Week 11 Content release

We have released Week 11 contents. This includes the following:

1. Video lectures

2. Tutorial lectures

3. Practice assignment

4. Graded assignment

We request you to kindly follow the following tips to establish an effective teaching-learning process.

Please watch all videos before attempting the assignment questions.

Even though our whole team is always ready to help you, we would strongly recommend that you try to work out all assignment questions on your own so as to develop the skill and speed of problem-solving.

Even though we are providing the solution pdf of practice assignment, please do not go through it until you have attempted all questions on your own to your satisfaction.

Discourse Forums:

Before posting your queries on the forum, please ensure that you have tried to work out the questions at least 3 or 4 times at different points of time and after watching the videos at least twice.

Before posting your queries on the forum, please do a search in the forum to see if your question has been answered before. This will enable us to address diverse questions rather than going over the same question and similar post again and again.

The questions are being tagged/labelled to enable easier search for the students. For instance, if you filter by label activity questions, you will see all queries regarding activity questions which have been tagged in the forum. You can see if your questions have been answered in the forum earlier, before posting your own question.

While posting your query, please post your working also, so that we can give you hints as to why your answer or approach is wrong. This is a better learning process than obtaining the full solution in a single go.

As far as possible, we will release an FAQ document every week on the most frequently asked questions on the forum and/or live sessions. Please go through this document to get answers to the most asked questions.

Welcome to IITM BSc Degree September 2021 Qualifier

Dear Candidate,

A hearty welcome to you from the BSc Degree Project team of IIT Madras!!

Please find below the information and instructions regarding the course content and usage of the portal.

You may access the course portal:  onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in  by using the SAME EMAIL ID you used to register for the qualifier exam.

Once you login, click on the tab "My current courses" and the links to the 4 courses will be available. Click on a course and access the videos, practice assignments and notes.

Content and Assignments

Every week, about 2 to 3 hours of videos by the course instructor(s) will be released for each of the following courses:

* Mathematics for Data Science I

* Statistics for Data Science I

* Computational Thinking

* English I

Along with the videos, we will also release the following material as is relevant:

* Activity questions for each lecture

* A practice assignment

* A graded assignment (or simply “Assignment”)

* Transcripts of the lectures as PDFs

* Slides used by the instructors as PDFs

* Solution document for the practice assignment

* Solution video explaining the solutions of the practice assignment

* Answers to frequently asked questions of the previous week.

Suggested sequence for studying:

  • Watch the first video lecture.
  • The activity questions are intended to test the basic understanding of the concepts covered in the lecture watched. So attempt this after you watch the lecture. Revisit the video if you do not get some answers correct.
  • Repeat this sequence of video-activity questions for every video lecture given.
  • After watching all videos of a week, you can attempt the practice assignment. The questions in the practice assignment test the understanding of a combination of concepts taught in one or more lectures. As the name indicates, this assignment will give you some practice before attempting the actual graded assignment. Once you attempt the questions, if you are unsure of the answers, please read the solution document or watch the solution video to clarify your doubts.
  • After satisfactorily attempting the practice assignment, you can attempt the graded assignment. The graded assignment has been designed in such a way that it has a balanced distribution of easy, medium and difficult questions. This can be submitted multiple times before the deadline, and the latest submission will be considered for grading. The score will be available only after the due date-time has passed.

Submissions will be possible only until the mentioned time on the due date mentioned.

Submission deadline for graded assignments in qualifier month:

The due date and time will be mentioned in every graded assignment. No exception will be given to this deadline since the whole process of grading is automated. The solution for the graded assignment will be released as a document and a video once the deadline for submission is over. There will be graded assignments for the first 4 weeks.

Average of the best 3 out of the 4 weekly graded assignments >= minimum marks required as per your category to be eligible for getting a hall ticket for the qualifier.

Please do the assignments yourself and even if you take help, ensure that you know how to solve it on your own. These assignments will help you prepare for the quizzes and final exams. Plagiarism and violating the honour code will be taken very seriously, if detected during the submission of assignments.

Perseverance is the key:

Please watch the lectures, follow the courses regularly and submit all assignments well before the due date so that technical issues like bad internet connection or a system problem will not hamper your progress in the course. Your regular participation is vital for learning and excelling in the program. Our course support members will have regular interactions with you via live sessions and discussion forums. Please make use of these sessions to clear your doubts.

Announcements and discussion forums:

The announcement emails from the course instructors and course support members will be sent regarding the lessons, assignments, exam registration, hall tickets etc. Make sure to check your email Inbox everyday so that you do not miss out on important messages. We will also send messages through sms and whatsapp. Please do check these also regularly.

The discussion forums are for everyone to ask questions and interact. Anyone who knows the answers can reply to anyone's post. The course instructor/course support members will also respond to your queries. Please make maximum use of this feature as this will help you learn much better. Also, ensure that you follow basic discussion forum etiquette. Follow the discussion forum closely and read the questions previously asked so that you can refrain from asking the same.

You can write to  [email protected]. in  for any general queries about the programme. All course related technical queries should be asked in the course specific discussion forums.

Qualifier exam:

The syllabus for the qualifier will broadly be the four weeks of content being released from September 6th 2021. The videos will be the primary material of study. The assignments will give you practice and an idea about the pattern of questions for the qualifier. The exact pattern of questions will be explained to you in the days leading to the qualifier. You may also make use of any supplementary material to get more practice and speed for attempting and solving the questions. Regards, IITM BSc Team

Week 1 Content Release

We have released Week 1 contents. This includes the following:

Discussion Forum Etiquette

Dear Learner, Discussion Forum is a place for both learners and course team to interact and clarify the queries related to the course content and logistics. To maintain a clean and supportive environment, it is important that every discussion forum participant strictly maintain an etiquette while posting or responding in the discussion forum . Please read the discussion forum etiquette given below to understand more about appropriate and acceptable use of Online Degree Discussion Forums .

Discussions on Course Content

Limit your discussions to the “Unit(s)/Lesson(s)” that they are related to. Doing so ensures that the discussions are clustered around the most specific content; this also enables easier searching of the various threads being posted.

  • Ask any doubts/questions you may have about the subject (videos or assignments) in the  forum  - make use of the opportunity given.  Do not worry about what others will think of you - asking questions and getting concepts clarified is of prime importance while learning.
  • Sharing of latest trends in the subject area in terms of research or technology is welcome.
  • Avoid directly posting copyrighted material in posts and responses - acknowledge  the source or give a link to the material.
  • If your post extends the course content, please indicate this in the subject line.

If your post is directly related to something in the course content, you may wish to provide more details so that others can find or trace it easily. For example, you may want to cite from a particular video, which diagram/slide, timing details, reading materials etc.

Treat the questions and comments from your fellow learners seriously. Think about the issues they have raised, offer your own thoughts, research and propose your solutions to the problems they have posed. Your experience is also valuable; share freely and widely.

Before you create a new post, review the existing threads to see if there are already similar posts. If a post already exists and has not been answered, please indicate your doubt by either selecting the ‘Me too’ button (for Questions) or Upvote button (for Discussions ).

On Tone and Courtesy in Writing

The "tone" is a very important part of electronic communication. When you read your message out loud, does it sound the way you would speak to another student in the classroom? If no, then please rewrite the post.

Before publishing your comment, make sure that the grammar and spelling of the text to be published are correct. Do not write comments in all capital letters . Use capital letters only where appropriate.

Respect the opinions of your classmates. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectfully and acknowledge the valid points in your classmate’s argument. Acknowledge that others are entitled to have their own perspective on the issue. This will help both you and your peer to grow intellectually.

Refrain from inappropriate language and derogatory or personal attacks in the course forum .

Humor can be difficult to convey in text, so make sure everyone realizes when you are trying to be funny. It is easy for messages to be misinterpreted since there are no physical gestures or voice inflections that accompany the text.

Think through and re-read your comments before you post them.

Additional Guidelines:

Remember that English is not the primary language of many students. Avoid the use of slang or abbreviations.

Write responses in your own words and give credit when referencing the work or ideas of others’, please see how to correctly cite .

Reporting a Post

If you see an inappropriate post, please alert the course team by right clicking on the post and reporting this as abuse (see screenshot below) or forward the same to [email protected]

Week 11 Content Release

We have released Week 11 contents. This includes the following:

1. Video lectures

2. Tutorial lectures

3. Activity questions for each lecture

4. Practice assignment

5. Graded assignment

6. Transcripts

Best regards,

IITM - BSc Degree Team.

Scoring Logic for Online Quiz conducted on June 19 and June 20

Dear Student,

As announced in the class committee meeting, we are going to omit scores of two of the least scoring questions for each student for each subject. Due to the differing weights of each question in a course, we have created a document that will help clarifying how the scores are calculated.

Please find the link to the scoring logic document below.

Week 10 Content Release

We have released Week 10 contents. This includes the following:

Week 9 Content Release

We have released Week 9 contents. This includes the following:

Quiz on July 11

Dear student

This is to provide some information on upcoming quizzes that are scheduled for courses of first and second semester.

SEMESTER 1 courses:

SEMESTER 2 COURSES

The quizzes shaded in green colour are already completed with qualifier having been done in person and those on June 5, June 19 and June 20 conducted online.

We are planning for quizzes on July 11 at designated centres which you have to attend in person. Since we have been able to conduct only 1 quiz online, that too only in 5 subjects, we are planning to have quizzes in both sessions on July 11 2021 as shown, to give another chance to all students to better their scores and for those who could not attend the quizzes online for various reasons.

Semester 1 courses:   Quiz 2 in FN session and Quiz 3 in AN session

Semester 2 courses:  A blend of quiz 1-3 in FN and AN sessions; Weeks 1-4 in FN and Weeks 5-9 in the AN session

Calculation of quiz scores to be counted towards the final course score:

Semester 1 courses:  50% of average of Best 2 out of (Qualifier score, June 5 quiz, June 19 quiz, July 11 FN quiz, July 11 AN quiz)

Semester 2 courses:  50% of average of Best 2 out of (20 June 2021 quiz,  July 11 FN quiz, July 11 AN quiz)

The quizzes will be considered as applicable from the list for each course.

So kindly make it convenient to attend the quizzes in person on July 11.

We have made note of the change in exam city if given by you or will be using the city chosen earlier and are making arrangements to book the centre according to this.

Kindly do try to take a dose of vaccine if possible before the exam or based on doctor’s advice as per your health conditions.

Please let us know if you have any queries by writing to  [email protected] . in .

Warm regards

Hence you will not be seeing your scores after the deadline tonight on the "Scores" tab. We will evaluate the assignments and put out an announcement tomorrow after which you can check your scores. "Scores" tab will show "Evaluation pending" status. On the assignment page though, the question wise scoring will be seen after the deadline. Warm regards IITM BSc team

Week 5 Content Release

We have released Week 5 contents. This includes the following:

Week 3 deadline extended to May 30 2021

Dear student, We have already extended assignment 2 submission deadline to last Sunday and are now extending Assignment 3 submission deadline to coming Sunday- May 30 2021. This was possible only because the quiz 1 is being postponed. If the quiz were to be held on May 30 2021, we would not have been able to do so. We would like to state that  THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER EXTENSIONS ON ANY OF THE ASSIGNMENTS HENCEFORTH  this term as the programme timetable is quite tight. There are 10 days given for assignment submission under normal circumstances and we also count the best 6 out of first 9 assignments towards eligibility to write the final exam requiring average score in this to be >= 40/100.  This should give enough leeway for students to miss an assignment or two owing to maybe natural causes, college/work tasks, personal contingencies etc. Even if you miss submitting, hope you can always come back and practice those for the purpose of learning and preparing for the exams. Warm regards IITM BSc Degree team

Week 4 Content release.
