Doctoral Studies in Language and Culture

The research environment Language and Culture is a meeting place for linguistic and literary research, which is unified by an interest in the interplay between language and culture in everyday, literary, medial, artistic and professional contexts.

Our research deals with anything from everyday conversations and multimodal interaction to literary texts and reading cultures.

The doctoral programme in language and culture is multi- and interdisciplinary. It takes its point of departure from three main perspectives: i) literary studies, ii) linguistics and interaction analysis and iii) cultural analysis.

About the programme

The programme comprises 75 ECTs of courses and a doctoral dissertation of 165 ECTs.

The courses make up two blocks

  • Compulsory foundation courses amounting to 30 ECTs, which everyone studies
  • Elective courses amounting to 45 ECTs, which are different according to the student’s specialisation

There are four foundation courses, each 7.5 ECTs

  • The Philosophy of Science: Linguistics and Literature (LiLi), an introduction to methodology and the philosophy of science within language and literary subjects
  • Analysing Literature
  • Analysing Language and Interaction
  • Analysing Culture and Media

Please note that we are in the process of revising our selection of foundation courses in consultation with our doctoral students.

The following are an integral part of writing a dissertation

  • During the first term, doctoral students present their research project outline at a research seminar.
  • In the second term, doctoral students write a research plan and present it at another research seminar.
  • At later stages of the dissertation-writing process, doctoral students present their work at a higher seminar and at least two refereed conferences.
  • Doctoral students defend a preliminary version of their dissertation at a halfway seminar with an external commentator and two additional reviewers.
  • About half a year or more before the final defence, doctoral students defend the penultimate version of their dissertation at a final seminar. This version is discussed by an external commentator, two additional reviewers and fellow PhD students.
  • Finally, doctoral students defend their dissertation at a public defence, where it is reviewed by an external opponent appointed by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and assessed (a pass or fail) by an examination board consisting of three external experts in the field.
  • The dissertation is printed in the series Studies in Language and Culture and published electronically by Linköping University Electronic Press.

The current general syllabus is available (in Swedish) under the heading “Allmän studieplan” (general syllabus) in the Swedish version of this webpage.

If you are interested in applying for a position as PhD student at the English Unit, please note that we advertise for these positions once a year , normally in January or February. Applications cannot be considered outside the official application period.

The English Unit currently offers PhD education (third-cycle education) in two separate research subjects: English language and linguistics, and English literature. Before submitting an application for a PhD position in either of these fields, please review the websites for both the English Unit and the Centre for Languages and Literature . You should also read through the general information about PhD education provided by the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology .

English language and linguistics

The admissions requirements are listed on pages 3-4 in the General Syllabus. Applicants who hold a BA degree will normally meet the general admissions requirements. To be able to meet even the specific admissions requirements, applicants will need to hold an MA degree in English language and linguistics , or in a subject that is directly relevant for English language and linguistics . This means that applicants will need to have a strong background in not only the English language but also in various core fields of linguistics, such as morphology, lexis, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics.

Applicants must have excellent spoken and written proficiency in English. The knowledge of English must be documented by an international standardized proficiency test that is normally no more than two years old. The following tests are accepted:

  • IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 7.5 and no module normally under 7
  • TOEFL iBT test / TOEFL iBT Home Edition / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition, with a minimum overall score of 102 and scores for the respective four skills at least in the ranges corresponding to “Advanced”: reading 24-30; listening 22-30; speaking 25-30; writing 24-30
  • Pearson PTE Academic / Pearson PTE Academic Online, with a minimum score of 76 (within the range of 76-84)
  • Cambridge English Qualifications, level C2 (a minimum score of 200)

Applicants whose first language is English and who possess a high-school diploma or an Upper Secondary School Leaving Examination diploma from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand are exempted from the above requirement. A copy of the diploma must be submitted with the application.

Please note that all other applicants must submit a standardized proficiency test result.

The applications must include:

  • A CV that lists all previous academic degrees. The CV should also provide information about other relevant qualifications.
  • A list of publications (if this information is not already provided in the CV).
  • Records of the first- and second-cycle studies (i.e., of BA and MA studies). Provide attested copies of official transcripts of records and of all the degree certificates. If these are written in other languages than English or the Scandinavian languages, provide attested translated copies of the original documents.
  • Copies of first- and second-cycle theses/degree projects (i.e., the BA and MA theses). If these are written in other languages than English or the Scandinavian languages, provide translated copies of these works.
  • Copies of possible scholarly articles, reports, or papers that are of relevance. These should also be listed in the CV or the list of publications, and it must be clear what type of work they exemplify (e.g., published articles or course papers).
  • A project proposal for the PhD thesis work. The proposal should outline the planned thesis topic and field and indicate what theories and methods will be used. It must also motivate how the planned project is relevant for the subject of English language and linguistics. The project proposal can be max. 1500 words in length, excluding references.
  • A copy of the English language proficiency test score report.

Please note that you need to upload all documents with your application as pdf-files. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

All the documents must be uploaded in the university’s official recruitment system Varbi.

English literature

The specific and procedural requirements for application for doctoral study in English literature are outlined in the General Syllabus and in the advertisement text published each year.

  • Records of first- and second-cycle degrees (i.e., BA, MA , etc.). Please provide attested copies of official transcripts of records and of all the degree certificates. If these are written in languages other than English or the Scandinavian languages, please provide attested translated copies of the original documents.
  • First- and second-cycle theses/degree projects
  • A list of other relevant educational qualifications and administrative experience
  • Where applicable, scholarly journal articles, reports, or papers of relevance to the subject

  • Topics in Deep Machine Learning (reading course)

Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Natural Language Processing (CSoc)

Machine Learning Methods For Vision and Language (ML-V&L)

PhD in Computational Linguistics

The course concentrates on the use of constructive type theories to the study of natural language semantics. It presents an alternative language to be used in representing the semantics of NL based on the notion of proof, rather than the notion of truth with respect to a model as standard in classic Montague Semantics.

The course gives in-depth knowledge about theories and methods for the design, implementation and evaluation of dialogue systems by focusing especially on:

  • Semantics and pragmatics for dialogue systems
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Advanced dialogue management
  • Multimodality
  • Evaluation of dialogue systems
  • Advanced implementation techniques

This is a PhD course that explores computational modelling of language and vision in particular in relation to situated dialogue agents and image classification. There is a parallel course at the master’s level which this course may partially overlap with: LT2308 ESLP: Embodied and Situated Language Processing or LT2318: Artificial Intelligence: Cognitive Systems.

The course gives a survey of theory and practical computational implementations of how natural language interacts with the physical world through action and perception. We will look at topics such as semantic theories and computational approaches to modelling natural language, action and perception (grounding), situated dialogue systems, integrated robotic systems, grounding of language in action and perception, generation and interpretation of scene descriptions from images and videos, spatial cognition, and others.

As the course studies how humans structure and interact with the physical world and express it in language, it bridges into the domains of cognitive science, computer vision, robotics and therefore more broadly belongs to the field of cognitive artificial intelligence. Typical applications of computational models of language, action, and perception are image search and retrieval on the web, navigation systems that provide more natural, human-like instructions, and personal robots and situated conversational agents that interact with us in our home environment through language.

The learning outcomes of the course are based on covering 3 topics: (i) the relation between language and perception in human interaction, (ii) how language and perception is modelled with formal and computational models and methods and how these are integrated with different applications, and (iii) how research in the field is communicated scientifically.

linguistics phd sweden

The course gives a survey of theory and computational implementations of representing and reasoning with meaning in natural languages from cognitive, linguistic and computational perspective. We will look at formal theories and computational implementations to model-theoretic semantics (lambda calculus), situated and grounded representations of meaning, semantic grammars (CCG, dependency grammar), distributional representations of lexical meaning and its compositional extensions, approaches to unsupervised machine learning of linguistic representations, and others. An emphasis of the course will be (i) on the nature of representations, (ii) how they satisfy the notion of compositionality, (iii) how they are used in inference or reasoning and (iv) what natural language processing applications are they useful for.

Topics in Advanced Deep Machine Learning

This course comes into an introductory as well as an advanced version. It is a reading course.

Course content for the introductory version: An introduction to the basic concepts of deep machine learning as applied to problems in natural language processing.

Course content for the advanced version: Advanced applications of deep machine learning as applied to problems in natural language processing and artificial intelligence.

Type Theory with Records: From Perception to Communication

The course introduces TTR, a Type Theory with Records, as a framework for natural language grammar and interaction. We follow Cooper (in preparation) in taking a dialogical view of semantics. The course covers the formal foundations of TTR as well as TTR accounts of perception, intensionality, information exchange, grammar (syntax and semantics), quantification, modality and other linguistic phenomena. It also covers the relation between TTR and other type theories for natural language semantics, as well as recent extensions and applications of TTR.

The course overviews basic concepts and theories in sociolinguistics and bilingualism. It examines their implications for computational approaches to language in respect to the collection and processing of corpora of speech, writing or social media displaying sociolinguistic variation and/or code- switching, borrowing and similar phenomena of multilingual communities.

The course focuses on machine learning/deep learning models and techniques such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Long-Short Term Memory Networks (LSTMs), Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets), Neural Auto-Encoders, Memory Networks, and others applied to computational modeling of natural language and images, and other sensory information.

Theoretically, it examines how machine learning approaches address topics such as multi-modal grounded representations of meaning, representing and resolving semantic ambiguity, attention and salience, perception and dialogue interaction, natural language interpretation, natural language generation, natural language reasoning and inference, and collection of perceptual and linguistic data.

Practically, the course overviews contemporary computer vision and natural language processing tasks such as generating image and video descriptions, visual question answering, image retrieval using text queries, aligning images and text in large data collections, image generation from textual descriptions, and others.

PhD programmes

When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.

“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne

So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.

How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.

Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

Linguistics: Semantics and Pragmatics

Course · 7.5 credits

On this page :

Description

The course gives a basic understanding of concepts within the field of semantics and pragmatics. Various traditions are illuminated, both theoretically and through the execution of problem-based exercises. Among these traditions are structural-typological semantics, logical semantics, cognitive semantics, and theories of pragmatic meaning. Central philosophical issues will be discussed: What is meaning? What is the relationship between meaning, world and consciousness? The emphasis is however on linguistic questions such as: Do different languages have different meaning systems? What is the relationship between linguistic meaning and context?

Linguistics

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. Linguists study how languages are structured, the similarities and differences between the languages of the world, and how languages develop, change and disappear. The field also studies how people use language to communicate with each other and how children acquire their mother tongue.

Subject description

The department offers master’s level courses on linguistic theory and methodology, linguistic typology, phonetics, statistics for linguists, field linguistics, corpus linguistics, and child language development. Most of our bachelor’s level courses are offered in Swedish, and thus require documented proficiency in Swedish.

Our Master’s Programme in Language Sciences with a Specialisation in Typology and Linguistic Diversity is a two-year programme conducted in English. This specialisation provides a comprehensive course of study of core areas in Linguistics: linguistic theory and methodology, scientific methods and research ethics, linguistic typology, statistical analysis and corpus linguistics. Optional courses within the area of linguistics are, for example, field linguistics and grammatical theory.

The programme aims at extending and deepening your knowledge in linguistics, as well as at strengthening your grasp of research methodology, research ethics and your ability to carry out scientific reasoning.

Career opportunities

In addition to knowledge about linguistic theory and methodology, studies in Linguistics will help you develop skills such as critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving. Students often combine their studies in Linguistics with studies in Modern Languages, Philosophy, Pedagogy, or Computer Science.

Thus, studies in Linguistics can lead to a wide range of professions, from academic research and teaching to work in the tech industry. Linguistics studies are advantageous in areas such as language teaching, editorial work, translation, development of digital teaching materials, and speech and language technology.

Courses and programmes

For a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics you can choose to study individual courses or join bachelor’s programme listed under Educations above.

A master’s degree in Linguistics can only be obtained through enrolment in one of the programmes listed under Educations within the subject.
