Free Speech Therapy Tools: Worksheets and Printables
Worksheets and Printables Are Excellent Additions To Your Speech Therapy Regimen.
Our in-depth look at tools for speech therapy continues with a look at free speech therapy tools that you can use at home. Worksheets and Printable Handouts. We have searched the Internet for worksheets that you can use with your child to use as support material in your speech therapy efforts. There are many different worksheets and handouts to choose from, so we have narrowed it down for you and organized these activities into two categories: activities to help build speech and language skills and activities to help build literacy. And, as we continue to emphasize, these are not a substitute for proper evaluation and treatment from an SLP. These handouts are purely to provide your child with hands-on resources for improving articulation, language building and increased literacy at home and to help build a foundation for correct speech patterns and comprehension.
Many sites contain cute printables that seem better suited for a child’s entertainment, rather than actual speech therapy. Our goal with the list below is to provide valuable links and resources for both families and speech therapists looking for engaging and effective material to use as a supplement to current speech therapy treatments. The benefit to using printable handouts as a speech therapy tool, (other than the price), is that you can find worksheets that treat a specific issue of speech therapy or articulation disorder. For example, you can work specifically on the sound of /r/, if that is the only area where your child needs help. Or, help your child recognize the sounds that vowels make.
We continue to learn from you, so we encourage you to share your best sites and printable sources, so that we can all have access to this helpful information.

S sound overview page
What age should my kid be able to say the s sound.
Children typically are able to correctly produce the S sound around 4 years old.
Is the S sound a voiceless sound?
Yes, the S sound is a voiceless (unvoiced) sound.
Is the S sound a fricative?
Yes, the S sound is fricative.
How do I make the S sound?
- Tell the child to smile with their lips close together. We want the lips to be almost touching each other and the top and bottom teeth to be almost touching each other.
- Have the child place the tip of their tongue super close to the bumpy spot (alveolar ridge) of their gums behind their front teeth, but not touching it!
- While still keeping the lips and teeth close to one another and the tip of their tongue close to the bumpy spot, have the child blow out a stream of air.
- Turn off your voice ( voice is the rumbling in your vocal folds. Have your child/client place their hand on their/your neck during the production of “s” and “z”, and have them feel the difference between the two. In the production of “s”, there should be no rumble or voicing. While in the production of “z”, there should be a rumbling or voicing.)
Tricks and Tips for producing the “s” sound:
- To try and emphasize that we don’t want the tongue to be between our teeth during the production of “s”, tell the child that their tongue is a snake and their teeth are the snake’s cage. We don’t want to let the snake out of the cage, so we should not see it during the production of “s”!
- A fun way to practice is to take turns and see who can be the loudest or quietest snake in the jungle.
- Although we don’t want the tip of the tongue to be touching the bumpy spot during the production of “s’, having the child know exactly where the bumpy spot is located is helpful. A fun and tasty way to teach the child where it is production is to put some Nutella, peanut butter, sour candy gel, or any other spreadable food they enjoy on the bumpy ridge. (Rubbing a sucker on the target spot works as well) Once the child has felt the spot a few times, have the child place their tongue super close to the bumpy spot and blow out air.
- If the child has siblings, they might be familiar with the phrase “I’m not touching you” where one of their siblings, in an effort to annoy them, puts their finger or hand close to them and says “I’m not touching you!”. Tell the child to pretend their tongue is the finger and they are trying to get as close to the bumpy ridge as possible without touching it. If we touch the bumpy ridge, we might get in trouble from our parents!
What are the four types of lisps?
The four types of lisps are: interdental lisp, lateral lisp, dentalized lisp, and palatal lisp.
What is the difference between S and Z?
The S and Z sound are produced exactly the same with one exception. The difference between Z and S is that the S sound is voiceless and the Z sound is a voiced sound.

Public Speaking Activities
5 fun speech games to build skills and confidence.
By: Susan Dugdale | Last modified: 10-26-2023
There are five public speaking activities on this page, along with numerous spinoffs.
Their principal purpose is to develop speech fluency and confidence through fun!
You'll find they are easily adaptable to groups of all ages and skill levels: from newcomers to advanced.
I've used them all and know they work. People become so enjoyably engrossed in them, they forget to be fearful!
1. Interview Introductions
Interview Introductions are a great way to break the ice with a new group of people. The exercise has them finding out about each other and then introducing the person they interviewed to the whole group.
As it's a lot less threatening or scary to talk about someone else rather than yourself, you'll find people respond really positively as they're generally eager to represent the person they interviewed well.
Instructions
- Divide your group into pairs.
- Each person interviews the other in turn. The information gained forms the basis of a brief introduction speech they'll give to the whole group when the interviewing process is complete.
- Ask them to find out their partner's name, where they live/work, what hobbies they have, what their favorite book, film, song...is, what they're most proud of (an achievement perhaps), what they hope for from the class, something funny that happened in their childhood, where they go for holidays, what they think about the latest local issue ... Obviously they can't expect to cover all of that in detail inside the brief time they spend talking with each other. One or two interesting points is enough!
- Establish a time limit for the interviews. I've found 10 minutes works well. Keep track of the time and call change at the halfway point, 5 minutes, to ensure both people get an opportunity to be interviewed and to interview.
- When the group comes back together the introductions begin: "This is Mary from Taupo. When she's not working for the Social Welfare Department as a community social worker she's collecting stamps. She says part of their charm is that they don't answer back and are quiet!"
2. Image Starters
Picture prompts or image starters are great for sparking imaginative storytelling and conversations.
Either use my ready-made printable file of 40 picture prompts , (which you can find out more about by clicking the link), or gather up a collection of your own to use.
You'll need interesting images/photos from magazines or newspapers - enough for everybody to have one each and then a few spare.
Place them face down and have everybody pick one.
Using the image as a prompt, what can they share about it?
Questions to get started are:
- Where is this photo/image from? (And the answer doesn't have to be true - merely plausible! Encourage imaginative creativity.)
- What's happening in this photo/picture?
- What feelings does the image evoke?
- Is there a season or time associated with it?
- What happened after or before the photo was taken?
5 activities using image starters
If you'd like specific instructions for five different activities based around images you'll find them here: picture prompts for impromptu speeches .
They range from introductory 'show and tell', like the starter questions above, to more advanced. There are solo as well as group activities.
3. For and Against
'For and Against' encourages flexibility: the ability to see a topic from opposing sides.
A speaker has 30 seconds to talk 'for' a topic and then another 30 seconds to speak 'against' it.
Prepare and print out a selection of controversial speech topics. You'll need one per person.
Put the topics into a non-see through bag. Have each speaker select their topic when it's their turn to speak.
Ideally what's wanted is at least two or three good points supporting both sides: for and against.
Time the speech. Call start, the half way point and, stop.
Sample topics:
- money is the root of all evil
- a country gets the government it deserves
- ' green ' politics are just the current fashion
- pets in apartments should be banned
- marriage is essentially a business contract
- 'Religion is the opiate of the masses' : Karl Marx
- poverty is a state of mind
- euthanasia is unjustifiable
- global warming is media hype
- cloning animals should be banned
- animal testing is immoral
For variation split your group into pairs and extend the time limit to 1 - 2 minutes. One person takes the 'for' position, and other takes the 'against'.
More 1 minute speech practice

4. The Object of my Affection
Gather up a collection of small objects, enough for one per speaker. For example: a vintage toy car, a can of sardines, a hair ribbon, an old black and white photographic portrait, a pair of baby shoes ....
Put all of them into a non-see through bag.
Each speaker puts their hand into the bag and pulls out an object. Whatever they get forms the basis of their 1 - 2 minute speech.
Ideas to help the speakers get started:
- This ... { insert the name of whatever it is the speaker has in their hand } saved my life. It happened like this...
- Whenever I see a ...{ insert the name of whatever it is the speaker has in their hand } it reminds me of the time I...
- I collect ...{i nsert the name of whatever it is the speaker has in their hand } and this one is the prize of my collection. It used to belong to ...
5. Conducted Speech
This is a group public speaking activity. It is noisy, effective and outrageously good fun!
Select a tongue twister from this page of diction exercises eg. " Sister Susie sat on the seashore sewing shirts for soldiers ".
Divide your class into groups of four. Three in each group will be the speakers and the fourth, the conductor.
The speakers repeat the tongue twister responding to the conductor's direction. He/she can make them go faster or slower, louder or quieter. The conductor could even decide to make it a round by staggering when each person begins!
The goal of the exercise is to practice articulation coupled with vocal variety ie. speech rate and volume.
It also teaches cooperation and focus, or concentration. Let your mind wander, and it's game over! You've lost it, not only for yourself but your group as well.
Swap the conductor role around to give everybody a turn.
Once everybody is familiar with the activity, give the groups turns at demonstrating their prowess to the whole class. They'll love seeing and hearing each other perform. ☺

Objective: Improve language through rhythm and repetition.
Music is one of the most fun speech therapy ideas. Choose simple songs that feature repetitive phrases and easy melodies. Sing along with your toddler, encouraging them to join in. Repetition of these catchy tunes helps reinforce language patterns and boosts memory.
Objective: Develop vocal skills through playful sound imitation.
Animal sounds are not just fun; they’re educational. This game is a hit in toddler speech therapy games, where mimicking animals’ noises—like a cow’s “moo” or a cat’s “meow”—helps toddlers practice different vocal pitches and sounds. Engage with your child by taking turns to guess the animal.
Objective: Expand vocabulary.
‘Name That Item’ is a straightforward yet powerful speech therapy activity for three-year-olds . Gather various everyday objects and place them in front of your toddler one at a time. Ask them to name each object. This not only builds their vocabulary but also enhances object recognition skills. It’s a simple and effective way to help them connect words with their corresponding objects, fostering cognitive and language development.
Objective: Stimulate motor skills and sound production.
They learn to control their breath as they blow bubbles, which is crucial for speech clarity. Encourage them to pop the bubbles while saying “pop” or asking for “more.” This activity supports motor skills through blowing and popping and introduces new sounds and words, making it a favorite among speech games.
Objective: Foster language through structured play.
Stacking blocks is a dynamic part of speech and language therapy. As you and your toddler build towers or create designs, narrate each action. Say things like, “Now I’m adding a blue block on top!” Encourage your child to make specific requests, such as asking for a certain color or size. This interaction helps them learn to use language to express their needs and desires while they play.
Objective: Enhance spatial reasoning and descriptive language.
Puzzles are a fantastic tool for developing both language and cognitive skills. Sit with your toddler and tackle a simple puzzle together. Discuss each piece, describing its colors and shapes, and discuss where it might fit on the board. This practice improves their spatial reasoning and enriches their descriptive vocabulary, making it one of the best speech therapy games.
Objective: Improve breath control, which is vital for speech production.
Feather blowing is an excellent toddler speech therapy exercise focusing on breath control, an essential aspect of speech clarity. Have your toddler try to blow a feather across a table or the floor, using only their breath. Guide them to take deep breaths and control the exhale. This activity is fun and teaches them how to regulate their breath, which is crucial for speaking clearly and confidently.
Objective: Build prepositional and spatial language.
Turn learning into an adventure with a game of hide-and-seek using your toddler’s favorite toys. Hide objects around the room and describe their locations using prepositions like “under,” “behind,” or “next to.” This 2-year-old speech therapy activity encourages toddlers to understand and use spatial terms, enhancing their grasp of language and environment.
Objective: Develop cognitive and language skills.
Matching games are excellent activities for improving speech and overall cognitive abilities. Use cards with images of common items or various objects. As you play, discuss the attributes of each item, such as their colors, shapes, and sizes. Encouraging your toddler to articulate these features enhances their vocabulary and helps them connect words and meanings.
11. Follow the Leader
Objective: Encourage imitation of actions and sounds.
“Follow the Leader” is a playful and interactive way to develop communication skills. Perform simple actions or make sounds and have your toddler mimic you. This activity makes learning fun and improves their ability to listen and replicate sounds, which is crucial in early speech development.
12. Interactive Storytelling
Objective: Engage multiple senses for comprehensive language learning.
Storytelling is an engaging way to develop language skills. Make it interactive by using different voices for characters, adding facial expressions, and incorporating hand gestures. Ask your toddler to guess what happens next or mimic the characters’ actions or sounds. This immersive approach stimulates their imagination and encourages them to use language in varied and creative ways.
13. Simple Commands
Objective: Practice comprehension and execution of verbal instructions.
Integrating simple commands into daily routines is a straightforward way to enhance your toddler’s understanding and responsiveness. Commands like “Please bring me the ball” or “Can you touch your nose?” help toddlers associate actions with words, fostering comprehension and verbal skills.
14. Rhythm and Rhyme
Objective: Improve phonemic awareness and verbal memory.
Engage your toddler with simple rhyming games or rhythm clapping. These activities are not just entertaining—they are also powerful tools in speech therapy. They help toddlers recognize sound patterns, essential for developing reading and speech abilities. The repetitive nature of rhymes enhances memory, making this a fun and effective learning tool.
15. Mystery Bag
Objective: Enhance sensory vocabulary and descriptive skills.
The “Mystery Bag” is a simple yet effective tool in our toolkit of speech therapy activities for toddlers at home. Fill a soft, opaque bag with various small, safe household items. Have your toddler reach in and pick one item without looking. Encourage them to feel, squeeze, and manipulate the item and describe it using words like “smooth,” “bumpy,” “cool,” or “flexible.”
