What kind of weather do you have? What do you normally do in this weather? How does the weather affect you? Why do you enjoy this type of weather?

IELTS IDIOMS GUIDE

Introduction: The sun is delicious, while the rain is refreshing, the wind keeps us warm, and the snow is invigorating; there is so much to weather. The Asian weather is divided into four seasons: Summer, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter.

What kind of weather do you have: But today, I'd like to talk about the Winter, my favourite season. Though the entire year provides us with many fun opportunities, Winter has something special, something whimsical that places it on my list of favorites.

What do you normally do in this weather: The winter season is jam-packed with events. I usually spend the wonderful evenings of this season with my family. Every weekend, while my mother bakes delicious cakes for us, I light a bonfire in my backyard. On Christmas and New Year's Eve, I distribute sweets to the public and donate warm clothing to those in need.

How does the weather affect you: You can feel the magic in the air when the first winter breeze blows through the trees. In my country, the season begins in early November and lasts until late February. The coldest yet most active season occurs in December and early January.

Why do you enjoy this type of weather: I adore cold weather because it brings people together; we all long for warmth, love, and connection. The holidays bring big family meals and never-ending gratitude, and the wheel of time seems to turn a little slower than usual. Also, I adore hot cocoa, hot cider, and peppermint-spiced lattes, and there is no better time to enjoy all of these than during the Winter.

Introduction: Although I enjoy activities such as swimming in scorching heat and sipping coffee in freezing temperatures, my favourite weather is rainy.

What kind of weather do you have: Rain usually falls in my city during July, August, and September. However, it can also occur in February and March.

What do you normally do in this weather: Most people consider the current weather to be a blessing. Some call it romantic weather, while others consider it a divine blessing. My city's summers are brutal. So whenever it rains, we get some relief from the oppressive heat.

How does the weather affect you: On rainy days, I usually go for a long drive. As a foodie, I enjoy eating my favorite snacks like cutlets and spring rolls with espresso coffee to make the most of the weather. Aside from that, I attend rain dance parties.

Why do you enjoy this type of weather: Because I dislike the hot and humid climate, it serves as a stress reliever for me. This weather brings me closer to my mother nature. Furthermore, I have a great deal of respect for farmers because they satisfy our hunger by producing food. I'm happy because farmers are revitalized by rain. Aside from that, my city streets are spotless after the rain, and the air we breathe is pure. I can enjoy my walk more now.

Q1. Why do some people dislike certain types of weather?

A1. I believe this is because the weather can limit people's activities. People may dislike the weather if it prevents them from participating in their favourite activity. For example, my friend despises rainy days because he enjoys playing cricket and is unable to do so due to the rain.

Q2. Is the weather a factor in the economy?

A2. Yes, the weather has an impact on our economy. For example, because our winters are milder, many people from cold northern countries visit us during that time. As a result, it promotes tourism. Furthermore, certain weather conditions, such as hot, sunny days, increase the earnings of local ice cream vendors. Similarly, colder weather boosts the jacket and jumper industry.

Q3. Do you frequently check the weather forecast?

A3. Yes, I monitor the weather forecast regularly. This is because I travel frequently, and knowing the weather allows me to plan ahead of time. Furthermore, climate change has made weather unpredictable. For example, it can rain even during the dry season, so knowing the weather daily has become essential.

Essay on My Favourite Weather

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Favourite Weather in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Favourite Weather

My love for rainy days.

Rainy days are my favorite kind of weather. The sound of raindrops falling is like music to my ears. It makes me feel calm and happy. The air smells fresh, and everything looks clean. When it rains, I like to sit by the window and read a book or sip hot chocolate.

Playing in Puddles

After the rain stops, I put on my boots and go outside. Jumping in puddles is so much fun! I also look for rainbows in the sky. They are colorful and beautiful.

Why Rain is Special

Rain helps plants grow and fills our rivers. Without rain, we wouldn’t have food to eat or water to drink. That’s why rainy weather is not just fun but also very important.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Weather

Rainy days hold a special place in my heart, making them my favorite kind of weather. There’s something magical about the way rain transforms everything. The sound of raindrops falling is like music to my ears, and it brings a sense of calm and peace.

The Freshness After Rain

After the rain stops, the air feels clean and fresh. It’s as if the whole world has been washed and is now sparkling. The plants look greener, and the flowers seem brighter with drops of water on their petals. This freshness makes me feel happy and energetic.

For many kids, including me, rain means fun time! Jumping in puddles and watching the ripples is a simple joy that rain brings. Even though adults often tell us to stay dry, getting a little wet in the rain is a part of the adventure.

Cozy Indoor Activities

Rainy weather is perfect for staying indoors and doing cozy activities. Reading a book or watching a movie while listening to the rain outside feels extra special. It’s like the rain creates a little bubble around you, making everything inside feel safe and snug.

In conclusion, rainy days are the best because they are beautiful, refreshing, and fun. They make the indoors cozy and the outdoors an adventure. For these reasons, rain is my favorite type of weather, and I always look forward to it.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Weather

Introduction to my favourite weather.

Everyone has a type of weather that they like best. For me, my favourite weather is when the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and there is a gentle breeze in the air. This kind of weather makes me feel happy and full of energy. In this essay, I will tell you why I love sunny and breezy days the most.

The Joy of Sunshine

The sun is like a bright, friendly smile in the sky. When the sun is out, it lights up everything around us. It makes the leaves on the trees look green and alive, and it makes flowers look like they are glowing with colors. I love how the sun warms my skin when I am outside. It feels like a cozy blanket on a chilly day. The sun also helps us get vitamin D, which is important for our bones and health.

The Cool Breeze

Even though I love the sun, I don’t like it when it gets too hot. That’s why a gentle breeze is the perfect thing to go with a sunny day. A breeze can cool you down when you start to feel warm. It’s refreshing, like a sip of cold water on a hot day. The wind also makes the trees sway and the leaves rustle, which sounds like music to me. It’s fun to fly kites or watch birds glide on the wind when it’s breezy.

Perfect Weather for Playing

Sunny and breezy weather is the best for playing outside. You can run around without getting too hot or too cold. It’s great weather for sports like soccer or baseball. When it’s nice outside, my friends and I can play in the park all day. We can have picnics, go on bike rides, or just lie on the grass and look at the clouds. There’s so much to do when the weather is just right.

Good for Nature

This weather is not just good for people; it’s good for nature too. Plants need sunlight to grow, and the breeze helps spread seeds and pollens to make more plants. Animals enjoy the weather as well. You can see squirrels running around and birds singing in the trees. It’s like the whole world is happy when the weather is sunny and breezy.

In conclusion, my favourite weather is when it’s sunny with a light breeze. This weather makes me feel cheerful and active. It’s perfect for playing outside and enjoying nature. I love how the sun and the wind work together to create a beautiful day. For me, there is nothing better than a bright, breezy day to make me feel great.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

  • Explain how this weather affects you
  • And explain why you like this type of weather.

Sample Answer:

I would love to tell you about that weather which makes me happy inside out, and it’s rainy weather.

This weather occurs randomly. I’m not a fan of the rainy season, which comes in June-July in India, and during the rainy season, it rains all the time; it makes me depressed. I mostly like rainy and cloudy weather, which occurs during the summers for a day or two. It gives relief from the sizzler days.

I go out with my sisters and brother for the outing on our bicycles, which we usually don’t do. The way the cold breeze hits my body and gives me goosebumps is just unexplainable. I do not have words to express how cheerful I feel during such weather.

Due to the pleasant weather, I cook Indian fried foods such as Pakoras and Samosas. My friends and family say I am a good cook, and all the family members enjoy the delicious dishes with flavored tea. I love tea with the flavor of cardamoms.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card

my favourite type of weather essay

Describe your favourite weather

What kind of weather it is?

When this weather usually occurs?

What you usually do during this weather?

Explain how this weather affects you and why you like it?

I enjoy all kinds of weathers for copious reasons, however, my favourite one is snowy weather during winters. Winter breezes feel magical and experiencing them with family create memorable events. I wait for this time of the season to have delightful time with new additions to my wardrobe and mini library.

It occurs in winter season which lasts for about two or three months beginning in November and lasting until January. Sometimes, it lasts longer depending on the region where it continues to snow or have cold winds until February. Snow creates bewitching landscapes and hotels offer cozy  stay that include serving of warm food and beverages to enjoy the weather.

I like sitting by the window reading a book with a cup of hot chocolate while watching the snowfall. At times when I am not doing this, I have colossal  amount of fun with family and friends who often come over for a game nights and dinners. I love organising such social gatherings to keep in touch with my friends. Sometimes, I travel to an adventurous location to admire the scenic beauty that snow creates and often go skiing whenever I find time.

Snowy weather brings contentment to me. I like playing in snow with my nephew who is a little bundle of joy. However, it does sometimes give me a headache, but it is usually manageable. There are also some sporting events conducted that include a competition of making sculptures using snow and being an art lover, I make sure to participate in them.

Vocabulary:

  • Copious – various
  • Bewitching – enchanting
  • Cozy – comfortable
  • Colossal – great
  • Contentment – a state of happiness

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. do you often pay attention to the weather forecast.

I check the weather forecast only when I have plans to travel somewhere or just go out. It helps to decide the kind of clothes I need to wear and equipment like an umbrella to take with me while I am out. A clear sky can quickly turn dark with rainy clouds, so weather forecast is reliable to make necessary preparations in case of an emergency.

2. How does the weather (or, the weather forecast) affect what activities people do?

Weather influences us in multiple ways. For instance, when a picnic is planned and it suddenly starts to rain, it ruins the plans of that outing. Likewise, rainy weather effects sporting events where play must stop due to bad weather conditions. In addition, severe snowfall obstructs transportation and high temperature poses as a threat to people going out who might get dehydrated.

3. Why do some people dislike some kinds of weather?

I believe it is because of the effects that weather has on people and their daily routine. If weather conditions restrict people from going about their day or induce some kind of health implications, they may dislike that kind of weather. I do not like hot weather as it makes me feel irritated and thirsty all the time.

4. Does the weather have an effect on the economy?

Yes, weather influences the economy of a region. For example, summertime crop yield, especially that of fruits like mangoes generates revenue increasing the economic conditions of a region based on their export business. On the other hand, countries that have extreme snowfall during winter see a decline in their economy as it makes regular movement difficult.

Sample Recording

I was born in Hanoi and have been living here for pretty much my whole life. Hanoi is known for all kinds of  things, from street food to crazy rush hour traffic . And the city is also unique when it comes to how fickle the  weather is. In the summer, the mornings can be so scorching hot that you won’t want to leave your house or  office, and then all of a sudden it’ll be raining cats and dogs in the afternoon. Perhaps for someone who has spent more than 20 years living here, I somehow know the best time of year to go out and enjoy a picnic or go  on a bicycle tour with your friends: and that’s late autumn.

The weather during the last two weeks of October is just ideal for all kinds of activities. I mean, who doesn’t  love looking at a pure blue sky ? Or who doesn’t love having a change of scenery after a torturously hot  Summer, instead, having a good time with your family in a gentle breeze ? And people always say that during  this time of year, Hanoi is the most beautiful.

This is also when I like to spend some quality time with my mum and dad and other people around me. We  usually invite some neighbours around and have a barbecue out in the open . My dad has a very old cassette  player, that he seems to be very proud of, maybe because no one in the neighbourhood has this kind of thing  anymore, and he always brings it out during the barbecue and listens to some sport news with his friends while  enjoying a few beers . Other people usually turn on some music and sing along. It’s just like a feast of a small  Viking clan, and it is so fun to be a part of.

Living in a city where the weather can be so harsh and pretty much unpredictable all year round, I think having  2 weeks or so of perfect weather where I can have a truly joyous occasion with my family and neighbours isn’t  so bad.

Vocabulary highlights:

1. rush hour traffic – when traffic is the busiest

2. unique – one of a kind

3. fickle – changing suddenly or often

4. scorching hot – very hot

5. raining cats and dogs (idiom) – raining heavily

6. ideal – perfect

7. pure blue sky – a very blue sky without a cloud

8. a change of scenery – to go somewhere different after being in one place for a long time

9. torturously hot – extremely hot

10. a gentle breeze – a light wind

11. quality time – time that you spend with someone to improve your relationship

12. out in the open – outdoors eg. in a park

13. enjoying a few beers – drinking some beer with friends

14. so harsh – unkind or not nice

15. a truly joyous occasion – a very happy occasion

Follow-ups of Describe Your Favourite Weather

Question 1:- do you often pay attention to the weather forecast (why/why not).

Answer:- No, I do not pay attention to the weather forecast Because I don’t have time, and also I believe that whatever is the weather, we have to go through it, and even if I go through the weather forecast, it’s prediction is always wrong for instance if it shows that today it will rain and it doesn’t rain and I have to carry an umbrella with me without any reason.

Question 2:- How does the weather (or, the weather forecast) affect what activities people do?

Answer:- I believe that If people believe about the production of the weather forecast, it will lead to nowhere like I said if it shows that it’s gonna rain And if it doesn’t then but is unnecessary to carry an umbrella with us. Sometimes it can be beneficial. If it shows, the temperature will rise, we can protect ourselves by wearing a cap.

Question 3:- Why do some people dislike some kinds of weather?

Answer:- I think some people do not like the weather, say rainy season, because we have to manage ourselves along with using an umbrella in this busy schedule of ours if we want to do some work and we are completely wet it will be difficult for us to work in those wet clothes.

Question 4:- Does the weather have an effect on the economy?

Answer:- Yes, I think so the weather will help affect industrialization too. In our country, if the rain doesn’t stop for three or more days a number of people who are going to work will have difficulties reaching their office due to this, they won’t be able to finish the work in time, and this can affect the work.

Question 5:- Are there any differences in economic activity in the different seasons?

Answer:- From my point of view, I think in the winter season the sale business for a sweater or woollen clothes will be high however in summer season I think the sale distribution of mangoes is high because everybody likes to eat that fruit and also it’s a one time fruit in a season the demand for it is quite high.

Talk About Your Favourite Weather. You should say:

  • What kind of whether it is
  • When this weather usually occurs
  • What you usually do during this weather

Sample Answer

I am an absolute nature lover and am always awestruck by the natural phenomena that change every now and then. It has always been a matter of intrigue for me. However, besides being beguiled by the complexity of these phenomena, something that I am even more interested in is the variety in seasons and weather and especially the weather that we have in the spring season. I am quite a balanced personality myself and in that case, I love everything which is just balanced well and is not extreme at any end. Therefore, the weather where there is not too much scorching heat and not too much blood-chilling cold is what I love the most.

This kind of weather only actuates in the spring season around Feb-March, and honestly, that is the reason why these months are one of my favourite as I do not have to be fidgeted about wearing too many clothes or worrying about the heat rash that I generally get given the fact that I am sensitive to heat.

Usually, there is nothing peculiar or eccentric that I do or, for that matter, I don’t have any planned endeavours to do in this particular weather. However, it has got more to do with my comfort and composure that I could live my life smoothly in this particular weather.

Meaning: process Eg.: These phenomena are really interesting and beautiful.

Meaning: to be surprised by something you find interesting. Eg.: I was awestruck at the beauty of that bird.

Meaning: interest g.: Nature can often intrigue you by any of its aspects.

Meaning: worried about something Eg.: I fidgeted about the result as I didn’t perform well in the exams.

Meaning: special/unique Eg.: I don’t think there are any peculiar features of this building.

Part 3 Questions

How does the weather (or the weather forecast) affect the activities people do.

The weather decides the fate of a lot of activities. For instance, if we plan to go for an excursion, rain could ruin the plans. Also, weather forecasts can prognosticate the weather of a particular day well in advance and in that way, it becomes a lot easier for us to determine our plans for the day and whether to execute our plans or not.

Why do some people dislike some kind of weather?

It highly depends upon the persona of a person. For example, some might love when it drizzles, while some might completely despise rain. Similarly, some might like basking in the sun, while some might not like to tan. Hence, it has more to do with personal preferences.

Do you think the weather has an influence on people’s moods?

I guess yes, it does. To illustrate, people might not want to step out of their homes when it is too sunny to handle and this way, some might get irksome and tetchy as they could not execute some crucial action. Also, pleasant weather generally casts a soothing effect on the minds of people.

How do you feel about the climate in recent years?

Well, the climate has been going haywire in recent years. It seems as though the word ‘balance’ has lost its true meaning. The most unexpected weather comes to the fore when it is highly unlikely to come. I believe humans are culpable in this regard.

Meaning: trip Eg.: I am interested in going on the excursion you all are planning to go on.

  • Prognosticate

Meaning: to predict Eg.: The sage prognosticated the fate of that man years ago.

Meaning: sprinkles of drops Eg.: I love the drizzle, though I don’t like when it heavily rains.

Meaning: explain Eg.: They illustrated the lectures well.

Meaning: disorganised Eg.: I was going haywire with my schedule.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: The Weather

09/06/2022 11:17 AM

General Rules:

my favourite type of weather essay

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, idioms or special phrases, what's the weather like where you live.

This is where I live right now. (China, Zhuhai)

I live in a small seaside city called Zhuhai, and as a southern Chinese city , the weather is mainly hot and humid . The summer lasts for quite a while , and some people joke about it being over six months long . The temperatures can go up to 35 in the summer but do get down to 10 in the short winter .

My Personal Answer:

Do you prefer cold weather or hot weather?

I prefer the warm and sunny weather of the summer. This is my favorite time of the year when I can enjoy a nice walk in the park , absorb some sunshine and feel warm and comfortable . I don't like cold, at all .

Do you prefer dry weather or wet weather?

Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast when how often.

Well, as we all have smartphones these days, I receive it directly on my screen . Every time I turn my phone on , I see a notification and an icon of the weather forecast . Now If I want to learn more information , I could click on it and get a detailed forecast . I don't do that so often though. I think the icon is more than enough for me to know the temperature and the type of weather I have to expect .

Is the weather important for your daily life?

Is the weather important for your mood.

• It keeps changing every now and then.

• We enjoy many types of weather in India

• We have hot weather in summers and cool weather in winters.

• The weather in spring and autumn is generally pleasant.

• The weather I am going to talk about here is the pleasant weather we have during the spring, that is March and the beginning of April.

• This is a very welcome weather because it brings great relief from the intense cold of winters.

• The flowers are in full bloom everywhere, and you can hear the happy chirping of the birds.

• Spring season gives you a reason to smile.

• It infuses colour in your life.

• The spring season is important for farmers.

• Crops ripen in the fields.

• Farmers store wheat and barley at home.

• Everybody feels a sense of joy and happiness.

• Besides, spring is a season of festivals for the Hindus.

• Holi is a festival of eating and drinking.

• I enjoy it the most.

• Holi adds to the glory of the spring season.

• Days and nights are neither too long nor too short.

• I hate the cold wind of winter.

• I do not like the hot sun of summer.

• I dislike mud and dirt caused by the rains.

• So spring is my favorite season, and its weather is my favourite weather.

Favourite Season

• India is a diverse country. We namely enjoy four seasons i.e. summer, winter, autumn, and spring.

• Because of global warming summer season is extended and we have summer for almost six months a year.

• In spring generally, my exams are near and so my favourite season remains winter.

IELTS Speaking part 3 Follow Up Questions .

Here are some follow up questions you may be asked during part 3 IELTS Speaking exam by the IELTS examiner related to 1st cue card:

“Describe your favourite weather IELTS Cue Card 2021”

1. Do you often pay attention to the weather forecast? (Why?/Why not?)

Yes, I pay attention to the weather forecast on a regular basis. The reason is I travel a lot and it becomes necessary to know about the weather to be prepared in advance.

Also, climate change has made the weather unpredictable. It sometimes rains even in the dry season as such knowing the weather on a day-to-day basis has become a necessity.

2. How does the weather (or, the weather forecast) affect what activities people do?

People prefer to stay indoors on hot sunny days or rainy days and go out for picnics on pleasant days.

Also, there are things we like to eat in certain weather – for example, fritters on rainy days, ice creams on warm days, etc. It also affects the clothing patterns. People wear light-colored loose cotton dresses in summers and dark warm clothes in cold weather.

3. (Similar to above) How does the weather affect people’s daily lives?

4. Why do some people dislike some kinds of weather?

I think it’s because the weather can limit people’s activities. If the weather restricts people from enjoying their favorite activity, it can make them dislike that weather.

My friend hates rainy days because he likes to play cricket and he can’t do that because of the rain.

5. Do people wear different clothes in different types of weather (or, different seasons)?

( Same as 2)

6. Does the weather have an effect on the economy?

Yes, the weather affects our economy. For example, due to milder winters, a lot of people from cold northern countries visit us during that time.

Thus it promotes tourism. Also, certain weather like hot sunny days boosts the earning of local ice cream vendors. Similarly, winters boost the jackets and sweaters industry.

7. (Similar but different) (In your country), are there any differences in economic activity in the different seasons?

There are differences in certain economic activities. For example, warm clothes’ industry gets a boost in the winter season. Similarly, farming is also dependent upon seasons – certain crops like rice are grown in summers whereas others like wheat in winters.

What is your favourite weather? IELTS Speaking Answer

Sample Answer 1:

Well, I would say that my favorite type of weather is sunny and mild. I like it when the sun is shining and there is a light breeze in the air. It makes me feel happy and energized. I enjoy spending time outdoors, going for a walk, or having a picnic when the weather is nice.

However, I also appreciate rainy weather, especially when I’m indoors. There’s something cozy and calming about the sound of raindrops tapping against the window, and it’s the perfect excuse to curl up with a good book or watch a movie. Rainy days can be a good opportunity to relax and recharge, and I always feel refreshed after a day spent indoors.

Overall, I would say that my favorite weather depends on my mood and what I plan to do. I like sunny weather for outdoor activities and rainy weather for indoor relaxation.

Describe your favourite weather.

Sample Answer 2:

Personally, I think that each type of weather has its own unique charm and appeal.

For example, on a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite like feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin and enjoying a refreshing dip in the pool or the ocean. On the other hand, during the winter, there’s something magical about watching snowflakes fall from the sky and snuggling up by the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa.

Overall, I think that the best weather is the one that allows you to do the things you enjoy and spend time with the people you love. Regardless of whether it’s sunny or rainy, cold or hot, what’s most important is making the most of each day and appreciating the beauty of nature.

Talk About Your Favorite Weather.

Sample Answer 3:

Well, I live in a region that has all four seasons, so my favorite weather depends on the time of year. In general, I prefer mild temperatures, not too hot or too cold. I enjoy sunny days with a light breeze because they’re perfect for outdoor activities like picnics or walks in the park.

During the spring season, I like it when it’s not too hot or too cold. The flowers are in bloom, and everything looks so vibrant and colorful. I love hearing the birds chirping and feeling the gentle breeze on my skin. It’s such a refreshing time of year.

In the summer, I prefer the weather to be warm but not scorching hot. I enjoy spending time at the beach or swimming pool, and I love having barbecues with friends and family. Sometimes, the heat can be too much, but as long as there is a cool breeze or a shaded area, it’s still enjoyable.

During the autumn season, I like it when the weather starts to cool down and the leaves change color. I love the crispness in the air, and I enjoy going on hikes or walks in the forest. It’s a beautiful time of year, and the weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Finally, during the winter season, I prefer the weather to be snowy and cold, but not too extreme. However, I don’t enjoy it when the weather gets too cold or when there’s a lot of ice on the ground because it can be dangerous to walk or drive.

Overall, my favorite weather is mild, sunny, and with a light breeze. But I also enjoy the different weather patterns throughout the year, as they bring their unique beauty and opportunities for different outdoor activities.

What is your favorite weather? How does it make you feel?

Sample Answer 4:

In terms of weather, I would say that I appreciate different types of weather for various reasons. If I had to choose a favorite, I would say that I prefer sunny weather. There’s something about clear blue skies, a warm sun, and a light breeze that makes me feel energized and optimistic. I enjoy being able to spend time outdoors without worrying about getting wet or cold. Sunny weather also tends to put people in a good mood, which can create a pleasant atmosphere for socializing and enjoying outdoor activities.

That said, I also appreciate cooler weather for its crispness and coziness, and rainy weather for the sense of calm and relaxation it can bring. Ultimately, I think it’s important to appreciate and adapt to different weather conditions, as each one has its own unique benefits and drawbacks .

IELTS Topics: Weather

Posted by David S. Wills | Oct 10, 2019 | IELTS Tips | 0

IELTS Topics: Weather

There are certain topics in the IELTS exam which can be considered quite common. They are not guaranteed to appear in your next exam, but they are common enough that you really should spend some time studying them. One of these super common IELTS topics is weather .

I’m sure that when you first began learning English, you learned to talk about the weather. In my first teaching job, I taught this topic to kindergarten students. Even those cute little 3-year-olds could say, “It’s a sunny day!” or “It is raining.” Of course, for IELTS you need to be able to produce more advanced language than that!

Today, I want to tell you all about weather as a topic for your IELTS test. I’ll explain a little about how it might appear in the exam, and also give you some useful language for describing it.

IELTS Speaking Questions about Weather

weather forecast for ielts

The IELTS speaking test is by far the most likely part of the exam to contain questions about weather. This topic could appear in any of the three parts of the speaking test, but it is most likely to occur in part one as the topic is rather shallow. In part one, you aren’t expected to say very much, and so this is the best place for simple questions about things like weather. Here are ten example questions about weather from IELTS speaking part 1:

  • What’s the weather like where you live?
  • Does the weather affect your mood?
  • Do you like sunny days?
  • What type of weather do you like best?
  • Does the weather ever affect what you do?
  • Does it bother you much when it rains?
  • What do you like to do on sunny days?
  • Does it rain a lot in your hometown?
  • Which months have the best weather in your country?
  • Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

All of those questions are quite simple, factual matters. There is no real complexity to them because they would be asked in part one and you will only be expected to give a basic answer. For example, let’s look at two of the questions from above:

  • It rains a lot in my hometown, even in the summer. Sometimes it’s sunny but it’s never really very warm.
  • I really like warm, sunny days the best. When the weather is like that, you can go out and do interesting things rather than being stuck indoors.

You can see that in those answers, I have given only two sentences as a reply. You might think that this is not enough, but actually it is perfectly fine. Notice that I also didn’t use any complex vocabulary. This is also acceptable because for part one the questions really will be simple. You might have a chance to show off more in part three, but don’t worry about it. Sometimes it’s best to use simple language with a high degree of accuracy.

Part two is a little harder to predict, and it’s less likely that you will get a weather question here, but it could still happen. Two cue cards that you might possibly encounter will ask you to do the following:

  • Describe your favourite kind of weather.
  • Describe a time when you experienced extreme weather conditions.

In each case, you would need to follow the cue card and give an appropriate response. Here is a video about describing a season, which has some overlap with the topic of weather.

Part three might have questions about weather as well, but remember that here they will be more complex and abstract. In this section, questions often get into morality, gender, age, and other difficult issues. There isn’t really too much that could be said about weather here, but you might find something like the following:

  • Do you think that weather affects people’s behaviour?

Notice that this is similar to a question from part one, but now we are talking about people in general , rather than your personal opinion. This is much harder to do, and of course here you are expected to speak for longer. You might give an answer like this:

  • I think that weather definitely affects people’s behaviour. You just have to go outside on a sunny day to see how friendly people are compared to when it’s raining. Also, when the weather is really bad you see people looking depressed and often acting with impatience towards others. People do things like fight over taxis or push rudely past each other when it’s rainy and cold. So, yeah, it definitely has an impact.

This answer is much longer than my first ones, and you can see how each sentence sort of adds a little more to the idea. There is also a basic introduction and conclusion as I tell my listener what I think and then summarize what I said. But is there much difficult weather vocabulary? Not really. There isn’t too much that you can really say in a question like this, as it relates more to a person’s mood than actual weather.

Weather for IELTS Writing

It is less common that you will encounter the topic of weather for IELTS writing, but it could still happen. For one example, you may see weather appear in task 1 as you have to describe patterns of rainfall or hours of sunshine. However, this really wouldn’t require much knowledge of the weather, as you are just expected to describe what you see.

For task 2, there is definitely more scope but the topic of weather is a bit limited. Instead, you would probably see it arise within the greater topic of environment . For example, look at the following question and sample answer. I will highlight some useful vocabulary that may be helpful for you in giving more complex descriptions of weather and the related issue of global warming.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Question: Weather

Global warming is one of the biggest threats to our environment. What causes global warming? What solutions are there to this problem?

Sample Answer

It is clear that the earth’s climate is changing due to human activity. The weather is growing increasingly erratic , and temperatures are soaring in many places. This essay will explore the reasons for this, as well as some possible solutions.

Our modern style of living is causing huge damage to the planet in a number of ways. For one thing, people want constant comfort in their homes, and this means huge amounts of energy must be generated to provide them with electricity, not to mention the production of goods that make them feel happy. As such, power stations and factories around the world ch urn out huge volumes of emissions that go straight into the atmosphere and cause terrible damage. This is compounded by emissions from cars and airplanes, which are also continually rising as the population grows and people become more mobile. Altogether, these cause global warming by changing the earth’s atmosphere and trapping heat .

The problem needs to be dealt with immediately or else there will be no chance of saving the planet later. Governments around the world need to work together to stamp out toxic emissions from factories, power stations, and transportation. Once lowered, these should also be offset by planting more trees to replace carbon dioxide with oxygen. Doing all this will take a massive effort, but it is important that the world is in agreement. Primarily, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of governments, who will need to impose regulations to stop corporations and individuals from perpetrating more destruction upon the environment .

In conclusion, the earth is dying because of human actions, and the whole world will need to act immediately to reverse the damage.

IELTS Reading and Listening Topic: Weather

I don’t really recommend preparing for IELTS reading and listening in terms of topic because actually the topics here are much wider, particularly for reading. In the reading test, you could be given a passage about almost anything, and for listening the final lecture is pretty much the same. Theoretically, any of those could well relate to weather, but you wouldn’t really be expected to know that much about it. Instead, you’d just be expected to have the basic English skills required to pick apart the grammar and main ideas.

Of course, knowing about the weather is useful and you should definitely study it. Reading and listening to English sources like news articles is always helpful and if these are about weather, it may give you a slightly better chance at IELTS listening and reading. (Pro tip: Try watching the weather forecast in English.)

Important Language for Discussing the Weather

As we have seen, most of the questions that are likely to arise in IELTS relating to the topic of weather are actually quite simple, and you wouldn’t need to know complex terminology for the topic. It would be enough to know words like hot, cold, rain, sun, etc. Of course, you also need to know the noun and adjective forms:

Most that is pretty simple, but if you want to impress the examiner a little more, you can try using slightly more specific language. By this, I mean that you don’t just have to say “rain” or “rainy.” It rains a lot in the UK, so we have many words for this type of weather. 😄

We can use other nouns to describe particular kinds of rain:

We can also use an adjective to modify the word “rain”:

  • Driving rain
  • Pouring rain
  • Torrential rain
  • Freezing rain

my favourite type of weather essay

We could also use some verbs to talk about how it was raining:

  • The rain battered down around us.
  • It was pouring rain all night.
  • The rain seemed to go right through us.
  • It just sprinkled down for an hour and then stopped.

You see, it is possible to extend your vocabulary a little from “rain” to using a wider range of language. None of those words or phrases is particularly “advanced” but they all offer a chance to go beyond the most basic and obvious term.

When talking about weather, there are different types of word that we can use. I showed you above that we can vary how we talk about rain by using verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Well, that is possible for some types of weather.

We can say “it is + adjective”:

  • It is sunny.
  • It is rainy.

Or “it is a(n) adjective + day”:

  • It is a sunny day.
  • It is a rainy day.

We can also say “it is verb+ing”:

  • It is raining.
  • It is snowing.

Or we can even use “there +noun”:

  • There is snow outside.
  • There will be thunder later.

Some words can be adapted to all forms:

  • It’s raining! (verb)
  • It’s rainy! (adjective)
  • There’s been a lot of rain recently. (noun)

However, others can’t:

  • It’s sunning!
  • It’s sunny!
  • There’s been a lot of sunshine recently.

Here is a PPT I made for my former students. It contains some interesting language about weather. I recommend that you download it and play it on your computer so that you can challenge yourself without seeing the answers first.

I would like to mention here that I have missed out some apparently obvious questions from above. The questions I might have also included were things like, “What’s your favourite season?” Actually, I feel that there is a slight distinction between seasons and weather , and so I will keep this particular article devoted to the latter. If you want to learn how to talk about seasons for IELTS, you can check this link .

It could also be argued that there is some crossover into the topic of climate change and environment because obviously the current phenomenon of global warming is related to the weather. However, I will also leave this aside for now and just focus on more basic weather questions.

The cool weather, the beautiful foliage, and the many outdoor activities make it a season to look forward to. In this essay, I will explain why autumn is my favorite season.

My favorite season is autumn because of the cool weather and beautiful foliage. After the hot and humid summer, the cool weather that autumn brings is a welcome relief. The temperature is just right, not too hot and not too cold. The air becomes crisp and refreshing, making it perfect for outdoor activities. The leaves on the trees change color and fall, creating a beautiful landscape. The red, yellow, and orange colors of the leaves are a sight to behold. The trails are not too crowded, and the scenery is beautiful. Apple picking is another activity that I enjoy during autumn. It is a fun activity that allows me to enjoy the cool weather and the beautiful foliage.

My Favourite Season Essay Example 2

Every season has its own unique charm and beauty, but there is always one that stands out as a personal favorite. For me, that season is autumn. From the stunning foliage to the comfortable temperatures, there are so many reasons why I love this time of year. In this essay, I will explain why autumn is my favourite season by exploring its beautiful scenery, outdoor activities, and cozy atmosphere.

The first reason why autumn is my favourite season is the breathtaking foliage that it brings. As the leaves begin to change colour, the entire landscape transforms into a stunning display of red, orange, and yellow. The trees appear to be on fire, and it is truly a sight to behold. I love taking long walks during this time of year, admiring the beauty of nature and feeling the crisp air on my face. There is something incredibly peaceful about being surrounded by such natural beauty.

Another reason why I love autumn is the perfect weather it brings. The heat of summer has subsided, and the chill of winter has not yet arrived. This makes it the ideal time for outdoor activities such as hiking and apple picking. The cool, dry air is refreshing and invigorating, and it makes physical activity much more enjoyable. I love spending my weekends exploring the outdoors during this time of year, soaking up the beauty of the season and staying active at the same time.

Finally, autumn is a special time of year because of the cozy atmosphere it creates. As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, people tend to spend more time indoors. This creates the perfect opportunity for indulging in seasonal treats such as pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider. The warm and comforting flavours of these drinks make them the perfect accompaniment to a cozy night in. Additionally, the soft lighting and warm blankets create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere that is perfect for spending time with loved ones.

In conclusion, autumn is my favourite season for many reasons. From the stunning foliage to the perfect weather and cozy atmosphere, there is so much to love about this time of year. Whether I am enjoying a brisk walk through the woods or cuddled up with a warm drink, I always feel a sense of peace and contentment during the autumn months. Short Essay on Weather For Students:

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. It includes various elements such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and air pressure. Weather plays an important role in our daily lives as it affects our activities and influences our mood.

Importance of Weather

Weather has a significant impact on human life. It affects agriculture, transportation, tourism, health, and even the economy. Farmers rely on weather conditions for their crops to grow while tourists plan their trips based on favorable weather conditions. Weather also has an effect on mental health as certain weather patterns can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Factors Affecting Weather

The main factors that influence the weather are latitude, altitude, topography, and global air circulation patterns. Latitude determines the amount of sunlight received, while altitude affects temperature and precipitation. The shape of the land and presence of water bodies can also affect weather patterns.

Weather conditions can vary greatly depending on geographical location and time of year. Some common types of weather include sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy, hot, cold, and humid.

Sunny Weather

Sunny weather is characterized by clear skies with abundant sunshine. It usually occurs when high pressure systems dominate the area.

Cloudy Weather

Cloudy weather refers to a condition where the sky is covered with clouds blocking out the sun’s rays. This type of weather often occurs during low-pressure systems.

Rainy Weather

Rainy weather is characterized by precipitation in the form of rain. It can be caused by warm air rising and condensing into water droplets, which then fall to the ground.

Snowy Weather

Snowy weather occurs when temperatures are low enough for precipitation to freeze and fall as snow. This type of weather often brings hazardous driving conditions and can lead to school or work closures.

Windy Weather

Windy weather refers to a condition where there is a strong movement of air. It can be caused by differences in air pressure between two areas or by geographical features such as mountains.

Hot Weather

Hot weather is characterized by high temperatures and humidity levels. It can cause heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration if precautions are not taken.

Cold Weather

Cold weather is characterized by low temperatures and can bring about freezing conditions, which can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Humid Weather

Humid weather refers to a condition where there is a high level of water vapor in the air. It can make hot or cold temperatures feel even more extreme and uncomfortable.

Weather affects our lives in many ways, from influencing our daily activities to shaping our emotions. Understanding the different types of weather and the factors that influence them can help us better prepare for any changes in the forecast. As we continue to face the impacts of climate change, it becomes even more important to pay attention to the weather and take necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our environment.

How do you write a weather essay?

A weather essay typically begins with an introduction about the significance of weather, followed by a description of different weather phenomena, their impact on daily life, and any relevant data or statistics.
