A Bad Manager and a Good Manager Essay

Introduction, the role of manager in the organization success, the comparison of the good and the bad manager, works cited.

The quality of management is the vital aspect of the organization success. It is not only a question of the whole system of management effectiveness but also of the role of the individual managers who coordinate the work of the departments or the organization as a whole.

Management is defined as “the organization and coordination of the activities of the business in order to achieve defined objectives” (“Management” n.pag.)

According to the joined study of the representatives of Stanford University, McKinsey & Company and Center of Economic Performance at London School of Economics, good management is directly related to the good performance and the improvement in practice should be a priority for the firms (Bloom et al. 8).

The manager as the coordinator of the organization work is responsible for strategy realization. That is why he is responsible for doing his best to maximize the performance of the firm.

The qualities which a good manager should possess can be divided into the personal and business ones. Among the personal qualities the following ones can be emphasized: self-motivation, integrity, dependability/reliability, optimism, confidence, calmness, flexibility (“25 Qualities” n.pag.).

Self-motivation plays an important role in the achievement of success. It is something that makes an individual going ahead despite all the obstacles. Self-motivation means making efforts to realize your goal and making them with the persistence and eagerness. The manager should keep himself going and motivate others to do the job (“25 Qualities” n.pag.).

Integrity is the quality which characterizes the manager who has a clear understanding of the life norms and principles and feels themselves confident in the adherence to them. An integral personality will not hesitate in the situation when the difficult decision should be made. The integrity also means the understanding of what is right doing and what is wrong doing.

Dependability/reliability means the ability of the manager to take the responsibility and to understand the importance of fulfilling the task with the high quality. A good manager is a kind of person the success of the organization depends on and they should realize this responsibility.

A good manager should have the optimistic view. Optimism will inspire the subordinates and will support the comfortable working environment.

A good manager should be confident meaning that they will not hesitate in the decision making and will make the decisions consciously.

The confidence is closely connected to calmness. It is one more quality of a good manager which gives him an ability to be self-controlled and not to allow the situation controlling them.

Flexibility assumes the ability of the manager to go beyond the frameworks of formalities and to think creatively. The flexible thinking is important for the problem-solving.

There are also business qualities of a good manager. The following ones can be marked out: industry knowledge, knowing when to delegate, organization, basic money management, business hierarchy, legal implications (“25 Qualities” n.pag.).

Undoubtedly, a good manager should be aware of the situation in the industry. They should possess the information about its trends and future prospects in order to know whether the firm development is in line with the general trend and whether it is important to find new markets.

Knowing when to delegate is an important quality of a good manager. It allows building an effective team within the organization and fulfilling all the tasks in time.

Organization implies the ability to create a plan and to implement it with minimum cost.

Basic money management is also crucial. A good manager has at least primary knowledge of finance giving them an ability to coordinate cash movements.

Business hierarchy is something which a good manager should support. The hierarchy contributes to the better organization making the firm a well-coordinated whole where every employee understands their responsibilities.

Legal implications also represent an important element of the effective management. A good manager should have knowledge of laws regulating the firm activity in order to ensure that the firm does not engage in the illegal activities.

Taking into consideration all above mentioned, it becomes clear which qualities a bad manager does not possess. A bad manager can be described as a person lacking knowledge of the industry in which his firm operates as well as the applicable laws or finance basics. They are not able to delegate and to support business hierarchy.

A manager who does not have a vision and lacks self-motivation for achieving the goals of the organization is hardly to be described as a good one. The same can be said about the other features. In general, a bad manager is the one who lacks one or several qualities listed above.

In order to sum up all above mentioned, it should be said that the management is an important aspect of the organization performance. The qualities which a good manager should possess can be divided into two main groups: the personal features and the business ones. If a manager does not possess some, he or she will hardly to be effective.

Good Managers vs Bad Managers: Which One Do YOU Think You Are?

Good managers vs Bad Managers: Which One Do YOU Think You Are?

A manager is a senior member of staff who provides the support, guidance and resources necessary to lead teams to success . You would have heard of the saying, “good employees leave managers, not companies”. So, what is the difference between a good manager vs bad manager? Put simply, what separates a good manager from a bad one, is that the former puts efforts to build a work culture that trusts, while the latter contributes to workplace toxicity.

One of my favorite Peter Drucker quotes is “management is about doing things right; and leadership is about doing the right things”. Guess which one screams good manager? It's not that a manager’s lifelong ambition is to be a bad one. But the promotion to authority and the increased workload and responsibilities can alter a manager’s personality.

In this blog

1. difference between a good manager and a bad manager.

Before we dive into it, it's important to remember that no two managers think and act alike. And they may not always see eye-to-eye on the same subject.

At the end of the day, managers are only human. A good manager is someone who is well-acquainted with their team. They are approachable, and rely on their experiential instincts and situational judgment to guide team members. They also recognize the strengths and weaknesses of individuals. A good manager involves their team in decisions that impact them, and hears out suggestions. They are open to feedback and believe in giving members the autonomy to get the job done. Here are some characteristics of a good manager vs bad managers -

1.1. Good Manager

a good manager and a bad manager essay

1.1.1. A Good Motivator

Good managers encourage people to come forward. They motivate people to ideate and brainstorm which serves as the catalyst for process efficiency and product innovation.

1.1.2. Assertive

A good manager works on his or her leadership ability and communication skills. They know the differences between responsibility, authority and accountability, and can assert without coming off as domineering.

1.1.3. Sets Clear Expectations

A good manager shares goals with the team and keeps them in the loop. They convey expectations before work starts so that members can get a clarity on the deliverables.

1.1.4. Accountable

Managers not only keep members accountable but also hold themselves accountable if things don’t go according to the plan. They don’t let members take the fall for them.

1.1.5. Communicative

Good managers communicate with their teams, and standardize follow-ups and check-ins. They bring everybody together, whether the workers are remote, collocated or distributed, and ensure team dynamics stay healthy and collaborative.

1.1.6. Trustworthy and Transparent

when it comes to good manager vs bad manager, every good manager knows that trust is a two-way street, and is intentional about cultivating it. They elicit this trust by being transparent about expectations and concerns.

1.1.7. Strong Delegation skills

Managers who follow the  delegation process steps do so with the intent to be more efficient. Through observation, they know the potential of their team. Rather than attempting to do everything themselves, they recognize functions, tasks and decisions that their workforce can take up.

1.8. Productive

A good manager does not wish to be a fly on the wall for all things team-related. They know when to step in, and when to take a step back. They leave the execution to the team after assigning members to various tasks and jobs. He or she uses up their time to review issues to inflight workflows, respond to requests, and plan out goals, outcomes and project schedules.

1.9. Appreciative

Appreciating a member and giving credit where it's due establishes a manager as a good leader. It shows workers that well-performing teams are noticed and recognized, and encourages others to follow suit.

1.2. A Bad Manager

a good manager and a bad manager essay

1.2.1 Encourages Office Toxicity

What is an indicator of a good manager vs bad manager? The latter constantly bully or harass everyone into doing things their way. They don’t intervene when they see bullying behavior and are either unwilling, or unable to apply conflict management techniques to amicably resolve disagreements.

1.2.2.Fails to Communicate Consistently

A bad manager does not provide announcements, explanations and updates to the team but expects the team to always inform them. The decisions they take tend to blindside the team, and creates more confusion over responsibilities and accountability.

1.2.3. Unpredictable

Bad managers start to develop a superiority complex and do not feel the need to justify changes in decisions or processes to their team. They are unpredictable and defensive when questioned. This stems from the fact that their focus is on asserting authority than on building relationships. They tend to disrespect low-level workers, forgetting that they too were in that position not long back.. Respect is a must

1.2.4. Indulges in Blame Games

When things go wrong, a bad manager’s first instinct is to blame something or someone else. They deny any incompetence on their part and tend to protect their own-interests. Rather than create an environment for individual accountability that gives them a clearer picture of what is happening, they end up holding the entire team accountable. This affects performance appraisals adversely, with members experiencing anxiety over a possible demotion, pay cut or bias .

1.2.5 .Micromanaging

Bad managers exhibit micromangerial tendencies. Micromanagement stems from deep-seated mistrust and anxiety. Such managers feel that this is the only way to ensure things get done, and insist on frequent updates. They also take decisions unilaterally and do not feel the need to keep communication two-way . As a result, most decisions catch teams unawares. Over time, employees feel underappreciated, and over-scrutinized.

1.2.6. Discourages Innovation

Another distinguishing factor for a good manager vs bad manager is that bad managers are opposed to new ideas, fearing that would be upsetting the processes already instituted early on. While some may encourage ideas, they may not necessarily act on any of it. Such behavior kills the creativity needed for innovation .

1.2.7. Cannot Stay Objective Long-term

Bad managers make it all about them and cannot stay objective long-term. They tend to play favorites and have a bias for, or against certain members, which again creates discord amongst members. They nitpick on the team, but forget to praise and credit efforts where it's due.

1.2.8. Averse to Learning from Others

Bad managers dislike learning from someone else, especially if that person is new to the firm, or junior in position. Such managers are averse to mentoring programs where the roles of mentor and mentee are flipped. They tend to value and prioritize their own experiential judgment over that of others.

2. Characteristics of a Good Manager and a Bad Manager

a good manager and a bad manager essay

In order to pick out a good manager from a bad one, we tend to think that all managers behave a certain way all the time. The truth is, good managers can have bad tendencies, and vice versa. No manager is any particular extreme.

That being said, there are a few identifiable traits that are consistent with strong leadership ability. A good manager vs bad manager, for instance, is someone the team feels comfortable reporting to. Members who interact with such a manager enjoy hashing out ideas, participating in discussions and pooling in their knowledge and experience. Such teams contribute to the business and tend to remain driven, competent and productive.

A good manager can read the room and is able to observe how team members work together. They can settle workplace disputes, and step in when there’s a conflict that’s impacting work progress and demoralizing the rest of the department. Good managers are more intentional in their efforts to create a supportive, safe and healthy work environment. Good managers not only know their team well enough to give constructive feedback , but also invite feedback on their leadership ability from the teams they are managing.

There are different types of ‘bad’ managers. The adjective does not imply that they are incompetent or unqualified. It's a lot more nuanced than that. There are those who simply do what they are told, which includes micromanaging their employees. Such bad managers are ultimately just puppets controlled by their superiors. Then there are managers who are unable to give feedback, either out of a lack of context, or unwillingness to understand what individual team members do. There are managers who are highly knowledgeable and experienced, but would rather do their previous job than supervise the people who are now doing it.

 3. What are Five Qualities or Skills a Manager Should Have?

a good manager and a bad manager essay

A manager should be a good conversationalist which means being able to listen just as well as they speak. They should be able to take decisions and stick to it, bearing in mind any and all consequences and rewards. A good manager is also good at delegation, and is comfortable assigning accountability, and responsibility to those they identify as suitable for the task.

The five qualities a manager should have are

  • Interpersonal skills and communication
  • Foresight and adaptability
  • Decision making
  • Objectivity
  • Credibility At the end of the day, managers manage people , not jobs. And it's not too late for a bad manager to turn over a new leaf. All it takes is self-introspection. If you recognize some or all of the signs listed in this post, then it's time to consider making conscious efforts to overcome unfavorable personality traits.

Remember, that reputations last, and positions don’t. So while you still are in the hot seat, how would you like to be remembered? let us know your views on good manager vs bad manager.

4.1. What is the basic difference between good managers vs bad managers?

The basic difference between a good managers vs bad managers is that the former one puts efforts to build a perfect work culture, while the latter contributes to toxicity in the workplace.

The position of a manager is become more and more common these days. As companies are becoming bigger, so is the number of employees. From the first glance, it may seem that telling people what to do and making sure they do it is quite simple. However, gaining the needed respect for others to listen to you is the difficult part. It is the communication skills, performance and approach to coworkers that differentiates a good manager from a poor one. Something connected with communication skills is personal attitude to everyone. People are different and approaches to each and every one must also have its particularities. Some people need to be told things directly, other prefer to receive hints. Some need more praise, others needs less, while another group all together just needs to be left alone in order to be able to do one’s job well. You simply cannot deal with everyone in the same way. Workers are not robots and they want their manager to understand that. Just as any human beings, they have their personality and identity. It is vital that a manager respects their choices and communicates to his or her employees in the necessary way. The difference between a good and bad manager also lies within the approach to others. Treat others they way you want to be treated may not always be right. What is convenient and understandable for you, may not be so for someone else. Nevertheless, you must start with yourself when building the needed skills to succeed as a manager. The best way to lead is by setting good examples. People are a lot likely to follow a person, who knows what he or she is doing and does it well. It inspires everyone to do better, to set goals and reach them. A good manager is also a motivator. He may not possess all the skills that his subordinates have, but he must be good at something. In order to be respected, one must have something to be respected for. A manager that constantly makes bad choices and wrong decisions will not be respected and, consequently, obeyed. A bad manger may think that it is his team’s job to do this or that well. But he is mistaken. As a leader, one must understand that everyone contributes to the team and together and only together can goals be reached. This requires mutual respect and value for every teammate. A good manager needs to show the correct ways of behavior for others to follow. He needs to be trustworthy, open, fair and honest. Only be exemplifying these characters himself, may be expect to see them in his subordinates. A person of poor character, who does not respect others, constantly makes excuses and avoids crucial subject is simply a bad manager. This person will never be able to lead anyone and nobody will listen to him. Because even if someone does reach a high position in a company he or she still needs to prove himself worthy of it. A good manager differs from a bad one by communication skills, self-performance and approach to others. Only be being able to communicate successfully to everyone will goals be reached. It is simply impossible to get anything done together, if the team does not understand what is required. We work in a society which encourages individuality. Keeping this in mind, one must find that personal approach to everyone. And only be setting the right example, can one gain respect and thus become a good and successful manager, respected by his subordinates and valued by his superiors.

What Makes a Good Manager Essay

Everybody knows that a boss is a person who directs employees to perform their duties in a proper way in order to achieve the major organizational goals. However, the word “boss” can have both positive and negative characteristics. Any employee, who has got an experience of working with both good and bad bosses in the workplace, can easily characterize both of them. A good boss and a bad boss have very much in common, but at the same time they have a lot of differences which are concluded in their personal characteristics.

A good boss is always a good listener because he is ready to learn about the employees needs and meet them. Besides listening skills, a good boss has good communication skills. He is always ready to keep in touch with each team member individually and to keep them informed of any changes and innovations in the process of work. (Good Boss vs Bad Boss, 2009, para.1) Moreover, a good boss is a person who can become a mentor for his employees, the one who is ready to share his experience with others in the workplace. In addition, a good boss is the one who is empowering, inspirational and empathic in relation to his employees. He is ready to motivate the team members to perform their duties better and to increase organization’s productivity. (Brown, 2008, para.3)

A bad boss is the one who talks too much, but doesn’t listen to his employees’ ideas and meet their needs. The working process of a bad boss is built on commands and controls: “Bad bosses waste too much energy on employee makeovers”. (Brown, 2008, para.4) In this case, employees often lose trust in this person and fail to perform their duties in a proper way. Moreover, he treats his employees as subordinates, but not equally. (Good Boss vs Bad Boss, 2009, para.2) It means that the employees have no opportunity to express their progressive ideas concerning this or that issue. A bad boss is the one who believes that he knows everything and his employees know nothing. A bad boss will never share his experience with other team members. Moreover, he tries to hire weak candidates who are less qualifies, less initiative, and who will never substitute him. (Brown, 2008, para.4)

Both good boss and bad boss have the same functions in the workplace – they should direct and motivate the employees to perform their duties in a proper way and to achieve the major organizational goals. Planning, controlling, directing, organizing and staffing are the key functions of effective management. (Functions of Management, 2011, para.2) It means that any boss should use his skills and abilities in order to be an effective leader of the organization. However, it depends on the personal characteristics of the boss if he is a good or bad leader. Both good and bad bosses hold high position in the organization, get higher wages and should be treated with respect. (Beck, 2008, para.5)

To sum up, both good and bad bosses do have common functions and responsibilities in the workplace, but they have also a lot of differences which are concluded in their relation to work and employees, and their personal traits of character.v

Good and Bad Manager

Businesses and the importance of leadership:.

Businesses, from their office environment to the workplace, are solely extensions of the personality leading them (Clarke, 27). I would like to be engaged with a manager who listens and allows exchange of information between all parties in the business enviro. A manager who humbly understand and listens to what is being said to them and crafts a meaning reply will pledge that we have a smooth working environment thus prosperity of the business (Clarke, 38). I would also want to work with a manager that has a good foresight because I will be able to know where the business is headed and the part I will play in that journey. This will help me know the purpose of the business and the role I have in it.

Qualities of an Effective Leader:

I want to be a type of leader who is a controller and relies on perfection and extreme control so as to ensure that my team is perfect and works towards the goal of the business. I would also like to be a leader who does not fire my workers regularly without valid reasons. I believe that as a leader it is good to treat those under you the very same you would like to be treated if you were in the same situation as them. This would help me move my team forward in a productive way that will help them maintain their dignity.

The Importance of Supervision:

In summary, the responsibilities and the type of job impact my answer in that, the business workforce needs supervision so as to work towards the business goals. Leaving them without control will mean that the work force will be reluctant and thus the profits of the business would decrease.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brent Suter (31) delivers a pitch in the seventh inning of an MLB baseball

© Kareem Elgazzar/The Enquirer / USA TODAY

The Good, Bad and Ugly From the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 Loss to New York Mets

The Reds fall to 5-4 on the season.

  • Author: Caleb Sisk

In this story:

The Reds lost the final game of the series against the New York Mets on Sunday by a score of 3-1. This was the first series loss for the Reds this season. They fall to 5-4 on the year.

Here's the good, bad and ugly from Sunday's game:

Brent Suter tossed three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. He came in for the injured Tejay Antone. Suter kept the score close and ate some innings, which allowed the Reds to stay within striking distance.

The hitting was putrid. Jake Fraley and Will Benson often don’t play against lefties, however it might be worth putting them on the field regardless of who's on the mound.

Elly De La Cruz had a hit in every game this season until Sunday. His 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season was snapped.

Losing the first series of the year always stings especially against a team that has struggled early on.

Andrew Abbott wasn't awful, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings, but the offense didn't give him or the bullpen any run support.

The injury Antone suffered was in his elbow which he has had tons of issues with in the past. He was only able to throw one pitch before leaving the game. Hopefully it isn't as serious as it looked.

First time here at this establishment and I'm a reviewer for Trip Advisor, Yelp and Google. The "older" cashier was distraught over an order that she 'missed' and ignored customers waiting in life. I was customer #3 when I walked in. After watching her complain with another employee about her missing the phone-in order, she 100% ignored all of us in line. As customer #4 entered behind me, customer #1 walked out. THEN came Lauren whom was actually putting the pizzas in the oven and her Marco's work shirt was covered in her hard work (dough residue). SHE was the saving grace for this restaurant. While all the other employees were milling around doing their 'thing', Lauren saw us waiting, stopped putting the pizza in the oven and began taking our orders. ALL of our orders. If I had saw 2 employees at any given restaurant with Lauren's flare for 'getting it done', I'd weep with joy. I would've given this restaurant a highly dissatisfied/poor rating were it not for Lauren. I did get a gluten free cauliflower crust Pizza which was very good which further caused me NOT to give this restaurant a bad rating. I had ordered it online and was there to simply pick it up. The crust was crisp and perfectly done, the vegetables I ordered on top were fresh. I'll definitely order these from this restaurant since I was recently placed on a gluten free diet by my doctor. So...I'll give Marco's Pizza Crystal River a "satisfied" rating due to Lauren and one very good pie. The staff needs customer service training however, because just ONE employee does NOT make a restaurant. The customer has GOT to come first above any 'issues' an employee is facing personally. That is the bottom line. Management: DO have a talk with your team OR make Lauren the assistant manager. She should be! I'll be back and we'll see what happens next time. PS: I changed the review from a 3 to a 4 star due to the owner, Mr. Z. Gregory, who took charge of the situation. That is one of the few times a manager has reached out to remedy a problem so I'm sure that this Marco's will reach my 5 star status with a little tweaking of the personnel. It IS one fine pizza pie, after all.
