Defense powers Presentation College volleyball to fifth win in 3-1 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead

With five wins to start the season, Presentation College is off to an exciting start. And it’s all thanks to their defensive core. 

Flanked by their reliable defense with 87 digs and 11 blocks, Presentation defeated Concordia College-Moorhead over four sets (14-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-20) in Tuesday’s night cap at the Strode Center.  

The hard-fought battle on both ends featured a menacing attack from Concordia’s hitters in the first set, including five kills via Anna Brakke. And while Presentation got off to a 3-0 start, their lead slipped quickly away when Concordia got warmed up and went on a 7-0 run to take away all momentum. 

“I wasn’t overly pleased with our start,” Presentation College head coach Chelsey Albrecht said. “We had a different look to us tonight and I think that could’ve been some of it and some of it was Concordia came out playing really well in that first set. They had only two hitting errors and we didn’t really respond to that.” 

With one set lost, Presentation quickly put their performance on the backburner and locked down on their skill sets while also finding ways to make their swings fall. Riding a 6-0 run in the middle of the second set, Presentation found their confidence in both assets. And when Concordia would roar back with the attack that got them through the first set, Presentation would be ready up front. When Presentation was up 21-19, freshman middle hitter Kerstin Knopik blocked Kendra Wiggs’ attack and kept the momentum rolling. 

“We talked in that timeout and said our defense was going to be our thing that carries us there in momentum. We’re priding in our defense because I think we got a great block and we’ve got a great backcourt. We executed defensively all around and that was something that was nice to see,” Albrecht said. 

Knopik finished with three blocks and three kills on the night. 

“She’s just everywhere and she’s getting her hands on everything, and that’s something that’s really promising as a freshman,” Albrecht said. 

Along with Knopik, Constence Rollins and Saige Jones added three blocks each.  

If there’s one area that Albrecht wants to improve, it’s the offensive game. Presentation edged out Concordia in kills with 45, but had more errors with 31. Concordia nearly won the second set after Presentation’s attack started to falter, but a kill from Saige Jones and an ace from Sydney Miller ultimately set the Saints on top.  

Ashley Alfonso led Presentation with 11 kills, while Rollins added 10.  

At the service line, the Saints excelled with eight aces and only three errors. Concordia suffered seven errors in the game.  

The defensive unit once again provided their depth with Laura Babcock and Kenzie Kuxhaus leading in digs with 30 and 25 respectively, but also the addition of junior Cassidy Keller from the bench showed off the depth. Keller finished with nine digs and one ace. 

“I thought she did a really nice job for us defensively and brought a big spark,” Albrecht said. “She’s had a great week of practice, her teammates recognized her last week for practice player of the week. She made a lot of good strides.” 

Concordia College-Moorhead was led by Brakke’s 14 kills, followed by Aberdeen Central graduate Hannah Keil’s 13 kills. Chloe Markovic led with 27 digs. Concordia tallied seven blocks as a team. 

Presentation (5-2) heads to Peru, NE on Friday for the Bobcat Classic and will play four games over two days. 

“We had a slow start, but I liked the way we responded. You can sometimes choose to either roll over and let the other team carry on with the momentum, but that’s not how volleyball works. I said after that first set, those swings are going to start to fall. We will get some of those kills and I knew it would turn around for us,” Albrecht said.

The 2024 NCAA women's beach volleyball championship takes place at Gulf Shores, Alabama this weekend. No. 1 ranked USC will be looking for its fourth consecutive title, after last year's win over rival UCLA.
