General further education colleges offer high-quality academic, technical and vocational education to people of all ages. There are 158 further education colleges in England, educating hundreds of thousands of students each year.

The colleges offer a broad suite of qualifications and courses in levels 1 to 6, including higher national certificates (HNCs), higher national diplomas (HNDs), A levels, apprenticeships, T levels, GCSEs, BTECs, Cambridge technicals, post-graduate degrees and many more. There’s also a huge range of choices in skills to study: from engineering and hospitality, to IT and construction. You can often also study A levels at a general further education college.

Lecturers have often come to teaching after a successful career in their respective industries, which means that students are taught to demonstrate industry-level skills, behaviours and attitudes. Further education colleges take pride in their facilities too, and inside many buildings, you’ll find high specification, industry-standard facilities.

Overview of the UK's further education sector

The UK boasts a diverse and wide-ranging further education sector that provides opportunities for school leavers, young adults and mature students

FE sector facts

  • Further education includes study after secondary school.
  • College is for people of all ages, with courses free for students aged 16 to 18.
  • 1.6 million students go to college in England each year to develop their career, progress to university, engage in further education or increase their employability.

What is further education?

On GOV.UK it states that further education (FE) includes any study after secondary education that doesn't form part of an undergraduate or graduate degree.

These post-secondary school qualifications are delivered by FE, sixth form and specialist colleges that aim to provide top quality academic, technical and professional education and training for both young people and adults.

The Education and Training Foundation (ETF), the professional body for FE training and standards in England, has produced a Guide to the FE System in England .

How is the FE system structured?

According to the AoC, there are 270 colleges in the UK (June 2023):

  • 225 colleges in England
  • 26 in Scotland
  • 13 in Wales
  • 6 in Northern Ireland.

UK colleges are represented by the following organisations specific to each home nation:

  • Association of Colleges (AoC) - The membership organisation representing FE, sixth form, tertiary and specialist colleges in England.
  • Colleges Scotland - The collective voice of the college sector in Scotland.
  • Colleges Wales - An education charity that promotes the public benefit of further education in Wales.
  • Northern Ireland (NI) Direct - Oversees the two university colleges, six FE colleges and an agri-food and land-based college in NI.

Most colleges are referred to as general FE colleges, but there are a number of different types of institution.

For instance, of the 225 colleges in England:

  • 158 are general FE colleges
  • 44 sixth form colleges
  • 11 land-based colleges
  • 10 institutes of adult learning (formerly specialist designated colleges)
  • two art, design and performing arts colleges.

Who are college courses aimed at?

Anyone aged 16 and over can go to college, although the AoC reported that the majority of college income for 2020/21 (£3.63billion), accounting for 55% of total spending, was focused on 16-18 education.

It's unsurprising that sixth form and general FE colleges providing qualifications at A-level standard benefit most from the funding, especially as education is still free for students in this age group.

Colleges are inclusive places to learn, with over a fifth (21%) of students studying in England in 2022/23 having indicated some form of learning difficulty and/or disability.

What FE courses can you study?

Widely available FE courses include:

  • BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council)
  • Higher National Certificates (HNCs)

See college courses for an overview of the main FE qualifications studied at college.

However, while these FE courses are offered by colleges rather than universities, some colleges also run undergraduate programmes.

Read our guide to undergraduate qualifications .

It was also revealed that colleges train around 1,000 apprentices, so you may wish to explore apprenticeships in more detail. You can learn more about vocational college courses at AoC - About colleges .

Can I still go on to university?

Some FE qualifications can be topped up to a full degree, so if you're thinking of going to university but still aren't sure, the course may offer credit should you choose to carry on with study after the college course.

What are the modes of study at college?

Similar to university, you can choose between full and part-time study for the majority of courses. While some will require you to spend a significant amount of time in the classroom, colleges often use a blended learning approach, with online distance learning complementing the traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online college courses, for qualifications such as A-levels and BTECs, are also very popular. This is because you'll get the opportunity to study and achieve a qualification without the need to visit the college in person. The course will typically involve interacting with tutors and other learners online through lectures, training sessions, webinars and chat forums.

Popular FE providers include the Open Study College and Online Learning College , while The Open University offers qualification options at undergraduate level and above. You can also explore free courses as signposted by the National Careers Service (NCS) .

This flexible approach to learning allows students to study at a time and place that fits in with their lifestyle, perfect if there isn't a local college accessible from your area. Read more about the benefits of online learning .

Am I eligible for student finance?

As mentioned, FE college courses are free for 16 to 18-year-olds, but for adult learners (anyone 19 and over), tuition fees are likely to be involved. Even younger students can still claim education-related costs through the government's 16 to 19 Bursary Fund .

If you're studying in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you may be able to claim for Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) .

When it comes to online learning with private course providers, you'll certainly need to pay course fees. For instance, if you're taking A-levels, you'll need to consider exam and invigilation fees as well as tuition costs, while for some courses, there's additional fees for the practical aspects of the programme.

There are a range of grants and loans offered at a local level for adult education. For example, see the booklet on Fees, finance and funding for adult learners from The Manchester College .

For undergraduate courses at college, you can consider applying for government support in the form of tuition fee and maintenance loans. Read more about student loans and finance at undergraduate level.

Can international students go to college in the UK?

International students can apply to go to college in the UK, but you'll need to have sorted out your visa first before entering the country.

As Britain has now left the European Union (EU), students from European countries will require 'settled' status under the EU Settlement Scheme to live and study here. However, in many cases, college fees are still generally quite reasonable.

The AoC has revealed that the average tuition fees for international students studying a further education qualification is £8,200 per year, with Level 3 courses proving the most popular.

As colleges are renowned for providing a pipeline for those progressing to university, a high proportion of international students choose to move on to HE courses.

They also found that as far as the international marketplace is concerned, the main drawing power in coming to the UK for FE-level study is to achieve A-levels, take English language courses and undertake teacher training .

Read more about studying in the UK at degree level.

You can also take a look at the scholarships and funding available from the British Council - and get information on how to apply to study in the UK .

I decided to come to DFEI as I had heard great things from people who attended in the past and went onto to study Nursing in university. I also wanted to attend DFEI because I knew it would be a good opportunity to get a taste of nursing and see if it suited me.

What I liked about DFEI was that the course included both theory and practice. The course had a different range of subjects that were all very interesting and relevant to nursing. All my teachers were all so helpful when it came to assignments and helping you understand the tasks that needed to be done.

I am now looking forward to starting in Trinity and doing my work experience in a great hospital.

Alarm over sticker price overlooks many nuances of college affordability

It would be great if we had a college pricing system that was transparent, sensible, and affordable. Unfortunately, that largely doesn’t exist. But it also does not help when scare tactics are used in identifying the failures of the system. Susan D’Agostino’s April 19 op-ed falls into that trap (“Six reasons why $90,000 college costs are bad news even if few pay that amount”).

I agree with D’Agostino that colleges do a poor job of communicating their pricing. Lower- and middle-income students have a tough time understanding need-based financial aid. Higher-income students do not know that they are likely to receive merit awards that reduce the sticker price at many institutions. For many students and families, the ultimate price that they pay is still beyond what they can afford.

However, except for students from higher-income families who attend highly selective institutions, very few students pay the sticker price. So harping on the $90,000 figure just confuses students further. It is the net price of college that reflects what students really have to pay, not the sticker price. Yes, that includes loans — a concern D’Agostino raises. When the net price is higher, students may borrow more. But for most students at most institutions, they should disregard the sticker price.

Finally, I strongly disagree with D’Agostino’s argument that financial aid is not “an antidote to exorbitant college costs.” More financial aid is the solution. Those institutions charging the highest sticker prices and meeting full need have very large endowments. They provide the most financial aid. They are the least expensive schools for lower- and middle-income students to attend (if the student can get in) because they have the resources to make that happen. Other institutions are less equipped or unable to do that because they don’t have the money. That money needs to come from somewhere, meaning either greater direct support from the state or more federal funding for financial aid. Along with better communication from the schools themselves, that is what is needed to solve the problem.

Phillip B. Levine

The writer is the Katharine Coman and A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Economics at Wellesley College and the author of “A Problem of Fit: How the Complexity of College Pricing Hurts Students — and Universities.”

Hard-working applicants shouldn’t be blinded by neon dollar signs

Families making the life-changing decision about college deserve better than misleading headlines about cost, especially when the message could make a hard-working, smart student think college isn’t worth it.

The headlines may draw clicks, but as Yvonne Abraham pointed out in a recent Metro column, for most families, college is not going to cost them $90,000 a year. In reality, it is less than half for most students, and for many low-income students, far less than that.

Other headlines question whether college is really worth it. But even critical stories often cite the obvious: For most students, it is life-changing on numerous levels. College graduates age 22 to 27 earn $24,000 a year more than their peers who did not get a degree, according to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York . By age 55, the college graduate is earning 60 percent more annually than the peer without a degree. College graduates are more likely to be employed ; to have paid vacation, sick time, and health insurance ; and in general to report that they are happier with their lives.

For their sake and the sake of our economy and the Commonwealth’s competitiveness, let’s hope kids considering college don’t just read the alarming headlines and opt out of transformative opportunities.

Why it’s a smart decision to start your college journey at Washtenaw Community College

The advertiser paid a fee to promote this sponsored article and may have influenced or authored the content. The views expressed in this article are those of the advertiser and do not necessarily reflect those of this site or affiliated companies.

Starting a college journey at Washtenaw Community College is a smart choice.

With its low tuition , the financial value alone paves the way for students to start their new careers with less or no debt burden. Smaller class sizes provide easy access to instructors, meaning more one-on-one opportunities for deeper understanding.

WCC students know this value. Over the last five years alone, 16,761 WCC alumni enrolled in four-year colleges and universities throughout Michigan and across the country, taking the next stepping stone to high-demand, high-wage jobs and dreams fulfilled.

The majority of former students who transferred — 51 percent or 8,573 alumni — enrolled at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University.

In all, former WCC students enrolled in 1,147 institutions in all 50 states, including prestigious universities like Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and storied historical Black college and universities with the help of WCC’s HBCU Pathway .

“Thanks to exceptional faculty and academic programs, our students leave confident and well prepared for continued success whether they’re transferring to a four-year university to further their education or placed directly in the workforce,” said WCC President Dr. Rose B. Bellanca.

Robotics engineer Fedor Dolgachev agrees. Dolgachev’s interest in robotics was sparked while a student at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor. His courses at WCC helped him narrow down his career dreams.

After earning an Associate of Applied Science in Mechatronics in 2021, he transferred to Kettering University and pursued a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He now works as a continuous improvement engineer, managing the automation processes at Net Shaped Solutions in Canton, an appliance, electrical and electronics manufacturer.

“I got a full-ride scholarship, so WCC was a great way to avoid lots of debt and give me time to save up for Kettering,” Dolgachev said. “Because of the Michigan Transfer Agreement , I was able to complete many gen ed [general education] classes before I transferred over to Kettering. This saved me a whole bunch of time and money.”

Dolgachev credits WCC for introducing him to the rigors of a college education and says instructors were always willing to help.

Approximately 58% of current WCC students indicate they intend to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a higher degree.

Transfer Questions Answered

Student advisors Brittany Middlebrook & Christie Pagel answered questions about transferring from WCC to other institutions.

Q: WHAT RESOURCES DOES WCC HAVE FOR TRANSFERRING?

A:  Students at WCC have numerous transfer resources — Advising , the University Transfer Center , the Transfer to Success student club and many transfer events. We also regularly host colleagues from transfer institutions on WCC’s campus. Some students also find mitransfer.org useful.

Q: WHAT IS THE MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT?

A:  The Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) is a reciprocity agreement among community colleges in Michigan and participating four-year institutions in the state. Earning the Michigan Transfer Agreement designation — comprised of 30 credits of general education coursework — is like having a safety net, provided the student transfers to an institution that accepts the MTA. In some cases, it totally fulfills the general education coursework that students would otherwise be expected to complete at their transfer institution.

Q: WILL MY CREDITS BE ACCEPTED AT THE SCHOOLS I WANT TO GO TO?

A: Many institutions have up-to-date internal transfer equivalency databases. Michigan Transfer Network is another great resource to check course equivalencies and each individual institution’s stance on the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA). Out-of-state schools may also have data loaded into a resource like Transferology . Students should reach out to their intended transfer institutions for guidance and to better understand requirements.

Q: IS IT OK TO NOT KNOW WHAT COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY I WANT TO TRANSFER TO?

A: While in a perfect world students know from the beginning of their college journey what they want to study and where, this is rarely the case. Earning the MTA can be helpful if the student ultimately transfers to a participating institution. Meeting regularly with your advisor and attending transfer events are essential ways to get information and make sure you’re taking the right courses and steps to meet your goals.

Q: CAN I TRANSFER OUT OF STATE?

A: Yes! We routinely assist students with navigating their intended transfer universities’ websites to ensure they’re able to connect with the transfer admissions team as soon as possible. It’s crucial to understand requirements.

Q: WHAT PROGRAMS ARE BEST FOR TRANSFERRING?

A: All WCC’s Associate in Arts and Associate in Science programs are transfer-friendly because they have the MTA embedded within them. WCC offers some programs that have ‘transfer’ in their names — the Liberal Arts Transfer program, the Business Administration Transfer program and the Pre-Engineering Science Transfer program, for example.

Q: WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR DIFFERENT PROGRAMS/ MAJORS AT FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS?

A: Endless options! Try to meet with your advisor early and regularly to discuss goals — including your desired future program at the four-year level and desired future institution, etc.

Caitlin Clark's college GPA emerges as Indiana Fever star makes decision on Iowa degree

C aitlin Clark will return to Iowa as a student, intending to finish her degree and graduate. And it appears she's on track to complete her education with an impressive GPA after her grades were recently revealed.

One of the top college basketball prospects to ever enter the WNBA, the Indiana Fever were the lucky team to land the first overall pick with a generational talent such as Clark available for selection.

Clark had a decision to make last season, with another year of eligibility open to her where she could have broken further college basketball records before undoubtedly being the first pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

READ MORE: Caitlin Clark's WNBA moment soured by Indy Star reporter interaction that prompted apology READ MORE: Will Caitlin Clark play at the Olympics? Team USA admits selection 'not going to be fair'

However, Clark decided to make the step up this year, leaving behind what was a legendary career with her alma mater. Clark still intends to return to the school to finish her learning, though.

In her introductory press conference with the Indiana Fever, Clark said: "I would love to be on the Olympic team, and be in Paris. But that’s not up to me. I actually still need to earn my degree, too; I need to graduate college first, or else my mom might kill me."

This past week, Clark was named the 2023-24 Academic All-America Team Member of the Year - marking the second consecutive year that she had been named to the list.

Follow the Mirror US on Google News to stay up to date with all the latest news, sport and entertainment stories.

A graphic from the academy revealed that Clark, a marketing major, boasts an impressive 3.64 GPA.

While Clark will continue to study to graduate as a marketing major, she will also prepare to begin her WNBA career. The regular season will begin on May 14.

Clark joins the Fever off the back of an incredible senior year as a Hawkeye, smashing a multitude of records and amassing the most points ever scored in both men's and women's college basketball - averaging 31.6 points in her final year while registering 8.9 assists and 7.6 rebounds.

After being drafted, Clark told reporters: "This is a dream, this is something I wrote down on a piece of paper when I was in, like, second grade. Get a basketball scholarship. Play in the WNBA . This is something I've always wanted to do."

The Fever will look to Clark to transform their fortunes after they won just 21 games in their last two seasons before acquiring the Iowa superstar.

Clark has opened up as the fourth favorite to win the WNBA's MVP award in her rookie season, behind A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas.

Caitlin Clark's impressive grades have been revealed.
