How to Write a Research Proposal in the APA Style

The sixth edition of the “Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association” directs you how to format and structure your research proposal. This is the most common style used for proposal related to the social sciences. A research proposal in APA format should include a title, abstract, main body and references.

General Structure

APA format recommends that you type your proposal with a highly legible 12-point font, such as Times New Roman. It needs to be double-spaced. When you write a new paragraph, indent fives spaces or use the Tab key. Your paper should have a 1-inch margin on all sides. At the top of each page, insert a running head in the header. To format this correctly, write the title of your proposal in the upper left hand side and the page number in the upper right hand side. Your running head is limited to 50 characters, including spaces. If you must shorten your title, select the keywords.

For your research proposal, your title page should include your paper’s title, your name and your university’s name. Other information that may appear on the title page includes submission date, budget period, total funds requested or advisor’s name, depending on your proposal’s audience. APA style recommends that your title is no more than 12 words in length. All text on this page should be double-spaced. When listing names, do not include any titles or degrees. The running head is different on the title page than the rest of your paper. Format your running head so it says “Running head” followed by a colon and your title.

In APA format, your abstract is the second page of your paper. Despite appearing at the beginning of your paper, plan to write your research proposal last. This is a brief summary of your entire paper. In a 150- to 250-word paragraph, state your problem, and propose a solution for it. To properly format this page, center the word “Abstract” without any additional formatting on the first line of the page. Following a double-space, write your paragraph. Do not indent this paragraph. After your summary, indent five spaces and write the word, “Keywords” in italics followed by a colon. Then list keywords related to your proposal.

In-Text Citations

Every sentence that references another person’s work must include an in-text citation. The APA recommends that you use the author-date method. Write the author’s name and the publication year within parentheses at the end of the referencing sentence. For example, “One study found that the most important element in comprehending non-native speech is familiarity with the topic (Gass & Varonis, 1984).”

At the end of your proposal, APA style advises that you create a references page that lists citations for all of your references. Label this page with the word “References” centered on the first line of the page. Then list all the sources used within your proposal in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. For any references that are longer than one line, indent all subsequent lines by five spaces.

When writing references, APA style recommends that you give the author’s last name and then use initials for all other names. For a single author book, write the author’s last name, a comma, first initial and a period. Next, write the publication year in parentheses. Place a period outside the last parenthesis. Then write the title of the book in italics and sentence case, a period, the city, a comma, the state, a colon, the publisher’s name and a period. A reference may look like this:

Apa Research Proposal Template: A Comprehensive Guide + Free Template Download + How to Write it

Creating an effective apa research proposal.

As a researcher, one of the most important steps in the research process is creating a well-structured and comprehensive research proposal . The APA research proposal template provides a standardized format for creating a research proposal in the social and behavioral sciences. It is important to follow this template as it helps ensure that your proposal meets the specific criteria and requirements set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA). In this article, I will outline the key components of an APA research proposal template and explain why it is different from a standard research proposal .

APA Research Proposal Template

Introduction, problem statement, purpose of study, significance of study, research questions, literature review, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, empirical review, research methodology, research design, data collection, data analysis, ethical considerations, limitations, implications, title: the effects of social media on mental health among adolescents.

Social media usage among adolescents has drastically increased in recent years, raising concerns about its potential impact on mental health.

The excessive use of social media has been linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among the adolescent population.

This research aims to investigate the relationship between social media usage and mental health among adolescents, with the goal of identifying potential interventions to mitigate any negative effects.

Understanding how social media affects the mental health of adolescents is crucial for developing strategies to promote healthy technology use and improve overall well-being.

 • What is the correlation between social media usage and mental health issues among adolescents?
 • How does the content consumed on social media platforms impact the mental health of adolescents?
 • What interventions can be implemented to promote positive social media usage among adolescents?

Drawing from social cognitive theory and the concept of social comparison, this study will explore how adolescents’ interactions on social media influence their self-perception and mental well-being.

The conceptual framework will encompass the various ways in which social media can impact adolescents’ mental health, taking into account factors such as cyberbullying, FOMO (fear of missing out), and social validation.

Previous research has found mixed results regarding the relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes, with some studies identifying a negative impact while others have found no significant correlation.

This study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys to measure social media usage and mental health outcomes, with qualitative interviews to gain deeper insight into adolescents’ experiences.

Data will be collected through self-reported surveys administered to a sample of adolescents, as well as semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative data on their social media habits and mental well-being.

Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify correlations between social media usage and mental health, while qualitative data will be thematically analyzed to identify key themes and patterns.

Informed consent will be obtained from all participants, and measures will be taken to ensure the confidentiality and anonymity of their responses. Additionally, ethical guidelines for research involving minors will be strictly adhered to.

This study is limited by the reliance on self-reported data, which may be subject to biases and inaccuracies. Additionally, the cross-sectional nature of the research may limit causal inferences.

The findings of this research will have implications for the development of interventions aimed at promoting positive social media use and supporting the mental health of adolescents in the digital age.

All references in this proposal will be formatted in APA style to ensure proper citation and adherence to academic standards.

My advice on using this template is to ensure that each section is tailored to the specific research topic and objectives. For example, the literature review should focus on existing research relevant to the study, while the research methodology should outline the specific methods and tools to be used. By customizing each section to suit your proposal, you can enhance the clarity and coherence of your research plan . Additionally, make sure to keep the language clear and concise to effectively communicate the significance and feasibility of your proposed study.

How to Write a Research Proposal in APA Format?

What is APA format in research?

The American Psychological Association (APA) style is one of the citation formats in research with a set of norms for writing in psychology and related subjects. These standards were outlined in the American Psychological Association’s Publication Manual (APA, 2006). In 1944, the American Psychological Association produced its first version of the Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association, which included its writing style and structure for academic papers. The handbook has undergone six revisions, with the sixth and most recent editions issued in 2009. The APA style refers to the principles established by the American Psychological Association in their manual to provide a standard for journals and scholarly works. APA Referencing guide was developed to improve the precise interpretation of academic and  research papers  published in their journals by minimizing linguistic bias and using clear language. Since then, several colleges and scientific publications have accepted Academic Writing in APA Style .

APA-Format

Introduction:

A research proposal dissertation describes what you aim to investigate, why it is important, and how you propose to carry out your study. The structure of a research proposal varies depending on the subject. Most proposals, however, will include at least the following elements based on Research proposal service guidelines:

 • Introduction
 • Literature review
 • Research design
 • Reference list

While the components may differ, the general goal remains the same. A research proposal for dissertation acts as a blueprint and roadmap for your research strategy, assisting you in becoming organized and confident in the direction you want to go.

APA Style and the Values of Psychology

According to Robert Madigan and his colleagues,  APA-style papers  serve an important role that is often overlooked. It specifically supports the scientific values and assumptions of psychologists. Many APA style aspects that appear random at first glance make perfect sense in this context. The following are some characteristics of APA-style writing and the scientific values or assumptions they reflect.

The APA style research proposal will allow you to create a proposal with a consistent style that will persuade the committee to authorize your research. Specific standards are provided in the APA Referencing guide for research proposals. Below is the research proposal format APA 7th edition guidelines.

APA Format

 • Margins, Header & Footer

All sides must have a 1-inch margin. The header format is right justified, with the proposal title on the left and the page number on the right. The running header should not be more than 50 characters long; it should begin on the cover page and continue throughout the proposal. If the title is more than 50 characters, reduce it to include the keywords.

 • Fonts, Size & Space

APA style  calls for a serif typeface, ideally Times New Roman. The fond is standard 12 size. Each word must be double-spaced, with a five -space indentation.

The proposal headline will be positioned in the centre, halfway down the page, in the proper format for your title page. The headline is followed by your name and the name of the organization or university.

The abstract appears after the title page. Write the abstract in 250 words or less, and include a statement about the study and methodologies that will be employed.

The introduction is on the next page of the proposal; it comprises the main concept behind the research, the setting of the study, the issue that it will address, and the individuals who will benefit. The section can be up to three pages long.

 • Literature Review

Following the introduction is a brief  review of the literature  you will need to study to gain a thorough understanding of the problem; you must relate the research to similar studies in the field and incorporate a structure that will be followed in the survey about existing knowledge in the area. The section might be as long as 7 pages.

 • Research Methodology

List and briefly explain  Research methodologies  you will use in the research; include everything from data collection to analysis and how each will be justified. According to the criteria, APA research methodology can only have a maximum of 5 pages.

 • Limitations

It is necessary to describe the study’s potential limitations; keep this to half a page.

 • Significance

Limitations are followed by the significance of the research, its tangibility, practicability, and ramifications. The proposal must explain the likely result and what it hopes to achieve in research. The part is typically two pages long.

 • References, Bibliography & Citation

Include a section for every reference used in the proposal’s authoring. The APA proposal format must have; the author and year must be mentioned when quoting or paraphrasing; and there is no bibliography section in APA format.

Do check for Research Proposal examples , to know the research proposal template and sample research proposal APA 7th edition format and also how a well-structured proposal are written by our expertise in various domain.

Conclusion

APA style should be viewed as a “genre” of writing that is ideal for presenting psychological research findings, particularly in academic and professional settings. It does not imply “excellent writing” in general. You would not write a literary analysis in APA style for an English class, even if it were based on psychoanalytic notions. Instead, you would write it in Modern Language Association MLA & Vancouver format . And you would not write a newspaper piece in APA style, even if it was about a great advance in behavioural neuroscience.

APA Question

APA does not have a specific format for research proposal papers or outlines. For some recommendations on how to incorporate APA style into research proposals or outlines, go to http://rasmussen.libanswers.com/faq/32563 . Remember to follow all APA rules of formatting by viewing the library's APA research guide at https://guides.westcoastuniversity.edu/apa .

In general, a research paper proposal should be 1 or 2 paragraphs summarizing what your paper is going to be about, why it is important to your profession, who it affects, the effect on society or a community, and what is being done about it.

Cover these same main topic areas when writing an outline. For examples of how to format an outline, go to http://rasmussen.libanswers.com/faq/32339 .

Detailed Guide: APA Research Proposal Example

Table of Contents

As a college student, essay assignments are the norm. But a research proposal may sound strange– especially if you are a newbie. If that’s the case, an APA research proposal example comes in handy.

In this article, we’ll examine the features of a research proposal. And provide all the information you need to write your first.

What Is A Research Proposal?

A research proposal is a document that outlines the main idea of a research project . The proposal explains why the study needs to be done and how it will benefit society or improve knowledge in the field.

It delineates the methodology of the research you’ve conducted or are about to execute.

What’s The Goal Of A Research Proposal?

A research proposal helps the writer explore a topic in greater detail. It provides an opportunity to identify and analyze relevant evidence, conclude, and offer potential solutions or recommendations.

A research proposal also allows you to demonstrate knowledge of a specific field and create a well-rounded argument considering diverse perspectives.

Sometimes, the purpose of a proposal is to secure funds to support your research.

A research proposal presents a unique insight into a particular subject matter. And make a compelling case for its importance in advancing knowledge.

You should be able to prove that your work will:

 • Fill a knowledge gap on this topic or add to the existing knowledge on the subject
 • Emphasize existing information on the issue

It should also prove that you are capable of contributing meaningfully to the field of study. The best way to prove this is by stating your credentials and academic qualifications. Your study proposal also affirms the academic merit of your ideas.

How Long Should A Proposal Be?

Frankly, the page count of a research proposal isn’t as important as the content it should entail. A master’s or bachelor’s research proposal may be a few pages long. But for a Ph.D. dissertation, it may be more as the research is often meatier.

Person writing on brown wooden table near white ceramic mug

The purpose of a research proposal is to outline any content or element of your research. Don’t leave out details because you are targeting a word or page count.

The Structure Of A Research Proposal

An APA Research Proposal structure isn’t set in stone. But some elements are critical. They are as follows:

Research Paper Title

The research title should embody your paper’s content. While you can still change your title during the project, you must ensure your title explains the whole study in a few words.

In just about 100 words, your abstract should state the question you intend to answer.

Background Significance

This is where you’ll give a background introduction to your topic. It covers issues like why you decided to work on the research, existing debates, etc.

You should also include the relevance of the question you aim to answer and its importance.

Finally, you must state the tool you plan to use while conducting your research.

Literature Review

The literature review lists the sources you plan to rely on for your research and why you are working with those sources.

Research Methods, Design And Schedule

This aspect of your research proposal covers the following topics.

 • Identify if you are doing corrective, experimental, or descriptive research.
 • State the kind of research you want to do. Is it quantitative or qualitative research?
 • What tools will you use to curate data? Observation? Or will you conduct a survey?
 • List all the data collection options available and why they are necessary.

In addition, this aspect of the research proposal should also indicate:

 • Research budget
 • Any form of potential obstacles and how you will resolve them.
 • The timeline of your research

Conclusions

Like the name suggests, this section wraps up the research proposal. It summarizes research proposals and restates your purpose.

Bibliography

Finally, list your sources or the works that contributed to your research. In this case, you need to follow the APA format. You can even annotate your bibliography, indicating how each source will contribute to your study.

APA Research Proposal Format

Now, we’ll briefly analyze what the APA format should look like.

 • 1-inch margins
 • 12-point font Times New Roman
 • An APA running head (limited to 50 characters)
 • Double-spaced
 • References page (following APA guidelines)
 • In-text citations (formatted accordingly to APA guidelines)
 • A title page containing your research title (12 words maximum), your name, and your institution name
 • Abstract (150-200 words)

What To Avoid In APA Research Paper

Some factors can mar your research proposals. APA research papers should be written carefully, avoiding the following mistakes:

1. Using overly technical language that can make it difficult for the reader to understand.

2. Omitting any necessary facts or data may weaken the paper’s credibility and validity.

3. Failing to cite sources accurately could result in plagiarism.

4. Making assumptions without providing evidence to back them up.

5. Overlooking potential ethical issues related to a topic.

6. Ignoring grammar and spelling mistakes.

7. Not organizing ideas logically or presenting them in an unclear manner.

8. Relying too heavily on one source of information when multiple perspectives are needed.

9. Being overly opinionated instead of using objective analysis and reasoning.

APA Research Proposal Example

Emotional well-being and mental health research proposal , introduction.

I propose undertaking a research project into the effects of emotional well-being on mental health. This study investigates how emotional well-being affects one’s ability to cope with and manage mental health. This proposal will analyze current literature, examine personal experiences, and explore various theories. It seeks to gain an understanding of how emotional well-being influences mental health.

Research Methodology

In terms of methodology, I plan to conduct both qualitative and quantitative research. Using these mediums, I will form conclusions regarding the correlation between emotional well-being and mental health.

A survey will be administered online, followed by semi-structured interviews with participants who indicate that they are struggling with their mental health. Furthermore, I will conduct interviews with healthcare professionals.

Personal stories and observations from my experience working with individuals with mental illness will also be incorporated into the data collection process. Additionally, information from relevant academic studies on this topic will be used to inform the interpretation of the results.

The proposed research has theoretical and practical implications for understanding the complex relationship between emotion and mental health.

Theoretically, it could lead to a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying this relationship. It could also provide insight into the psychological underpinnings of mental illnesses like anxiety or depression.

Moreover, the findings could suggest new strategies for helping those with poor mental health. It will provide them with improved access to support systems and resources. Finally, further exploration of this issue could result in policies geared towards improving emotional well-being implemented at governmental levels.

I anticipate that this study will take approximately 6 months to complete, depending on the availability of interview subjects.

If allowed to conduct this research, I am confident I can produce valid and reliable results. One that will contribute to our collective knowledge about the role of emotion in mental health.

Note: This is a skeletal APA research proposal example. This should only serve as a guide. You need to be as detailed as possible while writing yours.

An APA research proposal example is a document that outlines the basic idea of a researcher’s project.

When writing a research proposal using the APA style, it’s essential to follow the formatting rules the American Psychological Association laid out. This includes providing references in the correct format, such as author name, date, and page number.

How To Writing A Research Proposal In APA Style?

Profile image of Tutors India

2019, Tutors India

American Psychological Association published their writing style and format for academic writings in their first edition of Publication manual for American Psychological Association in 1944. The manual has since spanned six editions, with the sixth and latest version published in 2009. The APA style refers to the guidelines set by APA in their manual to guide a standard for journals and scientific papers. The style guide was created to enhance precise understanding of academic and scientific articles published in their journals by avoiding bias in language with an emphasis on the usage of unambiguous language. Various universities and scientific journals have since adopted the APA style as the standard for academic writing, sometimes with a little or little modifications. A research proposal is the first step in most academic writing. It is the estimate of aggregation of processes that will form research. Research proposal in APA guidelines will enable you to present a proposal that will have a standard style to convince the committee to approve of your research. APA style for research proposal contains specific guidelines.

Meta-analysis is the statistical analysis and integration of multiple studies with similar concepts. The basic principle of meta-analysis is the presence of a common truth behind all conceptually similar studies which has been measured with a certain degree of error within each study. Therefore, the objective of meta-analysis will be to arrive at a pooled estimate closest to the common truth using the principles of statistics. Quantitative research deals with numbers and stats, the integration of such researches with similar concepts in order to improve statistical power of estimation is called meta-analysis. Meta-analysis will result in a weighted average that is a close estimate to the true value accounting in various factors. The difference lies in how the weights are allocated and the manner in which uncertainty is compared around the point estimate generated. Meta-analysis, in short, provides the point estimate of the unknown common truth.

BackgroundSince 2004, the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccines in Latin America and the Caribbean has markedly increased. However, vaccine effectiveness (VE) is not routinely measured in the region. We assessed the feasibility of using routine surveillance data collected by sentinel hospitals to estimate influenza VE during 2012 against laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalizations in Costa-Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. We explored the completeness of variables needed for VE estimation.MethodsWe conducted the pilot case–control study at 23 severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) surveillance hospitals. Participant inclusion criteria included children 6 months–11 years and adults ≥60 years targeted for vaccination and hospitalized for SARI during January–December 2012. We abstracted information needed to estimate target group specific VE (i.e., date of illness onset and specimen collection, preexisting medical conditions, 2012 and 2011 vaccination status and date, and pneumococcal vaccination status for children and adults) from SARI case-reports and for children ≤9 years, inquired about the number of annual vaccine doses given. A case was defined as an influenza virus positive by RT-PCR in a person with SARI, while controls were RT-PCR negative. We recruited 3 controls per case from the same age group and month of onset of symptoms.ResultsWe identified 1,186 SARI case-patients (342 influenza cases; 849 influenza-negative controls), of which 994 (84 %) had all the information on key variables sought. In 893 (75 %) SARI case-patients, the vaccination status field was missing in the SARI case-report forms and had to be completed using national vaccination registers (36 %), vaccination cards (30 %), or other sources (34 %). After applying exclusion criteria for VE analyses, 541 (46 %) SARI case-patients with variables necessary for the group-specific VE analyses were selected (87 cases, 236 controls among children; 64 cases, 154 controls among older adults) and were insufficient to provide precise regional estimates (39 % for children and 25 % for adults of minimum sample size needed).ConclusionsSentinel surveillance networks in middle income countries, such as some Latin American and Caribbean countries, could provide a simple and timely platform to estimate regional influenza VE annually provided SARI forms collect all necessary information.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12889-015-2001-1) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

SUMMARY Virtual surgical planning technology in head and neck surgery is witnessing strong growth. In the literature, the validity of the method from the point of view of accuracy and clinical utility has been widely documented, especially for bone modelling. To date, however, with its increased use in head and neck oncology, and consequently the increased need for bone and soft tissue reconstruction, is important to carry out the virtual programme considering not only bone reconstruction but also all aspects related to the reconstruction of soft tissue using composite flaps. We describe our approach to virtual planning in the case of composite flaps. The study reports six consecutive patients with malignant disease requiring mandibular bone and soft tissue reconstruction using fibular osteocutaneous flaps. In all six patients, the resection and reconstruction were planned virtually focusing on the position of cutaneous perforator vessels in order to schedule fibula cutting guides. ...

Demodecidose is induced by Demodex folliculorum. This parasit can induced various clinical pictures as folliculitis; blepharitis, rosaciformes dermatosis. The diagnosis was made by the presence of the parasit on direct examination of skin prelevement. Cyclines seems to be an interesting alternative to acaricides in the treatment of demodecidosis.

AGNETIC resonance imaging (MRI) provides an excellent modality for distinguishing different tissues in the human body, which is essential for medical applications. When MRI is used for stereotactic treatment planning, its geometric accuracy is crucial. Previous studies have been conducted to correct the distortion caused by nonlinearity of the MRI scanner’s magnetic gradient fields by imaging a cubic phantom [1], [2] and defining distortion correction functions based on the distorted appearance its surfaces. Correct mathematical handling of the distortion correction function required that the cube was centered about the magnetic isocenter, which is defined as the common center of the three magnetic gradient fields and is not very accurately known. New 3Tesla MRI systems have a larger bore, making the previous phantom design impractically small for probing the field nonlinearity in the periphery of the bore, as the phantom cannot be scaled up due to constraints related to weight and ...

 • Set 1 inch page margins
 • Apply double line spacing

In the header of each page you include the paper title and page number. If your paper title is longer than 50 characters you should use a shortened version as running head. The page number should be positioned in the top right-hand corner. On the title page the APA running head is preceded by the words “Running head:”.

APA running head example title page

Throughout your paper you use different heading levels. The levels ranging from one to five help structure the document. Major headings, or heading 1, are used for the titles of chapters such as “Methods” or “Results”. Heading levels two to five are used for subheadings. Each heading level is formatted differently. These are the APA heading guidelines :

Title case capitalization : Capitalize the first, last, and principal words. Sentence case capitalization : Capitalize only the first word and any proper nouns.

Note that you are not required to include a table of contents in APA style , but if you do choose to include one, all headings should be formatted as plain text, with an additional indent for each level.

The APA title page , also called cover page, is the first page of your paper. The regular formatting guidelines regarding font and margins apply. In addition, an APA formatted title page contains:

 • Running head including page number
 • Full paper title (in title case)
 • Author name(s), without titles and degrees
 • Institutional affiliation

Note: APA style has specific guidelines for including more than one author or institutional affiliation on the title page .

An APA abstract is a one paragraph (± 250 words) summary of your paper. It introduces the objective or problem statement of the paper and includes information on the method, research results, and conclusions of your research. In a separate article we explain in-depth how to write an abstract .

Although most regular APA formatting guidelines apply, the abstract page also has specific requirements. The abstract starts with a centered heading “Abstract”. In contrast to regular APA headings, no styling is applied. The first line of the paragraph is, unlike regular paragraphs, not indented.

At the end of the abstract, keywords relevant to the research are included. These keywords improve the findability of your paper in databases. Indent the line with keywords and start with the italicized word “Keyword:”, followed by the keywords.

The APA reference page , also called reference list, is where all sources that are cited in the text are listed. The citations differs for each source type. Aside from the references itself the reference page as a whole also has specific APA formatting guidelines.

The APA reference page example below highlights those guidelines regarding page margins, hanging indent and the reference page title “References”. Furthermore, the reference list is sorted alphabetically . You can easily create APA references with Scribbr’s free APA Citation Generator .

APA reference page example

APA reference page format

APA format citations consist of parenthetical citation in the text ( APA 6 in-text citations ) and the full reference in the reference list. For each webpage, journal article, book or any other source specific citation guidelines apply.

To make things easier Scribbr created the free APA Citation Generator that cites every source perfectly. Just enter the URL, journal DOI or book ISBN and both the in-text citation and full reference are generated.

In addition, Scribbr has in-depth APA citation examples for every source type ranging from journal articles and books to YouTube videos and tweets .
