BA, BSc, MA, MSc, PhD - what do they all mean? Two Masters' students at graduation.

BA, BSc, MA, MSc, PhD (and more) are abbreviations of British degrees.

They reflect the specific level and discipline of a qualification achieved at university.

While most courses are conducted on a full-time basis, there are options for part-time, distance learning and other flexible learning arrangements.

Here is a breakdown of some of the most common qualifications and ones that Aberystwyth University offers.

  • BA = Bachelor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • BSc = Bachelor of Sciences;
  • BENG = Bachelor of Engineering (Software, Robotics and Physics);
  • LLB = Bachelor of Law.

Achieved after 3 to 4 years of study. The extra year (for a 4 year course) can be from a year studying abroad or a year working in industry.

Integrated-Masters:

  • MARTS = Masters of Arts;
  • MBIOL = Masters of Biology;
  • MCOMP = Masters of Computer Science;
  • MENG = Masters of Engineering;
  • MMATH = Masters of Mathematics;
  • MPHYS = Masters of Physics;
  • MSCI = Masters of Sciences and Humanities.

4 years course (3-year Bachelors, 1 year Masters) that enables you to secure a loan for the full duration rather than having to fund a Masters degree separately.

5 routes to getting a Doctorate

While most of those studying for a PhD take the PhD by thesis pathway, there are five viable routes to achieving a Doctorate degree

PhD by thesis

This is the most common means of getting a Doctorate degree. Over the three or four years of research at university, your PhD supervisor will support you as you aim to produce a thesis based on your research proposal .

A thesis is typically 60,000-90,000 words in length - although this can vary between institutions. For instance, the University of Glasgow's College of Social Sciences expects a thesis to be 70,000-100,000 words including references, bibliography and appendices, while the University of Cambridge has set an upper limit of 80,000 words.

Once completed, you'll need to defend your PhD thesis in front of a panel of examiners during your viva voce .

PhD by publication

This route involves submitting previously published work - such as books, book chapters and journal articles, which together form a coherent body of work and show evidence of an original contribution to a particular field of study.

It's often taken by mid-career academics that haven't had the opportunity to undertake a standard Doctorate degree.

Generally, a minimum of five to eight published pieces are required, but this varies between institutions and depends on their length. The published work will be assessed to the same rigorous standards as a traditional PhD by thesis.

You must also provide a written supporting statement, which can range from 5,000 to 20,000 words, and present your work to an academic committee. A supervisor will assist you with selecting which publications to submit and with the supporting statement.

Some universities accept only their own graduates for a PhD by publication, while others restrict this route to their academic staff. In general, you should have graduated from your first degree at least seven years ago to be eligible.

For example, The University of Manchester has published its own Guidance for the PhD By Published Work , with eligibility only extending to current members of staff.

Professional Doctorate

Geared primarily towards current professionals in vocational sectors such as healthcare , teaching and education , and engineering and manufacturing , this type of Doctorate degree includes a significant taught component and a smaller research project.

Professional Doctorates are often taken on a part-time basis and can last between two and eight years. Like their standard PhD counterparts, they usually begin in October or January.

While you won't typically be looking to get an academic job , your research is expected to contribute to theory as well as professional practice. Projects often revolve around a real-life issue that affects your employer.

Several professional Doctorates, such as the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), are accredited by a professional body - for instance, the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The British Psychological Society (BPS) - and may also lead to a professional qualification .

Common titles for graduates of professional Doctorate degrees include:

  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Doctor of Education (EdD)
  • Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Unlike many professional Doctorates, the EngD is typically offered as a full-time course and is aimed at young engineering graduates with little or no professional experience.

Integrated PhD

This four-year qualification, also known as the New Route PhD, involves studying a one-year research Masters degree (MRes) before progressing onto a three-year PhD.

Offered by a select number of universities across the UK, integrated PhDs are supported by the government and the British Council through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) . Visit Research Council funding for further information on research and funding for different types of PhD.

The integrated PhD involves a combination of taught materials, practical experience and advanced research. This allows you to learn subject-specific methodologies, while building the transferable skills that will enable you to become a leader in your chosen profession.

Institutions can also develop personalised integrated PhD programmes to meet each student's needs. For example, universities may offer you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - perfect if you're considering a career as a higher education lecturer .

As PhDs are based primarily on independent research rather than time spent in lectures and seminars, distance learning has always been a viable route for many Doctoral students.

PhDs by distance learning offered by course providers such as The Open University are therefore a good option to consider if you've got family or work commitments or are an international student - as this gives you the chance to undertake Doctoral research without having to live close to your chosen institution. It's also a suitable mode of study if your subject requires you to be based in a specific location away from the university.

For the most part, you'll be in touch with your supervisor by phone, email or Skype/Zoom. You'll need to bear in mind that even if you opt for this form of research, you'll generally still need to attend university for one or two weeks of each academic year for meetings and to receive research skills training. Your final examination may be undertaken either face-to-face or virtually.

With online PhDs, you can usually register as a full or part-time student. The level of fees you pay varies between institutions - some charge the same as for a standard PhD while others offer a reduced rate.

Check that any funding you plan to apply for is available to distance learning students, as this isn't always the case.

Program transfers between MSc and PhD 

You may request to transfer from the MSc to the PhD program with the recommendation of your thesis advisory committee.  

The transfer examination must take place between 16 - 23 months after the start of your MSc program (i.e. January - August in your second year).

Procedure for MSc to PhD transfer  

1. set up and prepare the committee .

Upon the recommendation of the thesis advisory committee, you and your supervisor will schedule the transfer examination and set up an Examination Committee.

If you are using the  Faculty directory  to seek members for your committee, only approach faculty  marked ‘yes’ under Graduate Faculty.

You will submit a transfer request at least four weeks before the examination using the  Transfer Request Form  (online form).  

The Examination Committee consists of:  

  • Examination Chair, a member of the LMP graduate faculty, who chairs the examining committee, and at her/his discretion may participate in questioning you;  
  • Two of your thesis advisory committee members, excluding your supervisor(s); and  
  • One other graduate faculty member from any graduate unit.

2. Prepare a research proposal 

You will prepare a Research Proposal and distribute it to the members of the examination committee (including the Chair) at least two weeks before the examination.  

You should also send the committee: 

  • Instructions for the MSc to PhD Transfer Examination Chair  (PDF) 
  • The transfer report to the Examination Chair  (Word Doc) 

Your research proposal should describe the experiments that you intend to perform as a PhD student. 

It is your task to convince the committee members that your proposed work will likely lead to novel and significant findings – passing the Transfer Exam depends on this.  

In general, good experiments have clearly described hypotheses, strong rationales (based on published data or your preliminary data that support your hypotheses), and feasible experimental approaches (well-established assays or assays that are within the expertise of your laboratory or your collaborator’s laboratory). 

Your research proposal should not exceed 11 pages (12-point font; double-spaced; page limit does not include references and figures/figure legends).  

The research proposal should include the following sections:  

  • Abstract : Summary of the proposal (~1 page)  
  • Introduction : The purpose of the introduction is to provide background information that allows the examiners to understand your proposed work. Try to avoid writing a generic overview of the field. Your introduction should be tailored to your proposal. (~3 pages)  
  • Preliminary data : This section should contain data you have generated that is relevant to your proposed work. The style should be similar to that of a Results Section of a manuscript. (~3 pages)  
  • Research plan : The research plan should contain two to three specific aims. Ideally for each aim, you should provide a rationale (the reason why you believe the aim is strong), describe the experiments you will perform to achieve the aim, discuss potential pitfalls, and indicate alternative approaches if your primary approach fails. (~4 pages)  

3. Deliver a presentation at the examination 

At the examination, you will give a presentation describing your research carried out to date as well as the research proposed for the PhD thesis. 

Your presentation should be 20 minutes. 

The committee will examine you on: 

  • your research 
  • the proposed research, and 
  • general knowledge related to the proposal. 

You should be prepared to discuss background knowledge and techniques as well as to defend the significance and feasibility of the proposed research.  

4. Committee discussion 

After the formal examination, you and your supervisor will leave the room. 

The Committee will then discuss your: 

  • examination 
  • written proposal 
  • academic record 
  • progress in research 
  • the proposal for PhD thesis. 

They will pay special attention to whether you have developed, or you have the potential to develop, the intellectual processes required for original thinking and independent research. 

All committee members must unanimously agree for the recommendation to transfer to the PhD program for it to be passed.   

If the Examination Committee does not recommend transfer to the PhD program 

Three options are available. The Committee can recommend you: 

  • revise the proposal and re-take the oral examination within 6 weeks; 
  • re-take the oral examination within 6 weeks, with no proposal revision; 
  • complete an MSc degree.  

Final decisions 

If the Examination Committee recommends transfer to the PhD program, the final decision will be made by the School of Graduate Studies.

This request requires approval of the Vice Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

On first glances, the difference between an MPhil and an MSc may appear marginal, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

While both degrees are a postgraduate Masters qualification, they’re designed for two opposite career paths – an MSc for a career in industry, and an MPhil for a career in research or on the way to a PhD. Learning the differences between the two forms of postgraduate study will allow you to make an informed decision about your next steps and offer a clearer path to your ideal career.

What Is an MPhil?

An MPhil is an advanced postgraduate degree short for Master of Philosophy . The degree is typically undertaken after an undergraduate degree by those who wish to gain specialised knowledge in original research. Although discussed later, it’s important to distinguish between the two ways an MPhil may be undertaken as we will only focus on one of them for reasons you will see.

An MPhil can be undertaken as either:

  • a  standalone degree lasting two years. Successful completion of this research degree will lead to being awarded a Master of Philosophy.
  • (1) their research skills are considered suitable and their MPhil programme is upgraded to a PhD programme, or
  • (2) their research skills are considered unsuitable, but they have the opportunity to complete the second year of their MPhil programme to be awarded a Master of Philosophy.

While the MPhils from both routes will be identical, it’s likely that if you’re trying to weigh up the differences between an MPhil and an MSc, you would be more interested in the standalone MPhil route given its greater similarities to an MSc. Because of this, we’ll mainly focus on the standalone path in comparing an MPhil to an MSc. What Is an MSc?

An MSc is a Master’s degree short for Master of Science . Like an MPhil, they’re typically undertaken shortly after completing an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor’s degree. While MPhil courses are available in nearly all fields, MSc’s are exclusive to STEM-based subjects, such as engineering, physics and maths.

An MSc may sound like a specialist degree reserved for a few career paths, however, they’re a common Masters course taught in most universities. Regardless of your subject or university, an MSc is typically a one-year course and aims to increase your knowledge of specific topics within your field.

Difference between an MPhil and an MSc

An MPhil and an MSc may seem similar – both are postgraduate Master’s degrees, both are typically undertaken after an undergraduate degree, and both are available to STEM students. Yet, there is a crucial difference between the two; and this difference will likely be the deciding factor in which degree is best for you.

This difference is your intended career path .

The degrees target two different professions; an MSc a profession in industry and an MPhil a profession in research. To make this possible, the degrees set out to provide you with a unique set of skills and specialised knowledge.

As an MSc is aimed at those wishing to develop a career in industry, it focuses on providing practical knowledge which has uses within the workplace. Therefore, while theoretical-related concepts may be taught, they will form a small part of your learning material with the focus instead on practical topics. For example, a civil engineering student may undertake an MSc in Construction Project Management ; here, topics from resource planning to cost and risk management would be covered.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

Unlike an MSc, which although may contain research-based components depending on the university, an MPhil is almost always a research-only degree. As a result, the degree is mainly undertaken by those who wish to pursue a research-based profession.

As discovered earlier, an MPhil may also be undertaken as a precursor to a PhD by those who wish to have a career in advanced research or academia. Where an MSc focuses on broader knowledge around several specialised subject areas, an MPhil focuses on a specific research question, within a specialised topic. In other words, it goes a level of specialisation deeper than an MSc. For example, had the previous civil engineering student opted for an MPhil instead of an MSc, their study and therefore resulting knowledge may have centred around ‘how risk management may better be managed through the use of technology’. It’s for this reason most consider an MPhil a ‘mini-PhD’ and an MSc as a specialised ‘addon’ to an undergraduate degree.

Academically, an MPhil is the most advanced Masters qualification you can obtain. For this reason, it sits above an MSc but below a PhD in terms of course difficulty, and ‘academic prestige’ if such a thing even exists.

However, you would be mistaken to think this makes an MPhil degree better or more valuable than an MSc degree. In truth, we’ve seen how both degrees meet the different long-term requirements of the postgraduate student undertaking them. Therefore, the better question would be ‘which degree is better suited for you?’.

If your goal is to gain practical knowledge which you can apply to your industry, then an MSc is likely for you. On the other hand, if your goal is to have a profession in education or research, an MPhil will likely be the better option, especially as a precursor to a PhD degree.

Managing The Transition From Masters to PhD Top Ten Tips

Taking The Research Leap

So you have completed your Masters. You enjoyed the experience of postgraduate work. And you’ve caught the bug. You’re going to make the leap to the next research step: the PhD . This article aims to provide ten top tips for managing the transition between a Masters (whether taught or research) and PhD work . It is intended for PhD students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, though some of the tips might also be suitable for Science PhD students. The principle is still the same: taking the next step on your academic journey is not always as tough as it seems.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed

A PhD is generally 80, 000 words. A Masters thesis tends to be around the 20,000 word mark. Starting out on a PhD can, therefore, be truly overwhelming; there seems to be so much time, and so many words, to explore your research topic. Prepare for this by planning short-term goals rather than getting lost in the expanse of the three or four years you have ahead of you.

Go to visit your supervisor

Your supervisor may be someone you already know, or they might be completely new. In any case, they are your first point of contact and—generally—they will have experienced the PhD experience first-hand. Try to arrange regular meetings and ask them to give you some immediate goals to achieve.

Don’t let the scale of the research get you down

A common first step on a PhD is to undertake a form of literature review. This can either be very specific or rather vague and can seem like an unassailable mountain. Concentrate on a specific area or theme at any one time and check in regularly with your supervisor to make sure this research will actually add to the PhD.

Build on the skills gained from your Masters

In some cases, students are able to write a PhD thesis on a broadly similar topic to their Master’s dissertation. Don’t let the work you did then go to waste—draw on the initial Master’s research and indeed the skills, like time management and organisation, essential to completing the Master’s.

Go to support classes and networking events

Meeting fellow first-year PhD students can be a great way to share experiences and develop common research and reading strategies. Networking events are also a great way to get out of the isolation that often accompanies a PhD in the Humanities and Social Sciences, while you can also meet later-stage PhD students who may be working on similar areas.

Write little and often

Master’s often tend to be centred on long essays and a dissertation, which may well deal with very discreet topics. Working on a PhD on one topic necessitates regular writing to keep a track of your research findings and to reflect on the future direction of the project. Writing short pieces, and submitting these to your supervisor to read through, can lead to a narrowing of the research project that will fit the confines of an 80,000-word thesis.

Read the requirements of the degree

It might seem a little odd to suggest reading the regulations about the conferment of a PhD degree when you have already obtained a place to study. Yet looking at the precise requirements of the degree, which generally mention the need for a substantial piece of original work, can focus the early research stages and prevent getting too carried away with interesting, though not particularly helpful, side projects.

Make a point of being collegial

A PhD is frequently seen as a stepping stone to the next stage of an academic career. Regardless of your motivations for studying a doctorate, the big difference between a Master’s and a PhD is your change in status. You are now a researcher and as such, it can be really helpful to seize the opportunities that come with this: opportunities to attend research seminars, the potential of a research mentor or indeed teaching mentor and opportunities to talk less formally with academic staff.

Read up on the upgrade process

Many PhD degree programmes require an upgrade from MPhil to PhD status, normally after the first year of study. Discuss this process in advance with your supervisor and other members of staff (such as the Director of Graduate Studies) to plan in advance and ensure that your work from the first year will be sufficiently focussed to pass the upgrade process. Some institutions have more stringent requirements than others, so it pays to prepare some time in advance.

Enjoy, reflect, respond

The first year of the PhD can pass very quickly; try to enjoy this initial experience and use it as a stepping stone between the very focussed Masters programme and the comparative autonomy to widen your research project. Reflecting on a regular basis—on a blog or through a diary—on the progress made in the first year can be really helpful to show how far your project has developed. And finally, be open and responsive to the suggestions of your supervisor and other academics, at your own institution or elsewhere; their feedback matters more now than it ever did during the Master’s and can really help to shape a successful PhD.

If you're at a crossroads between employment and further study, take the time to consider the huge variety of postgraduate courses on offer.

From one-year taught courses to three-year research PhDs, choosing the right postgraduate course can give you the edge in a jobs market already crowded with first degree holders. Find out what's available, what's involved and which type of course will best suit your needs. When weighing up the pros and cons of going into work or further study remember that you need not limit yourself to just one of the two.

Take a look at the lists below to find a qualification and a study method that works around you...and your career. Once you've short-listed your favourites, it's a very good idea to have a chat with potential employers to find out how they view the qualification, or even the university, you are considering. Your main options are:

Taught courses

Master of arts (MA) or Master of science (MSc)

  • Taught courses most commonly come in the form of a masters degree
  • One to two years full time
  • Two to three years part time
  • Includes seminars, lectures, tutorials, project work, oral work, some research, a thesis/dissertation and exams. The balance between these varies.

Research degrees

Doctorates (PhDs)

PhDs can be started immediately after your first degree or a masters course. It’s more common for students of sciences than arts to start a PhD straight after an undergraduate degree. They involve research into a chosen topic under the supervision of an experienced academic.

  • Three to four years full time
  • Four to six years part time
  • Considered very intellectually challenging
  • Includes a thesis of around 100,000 words and usually an oral presentation.

An EngD (engineering doctorate) is an alternative to a PhD for students looking for a career in engineering. Like those studying for a PhD, EngD students will conduct in-depth research. However, they will also spend up to 75% of their time gaining direct experience in the industry by working for a company.

Masters programmes by research (including MSc, MPhil, MRes)

These are known as MRes (master of research), MPhil (master of philosophy), MSc by research or MA by research. Put simply, these are masters programmes that rely heavily on your own private research, supervised by an experienced academic.

  • Two to four years part time
  • Usually involves training in research methods, but less teaching than a taught masters
  • Similar in structure to a doctorate, only shorter
  • Includes the production of a thesis and usually an oral presentation
  • Good preparation for a PhD
  • Fees usually lower than for taught masters.

A new model of Doctoral training

Integrated PhDs provide a new model of postgraduate training. They retain the depth, rigour and focus of a conventional PhD while also providing a broader training experience.

While the specific training routes may vary, they typically consist of a one-year Master's course (MSc or MRes) which leads straight into a three-year PhD.

This new style of doctoral training is available within our Research Council-funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) and Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs).

CDTs and DTPs

Our CDTs and DTPs recruit cohorts of students from a broad spectrum of disciplines, creating vibrant multi-disciplinary communities.

The diversity of students recruited to these centres reflects the breadth of research which they cover.

As well as benefitting from a variety of training opportunities and cohort-building activities, students studying within these centres may also have access to a supervisor and facilities at a partner institution.

Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs)

We offer the following DTPs:

  • Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet , funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and hosted by the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment.
  • Medical Research Council Studentships – Imperial College Medical Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) , funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Photonics , available through several EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) in which Photonics research group members are involved.

Imperial is also a partner in London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS) , funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

The MSc by Research - Not just a 'stepping stone' to a PhD

The Master's by Research (MScR) degree is often thought of as simply a stepping stone towards PhD study. In this blog post, we explain why that's simply not the case - an MScR can enhance your career prospects across a range of industries.

What’s the difference between an MSc and an MScR?

The MSc (Master of Science) and MScR (Master’s by Research) qualifications are both different forms of a Master’s degree.

Taught Master's (MSc) 

An MSc is a taught Master’s degree which is typically delivered over the course of one year through a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, as well as practical and lab work.

Although there are elements of research work within an MSc, particularly during the dissertation stage towards the end of the degree, an MSc student learns primarily through taught methods . Therefore, the general structure of a Master’s degree consists of a number of taught courses, followed by the submission of a dissertation.

Master's by Research (MScR)

A Master’s by Research (MScR) degree has a slightly different structure. The MScR is a research degree which is supported by a certain number of taught modules.

It still requires the student to submit a dissertation at the end of the year. However, the exact structure of MScR programmes can vary within institutions.  

For example, at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine , some of our programmes split the year up into two different halves, with the first half devoted to teaching modules (much like the MSc) and then the second half comprising full-time research.

On the other hand, some programmes offer a year-round research project which is then supplemented by teaching throughout the year.  

However, despite occasional differences in the way an MScR may be structured, it’s safe to say that, in comparison to the MSc, students on Master’s by Research programmes will have a longer period of time devoted to intensive research .

Why is an MScR usually considered to be a ‘stepping stone’ towards a PhD?

The Master’s by Research is a full-time, one year research degree that gives students an excellent insight into doctoral study.

Students are introduced to research methods and skills which will help prepare them for life as a PhD student and, therefore, the MScR degree has traditionally been viewed as a useful ‘stepping stone’ towards full doctoral study .

Developing research skills

An MScR is an excellent choice for people who are already fairly certain that they would like to pursue academic research as a career path.

This is because you are more likely to be asked to contribute to conferences and journal papers in your supervisor’s lab, while engaging in independent research which will hopefully help to strengthen your passion in a particular subject area.  

However, an MScR is also good preparation for a career in industry or an allied profession that requires an understanding of research methods (e.g. scientific writing).

What if I complete an MScR but decide a PhD isn’t for me?

Don’t panic! Although many MScR graduates move straight on to PhD study, some students decide that full-time academic research simply isn’t for them.

As stated above, there are plenty of people out there who use a Master’s by Research degree to move into careers outside academia.

So if you find yourself in a position where you don’t think that a PhD is for you, then don’t fret – you will have earned a highly valuable and respected Master’s degree that will set you apart in the jobs market.

You will also have developed an excellent range of transferable skills to enhance your career prospects across a wide range of industries.

How will a Master’s by Research benefit a future career outside academia?

As well as developing key skills, a Master’s degree (whether MSc or MScR) is an excellent way to extend your professional network.

If you decide not to go down the academic route, you will likely find that your Master’s by Research has still provided you with lifelong contacts in science and medicine .

Conferences, poster days and society events all provide opportunities for Master’s students to make important connections. These kinds of networks could prove invaluable, even if you decide to make the switch to a more industry-based role.

Earning potential

Furthermore, many studies suggest that earning a Master’s qualification will increase your earning potential . Although it’s not a guarantee, having a Master’s degree (MSc or MScR) on your CV makes it more likely that you’ll earn a higher salary.

Statistics show that full-time employed, working-age postgraduates in the UK had an average salary of £39,000 in 2017, compared with £33,000 for working-age undergraduates.*

We encourage our MSc students to consider applying to our PhD program.   Enrolment in the PhD can be via transfer or upon completion of the MSc.  

For a "head start" admission to the PhD program , excellent UBC Statistics MSc students may be permitted to enroll in the term 2 offering of the PhD qualifying course, STAT 548, while in the second year of the MSc program.  Thus,  when formally entering the PhD program after completion of the MSc, the student will have a "head start", not just by completing STAT 548 half a year earlier, but by connecting earlier with possible research projects.   An interested student from the UBC Statistics MSc program  should simultaneously apply for PhD admission and STAT 548 entry by early December of the second year of the MSc program.  Should the Admissions Committee be amenable, the student is offered both a spot in the PhD program for the following September, and permission to start STAT 548 in January. To transfer from the MSc to the PhD , UBC Statistics MSc students may apply to the Department after completing one year of study in the MSc program with 18 credits, of which at least 9 credits must be at the 500 level or above and at least 9 credits must be at First Class standing. Please note that meeting these requirements does not guarantee permission to transfer; for admission to the PhD program, students must show clear evidence of research ability, as demonstrated in their academic records and letters of recommendation. If you are considering transferring and meet these requirements, please speak with the gradadv [at] stat.ubc.ca (Graduate Advisor.)  

Upon completion of the MSc , students apply to the PhD program by the usual process.

M.Sc Ph.D is a three to six years-long dual degree programme that combines MSc and P.hD. This integrated course rewards a student with a double degree. A M.Sc. is a postgraduate degree in science discipline. Candidates who have completed a B.Sc. are eligible for enrolling in M.Sc. While a PhD is a doctoral level research degree programme. Candidates who have completed 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4 level course are eligible for enrolling in the Ph.D. course. The multi-disciplinary curriculum covers the core and elective course modules. M.Sc. Ph.D integrated course is designed to fulfil the requirements of a modern researcher of familiarity with the experimental and theoretical fields.

M.Sc. PhD stands for Master of Science- Doctor of Philosophy. It is an integrated programme designed by combining postgraduate degree M.Sc. and doctoral degree Ph.D. It involves advanced courses, foundation courses, and research work. This M.Sc. Ph.D dual degree program consists of two semesters, and for the first two years in each, students are dedicated to pursuing some small research projects. They are given a choice to select their guides and laboratories during this period. The next 4.5 to 5 years of the candidate's educational journey revolves around research. M.Sc Ph.D integrated course is ideal as it spares additional years for those students who pursue both M.Sc and Ph.D separately.

M.Sc.-Ph.D dual degree program fee structure varies significantly across government and private-run institutions. The fee structure at public institutions fluctuates between Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 2.38 Lakhs per academic year. The fee structure at private institutions fluctuates between Rs. 2.60 Lakh to Rs. 11.20 Lakh per academic year.

On average, top institutions like IIT-Bombay charges Rs. 50,000 per academic year, IIT- Kanpur charges Rs. Thirty-six thousand per academic year, and IIT- Kharagpur charges Rs. 12,000 per academic year. Other than the tuition fee, these charges often include the library fees, hostel charges, campus development charges, museums/ art visits, and incidentals. Public colleges typically charge a lower fee.

It is an integrated course of Master of Science with Doctorate of Philosophy ideal for students with scientific vigour for theoretical knowledge and research.

Depending on the choice or interest, students can choose a specialisation that edges their research-oriented skills and aids them in constructing a career in this field. M.Sc Ph.D integrated course is an ideal programme for students with an inclination towards advanced research in fundamental sciences.

M.Sc. Ph.D dual degree is a program explicitly designed for students who choose to pursue a research-oriented career.

The M.Sc-Ph.D integrated degree program involves research work, foundation courses, and advanced courses that rewards students with both the M.Sc and Ph.D course programs simultaneously on completion of one program.

Students who complete the M.Sc+Ph.D integrated degree course will be paid a stipend for their fellowship associated with the institution.a

The Master of Science with Doctorate of Philosophy degree program typically includes writing a thesis or dissertation in the M.Sc period.

The M.Sc course program is designed for those students with a want to involve themselves in scientific research & theoretical knowledge with specialisations in the field of interest.

Students with an M.Sc+Ph.D integrated degree course can get an average starting pay package of INR 26,000/- to 30,000/- per month, depending on the job profile and employment area.

The institutions like Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar , University of Engineering and Management, Kolkata IIT, Kharagpur , offer the M.Sc+Ph.D integrated course.

The eligibility criterion for the M.Sc Ph.D integrated degree is similar to various integrated programs in other disciplines. The following candidates are eligible for an M.sc Ph.D course -

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology or Chemistry or Pharmacy or Biology or Mathematics or Agriculture or Veterinary Sciences or Physics as applicable to individual disciplines, under the 10+2+3/4 system, can apply to this program.

Candidates with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply for the Mathematical Sciences.

Students with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Biotechnology paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply to the Biological Sciences.

Candidates who have cleared JEST are eligible to apply for an M.Sc Ph.D integrated degree.

Candidates who seek admission for M.sc Ph.D integrated degree at IISc should qualify in the JAM Entrance examination.

Additional Criteria Requirements

The minimum eligibility criteria for admission in M.Sc. Ph.D integrated degree program is an aggregate of 55 percent to 60 percent and above or equivalent grade in the Bachelor’s degree.

The minimum eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates are relaxed to pass class over the first class in the qualifying examination.

Departmental specifications require an eligibility criterion of subjects at the Bachelor's or 10+2 standard levels. To deem eligible for certain institutional departments, candidates must ensure that these requirements are met.

Final year graduates - students appearing for their final year qualifying examination and awaiting the results are also eligible to apply. However, this sect of students should have met the eligibility criteria for the award of the qualifying degree, including all the entrance examinations, dissertation projects, and viva-voce at the time of admission.

Candidates who pursue M.Sc. Ph.D. integrated course develop following skills over the period of time being enrolled in the dual degree integrated programme.

The admission procedure for M.Sc. Ph.D. dual degree program consists of a written test - Entrance examination. Candidates need to qualify in the written entrance test. Qualified students will be called for final selection. Qualified students will have to complete a six-year course. Upon successful completion, students can successfully start with their course program.

Aspirants must appear for an entrance examination to get admission into M.Sc. Ph.D integrated course there are various institutions-based entrance examinations for the M.Sc. Ph.D dual degree program. However, the top four entrance examination are as follows:

M.Sc Ph.D Entrance Exam

Admissions to M.Sc. Ph.D. programmes are provided on the basis of candidates performance in the entrance examination or merit of previously passing examinations. Several institutions conduct their own entrance examination to provide admissions while the rest accept the scores of national and state level entrance examinations. We have provided below details of major M.Sc. Ph.D. entrance examinations.

JEE Advanced: JEE Advanced is also known as Joint Entrance Examination Advanced. It is a national level entrance examination famous for providing admissions in engineering colleges. JEE Advanced score is valid for admissions in technical and architectural courses.

BITSAT: BITSAT stands for Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test. BIT SAT is a university level entrance examination conducted to provide admissions in various academic courses running in college.

Process to Transfer from Master of Science (MSc) to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Students may be permitted to transfer from the MSc to the PhD program if their academic record in graduate studies is outstanding have made excellent progress in their research, and have demonstrated the potential to complete a PhD project.  Requests must be supported by the supervisory committee.

Process to Transfer from MSc to PhD

Note: It is not required for MSc students to transfer to a PhD program. This information is for MSc students who have decided, in consultation with their supervisor and supervisory committee, that they would like to pursue a PhD.

By 12 months: MDCH - Transfer from MSc to PhD

An exceptional student in the MSc program may demonstrate the potential to complete a PhD program through the following:        

  • completion of courses with A or A+;       
  • first author publications and contributions to other manuscripts;        
  • participation in, and contributions to, research projects; and·        
  • a research proposal that demonstrates ability to think critically and a sophisticated approach to the subject expected for a PhD project.

With the support of his/her supervisory committee, the student may request a change in their registration status to a student in the PhD program.

Timing of the Request for Transfer

  • The transfer request must be initiated within the first 8-12 months of the MSc program to facilitate the completion of the manuscript defense by a maximum of 16 months      
  • The request cannot be made after the student is well advanced through the MSc program.  

Process for Requesting a Transfer from MSc to PhD 

  • Student  initiates transfer by making a request to the Graduate Program Director via the Graduate Program Administrator. 
  • Supervisory Committee Members  must agree that the student is working at a PhD student level and that the student’s research plans are of PhD thesis scope and depth, and communicate this to the Graduate Program Director to initiate the transfer process. Supervisory Committee Members must each write recommendation letters supporting the student's transfer. The letters should identify elements of the student's performance that demonstrate their potential for pursuing a research program leading to a PhD degree. Send completed letters to the Graduate Program Director, and cc the Graduate Program Administrator. 
  • Student provides a copy of a PhD level thesis proposal and CV to the Graduate Program Director, and cc the Graduate Program Administrator.  
  • Graduate Program Director  reviews student’s transcript, CV, thesis proposal, and letters from committee to assess whether the transfer request should proceed to the oral transfer defense exam stage. 
  • With Graduate Program Director approval, the Supervisor(s) schedules a 2.5 hour oral transfer defense exam to be attended by: the student, the supervisory committee and the Graduate Program Director who serves as oral transfer defense exam chair and external examiner. 
  • At the oral defense, the Student  defends their PhD-level thesis proposal*.  
  • Student  must send the version of the document being defended to examiners a minimum of 14 days prior to the oral transfer defense exam. 
  • By noon the day before the oral transfer defense exam , each examiner (i.e. supervisory committee member) will send the Graduate Program Director, cc to Graduate Program Administrator, an individual examiner appraisal of the work being defended. The Graduate Program Administrator’s office will provide examiners with the blank examiner appraisal template.  Examiners are asked to appraise whether the work being defended is of the scope and depth of PhD student level research and whether arguments supply evidence of PhD student level critical thinking and writing.  
  • The oral transfer defense exam will begin with the student providing a 10-minute presentation. The student presentation will be followed by two slightly condensed rounds (75 minutes total) of questions from examiners.   
  • The supervisor(s) will take notes of examiner questions for post-defense review with the student. After the oral transfer defense exam, these notes will be sent to the Graduate Program Director to review and filed in the Graduate Program Administrator office as part of tracking of this process. These notes also support the recommendation to the Faculty of Graduate Studies about whether the transfer should be approved.
  • Upon completion of the second round of questions, the student will be asked to leave the oral transfer defense exam session while examiners deliberate.  
  • The student will be invited to return to discuss the outcome and next steps. 
  • Assuming all agree, the supervisor(s) together with the student will complete a transfer to PhD form that includes a rationale along with an updated funding agreement form. These forms are approved by the Graduate Program Director and the recommendation for transfer submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.   

* The student can instead defend a first-authored manuscript that is ready or recently accepted for publication. 

Transfer Defense Format

The student defends his/her manuscript before a Committee consisting of 3 CHS Faculty Members:

  • Graduate Program Director      
  • Two examiners chosen by the Supervisor, who must have expertise in the content area and have no conflict of interest with the student or supervisor
  • The supervisor may attend as an observer  

The student presents a 10-minute oral presentation of the manuscript, followed by an oral defense not exceeding 75 minutes. At least 2/3 Committee members must agree that the manuscript is sound, demonstrates critical thinking and writing consistent with a PhD level.

Following a Successful Transfer Defense

  • Graduate Program Director notifies the Supervisor, Student and Graduate Program Administrator
  • Graduate Program Administrator sends the Change of Program or Status Form to the student
  • Student and Supervisor sign the form and return it to the Graduate Program Administrator

By 24 months: All other programs - Transfer from MSc to PhD

Transfer Policy for all Medicine Graduate Programs (except MDCH)

Students may be permitted to transfer from the MSc to the PhD program if their academic record in graduate studies is outstanding and they have made excellent progress in their research. The transfer process  must be completed no later than 24 months after the student's start date in the program . 

In order to complete the transfer: 

1. A research proposal at the level of a doctoral degree must be prepared and circulated to all Supervisory Committee Members. This draft may be an expanded version of the MSc proposal (which is due to the program office within the first 12 months of the student's program). 

MDSC students : Please have your committee complete the PhD Draft Research Proposal form prior to your transfer meeting and submit it to your GPA.

2. The Program Director must chair a supervisory committee meeting where the potential transfer is discussed

3. At that meeting, criteria outlined in the  PhD Transfer Checklist  must be discussed and approved by all committee members. 

4. Once you have had your transfer meeting and the PhD Transfer Checklist is approved by your committee, a subsequent Change of Program Request Form and an updated Confirmation of Funding Form (from your supervisor) must also be completed and submitted to your Program Administrator in conjunction with your meeting paperwork. The confirmation of funding agreement must be in accordance with the GSE Office’s current funding policy .

5. Meeting minutes, the Supervisory Committee Meeting Progress Report form, committee approvals, and the Transfer Checklist must be submitted to the GPA before the Change of Program form can be processed. 

***All paperwork must be submitted to the GPA no later than the fee payment deadline for the term that you plan to officially transfer . Fee deadlines are available in the  Grad Studies Calendar.

Transferring from one degree program to another may impact any scholarships/awards that you may hold. It is advised that you contact the  Awards Office  if you are unsure whether a transfer could impact any award(s) that you hold.

UMBC’s Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department offers both M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Computer Science. Below you will find information on both Computer Science graduate programs, and information about how to apply.  We also offer a M.P.S. (Masters in Professional Studies) in Cybersecurity, two graduate certificate programs in Cybersecuity and are developing an M.P.S. program and graduate certificate programs in Data Science.

M.S. in Computer Science

Students pursuing a Masters of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science must choose between the thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis option requires the completion of 30 credits, including six credits of CMSC 799.  The thesis must be defended with an oral examination and approved by the student’s master’s thesis committee. The non-thesis option requires the completion of 33 credits.  All students must complete CMSC 641 Algorithms, one course chosen from the “system” area, and one course chosen from the “applications” area.  The degree must be completed within five years and students must maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. Ph.D. in Computer Science

Students pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science are required to complete 11 courses, including three core courses in addition to 18 credit hours of doctoral dissertation research. Ph.D. students must complete and defend their dissertation, pass the comprehensive portfolio, and pass the preliminary examination and admission to candidacy. In addition, Ph.D. students must complete a minimum of three years of full-time graduate study, with at least one year of full-time study at UMBC. The program must be completed within 4 years after admission to doctoral candidacy and students must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0. While this can sound pretty attractive there are some distinct disadvantages of doing this. Both the pros and cons of taking such a transfer are summarized below.

Advantages to Transferring from MSc to PhD

  • write only one thesis rather than two graduate theses, and thus have only one thesis defence
  • move into PhD program without need to have completed a research project
  • spread the course load over more years as you do not need to complete the required 4 MSc courses before transferring to the PhD program

Advantages to Completing the MSc Thesis and Degree

  • Garner some valuable experience in writing a thesis . Most students have no idea how long it will take them to put together their thesis. Writing up your MSc will give you some valuable insights into both the process and your ability. Such writing also helps tremendously in formulating new research for your PhD as it gets you reading the relevant background, and will provide you with excellent feedback on your organizational, writing and analytical skills.
  • Gain confidence in both your work and your writing . Until you have actually written and defended a thesis you have no idea how much confidence you will gain in going through this process successfully. The extra time taken to write up an MSc can certainly be countered by the increased efficiency you will get from this confidence boost.
  • Submit a paper or two for publication . If you are planning to stay on to extend your MSc work into a PhD, then focus the MSc thesis on work that can now be written up for publication. This too s invaluable experience but even better, it's a great way to enhance scholarship, and eventually job, applications. Published papers will also introduce you to and raise your profile in your field of research, also invaluable.
  • Put some of your research behind you . By writing up some of your research for publication, you will not be tempted to collect more data on the subject of that work. This will allow you to focus your PhD research on more important topics.
  • Have a thesis completed and a degree in hand . In the unlikely event that your PhD research flounders, or you change your mind for whatever reason, you will already have a degree completed. If you take this route there is no going back.

M.S. Leading to Ph.D.

This policy applies  only to students who enter the PhD program without a Masters degree recognized by Columbia. Every MS/PhD track student (registration status ETCOMS) must apply for MS graduation in order to receive the MS degree from Columbia University and be awarded advanced standing (two RUs) towards the PhD.

The faculty will approve the MS degree application following successful completion of six (6)  breadth requirement areas completed in the Computer Science Department at Columbia, including all four (4) distribution areas and any two (2) COMS elective areas [departmental requirement].  The student must also satisfactorily complete at least 30 points and at least six graduate lecture courses while enrolled for MS/PhD, not including imports, comp exams, or courses taken while an undergraduate at Columbia or Barnard [SEAS requirement].

[Revised by full faculty vote, 11/6/13, to remove 4701 from the core.  Revised again by full faculty vote, 4/4/14, to abolish the core entirely and institute the distribution requirement.  Students enrolled in Spring 2014 or earlier may choose either four core topics or the four-topic distribution requirement, plus two electives, to fulfill the MS/PhD requirements.  Students enrolled in Fall 2013 or earlier may treat 4701 as core for this purpose.]

Computer Science at Columbia University

Upcoming events, in the news, press mentions, dean boyce's statement on amicus brief filed by president bollinger.

President Bollinger announced that Columbia University along with many other academic institutions (sixteen, including all Ivy League universities) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging the Executive Order regarding immigrants from seven designated countries and refugees. Among other things, the brief asserts that “safety and security concerns can be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the values America has always stood for, including the free flow of ideas and people across borders and the welcoming of immigrants to our universities.”

This recent action provides a moment for us to collectively reflect on our community within Columbia Engineering and the importance of our commitment to maintaining an open and welcoming community for all students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff. As a School of Engineering and Applied Science, we are fortunate to attract students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, from across the country, and from around the world. MS to PhD Transfer

Changing from Master's to PhD Program

Students in the Master's degree program who wish to enter the PhD program can apply through the regular admission process or through the MS to PhD Transfer program.

Applications submitted through the regular admission process will be reviewed during the traditional admission periods of the PhD program. Applications to the PhD program are due December 15 of each year for the following fall term.

For the MS to PhD Transfer program, current MS students who meet the eligibility requirements outlined below may apply for the transfer during the review period, which will be a 2–3 week period each May–June. Details will be emailed out to students shortly after the end of the spring semester and final grades have been reported. The PhD Admission Committee will review all applicants with decisions made in mid-June. Further details will be emailed out each year.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Overall accumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher for the entirety of your University of Illinois MS study, including the prior semester of applying.
  • Successfully completed a minimum of 3 STAT 500-level courses with a final grade of an 'A' or higher.
  • Must be a current MS student at the time of applying for the transfer program. MS students who graduate in May prior to the transfer application period are ineligible and should apply to the PhD program through the traditional application system.

There is no application fee for the MS to PhD Transfer program.

Application materials submitted with your MS application will be used to evaluate your request to transfer to the PhD program. You will be permitted to supply additional and updated materials at the time of applying for the transfer program.

Khalifa University’s interdisciplinary Master’s degree and PhD programs are focused on the skills and sectors in greatest demand regionally and internationally. Our internationally renowned faculty give students hands-on training and guidance to become world-class problem-solvers. Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers its graduate students comprehensive scholarships that cover all necessary educational expenses and may also offer recipients the potential to earn an attractive monthly stipend. The scholarships available are as follows:

The Buhooth Scholarship Program is an ambitious initiative that aims to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to transform the UAE into a center of excellence in engineering and science research. The initiative offers Master’s and Doctorate scholarships to UAE Nationals with the aim of promoting graduate studies and research, as well as developing specialized human capital in the areas of science and engineering for the benefit of national institutions.

Students accepted to the Buhooth program will be registered in selected Master’s and Doctorate programs offered by Khalifa University of Science and Technology, or top international universities.

Buhooth Scholarship Benefits

There are two types of Buhooth Scholarship:

1) UAE-Based Buhooth

This scholarship will provide an opportunity for applicants to pursue Master’s and Doctorate degree studies at Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

  • The scholarship will be open for selected majors only, as determined by Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
  • Under the conditions of the scholarship, an applicant holding a Bachelor’s degree must sign a contract committing to completing their Master’s degree at Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
  • Under the conditions of the scholarship, an applicant holding a Master’s degree must sign a contract committing to complete their Doctorate degree at Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
  • The indicative monthly stipend for UAE-based Buhooth Scholarship is as follows (subject to change):

During MSc:     Single AED 30,000      Married AED 33,000 During PhD:     Single AED 36,000      Married AED 39,000

2)   International Buhooth

This scholarship aims to provide an opportunity for applicants to pursue Master’s and Doctorate degree studies at top international universities.

  • The scholarship is open for selected majors only, as determined by Khalifa University of Science and Technology.
  • The scholarship is highly competitive and will only be offered to a limited number of successful applicants each year.
  • An applicant holding a Bachelor’s degree will sign a contract committing to complete both their Master’s and Doctorate degrees at the selected institution and then must accept employment in a suitable post for a defined period of time, which must be at least equal to the length of time of the study period.
  • An applicant holding a Master’s degree will sign a contract committing to complete their Doctorate studies at the selected institution and then accept employment in a suitable post for a period of time which is at least equal to the study period.
  • The stipend amount includes an additional allowance to UAE Nationals living outside the UAE.
  • Recipients of this scholarship are placed on an “employment contract” and therefore are registered on the Abu Dhabi Retirement Pensions and Benefits Fund during the period of study and the period of employment that is included as part of the scholarship criteria.
  • International Buhooth scholarship recipients will receive medical insurance for themselves, their spouse and eligible dependents.
  • Recipients of this scholarship are eligible for yearly round trip airline tickets for themselves, their spouse and eligible dependents.

Eligibility Criteria for Buhooth Scholarship

  • Applicants must be UAE Nationals.
  • Applicants must satisfy the admission requirements of the academic program that they are applying to. Please note that admission is highly competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee entry into the program.
  • In order to be considered for the International Buhooth Scholarship, applicants must have excellent credentials and provide a letter of offer from a top-ranked international institution. The letter should be submitted at the time of application to Khalifa University.

Applicants are automatically considered for a graduate scholarship, if applicable. No additional scholarship application is required. The recipients will be confirmed at the conclusion of the admission process.

The KU MED Scholarship program supports students who have chosen to pursue a career that will positively impact on people’s lives. This program offers scholarships to all students to support graduate studies in medicine. Students who receive a Khalifa University (KU) MED Scholarship will be registered in the Pre-Medicine Bridge program. Please note that scholarship benefits are subject to change.

KU MED Scholarship for UAE Nationals

  • A monthly stipend of AED27,000.
  • Full university tuition paid by the university.
  • Support to attend educational events locally and internationally.
  • Housing in university accommodations at no cost, subject to availability.
  • Textbooks are provided by the university.

KU MED Scholarship for Expatriates

Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers the following scholarships to support qualified international students enrolled in graduate programs on a full-time basis. The University reserves the right to make changes to the published scholarship benefits and conditions without prior notice.

  • Master Research Teaching Scholarship (MRTS)

The MRTS scholarship supports international students pursuing a Master degree at Khalifa University. Scholarship benefits include:

  • Full coverage of tuition fees.
  • Medical insurance coverage for students sponsored by Khalifa University (student visa).
  • Support to attend international research conferences.
  • Mobilization and demobilization flight assistance for overseas international students.
  • Monthly stipend of AED 4,000.

The CMDRTS scholarship supports international students pursuing both the Master’s and Doctorate degrees at Khalifa University. Students who wish to complete a Master degree only should apply for the MRTS scholarship. CMDRTS scholarship benefits include:

  • During MSc:     AED 8,000
  • During PhD:     AED 12,000
  • Free University accommodation (or accommodation assistance of up to AED 2,000 per month if University accommodation is not available) for eligible students.
  • Doctoral Research Teaching Scholarship (DRTS)

The DRTS scholarship supports international students pursuing a Doctorate degree at Khalifa University. Scholarship benefits include:

  • Monthly stipend of AED 12,000.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology offers this scholarship to help employed UAE Nationals undertake graduate studies on a part-time basis. The scholarship provides full coverage of tuition fees.

During their graduate studies, students have the opportunity to conduct research within one of the research centers based at Khalifa University of Science and Technology. In order to be eligible for sponsorship, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria specific to the relevant center, as well as the admission requirements of the academic program to which they are applying.

Emirates ICT Innovation Center – EBTIC

EBTIC is an information and communications technology research and innovation center established by Etisalat, British Telecom, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology, with the support of UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’s ICT Fund.

EBTIC aims to advance intelligent systems and technologies for the Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and NGN-enabled ICT applications and services, to put in place the support infrastructure to facilitate, develop and enable a digital-networked economy in the UAE and beyond.

Through collaboration with industry, universities and governmental organizations, EBTIC is expected to become a driving force for innovation in the field of NGN-enabled ICT applications and services, within the region and abroad.

EBTIC offers fully-funded Buhooth Scholarships for UAE National students wishing to undertake a Master’s or Doctorate degree on a full-time basis. Student research projects are linked to the major projects being undertaken within the Center.

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy the admission requirements of the academic program to which they are applying and meet the eligibility criteria outlined for UAE-based Buhooth Scholarships.

Aerospace Research and Innovation Center (ARIC)

The Aerospace Research and Innovation Center (ARIC) was established in 2012 as a joint effort between Mubadala Aerospace and Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research to undertake cutting-edge research in aerospace engineering.

The center focuses on developing new and novel techniques for manufacturing advanced composites and developing advanced procedures for the automated manufacturing and assembly of aerospace structures.

ARIC also acts as a global research hub, collaborating with leading universities across the world, developing research opportunities over a broad spectrum of areas, and assisting technology transfer and innovation possibilities across the aerospace sector.

ARIC offers fully-funded Buhooth Scholarships for UAE National students wishing to undertake a Master’s or Doctorate degree on a full-time basis. Its research projects are linked to the major projects being undertaken within ARIC and involve working closely with the aerospace industry on the latest technological challenges.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU), in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC), offers the CSC- KU Scholarship to highly qualified Chinese nationals admitted to PhD in Engineering or science on a full-time basis.

PhD Scholarship Benefits

  • Monthly stipend of AED 5,500 from Khalifa University and an additional stipend from CSC.
  • Flight tickets provided by CSC.
  • Full waiver of tuition fees and any research-associated fees.
  • Free University accommodation (or accommodation assistance of up to AED 3,000 per month if University accommodation is not available).
  • Free textbooks.
  • Visa processing costs.
  • UAE medical insurance.

Application

  • Apply  online  for the PhD program at Khalifa University.
  • After receiving the admission offer letter from Khalifa University, candidates must also apply to CSC by completing an application for funding and employer reference (forms are available online at  http://apply.csc.edu.cn ).

Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible an applicant must:

  • Be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China at the time of applying.
  • Be approved for unconditional admission to a PhD program at Khalifa University.
  • Have official approval for a scholarship award from CSC prior to first registration at Khalifa University.
  • The PhD scholarship is awarded to successful applicants for up to a maximum of 48 months.

Other terms and Conditions

To continue to receive the CSC-KU Scholarship the student must:

  • Register as a full-time student every semester, including the summer term.
  • Maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 out of 4 during his/her study at Khalifa University.
  • Comply with the policies, rules and regulations of Khalifa University.

Graduate Admission Application Deadlines

Spring 2022 admission for graduate programs will be open from 1 June 2021 until 16 October 2021.

INTERACT-Africa PhD and MSc Scholarships 2024/2025 for Africans.

INTERACT-Africa is an Intra-Africa Academic mobility project funded by the European Union (EU). The project focuses on Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology, with emphasis on conversion of organic waste to valuable bioproducts for transitioning into environmental sustainable and socially inclusive economies.

INTERACT-Africa  aims at :

  • Promoting inclusive learning mobility opportunities by enhancing capacity building of HEIs by focusing on training and education in green Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices
  • Fostering entrepreneurship and support the establishment of green technology businesses in Africa by providing mentorship, access to funding, and technical support to aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups working in the field of green Chemistry, Biology and Information technology
  • Facilitating networking and knowledge sharing among businesses to promote innovation and sustainable economic growth through provision of internships, cooperative education programs, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Scholarship Period

INTERACT-Africa is offering 28 postgraduate scholarships for the degree seeking mobility. 5 scholarships for the PhD and 23 for Masters programmes.

  • For PhD students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 36 months.
  • For MSc students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 24 months.

Eligibility criteria

  • The candidate must meet minimum requirement for admission into Masters and PhD programmes as stipulated by the host University Senate/regulating body.
  • Provide proof that the candidate is a national of and residence of an eligible country.
  • Student beneficiaries must be of African nationality and residing in Africa at the time of application.
  • All interested candidates must submit a research concept paper in the intended area of study (1 page, Times New Roman, single spacing).
  • Applicants will not be allowed to participate in the mobility without an admission letter from the host university.
  • Applicants to declare not to have already benefited from a previous student scholarship under the projects selected in the framework of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027.
  • Applicants to commit not to benefit from another EU funded scholarship scheme to implement the same activity during their Intra-Africa mobility period.
  • Provide motivation letter reflecting innovative technologies in climate change and mitigation.
  • Recommendation letters and/ reference letters (two). One from an academic advisor or professor/lecturer.
  • Applicant must be willing to study not in his/her country but within the eligible countries

  • Applicants from Non – – English level B2 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or its equivalent is mandatory to study in the institutions that use English as the language of instruction.
