W.B. Yeats Sample Guide: Personal Reflection and Public Commentary

The marking scheme directs examiners to reward references to personal and public reflections conveyed through various images, symbols and descriptive details, themes of politics, nature, transience, art and beauty, effective use of language, etc.
Yeats is one of the most widely quoted poets. This is a testament to his captivating language and timeless themes. The centenary of the Easter Rising calls for a re-examination of his work in a new light. Yeats’s passion for his country and for peace is reflected through many different angles in his poems. He was unreserved in poetic portrayals of his inner conflicts and sorrows. I will explore this statement in depth using the poems The Wild Swans at Coole, Sailing to Byzantium, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, September 1913, Easter 1916, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death, Stare’s Nest by My Window and The Second Coming.

Is Yeat's very likely to come up this year?
Hi, It's tough (impossible) to predict anything like this. It's tempting to think that he is likely to come up, it being 100 years since 1916. Furthermore, he isn't on the HL syllabus in 2017 or 2018. So if he doesn't appear in 2016, he won't have been on the LC for three years in a row… However, strictly speaking, every one of the eight has an equal chance of being on the paper, and that's all we really know. William Butler Yeats
Born into the Angl0-Irish landowning class to a father who was himself a celebrated painter, Yeats was obsessed with the Irish Cultural revival. He was obsessed with the idea of establishing and giving voice to an Irish identity, both cultural and political, which was distinctly different from the rest of Britain.
Yeats’ poetry helps us to examine what it means to be Irish; it offers us an insight into our history; it provokes around the morality of blood sacrifice; offers a beautiful insight into the beauty of the Irish landscape and a desire to retreat from the modern world; it explores the difficult process of aging and physical decay and seeks – and ultimately achieves – immortality, through art.
