Watch: the moment refugee couple learn they’ve won a $4 million home and lottery.

WATCH: Beautiful moment a refugee family takes out mega $4 million South Australia home lottery

A couple who separately fled strife-torn in countries in Africa then met and married in Australia has won one of South Australia’s biggest lotteries.

Aristide Nininahazwe and Esther Mboneye purchased a single ticket among 200,000 sold in the Hospital Research Foundation Group Home Lottery.

Watch the video above to see moment the couple gets the good news

They were shocked to receive a life-changing call from Channel 7’s Cosi on SAFM breakfast radio, telling the couple they had won $1 million cash and the keys to a fully-furnished luxury home at Henley Beach.

“You’re joking Cosi,” Aristide said.

The extra space is welcome with the couple expecting their second child later this year and marks another beautiful moment in their journey together after they met at Esther’s sister’s wedding in 2014.

In the video below, Aristide and Esther talk to Sunrise about their life-changing win

Refugee family takes out $4 million home lottery in SA

Esther had come to Australia as a refugee with her parents in 2005.

Originally from Burundi, her parents had left amid conflict in the 1970s for the Congo, where Esther was born some years later. When civil war broke out there they made their way to Australia.

Separately, Aristide fled civil war in Burundi in 2011 and was a groomsman when he met Esther at the 2014 wedding.

As healthcare workers, the pair said they bought a ticket because they simply wanted to give back to the medical research charity.

“Our aim was not to win this ... it was just to give back to the community,” Aristide said.

Aristide is a disability support worker, while Esther works as a nurse.

The couple was moved to tears as they entered their new $3 million, four-bedroom home on the waterfront in Adelaide.

“I still can’t believe it ... why us?... I feel like I do not deserve this.” an emotional Esther said on Sunrise on Friday morning.

“I’m just trying to take everything in. It’s so beautiful.”

Aristide, Esther, and their three-year-old daughter Tiffany can move into the home in two-and-a-half weeks - just in time for the birth of their baby boy, due in August.

The Hospital Research Foundation Group is a charity that raises money for medical research, improved care in hospitals, and specialised support services in the community.

The couple plans to use their cash prize to travel back to Burundi to visit family, and are looking forward to watching their soccer teams Manchester United and Adelaide in their new living room.

What Becomes of Lottery Winners?

Millions are buying Powerball tickets assuming that winning will bring them a prosperous, work-free life, but research suggests they shouldn't be so certain.

research home lottery winners

This week, many Americans will be buying into the same dream: winning the unprecedentedly large $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot on Wednesday night. Since last week, when the jackpot had accrued to over $500 million, Powerball tickets have been reportedly flying off bodega and convenience-store counters. The odds of winning remain 1 in 292 million —that’s why the lottery is sometimes called a “stupidity tax” —but a ticket’s $2 pricetag does make it a low-risk impulse buy . (Alex Tabarrok, over at Marginal Revolution , suggests that those who participate should buy tickets early in order to enjoy their real value—the pleasure of anticipation—for longer).

In the late 1970s and ‘80s, the sociologist H. Roy Kaplan performed now-classic research on what became of lottery winners. His most famous study asked lottery winners how happy they had been before and after their big checks arrived. That 1978 study , which had a very small sample size, famously found that lottery winners were not that much happier than the control group—a bunch of people who didn’t win the lottery—after their win. (A 2008 Dutch study concluded the same thing .) Kaplan did a bigger study in 1987 on 576 lottery winners , and found that “popular myths and stereotypes about winners were inaccurate”—by which he meant that American lottery winners did not typically quit their jobs and spend lavishly.

That finding has been confirmed in more recent research. A 2004 study found that 85.5 percent of American winners continued to work after winning the lottery (with 63 percent working for the same employer as before), and that the more important work was to a person, the more likely they were to keep working. A Swedish study arrived at a similar finding : 62 percent of Swedish lottery winners continued to work. A study of U.S. lottery winners from the 1980s found that winning a lot of money (rather than just a little bit) increased reported savings rates , and large winners tended to scale back on the number of hours they worked. There may be cultural differences at play: While 85.5 percent of American winners stuck with their jobs, surveys by Camelot, the operator of the British National Lottery, found that a smaller proportion— 41 percent —of winners kept their jobs.

And how do winners manage their finances? The narrative of the short-sighted lottery winner existed as far back as the 1970s. There is indeed some data to back that up. A Camelot survey found that the most popular things Brits spent their winnings on were relatively flashy—properties, cars, and vacations. Similarly, an oft-quoted study of 35,000 lottery winners in Florida found that 1,900 winners filed for bankruptcy within five years—and that while the large infusion of cash reduced the probability of bankruptcy during the first two years of winning, it increased the odds of bankruptcy three to five years out. (However, the researchers only tracked down people who had won $150,000 or less, and these bankruptcy numbers might change with higher sums.) As for the long term, research regarding an 1832 land lottery in Georgia found that the descendants of those winners did not go on to be wealthier after a few generations.

Winners often worry that they will be flooded with requests for money from family and friends, and though there aren’t hard numbers on this, the Camelot survey found that all winners combined had spent over £1 billion on family and friends—a significant amount as that’s 14 percent of the group’s £8.4 billion winnings (investment in their children exceeded this amount). One thing has changed since the 1980s though: Lottery players are increasingly (and disproportionately ) from low-income households (though a jackpot of over $800 million gets rich people playing too ) , and may have less personal-finance knowledge, particularly when it comes to dealing with large sums of money. In the U.K., the National Lottery actually sends legal and financial experts to the homes lottery winners of over £500,000 to offer financial planning advice.

Even with all that research in mind, the overall picture of how lottery-winners fare is still very hard to determine. First, many of these results are found by surveying winners, and self-reported data is notorious for its low quality. Second, it’s not exactly easy to get lottery winners to surrender their financial records for research, so there are likely large holes in even the most scrupulous research. And finally, the fates of the lottery winners who researchers have the easiest time tracking down might skew negative, because tales of financial ruin are more publicized in the media than tales of stability.

In the end, while winning can turn out bad, the real bad thing is probably the lottery itself : America, especially its poor households, spends way too much on it, and the odds are worse than at a casino.

Woman wins $1M in Oregon lottery raffle, credits $1.3B Powerball winner for reminder

research home lottery winners

A forgotten lottery ticket stuffed in a Tupperware container made an Oregon woman a millionaire.

Leslie Carr, 52, a Portland resident, bought the $1 million lucky Raffle ticket for the March 15 drawing at a Fred Meyer in Happy Valley, the Oregon Lottery said .

“I had no idea I was the winner,” Carr told lottery officials. “If it weren’t for the billion-dollar Powerball winner making news, I would have forgot. We don’t check our tickets.”

After learning about the $1.326 billion Powerball win in her state, Carr took a trip to the grocery store where she purchased the tickets to check them. After checking almost all the tickets within her stash Carr checked the last one that gave her the message to visit the Oregon Lottery Headquarters. In disbelief she asked a Fred Meyer staff member to check her lucky ticket, the lottery said.

“I can’t cash this because your prize is worth over $1,000," the staff member told her.

The thought of winning cash from the lottery brought excitement to Carr.

“That’s when I started getting butterflies,” Carr told lottery officials.

After getting those tasks done Carr said she’d love to take a vacation in Hawaii.

Carr told lottery officials that the lottery win was, “a dream come true.”

What are the odds of winning the Raffle?

The odds of winning the $1 million top prize for the Raffle is 1 in 250,000 , the Oregon Lottery said .

UPDATE: Kelly, Davis, Blankenship elected to Moscow City Council

Nov. 8—UPDATE: Sandra Kelly, Drew Davis and Bryce Blankenship have earned seats on the Moscow City Council.

With 100% of precincts reporting in as of early this morning, Kelly received 3,247 votes, Davis 3,017 votes and Blankenship 2,713 votes.

The complete but unofficial vote tallies were published on on the Idaho Secretary of State website, last updated at 2:20 a.m.

Voters picked up to three of the six candidates, with the top three vote-getters earning city council spots.

Evan Holmes (2,310 votes), Joe Campbell (1,147 votes) and Nathan Tupper (711 votes) were also on the ballot.

In Juliaetta, Richard Groseclose was elected mayor with 91 votes, ahead of Eric McDowell (39 votes) and Jeff Lohman (25 votes).

ORIGINAL STORY

Early unofficial results show Sandra Kelly, Bryce Blankenship and Drew Davis as the top three vote-getters in the Moscow City Council race Tuesday night.

Six candidates ran for three seats. Not all of the precinct results were released by press time, but early votes were reported on the Idaho Secretary of State website.

The top three vote-getters were incumbent Kelly with 1,093 votes, Bryce Blankenship with 828 and incumbent Drew Davis with 766.

They are leading Evan Holmes, Joe Campbell and Nathan Tupper.

In the Juliaetta mayor election, incumbent Richard Groseclose is leading Eric McDowell by four votes to three.

In a change from previous elections, all the Latah County ballots were counted by hand on Election Day before they are counted electronically today.

The hand count is part of Latah County Auditor Julie Fry's effort to promote trust in the voting process. She said last month that by cross-checking the hand count with the electronic count, voters can have confidence in the accuracy of the voting machines.

Thirty-two volunteers gathered at the Latah County Fairgrounds on Thursday to help hand-count the ballots.

The volunteers raised their hand and were sworn in by a county employee before beginning their task.

The volunteers separated into teams of four: a reader, an observer and two people who tally votes.

The reader announces the names of the candidates who received votes on each ballot. Two people tally those votes while an observer helps ensure the count is accurate.

The volunteers adhered to the Idaho Secretary of State's guidelines for counting paper ballots. For example, if a citizen votes for too many candidates in a particular race, that vote will not be counted.

During this year's March and May elections, random precincts were picked to count votes by hand. Those tallies accurately matched the voting machine's results, Fry said.

Money latest: Morrisons shoppers are going to notice two changes in stores

Morrisons has launched two major changes for shoppers – with stores offering travel money and trolleys now featuring advertisements. Read this and all the latest consumer and personal finance news below - and leave your thoughts in the box.

Halifax has become the latest major lender to up mortgage rates.

They are putting up a range of deals by 0.2%.

BM Solutions also announced increases today.

It follows similar moves by TSB, NatWest, Virgin, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society, HSBC and Coventry last week.

Lenders are responding to swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - rising on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there.

US trends often materialise elsewhere - though many economists are still expecting a base rate cut from 5.25% to 5% in the UK in June.

This is what average mortgage rates look like as of today...

Justin Moy, managing director of EHF Mortgages, told Newspage: "Yet more bad news for mortgage borrowers, as two of the biggest lenders announce increases to their fixed-rate products.

"As mortgage rates creep up and past 5% even for those with the largest deposits, we seem to be lacking a clear strategy of the government or the Bank of England on how rates will eventually fall.

"Even 2% inflation may not be enough to reverse the recent trends in rates."

Morrisons has launched two major changes for shoppers – with stores now offering travel money and trolleys featuring advertisements.

Announcing their bureau de change service, Morrisons said customers could exchange currencies in select stores or could place their money orders online at Morrisonstravelmoney.com.

Using the online service means customers can either click and collect their cash in certain Morrisons stores or at any of Eurochange's 240 branches. Alternatively, they can go for home delivery.

Services director at Morrisons, Jamie Winter, said the service "will provide our customers with easy access to a wide range of currencies at competitive exchange rates".

So far, stores in the following areas have travel money kiosks:

  • Basingstoke

In other news, the supermarket chain rolled out a new trolley advertising across 300 stores in a partnership with Retail Media Group.

A sweetener used in drinks, sauces, savoury and sweet foods and chewing gum can cause serious damage to people's health, according to a new study.

Neotame, a "relatively new" sweetener, could damage the intestine by causing damage to healthy bacteria in the gut, according to the study, leading it to become diseased and attack the gut wall.

The study by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, found the negative effect of neotame "has the potential to influence a range of gut functions resulting in poor gut health", potentially impacting metabolic and inflammatory diseases, neuropathic pain, and neurological conditions.

The illnesses this could lead to include irritable bowel disease or insulin resistance.

As we reported yesterday, a pilot programme is coming into force in Venice today that means visitors have to pay a €5 (£4.28) charge to enter the city.

Authorities say the pilot programme is designed to discourage tourists and thin the crowds that throng the canals during peak holiday season, making the city more liveable for residents.

Pictures have been emerging this morning of people queueing to register for a QR code that will allow them to enter after they have paid the charge - and officials carrying out checks on people inside the city.

People found to be contravening the rules can be fined up to €300 (£257).

As detailed in our story , the move has been met with anger among some in the city.

Venice is the first city in the world to introduce a payment system for tourists - but comments from its most senior tourist official suggested it may become a more common practice for major tourist hotspots in Europe.

Simone Venturini revealed the pilot programme was being closely watched by other places suffering from mass tourism - including other Italian art cities and hugely popular weekend-break destinations Barcelona and Amsterdam.

More than 160,000 people switched to Nationwide from other providers at the end of 2023, when the building society was offering a huge cash switching incentive.

According to figures from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS), Nationwide had a net gain of 163,363 account switchers between October and December, after leavers were taken into account.

It was the highest quarterly gain since the same period in 2022, when 111,941 switched to Nationwide.

The building society launched a £200 switching bonus for new joiners in September last year - the biggest giveaway on offer at the time. It withdrew the offer just before Christmas.

The latest CASS figures, which show Nationwide had 196,260 total gains before accounting for leavers, suggesting it could have spent up to £39m on nabbing customers from other providers in the last three months of the year.

Barclays and Lloyds Bank saw more modest net gains of 12,823 and 5,800 respectively, while the rest of the UK's big banks reported net losses.

NatWest and Halifax fared worst, losing over 40,000 more switchers each than they gained.

This week saw the last remaining switching offer on the market withdrawn.

Sainsbury's is having technical issues again - with shoppers taking to social media to say their deliveries have been delayed or cancelled.

The supermarket has been replying to customers saying: "I'm really sorry about the tech issues this morning.

"We're aware of the situation and are working to sort it as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we'd advise you place a new order for a future date."

Customer Andrew Savage wrote: "Order has not been delivered and no confirmation email this morning."

Another, John B Sheffield, said: "So angry! Just got through to your customer line after 40 min WAIT.

"Tells me NO DELIVERIES TODAY! tech problem? I've NO FOOD IN! ANGRY!"

In a statement to Sky News, a Sainsbury's spokesperson says: "A small technical issue affected some groceries online orders this morning.

"We have contacted these customers directly to apologise for the inconvenience."

In another update at 10am, the supermarket said that the issue has been resolved.

Responding to customers on X, Sainsbury's also offered those affected e-vouchers and details on how to rebook their orders.

It comes a month after the supermarket had to cancel almost all deliveries on a Saturday in mid-March due to another technical issue.

A potential $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover of UK-based mining company  Anglo American  has sent its shares soaring - and helped the FTSE 100 hit yet another record high this morning.

The attempted mega-merger, by larger Australian rival BHP, is currently being reviewed by Anglo American's board.

The deal, if it goes through, would create the world's biggest copper mining company - and comes as the price of the metal continues to climb amid soaring demand.

Anglo American's shares have surged as high as 13% this morning as news of the negotiations emerged.

The announcement also helped spur the FTSE 100 to a new intraday (during the day) high of 8,098 points.

The index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, has hit a string of records this week, including  an all-time closing high of 8,044 points  on Tuesday.

The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Also moving the markets are a string of company results which were published earlier on Thursday.

Among those issuing updates to investors was drugsmaker AstraZeneca. Its stock is up more than 5% after the firm reported quarterly profit and revenue above market estimates.

Unilever is also up 5% following similar better-than-expected quarterly figures.

Another good performer is  Barclays  - despite reporting a 12% fall in profits for the first three months of 2024. Its shares are up more than 4%.

That's because its quarterly figures are slightly better than expected, and the bank has said it expects its fortunes to improve later this year.

Meanwhile, as tensions in the Middle East continue, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil continues to hover at a price of around $88 (£70).

This morning £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, similar to yesterday.

Every week we get experts to answer your Money Problems - usually on a Monday, but today we have a short, bonus addition in light of multiple lenders raising mortgage rates this week on fears an interest rate cut could be delayed to a little later this year (note: many economists still think it will come in summer).

A few readers have got in touch with questions similar to this one...

My remortgage is due to complete on 1 May. I already have an offer but with rates going up, is there any way at all my offer rate could increase? Saz681

We asked David Hollingworth, director at L&C Mortgages, to answer this one...

It's great news that you are already set up with a mortgage offer, Saz - ready to make a smooth switch to a new deal and/or lender, once the current one ends.

It does take time to set up a new mortgage so shopping around the market a good few months ahead will help you put everything in place and avoid slipping onto a high variable rate.

Fixed rates have been nudging up slightly but you have already got a formal offer in place so shouldn't worry.

Applying for a mortgage will generally secure that rate and the lender will then carry out any further checks to issue the mortgage offer.

The offer will be valid for a specified period, often for up to six months. Rates are always shifting for new customers but you can rest easy that your rate should be safe and sound for your switch in May.

Interest in a phenomenon known as "dark tourism" has been steadily rising in recent years - but what is it?

To find out, we've spoken with tourism academic  Dr Hayley Stainton  and renowned dark tourist and author Dr Peter Hohenhaus, who runs a  dark tourism website .

What is it?

In general, dark tourism involves travelling to sites connected to death or disaster.

"Dark tourism has been around for as long as we have been travelling to places associated with death," Dr Stainton says.

However, the term wasn't officially coined until 1996 by John Lennon, a professor of tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University, in Scotland.

"Not everyone is familiar with the term," says Dr Stainton, "[but] many people have been a dark tourist at some time or another, whether intentional or not."

Some examples of the most famous sites

  • Auschwitz concentration camp, Poland
  • 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York, US
  • Chernobyl, Ukraine
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan
  • Choeung Ek "killing fields" and the Tuol Sleng genocide museum at the former S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Areas with a degree of infamy, like Alcatraz, are extremely popular spots that also fall under the "dark tourism" umbrella.

How popular is it?

Dr Hohenhaus and Dr Stainton say they have noticed a rise in its popularity.

"Tourists are looking for more unique and unusual experiences," Dr Stainton says.

"This has seen a move away from the more traditional 'sun, sea and sand' type holidays to a variety of different tourism forms, which includes dark tourism."

Dr Hohenhaus adds: "Maybe people want to connect to more recent and hence more personally relevant history - that is definitely the case with myself."

He goes on: "I think I've learned more about the world through dark tourism than through all of my formal education or my previous academic career."

Is it ethical?

This is the big question associated with dark tourism.

Dr Stainton says that while problems do arise, the stigma around the practice is often misguided.

"People don't visit sites like the killing fields in Cambodia or the site of Chernobyl for 'fun' - they visit for the educational experience, as dark tourism is often also a form of educational tourism," she says.

Problems arise when tourists are not respectful to those who may have been impacted.

"For instance, taking inappropriate photos or laughing and joking when others may be in a state of mourning."

Notorious examples include people taking selfies outside Grenfell Tower and at Auschwitz.

"It is therefore imperative that dark tourists are considerate of those around them and respectful at all times," Dr Stainton says.

"As long as you are not just after a cheap sensationalist thrill - take dark tourism seriously and do it right, and it can be an immensely enriching thing to engage in."  Dr Hohenhaus

Where could you go?

These are Dr Hohenhaus' recommendations:

  • Ijen crater in Indonesia - where at night you can see the fabled blue flames of the sulphur mines next to the volcano crater lake;
  • The Polygon, the former Semipalatinsk nuclear weapons test site of the USSR, now in Kazakhstan;
  • The Goli Otok former prison island off the coast of Croatia;
  • The Murambi memorial to the Rwandan genocide - which Dr Hohenhaus says is "certainly the very darkest place I have ever been";
  • Majdanek concentration camp memorial near Lublin, eastern Poland.

What do you think of dark tourism? Is it misunderstood, educational or abhorrent?  Let us know in the comments section...

John Lewis will be sharing its job interview questions online in an attempt to find the "best talent".

The retail chain hopes that allowing candidates to view questions before an interview will allow prospective employees to "really demonstrate what they can do" and prepare, the Financial Times reports.

John Lewis talent acquisition lead Lorna Bullett told Sky News that interviews can feel daunting and "nerves can seriously impact performance".

She added the company want "the right people" from a variety of backgrounds and with "the best talent" to join.

"It makes absolute business sense to find ways of helping candidates to really demonstrate what they can do," she said.

Ms Bullett added that the process will be "no less rigorous".

Sykesville Resident Celebrates Grand Slam, $5,500 Home Run Riches Prize

Carroll County woman wins $5,500 through new ‘grand slam’ twist

A thrilling start to the baseball season just got a bit more exciting last weekend for one Carroll County resident. The cause for excitement: The crack of the bat resulting in an Orioles’ grand slam scored a $5,500 prize for Nicole Rivera of Sykesville!

After years of playing the Lottery’s second-chance promotions, Rivera was selected as a Contestant of the Game in the Lottery’s popular FAST PLAY Home Run Riches Bases Loaded second-chance promotion . She won $500 for being selected as a Contestant of the Game, and was on deck to win even more if the Orioles hit any home runs in her game on Friday, April 19.

Despite her growing excitement, the bats were quiet most of the night, and the game was not going the Birds’ way. The Kansas City Royals held a 6-0 lead as the seventh inning started, but Rivera was still watching and hoping. Three singles from Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays and Jordan Westburg loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. And that’s when Catcher Adley Rutschman stepped to the plate and hit a thunderous 385-foot grand slam, emptying the bases and delivering an additional $5,000 for Rivera.

The 35-year-old Carroll County resident said she leapt to her feet and was celebrating with her husband and daughter. “We were happy and jumping all around the room,” she said.

The grand slam twist is a new addition to the 2024 version to the Home Run Riches second-chance promotion and will be an exciting element for the Contestants of the Game selected for each of the Orioles 162 regular-season games. Contestants receive $500 for being selected and $500 for each home run the Orioles hit in their designated game — unless the homer is a grand slam, which means a $5,000 prize instead. So far this season, the promotion has awarded $34,500 in prizes from the Orioles’ 35 home runs.

April and May’s Contestants have already been selected, but there are four more monthly drawings to pick the winners for the remainder of the season. The next deadline for entries is May 27. To participate, enter winning or non-winning FAST PLAY Home Run Riches Bases Loaded tickets into your My Lottery Rewards account now through Aug. 26, 2024. Tickets are $5, and the game features instant-win prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000 and a progressive jackpot top prize that starts at $40,000 and increases with the sale of each ticket until a jackpot-winner is sold. The twenty-first century is the era when populations of cities will exceed rural communities for the first time in human history. The population growth of cities in many countries, including those in transition from planned to market economies, is putting considerable strain on ecological and natural resources. This paper examines four central issues: (a) the challenges and opportunities presented through working in jurisdictions where there are no official or established methods in place to guide regional, ecological and landscape planning and design; (b) the experience of the author’s practice—Gillespies LLP—in addressing these challenges using techniques and methods inspired by McHarg in Design with Nature in the Russian Federation in the first decade of the twenty-first century; (c) the augmentation of methods derived from Design with Nature in reference to innovations in technology since its publication and the contribution that the art of landscape painters can make to landscape analysis and interpretation; and (d) the application of this experience to the international competition and colloquium for the expansion of Moscow. The text concludes with a comment on how the application of this learning and methodological development to landscape and ecological planning and design was judged to be a central tenant of the winning design. Finally, a concluding section reflects on lessons learned and conclusions drawn.
