Maiti Nepal

Maiti Nepal was officially founded as a non-profit organization in 1993 to combat human trafficking and protect Nepali girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, child prostitution, child labor and various other forms of violence and exploitation. Maiti Nepal has today grown in national and international prominence with its relentless social activism and on-going rescue efforts. Maiti Nepal’s main focus has always been centered on preventing trafficking for prostitution, rescuing victims of the flesh trade and rehabilitating them. This organization also actively works to provide justice for the victimized girls and women through criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals. It provides shelter, essential diet, medical care, counselling, therapy and end-of-life care to a vulnerable population, who have been neglected and shunned by the society.

maiti nepal essay in nepali language

Maiti Nepal stepped into its 25th year on April 6 on their mission to prevent human trafficking. On the occasion, they celebrated the silver jubilee at the auditorium of Army Officer’s Club, Sundhara as they hosted a cultural and felicitation programme with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and others in attendance. The event had the children of Maiti Nepal danced in elan onstage to various national songs and performed songs as the audience enjoyed the entertainment.

The children welcomed the audience with an orchestral performances — playing musical instruments like violin, maadal, guitar, flute and keyboard, they orchestrated the melodies of Baajho Khetma, Jham Jham Istakot as well as the classic song Yeh Kanchha. The audience was amazed at the talent of the children and their performances which was evident through the applause and cheers.

The children also danced to national songs Hatne Hoina, Nepali Nepal Ko Maya Chha Ki Chhaina among others that evoked emotions in the audience as the dances performed reflected the tradition and culture of the people living in different regions in the country. Their colourful dresses with prints of rhododendron on the back of their bhotos, blue trousers and red bhotos with the prints of sun and moon were able to reflect nationality.

After watching the performances, PM Dahal shared that he was “very much impressed by the performances”. He also expressed a few good words for Maiti Nepal and their work on their 25th anniversary.

“Maiti Nepal has been an exemplary organisation. The issues of human trafficking are important and are complicated — the work done by Maiti Nepal proves that a non-governmental organisation can work efficiently if one dedicates him/herself and puts efforts into it,” PM Dahal added while vouching his visit to the centre and help from the government level.

People and organisations who have helped Maiti Nepal reach where they are now were felicitated during the ceremony. Employees who have served the organisation for more than 20 years were also feted.

Founder of Maiti Nepal Anuradha Koirala simply expressed her gratitude to everyone who had made 25 years possible. And Executive Director of Maiti Nepal Bishwo Ram Khadka called for willingness and commitment from the government in their mission to stop human trafficking.

“Maiti Nepal has rescued more than 36,000 women and children from where they were sold to, while our rehabilitation services have been rendered to 25,320 women and children. Meanwhile 1,400 women and children have been provided with formal education,” Khadka shared about their untiring efforts adding, “Efforts of government and non-governmental organisations are not sufficient, political willingness and commitment is equally important to end human trafficking.”

A documentary highlighting Maiti Nepal’s journey and its efforts to address issues related to children and women was also screened during the celebration.

Anuradha Koirala

Maiti nepal’s founder, director and guiding force..

Ms. Anuradha Koirala is the Founder and Executive Director of Maiti Nepal. Born in Nepal and former English teacher, Ms. Koirala started Maiti Nepal in a small house in Kathmandu with her own savings. Today she is a widely recognized activist and lecturer who has dedicated her life to combating the sexual exploitation of women and children.

Her accomplishments have been  recognized through numerous awards . Her work is often dangerous and requires great personal sacrifice. The criminal elements that “deliver” young girls are a ruthless enemy and have political connections at the highest levels in India and Nepal. Maiti Nepal’s main office in Kathmandu has been destroyed twice and Maiti workers must travel with a bodyguard when overseeing rescue missions in India.

Her commitment has been an inspiration to her largely volunteer staff. Most of the workers are rescued girls and young women who are healthy enough to work. “They need little incentive from me,” states Ms Koirala. “They are working to help their sisters and they know the horror of the victims.” She adds, “Society rejects me and my girls, but they are the most important thing in my life.”

Maitidevi Temple

Screenshot 1

Maitidevi Temple is famous and is a highly revered Devi temple located in Maiti Devi of Kathmandu valley. It is said that offering water to Maitidevi before worshipping Manakamana Devi temple in Gorkha ensures fulfillment of the pilgrim’s wish. The place name, Maitidevi is derived from the name of the temple. According to belief, the temple was built after a divine peacock appeared here and turned everything it touched into gold. Inscriptions and idols from the Lichchhavi era found in the temple help date it to that period, although the site of the temple is also home to ruins from the medieval era. The present structure of the temple was built by Chandra Shumsher (Rana Prime Minister) in the 20th century whereas earlier structure is said to have been built by Amshu Verma during the Lichhavi period in the 7th century.

maiti nepal essay in nepali language

The temple of Maitidevi can be reached going west from Old Baneshwor and turning right before approaching Dillibazaar. The temple premises also contains the Mayur Kunda, the Brahmanala and a cemetery beside temple building and is considered as an extremely popular site with hundreds of visitor every day. Tantric rituals are also performed in the temple premises during special occasions. During the Teej festival, therefore, married women pay obeisance to the goddess and gather at the temple to dance and sing.

However, the name of the temple was derived from ‘Maiti’ which means parental home and ‘Devi’ means goddess and is believed to be very powerful and parental home of all goddesses (Devis).

KANCHANPUR, July 9: As many as six women were rescued while heading to India via the western transit route at Gaddhachouki from a suspected human trafficking racket on Saturday. The rescue operation was carried out jointly by Maiti Nepal Kanchanpur and the police. Three women from Dhading, two from Myagdi and one from Kathmandu were allegedly headed for Kuwait and Iraq via India, Maiti Nepal Kanchanpur Coordinator Maheshwori Bhatta said. "They were heading towards India on a jeep with Indian registration number plate, so we rescued them from possible danger," she said. The rescued women's ages range from 20 to 30 years. The police have detained Mai Bahadur Tamang, 50, who was escorting the women to New Delhi, the capital of India. The police have launched further investigation into the case.
