Case Studies and Portfolio Entries

You need to complete case studies or a portfolio in your programme at the national school of aesthetics.

Case studies indicate your understanding and critical thinking regarding treatments you are delivering, and documents this for us to assess if you are studying the New Zealand Certificate and Diploma in Beauty Therapy . Portfolio entries not only show the same information case studies do but also documents additional hours you complete outside of your programme at The National School of Aesthetics if you are studying the New Zealand Certificate in Nail Technology .

General Information about Case Studies and Portfolio Entries

Case studies.

A case study is written documentation of work you have carried out on a client. A case study should reflect your competence in and knowledge of the subject. Case studies are a requirement of the New Zealand Certificate and Diploma in Beauty Therapy programme .

We will give you case studies to complete throughout your time training with us. You will need to complete all of them fully and successfully to pass your programme.

These assignments are compulsory.

Case studies are:

• required assessments that count towards your overall grade

You must achieve:

• 60% overall in case studies with a minimum pass of 60% in each case study

All case studies must be handed in to a passable standard in order to qualify.

All work must be your own work. You will need to think critically about the treatment you are giving and report back on all steps of your work with your model. Some case studies and all portfolio entries require photographic evidence of your work.

Case studies of a poor standard will be returned to you, and you will need to redo those case studies and hand them in again. You only have one opportunity to do this. See the Rules and Regulations for more information.

ITEC now calls case studies  evidence of treatments . These are still, in essence, the same thing.

• These are completed under the guidance of your tutors, who will monitor the quality of your written work.
• Each case study should take 3-5 hours work: practical and written. Some can be started in class and then completed at home, but for the majority should be completed outside of class.
• Certain treatment assignments are due at various times of the year. See the  Case Studies Due Dates  for your due dates during the course.

Portfolio Entries

A portfolio entry is both a written documentation and photographic evidence of work you have carried out on a client. A portfolio entry should reflect your competence in and knowledge of the subject. Portfolio entries are a requirement of the New Zealand Certificate in Nail Technology programme .

Portfolio entries are:

• 60% overall in portfolios with a minimum pass of 60% in each portfolio entry

All portfolio entries must be handed in to a passable standard in order to qualify.

You must complete your case studies / portfolio entries and turn them in on time.

You cannot pass your programme without completing all of your case studies / portfolio entries.

All case studies / portfolio entries are compulsory to pass.

You must turn them in to a passable standard.

Our case study forms only work properly in current offline versions of Microsoft Word.

If you are a current student and need non-macro versions to work with Google Docs or another programme, please see Scott.

Instructions on How to Use Case Study Forms

• When you open any of the Microsoft Word (.docx) files, it will tell you it is in protected view.
• Click “Enable editing” to start work on the case study.
• You can alter the checkboxes and any input boxes in the document, then save it.
• It would be best to save each case study with a different, memorable name, like “manicure-client-suzie-smith-18-02-2024.docx”.

Failing Case Studies or Portfolio

If you do not pass one or more case study or portfolio entry, you cannot pass your programme.

You will need to see the head of your department to talk about how to rectify this.

Her skin doesn’t really have wrinkles or blemishes and looks and feels soft and smooth. Her T zone is little bit oily and she said that she gets blemishes prior period sometimes on this part of the face. I can see signs of heeled blemishes there and she also has a few small moles on her face.

Naomi came to see me for Fashion show makeup; she is taking part in Limericks Shopping festival Fashion show. I have to match her makeup to her outfit, which is white with bright pink accessories. Naomi brought a few pictures of makeup ideas, how she is imaging her look. We also discussed about the colours and makeup styles prior starting.

Using cotton buds I covered few little red marks of heeled blemishes with Catrice green colour corrective cream. Then I decanted some Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation in ivory and soft beige colour and mixed them together to get the right colour to match Naomi’s skin tone. This foundation is a light, smooth texture and gives natural flawless finish; it also has sun protection SPF 15. I applied foundation with foundation brush and blended it well with Kabuki blending brush.

German study pavilion wins EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture 2024

The German project outshined 39 other finalists from across Europe, including a mystical garden near Lund, Sweden, a vertical school in Madrid, Spain and a floating university in Berlin.

The Study Pavilion on the campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany, designed by architects Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke, has been crowned the winner of this year's EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture . 

Revealed by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the European Commission, the German project is being rewarded for its innovative approach to sustainability and for creating a welcoming and interactive space for study, collaboration, and community gatherings. 

Düsing and Hacke, who founded their studios in 2015 and won the competition for the study centre in 2015, are the youngest winners of the EUmies Architecture Prize.

The award will be presented to the architect duo on 14 May at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, along with a €60,000 cheque.

The pavilion features an open space concept that facilitates various student activities through a flexible layout, described as a "counter-model to spaces of hierarchical knowledge transfer" by the foundation.

Another notable feature is the hybrid structure's capability to be disassembled and reassembled. Individual components can be reused in line with the "future material depot" principle, contributing to its role in the circular economy.

The building is being honoured "for its ability to challenge the constraints and imagery of sustainability" and for how "it has taken a clear architectural idea, scrutinised it, and pushed it to the limit."

Alongside the winning Study Pavilion, the Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona claimed the Emerging Architecture Prize.

Since its opening last autumn, the five-story mass timber building designed by Madrid practice SUMA Arquitectura, has been embraced by local users and was awarded the title of Best Public Library in the World 2023 by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

Recognising the threat posed by the online world to the traditional idea of a library as a space for community engagement, SUMA aimed to counter this effect with its design.

The ground floor reading spaces open onto the street, while the "ideas forum" spaces, which can be curtained off for privacy, are strategically placed to encourage engagement among local organisations or clubs. 

The basement houses meeting and theatre spaces, as well as a local radio station; sensory rooms are located on the first-floor children’s level, and at the top of the light-filled atrium, adult spaces include multimedia and "concentration" rooms, terraces, and winter gardens. 

The awards ceremony, set for 14 May 2024, will be held at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, marking the beginning of the Barcelona Architecture Weeks.
