Talking about the future

Level: intermediate

When we know about the future , we normally use the present tense .

1. We use the present simple for something scheduled :

We have a lesson next Monday. The train arrives at 6.30 in the morning. The holidays start next week. It 's my birthday tomorrow.

2. We can use the present continuous for plans or arrangements :

I 'm playing football tomorrow. They are coming to see us tomorrow. We 're having a party at Christmas.

3. We use will :

  • when we express beliefs about the future:
It will be a nice day tomorrow. I think Brazil will win the World Cup. I'm sure you will enjoy the film.
  • to mean want to or be willing to :
I hope you will come to my party. George says he will help us.
  • to make offers and promises :
I 'll see you tomorrow. We 'll send you an email.
  • to talk about offers and promises :
Tim will be at the meeting. Mary will help with the cooking.

4. We use be going to :

  • to talk about plans or intentions :
I 'm going to drive to work today. They are going to move to Manchester.
  • to make predictions based on evidence we can see:
Be careful! You are going to fall .  (= I can see that you might fall.) Look at those black clouds. I think it's going to rain .  (= I can see that it will rain.)

5. We use will be with an -ing form for something happening before and after a specific time in the future :

I 'll be working at eight o'clock . Can you come later? They 'll be waiting for you when you arrive .

6. We can use will be with an -ing form instead of the present continuous or be going to when we are talking about plans, arrangements and intentions :

They 'll be coming to see us next week. I 'll be driving to work tomorrow.

7. We often use verbs like would like, plan, want, mean, hope, expect to talk about the future:

What are you going to do next year? I 'd like to go to university. We plan to go to France for our holidays. George wants to buy a new car.

8. We use modals may , might  and could when we are not sure about the future:

I might stay at home tonight or I might go to the cinema. We could see Mary at the meeting. She sometimes goes.

9. We can use should if we think there's a good chance of something happening:

We should be home in time for tea. The game should be over by eight o'clock.

The future in time clauses and if- clauses

In time clauses with words like when, after, until we often use present tense forms to talk about the future:

I'll come home when I finish work. You must wait here until your father comes . They are coming after they have had dinner.

In clauses with if we often use present tense forms to talk about the future:

We won't be able to go out if it is raining . If Barcelona lose tomorrow, they will be champions.  

I would like to ask about how to distinguish the present simple and the future simple when we want to talk about a plan or an activity happening in the future. Could you please tell me your idea about this exercise?

There's not enough context to really know what idea about the future this sentence communicates. Since it's not clear, A, B and C could all easily be correct and the verb forms would have the meanings explained above.

I also want you to clarify when we use the present simple and the future simple or be going to when we want to talk about the future. What are the differences? Can you tell in detail what type of plans or activities we will use the appropriate tense?

This information is on the page in the explanation above these comments:

  • present simple - fixed future events, timetables and schedules
  • will (or other modal verbs such as might, could or may) - predictions, guesses, promises and threats
  • be going to - intentions, logical predictions based on evidence
  • present continuous - events you have already arranged

Future forms are very much dependent on the context and on how the speaker sees the situation, as you can see. Very often there is a more than one form possible.

Hello Kirk, I think in the first sentence the speaker is asking about plan who made earlier to ask Jake. Whereas in the second sentence the speaker is insisting someonelse to take decision to ask Jake right at the moment of speaking. If I am wrong, please correct t me.

Yes, you've got the right idea. If we say 'Who will tell Jake?', we are clearly asking for a volunteer -- as you put it, for someone to declare this at the moment of speaking.

'Who's going to tell Jake?' suggests that there may already be a plan of some sort, though perhaps it hasn't been finalized.

In 1), only the second sentence is correct. We don't use two modal verbs ('will must') together as they are used in the first sentence.

In 2), we typically make the verb 'think' negative (as in the second sentence) rather than the other verb (as in the first sentence). But the first sentence is not incorrect; it's just unusual. Note, however, the spelling of 'holidays'.

Both of the sentences in 3) can be correct. It depends on the situation and/or speaker's intended meaning.

Both of them are correct! In comparison, the second one emphasises the fact that the meeting has already been organised and confirmed relatively more.

When you think of "will" always remember the song "we will rock you" and "i will survive". Also remember that "a will" (noun) is testament (document) that says what will be done in the future and is 100% (can't be changed).

Next week I'll be visiting your city. Next week I'm going to be visiting your city.

Both sentences use the continuous aspect to talk about the city visit, so the main difference is the difference between 'will' and 'be going to'.

Both forms can be used to make a prediction. When they are used to make a prediction, 'be going to' more strongly suggests there is some evidence for this future event than 'will' does. Although the two sentences you ask about are probably not predictions, they could be depending on the context.

More likely these are statements about plans. 'be going to' shows that a plan is already in place; the plan was made before the moment of speaking. It speaks of your intention to visit the city next week.

The most common meaning of 'will' in speaking about the future is for a plan made at the moment of speaking. This doesn't really work in this context, but people do sometimes say something like 'Next week I'll be visiting your city'. In this case, it could be that someone else has arranged your travel plans or your schedule and has decided the details of this trip. In this case, 'will' is used to report a fact about the future. This suggests less intentional involvement on the part of the speaker than 'be going to', which we use to speak about intentions.

The correct question is 'Why is 'would have done' used?'

The answer to this question is as follows. We use 'would have done' when something was a possibility in the past but did not happen. For example:

I would have gone to the party, but I didn't get an invitation.

Although it seems odd to link a form like this which rooted in an unreal past with a future time reference ('tomorrow'), sometimes people do so. This is generally when the decision to do something in the future has been taken in the past. For example:

I would have gone to the party tomorrow, but I didn't get an invitation and now I have other plans.

Here, the party is tomorrow but the time to decide/arrange to go was in the past. It's an unusual use, but it occurs in contexts like this. Whether this is what Letterman had in mind or whether he was just playing linguistic games for comedic effect I can't tell you, however.

Hi Team, I'm learning the difference between the future tense "I will go tomorrow" and the future with present progressive "I am going tomorrow". What is the difference between them in these examples please? I know the grammatical difference but I was wondering when you would use one over the other. The context and the speaker's intentions are key, but in general, for example, 'I'm going tomorrow' implies that you've already had your trip planned. You haven't decided to go just now as you're speaking with someone.

If you say 'I'll go tomorrow', it could be that you are making a promise to go to the person you're speaking with, or it could be that you've decided you will go just now while speaking.

I'd say this is the most typical distinction in meaning between these two forms, but, as always, other meanings are possible in specific situations.

Could you please help me with my confusion concerning "will" and "going to". It is quite understandable that will refers to spontaneous ideas and going to is used for planned actions. I've been a bit confused since I read that Cambridge Dictionary says: "One of the main uses of will is to refer to things in the future that we think are certain".

1. So, if someone asks me "What are your plans for Monday and Tuesday" can I answer "I will work" (=I am sure I'll do) or does it have to be "I'm going to work" (because it refers to my plan"? In the same way, can I ask someone "Will you work tomorrow?" or should it be "Are you going to work tomorrow?"

2. Can I say "I will have a rest on Maldives" (I'm sure I will, I have already bought tickets and booked a hotel and I'm sure it will happen) or "I'm going to have a rest on Maldives" (I have already bought tickets and booked a hotel, so it's my plan).

'Will' describes a decision, as you say. The key to understanding the second use is not the degree of certainty of the action but rather the concept of 'we think'. In other words, 'will' describes our belief in a certain outcome. That is why it is used in prophecies and guesses. It's also why we tend not to use it about our own actions unless we are making a promise or a threat. After all, we do not need belief in our own choice - the choice depends only on us.

1. For the reasons above, 'going to' is used in both examples here.

2. Again, 'going to' is more appropriate here.

Hello Team, I have some confusion over the use of the term 'later' to talk about the future. For example, can I say "I will take the exam 6 months later" to refer to the future? Does it instead refer to the past? Wouldn't it be more correct to say "I will take the exam in 6 months/ 6 months from now" to talk about the future? Why? Thanks in advance!

'Later' is a comparative form which requires another time in the future as a reference point. For example:

The plan was to do it in September but we're going to do it a month later instead. The plan was to do it in two months but we're going to do it a month later instead.

> September or 'in two months' are the reference points for 'later' here.

Without this reference point you cannot use 'later':

We are going to do it in October / in three months / 

> There is no reference point so 'later' cannot be used.

Hello, Talking about the future, especially for plans/arrangements and plans/intentions. As written above: We can use the present continuous for plans or arrangements, and we use "be going to" to talk about plans or intentions. For me, it is difficult to settle if they are plans/arrangements or plans/intentions. In both cases, it comes naturally to me to use the form "be going to"; is it so grammatically incorrect? An arrangement normally involves some sort of official process (e.g. "I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow" implies that the person has made an appointment; "I'm going to New York" implies booking tickets, hotels, etc.), or coordination with other people ("I'm meeting my friends for dinner tonight.").

These same things can also be described as intentions ("I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow"; "I'm going to go to New York"), so there's nothing wrong with using "going to". However, an intention does not necessarily involve making an arrangement. Intentions also include things that the person simply desires to do ("I'm going to drive to work today"). 

There is a large overlap between these meanings of the present continuous and going to. However, the present continuous does have that "arrangement" meaning, which comes in useful sometimes!

As with most future forms, the choice depends on how the speaker sees the situation. Going to is by far the most common form used in this context because it is a predictable process based on evidence we possess. Will is not grammatically incorrect, but it would suggest some kind of guess or prediction (fortune telling?), so it does seem unlikely.

And then probably I will/ am going to watch Tv for a little while. A recource indicates both options fit the situation. But why? It seems either prediction on the basis of experience Or simply an instant decision. So why to use be going to?

I think both  will  and  am going to  are both fine for the first one.  Am going to  is OK because it shows something that has already been decided before the moment of speaking. Since eating dinner is a regular and everyday activity, it can be understood in that way. For the second one, I would prefer  will .

It could be any of these functions, depending on the context in which it is said or written!

The presenter could use "is going to" to show a strong sense of certainty. "Will" is also possible, to present the information as the speaker's belief. 

In this example, there is another factor to consider: the conventions of the type of text. Aside from the speaker's own intentions and understanding of the information, the speaker is also producing a kind of text that has its own characteristics for content, language and organisation, which have been established through many other texts produced previously. In my experience, weather presenters mostly use "will", and the speaker may also decide to follow this convention. This is true for not just weather forecasts but newspaper articles, academic articles and any other kind of text.

If you are interested in a particular type of text, it might be interesting for you to take some examples of it and see whether they use "will", "going to" or both, and in which circumstances.

There is often a choice of future forms which the speaker could use and that is the case here. You could see the situation as a future fact ('will be'), a prediction (also 'will be'), an intention or plan ('am going to be') or an arrangement ('am'). All of these are possible and reflect less an objective fact than how the speaker conceives the situation.

Can I say: "I can see you tomorrow if they didn't cancel the class". Is it correct?

I think anyone would understand this, but I'm afraid that combination of verb tenses isn't correct.

If I understand what you want to say here correctly, 'I can see you tomorrow if they don't cancel the class' is the correct form.

Due to the fact that predicting based on present evidence expresses a higher level of certainty, why is it stated in some resources that “will” states a higher level of certainty, especially in neutral information, as in: I will be 21 next week. What is the difference between: I will be 21 next week? And I am going to be 21 next week.

Actually, "will" can also indicate a high level of certainty. The differences between "will" and "going to" are not only in the level of certainty, but also the exact meaning of the future event. If you say "I will be 21 next week", you are stating it relatively simply and factually, as a future event. If you say "I am going to be 21 next week", you are presenting it as a kind of process that is already underway and is inevitable. That's the meaning underlying the "present evidence" explanation of "going to" - it is evidence of a process that is already happening. In many cases (such as this one), this small difference between "will" and "going to" is unlikely to be important in the conversation. Whichever one you choose expresses the point, which (I presume) is to tell the listener when your birthday is.

Similar to the previous question, both  will and  going to  are correct and plausible answers! Without more contextual information, we cannot know for sure which one the speaker intends.

Just like the past and present tenses, there is more than one future tense in English. These change depending on the function and what we want to say.

Today we’re going to look at four future tenses: the future simple, the future continuous, the future perfect and the future perfect continuous. We’ll show you how and when to use them. We’ll also share with you some fun videos and activities to help you understand them better.

The future tenses

Take a look at the four future tenses in English and how they’re used in a sentence:

1. Future Simple

Let’s start with the basics. The future simple is used to talk about a time later than now and can be used in lots of different ways.

  • It is made up of the verb will/won’t + base infinitive (infinitive without to) .
  • Because will is a modal verb it doesn’t change depending on the person doing the action.
  • We can use contractions e.g. I will = I’ll .
  • In the negative, we can also use will not for more emphasis.
  • Won’t is more common in speech.
  • In short answers we say: yes X will or no X won’t .

Here’s a look at the future simple in positive and negative statements and questions.

Uses and examples

  • Instant or spontaneous decisions – I’m hungry. I think I’ll make a sandwich.
  • Future predictions based on a belief – I’m sure you’ll pass the test .
  • Promises – I won’t tell anyone your secret .
  • Offers – I’ll carry your bags for you .
  • Requests – Will you tell Henry I called?
  • Threats – If you do that again, I’ll tell Mum .
  • Future facts – I’ll be back later tonight .

We can use shall instead of will for future time references with I and we . However, it is slightly more formal.

E.g. We shall never forget this beautiful day .

It is also common to use shall in questions to make offers, suggestions or ask for advice.

E.g. Shall I carry these bags for you?

Shall I open the window?

What shall I tell Mary about the broken vase?

Be going to vs will

It’s important to note that for predictions based on evidence and for future plans we use be going to not will .

E.g. Look at those grey clouds. It’s definitely going to rain!

– What are you doing after work?

– I’m going to the gym .

2. Future continuous

Now let’s move on to the future continuous. Generally, we use this tense to talk about things in progress at a particular time in the future. Take a look at the form:

The structure of the future continuous is as follows: will/won’t + be + ing form

  • An action in progress at a specific time in the future (at 5pm, this time tomorrow, in two weeks, in five years time etc.) . This time tomorrow, I’ll be flying to Barbados .
  • An action we see as new or temporary . I’ll be working for my Dad until I find a new job .
  • Predictions or guesses about future events . He’ll be coming to the party, I guess .
  • Predictions about the present . She’ll be getting married right now, I imagine .
  • Polite enquiries . Will you be joining us for dinner?

Stative verbs

It’s important to remember that some verbs cannot be used in the continuous tense. These are called stative verbs. Stative verbs describe states, feelings, thoughts and opinions. Instead of the future continuous, we use the future simple tense for these verbs. Here are some examples:

Here’s a fun activity to practise what you’ve learnt about the future continuous. All you have to do is talk about what you’ll be doing at these different points in time. Try saying them out loud or write down your answers on a piece of paper. We’ll post some possible answers at the end of this blog post.

3. Future perfect

Once you’ve mastered the future continuous, it’s time to learn the future perfect. The future perfect is used to talk about a completed action in the future. Here’s a look at the form:

  • The form of the future perfect is will/won’t + have + past participle .
  • Regular past participles end in -ed.
  • Irregular past participles don’t follow the common conjugation pattern.

  • An action that will be completed before a specific time in the future . Next September, we’ll have been married for 50 years .
  • Use by or by the time to mean some time before . I’ll have finished this report by the time you’re home .
  • Use in, in a day’s time, in two weeks’ time, in three months’ time etc. to mean at the end of this period . In three years’ time, I’ll have completed my degree .

4. Future perfect continuous

We use the future perfect continuous to show that something will continue up until a particular event in the future. We normally use it to emphasise how long something will have been happening for.

The form of the future perfect continuous is will/won’t + have + been + ing (present participle)

  • To show that something will continue up until a particular event in the future . In October, I’ll have been working here for ten years .
  • To show something finished just before another time action (cause and effect) . When I arrive, I’ll have been working all day, so I’ll be tired .
  • With time expressions (by + then / tomorrow / next year etc., by the time, when) . By the time we arrive, we’ll have been travelling for fifteen hours .

Activity four

Look at these five photos of people with different professions. Write down sentences using the future perfect continuous to describe what they will have been doing four hours into their work shift . E.g. They will have been cooking for four hours. We’ll write some examples at the end of the blog post .

  • In two hours I’ll be at home watching the TV on the sofa .
  • At 9pm I’ll be cooking dinner .

  • I’ll be having dinner with friends next Friday .
  • I’ll be having my operation in 2 weeks .
  • I’m not sure what I’ll be doing next month .

4 Ways to Talk about the Future in English | Advanced English Grammar

Hey! I have a question for you. What are you doing this weekend?

Think about your answer in English. Does your answer include the word WILL? For example, did you answer:

  • I will go shopping this weekend.
  • I will visit my family this weekend.
  • I will see a movie.

Is this how you learned to talk about the future in your English classes?

To use will + verb  to talk about the future. For example:

  • I  will visit  my grandmother today.
  • She  will go to the movie theater with her friends this evening.

Grammatically, what you learned is correct but there is one big problem…  We don’t really talk like that in English!

In real life, we use 4 different ways to talk about our future arrangements, plans, intentions, wishes, expectations, and predictions. And we usually don’t use WILL to talk about the future.

Imagine these different questions:

  • What are you doing tonight after work?
  • What are your plans for the weekend?
  • What vacation plans do you have for this summer?
  • What do you think you will do this year for the holidays?
  • What are the company’s predictions for sales next year?
  • Which strategies will help to grow our sales by 5% next year? In 3 years?

Each of these questions focuses on the future. These are very common questions in daily conversation and for professional situations.

But here is the good news:

With this lesson, you are going to learn exactly how to speak about the future in English naturally!! We won’t focus only on grammar rules. Instead, let’s think about real-life future situations in English and how you can talk about them using grammar you already know in English.

English Grammar Tenses for Talking about the Future

Scheduled events / timetables.

Think about these questions and how you might answer them:

  • How do you get to work? Do you take the bus or the metro? What time does your bus leave on Friday?
  • If you are talking to a client on the phone and you have to go to a meeting soon, what might you say?
  • Does your friend have a birthday party scheduled for this weekend? What time does it start?

These questions are focused on scheduled events that you cannot change .

For example, you cannot change the timetable for the trains or buses.

And if your friend has a birthday party scheduled for 25 people, you probably can’t change the date and time.

If you have a business meeting later in the day, most of the time it is something you cannot change.

Now think about how you might answer these questions:

  • What time does the train leave on Friday morning?
  • When does the next bus arrive?
  • What time does your friend’s party begin on Saturday?

Generally, we use the  present simple  to talk about future scheduled events (events that you cannot control or change) and timetables (public transportation schedules, movie times, class times, programs, etc.) for example:

  • The train  leaves  at 8:45 a.m. on Friday.
  • The next bus  arrives  in 12 minutes.
  • Susan’s party  starts  at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
  • My next meeting  is  right after lunch and then I  have  another at 3:30 p.m.
  • He  has  a dental appointment scheduled for this afternoon.
  • Classes  starts  next Monday.
  • We have to hurry! The movie  starts  in 5 minutes!
  • The grocery store  closes  in just a few minutes .

In each of these examples, we’re focused on scheduled events or timetables. This means we’re focused on the  date  or  time  for which something is scheduled in the future.

Plans / Arrangements

Now, look at your calendar. What is written on your calendar? Do you have an upcoming plans or arrangements? Think about these questions:

  • What are you doing this weekend?
  • Where are you going for your summer holidays?
  • Where are you meeting your client for lunch tomorrow?
  • Where are you celebrating the holidays this year? At your home or your mother’s home?

These are common questions focused on your  plans or arrangements . This means it is something you’ve thought about and you’ve made arrangements, for example, made reservations, bought tickets, registered, had a discussion with someone else.

We generally use the  present continuous  form to talk about our future plans and arrangements. This can include the form going to + verb that you may have learned.

Now remember, the present continuous is also used to talk about what you are doing now, so let’s look at two examples to help understand the difference:

A: What  are  you  doing ? (question focused on now)

B: I ’m working  on the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting. (answer is focused on now)

A: What  are  you  doing  tomorrow? (question focused on future)

B: I ’m meeting  Sue for lunch to discuss the contract. (answer is focused on future)

Let’s look at more examples for talking about future plans:

  • We ’re working  in the garden most of the weekend to get it ready to plant and then we ’re having  dinner with some friends Saturday night. What about you?
  • We ’re going  to Corsica for a couple of weeks in August. I just booked our tickets. I’m SO excited!!!
  • We ’re meeting  at Lucia tomorrow for lunch. Do you want to come?
  • My family’ s coming  to my house for Thanksgiving this year. I ’m cooking  most of the dishes but my sister ’s bringing  dessert and my mom ’s making  a salad.

Intentions / Predictions with Evidence

Previously we talked about plans. With plans, arrangements have been made or discussed and agreed upon. An intention is something want to do, something you’ve thought about but you haven’t made any arrangements. For example:

  • I ’m going to start  exercising after the New Year! I’ve been eating too much over the holidays. (No arrangements are made by you want to do this.)
  • What  are  you  going to order ? (at a restaurant)
  • He ’s going to travel  around Europe or Asia after he graduates from school next year.
  • What  are  we  going to do  about this customer complaint?
  • When  are  you  going to respond  to Susan about the conference? I think she’s waiting to hear from you.

Do you notice the pattern? For talking about intentions, we use the  going to + infinitive verb  form.

This is also the form generally used when you make a prediction based on evidence. For example:

  • Look at the clouds coming in! It ’s going to rain  shortly. (We predict the rain based on the evidence of heavy rain clouds in the sky.)
  • Did you know Susan’s pregnant? She ’s going to have  the baby in 3 months.
  • If we continue at this rate, we ’re going to have  our best sales quarter yet.

Pronunciation Note:

In American English pronunciation, we often connect the sounds between  going + to . This is called  connected speech . In spoken form, going to sounds like  gonna . However, this is not appropriate in written form.

Predictions without Evidence / Factual Statements / Immediate Decisions

Now look at these final questions and think about how to answer them:

  • What do you think life will be like in 20 years?
  • What will happen if you don’t pass your exam?
  • Do think it will rain while we’re on vacation? Should we pack a rain jacket?
  • Will you be able to come to my party this weekend?

Finally! Talking about the future with  will . When you make a prediction based on something you believe, think, or feel, then it is common to use will + verb. This suggests it is your prediction but there is no fact or evidence for it. For example:

  • Cars  will fly  and everyone  will live  in glass houses by 2040.
  • I don’t think it  will rain . That would be very unusual for August.
  • I ’ll come  to your party if I can get my project finished at work. We’re under a tight deadline.

We also use will to talk about factual future statements. For example:

  • I’m sorry you’re having a bad day. But tomorrow the sun  will rise  and it  will be  a new day.
  • We  will have  a full moon tonight.

And lastly, if you’ve made an immediate decision at the moment of speaking, then will is often used. For example:

A: The phone’s ringing!

B: I ’ll get  it.

A: Oh no! I’ve spilled milk all over the floor and I’m already running late. I don’t have time for this.

Good question. We certainly can say, “The sun rises every day.” And while it’s correct, it changes the meaning that is expressed with, “The sun will rise and it will be a new day.” In the first example with the Present Simple, the focus is on the fact. And it focuses on every single day – not only tomorrow. In the second example, we’re trying to encourage a friend. And we’re not focused every day, we’re focused only on tomorrow. Actually, in both instances, I use “starts.” If there is a problem with the text, I will need to review it.

The grammar in number 1 tells me this is an intention but not a plan. You are thinking about this but you haven’t made arrangements.

In number 2, the grammar tells me that you’ve made arrangements to visit NY. For example, perhaps you’ve bought tickets or reserved a hotel. Is that right?

Have you already accepted the job? In A5, this is a great example answer and you’ve correctly used will to make a prediction. When we talk about living on the moon, we use “on the moon” instead of “in the moon.” And finally, in A7, I see you’ve used an example of the timetable and the present simple. This free ESL lesson plan on the future has been designed for adults and young adults at an intermediate (B1/B2) to advanced (C1/C2) level and should last around 45 to 60 minutes for one student.

If tomorrow never comes, does that mean we will never see the future? For something that we can never experience, we sure do spend a lot of our time preparing for it. In reality, are we really preparing for a future present? But if the future is predetermined, then what’s the point planning for it at all? I appear to have confused myself. Anyway, in this ESL lesson plan on the future, students will have the opportunity to discuss and express their predictions, hopes and concerns about the future.

PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES

Reading activity Before the English class, send the following article to the students and ask them to read it while making a list of any new vocabulary or phrases they find (explain any the students don’t understand in the class):

BBC | Twenty top predictions for life 100 years from now

In 2012, the BBC asked readers to give some predictions about life in 2112 and presented the 20 most interesting in this article, including the ability to communicate by thought, the ability to control the weather and a single world currency. What do they think about the issues raised in the article? Do they agree with what was said? Can they think of any ways they might disagree with the content of the article?

Video activity To save time in class for the conversation activities, the English teacher can ask the students to watch the video below and answer the listening questions in Section 3 of the lesson plan at home. The questions for the video are styled in a way similar to an exam like the IELTS.

The video for this class is a called “The Last Human – A Glimpse Into The Far Future” by Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell which looks at how big the human population may grow to in the future should we colonise the solar system and other parts of the galaxy.

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

The focus in the class is on conversation in order to help improve students’ fluency and confidence when speaking in English as well as boosting their vocabulary.

This lesson opens with a short discussion about the article the students read before the class. Next, the students can give their opinion on the quote at the beginning of the lesson plan – what they think the quote means and if they agree with it. This is followed by an initial discussion on the topic including the future of the students’ countries, technology that will exist in the future, and how people predict the future.

After this, students will learn some vocabulary connected with the future such as the foreseeable future , on the horizon and immortal . This vocabulary has been chosen to boost the students’ knowledge of less common vocabulary that could be useful for preparing for English exams like IELTS or TOEFL. The vocabulary is accompanied by a cloze activity and a speaking activity to test the students’ comprehension of these words.

If the students didn’t watch the video before the class, they can watch it after the vocabulary section and answer the listening questions. Before checking the answers, ask the students to give a brief summary of the video and what they thought about the content.

Finally, there is a more in-depth conversation about political ideologies. In this speaking activity, students will talk about issues such as the future of the environment, whether humans will be replaced by artificial intelligence, and how society will be different in the future.

After the class, students will write about their opinion of the future. This could be a short paragraph or a longer piece of writing depending on what level the student is at. The writing activity is designed to allow students to practise and improve their grammar with the feedback from their teacher. For students who intend to take an international English exam such as IELTS or TOEFL, there is an alternative essay question to practise their essay-writing skills.

Hi Guys, just noticed the multiple choice vocab answers are in red in both teacher’s and student’s PDFs. If they have the answers already, then doing the exercises doesn’t much sense, does it! Unless there’s a way to blank them….. Here’s an example of what I mean: 1. Blade Runner is set in a dystopian society in the near future ( answer in red ) where killer androids are on the loose. 2. Humans could become immortal (answer in red ) either through advancements in genetic engineering or by uploading their consciousness into a computer. Thanks for your support.

In our rapidly changing world what is the future of the English language?

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world, but what will English look like in the future? Here Mina Patel, one of the authors of the new British Council publication ‘The Future of English: Global Perspectives’, looks at how English, its teaching, assessment and use in business will be affected in a rapidly changing world.

People ask: what’s so important about English? The answer is simple, English connects people and changes lives. English changed my life. I arrived in England at the age of four as a refugee from Uganda. I couldn’t speak a word of English. Today I am one of the authors of the British Council’s newest publication, The Future of English: Global Perspectives. I was lucky. I was inspired at school, had wonderful teachers, and they instilled in me a passion for learning and teaching. I have been in English language education for many years and English has connected me to thousands of people around the world. 

The Future of English: Global Perspectives is part of a long-term research programme, which identifies key trends that will define the role of English as a global language in the coming decade. It also examines the issues and opportunities for countries around the world in achieving their goals for the use of English. 

The publication describes the programme and presents the findings from discussions with 92 policy makers and influencers from 49 countries and territories during 14 roundtables, about what they see as the future of English. From these conversations, eight themes emerged, themes that we believe will have an impact on the future of English in the coming years. So, what are the global perspectives about the future of English and what does the data tell us?

Will English remain the world’s most sought-after language?

For the foreseeable future English will remain the dominant global lingua franca (a language used by people with different native languages to communicate with each other), but the role it plays in the lives of individuals or in policies will begin to change. 

Numbers of learners will remain stable or rise in the next ten years. The main drivers for this are education, employment, technology and global mobility. Employers, parents and learners themselves are driving the need for English language education. They see it as a necessity for success in life, learning and employment. 

What role will English play in our multilingual world?

Multilingualism is the norm in most contexts around the world. Exploration, colonialisation, migration, and globalisation have all contributed to today’s multilingual world. 

English is often one of the languages used in multilingual situations where everyday communication is managed by individuals using their full range of languages organically and fluidly – a practice known as ‘translanguaging’.

One implication for English is that it increasingly ‘belongs’ (in the sense that any language can belong to anybody) to whoever uses it, in whatever form, to interact successfully in any given context. 

What is the future of English as a medium of education?

English as a medium of education (EME), also called English as a medium of instruction is when students are taught subjects in English, regardless of their first language. It is hugely popular in some contexts and is driven by governments and parents that see it as a good way to achieve fluency in English, so improving the chances of students getting a good job in the future.  

Universities which teach courses in English - with lectures, course materials and tutorials all given in English - are now very common. Primary and secondary schools where English is the main language of teaching and learning are also becoming more popular.  However, EME is a topic of much discussion and debate.

How will teachers remain relevant in future English language learning systems?

Our data tells us that teachers are very much at the heart of the teaching and learning process and the education system. Regardless of the technological shifts during the Pandemic, teachers are very important. However, in some places in the world, there are concerns about capacity with two main questions being asked. Are there enough English teachers and are there enough skilled English teachers?

Linked to this is teacher motivation and well-being. If English is considered a valuable and important skill for a nation’s educational, professional and economic success, then it follows that English language teachers should be looked after, supported, developed and rewarded to reflect the significance of their contribution to society. 

Public and private English language provision - who has the answers?

This is an interesting question, and although private language education provision can be better, our participants were concerned about the lack of monitoring and evaluation of private language provision.  

That said, public-sector provision of English language teaching is inadequate in many countries, often featuring inappropriate or outdated curricula.

It is likely that the answers to better quality provision in both sectors lie in greater cross-sector communication and collaboration.

Can English language assessment meet stakeholders’ changing needs?

People require different types of proficiency for different tasks in different contexts. This has implications for teaching, learning and assessment (TLA), particularly as we expect that aligning these components will continue to be of interest in the future.

English is no longer seen in isolation. Instead, it is seen as part of a range of knowledge, skills and expertise, captured by the concept of 21st-century skills and required for a dynamic globalised world. This presents two challenges for current assessment practices:

• Assessment needs to be more creative and innovative to develop and measure individuals more holistically.

• Language Assessment Literacy (LAL) needs to be considered more seriously and concepts of LAL need to adapt to be relevant in this changing assessment landscape.

Can technology narrow the equity gap in English language education?

While there are significant advantages to using technology to aid learning, both in and outside the classroom, these advantages have not always been built upon. This is because uptake and success depend on several factors:

• Access to hardware, such as TV, radio, computers, smartphones and the Internet.

• Teacher skills and motivation to support learning.

• Stakeholder support (within the education system and at home).

• Inclusion in modern curricula of recognition of informal learning (typically online).

The reality is that in many cases there are significant disparities in access across communities. This ‘digital divide’ can have social, educational and economic repercussions for those affected.

It is important to note that in many developing or rural places, technology doesn’t just mean mobile devices, it also means televisions and radios.

To what extent is employment driving the future of English?

The world of work has changed. Globalisation, together with advances in technology, has changed the way many companies operate and the skills required by employees. Previously technical skills in specific areas were highly sought after, now employers are looking for ‘all-round’ employees who can combine technical expertise with additional skills, including teamworking, problem-solving, negotiation, intercultural awareness and digital literacy. 

Multilingual and multicultural workforces are not uncommon, whether people are working remotely or in the same location. English is often the lingua franca and sometimes the official language of business as chosen by organisations. The very concept of international, dispersed teams changes and expands the parameters of English for work. 

English is becoming a requirement for all sectors of industry. At all levels in organisations and all over the world, English at work is no longer only for professional jobs or senior management roles – it has increasingly become necessary for lower-skilled jobs in the tourism and retail sectors. As cited in a previous British Council study, ‘even if English is one of the working languages in a major multinational company, the English proficiency requirement differs from role to role’ 

All these factors have led to the notion of proficiency, as we know it, being re-defined.

As the data shows, the future of English is interesting, dynamic and contextual but there are still many questions. The future of English programme is an invitation for colleagues and partners to collaborate to try and answer some of these questions.  We’re living in exciting times, change is the norm, but for the foreseeable future, English will continue to connect people and change lives.

Baby Steps: 10 Proven Tips to Write Better Essays in English

If writing an essay sounds a little bit scary, just think of it as a chance to improve your writing skills .

Nobody expects your first essay to be perfect. Just make sure you learn something new every time you write an essay, and you will  grow your abilities.

This is an interesting approach to writing your essay. First, choose a topic and write a thesis . A thesis is the main argument of your essay. For instance, if your topic is reading, your thesis might be “Reading makes you smarter.”

Once you have a thesis, think about your main topic and find words that relate to it in different ways. Then, branch out (broaden, diversify) your list to words that aren’t as closely related to your main topic.

For the example above, your primary list might include words like “books,” “reading” and “intelligent.” Your other “branched out” list might include “Harry Potter,” “reading by a fire” or “test scores.”

This process will help expand your vocabulary over time. Using these words when you write will also make your essay more vibrant (energetic, colorful).

When you are first assigned the topic, go ahead and really explore the possible options for your thesis. Ask questions. Get curious. The more questions you ask before you start writing, the more information you will have to use in the essay.

A strong essay is one that covers a lot of content in a succinct (short, to-the-point) way. This process of acting like a reporter will give you valuable quotes, resources and vocabulary to begin the writing process.

For instance, if you’re writing about a new diet plan , you might ask questions like, “Who is the best candidate for this diet plan?,” “How can someone get started?” and “What is the hardest part of this plan?”

A topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph, and it summarizes the rest of the paragraph. You can create them first to help you stay on track when writing your essay.

For the thesis “Reading makes you smarter,” one paragraph’s topic sentence might be, “Newspapers make you more aware of current events.” Another paragraph’s topic sentence could be, “Reading plays and classic literature will make you more cultured.”

If you’re writing about the three main issues facing writers today, you could write three full sentences that each address one main issue. Set these aside. Then, when you start writing the essay, refer to your topic sentences to create a solid structure that begins at point A and ends at point C.

If you have to write a longer or more complex essay, it might help to outline both sides of the argument before you start writing. When you write the essay, you will need to choose one side to focus on. But as you prepare, having a side-by-side list of points can be helpful in developing your thesis.

Also, by arguing for the opposite side of your opinion, you will learn which points you need to better address in your essay. You will learn more about the topic, and you will gain more vocabulary words to enrich the essay.

As an example, you might be writing an essay arguing that people should drink less coffee. To argue both sides, you’ll need to consider the opposite side: the benefits of coffee. How will people quit if they are addicted? What about the antioxidants in coffee? Aren’t those good for you? Really explore the entire concept (both sides of the argument) before you write.

Proper grammar is difficult for even the most fluent English speakers. Because you are learning English, you actually have an advantage. Many native speakers learned improper grammar from the start. It’s difficult to undo the damage caused by a lifetime of writing improperly.

As you learn the English language, make a serious effort to practice your grammar and sentence structure. One way to spot improper grammar in your own English writing is to read each sentence backwards (start with the last word and end with the first). This way, you won’t be fooled by how the words sound when you read them in your head.

Is everything in the correct tense (past, present, future, etc.)? If you’re writing about plurals, are the possessive nouns plural? Are the apostrophes in the right places? Does every sentence end with a punctuation mark (period, question mark, exclamation point)? Reading the text backwards makes you focus on the rules of grammar instead of the flow of the sentence.

You might have learned a large number of fancy words when studying for an entrance exam. But before you start using them in academic essays, be very sure you know what they mean in the context of your essay. This is where the dictionary can come in handy .

A thesaurus is another valuable tool when writing an essay. A thesaurus tells you synonyms, or words that have the same or a similar meaning to the word you look up. It’s important because it can add some volume to your essay and increase the impact of your words.

For example, if you’re writing about cooking, the words “stir” and “add” might come up a lot. This repetition is boring for a reader.

So instead of constantly saying, “Add the tomato” and “add the eggs,” a thesaurus will teach you to say things like “whisk in the eggs” or “gently fold in the tomatoes.” See? It sounds a lot better and adds interest to your essay.

Visual Thesaurus is a resource that works just like a regular thesaurus, but it also shows you the connections between the words. For example, if you type in the word “stir,” you’ll immediately see a whole circle of other words connected to “stir” with lines. From there, you can click on any of the words in the circle (like “move,” in this case) and then see all the words related to that word. This helps you find and learn new words quickly, and it’s also fun!

Once the essay is written, go back through the writing to find any sentences that seem too long or wordy. Break these into two or more sentences.

For example, the following sentence is too long, which makes it unclear:

If you want to write in another language, you need to practice writing in creative ways, like writing on a blog, writing fun poems or texting a friend who speaks the language you’re learning every day.

Instead, you could write it as two clearer sentences (with less repetition of the word “writing”):

If you want to write in another language, you need to practice in creative ways every day. For example, you could start a blog, create fun poems or text a friend.

Do the opposite with sentences you find too short.

Also, look for sentences that are very closely related to one another. If two sentences seem like the thoughts are connected, you can combine them with a semicolon ( ; ).

For example, the following sentences are very closely related:

Learning to write in another language can be really difficult, especially when you’re first getting started. That’s why it helps to practice every day.

That’s why you could write it this way:

Learning to write in another language can be really difficult, especially when you’re first getting started; daily practice is helpful.

Meet up with a friend who is fluent in English (or, at least, more fluent than you). This friend can edit your essay and point out any repetitive errors.

If they find mistakes that you make often, you will be able to watch more closely for that error as you write future essays. This friend will also be able to point out grammatical or spelling errors that you might have missed.

If you don’t have any friends who are fluent in English, you can use a website like Conversation Exchange . This is a free site where native English speakers will correct your writing. In exchange, you correct the writing of someone learning your native language.

Once you and your friend have both reviewed your essay and marked any mistakes, rewrite the whole thing. This step is important. Just noting that you made some mistakes will not help you learn how to avoid them in the future.

By rewriting the essay with the corrections in mind, you will teach yourself how to write those sections properly. You will create a memory of using proper grammar or spelling a word correctly. So, you will be more likely to write it correctly next time.

Lastly, there are some fantastic online resources that can help improve your writing. For instance,  Hemingway Editor  can review your document to find any confusing or wordy sentences. You can rewrite these to make them easier to understand.

From a very tender age, I have seen my grandparents very enthusiastic about morning walks and yoga. My mother would visit the gym and meditation classes regularly. And she was also very careful about what we eat. This is how I developed a liking for physical fitness. Now, I have become very passionate about different types of exercises. Also, I love communicating with people. It makes me feel great when I meet new people, talk to them and help them in any possible way. As a fitness guide, I may get the opportunity to meet new people, understand their problems and make them look and feel better with the right exercises. Moreover, if they have a healthy and fit body, then they would feel more confident than ever.

Also, I don't like to stick to a regular desk job. I feel that as a fitness expert, every working day is going to be different. I will have people of all age groups and from different walks of life coming to me. Each of them would have unique fitness needs. Despite the Singaporean government’s attempts to promote the use of Standard British English through the Speak Good English Movement , the mixed language known as “Singlish” remains the variety spoken on the street and in the home.

Spanglish, a mixture of English and Spanish, is the native tongue of millions of speakers in the United States , suggesting that this variety is emerging as a language in its own right.

Meanwhile, the development of automatic translation software, such as Google Translate , will come to replace English as the preferred means of communication employed in the boardrooms of international corporations and government agencies.

But while numerous dialect words were collected for “young person in cheap trendy clothes and jewellery” – pikey , charva , ned , scally – the word chav was found throughout England, demonstrating how features of the Estuary English spoken in the Greater London area are displacing local dialects, especially among younger generations.

The turn of the 20th century was a period of regulation and fixity – the rules of Standard English were established and codified in grammar books and in the New (Oxford) English Dictionary on Historical Principles , published as a series of volumes from 1884-1928. Today we are witnessing a process of de-standardisation, and the emergence of competing norms of usage.

In the online world, attitudes to consistency and correctness are considerably more relaxed: variant spellings are accepted and punctuation marks omitted, or repurposed to convey a range of attitudes. Research has shown that in electronic discourse exclamation marks can carry a range of exclamatory functions, including apologising, challenging, thanking, agreeing, and showing solidarity.

Capital letters are used to show anger, misspellings convey humour and establish group identity, and smiley-faces or emoticons express a range of reactions.

Getting shorter

According to a new research publication, The Future of English: Global Perspectives, published by the British Council last month, English will retain its position as the world’s most widely spoken language over the next decade and teachers will continue to be at the heart of English learning, even in the face of increased automation, AI, and machine learning.

This is the first publication in a major program of research and global engagement started by the British Council in 2020. The Future of English research program will shine a light on the trends driving the use of English as a global language and provide data to inform policy makers, educators, researchers, and others interested in this important topic.

Key findings:

  • English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is the global language of communication and is likely to retain this position for the next decade and beyond.
  • English will continue to play an important role, increasingly doing so alongside other languages to provide rich linguistic opportunities for learners all over the world.
  • There is a strong connection between the desire to learn English and the need for teachers, even when new technologies are considered.
  • The private sector can fill the gaps in public-sector language education provision and can increase opportunities for young people. However, the quality of some private provision is variable, and the report recommends greater collaboration between public and private providers.
  • Policymakers should continuously review the approach to assessing English proficiency to make sure assessment practices stay relevant for today’s study, work, and social interactions.
  • Technology has the potential to help greater numbers of students access language learning. But the publication found that it also risks widening the divide between people who have access to technology and those who do not.
  • Change is happening. The report notes that there has been a gradual, industry-led shift away from the ideal of mother-tongue fluency toward a more applied and contextualized approach to language proficiency.

The British Council will be driving data collection globally to inform future research. As part of their long-term commitment, they have initiated a major new Future of English research grant scheme, awarding the first four grants to UK-led international projects in 2022. Alongside the new publication, the British Council is set to unveil a new Future of English touring exhibition. Mark Walker, director of English and exams at the British Council, commented: “At the British Council, English language teaching, learning, and assessment are at the heart of what we do. I love life and enjoy it a lot, I participate in many sports activities and I am very good at some of them. Two years ago I was completely different, I don’t give the future life any importance, I live my day, I enjoy, I study and I don’t do much.

Until we faced the Corona crisis and I faced the disease, and I knew that I was living incorrectly, whether in my diet, or the life I was following.

So recently, I made my future plans and decided to stick to them so that my life would be better in the future.

The plans for the future are:

1- Eat a healthy diet

I am now keen to eat healthy foods and pay attention to the types of foods that help in raising immunity mainly, and pay attention to the types of vegetables that I eat and know the benefits they contain.

2- The order of the study

I am now more interested in studying, and I do not do any sports activity unless I complete my homework and understand my lessons well so as to guarantee myself a future career in the future.

3- Develop future plans for the type of job I want to obtain and work in an attempt to achieve this, in addition to plans for other matters, whether short-term or long-term, and strive to achieve them individually and everything on time.

This makes me feel that I am accomplishing tasks, and I am very happy with achieving my goals and being successful in them.

And if I stop or fail in a task, I put it back and try to succeed in it or reach an advanced step that I have not reached before until I succeed in the end and complete the work.

I also like to make some long-term plans and goals for myself, such as university, graduation day, job, dream house, car. Such things I like very much to identify and strive to achieve.

In Maryland, female migrant laborers face an uncertain future as sea levels rise – photo essay

For the women who pick and prepare Maryland’s famous crab, the once profitable work is far more uncertain – and the climate crisis has had a damaging impact

In the evening light, Maribel Malagón stepped outside into a rain storm.

It was late October and Malagón, 53, had worked all day picking crab off the eastern shore of Maryland . That night, she and a handful of other seasonal workers walked to a neighbor’s house for an evening of prayer. On the way, Malagón clutched a pendant of St Judas, the patron saint of lost causes, that hung around her neck; she hoped he would hear her prayers for more work.

About an hour later, when the women were ready to call it a night, the coastal waters had risen so high that the road leading back to their house was completely submerged.

“We didn’t know which way to go. We were afraid that we would fall into the ditches,” Malagón said in Spanish, thinking back on that night two years ago. To make it back home, the women waded through knee-high murky waters. “The island is changing every year.”

For more than 20 years, Malagón has been coming to work in crab processing plants on Hoopers Island, one of the many island communities in the Chesapeake Bay.

Hoopers Island, a chain of small islands linked by causeways, has been the center of the state’s seafood industry since the early 1900s. Due to its low-lying nature, the region has faced erosion and destructive storms over the years.

But rising sea levels are increasing the frequency of flooding, creating uncertainty for the village’s watermen and their families, who have long depended on the seafood industry for their livelihoods. The situation is especially worrying for female migrants such as Malagón, who have limited job prospects back home in Mexico and wonder how long they will be able to work on the island.

Twenty-four years ago, when Malagón first arrived on the island, her output was prolific. With the precision of a machine and a sharp tiny knife in hand, she would break off the claws, crack open the shells, remove the legs, and scrape out the white meat into containers in seconds. She estimates picking between 40 and 48lb of crab meat in her eight-hour shift.

Now, she says 10 hours could go by, and she’ll only have picked 30lb. She suspects the crab population has decreased in number and size over the years.

“The crab was huge in my first years here. Our hands would hurt from how big they were. We produced a lot of pounds, but unfortunately, we were paid $2 a pound back then,” said Malagón, who works for one of the five crab houses that remain.

Aubrey Vincent, the owner of Lindy’s Seafood, a processing plant on the island, said wages have significantly increased for her employees. They make about $16 an hour, compared to four or five years ago when they made $7.52 an hour, she said.

Some employers pay workers per pound, so the more abundant the catch and meatier the crabs, the more money the women can send home.

“For the past five or six years at least, the work is not 100% consistent every season, and it seems to sometimes vary across workplaces,” said Julia Coburn, director of projects and special initiatives at Centro de los Derechos del Migrante (CDM), an advocacy group that supports workers in the region.

“The workers are coming with certain expectations about what they can pick in a season and how much pay they can take home, and that’s changing. It’s having a widespread impact on their families beyond their immediate circumstances.”

Vincent said the unpredictable nature of the work has to do more with shifting environmental conditions and weather than any fluctuations in crab availability. She described an industry at odds with numerous economic conditions.

“You’ve got a certain amount of costs [of doing business] that have gone up, just like everybody else’s expenses,” she said.

Crab populations fluctuate yearly and have always been difficult to predict. But recent years have raised concerns among the state’s seafood houses, which have relied on the temporary worker program since the 1980s, to stay open.

Each winter, when crabs are in semi-hibernation, Maryland and Virginia conduct a survey to estimate the number of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. In the mid-1990s to the late 2000s, there was a dramatic decline in the blue crab population. Biologists, as well as the federal and state governments, believed that the problem was due to overfishing and poor water quality, causing a decline in habitat and food, which ultimately led to restrictions on the number of crabs caught for commercial sale in 2008.

The 2022 survey estimated 227 million crabs, the lowest ever recorded in the survey’s 33-year history . This led to new limits on the number of male and female crabs watermen could harvest. In 2023, the population bounced back to 323 million , a 40% increase; while these figures are encouraging, scientists urge continued vigilance based on low numbers of juvenile crabs.

Today, researchers believe overfishing is less likely to be the sole contributing factor, and instead argue that factors related to the climate crisis could be affecting blue crab reproduction and survival.

“We’re certainly seeing evidence in the data that reproductive success is declining,” said Tom Miller, a professor of fisheries science at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences who studies blue crab populations.

The climate crisis could affect the blue crab population in other ways. With shorter winters, crabs could face a longer fishing period, meaning more of them would be caught, said Miller. However, he added that the impact is unclear and an active area of research. Ocean acidification may also contribute to the shells of blue crabs becoming less strong, making them more susceptible to predators.

Conservationists also believe pollution and the recent decline in the Bay’s underwater grasses is probably contributing to low blue crab numbers. Another factor could be the presence of the invasive blue catfish in the Chesapeake Bay.

“They’re going to be doubly impacted by not only shorter winters, but the shells will become less strong than they once were. There’s a lot changing in the world for crabs,” said Miller.

Despite the unpredictable and temporary nature of the work, many women in central Mexico vie for these positions when recruiters come to towns, hoping to score work authorization.

“What we make here in a day would take us a week to make back home,” said Elia Ramírez Rangel, a crab-picker from Hidalgo.

For women in particular, there is a dearth of job opportunities in their communities in Mexico and abroad in the US. For some, crab-picking is their best chance of finding sustainable work, said Coburn.

“There is no source of work back home,” a laborer working on the island for 14 years said in Spanish. She spoke to the Guardian on condition of anonymity for fear of employer retaliation.

In 1996, she left Mexico to make a living picking crabs in the Carolinas. She described having to make the arduous decision to leave her two children, aged nine and 11, in the care of her sister and family friends. Over the years, with her earnings and faith in God, she said she was able to afford a house and basic necessities like food and clothing for her children, who are now grown.

“It’s been very difficult for me to be far away from them. Even though they’re grown up, I still feel like there’s a void,” she said in Spanish. “When I left them, I didn’t see their achievements, for example, in school. I missed their birthdays.”

In 2021, women made up just 12% of H-2B visa recipients to the US . On Hoopers Island, these women often describe coming to the US for work out of necessity. For nine months out of the year, they report leaving their families and children behind for a steady, albeit seasonal, paycheck.

Some workers, like Malagón, come to Hoopers Island year after year to work in the local seafood industry, so long as their seasonal work visas are granted. Her father spent decades picking under the hot sun in California’s farmlands as a bracero. At the age of 22, she said poverty and desperation led her to follow in her father’s footsteps; later, she switched to picking crabs, a job her father described to her more suited for women.

Over the course of the 20th century, crab-picking in the US became gendered and racialized work. Research shows picking crab meat was work delegated to women based on beliefs that their hands are typically smaller and more nimble. Some scholars argue hiring immigrant workers was a way to pay women less for the work.

Crab houses say they have turned to workers from Mexico in recent decades because of a local labor shortage. In order to obtain visas, they need to prove local workers are not able to fulfill those jobs. Before the 1980s it was low-paid work largely carried out by Black women .

The journey from central Mexico to Maryland involves an arduous three-day journey by bus. For Malagón, the biggest sacrifice has been the time spent away from her sisters, mother and son.

“Leaving was horrible,” said Malagón, who sends money home to her ageing father. Seasons spent laboring abroad have allowed her to transform her family’s once-dilapidated property in the countryside of Guanajuato into a comfortable living space.

“The grace of God has given me license to build everything I wanted. I have comforts that I didn’t have before,” Malagón said in Spanish. “We used to sleep on the floor when we were kids, but now, thank God, we have beds. We’ve got a fridge, we’ve got a TV.”

With the rising cost of living and less predictable hours, some women report earning less than they once did.

Previously, working 10-hour days six days a week could earn them $280 a week, but now, with workers reporting dwindling crab harvests, they sometimes only work three to four days a week and for shorter periods of time. Vincent said women have the opportunity to earn above their hourly rate if they are more productive.

Other crab-house owners acknowledge that workers may take home less pay depending on the harvest. Jay Newcomb, the former owner of Old Salty’s, a popular crab house and restaurant on the upper island, said his employees make $5 a pound or $17.50 an hour.

“That can fluctuate due to the quality of crabs, males versus females, the size of the crabs. Some days it may be better but we have to pay whatever is the highest,” said Newcomb, who downsized his operations in 2021 and sold Old Salty’s to open a smaller restaurant on nearby Taylors Island.

The federal average rate is currently $16.42 an hour.

To fill their idle hours, many of the women make phone calls home, watch TV together, or look for ways to earn extra income. Currently, workers in Maryland’s seafood industry are exempt from minimum wage and overtime protections under state law .

Without public transportation, they often pay or rely on favors from acquaintances to drive them 40 minutes to the nearest city of Cambridge for errands.

Over time the repetitive hand motion of picking crab can result in arthritis, back pain, allergies to crab meat, and cuts to their hands from working quickly with the knives used to cut the shells open, according to CDM. Vincent acknowledged that crab picking, like other production jobs, can be physically demanding.

The advocacy group also said that women are disincentivized from reporting work-related issues or take sick days because their immigration status is tied to their employer, making them susceptible to labor abuses. Vincent said she provides an anonymous tip line where employees can report issues.

Despite the challenges, the women emphasize that they are grateful for the opportunity to work and note that there have been some improvements over time.

Today migrant workers have successfully gained more labor protections in part due to laborer testimony and a coalition of groups such as CDM, which have fought for policies that improve working conditions.

Some women have begun organizing a Comité de Defensa, where they discuss ongoing issues such as Covid-19 vaccine information, accessing healthcare in this remote region, and how to report work-related injuries. Part of that work also involves disseminating information about their rights with other women on the island and their families, many of whom are also contractors.

This three-and-a-half-mile stretch of land known as Hoopersville is the middle island of the three that make up Hoopers, dividing the Honga River from the Chesapeake Bay.

Surrounded by a lush ecosystem of marshland, wildlife and tall seagrass, the women are also geographically and socially isolated.

Nestled in Dorchester county, a tight-knit community with predominantly conservative values, the women say they turn to their faith in God and seek solace in each other’s company while away from home.

The narrow bridge connecting the middle to the upper island routinely floods in high tide, leaving the women trapped. Lower Hoopers Island, formerly Applegarth, became uninhabitable due to erosion, and a hurricane washed away the bridge in 1933.

Malagón vividly remembers the first time she saw the bay’s waters encroaching on the doorstep of the house in 2006. “When I looked outside, I was terrified,” she said. “We had never seen the tide rise that high. Now we see it as more normal.”

Flooding has become routine in recent years, threatening the daily lives and futures of locals and women alike.

The Chesapeake Bay has risen by about one foot during the past century, which is nearly double the global average. By 2050, sea levels are projected to rise by as much as two feet. Climate models predict that over half of Dorchester county, the third-largest county in Maryland by land area, could be underwater by the end of the century.

Vincent said she has an emergency management plan for a major flooding event during work hours, where she would evacuate her employees, but says there’s only so much she’s responsible for as an employer.

CDM argues there is a pressing need for climate adaptation measures from both governments and employers to safeguard seasonal workers’ wellbeing in the long run.

“With roads washing out, the communication lines go down – it just increases all these layers of vulnerability,” said Coburn.

“The truth is it’s very beautiful living here – except when the tide rises,” said the laborer who has worked on the island for 14 years. During a recent grocery trip to Walmart, 40 minutes away, she said her housemates were unable to return to the island because the bridge was closed due to flooding.

Language barriers can make it difficult for women to stay informed and they often rely on word of mouth from other workers about the bridge flooding.

With every passing season, the grueling nature of the job and looming precarity can take a toll emotionally and physically – some of the women question whether it’s worth coming back.

“As long as we’re here, we’re going to make the most of it,” said Clara Ramrez, a worker at GW Hall & Son, one of the crab processing plants on the island. (GW Hall & Son did not respond to requests for comment.)

Some owners share a common sentiment.

“We just do the best we can with what we’ve got, and ultimately, everybody’s goal is the same: to try and make a living,” said Vincent.

Back at the house, a group of women started to arrive for the new crab season that started on 1 April.

This year more visas have been made available , and Vincent scored 80 visas for her employees through the lottery system. Speaking via WhatsApp from Mexico in early April, Malagón said she was getting ready to make the trip to Maryland via bus. If all goes well, she and the other workers from Lindy’s will arrive by 15 April.

Newcomb, the former owner of Old Salty’s, said he won 23 employee visas this season, up from the roughly 18 or 20 he’s gotten in previous years.

AE Phillips & Son, another crab house on the island, was unable to obtain visas and will not be operating this season, a major setback for the company and its employees.

Malagón says she has put her faith in God for a bountiful season, with hopes of returning every year to have enough money to retire. Still, she worries for the future of the industry and the region itself.

“If God allows it, my goal is to work for 10 more years. But if there’s no crab, what will we do then?”

Seventy-five years ago this past week, Sam Snead won the Masters Tournament and became the first champion to receive one of Augusta National Golf Club’s green jackets.

Until he died in 2002 , the jacket was his to wear every time he returned to Augusta. These days, it is a sartorial symbol of how, beyond a freighted history and marvelous azaleas and golf’s geopolitical machinations and gallery roars that ripple from Amen Corner to the clubhouse, Augusta National is more enchanted by champions than most places.

Since the start of the month, Lottie Woad has captured the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Eight children were named champions of a junior golf competition after playing at Augusta. More than 30 past Masters winners gathered for dinner to honor Jon Rahm , last year’s champion, and Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hit tee shots to start this year’s tournament. Many of their brethren played afterward, because they are allowed to for life. On Sunday, Scottie Scheffler, who was already familiar with the locker room reserved for past champions, won the 88th Masters.

There may be no place in men’s golf where hope, dazzle and ambition are as abundant as Augusta.

But this past week, all of the possibilities seemed to be on greater display than usual. There was the solar eclipse on Monday, when fans peered skyward, just as Ben Crenshaw and Nick Faldo did here, too. Later on, Tiger Woods , 48 years old and two years removed from the last time he finished a major tournament, made his record 24th consecutive Masters cut. But he faded on Saturday.

Higher up the leaderboard during the third round, players like Ludvig Aberg, Nicolai Hojgaard, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele hunted for their debut major title, while Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa and Cameron Smith looked to build on the magic that had made them champions elsewhere not all that long ago. Scheffler occasionally stumbled, but on Sunday, he dominated and locked down his second Masters victory before the birth of his first child.

Golf enthusiasts often regard a trip to the Masters as the stuff of dreams. It certainly is for players. The Masters represents a shot at becoming one of those champions written into history, with the green jackets and the possibility of forever enchanting Augusta.
