CHINA — A video of a primary school student in Tianjin, China pleading with her father to give her more play time has gone viral on Chinese social media.

In the video that lasted slightly more than two minutes and posted on China’s video sharing platform Douyin on Oct 14, the student named "Ting Ting" can be seen reasoning with her father in between sobs.

“Respectfully, may I ask you a question?” the teary-eyed girl asks.

"Do I treat you badly? Do I have any weaknesses? Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Whatever it is, you can tell me. I will change.

"But I need my free time,” she continues. “I can't spend all my time studying. In order to study, I need work-life balance. Do you understand?

"I've already finished my homework, I've gotten everything done, is it a problem that I play?"

In response, the 47-year-old father replies feebly: “No, fine, you can play. But you cannot play too long.”

The girl comes to her own defence — she sleeps at 9pm and has never played past midnight.

“You’ve been good recently,” her father admits to the indignation of his daughter.

"Recently? I've been a good girl every single day!" she exclaims.

The father goes on to say that he does not have high expectations of his daughter.

"I know," Ting Ting retorts, "but whatever you are asking of me, even a robot couldn't do it. Even if I grew eight hands, I couldn't get any busier!"

Ting Ting then assures her father that she is independent and fully capable of taking care of herself. Instead, she advises her father to shift his focus on dealing with his own issues such as paying the mortgage and earning rent.

“Here are my last words for you,” Ting Ting declares. “Please treasure our childhood times.”

The video, posted on the father-daughter duo’s joint account, gained three million views within two weeks.

Many people who use Douyin praised Ting Ting for being quick-witted and well-spoken, pointing out that she has the talents to be a lawyer.

One commented: “Her logic is sound and points are clear; she said what many adults can’t even think of... She has a knack for debate and a natural gift to be a lawyer.”

Many also supported Ting Ting’s argument.

One Douyin user said: “She has a point, (the parent) got schooled, they should reflect and change.”

Another remarked: “Treasure the times with your child. Dad is wrong, he should apologise.”

HOMEWORK PRESSURES IN CHINA

In China, an aggressive "helicopter" parenting style termed “chicken blood” parenting has replaced tiger mums, American news outlet NPR reported. Helicopter parenting refers to parents who are overly protective and too involved in the lives of their children.

It is a growing trend for school children to have packed schedules full of extracurricular activities and tuition with the most exclusive tutors and trainers, on top of their schooling hours.

A video of a 12-year-old boy in China went viral recently after he broke down while teaching his younger sister mathematics.

The viral video, also posted on Douyin, shows the boy crying and bent over in frustration while he questions why his sister cannot understand his explanation.

An education law to reduce pressures of homework and off-site tutoring on schoolchildren in China was passed in October last year.

The new law holds local governments accountable for making sure that the “twin pressures” of homework and tutoring are reduced and asks parents to give children reasonable time for rest and exercise, Reuters reported.

Texas teacher goes viral on TikTok for never assigning homework

Courtney White, a Texas high school English teacher, doesn’t believe in homework.

“I have never assigned homework during my teaching career,” she told TODAY Parents.

When White, who is in her fourth year of teaching in Alvarado, Texas, posted a video to her Tik Tok account sharing her philosophy on the subject, she didn’t think twice. In the now-viral video , White is seen extending a handshake with the caption “You must be that teacher that doesn’t assign homework.”

@cmw1129 Students do enough work at school, they don’t need more at home! ##teachersoftiktok ##letmeintroducemyself ##fyp ##AirheadsDitchChallenge ##TimeforTENET ♬ original sound - iAmJordi

“I honestly never thought my video would blow up,” the 27-year-old teacher said. “No-homework policies aren't new, they just aren't talked about as much. I am in no way the first teacher to implement this in my classroom so when I made the video I just thought it would be a silly video.”

White’s "silly video" racked up more than a million views and sparked heated debate in the comment section, prompting the educator to record a response video , in which she defended her stance, talking directly to the camera with just one of the critical responses overlaid in the corner:

“There’s no proof that homework is going to make them better students in my class. I respect their time outside of class. They work hard for me all day. They don’t need to go home and do more homework. If they do it at home, it does not show me mastery; it’s extra practice, sure. But it's not practice if they’re doing it wrong. It’s not good practice if they’re cheating. It’s not good practice if they’re having someone else do it," she said. "Most of my students are high schoolers. They have jobs, they have FFA, they have sports, they’re in practice, they’re in band. They have other responsibilities outside of school. Some of them are going home and taking care of their younger siblings, because their parents are at work. Some of them just need to go home and sleep. Some of them have to go home and worry about how they’re going to eat, because there’s no food at their house. So if I also give them hours of homework, when do they have time to be kids? When do they have time to relax?”

The second video, which has garnered more than four million views, has received comments that range from “TEACHER OF THE YEAR”, to “Or is it because when you give them homework it means more work for you too to grade it.”

“I have received some backlash from people who claim that I am coddling my students or not preparing them for college,” White said. “My response to that is simple, homework does not have true benefits if it is not being done properly. I have students that need additional support at home and if they don't get their accommodations then the homework will not be beneficial for them. Teaching isn't one size fits all so my method works for my kids.”

White has taken her viral moment in stride.

“This whole experience has been crazy, but the outpouring of love and respect that I have been getting is amazing,” she shared, adding that the large majority of the reactions have been positive and from students. “I haven't really heard from a lot of parents, but the ones that have reached out have been positive. Some are even grateful that their kids are getting a small break from their crazy workloads that have been coming home.”

Dr. Shannon Curry, clinical psychologist and director of the Curry Psychology Group in Orange County, California, shared that with more parents working from home, adults are likely bearing witness to the academic pressures kids face.

“It’s an easily identifiable concern, because it’s unsettlingly familiar to all of us adults who are scrambling around trying to find a moment of solace in our own lives— we know how it feels to give so much of our time and attention to obligations that we have little left for much else,” Curry said.

She added that when a child’s entire day is dedicated to academics, they miss out on other activities that are crucial for their overall development and well-being.

“Studies have linked longer amounts of time spent on homework to inadequate social and emotional development, maturity, sense of identity and self-esteem, and a higher risk of mental and physical health issues,” Curry explained.

Despite the mixed reaction to her social media videos, White stands behind everything she has posted... and still won’t be assigning any homework.

“There will always be negative people trying to bring you down, but you have to focus on the positive,” she shared. “I love teaching and I will always show up for my students, despite what anyone has to say about my teaching methods. Teachers are heroes and I respect each and every one of them.”

Teacher Defends Her No Homework Policy In Viral TikTok Video

Lex Gabrielle

It's clear to many people across the country that this year is not a "normal" school year for anyone. Staff, teachers, students, and families are all looking for ways to cope in the new age of education during a global pandemic. With many schools operating on remote or hybrid schedules, it's hard to keep track of everything and all of the schoolwork, too.

Some teachers are trying to figure out ways to help their students in the most efficient way possible.

homework viral video

Some teachers are going for the "asynchronous" instruction, which means students work at their own pace and they do things on their own time. Other teachers are trying to work out live instructions.

One teacher online has been making waves online for sharing that she doesn't give homework to her students.

homework viral video

Courtney White is a teacher from Texas who has over 500,000 followers on her social media pages. She frequently shares photos and stories of experience as a teacher and even gives advice and tips to other educators.

The Alvarado High School teacher recently shared that she does not assign her students homework.

Many social media users criticized White for not giving her students homework, stating that, "homework is supposed to show proof the kids are learning." However, White disagreed.

In a TikTok video on her account, the teacher explained just why she thinks homework doesn't actually work for some kids.

"There’s no proof that homework is going to make them better students in my class. I respect their time outside of class, they work hard for me all day, they don’t need to go home and do more homework.

Most of my students are high schoolers. They have jobs, they have FFA, they have sports, they’re in practice, they’re in band, they have other responsibilities outside of school," she said.

White doesn't agree with the notion that homework makes them a "better student" in her class.

“Some of them are going home and taking care of their younger siblings because their parents are at work. Some of them just need to go home and sleep. Some of them have to go home and worry about how they’re going to eat because there’s no food at their house,” she said.

She also said that kids deserve a break sometimes.

“So, if I also give them hours of homework, when do they have time to be kids? When do they have time to relax? Because when you get off of work, you want to go home and relax," she added.

Some people online agreed with the teacher's approach to education.

homework viral video

Some people agreed that giving homework is extra and superfluous. Some people believe that kids should be learning in school and not at home, on their own time.

Other teachers even agreed with White, saying that it doesn't matter what they do at home if they don't understand the work in school.

homework viral video

White's post went viral enough that other educators and teachers began to weigh in on whether or not it was good for kids to get homework. One teacher even said that if a child doesn't understand concepts in school, they won't magically understand at home.

However, some people disagreed with White and said that homework teaches accountability and responsibility.

homework viral video

Some people commented on White's methods saying that depriving students of homework means they don't get a chance to learn accountability and responsibility. Also, they added that homework forces students to independently and critically think.

What do you think, is homework a good or bad thing?

A teacher has gone viral for charging third-graders 'rent' and letting them spend fake money on homework passes

  • A North Carolina teacher has created a simulated economy for her third-grade students.
  • The children earn fake money for classroom jobs and pay rent for their desks and chairs.
  • The classes, which aim to teach financial responsibility, have gone viral on TikTok.

Insider Today

A North Carolina third-grade teacher 's innovative approach to teaching finance has gone viral.

Shelby Lattimore , who has turned her classroom into a simulated economy, charges her students "rent" for their desks and chairs and allows them to buy classroom perks, including homework passes, as part of lessons in financial responsibilities.

Lattimore's videos, which document these classes, have more than 27 million likes on TikTok.

In her third-grade classroom in Charlotte, students earn fake money for performing various jobs, such as holding doors open, cleaning up, and assisting the teacher.

The jobs, which don't all have the same salary, result in a Friday "payday," when the students can use some of their earnings to purchase rewards , such as lunch with their teacher, free time, or even homework passes.

The ultimate reward — being a teacher for a day — costs $30 in the imaginary currency.

The lessons come with other miniature financial lessons , such as always counting the change you get back and never handing over a whole wallet to the cashier.

In one TikTok video, Lattimore says: "A lot of my kids come from families that live check to check and are not in the best financial situation, so I don't think they're too young to ever learn how to handle money, how to use money, and how they want to use their money."

In a 2021 survey by Greenlight , a debit-card company for kids and parents, 74% of teens said they didn't feel confident in their personal-finance knowledge, and a similar percentage — 73% — said they wanted to learn more.

Lattimore told NBC News the lessons gave students practical life skills for the real world and taught them to appreciate what their guardians were going through, but in "a safer environment."

One parent, Brittany Sales, told NBC her daughter Marlii had gained valuable insights into money management through Lattimore's lessons.

"She just thought it grew on trees and she could spend it," Sales told the news outlet. "We literally learned so much from how she taught it."

The approach also appears to have benefited Lattimore herself, who has more than 870,000 followers on TikTok.

She told NBC News she had earned six figures from monetizing her TikTok content and collaborating with brands.

"My teacher salary is not even half of that," Lattimore told the news outlet.

‘Hard news’: Schools facing funding cuts

A high school teacher has gone viral after she recorded a video explaining she doesn’t believe in homework.

Courtney White, of Texas in the US, refuses to assign “more work” to her students saying there is “no proof” it going to make them “better students in my class”.

She shared a clip on TikTok about her philosophy on homework with her more than half a million followers, which immediately sparked a contentious debate on whether homework is a necessity.

“Students do enough work at school, they don’t need more at home!” she captioned the now viral video.

Many students agreed with her approach saying it motivates them to do class work.

“Homework is a big reason why some students get bad grades. They could know everything in class but just not have time to work on it at home,” one of her followers wrote.

“Thank you!! We are already at school for 7 hours then we go home and have to do more work!” added another student.

However, not everyone back her philosophy, including fellow teachers who called her out for “not doing her job properly”.

“Isn’t homework practice to make sure they’re actually learning?” one person asked, to which she simply responded, “No, it’s not”.

The backlash forced the 27-year-old to record another video defending her actions.

“I am getting a lot of comments and a lot of people coming at me, a lot of teachers saying I am not doing my job because I am not assigning homework,” she said in the new clip.

“But there is no proof that homework is going to make them better students in my class.

“I respect their time outside of class. They work hard for me all day. They don’t need to go home and do more homework because if they do it at home, it does not show me mastery.”

Ms White said while it is extra practise, it isn’t effective if they’re doing it wrong or cheating.

She also explained most of her students have after school commitments from band and sports practise, to at-home responsibilities.

“Some of them are going home and taking care of their younger sibling because their parents are at work, some of them just need to go home and sleep and some of them have to go home and worry about what they’re going to eat because there’s no food at their house,” she said.

“So, if I also give them hours of homework, when do they have time to be kids and relax...so I am a good teacher and I am doing my job.”

In total, her anti-homework videos have attracted more than 3 million views and thousands of comments, telling the Today show she never thought her posts would “blow up”.

“No-homework policies aren’t new, they just aren’t talked about as much. I am in no way the first teacher to implement this in my classroom so when I made the video I just thought it would be a silly video,” she told the program.

The teacher from Alvarado, Texas, has taken her viral moment in her stride, saying the whole experience has been “crazy”.

“I haven’t really heard from a lot of parents, but the ones that have reached out have been positive. Some are even grateful that their kids are getting a small break from their crazy workloads that have been coming home.”

Despite the mixed reaction, the 27-year-old said she still refuses to assign homework which she has never done throughout her teaching career – however, if a student wants more practice, she’ll send them home with optional work.

“There will always be negative people trying to bring you down, but you have to focus on the positive,” she said. “I love teaching and I will always show up for my students, despite what anyone has to say about my teaching methods. Teachers are heroes and I respect each and every one of them.”

Public schools in one state have been told to brace for “quite significant” funding cuts, as households opt to send their kids to independent schools.

A high school English teacher in the US has gone viral after sharing videos on TikTok explaining why she doesn't give her students homework.

Courtney White from Texas has almost 600,000 followers on TikTok. Many of the 27-year-old's videos are about her work as a teacher.

White shared a short video showing her hand ready for a handshake, as if she were meeting someone, with the words, "You must be that teacher that doesn't assign homework." The caption of the video was: "Students do enough work at school, they don't need more at home!"

The "no homework" video has now been liked 443,000 times and has 14,500 comments. A lot of people wrote that they agreed with White.

However, some people had questions for the teacher. One comment asked, "Isn't homework practice to make sure they're actually learning?"

White has made three more videos explaining why she doesn't assign homework. In one of the videos, she said there is no proof that doing homework makes students work better in class.

"They work hard for me all day. They don't need to go home and do more homework," White said in one of the videos, which now has 1.3 million likes and over 51,000 comments.

White also said that a lot of her students are busy after school, with some having to take care of younger brothers and sisters when they get home. The teacher said that if she gave her students homework, they wouldn't have time to just be kids and relax.

This cheating schoolboy deserves an F for effort — but a “10/10 for cleverness,” according to his mom. Leanne Gormanley from Dalmellington, Scotland, was just getting dinner started when she heard her Amazon Echo device in the same room where her 9-year-old son, Bryce, was supposed to be doing his math homework.

“As I was cooking, I could hear Alexa in the background saying something, so I went into the living room to check — and there I caught him,” the mom told the Daily Mail . “He was completely oblivious to me being there, so I went back into the kitchen, got my phone and videoed.” The resulting viral video, which now has 2.3 million views and more than 34,000 shares on Facebook, shows Bryce sitting on the floor of their home with his back to the camera — as Alexa gives him the answer to a math homework question: “4 times 3 is 12.” Mom can be seen smirking at her camera — turned to selfie mode — in the foreground. Bryce continues asking questions aloud as Mom raises her eyebrow at the camera — looking both disappointed and a little tickled. “Alexa, 8 multiplied by 4?” he asks. Then adds, “Alexa, 6 multiplied by 6?” as Mom holds back laughter.

At Success Academy School, a Stumble in Math and a Teacher’s Anger on Video

A momentary lapse or abusive teaching, in 2014, an assistant teacher at success academy cobble hill secretly filmed her colleague, charlotte dial, scolding one of her students after the young girl failed to answer a question correctly. the children's faces have been blurred and their names obscured to protect their privacy..

By Kate Taylor

  • Feb. 12, 2016

In the video, a first-grade class sits cross-legged in a circle on a brightly colored rug. One of the girls has been asked to explain to the class how she solved a math problem, but she has gotten confused.

She begins to count: “One… two…” Then she pauses and looks at the teacher.

The teacher takes the girl’s paper and rips it in half. “Go to the calm-down chair and sit,” she orders the girl, her voice rising sharply.

“There’s nothing that infuriates me more than when you don’t do what’s on your paper,” she says, as the girl retreats.

The teacher in the video, Charlotte Dial, works at a Success Academy charter school in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. She has been considered so effective that the network promoted her last year to being a model teacher, who helps train her colleagues.

After sending the girl out of the circle and having another child demonstrate how to solve the problem, Ms. Dial again chastises her, saying, “You’re confusing everybody.” She then proclaims herself “very upset and very disappointed.”

homework viral video

The video was recorded surreptitiously in the fall of 2014 by an assistant teacher who was concerned by what she described as Ms. Dial’s daily harsh treatment of the children. The assistant teacher, who insisted on anonymity because she feared endangering future job prospects, shared the video with The New York Times after she left Success in November.

After being shown the video last month, Ann Powell, a Success spokeswoman, described its contents as shocking and said Ms. Dial had been suspended pending an investigation. But a week and a half later, Ms. Dial returned to her classroom and her role as an exemplar within the network.

Success’s own training materials, provided by the network’s leader, Eva S. Moskowitz , say that teachers should never yell at children, “use a sarcastic, frustrated tone,” “give consequences intended to shame children,” or “speak to a child in a way they wouldn’t in front of the child’s parents.”

Ms. Moskowitz dismissed the video as an anomaly. A group of parents gathered by the Cobble Hill school’s principal defended Ms. Dial and said the video did not reflect their experience of the school.

But interviews with 20 current and former Success teachers suggest that while Ms. Dial’s behavior might be extreme, much of it is not uncommon within the network.

Experts Discuss the Success Academy Video

A group of scholars shared their thoughts on effective teaching methods after watching a video of a teacher reacting to a student’s math mistake.

Success is known for its students’ high achievement on state tests , and it emphasizes getting — and keeping — scores up. Jessica Reid Sliwerski, 34, worked at Success Academy Harlem 1 and Success Academy Harlem 2 from 2008 to 2011, first as a teacher and then as an assistant principal. She said that, starting in third grade, when children begin taking the state exams, embarrassing or belittling children for work seen as slipshod was a regular occurrence, and in some cases encouraged by network leaders.

“It’s this culture of, ‘If you’ve made them cry, you’ve succeeded in getting your point across,’” she said.

One day, she said, she found herself taking a toy away from a boy who was playing with it in class, and then smashing it underfoot. Shortly after, she resigned.

“I felt sick about the teacher I had become, and I no longer wanted to be part of an organization where adults could so easily demean children under the guise of ‘achievement,’” said Ms. Sliwerski, who subsequently worked as an instructional coach in Department of Education schools.

Some parents had another view. Clayton Harding, whose son, currently in fourth grade, had Ms. Dial as a soccer coach, said: “Was that one teacher over the line for 60 seconds? Yeah. Do I want that teacher removed? Not at all. Not because of that. Now if you tell me that happens every single day, that’s a different thing. But no one is telling me that, and everyone is telling me about all the amazing things that she does all the other days.”

The mother of the girl in the video, in emails to The Times, initially supported the school and asked that the video not be published, citing her daughter’s privacy. After the network said that Ms. Dial would return to the classroom, she said she was unhappy with the school, but declined to talk further.

Ms. Dial did not respond directly to requests for comment, but gave a statement through the school, saying, “I’m deeply committed to the children and families of our school, and I’m sorry for my lapse in emotional control 15 months ago. As I tell my scholars to do, I will learn from this mistake and be a better teacher for it.”

Ms. Moskowitz said in an interview and a subsequent email that Ms. Dial’s behavior did not match Success’s educational philosophy, but she also called her “a wonderful and committed teacher” and said she had lost her cool because she “so desperately wants her kids to succeed and to fulfill their potential.”

She said Ms. Dial had been reprimanded and had received training in how to be more aware of her emotions and manage them.

She said it was possible that some teachers — “I think it’s really a handful of people” — had misinterpreted the network’s philosophy and that, out of an abundance of caution, the network would provide additional training to all its teachers in the importance of tone in speaking to students.

Still, Ms. Moskowitz said the video was not indicative of any wider problem, and she questioned the motives of the assistant teacher who recorded it.

“This video proves utterly nothing but that a teacher in one of our 700 classrooms, on a day more than a year ago, got frustrated and spoke harshly to her students,” she wrote in her email.

But Joseph P. McDonald, a professor of teaching and learning at New York University’s school of education, who viewed the video at The New York Times’s request, described Ms. Dial’s behavior as “abusive teaching.”

“We don’t see enough here to know for sure that this classroom is typically full of fear, but I bet that it is,” he wrote in an email. “The fear is likely not only about whether my teacher may at any time erupt with anger and punish me dramatically, but also whether I can ever be safe making mistakes.”

Indeed, several of the current and former staff members interviewed said that the network’s culture encouraged teachers to make students fear them in order to motivate them. Carly Ginsberg, 22, who taught for about six months last year at Success Academy Prospect Heights, said teachers ripped up the papers of children as young as kindergarten as the principal or assistant principal watched. She once witnessed a girl’s humiliation as the principal mocked her low test score to another adult in front of the child.

In one instance, the lead kindergarten teacher in her classroom made a girl who had stumbled reciting a math problem cry so hard that she vomited. Ms. Ginsberg resigned in December because she was so uncomfortable with the school’s approach. “It felt like I was witnessing child abuse,” she said, adding, “If this were my kindergarten experience, I would be traumatized.” She is now teaching in Los Angeles.

Five of the teachers interviewed, including Ms. Sliwerski, described leaders at multiple Success schools and a Success supervisor in the teacher training program that the network runs with Touro College endorsing the practice of ripping up work if it was deemed not to reflect sufficient effort. The purpose, they said, was to get students’ attention and demonstrate urgency.

At some schools, there was even a term for it. “It was ‘rip and redo,’” Ayanna Legros, who taught at Success Academy Harlem 1 for about seven months in the 2013-14 school year, said. “It’s embarrassing” for students, she said, “so the idea is that you won’t want to ever have that moment again in the classroom.” She is now teaching part time while in graduate school.

Ms. Powell, the Success spokeswoman, pointed out that Ms. Sliwerski had left the network five years ago, midyear, and that both Ms. Ginsberg and Ms. Legros had also left midyear after only about six months. Ms. Powell also said that the principal of the Prospect Heights school could not respond on short notice to Ms. Ginsberg’s allegations.

Ms. Moskowitz insisted that she had never seen a Success teacher rip up a child’s paper, though she was in schools “3-5 hours a week.”

As to making children cry, Ms. Moskowitz said that no one at Success purposefully reduced children to tears, but that “children cry a lot” and a child crying did not necessarily mean that a teacher had done something wrong. “Olympic athletes, when they don’t do well, they sometimes cry,” she said in a talk at New York Law School last month . “It’s not the end of the world.”

Ms. Moskowitz repeatedly described the former assistant teacher as “unethical” for not sharing the video with the school’s principal, Kerri Nicholls, at the time she took it. Ms. Moskowitz said that the network had shown itself to be “very quick to investigate” when such matters were brought to its attention, as when a principal at one of its schools created a “Got to Go” list of difficult children whom he wanted to leave the school.

But the assistant teacher said that, because Ms. Nicholls had made it clear that Ms. Dial was a favorite of hers, she did not think raising her concerns would have any effect other than to possibly imperil her own job. Success teachers are not unionized and can be fired at will.

Around the same time that she took the video, the assistant teacher said, she saw Ms. Dial become frustrated with a girl who was playing with her hair. She said Ms. Dial proceeded to pull the girl’s hair into a ponytail in a manner that she perceived as rough. She shared her concerns with another staff member, who in turn told Ms. Nicholls. Ms. Nicholls called the assistant teacher in for a meeting, but seemed more annoyed at her than concerned about Ms. Dial’s behavior, the assistant teacher said.

Ms. Nicholls said in an interview that after investigating the incident she had found “nothing inappropriate aside from” the assistant teacher’s “lack of reporting her concerns.”

Dr. McDonald, the N.Y.U. professor, who also sits on the board of the Great Oaks Charter School on the Lower East Side, said that the behavior in the video violated an important principle of schooling.

“Because the child’s learning was still a little fragile — as learning always is initially — she made an error,” he said in his email. “Good classrooms (and schools) are places where error is regarded as a necessary byproduct of learning, and an opportunity for growth. But not here. Making an error here is a social offense. It confuses others — as if deliberately.”

A boy with no access to the internet was recently filmed doing his school homework in the story of a shopping mall, and the video is now going viral.

The 10-year-old student was filmed using a tablet in a store in Recife, Brazil to do research. And people were touched to learn that the child hadn’t been kicked out of the store, but instead was invited inside by a store employee. The boy was allowed to use the gadget and WiFi to finish his assignment.

The video – first shared on Imgur – went viral after it was shared on Twitter, where it got over six million views. Claiming it was “Humanity at its best”, the Twitter user who was among the first to share it, explained why the boy was using the gadget.

Humanity at its best…❤️ This child doesn’t have internet access at home, so a store in the shopping mall allows him to use their tablet to do homework. pic.twitter.com/YEn2qJVDuB — FierceWarriorNStilettos (@InactionNever) November 13, 2019

The student has been identified as Guilherme Santiago, a class V student at the Abílio Gomes Municipal School. The youngest of four brothers, Guilherme lives in a low-income locality where residents, and schools, lack facilities like internet.

“At the institution, 278 students study, but there are only 12 tablets for student use. In addition, the equipment only has internet when the school board releases, not to misuse the use,” Brazilian website G1 reported.

Initially, the eager student was working on a mobile phone, but the Samsung store employee spotted him, and asked him what he was doing. The student was then allowed to use the tablet in the store.

Festive offer

“I didn’t say anything, I was scared. The man [store clerk] asked what I was doing. It was a work about the Southern Region. It was worth 10 [minutes] and I took 10,” the boy told G1 .

Santiago’s family had no idea about how he had completed his assignments, and only came to know after coming across the viral video. “He likes to study. He commented that he has been to the mall two or three times,” Aylla Martins, the boy’s sister, said.

After the clip went viral, Samsung donated two tablets to the boy.

“Everything is already right for his tablet and we will also assist in the insurance of the device against accidents,” Gustavo Duque, service manager of Nagem group and responsible for Shopping Recife’s Samsung store, told the NN1  website.

Many Brazilians also explained that the internet is quite expensive in the country and low-income families can’t afford tablets or computers. They also pointed out that public schools lack the funds to provide students with internet. A Twitter user’s thread explaining the situation in Brazil caught the attention of many:

Internet is expensive and slow in Brazil, as you can see, and some even charge extra if you wanna use a Wi-Fi router. So expensive in fact, that many poor people don’t have computers at home and access internet only via their phones. And those are some packets values for phones. pic.twitter.com/belKYGlHXO — TT | BLUE LINK(青いリンク), aposentado de ser feliz (@BLUELINKBR) November 15, 2019

While it’s nice of the store, this breaks my heart. It’s terrible that libraries and schools cannot provide disadvantaged children the opportunity to study like everyone else in 2019. Internet access is as crucial to learning as textbooks in this era. 😢 — Sonia (@Chanel617SN) November 14, 2019

Truly touching: this corporation’s faceless store didn’t enforce its policy to throw out non-consumers, and allowed a child access to a nigh infinite, privatized resource so said child could participate in a broken education system. 😭❤️😭❤️😭🌎☮️ https://t.co/BCJxV4pe9r — Mario Castañeda (@wrackune) November 15, 2019

Fake Footage of Iran’s Attack on Israel Is Going Viral

Photo showing an antimissile system operates after Iran launched drones and missiles towards Israel as seen from...

In the hours after Iran announced its drone and missile attack on Israel on April 13, fake and misleading posts went viral almost immediately on X. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a nonprofit think tank, found a number of posts that claimed to reveal the strikes and their impact, but that instead used AI-generated videos, photos, and repurposed footage from other conflicts which showed rockets launching into the night, explosions, and even President Joe Biden in military fatigues.

Just 34 of these misleading posts received more than 37 million views, according to ISD. Many of the accounts posting the misinformation were also verified, meaning they have paid X $8 per month for the “blue tick” and that their content is amplified by the platform’s algorithm. ISD also found that several of the accounts claimed to be open source intelligence (OSINT) experts, which has, in recent years, become another way of lending legitimacy to their posts.

One X post claimed that “WW3 has officially started,” and included a video seeming to show rockets being shot into the night—except the video was actually from a YouTube video posted in 2021. Another post claimed to show the use of the Iron Dome , Israel's missile defense system, during the attack, but the video was actually from October 2023. Both these posts garnered hundreds of thousands of views in the hours after the strike was announced, and both originated from verified accounts. Iranian media also shared a video of the wildfires in Chile earlier this year, claiming it showed the aftermath of the attacks. This, too, began to circulate on X.

“The fact that so much mis- and disinformation is being spread by accounts looking for clout or financial benefit is giving cover to even more nefarious actors, including Iranian state media outlets who are passing off footage from the Chilean wildfires as damage from Iranian strikes on Israel to claim the operation as a military success,” says Isabelle Frances-Wright, director of technology and society at ISD. “The corrosion of the information landscape is undermining the ability of audiences to distinguish truth from falsehood on a terrible scale.”

X did not respond to a request for comment by time of publication.

Though misinformation around conflict and crises has long found a home on social media, X is often also used for vital real-time information . But under Elon Musk’s leadership, the company cut back on content moderation, and disinformation has thrived. In the days following the October 7 Hamas attack, X was flooded with disinformation , making it difficult for legitimate OSINT researchers to surface information. Under Musk, X has promoted a crowdsourced community notes function as a way to combat misinformation on the platform to varying results. Some of the content identified by ISD has since received community notes, though only two posts had by the time the organization published its findings.

“During times of crisis it seems to be a repeating pattern on platforms such as X where premium accounts are inherently tainting the information ecosystem with half-truths as well as falsehoods, either through misidentified media or blatantly false imagery suggesting that an event has been caused by a certain actor or state,” says Moustafa Ayad, ISD executive director for Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. “This continues to happen and will continue to happen in the future, making it even more difficult to know what is real and what is not.”

And for those that are part of X’s subscription model and ad revenue sharing model , going viral could potentially mean making money.

Though it’s not clear that any of the users spreading fake or misleading information identified by ISD were monetizing their content, a separate report released by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) earlier this month found that between October 7 and February 7, 10 influencers, including far-right influencer Jackson Hinkle , were able to grow their followings by posting antisemitic and Islamophobic content about the conflict. Six of the accounts CCDH examined were part of X’s subscription program, and all 10 were verified users. The high-profile influencers who are part of X’s ad revenue sharing program receive a cut of advertising revenue based on ”organic impressions of ads displayed in replies” to their content, according to the company .

Jiri Prochazka plays down UFC 300 viral video of pre-fight ritual: ‘I’m not a psycho’

Jiri Prochazka is a peaceful guy. Really.

That might sound hard to believe given the intensity that the Czech striker brings to all of his fights - Prochazka has not gone to the scorecards since 2016 - but he wants people to know that his peculiar ways are simply a matter of wanting to get in the right mindset before a fight.

Prochazka was seen standing alone outside of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas ahead of his fight with Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 300 and the pre-fight scene went viral as uploader @OGICEY estimated that the former light heavyweight champion was standing around the same spot for at least 20 minutes.

Ran into Jiri Prochazka last night and this man is locked TF in for UFC 300 #UFC300 pic.twitter.com/i2wnYdYU0j — ‎ ᅠ (@OGICEY) April 12, 2024

Following his win over Rakic, Prochazka was asked about the video and he explained what led him to that moment.

“Yeah, that was me,” Prochazka said at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “That’s my ritual, which I’m doing before every fight.

“When you are peaceful and quiet in yourself and when you are really connected to yourself, to the best version of yourself, and when you know what will come, what is before you, one day or two days or a week, it doesn’t matter, you have to work on that every day. They name that the ‘law of attraction,’ so you have to just follow your vision in an honest way.”

There’s no arguing with the results as Prochazka proceeded to walk Rakic down on fight night, marching through Rakic’s brutal leg kicks and firing back with thudding punches in the second round to score his 26th career knockout.

It’s that aggressiveness that has given Prochazka such a fearsome reputation, but he swears that when he’s out and about before a fight, he doesn’t mind fans coming up to greet him.

“I’m not a psycho,” Prochazka said when asked about other people in the video who may have thought to approach him. “It doesn’t matter, we can talk, we can whatever, but there is a time when everybody wants to be alone with our things. That’s my kind of meditation.

“That’s something when I started at 16 years old in high school with these things, to watch my visions of my best version in this life and follow them. This was that video, when I’m doing these things, because when you really want something, it’s not you want something. That dream, that vision wants you too and your work is to stay courageous and take action. That’s all.”

Prochazka rebounded from a tough loss to Alex Pereira at UFC 295 this past November. In that contest, Prochazka and Pereira were competing for a vacant light heavyweight title, but Pereira prevented Prochazka from becoming a two-time champion with a finishing flurry in Round 2.

As much of an honor as it was for every fighter to be part of the UFC’s 300th pay-per-view event, for Prochazka it was just as important to prove to himself that he’s still a contender.

“For me, it was not too much about the event, but after my last fight in New York with Pereira, it was for me important to make a spark inside myself,” Prochazka said. “To show to myself that storm, that hunter inside myself, and I’m very glad for that. Very glad.”

Trump team releases viral video ahead of hush money trial

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign released a new video shortly before his hush money trial was set to start.

The video features footage of past court visits that Trump has made over the last year, with audio from one of his rallies talking about how the Left is "persecuting" him. Trump says in his speech that he is the only person who can save the United States and that “they’re not coming after me, they’re coming after you, and I just happen to be standing in their way.”

“When I walk into that courtroom, I know I will have the love of 200 million Americans behind me, and I will be FIGHTING for the FREEDOM of 325 MILLION AMERICANS!” Trump wrote on Truth Social in reposting the video.

The video ends with Trump stating that “justice will be done” on Nov. 5, the day the U.S. will hold its elections . Trump is the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party, meaning a rematch between him and President Joe Biden is likely.

Ahead of the trial, Trump lamented that he and his team were only given a short amount of time to prepare for it. The trial was initially slated to begin jury selection on March 25, but it was delayed due to the motions filed by Trump’s lawyers, who had initially asked for a 90-day delay.

Monday’s trial relates to Trump’s 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide an alleged hush money payment to former pornography film star Stormy Daniels in 2016. On Saturday, Trump said that he plans to testify in the trial, where he would “tell the truth” while on the stand .

Will Scharf, one of Trump’s lawyers in this trial, argued Sunday that the former president would be a “compelling witness” in this trial. He also stated it was very important to get a politically neutral jury for this trial, as the country is at “the height of election season.”
