Lanka Review, What’s Behind:

Yesteryear glamorous actress Raasi is coming back with a heroine centric thriller Lanka in Sri Muni direction based on telepathy concept. The film created some excitement for its teaser, trailer. Let us see, what the film is all about in Lanka Review.

Lanka Story Review:

Malayalam top and award winning actress Swathi (Ina Saha) joins debutant director Sai (Sai Ronak) to work on a horror short film in Hyderabad. They rent a guest house belonging to Rebecca (Raasi), an expert in telepathy. Strange incidents begin to happen at guest house and one day Swathi goes missing along with Rebecca. Police officers (Supreet, Sathyam Rajesh) are given the investigation duties thus comes Swathi in behaving exactly like Rebecca. What’s the purpose behind Rebecca using telepathy to control Swathi? What is the role of Sharath (Sijju) in the whole story?

Lanka Artists, Technicians Review:

Fundamental story element of telepathy is exciting enough to hear but Sri Muni failed to weave an effective plot around it. Too many assumptions networked into the plot made screenplay go misshaped and complex. A plain screenplay with only telepathy concept could have saved Lanka big time. Sri Muni’s enthusiasm at story etching by adding a human trafficking twist to antagonist characterization diluted the original essence making the output feeble and bewildered. Dialogues are of very ordinary quality and sometimes sounded like a dubbing film. Direction wise, Sri Muni excelled in mid second half while rest is bland, boring and lengthy. Ravi Kumar’s camera work is mediocre like bizarre editing from Karthika Srinivas. Music by Sricharan Pakala is also average stuff. Onto production standards, Rolling Rocks Entertainments banner managed a decent output spending on an experimental project.

About performances, Raasi in central character failed to pillar the film on her shoulders. Her queer looking eyes, abnormal costumes and strength-less dialogues delivery are just pathetic. Ina Saha neither is good looking nor a show stealer as an artist. Sai Ronak hasn’t got anything to do. Sijju is far better than all. Sathya, Sathyam Rajesh, Nalla Venu’s comedy is just ok. Rest, none needs a mention.

Lanka Review Rating Analysis:

Though it is a welcome change among Telugu technicians to spot on scientific points like telepathy but lot more depth and sincerity at narration is needed. Such ideas always look stimulating on paper. Real challenge comes in execution, handling every department potently. Sri Muni exactly failed in this case and his over intelligence bounced big time. Despite having a functional telepathy point, why he shifted the gear to human trafficking, exploitation of female orphans is unknown and that too with inexpressive artists at disposal.

Film begins lifelessly after titles when Sai Ronak, Sathya struggle to find a heroine for their short film. Comedy portions failed miserably. Ina Saha never appeared comfortable to eyes. Raasi’s simple introduction at guest house and proceedings there off could have been far better and scary. Once telepathy point is revealed, story goes haywire leading to a weak interval block when Ina Saha goes missed.

Second half begins promisingly as Raasi’s police station scene is handled better. Then Supreet cracking Raasi’s flashback with Sijju’s entry went smoothly. Later on, many scenes shot on Sijju and Ina Saha in Kerala are interest generating. Once audience are found cheated in a poor screenplay format, climax rushes up.

All in all, Lanka is a simple subject went complicated with unwanted elements. Entanglement of Ina Saha in many problems and projection of Raasi in negative light was more than enough to run Lanka. Instead, Sri Muni made the film a mess. CJ gives Lanka review rating 2 stars and commercially, no hopes at all.

Swathi (Ina Saaha) a National Award-winning actress is in Hyderabad on a professional assignment. In the initial moments itself, it becomes clear that hers is a troubled life. But who is after her is not clear. All that we see is that she is scared for her safety. She gets fearsome nightmares and hallucinations, making the audience wonder if some supernatural danger is upon her. When a young short filmmaker sees her, he finds her to be very beautiful. Not knowing that she is a famous actress in Malayalam, he tries to convince her to act in his short film. She finally accepts his offer.

As it happens in most horrors/thrillers, they (read Swathi, the director, the hero who is played by Sathya, and DoP who is played by Sudarshan) move to a bungalow which looks suspicious. There is a strange character living in that house and it's Rebecca Williams (yesteryear screen diva Raasi), who starts to observe Swathi keenly and strangely right from the first day. Very soon Swathi becomes close to Rebecca, reading a book on Telepathy. But in a few days, the actress goes missing and none else but Rebecca knows about it!.

What Works!

'Lanka' has a good technical output to make it visually pleasing. Sricharan Pakala doesn't go for loud BGM. After watching a horror like 'Shivalinga', this one is a total contrast. The cinematography (V Ravi Kumar) scores well. The shots in the bungalow and the police investigation room are impressive. The element of a lonely woman (read Rebecca) coming with a past of her own is interesting. Comedians Sathya and Sudarshan manage to draw some laughs here and there.

What Doesn't Work!

Leaving aside the emotional touch in the story line, 'Lanka' is all about being convoluted. Before even what kind of danger the heroine is facing is told, she being a monophobic is revealed. That problem eats up much screen space, which it is not integral to the story. If the heroine's nightmares are problematic, even the hero has a day dreaming sequence, thanks to the fact that he loves the girl. And his love story is totally forgotten later!

There comes a story that Rebecca narrates to the police. The story itself turns out to be an artificial element. The dialogues spoken by Raasi's character are difficult to understand at times. Here too, there was no need for such complexity in language. And it's not as if she was a German language teacher in the past!

Nalla Venu's character is a totally misfit.

Performance Score

The performances are generally good. Raasi is convincing as a self-absorbed, psychological woman who smells of peculiarity. Ina is convincing as a damsel in distress. The guy who played the director is good-looking. Leena Sidhu, who plays a cop with a penchant for speaking in affected English irritates. Sathyam Rajesh is forgettable.

Final Verdict

'Lanka' was supposed to be a crime thriller. The element of scientific thriller was smuggled into with no proper rational. Some good technicality and performances aside, the film falls flat because of its old-fashioned narrative style.

Yesteryear lead and talented actress Raasi has made her comeback into the films with the movie Kalyana Vaibhogame where she plays the role of heroine’s mother. Now she is ready to entertain the Telugu audience with the thriller Lanka movie where she plays the key role. This flick is directed by Sri Muni (Raasi’s husband) and produced by Dinesh N and Vishnu Kumar N. Lanka movie released on the same day of Mohanlal’s Black Money film.

Swathi(Ina Saaha) is a Malayalam superstar who comes down to Hyderabad for her personal work. Right when the time comes for her to get back, she decides to act in a short film. The proceedings move to a guest house which is owned by Rebecca(Raasi). Things become quite tough for Swathi as Rebecca starts troubling her throughout the shoot with telepathy. The twist in the tale arises when Swati goes missing from action and the cops automatically nab Rebecca. Why did Rebecca trouble Swathi? What is the whole telepathy connection? To know answers to these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Alajadi Analysis:

From the release of first look poster to the trailer, the film promises the suspense thriller. The latest flick is set against the backdrop of the bungalow. The two-hour-thirteen-minutes suspense movie makes the audience into a scientific thriller. Unnecessary twists, too much of melodrama and a complex narration makes this film go over the top of audience head.

Raasi: She featured in horror drama Lanka for the first time in her career. She done justice to their role.

With a new comer cast, the movie looks amateur in terms of engaging performance.

Technical Team Performance:

SriCharan Pakala had made the music composition for this horror thriller movie. Srimuni had directed it which is like an usual movie with huge sound effects and the characters are not coordinated perfectly. The editing part is not very perfect and the background scoring is made well. The cinematography work was upto the satisfaction.

The trailer and teasers for "Bedurulanka 2012" have piqued people's interest. Despite the fact that Kartikeya's previous films had failed, he seemed confident that this film would bring him much-needed success.

Let's see if the film lives up to his expectations.

Story: In the year 2012, the brother-in-law (Ajay Ghosh) of the president of Bedurulanka village plots to profit from doomsday predictions. In order to instill fear in the villagers, he enlists the aid of priest Brahmam (Srikanth Aiyengar) and bishop Daniel (Ram Prasad). They suggest a solution that could prevent the end of the world.

Shiva (Kartikeya) swears to expose them as they carry out their con job. He, his girlfriend Chitra (Neha Sshetty), and some friends devise a scheme to disprove the end of the world theory.

Artistes’ Performances: Surprisingly, Kartikeya has played a role that is far from a regular hero. He plays a role that has nothing much to do in most parts of the story. In the first half of the film he hardly gets footage. He appears mostly in the second half and he has done his job sincerely.

Neha Sshetty also gets a very regular role.

The film belongs to Ajay Ghosh, Srikanth Aiyenger, and Ram Prasad. They get more footage and more importance. GoparajuRamana as the village president is okay. Raj Kumar Kasireddy is another actor who gets more prominence.

Technical Excellence: Mani Sharma’s music is okay. Two songs are striking. Cinematography and production values are decent. Some dialogues have clicked.

Analysis "Bedurulanka 2012" is marketed as a con thriller; however, it leans more towards comedy or satire. The plot and its elements deviate from those of typical films.

One of its primary strengths is the Doomsday concept and the message it conveys, cautioning against placing trust in false godmen or superstitions. Moreover, the film portrays both Hindu and Christian fake priests.

The director wastes no time in unveiling the central plot and introducing all the characters within the first 45 minutes. However, director Clax encounters difficulty in advancing the film further. With limited material to work with, he heavily relies on the characters and attempts to mock their actions. Unfortunately, the entertainment factor diminishes quickly as the characters repeat the same behaviors.

In comparison, the first half of the film is relatively better. The entire second half revolves around the hero's efforts to expose the deception by priests regarding "Yugantham" (Doomsday) under the supervision of a local leader. Consequently, numerous comical scenes, including those featuring Vennela Kishore and Satya, abound.

The final act abruptly shifts its focus from exposing the deception to delivering the message that one should live life authentically, without wearing a false mask. This sudden change in purpose and tone prompts the director to include a song, disrupting the film's initially promising trajectory.

On the other hand, the film's hero, Kartikeya, does not receive much prominence. He is just one of the many characters in the film.

Overall, “Bedurulanka 2012” shows promise at the outset and delivers some laughs, but it struggles to maintain its momentum until the end, ultimately derailing midway.

కథేంటంటే: కేరళలో ఓ నాటక బృందం అది. అందులో 12మంది నటులు. ఒక్కరే నటీమణి. అందరూ మధ్యతరగతి వారే. ఒక్కొక్కరూ ఒక్కో పని చేసుకుంటూ అవకాశం ఉన్నప్పుడల్లా వివిధ వేదికలపై తమ నాటకాన్ని ప్రదర్శిస్తూ ఉంటారు. ఈ బృందం ప్రదర్శించే నాటికలో వినయ్‌ (వినయ్‌ ఫోర్ట్‌), అంజలి (జరీన్‌ షిబాబ్‌), హరి (కళాభవన్‌ షాజాన్‌)లు కీలక పాత్రధారులు. ముఖ్యంగా సినిమా నటుడు అయిన హరికి ఈ నాటకంలో కాస్త అధిక ప్రాధాన్యం ఉంటుంది. అయితే, ఇది వినయ్‌కు నచ్చదు. ఒకరోజు ఈ బృందం వేసిన నాటకానికి ముగ్ధులైన ఓ విదేశీ జంట తమ రిసార్ట్‌లో వాళ్లకు ఆతిథ్యం ఇస్తుంది. అందరూ మద్యం పార్టీలో మునిగి తేలుతారు. బాగా పొద్దుపోయాక, ఎవరికి కేటాయించిన గదుల్లోకి వాళ్లు వెళ్లి నిద్రపోతారు. అంజలి కిటికీ పక్కన నిద్ర పోతుంది. అర్ధరాత్రి సమయంలో ఒక వ్యక్తి అంజలి నిద్రపోతున్న కిటికీ పక్కకు వచ్చి అందులోనుంచి చేయి పెట్టి ఆమెతో అసభ్యంగా ప్రవర్తించి పారిపోతాడు. ఈ 12 మందిలో ఆమెతో అలా తప్పుగా వ్యవహరించిన వ్యక్తి ఎవరు? అంజలి ఈ విషయాన్ని ఎలా బయటపెట్టింది? చివరకు ఆ చెత్త పని చేసిన వ్యక్తిని గుర్తించారా? తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే!

ఎలా ఉందంటే: మానవ జీవితం ఒక వైకుంఠపాళి. కోరికలు, అవసరాలు, ఆశలు అనే నిచ్చెనలను ఎక్కేందుకు ప్రతీ జీవి తహతహలాడిపోతుంది. ‘కాల’ సర్పాలు ఎదురైతే వాటి నుంచి తప్పించుకునేందుకు ఎదుటి వ్యక్తిని బలి పశువును చేయడమే ఎక్కువమందికి తెలుసు. ఈ క్రమంలో పరిస్థితులను బట్టి వ్యక్తులకు ఇచ్చే గౌరవం, విలువలు మారిపోతాయి. ‘బాగున్నప్పుడు లెక్కలు మాట్లాడి.. కష్టాల్లో ఉన్నప్పుడు విలువలు మాట్లాడే’ వారే ఎక్కువ. అందుకు దృశ్య రూపమే ‘ఆట్టం’. అంజలితో సహా 12మంది నాటకం వేసేందుకు సిద్ధమవుతున్న సన్నివేశంతో సినిమాను ప్రారంభించిన దర్శకుడు అసలు పాయింట్‌కు రావడానికి కాస్త సమయం తీసుకున్నాడు. విదేశీ జంట వీళ్లందరినీ ఆతిథ్యానికి ఆహ్వానించడం, సరదాగా గడపటం ఇలా కథాగమనం నెమ్మదిగా సాగుతుంది. 12మందిలో ఒక వ్యక్తి అంజలితో అసభ్యంగా ప్రవర్తించాడన్న విషయం తెలియడంతో అసలు కథ పట్టాలెక్కుతుంది. ఆ చెత్త పని చేసిన వ్యక్తి ఎవరో తెలుసుకునేందుకు అందరూ సహ నటుడు అయిన మదన్‌ ఇంటికి వెళ్లడం, ఈ చర్యకు సినిమా నటుడైన హరిని బాధ్యుడిని చేసే క్రమంలో అతడిని ఒక్కొక్కరూ ఒక్కోలా మాట్లాడే తీరును దర్శకుడు నేటి వాస్తవ పరిస్థితులకు అన్వయిస్తూ తీర్చిదిద్దిన విధానం బాగుంది. ఒక వ్యక్తి మనకు నచ్చకపోతే, అతడు ఏం చేసినా మంచిగా కనిపించదు. సగటు మానవ స్వభావమే ఇలా ఉంటుందని చూపించిన తీరు ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.

నాటక బృందం నుంచి హరిని బయటకు పంపేందుకు తీర్మానం చేసే క్రమంలో పలువురి వ్యవహారశైలి భిన్నంగా ఉండటంతో వారిపైనా ప్రేక్షకుడికి అనుమానం కలిగేలా ఆసక్తిగా కథనాన్ని నడిపాడు దర్శకుడు. కథ ముందుకు నడిచే కొద్దీ, ఎవరు ఆ పని చేశారో ఊహించడం మరింత కష్టమైపోతుంటుంది. ఇక్కడే ఊహించని ట్విస్ట్‌ ఇచ్చాడు దర్శకుడు. అనుకోకుండా మదన్‌ ఇంటికి హరి రావడం, తనకున్న పరిచయాలతో నాటక బృందాన్ని ఇంగ్లాండ్‌ తీసుకెళ్తానని చెప్పడంతో అప్పటివరకూ దుర్మార్గుడిగా కనిపించిన అతడు అందరికీ మంచివాడిలా కనిపిస్తాడు. ఆ బృందంలోని ప్రతీ మనిషిలోనూ విదేశాలకు వెళ్లాలన్న ఆశ పుడుతుంది. అంజలిని పిలిచి సయోధ్య కుదిర్చేందుకు యత్నించే ప్రయత్నాలు చూస్తే మనుషుల్లో ఉండే నిలకడలేనితనం తేటతెల్లం అవుతుంది. అంజలి వచ్చిన తర్వాత తప్పెవరిది అని కనుక్కొనే ప్రయత్నంలో ప్రతిఒక్కరూ ఎదుటి వ్యక్తి తప్పులను ఎంచేందుకు ప్రయత్నిస్తాడు తప్ప, అసలు అంజలి పడిన వేదనను ఎవరూ అర్థం చేసుకోరు. పైగా పార్టీలో మద్యం తాగినందుకు అంజలిది కూడా తప్పేనని తీర్మానించడం మానవ నైజానికి పరాకాష్ట. క్లైమాక్స్‌లో మరొక ట్విస్ట్‌తో ముగించిన తీరు బాగుంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: ‘ఆట్టం’లో ఒక్కరు కూడా మనకు తెలిసిన నటులు కాదు. కానీ, ఆ పాత్రల్లో వాళ్లను తప్ప వేరొకరిని ఊహించుకోలేం. ప్రతిఒక్కరూ జీవించారు. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా బాగుంది. చాలా సన్నివేశాలను సహజత్వానికి దగ్గరగా తీశారు. చాలా చిన్న కాన్సెప్ట్‌ను ఎంచుకుని మనిషి నైజాన్ని దర్శకుడు ఆవిష్కరించిన తీరు బాగుంది. కానీ, అసలు పాయింట్‌కు రావడానికి కాస్త సమయం తీసుకోవడం, కథాగమనం కాస్త నెమ్మదిగా సాగడం మినహాయిస్తే చివరి వరకూ ఆసక్తిగా మూవీని నడిపించడంలో దర్శకుడు విజయం సాధించాడు. కుటుంబంతో కలిసి చూడొచ్చా: ప్రస్తుతం అమెజాన్‌ ప్రైమ్‌లో కేవలం మలయాళ భాషలో, ఇంగ్లీష్ సబ్‌టైటిల్స్‌తో ఈ మూవీ అందుబాటులో ఉంది. ఎలాంటి అభ్యంతరకర సన్నివేశాలూ లేవు.
