My school first was usually held in the month of February just before our summer holidays but the preparation for the same used to start long back in the month of October. So it would take almost 4 months of rigorous preparation to conduct are three-day fest. Our school first is not just fest or a simple carnival, it was a celebration of sorts in the entire city.

Our school fest was so big that the entire region around our school was barricaded and police were called in to manage the public who were invited for the fest. Unlike other school fests where there would be just dancing and singing by students, our fest was a mega event where singers, dancers, Bollywood actors and actresses were called in to perform. As I said, it was not like any other school fest, it was a huge phenomenon and a big Public Relations event for our school.

Other than the dancing, singing and extravaganza it was during this time that the prizes for winners in sports, entertainment, academics, extracurricular and co-curricular activities were distributed to students. The prize distribution was in itself a whole day event and it was usually done by the chief guest of the event who will usually be the chief minister of the state or the governor of the state. I personally received many prices in sports and academics from the governor of the state of Karnataka.

The dancing, the singing, the lights, the arrangements, the food and more importantly the fun memories with my friends is what makes my school fest the most memorable part of my childhood. I remember how I used to collect money from my parents, neighborhoods friends and other schools to conduct our fest. Almost more than 75% of the funding came from our school authorities but the management wanted to students to learn the concept of crowd funding and as a result of which students use to collect money from various sources to conduct this fest. The responsibility of crowdfunding was usually let on the shoulders of seniors of class 10 and class 12.

The students from class 10th and 12th used to go around the city to visit educational institutions and certain companies and ask them to donate money. Our school fest was not just about dancing, singing and gala events, it was also about developing a sense of social responsibility among the kids. Our school had more than 2000 students and each of them was asked to plant a tree around the school premises on the day of our fest and water the plants every day. This is a wonderful concept because when I was in the first standard I had planted a plant and now that I am in 10th standard I can see how the plant has turned into a tree. So, the way I have grown up the tree also has grown with me.

School Carnival

The school carnival time was here. There was a carnival being held at the school situated on the next block. It brought back so many memories. The carnival was like a theme park full of exciting rides that people could enjoy throughout the day. It gives families and friends the opportunity to bond. Students got to meet each other outside a formal school setting along with their families.

The main attraction at the carnival was the huge Ferris wheel, followed by the merry-go-round. Both these attractions apart from their thrill inducing rides were famous for their colourful decorations. The first ride on the huge giant Ferris wheel gave me an instant rush of adrenaline. As the ride started, there was a lump in my throat, as the ride gained speed, the resistance to gravity built up against my body until I was unable to move. An almost imperceptible pause as the wheel reached the top of its climb allowed my body to relax in a brief state of normalcy. Then there was an assault of stomach-turning weightlessness as the machine continued its rotation and I descended back toward the earth. And this went on till the time I was dizzy, but the pure excitement of the ride was incomparable.

The next ride was the merry-go-round, with its colourful horses, giraffes, tigers and bears. The Children clamored to sit atop their favourite animal. And then the ride began, slowly at first and then picked up speed, the joy of the ride was evident from the screams that were coming from the merry-go-round. There were many more games and attractions at the carnival, but these were the ones that had the longest queue. The school carnival was memorable, more so because it was the effort of the students and teachers and they were giving the proceeds to charity. It was a fun evening.

Short Essay on the School Carnival

A school carnival or a fete as it was twenty years ago is quite different from what it is today. The present system of education has witnessed a gradual acceptance of co-curricular activities as a part of the main curriculum and therefore the expression ‘extracurricular’ activities is looked upon as a kind of blasphemy in the context of modern schools. If we look at the advertisements of most evolving international schools, the reference to ‘co-curricular activities’ (not ‘extra’) as a part of the learning experience is given supreme priority to attract customers, err… parents.

International schools (nothing remains national in global India) take great pride in proclaiming a fest or a fete where noted celebrities shall come and grace the occasion with the glamorous fragrance of their presence. But our principal in a rather humble value based ‘national’ school decided one fine day that the birthday of our honored Jawaharlal Nehru should be celebrated as a fete for the deprived children of the society.

The idea sounded good but also rather outdated to some of us. It is fine to have a fete to entertain the helpless lot who have not been as lucky as we have been, with the generosity of the Almighty.

But to do away with the glamour factor completely for the sake of our principal’s apparent dislike for celebrities seemed rather old-fashioned and backdated to us. A fete without a music band performing and without some major brands endorsing our products seemed pointless! But we as members of the student council were expected to follow his instructions and we did not dare question him. The rest of the student community also simply cowered under the impact of this not-so-tall man’s towering personality.

So, the students set up colourful stalls with different kinds of games to attract the children and as they started arriving in groups led by school authorities that cater to the needs of these deprived children, the joy and gratitude on the faces of these children started overpowering us emotionally. The joy on the face of a seven-year old as he was lifted by our teacher to shoot at the balloons was priceless.

The kids started having a ball at the various stalls, be it trying to light five candles with the same matchstick or bowling all the stumps with one ball. They tremendously enjoyed the programme that the school music and drama teams put up to entertain them. The food stalls which catered to their needs for free added to the charm of the event.

(We had to buy our stuff, though!) We loved every moment of the fete organised to entertain these children and then, something struck us! Would we have had so much joy if we ourselves did not perform to bring happiness to the lives of these children? Perhaps not! A rock band performing at the professional level would not have created the kind of chemistry that developed between these kids and us when our school rock band performed. The sense of joy and satisfaction that filled our minds when these children went home with faces shining like a thousand suns could not have been experienced if we would have merely concentrated on the glamour quotient.

The true way to go global, as our principal taught us, was to develop the spirit of humanity by sharing our joys with others who are not so lucky. A fete would be no occasion for fun with friends unless it has this sense of purpose in itself, love and joy for the neighbor who craves for the bliss that we take for granted!

The end of the school year is a fantastic time to have a little fun with your students. But that doesn’t mean you have to watch movies or play 7-Up all day long. In fact, the days go faster (and kids behave better) when they are actively engaged in learning. So why not have a Classroom Carnival?

Five fun writing prompts give students the opportunity to practice all those writing skills you’ve been teaching all year. There are prompts for personal narrative, opinion, and fiction. And, if you want to give your kids some some research to do, there could even be an informational report about designing their own carnival ride.

Being brave

You can use these writing prompts as morning work, for fast finishers, place them in centers, or use during your writing workshop time. I know your students will dive right into these fun writing assignments.

The Math activities also review several standards-based skills including:

Subtraction
Multiplication
Division

These five fun activities ask kids to purchase tickets to the carnival, plan the perfect schedule to maximize their time at the carnival, calculate how many tickets they won at various carnival games, compare the statistics of various carnival rides, and even play a game of balloon pop to solve a riddle.

There’s also a complete math board game included. This differentiated game includes a game board, spinner, and three categories of question cards. Students must solve word problems, do mental math, or deal with uh-oh setbacks as they move around the board.

Two complete versions of the game cards make differentiation easy. There is an easier version for grades 2 and 3 and a more challenging version for grades 4 and 5. The more challenging version has more difficult math concepts and calculations.

Carnival week includes a fun stem project: Build a carnival game

This engaging hands-on activity challenges students to build their very own carnival games. Students will use what they know about force and motion to create a working carnival game.

I’ve included detailed teacher directions and a day-by-day schedule to walk you through exactly how to help your students with this STEM project. It all starts with a done-for-you PowerPoint lesson on force and motion. This lesson includes everything you and your students need to know to successfully complete the challenge.

The project includes brainstorming and planning pages, a place for them to write directions for the game, and a page for self-reflection. There is even a checklist to keep them on track. You can use the included parent letter to request supplies. But don’t worry, most of the materials on the list are standard household or classroom items.

Of course, the most fun part of the STEM activity is testing out the games. So be sure to set aside time at the end of the week

Carnival Week is perfect for students in grades 2-5 . Multiple options make it super easy to differentiate these activities for your learners. Pick the activities that are just right for your class or individual students.

The game board has two complete versions for upper and lower grades.

The activities can be completed independently, with a partner, or as a whole group. You can also work with small groups to provide additional support to students.

How to Use This Resource:

There are lots of ways to use Carnival Week in the classroom. We’ve included a proposed lesson layout with a detailed schedule of which activities to use each day. But we know the end of the year can be crazy, so each reading passage, writing prompt, and math activity can stand alone. You can pick and choose activities to make them fit your classroom schedule.

Only the STEM activity requires a block of time to complete. You can spread it over five days, or devote an entire day to the project.

For an even more memorable Carnival Week, why not finish off the activity with a true classroom carnival? You don’t have to go overboard to really up the fun factor.

Your students have already done the hard work – they’ve created all the games.

All you need is a little music (don’t plan on playing it all day or you will drive yourself crazy), some balloons or streamers, and some simple snacks. Popcorn, snowcones, and lemonade will definitely be a hit with your students.

A photo booth would also be a fun addition to the day. Pick up or make some easy props and snap some photos of your kiddos having fun. Don’t forget to take pictures of the students with their games.

First things first, why are you hosting a school carnival? Before you start any planning, defining a clear fundraising goal is essential. Think about these questions to get you on track:

What are we raising money for?
How much do we need to raise?
How many people do we need to attend to achieve this goal?
What are your non-financial goals? How do you want to boost audience levels and supporter engagement?

Make your call to action something people are passionate about and will enthusiastically support. Ideally, you want it to be something that will make an impact.

2. Assemble a School Carnival Planning Team

You’ll need a solid event planning committee to handle the various carnival planning tasks. Whatever you do, don’t try and go it alone! Even if your organization works with a professional nonprofit event planner, a carnival committee is still needed to direct the planner’s activities.

The PTA/PTO (or parent-teacher group) usually takes the reins with school carnivals. There is a lot to do, so don’t forget to start planning with plenty of time. Parents, teachers, and school administrators should work together to:

Determine fundraising goals and identify how to achieve them.
Set a school carnival budget – Look for in-kind donations, but be realistic about upfront costs and how they will impact your fundraising carnival planning.

N otting Hill carnival returned this weekend, as raucous, joyous and vibrant as ever, an embodiment of multicultural Britain at its finest. This was my 12th time attending but my first as a journalist, and while part of me longed to spend the day dancing with friends, I knew I had to explore the corners of the carnival I often neglect.

This year’s event felt especially necessary. I could sense it in the crowd. Barely a month after racist riots swept the nation, the carnival offered a timely and powerful counter-narrative. Its inception in 1958 was a response to racist riots, and more than 60 years later it remains essential for ensuring that Black and other minority communities are seen and heard in Britain. But the carnival has also evolved.

Today, the carnival’s scale has allowed it to transcend its roots. When I stopped for food I chatted with Joseph, an employee at Bella Bell’s Kitchen, a family-run affair serving a blend of Jamaican and Mauritian dishes. He only had two minutes to talk as the queues were building and I could see his mum keeping a kind but close eye. His sister’s pepper prawns were the thing to try, apparently, but they weren’t on the menu today, so I stuck to the jerk. Joseph, now in his seventh year at the carnival, told me he’d keep coming back because “there aren’t that many Caribbean or ethnic minority festivals like this in the UK, so it’s nice that we can come together and celebrate our heritage”.

Mike, Maurice and Treble Tee from Rampage Sound: ‘We’ve worked a lot in west London and you really get that genuine feel that carnival is just a given, it’s embedded in the culture here,’ says Treble Tee.

For a music lover, the variety, authenticity and sheer number of sound systems at the carnival is mouthwatering. From reggae, R&B and drum’n’bass to calypso, house and dancehall, it’s all here. Rampage, Saxon, Rapattack, Channel One, King Tubby’s – the list goes on.

For me, no one does it like Aba Shanti-I, though, a true bastion of the UK’s illustrious reggae/dub scene. I could barely contain my excitement as I tiptoed towards him as he was setting up for the day. Calm and oozing a cool that few possess, he spoke about what carnival means to him. “It’s a celebration of our culture, a celebration of our ancestors, of all the struggles they went through to bring diversity to this place.” Aba Shanti-I may be of “Jamaican extraction”, he says, “but it’s a UK phenomenon” and there’s a clear sense of pride when he talks about growing up in Hackney. He is in his 31st year at the carnival and I asked him about the endurance of the community spirit here.

“It’s not there so much after the carnival,” he tells me, “but boy, during the actual carnival itself, yeah, it’s definitely here. And it’s nice to see other people from other places come and enjoy our celebration.” He’s not wrong: I regularly attend his quarterly sessions at Earth in Hackney, but there’s something uniquely powerful about seeing him at the carnival. Nestled slightly away from the madness, where East Row meets Southern Row, his stage is packed all day with people fully immersed in a sonic journey that floats between the spiritual, the psychedelic and the straight-up groovy.

I stopped by Gladdy Wax, another favourite sound system of mine, and got tapped on the shoulder by an energetic woman called Madge. “Ah you know where to come to then?” she said. “This is the only place.” I nodded in agreement, before two mods began skanking next to me in front of the stack. I approached them and got chatting with Fabian, who told me that he and Mattias were from Malmö in Sweden and were attending their 10th carnival. Why did they keep coming back? “Because it’s the best,” he said. “I feel like I love everyone here, and I usually don’t love everyone.” Huge reggae fans but living in Sweden, they both romanticised the punk rock, ska and mod movements but found them always just out of reach. It’s just another reason why they feel at home at the carnival, and they’ll no doubt return next year.

For me, the inclusivity of carnival instils a deep sense of pride about British metropolitan life. Yet each year it faces criticism, often due to reports of antisocial behaviour and violence. But given the numbers in attendance, these incidents are relatively few, and the fixation on this narrative seems to me a deliberate attempt to overshadow the overwhelming majority who bask in the carnival’s warmth and inclusivity. Jay, who grew up in west London, says that if there’s abundant crime, he’s never seen this side. “It’s all about seeing communities come together and celebrate their love for music and food.” It’s the reason he resisted the urge to move to east London like so many of his friends. For as long as carnival remains, west London will always be unique.

It was sad saying goodbye to another carnival weekend but the spirit of it hangs in the air as the summer signs out. It could have been my favourite one yet, mainly because of how much of it I got to see. And it was good to be reminded that despite the adversity, nowhere in the world does diversity like London does, and the carnival is a testament to the strength found in that diversity. To see it as just a party would be unfitting; it’s a powerful and loud statement of resilience, hope, pride and community. I am already looking forward to next year.

In July 2017, I wrote an article about toplessness for Vogue Italia. The director, actor, and political activist Lina Esco had emerged from the world of show business to question public nudity laws in the United States with 2014’s Free the Nipple . Her film took on a life of its own and, thanks to the endorsement from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, and Willow Smith, eventually developed into a whole political movement, particularly on social media where the hashtag #FreeTheNipple spread at lightning speed. The same year as that piece, actor Alyssa Milano tweeted “me too” and encouraged others who had been sexually assaulted to do the same, building on the movement activist Tarana Burke had created more than a decade earlier. The rest is history.

In that Vogue article, I chatted with designer Alessandro Michele about a shared memory of our favorite topless beaches of our youth. Anywhere in Italy where water appeared—be it the hard-partying Riviera Romagnola, the traditionally chic Amalfi coast and Sorrento peninsula, the vertiginous cliffs and inlets of Italy’s continuation of the French Côte d’Azur or the towering volcanic rocks of Sicily’s mythological Riviera dei Ciclopi—one was bound to find bodies of all shapes and forms, naturally topless.

In the ’90s, growing up in Italy, naked breasts were everywhere and nobody thought anything about it. “When we look at our childhood photos we recognize those imperfect breasts and those bodies, each with their own story. I think of the ‘un-beauty’ of that time and feel it is actually the ultimate beauty,” Michele told me.

Indeed, I felt the same way. My relationship with toplessness was part of a very democratic cultural status quo. If every woman on the beaches of the Mediterranean—from the sexy girls tanning on the shoreline to the grandmothers eating spaghetti al pomodoro out of Tupperware containers under sun umbrellas—bore equally naked body parts, then somehow we were all on the same team. No hierarchies were established. In general, there was very little naked breast censorship. Free nipples appeared on magazine covers at newsstands, whether tabloids or art and fashion magazines. Breasts were so naturally part of the national conversation and aesthetic that Ilona Staller (also known as Cicciolina) and Moana Pozzi, two porn stars, cofounded a political party called the Love Party. I have a clear memory of my neighbor hanging their party’s banner out his window, featuring a topless Cicciolina winking.

A lot has changed since those days, but also since that initial 2017 piece. There’s been a feminist revolution, a transformation of women’s fashion and gender politics, the absurd overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction in New York, the intensely disturbing overturning of Roe v Wade and the current political battle over reproductive rights radiating from America and far beyond. One way or another, the female body is very much the site of political battles as much as it is of style and fashion tastes. And maybe for this reason naked breasts seem to populate runways and street style a lot more than they do beaches—it’s likely that being naked at a dinner party leaves more of a permanent mark than being naked on a glamorous shore. Naked “dressing” seems to be much more popular than naked “being.” It’s no coincidence that this year Saint Laurent, Chloé, Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Gucci, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Valentino all paid homage to sheer dressing in their collections, with lacy dresses, see-through tops, sheer silk hosiery fabric, and close-fitting silk dresses. The majority of Anthony Vaccarello’s fall 2024 collection was mostly transparent. And even off the runway, guests at the Saint Laurent show matched the mood. Olivia Wilde appeared in a stunning see-through dark bodysuit, Georgia May Jagger wore a sheer black halter top, Ebony Riley wore a breathtaking V-neck, and Elsa Hosk went for translucent polka dots.

In some strange way, it feels as if the trends of the ’90s have swapped seats with those of today. When, in 1993, a 19-year-old Kate Moss wore her (now iconic) transparent, bronze-hued Liza Bruce lamé slip dress to Elite Model Agency’s Look of the Year Awards in London, I remember seeing her picture everywhere and feeling in awe of her daring and grace. I loved her simple sexy style, with her otherworldly smile, the hair tied back in a bun. That very slip has remained in the collective unconscious for decades, populating thousands of internet pages, but in remembering that night Moss admitted that the nude look was totally unintentional: “I had no idea why everyone was so excited—in the darkness of Corinne [Day’s] Soho flat, the dress was not see-through!” That’s to say that nude dressing was usually mostly casual and not intellectualized in the context of a larger movement.

But today nudity feels loaded in different ways. In April, actor and author Julia Fox appeared in Los Angeles in a flesh-colored bra that featured hairy hyper-realist prints of breasts and nipples, and matching panties with a print of a sewn-up vagina and the words “closed” on it, as a form of feminist performance art. Breasts , an exhibition curated by Carolina Pasti, recently opened as part of the 60th Venice Biennale at Palazzo Franchetti and showcases works that span from painting and sculpture to photography and film, reflecting on themes of motherhood, empowerment, sexuality, body image, and illness. The show features work by Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Louise Bourgeois, and an incredible painting by Bernardino Del Signoraccio of Madonna dell’Umiltà, circa 1460-1540. “It was fundamental for me to include a Madonna Lactans from a historical perspective. In this intimate representation, the Virgin reveals one breast while nurturing the child, the organic gesture emphasizing the profound bond between mother and child,” Pasti said when we spoke.

Through her portrayal of breasts, she delves into the delicate balance of strength and vulnerability within the female form. I spoke to Pasti about my recent musings on naked breasts, which she shared in a deep way. I asked her whether she too noticed a disparity between nudity on beaches as opposed to the one on streets and runways, and she agreed. Her main concern today is around censorship. To Pasti, social media is still far too rigid around breast exposure and she plans to discuss this issue through a podcast that she will be launching in September, together with other topics such as motherhood, breastfeeding, sexuality, and breast cancer awareness.

With summer at the door, it was my turn to see just how much of the new reread on transparency would apply to beach life. In the last few years, I noticed those beaches Michele and I reminisced about have grown more conservative and, despite being the daughter of unrepentant nudists and having a long track record of militant topless bathing, I myself have felt a bit more shy lately. Perhaps a woman in her 40s with two children is simply less prone to taking her top off, but my memories of youth are populated by visions of bare-chested mothers surveilling the coasts and shouting after their kids in the water. So when did we stop? And why? When did Michele’s era of “un-beauty” end?

In order to get back in touch with my own naked breasts I decided to revisit the nudist beaches of my youth to see what had changed. On a warm day in May, I researched some local topless beaches around Rome and asked a friend to come with me. Two moms, plus our four children, two girls and two boys of the same ages. “Let’s make an experiment of this and see what happens,” I proposed.

The kids all yawned, but my friend was up for it. These days to go topless, especially on urban beaches, you must visit properties that have an unspoken nudist tradition. One of these in Rome is the natural reserve beach at Capocotta, south of Ostia, but I felt a bit unsure revisiting those sands. In my memory, the Roman nudist beaches often equated to encounters with promiscuous strangers behind the dunes. I didn’t want to expose the kids, so, being that I am now a wise adult, I went ahead and picked a compromise. I found a nude-friendly beach on the banks of the Farfa River, in the rolling Sabina hills.

We piled into my friend’s car and drove out. The kids were all whining about the experiment. “We don’t want to see naked mums!” they complained. “Can’t you just lie and say you went to a nudist beach?”

We parked the car and walked across the medieval fairy-tale woods until we reached the path that ran along the river. All around us were huge trees and gigantic leaves. It had rained a lot recently and the vegetation had grown incredibly. We walked past the remains of a Roman road. The colors all around were bright green, the sky almost fluorescent blue. The kids got sidetracked by the presence of frogs. According to the indications, the beach was about a mile up the river. Halfway down the path, we bumped into a couple of young guys in fanny packs. I scanned them for signs of quintessential nudist attitude, but realized I actually had no idea what that was. I asked if we were headed in the right direction to go to “the beach”. They nodded and gave us a sly smile, which I immediately interpreted as a judgment about us as mothers, and more generally about our age, but I was ready to vindicate bare breasts against ageism.

We reached a small pebbled beach, secluded and bordered by a huge trunk that separated it from the path. A group of girls was there, sharing headphones and listening to music. To my dismay they were all wearing the tops and bottoms of their bikinis. One of them was in a full-piece bathing suit and shorts. “See, they are all wearing bathing suits. Please don’t be the weird mums who don’t.”

At this point, it was a matter of principle. My friend and I decided to take our bathing suits off completely, if only for a moment, and jumped into the river. The boys stayed on the beach with full clothes and shoes on, horrified. The girls went in behind us with their bathing suits. “Are you happy now? my son asked. “Did you prove your point?”

I didn’t really know what my point actually was. I think a part of me wanted to feel entitled to those long-gone decades of naturalism. Whether this was an instinct, or as Pasti said, “an act that was simply tied to the individual freedom of each woman”, it was hard to tell. At this point in history, the two things didn’t seem to cancel each other out—in fact, the opposite. Taking off a bathing suit, at least for my generation who never had to fight for it, had unexpectedly turned into a radical move and maybe I wanted to be part of the new discourse. Also, the chances of me going out in a fully sheer top were slim these days, but on the beach it was different. I would always fight for an authentic topless experience.

After our picnic on the river, we left determined to make our way—and without children—to the beaches of Capocotta. In truth, no part of me actually felt very subversive doing something I had been doing my whole life, but it still felt good. Once a free breast, always a free breast.
