazed on the red carpet. “After seeing a swatch of Allison’s gown, I knew I wanted to create a design that would flow across her hand. Following the floral pattern in her gown, I created a cascading rosette design with vines that connected from nail to nail. Allison fell in love with them the moment she saw them!” said celebrity manicurist Pattie Yankee in a press release.

Ayo Edebiri

Loewe dressed Ayo Edebiri, and Après Nails’ First Glance , Aquarius Rising , and Be-Leaf In Me dressed her nails. Her manicurist, Eri Ishizu, then built the 3D flowers with Top Gelcoat X and supplemented them with pearls, studs, and actual dried blooms.

Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter was feeling blue on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet. “The black and blue fairytale gown she wore is so elegant and classic. To complement the look, I used OPI It’s a Boy! with Chrome Effects in Tin Man Can and adorned the nails with rhinestones,” celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt shared via press release.

Dove Cameron

Manicurist Melanie Shengaris made sure that each of the floral charms on Dove Cameron’s nails matched the actress and singer’s gown. Aprés Nails Dear Diary provided the milky pink base.

All that glitters is not gold, but Mona Patel’s nails sure were. The gilded look matched the gold details on the rest of her ethereal ensemble.

Quannah Chasinghorse

Hailey Bieber kicked off the glazed donut nail trend at the 2022 Met Gala, and Quannah Chasinghorse put her own twist on it this year by adding tiny hand-painted blooms on her fourth fingers.

Cardi B’s nail artist, Coca Michelle, took structured manicures to a whole other level. Fun fact: The three-dimensional nails took more than 20 hours to construct. “I went with a simple design to give the color and structure of the nail a moment and an elevated look of a thorn on a rose stem,” Michelle said in a press release. While OPI shades Spice Up Your Life and Samoan Sand provided the neutral base, a combination of Is That a Spear in Your Pocket? And AmazON…AmazOFF was responsible for the deep green tips.

Keke Palmer

Bling was the name of the game for Keke Palmer on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet. Tiny gems studded the actress’s nude stiletto manicure.
