Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats, Essay Sample
My thoughts about why dogs outshine cats in every way .
Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a heated debate about whether dogs or cats are better? Dogs and cats are the two most popular pets in the world, but when it comes to choosing between them, there is a significant divide among animal lovers. Both animals have their own unique characteristics and charm, but in this essay, I will argue that dogs are better than cats. While cats may be independent and low maintenance, dogs have qualities that make them superior pets, such as their loyalty, savvy, and active lifestyle.
This essay, which I’ve written using a custom essay service , will explore why dogs are better than cats, by examining various factors. Through a thorough analysis of several key areas, including loyalty, savvy, and intelligence, this essay will demonstrate why dogs are the better choice for those looking to add a furry companion to their lives.
Let’s dive into this age-old debate to find out why dogs make the better pets!Â
Are Dogs Better than Cats: Advantages Of Dogs
Dogâs loyalty .
One of the best qualities of dogs is their loyalty. From puppyhood, they will form an attachment to their owner that will last for life â a trait that cats simply donât possess. Itâs no wonder why we refer to our canine friends as âmanâs best friend!â Even if you move away from your dog, they will remember and recognize you when you return. Unlike cats, which can be aloof and independent, dogs thrive on human companionship and will do anything to please their owners. Studies have shown that dogs have the ability to form deep emotional bonds with their owners, which leads to increased feelings of love and security.
IntelligenceÂ
Dogs are also renowned for their intelligence. They can learn complex commands, play games with their owners, and even recognize certain words or phrases people use. Furthermore, studies have shown that dogs have an impressive ability to understand social cues from humans and respond accordingly â something that cats cannot do as quickly. To my mind, dogs are truly remarkable animals in terms of their cognitive abilities!Â
Adding to their intelligence is how dogs can pick up on things fast â whether itâs understanding what we want from them or reading our facial expressions â they truly know us inside out! Theyâre also great problem solvers as they use trial and error tactics when trying something new; this leads us back to being able to train them efficiently, so they know how we expect them to behave around people/other animals, etc.Â
On top of all that, pups seem more attentive than cats as well since they actively look at us when weâre talking instead of ignoring what we say, like felines sometimes do!  Â
Active LifestyleÂ
Finally, one of the main reasons why dogs make great pets is because they are naturally active creatures who thrive on exercise and interaction with people. If you take your dog out for regular walks or runs, it will likely be more content than a cat who has been left alone all day in a house without any stimulation or fresh air. This means that when it comes to choosing between a dog or cat as your pet, a canine companion may be more suitable if you lead an active lifestyle yourself. By the way, this is exactly what I paid attention to when choosing a pet.  Â
Conclusion  Â
In a nutshell, while cats may have their own unique charm, dogs are better pets overall. Their unwavering loyalty, savvy, and active lifestyle make them the perfect addition to any family. I think by choosing to own a dog, you are not only gaining a loyal companion, but you are also improving your physical and emotional well-being.

Domestic Animals: Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats Essay
Different people have their own preferences and different reasons on whether to have pets such as dogs or cats. First, there are not many games that can be played with cats. Many cats enjoy playing with string toys and small cat ball toys in the same way that people do. One can decide to play alone as well as with others (Menchetti et al., 2020). Dogs love to play and often become interactive games that one play with them. If the dog is on good terms with other dogs, one can even arrange a “play date” for another puppy. However, always ensure that both dogs are healthy and close. This paper therefore discusses some of the reasons why dogs are superior to cats.
Most cats are generally sensitive to their environment and do not like changes. Many dogs are more tolerant of change, especially if their owners pretend, they pay little or no attention. In general, introducing a new person, pet, or item to oneâs place or relocating to a new home requires more time for the cat to get used to the new environment (Stregowski, 2021). Most owners do not automatically believe that everything is fine. Most of the dogs are modeled after their owners. If the dog is calm and gathering when new babies come through the door, so should the cat. Of course, there are some that refuse to accept strangers.
Dogs are more active than cats, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. Dogs can be taught actions, manners, tricks, and commands. This can be done for safety and protection, simple pleasure, as well as obedience. According to Albuquerque & Soares (2019), dogs love training as they have a mission, and they love to be part of a pack. Cats can be educated, but when they are bored, they can knock their treats out of their hands and run away. In addition, dogs protect peopleâs home from thieves and strangers, while cats do not. They are shy and tend to run away when strangers visit. Even the smallest dogs with their loud barking are enough to lure some burglars into intruding other people’s homes (Large, 2018). Many dogs can even wake someone up when there is a fire outbreak, which cats cannot.
Dogs are lifelong companions; they will want to be with someone until their last day. Some of the bonds with dogs are beautiful; they are friends you can have for a very long time. A person who listens to the other, hugs them and remains loyal to them throughout their life (Albuquerque & Soares, 2019). Moreover, a dog is a very affectionate pet, unlike a cat. A dog will lie or sit next to its owner while doing other things. It is thrilled to see them because it gets excited when the owner comes home, even if the owner was away for 20 minutes (Menchetti et al., 2020). This kind of affection is not as strong as a cats usually show, as they would not care if someone is away the whole day.
Lastly, it is essential to take oneâs dog for a walk to do its daily work and exercise. But one may not know that caring for their dog helps to take care of oneself. According to one study, older dog owners travel nearly a mile each day (Amanda-h, 2018). This can be more than being forced to walk unmotivated by their beloved pet. Of course, if they take their dog a little under the block, they will be more active if they have a dog. Throwing a ball or Frisbee, or playing in the yard with a dog, necessitates more exercise than simply hitting a string ball.

How it works
Dogs and cats have several similarities, but even more distinctions. Both animals are easily loved by mankind and will display love and affection in return for good treatment. Some people enjoy the presence of a cat, and others are simply dog lovers. Based on the history, characteristics, and similarities of the two creatures, dogs are considered to be manâs best friend- but most likely itâs the feline who is.
Thousands of years ago, a man trapped wolves and used a selective breeding process to make canines with certain qualities.
Some of the qualities include hunting abilities, obedience, and trainability. Every dog in our modern world has the DNA of wolves, although if you look at a Yorkshire Terrier or a Teacup Chihuahua one would have their doubts. Throughout time, breeding became more selective, and more breeds were born. Humans began breeding dogs for their function. Some canines were great for hunting, while others did the best job of herding or guarding. Canines can show more human characteristics such as love, sorrow, and loyalty. Dogs are also more social than cats which is why some consider them the best companions.
Felines, on the other hand, decided on their own that they would integrate with humans. The Egyptians considered cats to be Gods, due to them protecting their homes from death and disease by killing rodents. The Egyptians thought so highly of their beloved felines that they mummified them for the journey to the next world- and even included mummified mice to accompany their pets. In the middle ages, Pope Gregory IX associated cats with Satan and witches. The accusation led to the massacre of millions of cats across Europe. After the massacre, there were no cats to kill rodents and this caused an outbreak of black rats which brought on the Black Death.
Cats are more independent than dogs and are considered loners. Felines only seek companionship from other cats when mating. They enjoy spending time away from humans and do not get lonely, whereas a dog would. All cats today still harbor the same traits as their ancestors because they were not bred into exclusivity, they were perfect just how they were. Cats are nocturnal and do the best hunting at night solitary. They have a long tail that aids in balance, and light-reflecting eyes which gives them an advantage over their prey. Cats are quick and have retracting claws for self-defense, they can jump and climb to get away from any threats. Dogs are more earthbound and not able to jump as high or climb trees such as cats. Canines hunt more efficiently when they are accompanied by their pack. While both species are carnivores, dogs can survive on plant materials if needed but cats are strict meat-eaters. All cats are considered equal and do not have ranks to determine their social status. Dogs have a particular social status, their rank is determined by how high they hold their tail. When one dog greets another and that dog holds its tail up, it means they are of higher social class. Cats only hold their tail up as a sign of content, they do not feel the need to dominate.
Aside from the numerous differences, there is also a good deal of similarities. Both canine and feline are part of the Mammalia Kingdom. Both dogs and cats birth multiple offspring at one time. The mother carries 3-12 babies in one litter. A characteristic of the female in the Mammalia Kingdom is that they have mammary glads, which allows the mothers to nurse their young. Both canines and felines are covered in fur and can carry fleas and ticks if not treated by the owner. The lifespan of these two creatures ranges an average of twelve years, and up to twenty-five for cats and eighteen for dogs. Both cats and dogs show territorial instincts that come naturally. The canine and feline alike have the ability to survive in the wild if needed, their natural hunting instinct would employ before being left to starve to death.
Some people may think more profoundly of cats due to the felinesâ intelligence, while others fancy dogs for their companionship. A cat does not need your love, food, or acceptance. Felines are the ultimate hunters and voluntarily gave up their life in the wild to save man from rodent infestations and the plague, and cats know it.

Dogs Are Better Than Cats (Persuasive Essay Sample)
A time comes in life when we start to think about adopting a pet either for ourselves or our children. At that point, we all start to think about whether we should adopt a dog or a cat as these two are the most popular pet species. Almost all of us love both of them but the problem comes when we have to choose only one. It’s time to heat this timeless debate on why one is better than the other. In this essay, I will persuade you to believe that dogs are better than cats through the arguments presented below.
Dogs are Better Than Cats Essay 700 Word Long Persuasive Essay
Dogs and cats are two animals commonly kept as pets at home. Dogs are considered a manâs best friend and truly so because of their special connection with humans. On the other hand, cats are also the cutest furballs that are all cozy and cuddly. Most homeowners prefer keeping dogs to cats however some also prefer cats. Dogs are stronger, smarter, and sharper as compared to cats and can fit in many roles. I am a dog person myself and do prefer dogs over cats. Through this persuasive essay, I will make sure you also become a fan of keeping a dog as a pet.
Dogs are playful and engage their owners in different activities to help them stay active. Owning a dog is like having a loyal friend to talk to, laugh with, and take short walks in the evening. It’s because dogs are more loyal and loving than cats can ever be. Furthermore, Dogs can also fulfill guard roles by protecting us within our homes. Dogs are much better house guards than burglar alarms and security cameras. Dogs are also smarter than cats, they can understand gestures through voice tone and body language. Most importantly, dogs bring real joy and share a bond of unconditional love with the owner and the whole family.
Unlike cats, dogs need to be active, they are always ready to go outside and enjoy a walk with their owners. Due to this the dog owners also have to go with them which also serves as a healthy daily exercise . Taking your dog for a walk on a daily basis means you will also achieve all your daily exercise targets. Unlike cats who don’t go out for walks and develop behavioral problems like scratching and oversleeping, dogs don’t have these problems. Taking your dog out deepens your connection with the pet and helps build a stronger bond of love.
Here Are More Benefits of Keeping a Dog as a Pet
- Unlike cats, dogs can be easily house trained for litter. Almost all cats use the litter box and no matter how much you try to avoid bad odor you just can’t escape it.
- Dogs don’t shed as much hair as cats. People who keep cats as pets are more likely to suffer from breathing problems.
- You can’t play fetch, chase, or tug-of-war with your cats. Most cats only play on their own and are not nearly as fun to be around as a dog.
- Unlike cats that dislike change, dogs make better pets because they adapt to change very easily.
- Dogs are far more intelligent than cats and can be trained fairly easily.
- Police dogs, rescue dogs, and service dogs can also prove to be better house pets than cats.
- According to a study, on average a cat sleeps more but a dog sleeps less, making dogs better pets.
- Dogs require less maintenance than cats and guide dogs can detect bombs, illegal drugs, illegal substances to save lives.
Other than all these benefits your untrained pet dog can be trained to become your service dog. Dogs as pets love to take care of all family members by promoting an active lifestyle. Dogs can also be trained to reduce anxiety, depression, encourage exercise, ease loneliness, and improve heart health. They can even detect seizures and heart attacks even 12 hours before they happen to save the life of their owner.
In conclusion, comparing cats and dogs is like comparing two different fruits. Both of these animal species are unique in their way and have their benefits. Dog lovers will love dogs and cat lovers will love cats no matter how much you convince them. This centuries-old battle doesn’t need to continue. Both cats and dogs can live together so why not get both?
Short Custom Essay About Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats
Dogs and cats as pets have become a part of our humane society and culture. Choosing between both of these lovely and irresistibly cute furballs is a very hard task. People generally assume dogs are better pets as they have acquired the title of becoming the man’s best friend. However, as a cat person, some people are crazy cat lovers. In this short persuasive essay about why pet dogs are better than pet cats, I would convince you why dogs are better.
Both cats and dogs are different animal species and obviously, both have different personalities and unique qualities. A dog is a man’s best friend but a cat is an irresistibly cute furball. Despite all this, there are so many reasons why people prefer dogs. Dogs promote a healthier lifestyle, they force their owners to engage in daily exercise through constant walks and playful activities. Dogs are much more interactive than cats. Cats can play on their own but dogs always want their owners to play with them. A dog’s love for his owner can never be compared to a cat’s love, as their loyalty is out of this world.
Unlike cats, pet dogs can understand gestures by noticing the owner’s body language and tone of voice. Service dogs can even detect seizures and heart attacks 12 hours before they happen. Unlike cats, dogs can be house trailed for litter. On the other hand, you can’t escape bad odor coming from a cat litter box no matter where you place it. Cat’s shed more hair than dogs and due to this cat owners can suffer from asthma and other breathing problems.
In conclusion, dogs are the most popular pets on the planet but cats still have their own place. Most people may rank dogs as the best pet but they can never turn a blind eye towards the beautiful little furballs. This is certainly an age-long discussion on which of these two is a better pet. However, one thing’s for sure that these two can stay together and if you like both you can keep both at the same time.

Pro-Cat: Dogs or cats? Itâs quite the debate, but really itâs up to you: do you want something that drools all over you, barks in the middle of the night, has to be walked twice a day, and humps strangers, or would you like a quiet, peaceful, orderly, independent creature who only asks a bite to eat, a litterbox, and a small corner with the sun on it to lie in? Getting a dog would be a mistake, but getting a cat never is.
As you move into the body of your essay, set out each point one-by-one. It may help to make an outline laying out your evidence. Hereâs your chance to explain why dogs are better, or why cats are better. You should have at least three full paragraphs to make your case, and remember, you can have anecdotes, appeals to emotion, nostalgia, or statistical evidence to back you up. If you want to talk about the friendly neighbourhood cat when you were growing up, or your family dog who saved you from drowning at the age of nine, hereâs your chance.
Your conclusion is a way of summing up your points and ending with calling your reader to take some kind of action. This action could even just include thinking about dogs or cats differently. Hereâs another couple of samples for you.
Conclusion examples
Pro-Dog: Dogs save lives, aid fitness, play catch, and are all-around great fun to own. They make loyal and lovable companions. Everyone should have a dog at least once, so if youâve never had one, nowâs your opportunity.
Pro-Cat: Cats arenât the Internetâs favourite animal for nothing. They are cute, snuggly, affectionate, and adorable. They will make your heart sing when they curl up in your lap or nuzzle against you. Thereâs no love quite like the love of a cat. But many cats linger in shelters, and some of them even get killed because they have no home to go to. Every cat should be loved, so if youâre in need of a furry companion, go to your nearest rescue shelter and let yourself be picked out by one of them for a lifetime of love and kitty cuddles.

10 Reasons Why Cats Make Better Pets Than Dogs
From Their Ease of Care to Their Quiet Nature

Many people think that cats are better than dogs. Cats are easy to care for, quiet, and relatively affordable. They even groom themselves . There are certainly benefits to owning a cat that you won't get from owning a dog. Here are 10 reasons that cats are better than dogs.
Cats Don't Take up Much Space
Ryland Dean / Unsplash
If you've ever tried to share a bed with a golden retriever âor even a tiny dog âyou know they take up a ton of space. Between their size, their love for stretching out into everyone's personal space, the room they need to play and exercise, and their stuff (such as a dog bed or dog toys), dogs need a solid amount of room to live a happy, healthy life.
Cats, however, don't need a lot of space to thrive. As long as you can fit their essentials, such as litter boxes (you need one box per cat plus one extra) and food and water dishes, you can pretty much guarantee your kitty will be happy.
Owning a Cat Is More Affordable
Jena Ardell / Getty Images
Over the course of their lifetimes, cats are generally more affordable than dogs. While buying a specific breed of cat can be expensive, generally, adoption fees are lower for kittens and cats than they are for puppies or dogsâparticularly during kitten seasons or times when the shelter has a major influx of kittens. Some shelters may even waive their fees or offer a two-for-one deal on pairs of kittens.
Once you own the pet, there are plenty of expenses you will have to incur, from supplies to caretakers. Because dogs have a tendency to destroy their toys , they have to be made from much tougher (and much more expensive) materialsâor replaced often. Cat toys are relatively cheap to buy and even cheaper (and easy) to DIY.
Plenty of exercise is absolutely vital to a dog's health, but getting two or three walks a day can be tough when you have a full-time job. Considering the average dog walker charges $15 to $20 for a 20-minute walk, costs can add up quickly. Cats, however, are perfectly content lounging, napping, hanging out on a cat tree , and playing with their toys at home alone while you work the day away. It's even better if you have two kitties since they'll keep each other entertained.
Cats Are Perfectly Content Indoors
It's virtually impossible for dogs to have an indoors-only lifestyle; they need a lot of exercise, plenty of walks, and time spent outdoors to live happy and healthy lives. But if you don't have a yard or access to parks, or have limited mobility, this may present a major challenge.
Not only are cats much safer indoors , but they're perfectly happy perched next to a window or curled up in a sunny spot on the couch. Simply crack a window for some fresh air (but make sure it's not open wide enough for kitty to escape), and your cat will be totally content watching birds and bugs all day long.
Cats Are Quieter
Even the biggest dog lovers have to admit: Whether your dog is barking at a passerby, another animal, or simply because its favorite toy is stuck under the couch, incessant barking can get pretty annoying.
While cats certainly do make some noiseâ especially at night , when many cats are most activeâmeows and purrs tend to be pretty quiet. Meowing and purring are cute, but even better, you'll begin to recognize what your cat's meows actually mean . You'll learn how to differentiate a meow that means "I'm hungry" from a meow that means "Cuddle me!"
Kittens Require Less Work Than Puppies
anurakpong / Getty Images
Both puppies and kittens require an incredible amount of time, energy, and attention. Between getting it comfortable in its new home, introducing it to its new diet, and starting some preliminary training, you may be a little bit sleep-deprived during the first few weeks with your new pup or kitten.
Puppies, however, need ongoing training (especially for potty training), but once kittens are weaned from their mothers and have learned the basics of using the litter box, they can be left at home unsupervised during the day.
Do you want to be extra safe? Put your kitty in a room where it can't get into mischief while you're gone. It'll keep the kitty wrangled in one safe space and, due to its smaller size, it won't be able to cause much (if any) damage from being contained.
Cats Keep Pests at Bay
MRS / Getty Images
Cats are natural-born hunters, so it's in their DNA to stalk, hunt, and pounce on their preyâeven if it's on a television screen. While you should never, ever let your cat eat a bug or mouse it catches, a pest-free home is just one of the many benefits of owning kitties. What's more, your cat's scent alone can keep rodents away from your house; if rodents detect a hunter in the home, they're far less likely to enter.
Cleaning the Litter Box Is Easier Than Constant Walks
The Spruce / Ana Cadena
While it may be a little weird that your cat pees and poops in strategically placed boxes all over your house, cleaning out a litter box is far  easier than having to take walks late at night, during scorching summer days, or through freezing snow, all while scooping up dog poop with a plastic bag over your hand.
Cats are naturally very clean creatures, and one of their instincts is to bury their pee and poop. This hides their territory from predators who, like cats, use their sense of smell to find their prey. Although house cats aren't necessarily being hunted by predators, humans can reap the benefits of neat, clean, and completely covered waste.
Cats Clean Themselves
Dogs love stuff that smells badâfrom garbage, to dead animals, to poopâand they really love to roll around in it. As a result, dogs require routine bathing and grooming, which can get very expensive if you take your dog to the groomer.
Cats are essentially self-cleaning machines. You may want to groom it with a brush every once in a while and definitely  clip its nails as needed, but otherwise, cats do a very good job of keeping themselves clean.
Cats Understand Personal Space
Tom Oehne / Getty Images
Sometimes after a long, stressful day at work, you may not be in the mood to have a dog at your heels, following you around the house, nudging you to play fetch. While cats may get a bad rap for being cold or distant, they really just understand (and appreciate) the concept of personal space. Cats don't require your constant attention or energy, which will give you plenty of opportunities to sit and relax after a long work week.
Cats Provide Health Benefits
Paul Hanaoka / Unsplash
It has been said that owning a pet can reduce stress and make you live longer, but there are certain health benefits that cats provide to their owners. Purring, for example, may have therapeutic healing capabilities on human muscle and bones. The frequency of the vibrations has been shown to have positive effects on joint mobility after an injury.

29 reasons why cats are better pets than dogs
Posted: February 12, 2024 | Last updated: February 12, 2024
Weâre calling it â these are the reasons why cats are better pets than dogs (and this is coming from a pooch-lover)
Itâs a debate as old as time: which makes for the better pet, a cat or a dog? After doing our research, weâve come to the conclusion that our feline friends make for easier, cleaner and more hassle-free pets.
For example, did you know that cats can live for longer than their four-legged furry counterparts? And that they usually require less training than dogs? Plus, if youâre strapped for time but would love to reap all the rewards pets can bring, cats donât require a lengthy daily walk. Generally speaking, cats tend to walk themselves and keep active playing with their toys or from jumping on high perches. While they do need mental stimulation, they can often get their fix through puzzle toys, scratching posts and by flexing their hunting instincts by playing with a cat wand.
So, as you can see there are lots of perks to having a cat as a pet. And weâre only just getting started.
Cats can live for longer
If well looked after, most domestic cats can live anywhere between 12-14 years. Although it has been reported that some may be with you for 20 years. While our other four-legged friends, tend to have a 10-13 year lifespan â although this will of course vary from one dog breed to another. This means a cat will tend to live longer than a dog. So you have time to make more happy memories with your feline friend and create a super strong bond that will last for years and years.
Cats sleep a lot
On average, a domestic cat will sleep anywhere between 13 and 16 hours during the day. Which, as you can see, is pretty much half, if not more, of a 24-hour day. So this means you can go about your business, knowing your cat will be happy in its own company in the Land of Nod. And when your kitty is ready to interact and play with you, theyâll let you know. This differs from dogs who only need 12-14 hours of kip a day to help them rest and recharge.
Cats are more hygienic
Did you know, cats have barbed tongues? This coarser tongue allows them to rid themselves of dirt, mess and any other debris thatâs made their way into their coat. And itâs believed this is something they do for 30 to 50 per cent of their day. Of course, this is opposed to dogs who can drool, cover themselves in mud (and any other dirt) and although they do groom themselves every now and again, they only really intend to âcleanâ themselves when they have an itch, a scratch or an allergic reaction.
Cats are better at finding their way home
Itâs true. Cats can work out their way home many minutes, hours, days and even years after they have made their way outside. And itâs all because of their incredible sense of smell. Itâs thought cats leave âolfactoryâ traces along the way, meaning they can follow the trail they have traveled and find their way back to their home. Along with having their nose to help them find the way, they have scent glands on their tail, forehead, cheeks, lips and paw pads. Which is pretty impressive, right?
Cats use their litter boxes
So, we know cats are hygienic creatures, spending up to half of their day grooming themselves. But did you know that many kittens and cats will use their litter box without really needing much outside help? Most times, you only need to show your kitten where their litter box is and teach them how they can access it and then they will take themselves to the toilet. Thatâs because they have a natural instinct to bury their waste so that they donât alert predators to their whereabouts.
Cat poop is smaller
Measuring up to 10 inches in size â and no more â catâs waste is a whole lot smaller than their other furry four-legged counterparts. And it makes sense. Most felines are much, much smaller than dogs, meaning their waste is too. Plus, with a cat, you wonât have to spend time picking up their waste as once taught. That's because once taught, most cats will use their litter tray and bury their excrement, which is a habit that tends to come naturally to them.
Cats are easier to potty train
Itâs a good idea to show your kitten or cat where their litter tray is as soon as you can. Along with helping them feel safe and comfortable in their home, this will help them keep their space clean (and therefore yours). Cats have a natural instinct to bury their waste in a bid to stop any potential predators from knowing theyâre present. So once shown where their litter tray is, theyâll pretty much find it every time they need to go. Which will differ from potty training your pooch.
Cats require less training
With a puppy, along with teaching them the basic obedience tricks just 8 weeks after they are born, such as the sit, stand, stay and come commands â you will also need to house train them and potty train them. This is something you will need to do for 5-10 minutes every day until they have grasped the basics. Then comes the tricks, such as handing you their paw or rolling over. Whereas cats will need sporadic training sessions. And most cats donât tend to spend their day learning new tricks. Theyâve got grooming, sleeping and perching to do!
Cats donât bark
Generally speaking, dogs bark to express how they are feeling. This can be the case when they are bored, scared, excited or frustrated. Or they could bark to tell you they are feeling threatened or that they just love their new toy. However this isnât the case for cats. Of course most cats purr, itâs nowhere near as loud as a dogâs bark can be. So if you value your quiet time, be sure to do your research about which cats are more vocal than others.
Catâs are independent
Itâs a well-known fact that cats are independent creatures. Of course, they value spending quality time with their human pack. But from the moment they are born, they only ever need to feel comfortable in their environment, know where their food is, be taught where their litter tray is and show lots of love, of course. But apart from that, a cat is pretty happy to go about their day on their own, exploring the big wide world from up high or playing with their scratching posts. Which is great if youâre time-poor or not in the house 24/7.
They donât need walking daily
No matter the time, day or weather forecast, most dogs love nothing more than hearing that four letter word, alerting them that itâs time to head out into the great outdoors and go for a walk. This is highly important to a dog's health. Not only does this help them stimulate their mind and body, it allows them the opportunity to sniff, run around and bond with you. Whereas cats tend to walk by themselves. Whether this is through playing with their favorite cat toys or discovering new perches way up high.
Catâs donât take up much space
Itâs thought that a medium-sized dog weighs around 50 lbs, which is the equivalent of a five-year-old child. Whereas cats measure in at around 10 lbs which is very minuscule in comparison. Cats tend to spend their days finding new nooks and crannies, under furniture or in high-up places. Meaning they wonât take up much space in your home. In fact, you might not notice their presence at all on some days. So if youâve got a small home or large family, a moggie could be the perfect match.
Owning a cat is more affordable
Itâs believed owning a cat is a lot more affordable in comparison to a dog. One report found that the upfront costs of welcoming a cat into your home was between $700 to $3,000, in comparison to dogs who could set you back anywhere between $1000 and $5000 (if not more depending on what breed you choose). Of course both cats and dogs will need their vaccinations, but youâll also need to keep a grooming pot ready for your dog too to help keep them feeling, looking (and smelling) their best.
Cats understand the concept of personal space
If youâve ever been in the presence of a dog, youâll know how heartwarming it is when your four-legged friend wants to be close to you all the time. Sitting on the couch? Your dog will be right by your side. Want to go to the toilet? Youâll find your cute companion waiting outside for you. And while this is all well and good, it can be overwhelming when you have a pooch trailing behind you or sitting on your feet at any chance it gets. Whereas cats differ. Of course many kitties will happily curl up on your lap, but they wonât want to do it 24/7. Cats understand the need for personal space.
Owning a cat might mean you're more intelligent
Have you ever wondered if cat owners are more intelligent or whether those who own dogs scoop the top spot? Well, according to a study published in the Association for Psychological Science which looked for personality traits that coincided with choices in pet ownership, there was one clear winner. Overall, researchers came to the conclusion that cat lovers scored much higher on intelligence than those who preferred dogs. We donât make the rules!
A cat is less smelly than a dog
Cats spend 30 to 50 percent of their time grooming themselves, meaning two things: there is less time to spend getting dirty and if they do pick up some debris in their coat, they'll spend the next half of their day trying to get rid of it from their coats. This makes cats cleaner than dogs and therefore not as smelly as their four-legged friends. While most dogs tend to spend their day rolling around in the outside world, sleeping and playing. Dogs are known for having an aroma, while cats tend to have a distinct lack of body aroma.
Cats require less toys
Cats donât need a lot of toys to keep them amused so this means you wonât have to fork out a small fortune to keep your feline mentally and physically stimulated. Itâs believed around 4 to 5 options should keep them amused throughout the week. Then, if possible, rotate these toys with 4 of 5 more toys the following week. You can repeat this process with the previous weekâs toys to keep things interesting. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
Cats can be left alone
Cats are independent souls who value their quiet time as much as you value yours. Need to work from the office? No bother. Intend to pop out for a few hours? Your cat wonât mind. As long as your kitty has everything they need to live a full and fruitful life â from their food, water and enough mental and physical stimulation â they can go about their day just fine. Generally speaking some cats can be left overnight, but most experts would advise that this shouldnât be longer than 8-12 hours. If youâre unsure on how long you should leave your cat by itself, consult with your veterinarian.
Cats are great for apartment dwellers
No outside space? No problem. Most cats donât tend to need to go outdoors to live a happy life. In fact, itâs something some experts encourage as itâs much safer for cats indoors rather than outside in the big wide world. If you do intend to keep your cat indoors, it is however important to make their indoor environment a stimulating one, with everything they need to tick off their mental and physical needs and enough stimulation to keep them healthy and happy.
Cats are quiet
While walking around the house, you might barely notice they are there. As opposed to a dog who will run, pound and march their way over to you or anywhere. Cats will of course purr and meow, but this wonât interrupt your quiet time too much. In fact there are some feline breeds, such as the Ragdoll, Persian and Scottish Fold who are known for their quiet and softly-spoken features. So if you are looking for a quiet cat to fit in perfectly with your serene space,, be sure to do your research.
You wonât get any noise complaints
If youâre in a quiet residential area or living in an apartment, you wonât need to worry about upsetting your neighbors. Most cats are quiet creatures who spend their day watching the world go by, curling up in your lap or playing with their toys. Being small in stature and having a natural instinct to hunt, they are careful not to make much noise no matter if theyâre running from one room to the other or pouncing on furniture. Whereas dogs will make their presence known both with their barks and their movement.
Cats are less destructive
If you have ever owned a pooch, watched a film where thereâs a four-legged friend in it, or know a friend or family who has a dog, youâll know how destructive they can be if left to their own devices for too long. The same can be said if said dog is poorly house trained or if they are bored. Whether itâs slippers, furniture or food, if given the chance some dogs wonât leave a stone unturned. Whereas cats can be destructive and can do damage to furniture and other household objects, but being usually smaller in size, the damage is far lesser.
Cats are really good mothers
We canât speak for all cats and the various cat breeds, but generally speaking, cats take very good care of their offspring. So if your cat is pregnant with kittens, you can rest assured you wonât have to take on too much more responsibility around your home. Though parenting styles will differ, mother cats will fight to protect their young. Even after spaying, a mother catâs maternal instinct is strong no matter whether itâs over their own or others.
Catâs donât tend to bite
Itâs important to flag that not every dog or breed of dog bites. But in the cat world, our feline friends just tend to nip as a last resort. This might be the case if they are feeling overstimulated and can happen if we have missed any other vital forms of cat communication (like purring, licking, meow-ing or scratching) that our four-legged furry friends have tried to get across to us. Either way, when a cat nips itâs rarely done out of aggression.
Cats are cute
You only have to look at a picture of a cat to see how cute, cuddly and endearing these furry creatures can be with their big eyes, soft coat and kind nature â and there are studies to back this up. No matter what breed you pick, whether itâs a Scottish Fold, Birman, Maine Coon, a Munchkin cat thatâs characterized by its short legs or any other four-legged friend, youâre bound to be bowled over by their cuteness from the moment you set eyes on them.
Cats love life in the laid-back lane
Most cats are known for being laidback creatures. Spending just over half the day sleeping, theyâll spend the rest of their hours curling up on your lap, playing with their toys or sitting on a high-up perch watching the world go by. Afterall, these feline friends are hunters at heart. Therefore their natural instinct is to lie in wait, calmly and quietly. So if calmness is a quality youâre looking for in a pet, a cat is most definitely up to the task.
Cats have smaller carbon footprints
We should all be thinking about how we can better look after the planet and our pets are included. So out of a cat and dog, who has a smaller carbon footprint? Well, from the title of this point, youâll know that owning a cat is more environmentally friendly than a dog. But how so? Itâs believed the average dog produces 770 kg of CO2 per year, while an even larger dog can produce up to 2,500 kg. Whereas a cat generates an average of 310kg.
Cats are good for your health
Itâs long been proven that cats can be good for your health and for more reasons than one. For example, did you know that cats can help you lower your stress and anxiety levels? While there is evidence to suggest that a catâs purr can help to calm your nervous system and lower your blood pressure, which is pretty great, right? So if this doesnât convince you that cats lead the charge and make for the better pet over a dog, we donât know what will.
Cats splash less around their water bowl
Hereâs a question for you: how many times a day do you spend clearing up after your pooch after itâs drunk some water from its water bowl? If youâre struggling to answer that question, itâs most likely because you have lost count. Most dogs are known for being messy creatures. Whereas a catâs drinking ability is far more elegant and subtle, only dipping their tongue in the water before drawing it back up. Meaning? More water for them and less water to clean up for you.
