Introduction:

‘Cleanliness’ as per the Cambridge dictionary means the state of being clean or the act of keeping things clean . One of the first commandment for health is cleanliness. Cleanliness is essential physically, mentally, spiritually and even environmentally.

Importance of Cleanliness:

Cleanliness is the major step to a healthy living. Cleanliness can prevent and cure people from communicable diseases. Effective cleaning can forbid viruses and other infectious diseases.

Tips to Maintain Cleanliness:

Major tips to maintain Cleanliness personally include brushing and taking bath regularly, washing hands properly before and after every meal, maintaining neatly trimmed nails and eating healthy food.

Environmental cleanliness can be enhanced by cleaning the mess created around us regularly, avoiding plastic bag usage, not littering the road by throwing the garbage, effective disposal of used water, adopting reusing and recycling techniques and always monitoring the pollution levels.

Conclusion:

Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Indian Government’s initiative like Swachh Bharat has given hope for a cleaner India. Along with the government it is the duty of every citizen to ensure a clean home and clean street to enable a peaceful living.

The state of being free and clean from dirt and germs and the act of imbibing this as a habit is called cleanliness. Cleanliness is one of the best qualities a human being can possess. In this way, cleanliness has more of a cultural and social impact on society as a whole.

With the assistance of cleanliness, we can keep our mental as well as physical health clean, which will make us feel better. Cleanliness offers to ascend to a decent character by keeping the body, brain, and soul perfect and tranquil. Next step is to keep your surroundings clean. Whether it be your room, school, garden, community, society, etc., you should keep it neat and tidy. Cleanliness cuts across for all stages of life and it plays important roles in the activities of daily living. In education, cleanliness has been determined to have an impact on leaning. The mindset of students is influenced by the environment which influences the ability of students to learn. A dirty environment is not conducive for learning because it instills stressful motions and there is reduced ability of students to learn.

In the workplace, the same concept applies because productivity is influenced by the environment. A clean environment will enhance productivity because people will work with a positive mindset that is free of stress. Also, achievements will be more pronounced in a clean environment compared to a dirty environment. In health, cleanliness is important because hygienic practices contribute to good health of individuals. A dirty environment predisposes people to diseases, which affects their ability to perform activities and it results in less productivity.

Social relationships are built through interactions between people. Personal hygiene is an important aspect in creating social relations because it is hard to approach a dirty person as they will be having bad breath, bas body odor and the interaction will be limited due to discomfort.

Challenges in Cleanliness:

Lack of resources can inhibit cleanliness. In order to maintain cleanliness, there is need for water, detergents and other supplies like cleaning equipment. In some situations, all these resources may be unavailable thus cleanliness is compromised. Another challenge is the availability of labor. Since cleaning is tasking and requires effort from people, some people opt out and cleanliness will not be achieved.

In conclusion, cleanliness is a huge responsibility that requires commitment. The impacts of a clean environment on the performance and achievements should be a motivating factor. If you love a clean place it should be your responsibility to make it clean.

Cleanliness can basically be defined as a state or attitude of keeping things clean and trying to stay away from any form of dirt in a bid to maintain a very good mental and physical health. Generally, cleanliness is an act of trying to keep our mind, body, home, dress, surrounding and even every of our other work area clean and very neat. The cleanliness of our body is extremely essential for our mental and physical health. Our surrounding areas should also be kept clean and our environment being clean is of utmost importance to our intellectual and social health. We should try to imbibe the habit of cleanliness and ensure that our home and surroundings are free of dirt; dirt is the primary cause of most diseases we have around us. If our surrounding isn’t clean and our body isn’t properly groomed and taken care of we can become highly susceptible to a variety of disease causing bacteria, germs, fungus and virus.

People with dirty habits are the major ones that spread fatal (threat to life) and very dangerous diseases. A lot of infectious diseases are propagated to different wide areas and can make people very sick and in severe cases leads to the death of the sick. As a result of this, we should do our best to always try to take good care of our health through our cleanliness every day. Some of the habits we should endeavour to imbibe include us always washing our hands very well and with soap anytime we eat or before we eat anything, we should also try to always make sure our body and most especially our face is clean by bathing frequency, we should also ensure that we take proper care of all our clothes and try to wear only clothes that are properly and well washed and clean; all of these should be done to keep a very good mental and physical health. Cleanliness also does a great deal to help boost our self-respect and level of confidence and also earn respect from other people. Cleanliness is a very good habit that can always make us happy and proud of ourselves in the society.

Cleanliness is extremely important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a good standard of living. Cleanliness plays a very vital role in boosting a person’s popularity. A lot of civil laws and programmes have been organised and put in place by various governments of the world. We should endeavour to dispose the wastes in our surrounding, we can do this by outing our waste away into the dustbin for disposal and in a bid to prevent the spread of various infections and diseases in our home and surrounding. Cleanliness is not just one person’s responsibility or job; everybody should do their best individually and collectively to maintain cleanliness in the country, community, society and the home. We should do our best to fully understand all the different facets of cleanliness so that we can fully benefit from cleanliness.

Cleanliness ranks high on the agenda of great and successful people. Because next to hard work, cleanliness tells a lot about a person’s character. When it is belittled, it results in indiscipline, dirt and disease. Therefore, when people progress, they become more clean and neat. Hence, cleanliness is often seen as an indicator of progress in the civilization of a society.

Areas of Cleanliness:

i. Personal Grooming:

Every individual is capable of the art of personal grooming. It involves cleaning and maintaining the body parts and look good. Taking bath, brushing and flossing teeth, combing, washing hands whenever required, cutting nails and hair at regular intervals are some habits that are important part of personal cleanliness. It further involves keeping our mind from filthiness. While a theist should spend time every day to confess the wrongdoings and receive forgiveness, an atheist needs to spend time on meditation on a regular basis. Keeping ones thoughts clean is as important as physical cleanliness.

Next to personal cleanliness comes keeping the dwelling place neat and clean. Starting with disposing the garbage on a daily basis, it includes cleaning up all rooms on a regular basis, maintaining bedcovers and curtains, trimming the interior and exterior garden, keeping the kitchen sink and toilet free of unpleasant smell, insects etc. It also includes proper disposal of solid and liquid waste into the municipal dustbin and drainage system.

iii. Workplace:

Since major part of the productive day is spent in the workplace, it is necessary to keep it very clean. Being quite larger than home in terms of area and headcount, the workplace requires the collective effort of the employer, employees and janitors to maintain the work environment. Apart from the basic cleanliness activities done at home, the workplace needs additional application of disinfectants, air filters, and waste disposal systems to maintain hygiene and dignity. It needs still more attention at Hospitals, Restaurants and like industries.

iv. Public Places:

Living in communities, it is important to keep public places like roads, beaches, parks etc. neat and clean. If each citizen becomes responsible and could show the same care that is taken for home and workplace, then the city and the entire country would have a clean environment to live, work and play.

Benefits of Cleanliness:

Since health is wealth, cleanliness prevents diseases, promotes good health and thereby preserves our wealth. It maintains discipline at all levels. It promotes self-respect and self-confidence of the family, institution, city and country. A clean environment gives a cheerful mind to improve and progress.

How to Nurture Cleanliness:

Although it is best to learn cleanliness from childhood, it could be developed at point of life whenever the sensitivity is achieved. Being careful and regular on a daily basis is the success mantra for cleanliness. It has nothing to do with being rich. So, it could be achieved by anyone in the society irrespective of their social status and wealth.

Champions of Cleanliness:

The first Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew started the campaign to keep the country clean almost 50 years ago. It made the place pleasant and added value to its economy. The sickness rate is low, life expectancy is more, tourism has flourished and all the citizens benefit from it.

Learning cleanliness from his days in the West, Mahatma Gandhi insisted that a lavatory must be as clean as a drawing room. He strongly believed that cleanliness would promote good health and hence advocated it throughout his lifetime.

Following Gandhi’s model, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated a nation-wide campaign called Swach Bharat on 2nd October, 2014. It functions to provide sanitation facilities, proper solid and liquid waste disposal systems, and safe drinking water.

Cleanliness adds more value to personal and social life. Since good habits are contagious, it is possible to teach children, neighbours and illiterates on the importance of cleanliness, by being a role model. With a collective effort, cleanliness and in turn, good health and happiness are within reach.

Keeping our mind, body, home, neighborhood and workplace Clean and Green is “Cleanliness.” It is one of the most important habits we develop since childhood. We cannot ignore the value of cleanliness and hygiene in our lives. Habits learned in the early phase of our live stays implanted in our mind for a more extended period. Being clean and keeping green is a lifestyle we need to adapt for leading a healthy life.

Cleanliness is not just limited to sanitation of the area where you live. It has a pivotal role in your personal life. Cleanliness in attitude and thoughts play an important element to become a successful person in life. External cleanliness is related to the sanitation of your home and premises. But, it is equally important to have internal cleanliness – the cleanliness of the soul. Removing garbage, dirt and foul smell, etc., are part of sanitation, which helps to maintain the cleanliness of your living surroundings.

It is an imperative factor in life, and everybody must be conscious about the importance to maintain cleanliness. A dirty mind and surrounding is indeed a reason for a person becoming sick. Therefore we have to put conscious effort to maintain a healthy atmosphere by keeping the surrounding clean and keeping oneself clean.

Is it a key to achieve our goals?

Yes, we as an individual hesitate to understand the importance and value of cleanliness in our daily routines. It is not the goal, but it plays a vital role in achieving our goals. Personal hygiene gets affected easily if we don’t take proper measures to maintain cleanliness. And an unclean state of body and mindset can easily distract you from your desired goal. It will stop you, affect your performance and capabilities of your living standard.

For leading a purposeful life, cleanliness is crucial as it complements your true worth. It helps to fight from many dangerous diseases. Consuming unhygienic food, drinking foul water or a poor living condition are a few challenging conditions makes people sick.

For a healthy lifestyle, we need to respect our environment, body, and mind. Right steps taken at the right time will help in building our nation. The enchanted beauty will bring more foreign tourists to our land which will increase the tourism business. Remember, not a single tourist would like to visit a foul land. We, ourselves encourages and strikes the places with mesmerizing beauties. Thus, we should adopt a lifestyle to nurture our surroundings.

How to maintain it?

It is our responsibility to keep the environment clean and making others to understand the importance of maintaining the environment clean. Only the sincere efforts of following certain manners could give a better surrounding. Every government has to play a vital role to carry out cleanliness awareness drives and make sure that people respect the cleanliness laws. The government needs to take strict actions against people who are responsible for littering public places and throw garbage on the roads. Keeping the neighborhood unclean is a shabby practice which causes health issues. A healthy and positive mindset with a good physique is the balance sheet of cleanliness.

Pollution is one of the primary reason for the unhygienic living condition. Making changes in the lifestyle can save our neighborhood from pollution. We have to develop a recycling culture and all materials that are recyclable should go to the recycling plant. It can stop material pollution and spoiling the environment. Purchasing the products made of non-toxic materials will help to preserve valuable resources. Let’s say, investing in reliable and durable household items and reuse them in the future instead of purchasing disposable items will help to maintain a clean environment.

To maintain a healthy environment, we need to look out for greenery and stop felling trees. Trees are an essential resource to purify and control pollution. More trees in our surroundings equal healthy environment and a fresh mindset. Water – one of the most necessary resource needs to be utilized and stored efficiently. Never allow to contaminate water.

Planting the importance of cleanliness among society is essential to motivate the individuals keeping their surrounding clean. There should be a proper awareness campaign to reinforce the need for sanitation, and it can be easy to adopt a strategy to involve students, social and service organization to be part of the drive.

A joint campaign by involving all section of the society is essential to accomplish total cleanliness of a state. If each of us can put their effort to maintain the cleanliness, then it will have a significant impact on the society. Inclusive cleanliness awareness campaign will be helpful in spreading the importance of the subject, and people will start to adopt cleaning the surrounding as their responsibility.

To see the much-awaited change, we need to take strict actions and act with sincerity. Corrective measures required instead of complaining about the pollution. Make everybody responsible for cleaning their premises by actively involving them. Students can start their effort by cleaning their school campus; government officials can engage in cleaning their office and premises, factory employees can participate in cleaning their factory and surrounding, etc. A combined effort of all sections of the society can make a lot of changes in the nation and attitude of the individuals towards cleanliness.

As we live in a society, we are a part of our surroundings, so we need to understand our responsibility as an individual, we should encourage the efforts made by others’ and contribute to ensuring a healthy surrounding. Systematic collection and segregation of waste depending on the scope of recyclability should strictly implement to maintain sustainable cleanliness. For maintaining cleanliness of the environment, we need to process biodegradable and non-degradable waste separately. Similarly, for personal cleanliness, we have to keep our body clean.

Cleanliness has different meanings depending on the matter of discussion. With regard to religion, cleanliness is the state of being pure, without moral contamination. When the subject matter is on the environment, it is the state of being free from dirt. Environmental cleanliness is what most people are familiar with because of the daily interaction with the environment and the impact they have on the lives of individuals with regard to health and expectations of the society. Cleanliness of the environment include everything on the surface of the earth. There are different types of cleanliness in the environment. Mostly, the environmental cleanliness is emphasized during prevention of pollution and health education in the society. Cleanliness of religion varies with the specific religion and its beliefs. The importance of cleanliness is realized in both spiritual and physical aspects. The society s place double standard on cleanliness such that, whatever is clean is admired and fought for.

Types of Cleanliness:

There are two major types of cleanliness i.e., physical cleanliness and spiritual cleanliness. Physical cleanliness has several subtypes according to the object being cleaned. Physical cleanliness involves elimination of dirt and impurities from the body, clothes, food, houses and the outside environment. Body cleaning is done through full body bath with soap and water, handwashing practice and keeping away from dirt. Cleaning clothes is a laundry process whereby manual washing by hands can be done or machine washing. Cleaning the environment is through collection of dirt in the environment and disposing them appropriately, while observing the purity of all the three aspects of the environment i.e., air, water and land. When handling food, cleanliness should be observed through hand washing and using of clean cooking and eating utensils so as to prevent ingestion of dirt. The houses and household items should also be kept clean especially the living space, the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms because we interact with the house environment more often.

Spiritual cleanliness is basically focused on the removal of moral contamination and being pure in the faith and beliefs of the religion. In Christians, cleanliness means the forgiveness of sin and living according to the Bible doctrines. Christians also have cleanliness of conditions considered impure for example menstruation and childbirth. Christians lay strong emphasis on hygiene in humans. In Islam, cleanliness means the cleanliness of hearts of individuals and the good manners of members of the society. Muslims believe that purification of hearts of individuals from feelings of negativity and bad vices like jealousy enables the society to stay peaceful at all times. Muslims also believe that cleanliness from conditions that are considered ritually impure is important. Hindus believe that cleanliness is a divine quality that should be practiced by individuals. Bhagavad Gita describes cleanliness with relation to the Hindu society virtues and qualities that individuals must acquire in order to be given grace by God. Hindus also perform cleanliness through visiting the seven rivers to bathe and purify their minds.

Cleanliness is a vital component of human life both physically and spiritually. Spiritual cleanliness is important in being on the right with your God and following the beliefs and rituals of your religion. On the other hand, physical cleanliness is important in the wellbeing and existence of humanity.

Cleanliness is necessary for health and wellness of individuals and the society. Health and cleanliness relate to each other and influence each other. In order to be of good health, one should practice hygiene. Hygiene is basically the practice of maintaining good health and preventing diseases through cleanliness. Cleanliness of the body, food and environment contribute to the wellbeing of an individual health wise. Cleanliness prevents disease because dirt usually harbors infective pathogens that cause disease to human beings when they get exposed to them. Hygienic practices are highly advocated for by health professionals because it is better to prevent a disease than to wait and seek treatment for it. Hygienic practices prolong the lives of individuals because they will be free of illnesses.

Safety is enabled through cleanliness of the environment. The environment that we interact with often needs to be clean so that accidents can be prevented. For example, in the workplace, daily cleaning will ensure that there are no water spills on the floor that could cause a fall. Clearing bushes around homes provide safety from harmful insects and animals like snakes. Cleaning not only involves the act of clearing bushes and washing floors, but also the organization of the environment. Through organization, harmful objects can be put away so that accidents can be prevented in the environment.

Brand protection can be achieved through cleanliness. In environmental cleanliness, buildings and the surrounding environment are cleaned and organized. As a marketing strategy, cleanliness is an advantage for the brand because it will portray the brand as organized and conducive for human interaction. In this competitive world, cleanliness is a priority consideration for brands. In the food industry, cleanliness is what people look at before they can engage because health well-being is important for individuals.

Cleanliness also enables the extension of a lifespan of an object. With tools and instruments, cleanliness is emphasized because dirt causes reduction of the lifespan like in metallic objects, rust causes destruction of the tools and instruments. In buildings, cleanliness also preserves the integrity and enables longer durability.

Cleanliness is a moral virtue that is admired. When a person is clean, social relations and interactions become easier because society views dirty people as a nuisance and they are inapproachable. Cleanliness is attractive and admirable in the society.

In conclusion, cleanliness in the lives of individuals is unavoidable. Everything surrounding the life of an individual is viable for cleanliness in order to maintain functionality and development. Spiritual cleanliness is mostly focused on purity of self before God and humanity in all religions although the methods of purification are different for each religion. Physical cleanliness is beneficial with regard to human interaction and with the environment in terms of health, safety and lifespan.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The soul of India lies in its villages.”

According to me it stands true.

A village is a place where you can find hope, inspiration and most  importantly  a happy and peaceful life. In recent times, most of our cities are unlivable- congested and potholed roads, overflowing drains, erratic power and water  supply, garbage strewn around so much as to cause accidents. In  contradiction to this there are villages.

Early in morning the artistic golden sun gets up like a baby and starts painting  the dark black sky into a bright blue one. The milky, bright clouds get up from  sleep and start travelling around the sky, visiting the wonderful environment.

Next to the mountains and near to the forest there is a waterfall with ivory  white water splashing down the river as if someone was spilling a glass of milk. Everyone loves to spend their time in such a place.

Here, I would like to introduce you , my village Sarahara. It is a big and ancient  village, situated in the district of Khordha ,Odisha. It is self-controlled and self reliant in most ways. Moreover our village is free from all kinds of pollution  and  has also been declared as the 6th clean village in India and it’s a matter of pride for everyone residing there.

There are sufficient green fields all around it, growing more than sufficient  granary for whole population of our village. There is a mesmerizing scene of a  tan coloured smart chubby farmer with a checked shirt driving along his  tractor on the muddy road. Long, tall brown and green paddy fields looks like someone has spread a green dusty bed sheet.

This is possible due to everyone’s collective effort in maintaining the village  and their houses. Actually our village granary production has been exporting, that means it produce excess to sell it for others. My village is far away from  the noise of the city, surrounded by flourishing fields filled with crops. The air  feels lighter and cleaner than it does in cities because of a lack of factory  pollution. Being in the village allows me to interact more closely with flora and  fauna.

The small, colourful and cute butterflies dance all around the environment, looking for sweet nectar. The flower’s fragrance fills the whole air, making the   morning pleasant. I can still remember this scene when I am away from my  village feeling caged in this lockdown. The houses here are on stilts and with  thatched roofs.They are arranged in a linear fashion behind barbed wire fences.  The sea is just a stone’s throw away and is lined by tall swaying  coconut trees, in our village.

In the afternoon when the sun is high up in the sky, the village men have a  quiet siesta in shady spots with the melodious sea breeze whispering into  their ears. The women folk in their vermilion sarongs gather around, chewing  betel leaves and exchanging latest gossips. The sky then becomes a mixture  of orange, yellow and golden hues. The sun retreats majestically and its  fainting rays slowly disappear. The moon peers out of the clouds like a shy  bride. In moonlight, the sea glistens.

Cleanliness adds more value to my village. Since good habits are contagious, it is possible in our part to teach neighbours and uneducated about the  importance of cleanliness, by being a role model. We should also be mindful  towards this habit. We should stop others from throwing waste at undesignated places.

It is the cumulative effort of all of us which can help us build a clean India  someday.

Cleanliness is the state of being clean. People should enhearten this rather than forcing it. Sanitation is a pleasant habit that can enhance the quality of living as all of its kind carries equal weight. Mostly, parents and teachers must encourage this habit from early to children. This will make sure of the awareness of cleanliness. 

It is not a hard work to finish, rather it is very easy, and so on shouldn’t make the mistake of compromising with cleanliness. It is crucial for the health and wellbeing of both human beings and animals. 

Cleanliness is also a state or habit of the surrounding ourselves of being free from dirt that is being clean. It is only achieved by cleaning yourself through cleaning activities and other surrounding activities. It is a pleasant habit to live a healthy lifestyle. 

One must know and make other people known that cleanliness is not someone else responsibility, rather it is our responsibility to be cleaned and also make the environment clean . One should start from one’s own home and school, colleges, institutions, societies, and various organizations. It is not a one-day activity; rather must be done daily to keep everything clean. 

This is the greatest virtue everyone must follow that to enhance the standard of living. Further, it must be done happily and peacefully, but sometimes it is done forcefully and not done properly. We must inculcate the habit of cleanliness among kids during their early age to keep diseases away. 

Aspects of Cleanliness

We know hygiene and disease prevention as the two aspects associated with cleanliness. Maintaining hygiene doesn’t mean keeping yourself clean, rather it includes your home, neighborhood , city and also keeping your surroundings and country clean. In this way, cleanliness will have a more social and cultural impact on society. 

Rules of Cleanliness

There are different rules of cleanliness, and also some major roles of using clean things for cleaning. If one uses dirty things to clean something, it will make other things also dirty. 

Now, a toilet must be separated from the house and should have doors to prevent infection and diseases. After using the toilet, we must wash our hands with hand-wash or soap. 

There must be first aid material available in your organization or house to prevent unique types of infections. 

We must wash everything after using it to prevent the generation of harmful bacteria and increasing their production that will be very harmful. Also, we must take proper cleaning precautions while cleaning dangerous things.

Impacts of Cleanliness on Our Lives:

With cleanliness, it is for every stage of life, and so plays a crucial role in daily activity and living. In education, we must identify cleanliness to impact learning.

The mindset of students is influenced by the surrounding that influences the ability of students to learn. Dirty surroundings are not conducive for learning as it instills stress and reduced ability for students to learn. 

Apart from education , even in the workplace, this same concept applies because of the surrounding place influences productivity. A clean environment will enhance productivity as employees will work with a positive mindset free from stress. Further achievement will be more in clean surroundings as compared to a dirty one. 

In health, cleanliness is crucial as hygienic practices contribute to good health. A dirty surrounding predisposes people to disease that affects the ability to perform activities resulting in less productivity. 

Social relationships are built by interacting with people. Here, personal hygiene serves as a crucial aspect in building social relations as it is difficult to approach a dirty person as they will have an unpleasant body odor, bad breath and so we will limit the interaction because of discomfort. 

Effects of Cleanliness

There are various positive effects of cleanliness on the surroundings and also on the human body. Cleanliness keeps infections and diseases away from us and helps us in living a beautiful and clean life. It also helps us in physical and psychological development. 

If the food is nutritious and clean, we must eat it with washed hands to get the entire nutrient and keep disease away. A clean environment also renders us fresh feeling that helps us in living a better life, keeps us always fresh, and getting relief from all kinds of stress .

Importance of Cleanliness

Similar to the necessities of life like food, water, shelter, cleanliness also holds great importance in life. It is one of the essential things needed for a healthy living. The first importance of cleanliness is that it means the absence of disease and keeping one hygienic and refreshed on a personal level. 

Also, it lowers the chances of any bacteria or viruses to harm us. When you keep the environment clean and stay clean, you’ll less likely to fall ill. Then, you can also enjoy good health and lead an active lifestyle-enhancing your lifespan and keeping yourself physically fit.

In the same way, cleanliness in our surroundings will mean enhanced healthiness and beauty. It will not only beautify the surroundings rather also make it more attractive. It will help to attract more tourists to enhance the economy of the country and earning a wonderful name for the country in the eyes of foreigners. 

Shortly, cleanliness is important for one’s spiritual health and environmental development of one’s body and country. 

The older people never eat prior to bathing and doing the worship that makes them fit. Not only that, cleanliness renders employment to many people, resolving unemployment and poverty.

Way to maintain Cleanliness

It is never hard to maintain cleanliness and so crucial to do it for a healthy life. When we talk about our personal lives, we can maintain cleanliness by bathing regularly. It is also very crucial to wash hands prior to eating as this will make sure no bacteria will enter your body. 

Also, we must always consume clean water and eat healthy food. Avoid eating out often and drinking water from unclean sources. It will help in personal hygiene. You must also trip your nails timely before they grow long.

Long nails are very dirty and will have dirt under hands all the time. Further, maintain the habit of flossing and brushing twice a day for oral hygiene. 

For the environment, you must clean your house daily to get rid of dust. Never litter the roads of your city to keep them clean and don’t throw chips packets out of the car window; rather, keep it with you and throw it in the dustbin.

Further, avoid using plastic bags and encourage people to recycle and reuse. Try to plant more trees and make the surroundings cleaner and healthier. 

We should teach the following things for good health:

• Take a bath every day
• Always wash hands with a good sanitizer before and after eating
• Always wear washed and clean clothes
• Clean your home and surrounding regularly
• Cover the cooked food and potable water
• Dispose of the garbage properly
• Do not litter in public places like hospitals, parks, society and streets
• Do not allow the water to stagnate, as it will be the breeding place for mosquitoes and might lead to diseases such as malaria, dengue and more
• Maintain personal hygiene
• Ensure a healthy mind and body

Challenges in Cleanliness

Lack of resources can prevent cleanliness and so to maintain it; one must need water , detergents, and other supplies such as cleaning equipment. Sometimes, the resources will be unavailable, and so cleaning might be compromised.

Here, another challenge is the availability of labor. Since cleaning is working and needs effort from people, some lookout and so cleanliness gets overlooked and unachievable. 

We must all out a bit to maintain cleanliness in and out of the region we live in. Actually, for this purpose, govt must start the cleanliness projects and educate and teach pleasant habits among the citizens of the country.

We must also be mindful of our practices. We must stop others from throwing waste and undesignated places. This effort will help build a clean country someday. 

In conclusion, everyone must maintain cleanliness, whether it be an individual effort or collective effort of the Govt. We can learn and be a part of it and make earth greener and cleaner.

We find that cities are highly polluted and dirty. Not just the pollution makes the cities dirty, but people of cities have a bad sense of cleanliness and throw away garbage and litter places with dirt, dust etc.

We can find heaps and piles of garbage strewn on the streets, uncollected for days together, emanating a stinky smell, attracting flies and spreading infections and diseases.

Not only this is harmful for our health, but brings a bad reputation to the big metros and cities that boast of excellent infrastructure facilities.

The bad effects of such bad hygienic conditions puts the cities on health hazard risks, together with turning away many foreign investment opportunities.

We care for our houses, similarly we ought to care for public places as well, by considering them our own and try to keep them as clean as possible.

We can see many NGOs and public awareness groups trying to spread the word about importance of maintaining cleanliness in public places as well as developing hygienic health conditions for the betterment of our own society.

The small village of Mawlynnong is a model city for maintaining cleanliness for it has a bamboo basket placed outside every little house/hut to collect garbage and throw it only inside the bamboo basket.

The place is quite famous for khasi huts that are made of bamboo. Since the village has maintained very clean living conditions, the place is able to maintain its green cover to a large extent, away from the typical sights we see in villages. The specialty of the place is the natural root bridges.

By natural root bridges, it means pathways formed for human wandering from one place to another. These pathways are nothing but natural roots tied together and woven in such a manner that they resemble a natural bridge formed by interwoven roots. Man-mad artificial bridges are just not for this place, everything here is very natural, clean and green.

The ficus trees bear such long and thick roots that the inhabitants of this village have for long created natural pathways for commuting by interweaving these roost and tying them together tightly for better strength and grip.

• It is a true way of life, people believe in cleanliness.
• Every house has a toilet with excellent water facilities since the year 2007.
• Dustbins placed in front of every house/hut.
• Leaves and dried flowers, etc on roads collected and thrown only inside the dustbin and not anywhere else.
• Plastic free village.
• No villager smokes in the village.
• People who go against the rules of the village are strictly punished.
• Garbage is placed inside a deep pit which gives manure to villagers.
• People clean houses as well as roads.
• They plant more trees.

Steps taken by villagers to preserve cleanliness at Mawlynnong

At Mawlynnong, life runs on being clean and hygienic at all times. Not only is cleanliness a mandatory routine for all the villagers, but they consider it a part of their lives to be clean, to keep their surroundings clean and hygienic. That is because, their attitude sets them apart.

They do not have a lazy attitude of piling up garbage and dumping them at open sites. They take care to collect every bit of garbage or litter and put it straight into the dustbin only.

If we happen to visit one of their homes, we would be amazed to find the spic and span kind of hygienic conditions maintained at every corner of their house.

Clean and beautiful gardens, well watered and well maintained speak about the care and nurture they provide to nature out of their own will. Villagers take care to keep every article in their house clean and clear at all times. Not just that, they take care to clean the roads that they are part of.

They take brooms and cleaning articles in their hands and literally clean and sweep the roads to keep them clean at all times.

Whatever garbage is thus collected goes into garbage baskets placed outside each home and not into open fields. They have proper waste disposal methods, which goes beyond any scientific waste disposal methods implemented in cities. Though they lack behind in education, they are good in awareness!

They are well-informed about waste management practices, practices that are close to nature and harmful to none. It is totally nature friendly, proving to be one of the best practices ever sought after and a model practice that should be followed in every village.

So after collecting all garbage, they make pits to put in this garbage, which later converts it into manure, which can be used for the plants to grow well and to provide good nourishment.

Not only this is a very healthy practice, it is totally in sync with nature and nothing goes for a waste. Plastics and plastic items are totally banned in this village and that is one of the reasons why it looks so clean and free from non bio degradable materials.

People here do not smoke and cause injury to themselves and the nature. They realize the hazards caused, and they fight to save nature and its greenery.

At a boy’s funeral, a Palestinian village gathers to bid farewell

On a bright and nearly cloudless day in the West Bank village of Burin, hundreds gathered to bury a 10-year-old boy named Amro.

Since Oct. 7, when Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel, the world’s attention has been on the war in Gaza, where local authorities say more than 32,000 Palestinians have died in the Israeli invasion.

But the war has had reverberations in the West Bank, where rising tensions between Israel and the Palestinian population have often turned violent. The official death toll over the last six months includes at least 434 Palestinians — about a quarter of them children — and 15 Israelis.

Amro Najjar was shot and killed March 4 during what the Israeli Defense Forces described as “counterterrorist activity.” He was buried the next day.

Each death is different, each family’s grief unique, but the rites for Amro capture the emotions and sorrow in a region where it seems neverending.

“We don’t have the most basic human rights or sense of security or safety,” said Ibrahim Omran, who heads Burin’s council. “We are in God’s care.”

Community members and relatives carry Amro’s body to the cemetery. When Israeli forces entered town, they ordered people to go into their homes, and shopkeepers to close their shops, Omran said. The IDF said that after “a number of suspects hurled rocks at soldiers,” Israeli forces “responded with live fire.”

Mohammad Najjar is consoled during the funeral procession for his son. Najjar was in his car with Amro and his other son, Ahmad, 8, when Israeli forces opened fire. He and the boys crouched down, he said, waiting for the shooting to stop before he drove on. The gunfire started again, leaving a spider-web hole in the windshield. Amro was struck in the head.

Amro was sitting next to his father when he was shot. Najjar said that when he realized his son had been hit, he called for help. Bystanders pulled him and the boy from the car. Ahmad was able to run off.

Naseem Majdi, 12, sits beside the body of his friend Amro on a wooden table inside a mosque in Burin. Behind him, hundreds of Palestinians line up to the call to prayer.

Community members put up martyr posters outside the mosque. “Decades of systemic impunity has created a situation where Israeli forces shoot to kill without limit,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director for the group Defense for Children Palestine.

A friend of Amro’s remembers him as someone who read the Quran diligently, played soccer, enjoyed going to school, spent time with his father and treated others with respect.

After the prayers end, mourners carry Amro’s body out of the mosque. Loud chants follow the procession toward the cemetery.

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
