The demand for engineers is apparent in almost every engineering sector, however, electrical engineering remains one of the most popular. There are jobs available in a range of different sectors and industries and here’s why you should think about a career in electrical engineering.

What is electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is all about the design, construction and building of electrical devices. This type of engineering all began with ‘ the implementation of  Michael Faraday's Law of Induction , which essentially states that the voltage in a circuit is proportional to the rate of change in the magnetic field through the circuit.’ (Livescience.com;2021)

Engineers working within the electrical sector can have a wide variety of different roles. They’re needed to design, plan, and supervise multiple projects, which means there is demand for a lot of different skills. You may be used to employers saying that ‘there is never a boring day’ but when it comes to electrical engineering, they might just be right. You may find yourself with different tasks every day and going off to different locations to help with a new idea or project.

The job roles can be adaptable and more often than not, employers want someone who can be flexible and have a ‘go with it’ attitude.

Why is this the sector for you?

Your skills can be transferable – Employers want diversity. They want people to come in from different backgrounds and bring a fresh mind set with them. It’s important to have skills, but innovation craves the differences from people. They need new ideas and new ways of working in order to achieve goals. So, whether you are new to the engineering sector or you are looking to find a new role within electrical, there is probably a place for you.

It’s a creative sector – If you’re a creative person and you have a lots of ideas, electrical can give you the opportunity to voice these ideas and work in a great team to help you achieve these.

There’s demand - There’s a huge benefit to the large demand for electrical engineers - the need is worldwide. You’ll are likely to have plenty of opportunities to travel and work remotely. A lot of electrical engineering jobs allow you to work in various places a few times a year too. If this element is of interest to you, it’s worth asking employers about travel in the interview stages.

It’ll never get boring - New electrical devices (industry and consumer based) are invented and created every day. More often than not, as soon as something goes to market, businesses are looking for the next big thing or a way to make the existing model better. Ideas are changed and new ideas for improvement and further innovation are always needed, and you’ll have a good time by being part of the next pioneering piece of technology.

What skills are needed for a career in electrical engineering?

  • The ability to analyse problems and find solutions quickly using both theory and practical solution methods
  • Organisational, communication and teamwork skills
  • To be able to design and explain your designs clearly to people who won’t always understand your thought process

Not every job is perfect, and a career in electrical engineering is no exception. The hours may be long sometimes to ensure deadlines are met. There are also a lot of complex tasks that are undertaken, so a well-focused mind is essential. However, when you enjoy your work, the hours put in can be very rewarding. Just like any job, there can be overtime and tough moments, but if engineering is the career for you, you’ll look past these things.

There’s a decent salary involved depending on the industry and your level of experience. On average an experienced (and chartered) electrical engineer can earn around £45,000 a year. If you want to be more specialised, you may need further qualifications. Some colleges offer distance learning courses as the sector is primarily IT focused. The IET is also a great resource for information, courses, and contacts for the electrical engineering sector.

There’s a good element of job security in the world of electrical engineering. The industry might have a demand for fresh thinking, but there’s an equal demand for experience and skills that you’ll only be able to acquire on the job. What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineering deals with the study and application of physics and mathematics combined with elements of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism to both large and small scale systems to process information and transmit energy. It covers a wide range of sub-fields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems , RF engineering, and signal processing.

Three reasons to study Electrical Engineering:

  • Always in demand: the technology sector grew rapidly in the last decades and so did the demand for those who create, understand and develop electrical control systems, which means good job opportunities for you after graduation.
  • High salaries: as an electrical engineer, you will begin your career higher on the salary ladder than e.g. teachers or social science graduates.
  • Future technologies: electrical engineering is at the forefront of developing new technologies for a number of industries including those of transport, healthcare, construction and robotics.

How to study Electrical Engineering?

Courses in electrical engineering will teach students how the industry works, equipping them with the engineering skills necessary to design, assess and improve electrical systems.

After learning the foundations, students can specialise in their chosen area of interest (examples include power generation and supply, communications and media, and robotic systems). The courses comprise laboratory work, tutorials, lectures, project work in groups and as individuals.

Electrical and electronic engineering personal statement example 1.

I have always had a creative ability and a fascination with how things work. The challenge of solving practical problems inherent in the field of engineering appeals directly to these traits.

I am particularly interested in electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) because it is such a rapidly evolving discipline. The potential to integrate new technologies into real life applications and the opportunity to develop practical skills in this sphere is exciting.

I spent a week within the Electronics Department at the British Geological Survey and was shown the diversity of the work they undertake. Their job is to use electronics to investigate the properties of rocks using invasive and non-invasive techniques. What most enthused me was the freedom the engineers have to use their creativity to solve problems. I observed them designing their own experiments and using their PCB layout and design skills to build circuits to achieve this.

In addition to my school work I have been studying an Open University science short course entitled 'Inside Nuclear Energy'. I chose this course because nuclear energy is a fundamentally important consideration in our future energy supply.

The module debated nuclear energy from an ethical and practical perspective as well as studying the technology and science involved such as calculating nuclear decay and how a nuclear power station works. Studying this module has broadened my scientific reading and helped my time management and independent study skills.

During my academic career I have been house representative and a member of my school council. I was a member of my school team for the national Bar Mock Trials and reached the final in Belfast. I was elected as a member of the UK Youth Parliament for South Lincolnshire where I was very fortunate to attend Stormont and debate in the House of Commons.

I was the Managing Director of a Young Enterprise group. This role involved managing a team of 10 of my peers and maintaining good relations throughout while ensuring that quality and time management was maintained.

As a team we designed our product and I negotiated with a local manufacturer who produced it using recycled plastic bottle tops. I gained valuable team work and management skills and we won both regional and national awards including one for 'Innovation'.

In my free time I play netball where good teamwork is essential. I play clarinet, guitar and have reached grade five in piano. I enjoy watching talks on TED.com and I keep up to date with Wired magazine which covers current and future trends in technology.

I believe it is important that an engineer has a wider understanding of the social, political and economic issues to better appreciate the context in which engineering impacts on the community it serves.

In economics I have learnt to consider the effect of negative externalities which include the environmental impact of individual companies. I am acutely aware of the need for science to explore ways of harmonising technology with nature. All engineering henceforth will need to consider its environmental impact.

EEE impacts on almost every aspect of our lives today and will only grow in importance. I want to be part of our technological future and make a positive contribution to future developments.

This major enables students to design and build some of the most sophisticated systems created by humans. After undertaking core classes in circuits, systems, and computer architecture, along with a grounding in computation, students can explore all areas of electrical engineering, from analog circuit design to computer engineering to quantum engineering to communications. Many classes offer rich design and hands-on building experiences, while others delve deep into underlying theory.

This report is meant for my fellow consultants working with Career Consultants Incorporated, who will be joining me as me be acting as career advisors in my career field of specialization. The report has been requested by my boss Geraldine Schliemacher who will present it to them.

Purpose of the report

The main aim of the report is to enable the career consultants who will be acting as career advisors to be able to understand my career field and in the process, they will be able to know the occupational outlook of the different graduates all over the world in my career field.

Electrical and electronics engineering is a career that deals with the study and applications of electricity and how it is influenced by electromagnetism (Ryder & Fink, 2006). The electrical part deals with the study of heavy electrical machinery that uses heavy current such as power transmission while electronics deal with the study of light currents such as in small electric components or devices like computers and integrated circuits.

Components using Light Current.

Electrical and electronics engineering has different options where one can further specialize in; telecommunications systems, control systems, power systems, and computer systems (Tunbridge & Lord, 2001).

Power Systems.

For one to be able to follow this career path as an electrical engineer, they need to have a minimum of if an electrical engineering degree from any university that is recognized by the commission for higher education (Weber & Nebeker, 2004). Other qualifications such as Cisco certified network associate, master’s degree, project management, and Cisco certified network profession are added advantages that may give a cutting edge among their peers.

This career majorly entails designing a new system that is power efficient as well as faster. Such a system may be; a power transmission line, network systems especially for telecommunication system option, maintaining and servicing industrial control systems, and finally coming up with new programs and software that address current emerging issues especially for the computer system option. The career can also involve the supervision of graduate trainees, more so if the concerned engineer has been working in the organization for a long time, they may be needed to mentor new and young employees (Dorf, 2005).

To be able to make a good engineer, a graduate must have a positive attitude towards their job. They should be able to easily adapt to their environment by being flexible.

Reliability is also another important trait a person should possess as it ensures that can meet deadlines and thus meeting the customer demands. This makes them dependable.

A graduate should also exhibit the willingness to learn and to be taught. This ensures they easily grasp concepts that they may not be familiar with or may not have been taught during their time in university (Blockley, 2012).

There are so many opportunities that can be filled with graduates in this field both in the private sector and in the public sector. These graduates can work as network engineers in telecommunications firms, power engineering in the electric power transmission station, the chief and assistant engineers in the government as well as work as consultants in their private firms (Undeland & Robbins, 2003).

Associate Staff Electrical Engineer, Power Supply Systems

Brookhaven national laboratory (bnl) was recently chosen as the building site for the electron-ion collider (eic), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  the eic will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. the machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized rhic ion-ion collider.  it will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the electron-ion collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges., we are seeking an electrical engineer to join our power supply systems group.  in this role, you will work with team members and learn to develop, design, procure, test, and install magnet power supplies and devices for the eic.  these power supply systems control the path of the beams for the eic accelerator systems.  you will also assist in developing specifications and plans, making scope adjustments and documenting. we seek candidates who enjoy working in a collaborative, team environment., join the bnl eic team and be part of building the next discovery machine for science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with the Power Supply Systems staff, accelerator physicists, and EIC system managers and engineers to develop, define, and document detailed requirements and specifications for magnet power supply systems.

Collaborate with other engineers and technicians to deliver eic power supply systems and components. participate in various project phases including, initial concept, engineering analysis, detailed design, integration, fabrication procurement assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning. , work as part of a team in all magnet power supply system projects. , ensure that magnet power supply systems and components have well defined specifications for support systems: electrical power, water cooling, hvac, compressed air, and controls, and that these are communicated with the responsible support groups., maintain an environment conducive to openness, collaboration, and respect for all..

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline

Experience on creative engineering projects, familiarity with electronic test equipment including function generators, oscilloscopes, and multimeters, ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate/interact with other engineering and scientific staff for assignment, and guidance. support contractors, vendors, project management and procurement professionals, experience organizing and presenting technical status reports, utilizing ms office (word, excel, powerpoint).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline

General knowledge of rectifiers, linear, and switch mode power supplies, knowledge of feedback control, good understanding of analog and digital electronic technologies, good electrical system testing and trouble-shooting skills, experience with technical software: pspice, psim, microcap or other circuit analysis tools, matlab, mathcad.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements

Will be required to climb ladders for equipment installation and inspection

Will be required to become a qualified radiation worker, may be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission     critical projects.

School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) alum Christopher Scolese is the 2024 recipient of the National Space Trophy, recognizing his outstanding contributions to space discovery, exploration and advancement. 

The National Space Trophy is given by the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA). Scolese was selected as this year’s recipient in recognition of his demonstrated technical brilliance, exemplary administrative skills, and outstanding leadership over his 32-year NASA career, culminating in his current position as the director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). 

“Chris’ journey from his tenure at NASA to his current position as the Director of the National Reconnaissance Office exemplifies the remarkable careers that our SEAS alums go on to lead,” said Kemper Lewis, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “I am thrilled that he is receiving this prestigious and well-deserved   recognition for his extensive career marked by exceptional leadership and a commitment to the advancement of the field of space exploration.”

Scolese graduated from the University at Buffalo in 1978 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer engineering and started his career at NASA in 1987. He worked at the Goddard Flight Center until 2001 when he moved to NASA’s Washington D.C. office. He held a number of different positions and managed the oversight for NASA’s Space Science Flight Program and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 2005 he became the chief engineer at NASA headquarters.

In 2012 he returned to the Goddard Space Flight Center where he led a team in developing systems for Human Space Flight, Astrophysics, Planetary and Earth Science missions and the James Webb Telescope, a project that captured images of the first galaxies, formed more than 13 billion years ago. In 2019 Scolese was sworn in as the 19 th Director of the NRO and was the first to be presidentially appointed and confirmed by the Senate.

Over the course of his career Scolese has established himself as one of the world’s leading authorities in the area of space systems engineering. During his time at NASA he participated in widely known missions such as the Mars Rover Missions, the Mars Odyssey and Cassini Saturn Orbit Insertion Missions.

In 2009 he received NASA’s Distinguished Service Medal, the organizations highest honor. He has also received two NASA Outstanding Leadership Medals and the Goddard Outstanding Leadership award. In 2015 he received a SUNY honorary degree at UB. He currently serves on the advisory board for SEAS’s Department of Electrical Engineering and returned to campus in November as a distinguished speaker.

He is a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Scolese will be presented with the award at the 36 th annual RNASA Space Awards gala on April 26.
