The time is drawing near when books will be closed and hearts and thoughts turned toward home. Like the shepherds of old who journeyed to the manger marked by the star, many of you will travel to a place where a special star hangs over your home—a holy place, a place where love and confidence increase with the years.

Christmas is a busy season. Streets and stores are filled with people making last-minute preparations. Travelers on the highways increase, airports are crowded—all Christianity seems to come to life with music, lights, and festive decorations.

A writer has said:

Of all the holidays there is none that enters so fully into the human heart, and stirs so many of the higher sentiments. The thoughts, memories, hopes, and customs linked with it are bound by antiquity and nationality collectively; and by childhood and old age individually. They embrace the religious, social, and patriotic sides of our nature. The holly and mistletoe entwined among the evergreens, the habit of giving gifts to those we love, the presence of the Christmas tree, the superstition of Santa Claus, all combining to make Christmas the most longed-for, the most universal, and from every standpoint, the most important holiday known to man. [Clarence Baird, “The Spirit of Christmas,” Improvement Era, 23:154 (December 1919)]

The Origin of Christmas

The season is steeped in tradition and its roots stem back in history. The commencement of the holiday lies in pagan worship long before the introduction of Christianity. The god Mithra was worshiped by the ancient Aryans, and this worship gradually spread to India and Persia. Mithra at first was the god of the heavenly light of the bright skies and later in the Roman period was worshiped as the deity of the sun, or the sun-god— Sol Invictus Mithra.

In the first century after Christ, Pompey carried on conquests along the southern coast of Cilicia, in Asia Minor, and many of the prisoners taken in those military actions were brought captive to Rome. This introduced the pagan worship of Mithra to Rome, for these prisoners spread the religion among the Roman soldiers. The worship became popular, particularly in the ranks of the Roman armies. We find today, in the ruins of the cities of the far-flung Roman Empire, the shrines of Mithra. Mithraism flourished in the Roman world and became the chief competitor of Christianity in the religious beliefs of the people.

A festive season for the worshipers of the sun-god took place immediately after the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year—the time when the sun stands still after its annual dip into the Southern Hemisphere. The commencement of its climb from this low point was regarded as the rebirth of Mithra, and the Romans celebrated his birthday on the twenty-fifth of December each year. There was great merriment on this holiday—festivals and feastings, gifts given to friends, and the dwelling places decorated with evergreens.

Gradually Christianity gained a victory over Mithraism, which had been its strongest rival, and the festival day celebrating the birth of Mithra was used by the Christians to commemorate the birth of Christ. The pagan worship of the sun, deeply rooted in Roman culture, was replaced by one of the greatest festivals among Christians. Christmas has come down to us as a day of thanksgiving and rejoicing—a day of good cheer and goodwill to men. Although it has an earthly relation and significance, it is divine in content. The ancient Christian celebration has lived continuously through the centuries.

The Meaning of Christmas Today

How is Christmas regarded today? The legend of Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, the decorations of tinsel and mistletoe, and the giving of gifts all express to us the spirit of the day we celebrate; but the true spirit of Christmas lies much deeper than these. It is found in the life of the Savior, in the principles he taught, in his atoning sacrifice—which becomes our great heritage.

Many years ago the First Presidency of the Church made this significant statement:

Christmas, to the Latter-day Saint, is both reminiscent and prophetic—a reminder of two great and solemn events, which will yet be regarded universally as the mightiest and most wonderful happenings in the history of the human race. These events were predestined to take place upon this planet before it was created. One of these was the coming of the Savior in the meridian of time, to die for the sins of the world; and the other is the prospective event of the risen and glorified Redeemer, to reign upon the earth as King of kings. [ Millennial Star, 70:1 (January 2, 1908)]

In Paul’s short letter to the Galatians, he showed great concern over their apparent disbelief and their forsaking of his teachings regarding Christ. He wrote to them: “But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you. . . .” ( Gal. 4:18–19 ). In other words, Paul expressed himself as suffering pain and anxiety until Christ be “formed” in them. This is another way of saying “in Christ,” as that expression is used by Paul repeatedly in his writings.

It is possible for Christ to be born in men’s lives, and when such an experience actually happens, a man is “in Christ”—Christ is “formed” in him. This presupposes that we take Christ into our hearts and make him the living contemporary of our lives. He is not just a general truth or a fact in history, but the Savior of men everywhere and at all times. When we strive to be Christlike, he is “formed” in us; if we open the door, he will enter; if we seek his counsel, he will counsel us. For Christ to be “formed” in us, we must have a belief in him and in his atonement. Such a belief in Christ, and the keeping of his commandments, are not restraints upon us. By these, men are set free. This Prince of Peace waits to give peace of mind which may make each of us a channel of that peace.

The real Christmas comes to him who has taken Christ into his life as a moving, dynamic, vitalizing force. The real spirit of Christmas lies in the life and mission of the Master. I continue with what the writer defines as the real spirit of Christmas:

It is a desire to sacrifice for others, to render service and to possess a feeling of universal brotherhood. It consists of a willingness to forget what you have done for others, and to remember what others have done for you; to ignore what the world owes you, and think only of your duties in the middle distance, and your chance to do good and aid your fellow-men in the foreground—to see that your fellow-men are just as good as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts—to close your book of grievances against the universe, and look about you for a place to sow a few seeds of happiness, and go your way unobserved. [Baird, p. 154]

In his contemplation of the Christmas season, John Wallingford penned these lines:

Christmas is not a day or a season, but a condition of heart and mind. If we love our neighbors as ourselves; if in our riches we are poor in spirit and in our poverty we are rich in grace; if our charity vaunteth not itself, but suffereth long and is kind; if when our brother asks for a loaf, we give ourselves instead; if each day dawns in opportunity and sets in achievement, however small; then every day is Christ’s day and Christmas is always near.

A wise man has said:

The most amazing thing about the Christmas story is its relevance. It is at home in every age and fits into every mood of life. It is not simply a lovely tale once told, but eternally contemporary. It is the voice crying out in every wilderness. It is as meaningful in our time as in that long-ago night when shepherds followed the light of the star to the manger of Bethlehem. [Joseph R. It has been said that Christmas is for children; but as the years of childhood fancy pass away and an understanding maturity takes their place, the simple teaching of the Savior that “it is more blessed to give than to receive” ( Acts 20:35 ) becomes a reality. Find the True Spirit of Christmas

If you desire to find the true spirit of Christmas and partake of the sweetness of it, let me make this suggestion to you. During the hurry of the festive occasion of this Christmas season, find time to turn your heart to God. Perhaps in the quiet hours, and in a quiet place, and on your knees—alone or with loved ones—give thanks for the good things that have come to you, and ask that his spirit might dwell in you as you earnestly strive to serve him and keep his commandments. He will take you by the hand and his promises will be kept.

I know that God lives. I bear witness of the divinity of his Son, the Savior of the world, and I express appreciation for the blessing of having upon the earth a prophet of the living God.

In closing I would like to say that President Harold B. Lee has asked that I extend to you his love and the heartfelt greetings of the Board of Trustees to the administration, the faculty, and the student body of this great university.

Christmas Speech – We also know Christmas as the ‘feast day of Christ’. It is a Christian holiday but we all celebrate it with great joy and happiness. On Christmas day we honor the birth of Jesus Christ. In the Christian religion, people believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God for years.

Besides, other religions in India celebrate it as a cultural holiday in the month of December. It occurs in the winter season and everyone eagerly waits for it to come.

Every year we celebrate it on 25th December and for Christian, it is the most important day of the year for which they do a lot of preparation and decorations. They decorate Christmas trees, prepare Christmas cards, gifts and who can forget the Santa Clause, etc. all these matters a lot on this occasion.

Preparation for Christmas

Christmas is very important in Christian culture for which they prepare in advance. Furthermore, they also celebrate the festival of Easter to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

People start to prepare for Christmas, which they call advent, and it begins on Sunday, four weeks before Christmas. In addition, the whole season of Christmas is known as Christmastide that ends on 6th January, which means on the 12th days of Christmas. During which people remember epiphany.

Most importantly, the largest community of Christians’ lives ion Mumbai where Roman Catholics can be found; thy make the festival a glory of India in the winter season.

On the eve of Christmas, a midnight mass is considered as the most essential service for Christians, especially for the Catholics. During this, all the family members go to the mass and enjoy a massive feast of different delicacies.

They also give and take gifts to each other. Moreover, they enjoy decorating Churches with poinsettia flowers and candles, especially for the Christmas Eve midnight mass service.

Greeting Each Other

While Christmas occurs on 25th December but people start to greeting each other from few days before Christmas by saying and wishing each other in advance. They greet each other by saying happy Christmas, Merry Christmas, Christmas Mubarak, Subh Christmas, etc.

By giving gifts to each other and through Christmas cards. Also, they decorate the Christmas tree in the house or in the garden is the main tradition and custom of this festival. Furthermore, they decorate the Christmas tree with lots of colorful orbs and many more decorative items.

Moreover, people decorate their homes and churches with candles, electric bulbs and many more items. Besides, the Christians that live in the Southern part of India celebrate Christmas a little differently.

They lit some oil burning clay lamps on their rooftops to symbolize that Jesus Christ is the light of the whole world. In addition, they sing a particular song known as the carol singing and perform other rituals in the church.

Moreover, there are some places where people follow the tradition of cutting the cake to celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. However, Christmas is incomplete with talking about Santa Clause who comes after midnight through the chimney with a lot of gifts for children and distributes it among them.

Also, the Catholics follow a tradition of fasting where they keep fast and do not eat from 1st to 24th December and eat only after the midnight mass service.

In conclusion, we can say that Christmas is the most important festival of Christians for which they prepare in advance. Also, the religions in India celebrate this festival with joy and happiness. Moreover, Christmas revokes the spirit joy and happiness and family get-to-gather among the people.

How to prepare the best Christmas speech ever!

Christmas speeches are often expected as part of workplace celebrations, like the annual company or office Christmas party. Or they may be included in a family and friends get together on Christmas day.

And, yes, it can be really tricky pulling a good one together.

Let's face it.

By the time the season of merriness is upon us, being hey-ho, cheerily merry about preparing a Christmas speech can feel like a step too far.

One twinkly fairy light too many.

However, you can do this. You can find the right words, and make the speech you give a gift by keeping it short, simple and sincere. In other words: stunningly, genuinely awesome. Just the best Christmas speech ever. ☺

The most efficient way to prepare your speech is to:

start with reading through the 7 step Christmas Speech template . That will help you focus your thoughts about what you want to speak about.

7 step Christmas speech template

1. who is your speech for.

Is it family, friends, work colleagues, club members...?

What do they want, or expect, to hear? What would delight them? Is it stories about the events of the year shared by everybody, the company triumphs or challenges...?

Does the occasion suit light-hearted humor or is a solemn tone more appropriate?

Knowing exactly who the audience is will help you choose the tone and content of the speech.

For example, it's unlikely your workplace colleagues would think it appropriate if you were overly flippant, or familiar, and regaled them with tales of your five year old son's exploits. Or that your family would be thrilled to hear a detailed week by week breakdown of how sales sunk or soared in the third quarter.

2. What is the purpose of your speech?

Are you aiming to inspire people? Do you wish to unite them? Perhaps you want to thank them? Maybe you want them to laugh and relax.

And perhaps what you want to achieve is a combination of all those suggestions.

Being clear about why you are making the speech will guide your choice of theme, tone and content.

What's certain is you're not deliberately setting out to bore them by rambling on and on, then on some more.

3. What theme is right for your audience?

A theme is a thread to hang your speech on. It unites it by linking all the pieces, (opening, body and conclusion), together. To keep your speech simple choose one from these six theme suggestions .

4. Organize or outline the body of your speech

It's easier to begin with the body or middle of your speech because this is where you express your main points or ideas around your chosen theme. You will add the conclusion and beginning later.

Depending on how long you want to speak for, choose 1 to 3 main points fitting your audience, purpose and theme.

Start with the most important first. For each point you make, give one or two examples to illustrate it.

When you give your speech you'll link the points with transitions, or bridges, to enable your audience to follow you easily from one idea to the next.

The pattern or template you'll use looks like this:

Point One : Main idea - Example, example Transition or link to...
Point Two : Idea - Example, example Transition or link to...
Point Three : Idea - Example, example Transition or link to conclusion of your Christmas speech.

5. Organize or outline the conclusion

The ending of you speech should leave your audience full of hope: looking forward to coming events, united, and with a sense of gratitude.

To finish well, reinforce your theme, summarize your main points and end with strong statement or maybe a quotation. What's ideal is an ending your audience will remember.

6. Organize or outline the introduction

The beginning of your speech:

Acknowledges and welcomes guests to the occasion. (If you have guests of honor, name them.)
Introduces the theme of your speech.
Gives a broad overview of the main points.
And links or transitions into the body of the speech - your most important and first point.

7. Getting from outline to speech

A speech is not a speech until it is spoken out loud to an audience.

If you've followed the first six steps what you've got now is a collection of ideas: sequenced notes covering everything you intend to speak about.

Your next task is to tie your content together from beginning to end so when you say it out loud it flows naturally and can be easily followed by your audience.

There are several ways of doing this.

a) Give a manuscript speech

One way is to use your outline to write the entire speech out paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence, word for word. This is called a manuscript speech.

When you deliver the speech, you will read it.

Use the manuscript method if it makes you feel more comfortable or safer. That's important if this is a first speech, or you are very pushed for time.

Once you've finalized the text you're ready to practice reading it aloud. For you own sake please take the time to do this. A speech badly read is very difficult to listen to and you want your speech remembered for the right reasons.

Besides, delivering a manuscript speech well is a valuable skill to have. Find out how to read a speech effectively .

b) Give an extemporaneous speech using cue cards

Another way is to give your speech extemporaneously. That is to use a mix of carefully scripted and sequenced material and impromptu speaking.

Done well, an extemporaneous speech is naturally flowing and conversational. (My sample office Christmas party speech is an example of one.)

Steps 4, 5 and 6 of your completed outline forms a large chunk of the preparation for one.

How you link all that material together, and the exact words you use is the improvised or impromptu part of the mix.

To interact with your audience and speak freely, without having to use a podium to put outline notes on, use hand held cue cards. This entails transferring your outline to a carefully curated series of numbered and labeled cards.

Each card carries one MAIN point and its supporting details.

When you glance at it, the words and phrases you've put on it act as a prompt and you remember what you wanted to cover.

Rehearsing your speech

Both ways, manuscript and extemporaneous, need practice or rehearsal before you deliver the speech to your audience.

Have a few trusted friends, colleagues or family members listen to it. Get their feedback on content, tone and length, * (2-3 minutes is good.) Make any changes necessary, and run it through again.

* Timing your speech is important. You'll want to make sure it easily fits the time allotted in occasion's program. And that you avoid the embarrassment of going on too long and keeping people from what they want to do! Keep it brief.

8. How, when and where is the speech being delivered?

This eighth step covers the make or break details: the seemingly little things that if overlooked can change an experience from happy to challenging in an instant.

How, when and where you deliver your speech significantly affects aspects of the preparation you need to do.

For example if the setting for your speech is an intimate family gathering around the dinner table you won't need a lectern/podium on a raised stage or a microphone.

But if you're in a hall they might be absolutely necessary to be seen and heard.

Thinking ahead will help you make sure you have gathered together everything you need and have done everything you can in order to give your speech well. For instance:

If you need a mike, you've got it, know how to use it and have tested it.
If you're standing on a stage or dais to give your speech that you've stood on it before the event to make sure the sight lines for those watching are OK and that everyone will see you.
You've made sure the lighting works for you and the audience.
If you're using either cue cards or a complete manuscript, you've practiced with them to make sure you can read them easily. (See how make cue cards and how to read a speech effectively for information about the best readable lay outs.)
You've got a stand to put your notes on, if you need one. You've checked that it's the right height for you and have practiced using it.
If possible, you've scheduled your speech for the beginning of the occasion.
You've saved the glass of Christmas cheer to have after your speech rather than before it and, you've remembered to smile. This is a festive 'we-are-having-a-good-time' speech. You need to look the part! ☺

6 suitable themes for Christmas speeches

1. Gratitude

Be specific about what you are expressing gratitude for, and why. Are you grateful for health, family, workmates, friendship, kindness, favorable events, good times together, challenges, food, your country, the world we share...?

This could be about the joy of giving: giving time, giving thought, giving a helping hand, giving gifts, giving donations...

Hope is feeling positive about looking ahead. You could talk about feeling hopeful regarding new beginnings, plans for the future, resolutions, nurturing creativity or ideas, sowing seeds...

4. Remembrance

Remembrance is way of honoring or respecting the past. It could be recollections of people or events and their significance, highlights of the previous year's events...

5. Family, company or organization

What unites the group of people you are giving this speech to? Are you family? Do you share the same workplace or club?

Use this theme to talk about significant events impacting the lives of group members: births, deaths, triumphs, and challenges...

Or you could talk about the importance of love, belonging, continuity, history, values, hopes... from the point of view of being a member of this group.

Use this theme to emphasize cooperation, community, the achievements made possible through working together, embracing and celebrating differences, humanity, love, compassion and understanding...

Before Christmas, people begin to get ready for Christmas Day. The first step in Christmas preparations is buying gifts for friends, family, children, and coworkers as well as Christmas decorations and food. New outfits are often bought during Christmas. They typically dress in red or white on Christmas Day. So for Christmas Day, women buy dresses in red or white.

Christmas is a time of year that holds a special place in our hearts. It is a time when we come together with our loved ones, exchange gifts, and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. For me, Christmas is a time of reflection and gratitude, a time to think about the blessings in my life and the people who make my life so rich and full.

As a student of Auxilium Convent School, I have been taught the importance of kindness, compassion, and giving to others. This Christmas, I am reminded of the true meaning of the holiday season and the joy that comes from spreading kindness and love to those around us.

Christmas is a time for family, and for me, that means spending time with my parents, grandparents, and cousins. We often have big family dinners, exchange gifts, and sing carols together. It is a time to create new memories and strengthen our bonds as a family.

But Christmas is also a time to think about those who are less fortunate and to give back to our communities in any way we can. This could be as simple as donating toys or food to a local charity or volunteering at a soup kitchen. By spreading joy and hope to others, we are spreading the spirit of Christmas, and creating a more connected and compassionate world.

At Auxilium Convent School, we are taught to be grateful for the blessings in our lives and to use our privilege to help others. This Christmas, I challenge every one of you to think about how you can use your blessings to make a positive impact on the world around you. Whether it's through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading kindness and love, let's all do our part to make this world a better place.

For the midnight mass service, the Catholics gather to prepare many delicacies for the people and families who may not afford to celebrate. They can come and enjoy the feast.

This is a cultural and religious festival for Christians. And the spirit of this day is so universal that everyone joins in on the celebration. 25th December also evokes joy, hope and togetherness. Families and friends get together to celebrate and exchange gifts and cards. In many circles, people celebrate by giving gifts as secret Santa where the recipient must guess who the secret Santa is.

Customized cards for friends and family members are also handmade to make it more special. People greet each other by wishing Merry Christmas.

Today we also have students who are going to sing carols for us, so get ready to sing along. And Santa might be visiting later with tons of surprises.

The celebration continues to hold the high spirits this day brings for 12 days after December 25th, this is called Christmastide. It is an ancient festival, being celebrated for ages. During those days when people celebrated Christmas, they did activities like charity, distributing food, clothes, and money too.

The message is clear – celebrate the festival but do remember to celebrate it together with the community and especially with those who are poor and don’t have resources.

Donate clothes, donate money, share your food, and also share your joy. I believe that though the festival has roots related to Christianity, it is the most non-religious celebration of all. It allows celebrations beyond religious demarcations. It is primarily a festival of joy. Whosoever wants can join in.

This is also one of the greatest reasons for the large acceptability of the festival throughout the globe. Christmas is gaining popularity and is today celebrated by people of other religions as well.

Some of my Hindu friends celebrate Christmas almost in the same way as we do. They cut the cake, decorate the Christmas tree, make delicacies, and invite friends and family over dinner. After all, it is a festival of fun and to make merry.

But remember that whichever way you celebrate; do remember the poor and the needy around you and also be generous to them. Because it is only through the charity that Jesus will smile upon you from heaven above.

The Post Office scandal extends "greatly beyond" faulty Horizon software, according to a lawyer for victims.

Paul Marshall, representing former sub-postmasters, says problems with third party systems in branches, such as ATMs, have been "overlooked".

A 2013 report commissioned by the Post Office, and not made public at the time, states: "Removing the ATM reduces the risk of (the sub-postmaster) being suspended... as does the presence of lottery tickets, (banking) services, and DVLA processing."

It indicates there were issues known to the Post Office with third party systems within branches - separate to Horizon software.

Barrister Paul Marshall believes, as a result, there are "no convictions" secured by the Post Office against any sub-postmaster "that could or should properly be treated as safe".

He says evidence of third party errors, such as ATMs, shows "the scandal extends considerably beyond, greatly beyond, it might be said, the limited focus of bugs in Horizon".

Blanket exoneration legislation being introduced this summer will only quash convictions brought about "by erroneous Horizon evidence".

Mr Marshall asserts that postmasters who have had appeals against convictions rejected by the Court of Appeal may have lost because their offences didn't fall within the "narrow scope" of Horizon issues.
