Master's thesis

Master's thesis is the final work for Master's degree in which the student will benefit widely the skills and knowledge acquired in the Master's studies in order to solve a specific challenge. Master's thesis is one of the strongest ways to transfer to the working life after graduation.

Every year about 800 Master's thesis are done at LUT University. Most of them are commissioned by companies or other organizations.

Why to commission a Master's thesis?

For companies and other organizations the Master's thesis offers a possibility to

  • get wider challenges or tasks done through student work
  • get access to new information and apply theory to practical challenge and
  • get to know a potential future employee and recruit him/her.

What kind of topic is suitable for a Master's thesis?

Wider design, development or research topics are suitable for Master's thesis. The variety of topics is wide. However, the topic needs to be directly linked to the content of the Master's programme. Check the previous Master's thesis at LUT University at LUT Pub system.

The length of a Master's thesis is about 80-100 pages and the time reserved for it is about 6 months of work. Masters's thesis are almost without exceptions done as individual work.

The students will start their Master's thesis projects according to their own schedules all around the year. However, the strongest need for Master's thesis topics is in the beginning of the autumn and spring semesters as well as at the end of spring semester.

LUT University recommends that the student will get paid for the Master's thesis project. This can happen either by employing the student for a work relationship or giving him/her a grant for the thesis project.

You can check the salary recommendations by employee unions and grant procedures below.

  • TEK salary recommendations
  • Suomen Ekonomit pay recommendations
  • Grant through Research Foundation

LUT Career Spark subsidy covers part of the wage costs when employer offers an international student a paid Master's thesis position with employment relationship.

Other oblications

The company or other organization should

  • offer a topic suitable for the thesis and be willing to define the topic in more detail
  • actively participate in supervising the thesis project for the whole duration of the project and
  • read the final Master's thesis and give comments to it.

Naturally, the student will also need an access to all the information and material needed from the company's / organization's side to execute the thesis project.

Masters's thesis always has a designated supervisor from LUT University.

Finding a student

You can publish your Master's thesis positions to our students in an electric JobTeaser job portal. We will publish all Master's thesis positions suitable for our study fields regardless of the salary level.

Note that the students will select the Master's thesis position which interests them and at the time that suits their studies. Therefore, all offered Master's thesis projects will not be carried out. We recommend that you will pay attention to the attractiveness of your Master's thesis position, the flexibility of its schedule and the way you present it to the students. Unpaid Master's thesis positions will be applied quite rarely.

The final topic of the Master's thesis will always be defined in a meeting together with the company / organization, student and the supervising professor.

Master's thesis reports are public documents and they will be published at LUTPub database.

If required, an embargo can be set for the report for max. 2 years. After that the report will be published.

If the student makes the Master's thesis in a work relationship, the employer and the student will sign a normal contract of employment together.

In all other cases, a separate agreement will not be signed. However, the employer may agree about the confidentiality of the information directly with the student.

The professor supervising and evaluating the Master's thesis is bound by the confidentiality obligation of the work agreement. Therefore, the teachers will not sign any separate confidentiality agreements.

If the Master's thesis is done in a work relationship, the employer is responsible for providing necessary insurances for the student.

For Master's thesis projects without a work relationship, LUT University students are covered with Worker's Compensation Insurance . Liability insurance is not provided by LUT University.

More than the degree

Where to look for a thesis position?

1. Research group

You can write your thesis and conduct the research in one of the research groups at the university. The Functional Materials major has its own My Courses page that lists open positions. So do some other programs. Students can pick one of the topics and contact the professor. These are usually unpaid unless there is suitable funding in the research group. However, you can apply for funding. If you study at Aalto CHEM, you could send an application to, for example, TES or Fortum and Neste Foundation . You can also suggest your own idea to the professor. If you already work in a research group, it is much easier to just continue working there, but for joining a research group you might have to send an official e-mail with a request and attach your CV. In some programs like Design, this option is not popular.

2. Aalto Thesis

Aalto Thesis lists projects open for applications. The topics of the theses are proposed by companies and usually, the given challenge is solved in a team of 2-4 students from different backgrounds. This year, Valmet, a company working in the pulp, paper, and energy industries field, offered two topics. One of the projects is still looking for applicants!

Many companies in Finland and abroad offer paid thesis positions. However, you have to keep in mind the intellectual property rights as you might not be allowed to publish all results from your experiments. This can complicate your graduation and the final grade of your work might be lower than it would be in other cases. You can also combine such a thesis position with work at the university in one of the research groups. It is also possible to conduct summer research in some companies and submit the thesis after 3 months only. One big advantage is that there is a possibility that you would be offered by the company a permanent job after graduation. To find a thesis position in a company in Finland, you can take a look at Aalto Job Teaser.

4. Another university

It is possible to contact a research group from another university. Aalto offers some financial support for students to cover transportation costs and some of the living expenses. The scholarship amounts usually to 1 500 Euros. You can also do your thesis within the Erasmus+ exchange or internship program.

Good luck with your thesis!

If you are interested in a laboratory or research group traineeship or wish to work on your thesis at the University of Helsinki, the best way to find a placement is to contact interesting units directly. See below how the process works and our tips for searching a supervisor.

On this page

Application process in short.

  • Contact your home institution's exchange coordinator or the person responsible for traineeships abroad. Ask for information on the process in your end as well as available financing.
  • Look for a suitable supervisor in Helsinki. Ask him/her to fill in an invitation letter for your exchange/visiting student application.
  • Learning agreement for studies (if you apply as an exchange student) will be signed by one of the University of Helsinki exchange specialist. The document is signed only after you have been officially accepted as an exchange student at the University of Helsinki.
  • Learning Agreement for traineeship is signed by your supervisor in Helsinki.
  • Wait for an acceptance letter . Exchange students get it about 6 weeks after the application deadline, visiting students in a few weeks.
  • Apply for housing . Exchange students are recommended to apply in Mobility Online, visiting students can see our housing instructions.
  • Take care of possible residence permit application in time.
  • Buy flight tickets only after you have received an acceptance letter.
  • Enjoy your stay in Helsinki!

Application periods, housing and all other relevant instructions can be found below or in our instructions for exchange and visiting students . Please familiarize yourself with them before contacting us with your questions.

How to get started

Your application for a traineeship/thesis placement begins with you finding a suitable supervisor for the duration of your stay in Helsinki.

You can look for possible supervisors in the University of Helsinki Research Portal  or by viewing the Faculties and units' research pages. Start the search in time! You will need to have secured yourself a supervisor at the time you apply for student status at the University of Helsinki.

Exchange students (those who apply via an existing exchange agreement) apply according to our application periods . Visiting students doing only research (including Erasmus+traineeship grant recipients) apply two months prior to the beginning of their stay the latest.

Please note that the University hospital pharmacy is not able to host international trainees.

When contacting a suitable supervisor

Many potential supervisors receive multiple requests for traineeship positions. Sometimes they have to prioritize their work and such requests go unanswered. If you don't receive an answer to your email within two weeks, it's best to write a friendly reminder where you copy your original email. If you still don't receive an answer, contact the next best option.

International Exchange Services can not help you contact the researchers, so it's very important you start this process in time. Many start as early as 6 to 12 months before their exchange/traineeship.

Some researchers have no prior experience in receiving trainees. You can send them our internal instructions for units receiving international trainees  (only accessible for those with a University of Helsinki user account).

Pay attention to the following things:

  • Write only to one person at a time. Teams and departments often discuss applications they received and if many receive the same email, it gives a bad impression. Also, emails that have several receivers tend to go unanswered since it’s common to expect someone else to answer. Unless you have other contacts, it’s a good idea to contact the group leader.
  • your motivation for seeking for the supervision of the said group/professor
  • the status you wish to gain (intern/ERASMUS trainee/thesis work etc.)
  • what you wish to get as a compensation or if you are receiving a grant from your home institution or elsewhere and wish to work unpaid
  • All except for PhD students need to ask the supervisor to give them ECTS credits for their traineeship/research work - also in the case the student does not need them for their home institution. This is a prerequisite for getting a student status (and the student discounts). Giving credits is easy for the supervisor and they find the instructions under the above mentioned link.
  • if you look for a thesis supervisor, you should present a preliminary research plan and have another supervisor already from your home institution.
  • Attach your CV to the application.

Once you have found a supervisor

In case you are applying with the Erasmus+ SMS or other exchange agreement , you will receive a student status at the University of Helsinki, if you get accepted. Please see how to apply as an exchange student

In case you will receive the Erasmus+ SMT traineeship grant , or some other grant, you have to apply for the visiting student status  in order to get a student status.

In both cases you need to get an invitation letter from your supervisor / sign a learning agreement for training. You find a template for the invitation letter in the application instructions. In addition you need to get credits (~5 ECTS/month) for your work at the University of Helsinki in order to get the students status. This is the case even if your home institution would not require credits for your traineeship. You can agree on the amount of credits and other details with your supervisor. You can order a transcript of credits at the end of your stay. Work in a research group is often evaluated as pass/fail unless otherwise agreed with the supervisor well in advance. Thesis work will appear as research work on the transcript and be recorded as thesis only at your home institution. Please note that it may not always be possible to give a grade for the traineeship as not all faculties / degree programmes have a code for traineeship evaluated on a 1 - 5 scale. It's important to check with your home institution if a supervisor's written statement on the grade is sufficient if the traineeship is recorded on a pass/fail scale on the transcript of records.

Master's thesis

Master's Thesis is a part of Master's degree in other fields than technology and Master's thesis in technology / architecture is a part of Master of Science in Technology /Architecture degree.

The aims and place of the thesis in degrees

During the studies, students gradually gain the skills they need to write the thesis. In order to graduate, you should master the learning outcomes set for your degree and thesis.

The aim of the Master’s thesis is that

  • the student is well familiar with his/her field and especially the field of his/her thesis topic
  • the student possesses the skills necessary for applying scientific knowledge and methods or the knowledge and skills required for independent and demanding artistic work
  • the student has good communication and language skills that can be applied in his/her field and other applicable fields

Students mainly complete the Master’s thesis during the second year of studying for the Master’s degree; it is part of the advanced studies in the degree programme. You must have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree or your Bachelor’s thesis must be approved before you can start working on the Master’s thesis and drawing up the supervisory plan with your supervisor.

The goals of theses based on learning outcomes. As you work on your thesis, your research skills, knowledge of the subject matter in the field, academic language and communication skills as well as your scientific debating skills are enhanced through peer learning and supervision, and via the discussion you conduct with previous research. Working on the thesis means practising independent research in accordance with good scientific practice. Your faculty or degree programme defines the form of the thesis more closely (see the section on your faculty).

The stages of the Master’s thesis are outlined below

Academic guidance and counselling.

Writing a Master’s thesis starts with participation in the thesis seminar and deciding on the topic. You will be assigned at least one supervisor – the responsible supervisor – who supports your work in matters related to the content and research process throughout the thesis process. The responsible supervisor is familiar with the assessment criteria of theses and discusses them with you. If the thesis has two supervisors – the responsible supervisor and the other supervisor – at least one must be well familiar with the topic of the thesis and both should hold degrees at least on the same level as the thesis in question. A person who is not a member of the University community may also act as a supervisor based on his/her expertise in the field.

The supervisor(s) and the student draw up a supervision plan that defines the rights, responsibilities and duties of the parties and the duration of the supervisory relationship. In the supervisory situation, a common understanding of the academic requirements of the thesis and of good scientific practice is also formed. The timing of supervision and the stages of the thesis process are also agreed upon. The supervisory plan also defines the target time of completing the thesis, which also gives an indication of the length of the supervisory relationship.

Your work process is the core of the supervision process. Supervision supports your learning process and your growth as an academic expert. You are in charge of your motivation and working and the way the thesis process advances. Faculties take care of the equal distribution of supervision work and including supervision in the teachers’ work plans.

The faculty also defines the practices applied if any changes, conflicts or problems arise in the supervisory relationship.

Theses done in pairs or groups

Doing the thesis with another student or in a group is agreed with the supervisor. If the thesis is undertaken by a pair or a group, each student must be able to demonstrate his/her share of the work because the thesis is fundamentally about practising independent scientific work. The thesis is assessed for each student individually.

Language of the thesis

The language of the thesis is either Finnish or the main language of the student’s degree programme. The supervisor of the thesis decides on the use of other languages than the ones mentioned above.

A student studying in an English-language degree programme may write his/her thesis in Finnish. However, if the student wants his/her academic record to show that he/she has earned the degree in English, it may be required that the thesis is also written in English.

If the student has not demonstrated language and communication skills in his/her field in the Bachelor’s degree, they are demonstrated in the maturity test related to the Master’s thesis. The demonstration of language skills in relation to the thesis is described in more detail in the section on the maturity test.

The thesis seminar

To support working on the thesis, a thesis seminar or other teaching and activities that aid the thesis process are organised.

In the thesis seminar, students especially gain peer supervision and peer learning skills as well as those on academic writing, information seeking and scientific debate. The seminar guides and supports working on an independent thesis and the parts it consists of, such as defining the research problem, outlining the topic, and structuring and reporting the research results. In the seminar, students also learn about the assessment criteria of the thesis. As far as possible, you should strive to complete your thesis in the seminar.

If the curriculum of the degree programme does not include a seminar on the Master’s thesis in the fields of technology, other means of supervision must ensure that students receive sufficient support for writing the thesis and learning research skills.

Adherence to good scientific practice

Learning outcomes related to good scientific practice are included in all theses. Review the guidelines on good scientific practice and consult your supervisor if you need further guidance. As part of the process of facilitating the writing process, the supervisor should ensure that you are familiar with good scientific practice and able to work accordingly.

Also remember the accessibility of the thesis.

The originality checking of a thesis

During the writing process, you may use the originality check tool found on your supervisor’s Turnitin section on Moodle. It will give you a comparative report on your text that will help you evaluate the appropriateness of your citation practices. You can always ask your thesis supervisor for advice on interpreting the comparison report.

The student and the thesis supervisor agree about the point when the thesis is ready for the official originality check and the subsequent actual assessment. You enter the text of your completed thesis in the originality checking software after which the supervisor reviews the originality report. After the supervisor has checked the originality report, you may submit the thesis for the actual assessment process.

Finding a thesis placement - Commissioned theses

You may do your Master’s thesis as a commissioned study for a principal that can be a company or another body. A thesis is a scientific study that is assessed on the basis of academic criteria and it must be completed within the target time. The supervisor and examiners at the University are responsible for the academic guidance and assessment of the thesis. The principal may appoint a contact person who may also participate in the supervision of the thesis. The principal must also be aware of the academic nature and publicity of the thesis. You, the reponsbile supervisor and the principal agree on the topic, schedule and objectives of the thesis.  Make a written agreement with the principal on any fee paid to you.

The University has drawn up a checklist for the first meeting on a commissioned thesis on issues that should be covered in the meeting.

Copyright of the thesis

Copyright issues are also related to the publicity of the thesis. The student is reponsible for the contents of the thesis and ascertaining his/her rights to it. The author of a thesis that is intended for publication must have full copyright to the thesis, including any pictorial material, tables or other material, or have the right to publish such material online.

Further information on copyright is available on the Library’s Open Access guide and on the following websites:  https://libguides.tuni.fi/opinnaytteet/julkaisuluvat_tekijanoikeus

  • ImagOA: Open science and use of images: a guide on the Aalto University website http://libguides.aalto.fi/imagoa_eng

Publicity of the thesis and processing confidential information

Under law, the thesis is a public document (1999/621). A thesis becomes public as soon as it has been approved. After a thesis has been approved, it cannot be modified in any way. Confidential information cannot be included in a thesis. Publishing the thesis or its parts elsewhere, eg as articles, does not change the publicity requirement.

If confidential information is processed in relation to the thesis, its use should be agreed with the supervisor and the possible principal in advance. The actual thesis should be written in a manner that allows publishing all of its parts. The possible confidential information should be incorporated in the appendices or background data that are not published. The separate data is not archived at the University.

Other help and support during the writing of a thesis

You are not alone with your thesis. Support is available, for example, on information searching and data management as well as writing and making progress . Support is offered by the University’s joint counselling services, Language Centre and Library and Data Service.

Maturity test

Purpose of the maturity test .

With the maturity test, the student demonstrates his/her familiarity with the field of the thesis and his/her Finnish or Swedish language skills. (Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004). See below for information on other languages.

If the student has already demonstrated his/her language skills in the Bachelor’s degree, he/she only demonstrates his/her familiarity in the field of the thesis in the maturity test.

Language of the maturity test

If Finnish or Swedish language skills are to be demonstrated in the Master’s degree studies, the language of the maturity test is defined as in the Bachelor’s degree.

If a student is not required to demonstrate his/her language skills in the Master’s degree, he/she takes the maturity test in the language of the thesis.

Form of the maturity test

In a Master’s degree, the abstract of the thesis serves as a maturity test.

Submitting the thesis for assessment

When the thesis is nearing completion, the student discusses the final stage with his/her supervisor. The student and the supervisor agree on the pre-examination of the thesis and any corrections that are still needed. After the pre-examination and the final corrections, the supervisor gives the student permission to submit the thesis for assessment. The student feeds the final version of the manuscript to the originality checking software in a manner provided by the supervisor who will check the originality report. The originality check of the thesis should be completed before the thesis is submitted for assessment.

When you submit your Master’s thesis to assessment in the publication archive Trepo you also ensure that the originality check of the thesis has been done and that your supervisor has given you permission to submit the thesis for assessment. The student also decides what kind of a publication permission he/she gives to the thesis. Note that you must be registered as present in order to submit a thesis on Trepo.

The student should let the supervisor know when the thesis can be retrieved from Trepo. The student receives a message from the Library within a few days of submitting the thesis for assessment. The assessment deadline is calculated from the date of the email sent to the supervisor.

Assessment and grade of the thesis

The responsible supervisor proposes examiners either at the start or the end of the thesis process. Use this form to make the proposal

Thesis supervision plan (Master’s thesis) and proposal of examiners

Examiners of a Master’s thesis

The supervisor(s) of the thesis may also act as the examiners of the thesis if they fulfil the requirements stipulated in the Tampere University Regulations on Degrees.  According to Section 28 “At least one of the examiners must be employed by Tampere University”. Both examiners must have completed at least a master’s-level degree."

The thesis examiners have 21 days to review the thesis after it has been submitted for evaluation.  The results on theses submitted for examination during the period from 1 June to 31 August may take longer to be published. For justified reasons, the dean may make an exception to the deadline. Such exceptions must be communicated to the students in advance.

Master’s theses are assessed with a grading scale from 0 to 5.  The grades are 1 (sufficient), 2 (satisfactory), 3 (good), 4 (very good) and 5 (excellent). Assessment criteria given by the faculties can be found at the bottom of this page.

Students will receive the examiners’ statement and grade proposal by email to their tuni.fi email address. Students will then have seven (7) days to provide a written response to the examiners’ statement. The countdown begins when the email is sent to the student. A possible written response is addressed to the student’s faculty and will be reviewed by the dean. The dean will assess whether there is reason to reconsider the grade or whether he or she will confirm the final grade based on the examiners’ statement. The dean can also appoint an additional examiner to review the thesis or bring the matter before the Faculty Council.

If a student does not provide a written response, the dean will confirm the final grade of the thesis based on the examiners’ statement. If a student is satisfied with the assessment outcome, he or she can expedite the process and the entry of the thesis on his or her academic record by immediately informing the faculty thereof by email. The procedure for providing a written response does not apply to theses counted towards the degree of Licentiate of Medicine.

A student cannot submit a new thesis to replace an already approved one.

Appealing against thesis assessment

A student dissatisfied with the assessment outcome of a master’s thesis (or equivalent) can submit a written appeal (request for rectification) to the relevant Faculty Council within 14 days of receiving the results.

An appeal can be delivered in writing or by email.

Electronic archiving and publishing of the thesis

According to a decision by the National Archives of Finland (AL/11085/07.01.01.03.02/2016) on the permanent electronic preservation of universities’ theses and Tampere University’s information control plan that is based on it, Tampere University’s Master’s theses are permanently archived. All theses are electronically archived. The Library is in charge of archiving theses and dissertations on the University’s publication database.

All theses are public and saved in the University’s publication database. According to the University’s strategic alignment on open science, all theses and dissertations are openly published unless the publisher’s conditions prevent it. All theses may be read with the Library’s computers and online if the student has granted permission to publish the thesis on the internet.

After approval, all theses are stored in the comparison database of the originality checking software.

In ILS, the applicants are evaluated based on their written applications by an external panel. Top candidates are invited to a critical thinking assignment. ILS board makes the final decisions based on scores from both written applications and the critical thinking assignment. The decisions are blinded so that external panel members do not see the scores from other members and the board members do not see the names of the applicants when making the final decisions.

ILS-specific evaluation criteria

Please note, that the research question must represent fundamental research in one or more of the scientific fields covered by ILS:

The integrative aspect of research may occur on various levels: versatile approaches to the research question, different levels of complexity (e.g. molecular, cellular, tissue level), or diversity of methodology used.

STEP 1: Written applications

External panel will use the following criteria when evaluating the written applications:

  • Fit to the program (PASS/FAIL)
  • Success in previous studies and/or research merits (weight: 40%)
  • Feasibility and quality of research plan and its scientific significance; integrative aspect of the proposed research project (the integrative aspect of research may occur on various levels: versatile approaches to the research question, different levels of complexity (e.g. molecular, cellular, tissue level), or diversity of methodology used) (weight: 40%)
  • Motivation and potential of the applicant to develop into an independent researcher (weight: 10%)
  • Quality of the research environment and supervision arrangements (weight: 10%)

If the applicant’s supervisor has completed supervision training, the external panel score will be multiplied with a coefficient of 1.1.

STEP 2: Critical thinking assignment

Top candidates will be invited to participate in a critical thinking assignment in Helsinki on Monday, 23rd of October, 2023. The assignment evaluates problem solving, writing coherence, and ethical reasoning of the candidates. Students are given written materials (in English) and 90 minutes to prepare a 1–2-page essay based on the materials (in English). Materials cannot be read in advance. Applicants’ possible special needs will be taken into account.

More details about the assignment will be given to selected candidates approximately a week before the assignment.

Top applicants will be ranked by adding together the score of the external panel evaluations (weight: 70 %) and the score of the critical thinking assignment (weight: 30 %). The applicants’ scores will be anonymized to ensure unbiased selection.

The maximum of one doctoral candidate per supervisor per application year can be appointed to the UH-funded doctoral candidate position.

The board of the doctoral programme makes a proposal regarding appointment of salaried doctoral researcher positions. The director of the relevant employment unit makes the final decision on the appointments.

All applicants will be personally notified of the decisions by the end of November. The names of the applicants selected for the positions will be published on the doctoral programme’s web pages (if the applicant has given permission).

Please note that applications for the right to pursue a doctoral degree are processed according to a different schedule by the responsible Faculty. The relevant faculty makes decisions regarding study rights and applicants are personally notified in a separate notification to salary positions. If you are applying also for the study right, please read carefully the instructions for doctoral study right applicants from your doctoral programme webpage.
