Angie Harmon Talks About ‘Buried in Barstow’

Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Angie Harmon describes Buried in Barstow as her heart project. The script immediately grabbed her attention and she spent nearly three years shopping it around before Lifetime, the home of Harmon’s Rizzoli & Isles series, came on board.

The story will play out over a series of movies and the first installment is set to premiere on Lifetime on June 4, 2022. Tom Evans and David Rambo wrote the screenplay and Howard Deutch directed, with Angie Harmon starring and executive producing.

Harmon plays Hazel King, a retired killer for hire based in Vegas who attempts to escape that life after becoming pregnant. She finally settles down in Barstow, CA and tries to maintain a low profile while running a diner with her teenage daughter (played by Lauren Richards).

And, of course, Buried in Barstow finds Hazel pulled back into her old life for what’s supposed to be one last job.

During the 2022 Television Critics Association’s winter press panel, Angie Harmon described the actual process of shopping Buried in Barstow around.

“There’s a lot of crying and heavy drinking, more crying. There’s a lot of rejection, more crying, heavy drinking. You know, it’s fun, it’s great. It’s just one of those things where you really start to – in all seriousness – see how long it takes to get a project made, especially one that you believe in,” explained Harmon. “There are just so many different facets that go into getting a project done. And this is a real learning experience.

To be very honest, I’m comfortable with the word no. I’m just not really used to hearing it because I’m like, ‘No, no, no, you don’t mean no. You mean yes. Great, fine,’ and now we all work together. But it was just like there was a lot of ‘Hmmm, it’s not really for us.’ What are you talking about?! It’s amazing, and genius, and these actors are incredible. What do you mean it’s not really for…? Okay.”

Harmon continued: “So, yeah, it was a very sort of humbling experience especially [when] you take it to people that you admire in the business, and people that you love and adore in the business, and people that have sort of shepherded you through different aspects of your career, and then they say no. And you have to learn to just sort of not take it personally.

I believe in it and I’m amazingly ‘tenacious,’ I believe is the word. Other people would say different adjectives. I’m going to go with tenacious. I believed in this from the moment that I read it. The moment. And so, I was just, ‘It has to be made. It has to be done.’”

Angie Harmon sees Vegas and Barstow as representing the two sides of Hazel’s character.

“I can see that because the Vegas sort of angle represents her youth and just how horrible it was and all of that. But then Barstow, it’s not like it’s a real pleasant place to be either,” said Harmon. “It’s got that kind of edgy anger that she’s trying to change and just make a wonderful life for her and her daughter, and the other characters that are in the diner.”

Texas-born Harmon didn’t have any qualms about starring in another project that required her to handle guns after her seven-season run on Rizzoli & Isles .

“No, I have no problem with that. And to be honest, you know, I think it’s kind of an aspect of my career that just sort of followed me around the entire time. I got to a place where I was just like, you know, it’s a blessing because what if I was the huge nerd? I just had to play a huge nerd for 25 years. At this point, I can break down a crime scene and prosecute a case and win or defend it, or whatever. Whatever sort of law enforcement you might need. I’m your gal,” joked Harmon.

Buried in Barstow ’s a different sort of project for Harmon. She’s never been involved in a series of films before and admits that going in she wasn’t sure how it was going to work.

“I kind of didn’t really understand how we were supposed to do this and then film it and then how much of the original script we’re supposed to put in this one. So, it was kind of a learning experience for me,” said Harmon. “I mean, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m curious to see how the audience responds to it. But then I just sort of justified it in my head as we go to the theater or we watch movies that are two hours long, and then there’s a sequel, and then there’s a third. So, I was just like, ‘Oh, well, they’ve been doing this since the beginning of filmmaking.’

I kind of justified it like that. But to be honest, this is a new experience for me.”

Hazel King ( Angie Harmon ) is no ordinary ex-assassin. Having wielded a gun since age 15, the trained killer now runs a local desert-town diner and has an adult daughter (Lauren Richards) to protect.

But the past is hard to outrun in the tension-filled Buried in Barstow (premiering Saturday, June 4, 8/7c, Lifetime ). And Hazel shies away from nothing, whether it’s her daughter’s abusive beau ( Timothy Granaderos , above left, with Harmon) or the bigger baddies who come out of the woodwork to access her high-caliber talents.

Lifetime’s Buried In Barstow has some serious Jack Reacher vibes. Buried In Barstow is a Lifetime movie that was released on Saturday, June 4. The film stars Angie Harmon as Hazel King, a woman who runs a diner in Barstow, California, having run away to the town after living in Las Vegas where she was an assassin. After having a daughter, Joy, teenaged mother Hazel disappeared in an attempt to escape from her killer past, only to be tracked down twenty years later by her former boss to do one last hit. To complicate things even more, her former boss (played by Bruce McGill) is her father , who has also sent a man named Elliot to watch over Hazel and make sure she does what she’s supposed to. Hazel and Elliot begin a relationship, with Hazel unaware that he’s employed by her father.

Buried In Barstow ends with “To Be Continued” splashed across the screen, as Hazel is shot by an assailant who then kidnaps her co-worker Javier. She is left for dead on the street behind her diner as Elliot tries to save her.

Will Buried in Barstow get a sequel?

Here’s what we know about Part 2 of Buried In Barstow . Lifetime has stated that Buried In Barstow is meant to be a series of films. Though we don’t know exactly how many are planned, we do know that there will at least be one sequel. (Harmon, who is also an executive producer on the film, has said of the series, “I would like for there to be six to eight,” adding, “if people keep liking them, we’ll keep making them. Hopefully.”)

A majority of the movie was taped in Shelby, a city in Cleveland County of North Carolina. Specifically, the production team reportedly set up camp in Red Bridges BBQ for around two weeks to film a large portion of the Lifetime thriller. The cast and crew members of ‘Buried in Barstow’ transformed the diner in order to give it a Californian vibe and make it stand in for the BBQ diner of Barstow, where Hazel works. The diner is located at 2000 East Dixon Boulevard in Shelby.

Other Locations in North Carolina

For filming purposes, the production team even traveled to the city of Charlotte and the town of Cherokee, in North Carolina. The former is located in the Piedmont region and is the most populous city in the state, while the latter is a census-designated place located in Western North Carolina and serves as a prominent tourist destination.

No, ‘Buried in Barstow’ is not based on a true story. The thrilling narrative can be credited to the creative minds of Thompson Evans and Tom Evans, out of whom, the former has solid experience in working and writing for several productions. So, the two Evans worked together and conjured up an enthralling plot with a few ties to reality.

The Lifetime movie involves Hazel working as a killer for most of her life until she gets blessed with a daughter, Joy. She parts ways from this particular lifestyle to lead a normal life with her daughter. However, she is forced back into her old ways when her past starts affecting her present and possibly her future. This similar pattern of a female character being involved in the killing business is seen in several other movies and TV shows. One of the best examples is that of Sook-Hee / Chae Yeon-Soo in ‘The Villainess.’

Just like Hazel, Sook-Hee was also trained to be a killer since her childhood. Now that she has welcomed a child of her own into the world, she wants out of the business to live an ordinary life with her child. So, as you can see, the subject and elements that are seen in the Lifetime film are not something that we have not witnessed on screen before. Having said that, the fact still remains that ‘Buried in Barstow’ is not rooted in reality.

Buried In Barstow 2 Latest News

Lifetime has not only confirmed that will there be a sequel to Buried in Barstow , but that the film will also be the first entry in a series of movies. Angie Harmon, who is also an executive producer on Buried in Barstow , has stated, " I'd like there to be between six and eight of them, and I hope we can get there ." (via Smashing Interviews ) . While it is unclear exactly how many Buried in Barstow movies there will be, Buried in Barstow 2 is definitely happening

Buried In Barstow 2 Production Status

Also in her 2022 discussion with Smashing Interviews , Harmon shared that filming for Buried in Barstow 2 was set to begin " in the beginning of June ". This was the last update on the Buried in Barstow sequel, so all that can be gleaned from Harmon's statement is that it is somewhere in the "in development" stage.

Buried In Barstow 2 Cast

While Lifetime has not confirmed Buried in Barstow 2 's cast, it is guaranteed that Angie Harmon will return as Hazel King in the sequel considering that she is the main character in this series. Buried in Barstow also ended with Javier's kidnapping so it would be a surprise not to see George Paez return. Additionally, Hazel had unfinished business with several main characters from the first film, so while it has not been confirmed, Lauren Richards as Joy King, Kristoffer Polaha as Elliot, and Bruce McGill as Von will probably be back. No new characters or actors have been mentioned.

Buried In Barstow 2 Story Details

While no major story details have been confirmed for Buried in Barstow 2 , the original movie ended with a "To Be Continued" card on the screen, so the sequel will most likely pick up where Buried in Barstow left off. There are various plot lines that the sequel could explore, but what will most likely happen is that Elliot saves Hazel from bleeding to death, the two team up to rescue Javier, and discover who was behind Hazel's attack. While the exact story details of the sequel are still up in the air, at the very least there will be a follow-up — or six to eight, if Harmon gets her wish — to the exciting and action-packed Buried in Barstow .

Nearly a year ago, Lifetime premiered Buried In Barstow . This movie stars Rizzoli & Isles alum Angie Harmon , and Hallmark fan-favorite Kristoffer Polaha.

Viewers fell in love with Hazel King and how she would do anything to protect her daughter! Most of all, there were a lot of cliffhangers at the end of the first movie. When will fans finally get some resolution?

Will There Be A Buried In Barstow Sequel?

Speaking to Charlotte Magazine , Angie Harmon revealed what is next for her movie series. Turns out, A&E is taking this golden kernel of a mama bear story and shopping other places to turn Buried In Barstow into a series. Moreover, Angie Harmon will continue to star and produce this new project.

More so, for the past year, they have been working on the script to turn this into a series.

Lifetime, who is a subsidiary of A&E will not be airing this series. Instead, it will be shopped to streamers like Peacock, Netflix, or Hulu.

Will Kristoffer Polaha Be Back For The  Buried In Barstow Series?

One question fans may ask is that when this series is sold, will Kristoffer Polaha be back? We don’t have an answer to that. Yet, we do know that he signed a four-picture contract with Lifetime.

If and when this series is picked up by a streamer, there will be a new contract for each member of the cast. The only confirmed return is Angie Harmon.

However, when TV Shows Ace interviewed the Mystery 101 star, he did have some pretty wonderful things to say about Buried In Barstow .

Barstow was an awesome movie, Angie Harmon is an awesome actress and she played an unbelievably likable badass that a lot of people connected with. Every mother knows what it feels like to become a Mama Bear or a Mama Lion and wants to protect their family. Don’t mess with Mama! And Howie Deutch did a masterful job directing it for a global audience. It was lightning in a bottle and this is not the last folks will see of Hazel King or the people in her world. 

Whether Polaha, director Howard Deutch, or any of the other cast and crew of this fabulous movie return will likely be up to who picks up the series, and schedules. A series takes much longer to film than it did to film the OG.

Angie Harmon Movie Viewership Was First For Lifetime

One interesting piece of information that should help get this new series sold is that Buried In Barstow had around 1.5 million viewers watching the premiere. This is better than most of Lifetime’s Christmas movies.

Moreover, this Angie Harmon-led movie brought more male viewers to Lifetime than any other show. This could be the biggest selling point to a big streamer.

Can’t wait to see this as a series, you’ve been off too long.

Why don’t you leave it on the network where it started? Stay with your fans and stay where they know where you are and don’t have to go tracking you down!

BIG mistake leaving Lifetime for a pay service that viewers may or may not have! I particularly do not have them, and have been awaiting BIB with bated breath. It kills me that they are moving it to a pay service. I am boycotting Netflix because of its Leftist racist views against anyone but AA people as evidenced by Chris Rock’s “Tamborine”. And you only have to view the rest of their lineup to see that they truly do lean Left. Sad that corporates do not stay in their lane. Instead they would rather insult their base, so that’s why we leave in droves. Please stay at Lifetime! Pretty soon, I may just pull the plug altogether and go back to reading only. What a sad outlook for someone who loves this dynamic on the screen. Que sera, sera!

I love Angie Harmon. She can do real intense characters, humor, loving emotions, being goofy and smart and of course beautiful. I really want to see her again in “Buried in Barstow” but on a channel I can afford to get on limited income. Most of us will be a loyal audience so please keep us in mind.

I’m on a fixed budget and cut the cord with any cable or satellite tv provider! Best thing I ever did! Currently I have Hulu for $7.99 a month, Prime Video comes with my prime membership for $5.99 per month for low income people, FrndlyTv for $8.99 a month for 2 devices which has 41 channels including Lifetime and LMN, and Peacock for $4.99 a month. So with all the services I can basically watch anything I want to watch and pay less than $30 per month!

Maria I agree with your comments about the big mistake. We are seniors like Nancy and on limited funds Here in New Zealand netflix allows 5 family devices which worked fine until them required to be in the same geolocation. Being 100km from the rest of the family in Wellington cut us off so we wont use Netflix. Have been waiting FOREVER for the sequel only to learn I have to pay to see it. I have satellite TV which is already expensive and as a senior I know nothing about streaming services and don’t want to have to pay more to see what Lifetime should have kept on Lifetime! You just lost this customer Lifetime.

When buried Barstow 2 is released on another network how will the viewer know which network will aire it since Lifetime originally aired episodes 1?

I doubt Angie Harmon has any input which network or streaming service will carry the next episodes of Buried in Barstow. She is probably just happy to have it picked up to carry on the show. I love the idea that it could be a series!!!

shame on whoever by changing the network of this part #2 movie with angie I pay enough for the lowest cable and to have us on fixed incomes to be able to watch , this for a price for for got sakes lets be real.

I agree that it is so unfair to lower income families to loss all the good tv shows to pay channels. They just pull you in to shows to make money somewhere else. Like all the Yellowstone series and Outlander

Angie Harmon is not an actress I watch much of,with that being said I LOVED HER AS HAZEL in Buried in Barstow,,and said to myself this needs to be a series, figuring the movie would be wrapped up as one and done,so i was kind of happy it ended in a cliff hanger kinda upset it ended as as cliff hanger!!!! I will follow this show where ever it goes to watch more of Hazels story ,and her story can have so many turns!!! Good job Angie!!
