Another milestone of this era was the introduction of Limited Overs cricket in England. Earlier, only Test cricket was played, a game of five days that was too time-consuming. This gave birth to Limited Overs Cricket. In this, the number of overs was reduced to 100, 50 overs for each side batting and bowling. This format of cricket is also termed One-day cricket. The first ever One-day international match was played between England and Australia on 5 th January 1971 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia.

Later in 1975, the governing body of cricket International Cricket Council (ICC) launched the 50- Overs Cricket World Cup due to the growing popularity of this format of cricket.

Cricket in the 2000s

With the coming of the 21 st century, cricket has become one of the most popular games throughout the world. Many nations were playing this game at the international level. Only a few teams earned the accreditation of Test playing because it required specific statistical criteria to be fulfilled by the ICC. The teams that were given permission to play Test matches during this period were Bangladesh in 2000, Ireland, and Afghanistan in 2018.

In 2003, a new format of cricket was introduced at the county level in England that reduced both the overs and the duration of the game. The game became short, and it was the T20 format of cricket. In this, both the teams get 20 overs each, and the game lasts only 3 hours. The first T20 cricket game was played between England and New Zealand women's teams on 5 th August 2004. The popularity of this format rose more rapidly than the One-day format. Cricket fans loved this format because of its fast-moving gameplay. In 2007, within three years of its international introduction, ICC launched the T20 International World Cup, which was played in South Africa.

Gameplay and Types of Equipment

Playing field.

The game of cricket is played on a big circular or oval ground, with a diameter of 136m to 150m for men. For women, it usually varies between 110m to 130m. As per the ICC bye-laws, the minimum playing area for a classic Test match should have a diameter of 137.16m.

In the centre of the ground, a rectangular flat strip of 22 yards long and 305cm wide is called pitch. On the pitch, three wooden stumps called wickets are rooted at both ends. The surface of the pitch is hard and has tiny grasses.

On the pitch, four types of white markings are known as the crease. These are bowling crease, popping crease, and two return creases on either side.

Bowling crease - It is the line on which wickets are aligned vertically.
Popping crease - This line lies in front of the bowling crease four feet away from the wickets. It is the crease a batsman has to cross to complete a run.
Return crease - The line is used as a reference for a wide ball. Two return creases are drawn at the right angle of the popping line. The minimum length is 8 ft, and there is no limit for the maximum size, and it goes even beyond the bowling line.

The types of equipment used in the game

Bat It is the primary equipment for cricket. Bat is used to hit the ball to make runs. It is a flat wooden blade with a cylindrical handle made of white willow wood. A bat's maximum width and length are 4.25 inches wide and 38 inches long. Bats usually weigh around 1.1 to 1.4 kg .
Ball The ball is a hard solid spherical object with leather covering and thrown by the bowler, and the batter hits it with the bat to score runs. In cricket, two types of balls are used, a white ball in limited overs cricket and a red ball in Test cricket. The trend of the pink ball has also been started in limited overs format. The thrower of the ball is known as a bowler.
Wickets Wickets are three cylindrical wooden rods pierced on the pitch with two bails on the top. The batter, while batting, has to defend the wicket from hitting with the ball, and the bowler targets to hit the wicket with the ball by throwing it toward the batter.
Protective Gears Various types of equipment are used to protect the players from any injury during the game. Some of them are jockstraps to guard the crouch area, abdominal guards, helmets, leg pads, thigh guards, arm guards, elbow guards, chest guards , and hand gloves for the batter and wicketkeeper. These protective gears are essential in cricket because the ball is thrown at over 100kmph, which can cause fatal injury to the players. Being hit by the ball has resulted in serious injuries and even the death of players.

Batting is the part of the game in which one player with the bat, a batsman (in male cricket) or batter (in general), faces the ball thrown by the bowler. The batter tries to hit the ball to score runs and, at the same time, defends the ball from hitting the stumps. There are two batters on the field from the batting side at a time.

The batter plays different shots, which are explicitly named based on the region of the playing area and the way of hitting the ball. Some of them are cover drive, square drive, cut, late cut, hook, on drive, off drive, straight drive, pull, square cut, leg glance, and late cut .

In bowling, the player who does bowling is known as a bowler. The bowler's function is to primarily throw the ball toward the batter with the target to hit the stumps. The bowler's mindset is to get the batter out by any legitimate method by giving the minimum number of runs. There are different bowling styles in which a bowler is specialized, like fast bowling, spin bowling, medium-pace bowling, etc.

Various ways a bowler dismisses a batter are clean bold, catch out, run-out, lbw, and hit-wicket.

Fielding is one of the most critical components of the game, which is done by all team members present on the field. It can be regarded as the co-component of bowling because it is done when a team bowls against the opponent. In this, all the players are assigned specified places where they try to stop the ball or take catches when the ball comes to them after being hit by the batter. It is an act of saving runs for the team or stopping another group from scoring runs.

The fielders are placed in specified places, like slips, point, cover, mid-off, mid-on, mid-wicket, square leg, the long-off, long-on, third man, fine leg, extra cover, gully, silly point, etc.

There are umpires whose work is to judge the game. Two umpires on the field monitor the game and validate the game as per rules, like giving scores, out decisions, wide and no-ball decisions, etc. There is also a third umpire, known as a TV umpire, who gives decisions that are not clear to the field umpires, like close run-outs, unclear catches, etc.

An over consists of six balls to be bowled by a bowler. A bowler throws the ball six times in one go, completing an over. In a 50-over match, a single bowler bowls for a maximum of 10 overs, whereas in Test cricket, there is no limit of overs to be bowled by the bowler. In the fresh T20 format, a single bowler's maximum limit of over is four overs.

Structure of the Game

In Limited Over Cricket

The game of cricket is played between two teams. Each team has eleven members, of which some are batters, some are bowlers, and some are those who do both batting and bowling; they are known as all-rounders. There is also one member who is specialized in fielding behind the stumps and is termed a wicketkeeper.

The game is played in two halves, and each half is termed an inning. In each inning, one team does batting to score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball, being bowled by the opponent, and setting the target for the other team. In the same inning, the other team does bowling and tries to stop the batters from scoring runs by fielding and dismissing the ten batters of the opponent team.

In another inning, the team that bowled in the first half does batting and tries to achieve the target run set by the opponent, which is one run more than what the opponent has scored. The bowling team of this inning defends the target set by them by dismissing the batters of the batting team of the 2 nd innings.

If the batting team in the 2 nd innings achieves the target, which is one run more than the other team before the end of the last over, then this team will be declared the winner. The bowling team of the 2 nd innings can win the match if they succeed in defending their target either by dismissing all the batters of the opponent or by stopping them from scoring the required runs within the limited overs.

In Test Cricket

In test cricket format, the manner of playing is the same. Still, the fundamental difference is that there is no over-limit in this format, and the game is played for four innings instead of just two innings in the limited overs format.

In the 1 st inning, one team bowls, and the other bats and sets the target. Then in the 2 nd inning, the other team bats and tries to make many runs as scored by the batting team in the first innings. Here the change comes, if the batting team in the second inning reaches the target, they continue playing. Now, the batting team tries to take the lead by scoring the maximum number of runs till all the batters are not out. The runs scored after surpassing the target set in the 1 st inning by the batting team in the 2 nd inning are termed the lead. When all the batters of the batting team in the 2 nd inning get out, the 2 nd inning ends.

Now, in the 3 rd inning, the batting team of the 1 st inning again comes to bat and follows the lead. Here the bowling team has a chance of winning if they manage to out all the batters of the batting team before reaching their set lead. They will become the winner by the number of runs the other team is short and an inning, without playing the 4 th inning. If the batting team covers the lead, they continue batting and try to make maximum runs, which will be the target for the other team to win the game.

In the 4 th inning, the bowling team of the 3 rd inning comes out to bat, and their target is to make one run more than the runs scored by the batting team of the 3 rd inning. In this inning, if the batting team reaches the target, they will be the winner of the match. If the bowling successfully defends their target set in the 3 rd inning by taking all the wickets of the opponent team, they will win the game. If neither team achieves its target, the match is declared a draw.

Team Composition

In a team of eleven members, there is a captain, who is generally the best or most experienced batter, bowler, or both, then there is a vice-captain, and the rest members are a mix of batters, bowlers , and all-rounders .

Top International Tournaments by ICC

1) ICC World Test Championship

The ICC World Test Championship started in August 2019. It is the premier world championship for test cricket format. In this, the top nine test playing teams of the world play test matches between them as part of different test match series. These are league matches, with rights reserved with the game hosting nation. The total league matches are played for two years; on the basis of rankings, the top two teams play the final.

The final match is the event of the ICC, and the winner of the final game becomes the ICC World Test champion. The championship in 2019 started with the Ashes series and ended with the final match between India and New Zealand in June 2021. New Zealand won the game and became the first ICC World champion.

2) International Men's Cricket World Cup

It is the most prestigious and flagship ICC event. It is the 50 overs cricket tournament held at an interval of four years in which the top 10 teams of the world play for the trophy of the World Cup. Different cricket-playing countries host the contest on a random rotational basis.

The first edition of the World Cup was played in England in 1975 with eight teams. West Indies became the first to lift the world cup by defeating Australia by 17 runs.

The latest edition of the World Cup was held in England in 2019, in which England lifted the trophy for the first time in cricket history.

The most successful team in the world cup is Australia which has won the trophy five times.

3) International Women's World Cup

Surprisingly, the Women's World Cup is the oldest cricket championship. It was started in 1973 in England by the International Women's Cricket Council, in which England won the tournament by points.

Before 2005, it was organized at irregular intervals, but from 2005 it was held every four years, and now ICC organizes the event.

The last edition was held in 2022 in New Zealand and won by Australia for the 7 th time , making it the most successful team in the women's world cup.

4) ICC Men's T20 International World Cup

ICC started the first edition of the Men's T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa between twelve teams. India won the first edition by defeating Pakistan in the final.

The latest edition was held in 2021, in which Australia got its first T20 World Cup title.

West Indies has won the T20 World Cup twice, making it the most successful team in the tournament.

5) ICC Women's T20 International World Cup

The first edition of the T20 Women's World Cup was held in 2009 in England with eight international teams. England won the inaugural edition after beating New Zealand by six wickets.

The latest edition of the tournament was held in Australia in 2020, and the Australian team won the trophy by defeating the Indian women's team in the final.

Independent competitions are those that the ICC does not organize. They are generally managed by the cricketing board of the concerned nation. These competitions are usually held in the T20 format, and the most prominent of them are-

1) Indian Premiere League (IPL)

IPL is the world's most famous, most seen, most attended live, and wealthiest cricket tournament. BCCI started it in 2008 , and since then, it has been held every year in which ten teams play for the trophy. In this, players from different countries are auctioned and sold to the franchises for which they play the game. The names of the teams in the IPL are based on the names of the different cities in India.

It completed its 15 th edition in 2022. Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in the tournament.

2) Big Bash League (BBL)

BBL is the T20 cricket tournament held in Australia. In 2011, the first edition of the league was played. The administrative body of the BBL is Cricket Australia. There is a total of eight teams in this league. Perth Scorchers won the latest edition of 2021-2022 for the 4 th time. It is the most successful team in BBL.

3) Bangladesh Premier League

BPL is the T20 cricket league that started on the lines of IPL in 2012 with seven teams. The playing structure is the same, where the names of teams are based on the names of different cities of Bangladesh, and players from other nations participate in the tournament . Comilla Victorians won the last edition of the league.

4) Pakistan Super League

This T20 cricket league of Pakistan started with five teams, but now six are on board. The first edition was played in 2016 , though it was founded in 2015. The winner of the current edition is Lahore Qalandars in 2022. Islamabad United has won the title twice, the maximum number of times any team in the league won.

5) T20 Blast

T20 Blast has been known by different names like Twenty20 Cup (2003-2009), Friends Life T20(2010-2013), NatWest T20 Blast (2014-2017 ), and Vitality Blast since 2018 because currently, Vitality is the sponsor of the tournament.

It is the oldest T20 tournament that started in 2003 in England and Wales at the county level. In this, 18 county teams compete for the trophy divided into two or three divisions and play the group stage match within their division, and the top team of each division plays the final.

This league is administered by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Hampshire Hawks won the 2022 edition, and the Leicestershire Foxes were the most successful team winning the trophy three times.

At the International level, the administrative body of cricket is International Cricket Council (ICC) , founded in 1909 as Imperial Cricket Conference and renamed as ICC in 1987. The headquarter of ICC is located in Dubai, UAE .

A total of 108 nations are members of the ICC, of which 12 are full-time members who can play Test Cricket, whereas 96 are Associate members.

From 1909 to 1963, it was known as Imperial Cricket Conference, and then from 1964 to 1988, it was called International Cricket Conference . In 1989, its name was changed to International Cricket Council , which is also its present name.

At the national level, the game of cricket is managed by the national cricket boards of respective nations, like BCCI in India, ECB in England, Cricket Australia in Australia, etc.

You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

Time was that the cue for club cricketers to dig out their kit and dream of the summer to come, and of a sudden, magical increase in their abilities, was the start of the County Championship in April, an event usually marked in the papers with an ironical picture of a gloomy, windswept ground housing a few cagoule-clad spectators and the players themselves, frozen stiff. Today, the reminder for many that cricket is afoot comes in late March with the BBC’s commentaries of the Indian Premier League (IPL) – an interminable (74 matches this year) orgy of six-hitting and cheerleading, where the world’s best short-form players perform to packed stadiums.

The success of the IPL, the second-richest sports league in the world, has created a glut of similar T20 (20 overs a side) competitions as cash-strapped cricket boards strive for a share of its wealth. In February, South Africa, which had the best Test team in the world not long ago, sent a third-string Test side to lose in New Zealand so that its stars could play in the SA20, a tournament in which all six teams are owned by IPL franchises. As a packed international schedule becomes ever more squeezed by franchise T20, Test and first-class cricket are in danger of being swallowed up.

Into this turmoil comes the 161st edition of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack , the longest-running sports annual in the world and the definitive archive of the preceding English season and year in international cricket. His editor’s notes lead on the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s decision to give India’s cricketing board, the BCCI, an even greater share (38.5 per cent) of the international broadcast rights revenue when other boards, such as those in the West Indies and South Africa, could have used what is small change for the BCCI to keep Test cricket alive and competitive, writing: “India’s payday was waved through for two reasons: everyone earned a little more than before; and no one wants to upset the Indians, because they generate most of cricket’s wealth… this is where cricket finds itself, in dreary thrall to the notion that market forces must be obeyed.”

As such, Sharda Ugra’s report on the alarming politicisation of Indian cricket and last year’s 50-over World Cup, hosted by India, is one of the more urgent items. She describes an unlovely tournament “treated like a copy-and-paste version of the IPL” and conceived more as a coronation for India and a platform for Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalism than an international showpiece (amusingly, India lost the final and Modi had to present the trophy to Cummins).

But as the BCCI won’t care what Wisden thinks, the almanack’s campaigning energies are probably better directed to the home front – as in the radical, hopeful essay by Michael Collins, one of the authors of the 2023 Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket report, which was written in the wake of Black Lives Matter and the racism scandal exposed by Azeem Rafiq at Yorkshire. To break down English cricket’s endemic racism, sexism and classism, he proposes a complete democratisation of participation at junior level that ends the hold that private schools have on the route into the professional game. Equally worthy of attention is Tanya Aldred’s report on how the climate crisis and pollution are already compromising player safety, and may in time force an overdue reckoning with the excessive amount of professional cricket being played.

On this, the IPL et al could still learn a thing or two from the counties about how to create an overstuffed season guaranteed to defeat the will of anyone who might want to follow it. Thanks to years of muddled thinking and panicked audience-widening initiatives, the men’s English domestic calendar features four different competitions, all jumbled up, played by the 18 first-class counties and the eight franchises of the Hundred – a 100-ball tournament devised for terrestrial TV and a family audience (but which many county fans view as a sort of firework-spangled dungheap vandalising their summer). When the 2024 fixture list was released, the Professional Cricketers’ Association lambasted the “unsustainable” schedule, arguing that the standard was being lowered by the relentless grind and switching between formats, and that the travel required was a safety risk for male and female players driving around the country, night after night. It makes no financial sense, with most counties heavily dependent on the revenue redistributed from the England international TV rights to survive, rather than membership or gate revenue. Nor does it make much cricketing sense: there is a huge gap between county and international level, and the England teams play soul-sapping amounts of cricket to generate the broadcast revenue that keeps the counties going.

Like Wisden , cricket may yet prove peculiarly suited to the modern age – its unique rhythms mean it can be taken in as the soundtrack to the summer, like the background noise of a long, undemanding podcast, while you are doing something useful. It offers great variety, from the febrile 20-over hit to the excellent BBC and YouTube coverage of Championship cricket – the definitive sound of middle-aged men in a shed, not so much raging against the dying of the light as settling into it like an old easy chair. Short-form cricket, IPL included, can be a gateway to the wonders of the longer form, but as Stokes and McCullum understand, the standard, the billing and the attitude for Test cricket have to be right.

This in turn depends on a cogent, reasonable schedule that helps players excel and draws in casual fans. If – as the ECB’s 2022 High Performance Review suggests they should – the counties start to think of themselves less as (failing) professional sports teams and more as vital community assets and evangelists for their sport, and devote more of their resources to the excellent grass-roots work already happening and less to servicing a pointlessly full schedule, then the game in Britain may yet grow. As Michael Collins puts it: “Cricket is a unique sport in terms of England’s history, culture and social make-up. The cricket club is one of those ‘little platoons’ – family, church and community groups – that can, at its best, embed individuals in wider contexts of meaning and belonging that enrich lives.” Which is to say that, for all its flaws, cricket can still take its place as our summer game and one of the glories of that season.

She may have forgotten that Americans love dogs more than they love politicians.

American voters have never been more polarized—except, perhaps, when it comes to the shared belief that shooting a puppy is wrong. Has Kristi Noem’s admission of such an act doomed her political future?

Say this for Kristi Noem: She has an eye for literary detail.

The South Dakota governor is one week out from the publication of her new book, No Going Back (more on that title later). On Friday, The Guardian reported on one of the anecdotes Noem shares with her readers. In the book, the governor recalls the day she realized that her puppy, Cricket, had crossed the line from poorly behaved menace to, well, a problem that needed solving. Noem led Cricket to a gravel pit. Then she pulled the trigger. “It was not a pleasant job,” the governor writes. “But it had to be done.”

It’s the phrase gravel pit that stands out most—imagery fit for a Cormac McCarthy novel. Typically, campaign books don’t scream “literature.” They’re more or less marketing tools meant to showcase a politician’s character and leadership skills. Noem likely believed that recounting this saga (in addition to a story about killing a goat) would serve as a testament to her courage and her rural bona fides, endearing her to millions of potential voters. Instead, Noem publishing these sentences may one day be remembered as the gravest mistake of her career.

The backlash has been swift. Beyond Democrats and liberals seizing on the moment, even some Republicans and conservatives have offered condemnations. “Omg - now my blood is boiling,” the right-leaning social media influencer Catturd told his 2.4 million followers on X . “Remember, I’m a country boy who lives on a ranch. There’s a huge difference between putting an old horse down who is suffering, than shooting a 18 month dog for being untrainable.” In reality, Cricket appears to have been 14 months old. According to The Guardian , the puppy had attacked other animals, and Noem maintains she decided to put the dog down because it showed “aggressive behavior toward people by biting them.”

With some scandals, members of the American public have notoriously short memories, or at least they may be more inclined to forgive. But certain images never leave the collective psyche—especially when they involve dogs. This fundamental truth transcends politics. Michael Vick was one of the most dazzling NFL quarterbacks of the past quarter century, but you probably remember him first and foremost as the dog-fighting guy. The act of shooting a dog, as Noem did, is, for some, impossible to stomach. (Though once a dog has attacked a human, that calculus changes for others.) Canine execution was once the dark joke of the January 1973 death-themed issue of National Lampoon , the cover of which featured a man holding a revolver against a floppy ear along with the warning “ If You Don’t Buy This Magazine, We’ll Kill This Dog .” (The pup in question, Mr. Cheeseface, looks bewildered.)

What is it about dogs, in particular, that tugs at our core? In a recent essay for The Atlantic , Tommy Tomlinson, the author of the new book Dogland , offered his own unique admission : “By any measure, I loved my mom more than our dog. If I could bring one back, I’d pick her 100 times out of 100. So why, in the moment of their passing, did I cry for him but not for her?” Many dogs, even the bad ones, are seen as unimpeachable. Elected officials, not so much.

Noem is (was?) considered to be among former president Donald Trump’s top prospects for a 2024 running mate. Now she’ll have to fight to escape being branded the woman who once killed her own puppy. Many people seem to want her to express some form of contrition. On Friday, Noem posted a screenshot of the Guardian article, writing, “We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm.” Then she plugged her book. “If you want more real, honest, and politically INcorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping, preorder ‘No Going Back.’”

Yesterday, with the online fervor still raging, Noem released a second statement , standing by the idea that shooting the puppy, rather than, say, putting it up for adoption, was the “right” thing to do. “I can understand why some people are upset about a 20 year old story of Cricket, one of the working dogs at our ranch, in my upcoming book— No Going Back ,” her statement read. “The book is filled with many honest stories of my life, good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions, and lessons learned … Whether running the ranch or in politics, I have never passed on my responsibilities to anyone else to handle. Even if it’s hard and painful. I followed the law and was being a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor. As I explained in the book, it wasn’t easy. But often the easy way isn’t the right way.”

No Going Back ’s subtitle— The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward —is the exact sort of phrase you expect to read in a studied politician’s carefully curated treatise. Many of these books are often quite rote, devices meant to serve as the starting point of a national campaign. A lot of them, but not all of them, are bland by design. Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father is perhaps the most notable exception to the rule, but there are others. Jason Kander, once seen as an heir to Obama’s Democratic Party, published a memoir in 2018 about his time serving in Afghanistan and working in state politics that largely fit the political-book mold, right down to the title: Outside the Wire: Ten Lessons I’ve Learned in Everyday Courage . But four years later, he returned with a second memoir, Invisible Storm , showcasing edges of his life that he had sanded down in his first outing. The result was an honest and radically candid look at the depths of his PTSD .

Typically, but not always, political books are produced with the help of a ghostwriter. Noem’s publisher did not respond to my request for comment as to whether Noem used one.

This morning, I called the journalist Maximillian Potter, who collaborated with Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado on his political memoir, The Opposite of Woe , and served as an editorial consultant on the Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen’s memoir, The Power of One . (Potter is also the co-author of an Atlantic investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by the Hollywood mogul Bryan Singer.) He was careful to note that the Guardian report may not include the chapter’s full context; still, Noem has not refuted any of the details. What stood out most to Potter was how Noem, according to the report, writes that she “hated that dog.” “I’ve never heard anyone refer to a pet or an animal with hate . As a collaborator, that’s the word I would have discussed,” Potter told me. “I think part of a ghost or a collaborator’s job on projects like this is to not discourage the author from sharing their truth; it’s to be a thought partner and help them think through what it is they’re really trying to say.”

Potter also brought up an old political idiom, often attributed to Robert F. Kennedy (senior), later popularized by Chris Matthews: “Hang a lantern on your problem.” Maybe that’s what is really going on here. In the book, Noem reportedly notes that a construction crew watched her kill both the puppy and the goat. Perhaps, as her national profile grows, and as potential vetting for Trump’s VP gets under way, Noem sought to get in front of any potentially damaging story that might emerge through opposition research. (Her chief of communications did not respond to my request for an interview.)

Noem is midway through her second term as governor, and she’s ineligible for a third. No Going Back was supposed to be a prelude to her next chapter. Trump even blurbed it : “This book, it’s a winner.” But if he doesn’t pick Noem for VP, her new book’s title may have prophesied the end of her political story.

Somewhere in the hills above Malibu, drenched in California sunshine and sitting side by side in a used white Volkswagen bug, two teenage boys realized they were lost … This was the early 1960s, and the boy driving the car was Albert Einstein—yes, this really was his given name, years before he changed it to Albert Brooks. Riding shotgun was his best friend and classmate from Beverly Hills High School, Rob Reiner. Brooks had inherited the car from one of his older brothers, and he’d made it his own by removing the handle of the stick shift and replacing it with a smooth brass doorknob. After several failed attempts to find the Pacific Coast Highway, which would take them home, Brooks and Reiner came upon a long fence surrounding a field where a single cow was grazing. Albert “stopped the car and he leaned out the window and he said, ‘Excuse me, sir! Sir?’ and the cow just looked up,” Reiner told me. “And he said, ‘How do you get back to the PCH?’ And the cow just did a little flick of his head, like he was flicking a fly away, and went back to eating.” Without missing a beat, Albert called out, “Thank you!” and confidently zoomed away. “I said, ‘Albert, you just took directions from a cow!’ And he said, ‘Yeah, but he lives around here. He knows the area.’ ”

Around the country, players wore black armbands in memory of the young Worcestershire spinning all-rounder Josh Baker, whose death was announced on Thursday.

His parents, Paul and Lisa, paid tribute to their son: “We are both broken. Achieved so many of his dreams before reaching 21. Take every opportunity to hug your parents and children. We’ve taken great comfort from the many messages received so far – keep sharing and posting your memories please.”

At New Road, where Baker had come through the ranks, the club opened a book of remembrance. His former Worcestershire coach Shaftab Khalid recalled, “not just a very talented cricketer but also an amazing and wonderful human being. He was such a nice, humble and sweet person. He was a Worcestershire boy so playing for his county and then the England Under‑19s, the dream was coming true.”

There was a minute’s silence in memory of Baker at Derby, among other grounds. Ollie Robinson grabbed two wickets after Sussex won the toss and chose to field under filthy skies. Derbyshire were 189 for eight when the rain fell, with 50 for Luis Reece and a giddy 44 for Aneurin Donald. At Old Trafford, Kent fought back after being reduced to 129 for six by Lancashire under the floodlights, with a third fifty of the season for Joey Evison, and a boundary heavy 41 for Zak Crawley, who brushed George Balderson (three for 62) for three successive fours.

In the battle of the brothers at a soggy Headingley, Glamorgan ’s Billy Root stroked 51 against Yorkshire , but not before older brother Joe had dropped him at slip; and it was dismissals a-go-go at Taunton, where 20 wickets fell on an emerald pitch, all to seamers. Somerset bowled Essex out for 156 after winning the toss, with only Tom Westley making it past 25, Migael Pretorius finishing with four for 26. Sam Cook and Jamie Porter soon got their revenge, ripping through Somerset for 128, with five wickets each. There was time for Essex to face one over, with five slips, before stumps.

Play was washed out without a ball bowled between Middlesex and Leicestershire at Lord’s.

Twenty wickets fell on an eventful day at Taunton, while elsewhere the rain intervened. We’ll be back tomorrow – have a lovely Friday night!

While England women’s coach Jon Lewis spoke of his sadness and that of Alex Gidman, the women’s assistant coach, who used to be head coach at Worcestershire and oversaw Baker’s development into a first-team cricketer. “It’s really shocking. I spoke to Alex and he was pretty cut up about it,” said Lewis. “He gave Josh his first contract at Worcestershire, so he was quite connected to that part of cricket. Cricket is an incredibly small world and it’s really sad.”

From Gloucestershire earlier this week came the announcement that 23 year old Ben Wells was retiring from cricket after being diagnosed with a heart complaint. An extract from his letter here:

“I’m very thankful for everything that cricket has given me throughout my life, from the friends I’ve made, the places I’ve been able to visit, and the many memories that I’ve made along the way. Cricket has been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember, it’s been all I’ve ever wanted to do. From playing in the garden as a child with my brother, every break time at school, going to Bath Cricket Club summer camps, playing throughout age group sides, Exeter University, and throughout my time at Gloucestershire, playing cricket has always been my dream and driven everything I’ve done. Devon Thomas banned for five years

They Found a Rare Species in the Wild: An Original Bolt-Together House

The tiny cabin, one of the few extant examples of a popular 1970s design, had no heat or toilet. But it was theirs for $85,000.

One weekend in 2021, Gemma Warren was doing what she did every weekend: sitting over coffee in her home in Tulum, Mexico, combing through the real estate listings for cabins in the Catskill Mountains of New York.

She and her husband, Nick Warren, who are English, had discovered the Catskills several years earlier, while living in Brooklyn and working for public relations and marketing companies headquartered in London. They fell for the region’s scented forests, sunny meadows, icy streams and not terribly threatening bears (unless provoked). They wanted to buy a weekend house, but found nothing to fit their budget.

So six years ago, they picked up and moved to Tulum, on the Yucatán Peninsula, because they also had a sunny, oceanic side to their natures. There, they worked remotely. But the Catskills still beckoned.

In that fateful website-browsing session three years ago, Ms. Warren, now 37, saw a listing for a cabin in the western Catskills hamlet of Delancey, N.Y. The asking price: $65,000. The house was 192 square feet and lacked heating and a toilet.

“A shack” is how Mr. Warren, 38, described it: “There was running water. But that was pretty much it.”

And yet it sat on 6.8 acres thick with old trees and tall grasses. Flowing next to it was a creek that audibly burbled in a video. A large picture window looked out to the water and forest.

Investigating further, the Warrens discovered that the tiny building with its projecting shed roof had an unusual provenance. It was one of the few extant examples of a Bolt-Together House, a bare-bones cutie that Family Circle magazine published in 1972 in a series on D.I.Y. dwellings.

A young architect named Jeffrey Milstein had designed the house on paper as something that could be taken apart and moved if one didn’t happen to own the land it occupied. The building was conceived as rough-sawed plywood panels bolted to a collapsible framework of timber posts and trusses attached to four concrete piers embedded in the earth.

Family Circle, riding the wave of eco-consciousness that washed through the 1970s, handed Mr. Milstein the money to construct the house, gave it a big spread and sold the plans.

“If you have a large garage, your husband can prefabricate the panels (none is larger than 4’x8’); cut, drill and paint the posts and trusses; then move the entire house to your site in a 16-foot rented truck,” the magazine suggested to the readers it took for granted were female and married.

The cost of construction was about $2,500 ($18,680 in today’s dollars), inclusive of lumber, wiring, plumbing, heating (with a wood-burning stove), kitchen appliances and some built-in furnishings, including a fold-down dining table. There was also a platform bed on a mezzanine level reached by a wall ladder.

The house was a hit; Family Circle sold a reported 25,000 plans, more than for any other project in its series. The Italian shelter magazine Abitare featured it in the May 1979 issue along with another of Mr. Milstein’s projects that combined a house with a camping tent. Both designs were published in Lester Walker’s seminal 1993 guide to small living, “ The Tiny Book of Tiny Houses .”

Today, the Bolt-Together House is a rare species in the wild, a snow leopard for tiny-home enthusiasts. A YouTube video posted a dozen years ago of a shabby survivor in New Brunswick, Canada, has attracted more than 53,000 views.

All of which explains why the Warrens were besotted with the Delancey listing. “It was just a dreamy little place to us that was in our budget and so unique,” Ms. Warren said.

They were far from the only admirers, but were determined to have it. “We put an offer on it direct from Mexico, without even going to the town or seeing the cabin, which I think threw the Realtor for six,” Ms. Warren said, using a term derived from the game of cricket to describe the feeling of being whacked hard by a bat.

The sellers interpreted the couple’s pre-emptive bid of $85,000 as less a gesture of enthusiasm than of possible instability and accepted the second-best offer. As Mr. Warren interpreted the rejection, the sellers were afraid he and his wife weren’t serious and would “mess them around.” As fate would have it, he added, “a few weeks later, the second highest bidder actually messed them around.”

The Bolt-Together House was now the couple’s, a retreat where they could spend several months a year with their dogs, Taco, Margarita and Chili. But it still smacked of shack.

Had its builder followed Mr. Milstein’s plans to the letter, the walls would have been insulated and there would have been sanitation facilities. (The house would also have been 224 square feet.) Yet neither comfort in winter nor an indoor commode appeared to be a priority. Instead, there was an outhouse some distance away, in the meadow.

The Warrens installed insulation as well as baseboard electric heating. Their dream of a speedily acquired and affordable septic system, however, was dashed by the complexity of the site, with its creek, and by pandemic-related delays.

At that point, they discovered the Cinderella toilet , which incinerates waste with the push of a button. At $5,000, it was a comparative bargain. They put it into a new bathroom, along with a walk-in shower with glazed green wall tile.

Working with a local carpenter, they doubled the size of the kitchenette, from subatomic to minuscule. Its counters and cabinets are maple with brass hardware, and there is a two-burner electric cooktop and a dainty farmhouse sink.

The couple also expanded the size of the mezzanine’s sleeping platform to fit a queen-size bed. They put in Wi-Fi that they said works far better than their Wi-Fi in Tulum.

Outside, they laid down a driveway through the meadow and built a floating deck overlooking the creek.

The total cost of renovations, they estimated, was $60,000.

Recently, the Warrens welcomed Mr. Milstein, now 79, to check out the place. Despite the plaudits he received for his innovative shelter designs, he chucked the practice of architecture decades ago and now works as an aerial photographer with a studio in Kingston, N.Y.

“It was cute,” he said of the Warrens’ house. He understood why the couple had brightened the interior with white paint, although he described himself as more of a natural-wood man. He also understood the sacrifice of the ground-level sleeping area in his original design to make room for a bigger kitchen.

“It was surprising how comfortable it was, with four of us hanging out there,” he added, alluding to the Warrens and his girlfriend, Kim Cantine. Ms. Cantine “had the idea that she wants to find these around the country and photograph me standing in front of them.”
