How to Write the Colgate University Essays 2019-2020

colgate university supplemental essays

Colgate University is a leading private liberal arts university located in central New York. With a 2,872-person student body, a 9:1 student to faculty ratio, and an average of 17 students per class, you won’t be just another number at Colgate. With such a high academic standards comes great admissions selectivity, however —Colgate had a 22.6% acceptance rate for the class of 2022.

As a liberal arts university, Colgate takes an interdisciplinary approach to even the most technical of subjects. Every student partakes in the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, which is constantly evolving to reflect global changes. The core explores questions and patterns of thought that form the basis of society. It is interdisciplinary and connects to all majors.

Colgate is also environmentally conscious, with Green Buildings, a community garden, and locally sourced dining options; in fact, it became the first university in New York to achieve carbon neutrality.

Are you applying to Colgate University? The supplemental essays are a great place to stand out in a high-achieving applicant pool. Want to know your chances at Colgate? Calculate your chances for free right now.

Required for All Applicants

At colgate, we believe that a diverse community is a strong community. reflect on an experience that demonstrates your commitment to inclusion and diversity. (250 words).

Colgate has a great reputation of being particularly open, inclusive, and tolerant. For instance, the university has been ranked among the top 100 schools for LGBT+ students.

Given that Colgate’s culture is known for its tolerance and open-mindedness, it is critical that new additions to this community bear the same kind of cross-cultural respect, willingness to understand, and tolerance for others. These are the kinds of character traits and personal values you want to emphasize in your essay.

That being said, you may be wondering how to elucidate these kinds of traits in the essay itself. Note that Colgate has already outlined the exact kinds of topics they want you to discuss: diversity, inclusion, and community.

You should also note that the school encourages applicants to discuss how these specific experiences should have demonstrated their character and personal values, not only how they formed them. This is an important distinction to make, as a potential applicant may be initially tempted to only discuss how their specific background allowed them to develop character traits pertinent to the theme of inclusivity.

This is not exactly what Colgate University wants. They are looking to see an experience that has tested, proven, or demonstrated these kinds of character traits or personal values, in addition to learning how your specific background has allowed you to form those values.

In other words, they want to see those values in action. It is not enough to simply tell admissions officers that because you were raised in an immigrant household, today you are a person who is tolerant of individuals from all walks of life. That’s certainly a good starting point, but Colgate wants you to show that tolerance — they don’t just want to hear about it. You need to focus on a time when that tolerance was put to the test or otherwise proven.

For instance, you could focus on a time when you came into contact with someone from a background that was vastly different from yours, and describe how you interacted with that individual in a tolerant and open-minded manner. Maybe you helped the new foreign exchange student by sitting with them at lunch and helping them with their English homework. You wanted to give them support because you, too, were the “new kid” once. You also understood the culture shock they must be experiencing, as you’re a first-generation immigrant. Or, perhaps you had to work on an AP Gov project with someone whose political views were on the opposite side of the spectrum from your own. Though it may have been difficult to connect with this person at first, you put in the work and not only sought tolerance, but rather, tried to understand their perspective with a patience many others do not have. Maybe you acted with openness because you follow many politics websites, and it’s saddening to see how derisive comments push people apart and prevent meaningful dialogue.

In short, you cannot just say that you are an inclusive, open-minded person. This needs to be clearly shown on the page. Admissions officers want you to not only show who you are today, but also what experiences have made you that person.

With over 500 liberal arts and sciences colleges in the United States, what inspired you to apply to Colgate? (260 words)

In essence, this prompt is asking “Why Colgate?”. It is not enough to respond to this prompt with generic sentiments about wanting a smaller class size or the breadth of curriculum offered by a liberal arts and sciences college. To start addressing this prompt, you may have to do some research (the school’s site is a great starting point).

Dig into programs and extracurriculars that pique your interest, as well as your major’s departmental offerings and available concentrations. If anything catches your eye, explore it further until you feel confident speaking about the opportunity in detail, and how it helps you achieve your goals.

Here’s a good and bad example:

Bad: Colgate’s amazing biology program appeals to me because I have always been fascinated with the inner workings of marine animals’ cells.

Good: I am really intrigued by Colgate’s freshwater marine biology concentration, especially the hands-on component. I can see myself embarking on investigative research projects to observe the critters at Lake Moraine.

The former response is vague, and the resource mentioned can be found at almost any school. This latter response demonstrates a genuine interest in a unique opportunity while creating imagery that makes the sentence more vivid in readers’ minds.

A commonly forgotten component of the “Why School” essays are extracurriculars and social life. College isn’t only about academics, but also what you do outside of the classroom. You should also look into extracurriculars or clubs that you would like to join, and tie them into your current interests. This is a way to show genuine interest in Colgate’s specific offerings. For example, you could say something along the lines of: “As someone who is very environmentally conscious, I started a month-long educational initiative at my high school, during which we hosted workshops on how to live more sustainably. Some of my favorite topics were slow travel and how to reduce waste while eating out. At Colgate, I look forward to RecycleMania; participating in this competition will allow me to continue educating others on how to reduce our environmental impact.”

Colgate University 2020-21 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide

Regular Decision:

Colgate University 2020-21 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 2 essays of 150-200 words, 1 list

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Oddball , Community

To offer each applicant the opportunity to share additional information in their application, Colgate offers optional supplementary questions. Students can choose to respond to any or all of the essay prompts.

Question 1: A great institution is diverse. It brings students of different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, and religions to campus. Colgate recognizes this and exposes students to a rich variety of perspectives and backgrounds in their educational and social experiences. Tell us in 150-200 words how you have prepared to immerse yourself in a community such as this or how you look forward to growing as a result of your experience at Colgate.

Admissions wants to know that you value inclusivity and thrive in diverse settings. So, you have two options: Tell admissions a story about getting involved in a diverse community, or write about why you are excited about joining Colgate’s eclectic student body. If you go with a story, start by thinking about the experiences you’ve had that have drawn you out of your shell or comfort zone and introduced you to new concepts, ideas, or ways of living. Maybe you joined the Robotics Club at school and made friends with peers you would have never met otherwise. Perhaps you got involved with the debate team and had to learn quickly about effective communication and the ability to see things from different perspectives. If you’ve lived a pretty sheltered life up until this point, don’t feel overwhelmed by this question — instead of looking to your past, focus on your future. How do you hope to blossom as a result of your experience at Colgate? Are you looking forward to leaving your small Midwestern town and meeting people from all different backgrounds? Do you hope to gain perspective and expand your horizons? However you approach this prompt, we encourage you to focus on how joining a diverse community will benefit your education.

Question 2: Colgate cultivates a skilled and engaged student body. Through their achievements, our students reflect the University’s reputation as a great place to pursue one’s academic interests. Tell us in 150-200 words about an academic or personal experience that highlights your skill and potential as a Colgate student.

Colgate wants to accept motivated applicants who are keen to take advantage of the opportunities available to them on campus. So, use this response as an opportunity to tell admissions about a time you accomplished a goal or succeeded academically. Maybe you created a graphic design club at your school to further develop your skills with friends after classes were over. Are you a natural leader? Do you often think outside the box? Perhaps you won your school’s science fair and plan to continue thinking creatively about solutions to 21st century problems next year on campus. Are you innovative? Do you love a good challenge? If nothing immediately comes to mind, try jotting down the academic accomplishments you’re most proud of. If you can’t think of anything, try asking a family member or loved one — we’re sure grandma has an idea or two! 😉

Question 3: The academic community at Colgate is shaped by the unique talents, character, and personality of each student. Please finish each sentence in 75 characters or less so we can learn more about you.

I am fascinated by… i want to learn all i can about… my favorite book is… my role model is… in the future, i hope to … one thing i would change is… i wish… i am most challenged by… in 5 years, i….

You’ve been limited to less than the length of a tweet for each answer, so you’d better make every word (and character) count! No pressure or anything. These prompts don’t have time for generalities or gentle introductions, so you’ll have to get straight to the point. The more specific your words are, the more likely they are to stick with admissions officers. If you can paint a funny picture or display a knack for wit, take this chance, but don’t force it; humor is not the only way to leave an impression. You also don’t have to think of this as filling in the blanks, but more like filling in any blanks still left in your application. Anything that doesn’t feel like it merits a full essay can go here as a tweet, hot take, punchline, or elegantly-worded sentence.

Submit the  Early Decision Agreement (PDF)  with the signatures of the student, a parent/guardian, and a guidance counselor.

Recommendations must be from core academic teachers who worked with a student in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.

The guidance counselor recommendation should detail academic and personal preparedness for post-secondary education.

An official high school transcript will display courses and grades for all years of high school attended. If your high school does not provide a transcript in English, we require an official original transcript and an official English translation.

Colgate defines mid-year grades as the first semester or first trimester grades from your final year of high school. If these grades are not available by the Early Decision deadline, that does not impact your application status; Colgate requires this item to be submitted by February 15. Let us know if you or your school counselor have any additional questions about this.

Optional Application Materials

Colgate offers applicants the opportunity to lend depth to their application through optional supplemental writing prompts. These prompts are not meant to feel like essays; they are simply an added perspective. Responses to these prompts provide the Admission team greater insight into who the applicants are and the many ways they may flourish at Colgate.

Applicants can choose to respond to any or all of the prompts, which will be available in their Colgate applicant portal after their application has been received. Applicants should submit responses to the optional supplemental prompts based on personal preference. Those who choose not to submit responses will be at no disadvantage in the application review process.

Deadlines for applicants choosing to submit supplemental essay responses:

Early Decision I: December 1

Early Decision II and Regular Decision: February 1

Submission of SAT and ACT scores is optional for all applicants through the 2026-2027 application season.

When students choose to submit standardized test scores, this information provides additional data to demonstrate their overall achievement. When students choose not to submit standardized test scores, the Office of Admission evaluates achievement through all other elements of the application. Students will be at no disadvantage if they choose not to submit test scores. Important information is listed below.

  • Applicants should indicate on their application whether or not they would like their scores considered.
  • Colgate will accept self-reported ACT or SAT score results. Applicants may list ACT or SAT results in their Common Application, Coalition on Scoir, or Questbridge Application. Additionally, students may send a copy of their score reports to [email protected].
  • Colgate accepts results from both the paper and digital formats of the SAT, and will superscore across formats.
  • Colgate superscores both the ACT and the SAT. Colgate's school code for the SAT is 2086. Colgate's school code for the ACT is 2702.
  • To determine how their scores compare to current Colgate students, applicants may view the Academic Profile on the First-Year Class Profile . This may be a helpful tool when deciding whether or not to submit standardized test scores.
  • After receiving an admission decision, admitted applicants who chose to have their scores considered will be required to send official scores from the testing agency.
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS, or DET scores are required for non-native English speakers who do not study at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction. These scores must be sent from an official testing agency. Colgate's school code for the TOEFL is 2086. Please consult the webpage for International Applicants for more information.

Supplementary Materials

Students wishing to document specific extracurricular achievements in high school may submit supplementary materials for review with their applications.

Applicants are welcome to supplement their application with a SlideRoom submission to showcase creative accomplishments related to the arts. Every submission will be assessed by a Colgate faculty member and considered as part of the holistic application review. Colgate will accept submissions in visual art and media (of any kind), music (instrumental, vocal, and composition), theater/musical recordings, and dance portfolios. Submissions may include more than one medium, and all mediums should be indicated on the SlideRoom submission form. If you would like to include other supplementary materials in your application, such as creative written work, videos highlighting volunteer efforts, or school speeches, please consider using the Digital Presence. Additionally, please make sure that submissions highlight your individual ability so that our faculty are able to identify and assess you as an artist. Submission deadlines coincide with application and financial aid deadlines for all application plans, and we cannot accept submissions for review via email or after the deadline has passed.

Submitting material for review does not require a commitment to a major, nor will it impact academic placement. No audition or placement material is required to declare a major in the arts. Technical specifications for submissions can be found on the SlideRoom website . The submission fee is $12.00 USD. Applicants receiving a Common Application fee waiver will automatically have this fee waived in SlideRoom. This fee will also be automatically waived for all students applying via QuestBridge. Colgate is unable to provide SlideRoom fee waivers. If you have questions about a SlideRoom submission, please email [email protected] . If you have questions about a specific major or faculty/student organization, please email the academic department directly.

To document athletic achievement, please follow the guidelines in the application and send tapes and talent resumes directly to a coach.

c/o (Coach for your sport) Department of Athletics Colgate University Hamilton, NY 13346

Some applicants may wish to share additional digital materials which showcase their background, talents, or creativity. Some examples include, but are not limited to, creative works, social media profiles, performances, online boutiques, and community pages. Applicants are welcome to share the web address/URL on the Colgate supplement as part of the Common Application, Coalition Application, or Questbridge Application.

We often receive other samples of students' achievements in fields such as journalism, student government, community service, etc. Such information is most helpful when it is a concisely presented sample of your best work or accomplishment. Such supplements should complement, but not replace, the effort to complete the application questions with regard to activities and involvement.

Challenges in obtaining required application items

Any student experiencing difficulty obtaining a required application item or meeting an application deadline as a result of local restrictions, natural disaster, or other emergency should contact the Office of Admission at  [email protected]  or 315-228-7401 to discuss these concerns and options.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin

  • Scientific Program

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
